This Labor Day weekend was a great kickoff to my reign as State Queen at Westfest. I’ve been excited for weeks about this parade, not only because I would get to experience it cruising in a Corvette, but because I would get to see my close friends from LIT camp.

Dear Members of Lodge 84, Dallas, If you have been following our lodge correspondence in the Vestnik in recent months, you’ll know that for some time, the members of Lodge 84, Dallas have been discussing matters related to the future of the lodge building and its adjacent parking lots. Generally stated, we have been looking at ways to make improvements and/or capitalize on the significant equity that exists in these properties.

As a result of these discussions and a subsequent real estate listing, the lodge has received a purchase offer for its property. Correspondingly, and in accordance with Supreme Lodge operational procedures, a meeting will be held to discuss, consider, and vote on the proposed sale. This will be the key agenda item at the September meeting of Lodge

84, Dallas to be held this Sunday, September 18 at 2 p.m. at the lodge hall located at 2625 Floyd Street in Dallas. All adult members are encouraged to attend to weigh in on the discussion.

In the event that members vote to sell, this will also be an opportune time to discuss ideas for the future home of Lodge 84, Dallas. If you are unable to attend the meeting, you are invited to share your thoughts with us through email at dyeags@swbell.net; however, please note, in order to vote on the proposed transaction, it will be necessary for you to be in attendance at the meeting on September 18.

The 2016 Lodge Incentive Guidelines will include membership program incentives and be based upon premium income generated by the lodges. The formula for calculating the Enhanced Premium Refund is:

1. $1.00 for each paid-up certificate; and 2. 2.80% of the lodge’s annual earned premium.

To receive the Enhanced Premium Refund, lodges must meet the following three-point criteria:

1. Hold regular lodge meetings in accordance with Article 50 of the SPJST By-Laws and offer a wellrounded fraternal program.

2. Return all requested paperwork on time by the due date.

3. Submit regular letters/photos to the Vestnik.

One of the many benefits SPJST offers to its members is the Scholarship Program. This year, 45 General Scholarships, three Technical Scholarships, and seven Leadership Grants were awarded. In addition, at the 2016 State Youth Achievement Day, six District Merit Scholarships, one State Merit Scholarship, and two Royalty Scholarships were awarded for a total of 64 scholarships and grants presented in 2016. Since the program’s inception, more than $1.5 million has been awarded.

General and Technical Scholarships are funded through SPJST’s annual allocation, through voluntary contributions received from our 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive, and memorial donations received throughout the year.

Donations are tax deductible.

Applications for scholarships are sent out from September through January upon request. The Fraternal Department must receive the completed application and all required information postmarked no later than February 1, 2017. Recipients are announced in April. The following scholarships are available through the program: • General and Technical Scholarships – For all SPJST members

• Leadership Grants – For active SPJST youth club members – An applicant may only apply for this grant in his/her senior year of high school. *Note: Active youth club members are

strongly encouraged to apply for both the General Scholarship (or Technical Scholarship if attending a technical school) and the Leadership Grant.

All interested SPJST members who wish to apply for a scholarship must meet the following criteria:

• Have an active SPJST life insurance certificate in force for at least one full year as of February 1; if the membership is in the form of an annuity, the amount must be at least $10,000 • Be a full-time student

• Hold an active SPJST life insurance certificate for the duration of the scholarship • Be a high school graduate or equivalent.

• Attend an accredited, as designated by the Southern Association Of Colleges And Schools Commission On Colleges, two- or four-year college, university, or technical college

Lodge 8, Weimar reports on August meeting

SPJST Lodge 8, Weimar members met for their monthly meeting on Monday, August 22, 2016, at Oakridge Smokehouse Restaurant in Schulenburg at 6 p.m. Business discussed included inquiring to the SPJST Home Office on Lodge 8 meeting bi-monthly for 2017. The District Six Fall Meeting was announced for Sunday, November 6 at St. Mary’s in Hallettsville with Lodge 4, Hallettsville and Lodge 63, Sweet Home co-hosting Congratulations and best wishes were shared for Leo and JoAnn Jares for their 57th wedding anniversary on July 11. Happy birthday and best wishes were also shared for Carolyn Tobola who was 76 on July 14, Al Marshall who turned 83 on July 7, and Henrietta Veselka who was 85 on July 19.

Next Meeting—September 26 The next meeting is Monday, September 26 at 6 p.m. at Oakridge Smokehouse Restaurant in Schulenburg with the meal compliments of the lodge.

Lodge 18, Elgin shares activities

August is here, and the students are going back to school. Before you know it, Christmas will be here. Before you know, it will be time to elect officers for the coming year. Are you interested in how your lodge is being run? Come to the next few meetings and learn what is going on in your lodge. It would be really nice to see some of the original founders of this great hall. Looking at the old photo albums you all have some great memories. We would like to hear from you.

We try to help the community as much as we can. Maybe you have a special cause you would like the lodge to support. With a little more help, we could do a lot more for the Elgin community.

Come join us. We meet every third Tuesday.

We have had some really great bands, and everyone who comes has a great time. I have had a few requests for dance lessons again. You know it

is just a matter of practice. We can teach you the steps, and the rest is up to you. We all have a great time, you know we are just kids at heart. It’s fun to just let your hair down and laugh at yourself.

Larry Sodek and the Central Texas Sounds played Sunday, August 14. We didn’t have that big a crowd, but those of us there had a great time. Larry, your band did a fantastic job; the music was great. You know our Texas bands are great! Let’s show our support and come to their dances. Many times, it is just fun to sit, listen, and enjoy the music and friends.

We have some great bands coming like The Lost Cause on Sunday, September 18. Why not make plans to bring the family and have an afternoon together. Families just don’t spend enough time together.

Celebrating an August birthday was Mike Mogonye, and celebrating an August anniversary was Paul and Jeanette Peterson - their 56th! . . . many more to all.

Lodge 25, Ennis members enjoy spaghetti meal

Dear Readers, Lodge 25, Ennis met Thursday, August 11, 2016. Betty prepared us a delicious meal consisting of spaghetti and all the trimmings. Thank you, Betty!

A moment of silence was held for deceased members Bill Marusak and Vlasta Sramek. Those on the sick list are Ivan Haskovec, Marie Vrla, Shirley Marusak, and Jim Holohan.

Minutes were accepted as corrected. All other reports were accepted as given. New members accepted by the membership were Kaylee Fowler, Emerson Gerich, and Willie Zaidle (transfer).

Rita reported that the youth attended State YAD and came home with eight first places, four second places, and three third place winners. Correspondence was read from the Bill Marusak and Edwin Svehlak families.

Celebrating birthdays in August were Adell, Annette, Ron, Kaylynn, Debbie, Rose Dlabaj, Lane, and Dorothy Jean Kudrna. Wedding anniversaries this month are Austin and Raychel, Joe Ben and Helen, Jeff and Julie, and Margaret and Johnnie I. who celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on August 11.

Lodge 29, Taylor readies for 16th annual cookoff Sept. 23, 24

SPJST Lodge 29, Taylor hosts its 16th Annual Barbecue Cookoff on Friday, September 23 and Saturday, September 24, 2016, at the hall, located at 5025 FM 619 in Taylor.

Barbecue cookers have six categories in which to enter for a chance at $4,000 in prize money as well as trophies!

Entry fees are $100 which includes chicken, pork ribs, and brisket; $10 fee for jackpot pinto beans; $10 fee for jackpot cook’s choice; and $10 fee for

jackpot port butt.

Cash and trophies will be awarded for first through 10th place in all meat categories - chicken, pork ribs, and brisket. Cash and unique trophies will be awarded for first, second, and third master cook and best rig.

Jackpot pinto beans, cook’s choice, and pork butt will receive 80 percent payback; cash prizes awarded for first through fifth place; trophies awarded for first through 10th place.

Friday Night Dance A free dance will be held on Friday evening, September 23 from 7:30 to 11:30 p.m. featuring Old Friends Band. Delicious old-fashioned hamburgers will be sold on Friday beginning at 6 p.m.

Lodge 79 Corpus Christi supports Polka Works exhibit

SPJST Lodge 79, Corpus Christi enjoyed a meal of beef and chicken fajitas and all the trimmings before the meeting on Sunday, August 21, 2016.

The meeting was called to order by President Mark Rebecek. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited. We had a moment of silence for deceased member Alfonzo Z. Robles, Jr. On the sick list were Jill Sijansky recovering at home after having surgery for a broken ankle and Larry Elzner who had gall bladder surgery. We wish them well.

Under unfinished business, President Rebecek and Treasurer Frank Sacky met with an insurance agent on insuring our meetings. A motion was made and approved that we accept the insurance company proposal.

Under new business, Lodge 79 will donate to Polka Works, a non-profit organization that will have an exhibit about Czech culture at the La Retama Library. Member Michael Urbanovsky brought a video for us to view about this organization.

Dorothy McCoy made a motion that our monthly donation go to the Halo Flight, which was approved.

Youth Leader Marcia Rew gave her report. She had six members and guests in attendance. At the next meeting, the youth will do crafts.

Twenty-five dollar prizes were won

Birthdays for August were President Rebecek on August 3 and youth member Marcus Rebecek on August 11. “Happy Birthday” was sung to these members.

Lodge 84, Dallas Lodge 84, Dallas seeks dancers to decide future of lodge hall at this for State Fair Sunday’s meeting Dear Readers Dear Members of Lodge 84, Dallas, If you have been following our lodge correspondence in the Vestnik in recent months, you’ll know that for some time, the members of Lodge 84, Dallas have been discussing matters related to the future of the lodge building and its adjacent parking lots. Generally stated, we have been looking at ways to make improvements and/or capitalize on the significant equity that exists in these properties.

As a result of these discussions and a subsequent real estate listing, the lodge has received a purchase offer for its property. Correspondingly, and in accordance with Supreme Lodge operational procedures, a meeting will be held to discuss, consider, and vote on the proposed sale. This will be the key agenda item at the September meeting of Lodge 84, Dallas to be held Sunday, September 18 at 2 p.m. at the lodge hall located at 2625 Floyd Street in Dallas. All adult members are encouraged to attend to weigh in on the discussion.

In the event that members vote to sell, this will also be an opportune time to discuss ideas for the future home of Lodge 84, Dallas. If you are unable to attend the meeting, you are invited to share your thoughts with us through email at dyeags@swbell.net; however, please note, in order to vote on the proposed transaction, it will be necessary for you to be in attendance at the meeting on September 18.

A beseda memorial performance for Bessie Petr will be at the State Fair of Texas on Sunday, October 16, 2016.

In honor of the late longtime Lodge 84, Dallas Youth Leader Bessie Petr, we are trying to get in touch with everyone who Bessie had taught the Beseda, to perform one more time at the Fair.

Lodge 80, Holland Hosts Summer Fun Fundraiser

SPJST Lodge 80, Holland held its annual major fundraiser—Summer Fun—at the lodge hall on Saturday, August 20, 2016. A great time was had by all. Activities at the event included a raffle for wonderful prizes, bucket prizes, chances for a barbecue grill, a live auction, a silent auction, and of course, a fabulous meal of brisket and sausage with all the excellent sides.

Background music and karaoke was provided by David Frei. The meal was catered by Eddie Ray’s Catering.

Cecelia Pavlicek Piwetz is a newly transferred member to Lodge 88, Houston from Lodge 21, Engle in Fayette, County. Cecelia has been a member of SPJST for more than 65 years, and her grandfather Charles Jalufka was her agent at that time. She is the daughter of Edith Jalufka Pavlicek of Lodge 88. Cecelia is now an active member at Lodge 88 and served on the Entertainment Committee. She also enjoys bingo on Thursday nights. Lodge 88 is very happy to have her as a member.

The regular meeting of SPJST Lodge 177, Academy was called to order on Wednesday, August 10, 2016, by President Otis Beck. All officers were present. Everyone stood and recited the Pledge of Allegiance.

President Beck welcomed two visitors to the meeting - newly-elected SPJST Vice President Hiram Dixon, and James Lee, III, representing the SPJST Foundation.

Minutes were accepted as presented. The Sunshine Committee reported that no one is on the sick list.

Committee reports for August, 2016 were presented.

New Business There was a discussion about the need for repairs and/or renovations to the lodge parking lot. It was previously decided that Bill and Don would get several bids on the costs involved.

Three bids are necessary before a decision would be determined about how the lodge is to proceed.

In a motion made by Shirley McCrea, seconded by Josie Mitchell, it was decided that on October 15, the youth FFA Booster Club would use the hall for a casino night through Academy ISD. Motion passed.

Josie also reported that she received a message from the Texas Director of Bingo stating lodges must have a bond or security in order to conduct bingo.

After discussion, it was decided that the time to pay the bond is when the license is renewed, and that Alfonzo

Lodge 180 Burleson appreciates police

The monthly meeting of Lodge 180, Burleson was held Tuesday, September 6, 2016, at the Burleson Police Department Facility in the Community Room. What a blessing to see so many people come to join us for our meeting!

Our meeting was opened with the Pledge of Alliance followed by a moment of silent prayer for those in need and around the world. We always offer prayers for our military as they are the ones that fight for our freedoms.

We were honored to have Officer David Wardlaw present to receive baskets of snack foods for the Burleson Police Department as a token of our appreciation for allowing us to use their Community Room.

Officer Wardlaw is a veteran in the Police Department with 14 years of service. He will be coming to a future meeting to give us information on how to protect our identity, our person, and other beneficial information.

All lodge officers were present, as well as District Three Director John Engelke and wife Diana. Other members present were Dena Bowden, Joe Babina and grandson Dylan (who later joined us for dinner). We had visitors present who are wanting to become part of our lodge family—Verna Mason, Liana Scott, Sandy Almonte, and son Logan Almonte. Lodge 180 is looking forward to having you become a part of our family.

Discussions took place regarding our lodge and its present situation with John Engelke providing needed information.

When we adjourned our meeting, we had a delightful dinner at Applebees’ Restaurant in Burleson. We all enjoyed the continued comradery, socializing, and dinner.

We look forward to seeing you at our next meeting, and remember that we are continuing to look to the future for growth.

Lodge 183 Arlington reports on August meeting

The monthly meeting was held and called to order at 4:55 p.m., Sunday, August 21, 2016, at Lodge 183 hall, 3100 Pleasant Valley Drive, Arlington, Texas. Roll call of officers was taken, and all were present: President Ann Pustejovsky, First Vice President/ Trustee Tom Weeks, Youth Leader Debra Daniel, Financial Secretary/Fraternal Activities Coordinator Kay Weeks, Secretary/Reporter Darlene Hollingsworth, and Trustees Pat Sill and Raymond Mikeska.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Mary Ann Higgins who is out of the hospital and is doing better; Gary Tompkins who is in a nursing home; and for our lodge members and their families who have passed away.

The Pledge of Allegiance was recited, and a prayer of silence was said for all those who are ill or who have recently been in the hospital.

Minutes were read from June’s meeting by Ann Pustejovsky. There were no corrections. Robert Sill made a motion to approve the minutes, and Pat Sill seconded. All approved the minutes from June as read.

President Ann Pustejovsky gave the bar report. Ann stated that for July, we had one rental. She also said we have three rentals scheduled in September.

Financial Secretary Kay Weeks gave the insurance report. She stated for July, we had five new certificates and no terminations. Robert Sill made a motion to approve the new members, and Debra Daniel seconded. All ap-

Debra Daniel gave the youth club report. She stated the youth club attended State YAD. Winners will be announced at next month’s meeting. Our scrapbook won first place at state.

Debra stated at the Arlington Fourth of July parade regarding our float, the youth won first place in the youth category and won the Ruth Jackson Award for the most patriotic float. Westfest is September 3 in West. State Fair is October 16, and the District Three Fall Meeting is October 23 in Ennis. More details to follow.

Trustee Report The trustees will be applying for our beer license.

Old Business President Ann stated the Fourth of July parade in Arlington was a good turnout. Afterwards, everyone attended dinner at the KC hall.

Pat Sill attended the Corpus Christi Getaway, and she stated it was a good turnout! District Three won first place for the sand sculpture contest. Congratulations! Ann stated she, Raymond, and Pat attended the SPJST Convention, and it was very interesting.

New Business Ann stated October 16 is Heritage Day at the State Fair. The District Three Fall Meeting is October 23 in Ennis. Everyone will be able to bring canned goods for the meal.

Tom Weeks will be traveling to New Orleans to help out with the flooding, and he is asking for a donation to help the city. Robert Sill made a motion to approve the donation. Janie Rejcek sec-

Ladies’ Circle of Lodge 92 Fort Worth

The Ladies Circle of Lodge 92 met on Tuesday, August 9, 2016, with 35 members attending. It was just too hot to think about getting out for some.

Some left town for greener, cooler locations, and some members went other directions this day. Just know that you were missed, and we hope to see everyone next month.

President Cathy Simmank led the attendees in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and welcomed everyone.

Business continued with the acceptance of the minutes and an update on finances. We raised pretty close to $100 on the silent auction held last month. This is very good for a little of this and a little of that.

Marlene Bass announced that Estelle Hurtik fell, broke her hip, and is now staying with her daughter. Willie Mae Becan is now in hospice care.

Others mentioned that are in need of our thoughts and prayers were Pauline Brownlee and Lydia Alholm. Evelyn Scaff came without her escort this month. She continues to improve daily - thank goodness. Our prayers go out to everyone who needs comfort and strength to get through “tough” times.

We think of you daily.

Many members brought school supplies this month, and we will continue to collect them again in September. The children and teachers are counting on us, and we thank you for all that you do. We are also collecting pennies, labels, and soda tops for education.

Other announcements included:

1. The Ladies Circle will host the cake walk for Heritage Day on September 17. We need cakes so we’re asking our members to please plan to donate a home-baked cake or cash if you don’t have the time to bake. We’ll go buy one for you.

2. September’s theme will be sports. Many of you are Ranger fans and are expecting a big push for the playoffs in October, or you may support the college of your choice or even maybe the Cowboys.

3. President Cathy has received quite a few recipes, and there is still time for members to submit their favorites. They need to be in by the October meeting if at all possible.

Our hostesses for this day were Binnie Thieme, Mary Ann Krivanek, Jeanette Tesar, Norma McLendon, and Joy Booe. Our appreciation and thanks to each of you for setting up lunch and providing the main entree. Yum - it was all good!

Now for birthdays. Evelyn Scaff is 89 and still “tootin’ around” like a youngster even though her boo-boo is not completely healed. Mary Ann Adcock is another one who you can’t keep down, and Joan Shropshire had

very little to say . . . Janice Record did not attend, and Betty Krenek was on a trip to those greener pastures I mentioned earlier. Happy birthday to all.

Jon Durham gave details on the improvements to the lodge building. The floor was recently refinished, and it looks wonderful. Call Jon if you would like the scoop on what’s happening north of Fort Worth.

Somewhere during the meeting, we did have our spelling test. It was fun, I thought, and very revealing. No one wanted to share just how many words they got correct. Sandi Celusniak, Christine Apperson, and Aleesha Barrett got all 10 words right and from

that point on, no one would step forward with any more information. We gave away scratch-offs as prizes, and I don’t think anyone won anything there either. Bummer.

After door prizes were given out, Janet Basham shared some funnies with us. Laughter is really good medicine, and we enjoy such foolishness.

Although we were few, we still had a really good time. And last of all, the blessing for lunch was given, and bingo followed.

Sefcik family

The 25th annual Sefcik reunion will be held on Saturday, October 1, 2016, at Seaton Community Center on Highway 53 in Seaton, Texas.

Registration and greetings will begin at 11 a.m., and the meal will be served at approximately 12:30 p.m.

Fried chicken, sausage, tea, and coffee will be provided by the host family.

Additional side dishes and desserts are requested and would be appreciated.

The Sefcik family history goes back to the small village of Leskovec in Moravia. This is in the eastern part of present day Czech Republic, near the border with Slovakia. Johann Sefcik and his wife lived in the middle of the village of Leskovec in house #48.

They also had a farm on the side of one of the rolling hills just outside of the village. They had five children John, Joseph, Paul, Rozina, and Maria. All the family remained in Moravia except Joseph, who immigrated to Texas in 1872 along with his wife Rozina Mucha Sefcik.

Joseph and Rozina had five children - Anna Marie (1874 to 1962), John H. (1876 to 1961), Joseph F. (1877 to 1955), Paul (1879 to 1947), and Karel (1882 to 1917).

In Memory of Linda Faltesek

Linda Louise (Fojtik) Faltesek of Taylor went to her heavenly home on Saturday, June 18, 2016, at the age of 64.

Linda was born in Taylor on December 30, 1951. On August 25, 1973, Linda was united in marriage with Jerry Wayne Faltesek. One of her brightest moments in life was the birth of her and Jerry’s children - Lorrie and Brian.

She was also a member of Taylor Brethren Church.

Linda was preceded in death by her father and mother Albert and Doris Fojtik; and brother Michael Fojtik.

Survivors include husband Jerry; son Brian; daughter Lorrie and husband Shane; grandsons Cole and Justin; sister Delores Anderson; plus many nieces, nephews, brothers-inlaw and sisters-in-law, who were all close to her heart.

Linda was a homemaker most of her married life with Jerry, which she took very seriously. Her top priority was making sure her family was taken care of. She enjoyed cooking and always had a love of flowers. She always stopped to smell the roses.

Linda’s two grandsons were the light of her life. There wasn’t a moment she wasn’t talking about them. The many family vacations and get-togethers were very special memories she often reflected on.

Visitation was held Thursday, June 23 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Taylor Providence Funeral Home in Taylor. Funeral service was at 10 a.m. Friday, June 24 at Taylor Brethren Church, Taylor with Reverend James Hejl officiating. Burial followed at Taylor City Cemetery.

In Memory of Bernard “Ben” Kriska

Bernard “Ben” Hugo Kriska, age 89, passed away in Dallas, Texas, on Monday, September 5, 2016.

Ben was born in Ennis on January 4, 1927, to Joe Stanley and Mary (Kubin) Kriska.

He grew up in Ennis and attended St. John High School. He was married to Genora Rejcek on March 31, 1990.

Ben Kriska He served his country proudly in the United States Army serving during World War II as a PFC Military Police in the Asiatic Campaign from 1945 to 1946.

He owned and operated a precision metal shop.

He was a member of SPJST Lodge 84, Dallas. He was also a member of St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church, KJT, Knights of Columbus, WFLA No. 401, American Legion, VFW, and the Pecan Growers Association. He loved working with, growing, and promoting the pecan industry for which he received numerous awards and certificates for his hard work growing pecans. He loved polka dancing, festivals, and music. One of the great highlights of his life was when he was able to be a part of the Honor Flight that traveled to Washington, D.C. He is survived by wife Genora Kriska; brothers Wesley Joe Kriska and Franklin Kriska; sisters Mary Kay Hollis and Dorothy Bjork; numerous nieces and nephews Nodya and Bill Thornton, Aaron and Duane Zepeda, and Matthew and Natasha Thornton; and great-grandchildren Violet and Everett Zepeda, whom he adored.

He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife Ann Marie Kriska on August 3, 1988; and siblings Frances Moore, Helen Piraino, Joe Kriska, and Larry Kriska.

In Memory of Emil Rohan

Emil Edmund Rohan passed into eternal life on May 31, 2016, at the age of 99.

Emil was born the fourth child to Fred and Filament Rohan December 23, 1916 in Weimar, Texas. He married the love of his life Grace McBride in 1941 in Schulenburg. They made their home in Weimar before moving to San Antonio in 1942. Grace and Emil were married 72 years before her death in 2013 at the age of 91. They both enjoyed dancing to old time tunes and were active members of SPJST Lodge 133, San Antonio, KJT, and Bexar County Czech Heritage Society.

Emil served in the military and later as a civil servant until his retirement from Kelly Field AFB in 1978. After retiring, he and his wife enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and RV camping with the Blue Bonnet Good Sam’s Club. Emil moved to Highland Lake Retirement Community in Cedar Park in 2014.

Emil is survived by sister Bessie Heep; sister-in-law Irene Sustr; sons Leroy Rohan and Leslie Rohan (Freth); grandchildren Christopher Rohan, Andrew Rohan, and Jennifer Castiaux; and great-grandchildren Jordan Paige Summers, Austin Elizabeth Rohan, and Kalani Grace Rohan.

The officers and members of SPJST Lodge 133, San Antonio extend their heartfelt sympathy to the family of Emil Rohan. We treasure the time we shared in fraternal activities.

In Memory of Charlie Kutil

Charlie Jerry Kutil, of San Antonio, Texas, passed away Wednesday, August 17, 2016, in San Antonio. He was born in Dallas on September 12, 1930.

Visitation was on Friday, August 19 at Mission Park Funeral Chapels South. Funeral service was held Saturday, August 20 at Mission Burial

Park South.

Charlie loved fishing at the coast and traveling. He was a master brick mason and a construction foreman and project manager for many historical buildings including the initial development of Northstar Mall, the Nix Hospital, Hemisphere Plaza, and many schools and churches in San Antonio. Charlie was a member of the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers.

In Memory of August Hosek, Jr.

August Hosek, Jr. went to be with the Lord on Thursday, December 31, 2015, in La Vernia, Texas at the age of 93.

He was born to Agnes Hosek and August Hosek, Sr. in Poth.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife Lila Hosek; son Michael Hosek; grandson Jason Hosek; and numerous family siblings.

He is survived by son Allen Hosek; sisters Ella Plyler and Leona Moczygemba, brother Victor Hosek; grandchildren Malissa Runty, Kimberly Barnes, Mandy Pruitt and Zachary Rodriguez; great-grandchildren Molly Runty and Bailey Runty; and daughter-in-law Cindy Hosek.

During his days here with us, he touched many lives and was loved deeply by family and friends and gave us a lifetime of love and memories.

August will be greatly missed, but never forgotten.

She was employed by Groce Wearden and served as secretary to the Diocese of Victoria for 16 years. Mary was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church for over 60 years.

She was a member of the Catholic Daughters and had served as Eucharistic minister for over 10 years.

Mary was devoted to her family and dearly loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed traveling, dancing, shopping, listening to music, Sudoku, watching game shows, and sports on television as she sipped her favorite soda - Dr. Pepper.

Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Leader reports on Sept. meeting

Dear Věstník Readers, SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Club held its meeting on Sunday, September 4, 2016, at 1 p.m.

The meeting was called to order by President Hunter Bartek. Koby Stone lead everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance and youth club motto.

There were 28 members present and three visitors - Ayla Wolf, Blake Marshall, and Ella Washam. Come back to visit us any time!

Birthdays for September are Emma Regan, Katelyn Erskine, Tamryn Stock, Camdon Bartek, and visitor Ayla Wolf. I hope everyone has a great birthday.

Old Business Friday, August 12 to Sunday, August 14 was the Corpus Christi Get-

away. We got second place on our sand sculpture per the judges, and second place for likes, comments, and shares per Facebook. Thanks to all who came and participated. It was a fun time. We had winners in Bunco, kolache-eating contest, hula hoop, and raffle.

Sunday, August 28 - The District Two Fall Meeting was held at Lodge 80, Holland. There were a lot of games, silent auction items, cake walk, guessing games, spinning wheel, and the Christmas Ornament Contest. See pictures in the Věstník.

On Saturday, September 3 - District Two Beseda Dancers performed at Westfest. I heard they did a great job.

Sunday, September 11 - This is national Grandparents Day. I hope you grandparents all have a great day.

New Business Saturday, September 17 - Our lodge annual fundraiser - Outdoor Extravaganza - will be held starting at 5 p.m.

Dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m.

Tickets are $40 in advance; $50 at the

door the night of the event. Children are $5 each. The drawing for the top prize will be at 10 p.m. Dinner will consist of steak, and there will be snacks and beverages provided. There will be many card games, live and silent auction items as well as bucket items. Volunteer to work, and we ask that all youth club members make a dessert for this event. One of your previous YAD recipes will work. These items will be used for the sweets table, live and/or silent auction. Thanks in advance. See the advertisement in this week’s Vestnik on page 29 for a list of prizes to be given away that night.

warming to see them gitty when I waved at them, and hearing “thank you, princess!” when I threw candy in their direction. It reminded me of how much I looked up to the royalty when I was little. I would never have imagined myself here today, being that

same inspiration to them.

We got the chance to hand out SPJST fans to hot audiences and talk to people about our program and what we stand for. I met some very interesting people and got to chat it up with Colby and J. Beaux. Unfortunately, my duchess Rileigh Kitchen couldn’t make it, but we missed you, and can’t wait for next weekend’s event!

Lodge 88, Houston youth enjoys new school

My first week of school was very good. I have made many new friends including Teddy, Dalton, Autumn, and Trey. I’m very exited that I got student

off, danced, and rode carnival rides.

With about four hours of distance between us, it was such a blessing to see some of my closest friends, including Clark and Reid Jones, the entire Jones family, Pierce Tignor, Madalyn Stoeppleman, Rachael Humphreys, Makenzie Nelson, Angel Pace, and many others. It’s crazy how those who live so far away give the most love, and I’m so lucky to have them in my life.

I can’t wait to see them again at future

of the week, and I didn’t even know it.

So far I am enjoying my new school and my new school district. I can’t wait to meet more new friends.

In this lesson, we will discuss some rules and guides to speaking correct Czech, and using stress and intonation.

1. In Czech, the accent is invariably on the first syllable: PRÁ-ce, SKÁ-kat, ŠKO-la.

2. In the case of three or more syllables, there is a secondary accent on the third syllable: PRÁ-co-VÁti, VZDĚ-la-VÁ-ti, zA-palo-VÁ-ti.

3. One syllable prepositions form one single unit with the word following, and are always accented: Do Prahy (doprahy), po válce (poválce).

4. If the preposition consists of only one consonant — v, z, s, k, — it must be joined in a single sound with the word following k vám kvám — not ke vám: V Novém Yorku (not ve Novém Yorku).

5. Before other groups of consonants these prepositions are said in full and accented: VE středu, KE mně, SE mnou, ZE školy.

6. Prepositions are pronounced in full if the word following begins with the same sound: VE Vídni, KE kostelu, SE sestrou, ZE země.

double consonants are pronounced as single consonants in Czech: (Anna, cenný). A double vv or double kk are no pronounceable. However, in a word like nejjemnější, the two j’s are separated because nej is a superlative prefix.

More on superlatives later.

7. Although the accent is always on the first syllable, it does not lengthen a short vowel following it, and we must not yield to the temptation to stress long vowels outside the first syllable. The length or shortness of a vowel has no bearing on the stress.

8. Stress is not as strongly marked in Czech as in English, German, or Russian. The intonation (melody of the speech—its “musicalness”), that is, the rise and fall in the pitch of the voice, is not made up from as many tunes and patterns as in the above three languages. The voice does not rise to as high a pitch, nor does it fall low as readily as in the above languages. In these respects, the Czech language, may be said to be rather “flat” and monotone in character.

9. The outstanding feature of Czech speech is the contrast between long and short vowels, alternating in succession, giving it rather staccato character.

10. Finally, this rule should probably be observed: if you’re not sure which syllable is to be accented, don’t accent any; this will be better than stressing the wrong one.

Don’t worry too much about stresses and intonation at this point, but make it a part of each lesson as we move along.

Brazos Valley Czech Heritage Society is proud to continue offering Czech language classes. Classes are for all levels including beginning Czech language students.

Victoria Czech Heritage Festival Sunday, Sept. 25

The 31st Annual Victoria Czech Heritage Festival is big celebration on Sunday, September 25, 2016, at the Victoria Community Center, 2905 East North Street. The festival sponsored by the Victoria County Czech Heritage Society (VCCHS) has drawn a thousand or more people consistently for more than three decades now.

Events begin with four musical performances held throughout the day. Internationally known accordionist, arranger, composer, and teacher from Galveston, Shelia Lee, will perform first engaging the crowd in traditional Czech entertainment promptly at 10 am. The Shiner Hobo Band takes over at 11 a.m. and entertains all until 1 p.m. followed by Fritz Hodde and the Fabulous Six Polka band from Hutto.

Then the Red Ravens Band will join Fritz Hodde at 4 p.m. for a one-half hour jam session. The Red Ravens follow solo continuing with good dancing music for all until 7:30 p.m.

Czechs are long in tradition and as a result have again added several cultural demonstrations/lessons to this year’s festival. Attendees will learn the art of dancing, playing the accordion, and playing the Tarok card game. In fact, for the first time ever, admission is free to the entire festival to anyone less than 35 years old who pre-registers for one of the lessons by September 23.

the world via the internet and has literally hundreds of students at any one time will teach piano and diatonic or button accordion lessons free at the festival . . . plus you get into the festival free if you are less than 35 years young. Shelia says, “Bring your accordion or we’ll have a few extra and we’ll learn to play Julida, A Ja Sam, Doudlebska Polka and more. This class is for all levels – beginner to timid! Even intermediate players will learn a few tricks! Reserve now – seats are limited. Ages 8 to 100! Accordion lessons are from 11:15 a.m. till 3 p.m.

Oh, and the free dance lessons?

Dance enthusiast and partners Elaine Rosquist from Colorado and Louis Stewart from Moulton will be teaching one-hour classes of polka, waltz, and two-step dancing from 10:15 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the annex. Specially held again for the younger generation to perfect this art and get their step in the right direction, if you pre-register for this, you get into the festival free if you are less than 35 years young.

Come on teens to 35, let’s learn to dance a polka! Free! Then you can dance to the festival bands till 7:30 p.m. practicing what you learned. Get your partner (if you want) and sign up!

Joe Pustka of Victoria is one of the founding members of this Czech festival, and he will be teaching how to play the Czech card game known as Tarok or Taroky at the festival. In fact, this festival was founded with the intent to teach the fun game of Taroky and promote the heritage. It too is free, and you get into the festival free if you are less than 35 years young. Two playing classes will be held: 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

And, for the first time, the festival is serving wine—specially imported Czech wine. Czechs traditionally have made and served wine and in fact, even though the Czech Republic is only one-third the size of Texas, there are more than 80,000 wineries there.

The import ban was recently lifted, and the festival will have available both red and white wines by the glass from the Czech Republic. Of course, there is plenty of pivo (beer) at the festival, too! Come by for a refreshing glass of wine or a cold pivo.

The Czech Heritage Museum will again be available at the festival.

Victor Peter Memorial Scholarship offered

The Victor Peter Memorial Scholarship is a $500 scholarship granted by The Czech Heritage Society of Texas to a graduating Texas high school senior. The money is given to the recipient upon proof of registration in a program of studies in a college or university.

The applicant must submit the following: 1. A copy of his or her high school transcript.

2. Two letters of recommendation.

One should be from a high school teacher attesting to the student's academic promise. The other should be from an adult attesting to the student's interest in Czech culture.

WWII films but this one’s center is the assassination of Heydrich and what happened afterwards. These events were important in re-aligning and organizing the Allies position in regards to Czechoslovakia. This was the second part of the war.

“Anthropoid” can be seen as a selfless act of heroism but it also gives us a lurid picture of how ruthless the Nazis could be. The raw brutality in one specific scene is almost unbearable to watch. Truthfully, there is not one sympathetic German in the whole lot starting with the opening scene and the final one.

The film’s second half is the part that contains the bulk of the action. I am not talking about Chuck Norris

action but realistic and fact based kind. There are some teeth clinching and edge of the seat moments. It is not a win situation but an event where taking out as many of the enemy as you can. It is Gallipoli and the Alamo for the Czechs. The film is basically factual to the record of the events.

If “Anthropoid” has a flaw, it is in the slowness of the first half. But, in all fairness, there is a ton of facts and exposition that the screenwriters had to slog through to get to the heart of the story. The characters and their plan has to be set up properly along with the situation of the tale. In about a half hour after the film’s beginning, matters begin to become quite com-

Not Happy!

“Anthropoid.” (2016). Rated: R. Violence and Some Disturbing Images. Running Time: 120mn. Starring: James Dornan, Cillian Murphy, Brian Caspe, Charlotte La Bon, Anna Geislerova and Toby Jones. Written and Directed by Sean Ellis (“Cashback”).

Don’t be fooled by the title of “Anthropoid.” At first you may think it a sci-fi or horror film but believe me it is a subject matter that is very serious. There is a monster in “Anthropoid” and his name is Reinhard Heydrich (Detlef Bothe), the man who was crowned “Butcher of Prague.” Heydrich was Hitler’s third in command and his legacy is being the architect of Hitler’s “Final Solution.”

One thing kept Heydrich from being as popular as Goring, Himmler and others. That was because of

pelling. Then it begins its journey into anti-climax.

Original locations were used where possible. There were some sets that had to be built because of the absence of buildings that were no longer there. Prague is seen as a beaten down city because of the hold the Nazis had on it at the time.

Prague is really a beautiful city to behold. The two lead actors, Cillian Murphy and Jamie Dornan are not really familiar faces but they have the chemistry and the acting experience to give good performances.

Murphy is best known for his work in Kenneth Loach’s “The Wind That Shakes the Barley” and Dornan as Christian Grey in “Fifty Shades of Grey.” Together they disappear into their characters.

Sometimes “Anthropoid” seems like a victory and at others like a crushing defeat. The patriots know full well that bad things will happen.

They know that if they succeed thousands will suffer and die as a result.

Eventually, they do what they believe is right. History has written them as courageous but just imagine how they would have been recorded had Germany won the war.

“Anthropoid” is not a happy film but it is engrossing. Just when are war pictures really happy? Mostly they are informative and entertaining. Trust me, “Anthropoid” is a film that should be seen to really appreciate.
