SPJST Youth Clubs . . . Join and Get Involved Today!

SPJST is a fraternal organiza-

tion founded on the time-honored idea of doing good for each other and for the communities that we seek to serve. Our youth mission is to provide a well-rounded educational, patriotic, and social program. We also like to have fun!

Through active participation in local SPJST Youth Clubs and statewide events, SPJST youth develop a greater awareness of the State Youth common bonds Director that we all Lynette Talasek share. SPJST youth clubs also work with communitybased organizations to tailor programs to fit local needs. Youth activities include summer camps and community service projects, talent contests, and other local and statewide contests. SPJST also has a great scholarship program that has helped to enable hundreds of SPJST youth to continue their higher education.

SPJST strives to instill a healthy lifestyle for children and families with programs like SPJST summer camp.

Summer camp provides our members with the chance to have fun in the great outdoors and foster friendships that will last a lifetime. Helping children develop a love of the outdoors and being physically active is a big part of SPJST’s camp program.

Young people are influenced by their friends, family, media, and other information that they receive. Our District Youth Counselors and volunteer youth leaders work hard to build and maintain a fun and stimulating youth program that instills positive values in SPJST youth. By becoming involved in the youth program as an adult volunteer, you can make a positive differ-

ence in your community and in the lives of our young people.

Seeing is believing. We hope that you enjoy the 2016 SPJST Summer Spectacular. You and your family can be a part of these programs by becoming an active member of SPJST. Membership is available through the purchase of a life insurance certificate from SPJST. If you are not currently a member of SPJST and would like information about SPJST life insurance and the many benefits that SPJST has to offer, please see pages four and five and contact the District Youth Counselor or youth leader in your area. Membership in SPJST provides many opportunities for active youth club members. Even in communities that do not have an active youth club, there are ways that you can participate in our fun, service-oriented program. Those qualifications are outlined in the following summary.

What’s an Active Youth Member?

In SPJST, an active youth club member is a youth with an SPJST insurance certificate that is current and

who attends seven out of 12 monthly youth club meetings during the youth year. Youth may attend the adult lodge meetings or another lodge’s youth club meeting if either their youth club is not meeting or they need to make up meetings. Active youth members must be single and not pregnant or a parent. The age of the youth on June 1 of the current youth year will be the recognized age in the SPJST Youth Program (camp, YAD, contests, etc.).

A youth with a current certificate may enter the SPJST youth program the youth year that they will be entering kindergarten. The youth will be eligible for camp and youth achievement day after the completion of their kindergarten year. The youth year begins June 1 and goes through May 31. Youth club eligibility ends when the youth graduates from high school.

Each district sponsors a Youth Achievement Day in which local lodge youth club members compete for district honors. First place district winners go on to compete at State Youth Achievement Day to be held Saturday, August 5, 2017, at the Frank W. Mayborn Convention Center in Temple.

Who Can Enter?

Active youth club members, who have completed their kindergarten year to high school senior, who attended seven out of 12 youth club meetings during the youth year and who perform constructive activities in the lodge, are eligible for the YAD contests.

New youth club members joining after June 1 must have attended a majority of meetings since the join date.

Certificates must be issued by January 1 in order to participate in YAD for that year. Youth in lodges where there are no youth clubs can enter YAD if they attend seven out of 12 adult meetings.

How Do You Enter?

A YAD contestant must pre-register for all contests by completing a separate YAD entry card for each contest to be entered. YAD entry cards are available from the youth leader, DYC, or State Youth Director.

SPJST Summer Camp and Participation Guidelines SPJST provides summer camping for its youth members. Youth camp funds come from an annual allocation by the SPJST Supreme Lodge. Each of the seven SPJST districts across the state hosts its own camp. Some districts may have combined camp sessions.

Who Can Participate?

Camp is provided on the basis of participation in SPJST activities. Pending that the qualifications are met, summer camp is available to all SPJST certificate-holding youth members.

Campers must also be in good standing with SPJST. The ages for camp are completed kindergarten to high school senior as of June 1 of the camping year. Graduating high school seniors who are active youth club members may attend camp as a Senior Leader-InTraining (LIT) during the camp session that follows their high school graduation.

Camp Eligibility Qualifications for youth to attend SPJST camp are based on the previous youth year (June 1 to May 31). To be eligible to attend camp at no charge, youth members must attend seven out of 12 youth meetings or seven out of 12 adult lodge meetings, if the lodge does not have a youth club. Youth members must also attend a majority of the youth activities in the youth club or lodge.

Any youth (previous member or new certificate) who initially joins the youth club by January 1 and attends seven meetings may go to camp free of charge. SPJST youth members who do not meet the above qualifications may attend camp for a prorated fee determined by the DYC. These funds will be submitted to the State Youth Director. Life insurance certificate must be written by May 1 of the current youth year in order for youth to attend camp. This rule also applies to those campers who will be paying to attend camp.

Each camper must submit a completed SPJST Camp Application to the State Youth Department no later than May 31. These applications are available on the SPJST Website. All incomplete camp applications will be returned to the youth. No one may attend SPJST Camp without a completed SPJST Eligibility Application on file for the current year.

2016 SPJST Scholarship Program and Qualifications SPJST recognizes and awards its members for academic excellence, exceptional leadership ability, and outstanding service with its scholarship and leadership grant program. This past spring, the SPJST Home Office awarded 55 - $1,000 scholarships to deserving SPJST youth. Another nine scholarships were presented at State Youth Achievement Day in August.

SPJST awards the following scholarships and leadership grants: General Scholarships in the amount of $1,000

Leadership Grants in the amount of $1,000 State Merit Grant in the amount of $1,500

District Merit Grants in the amount of $1,000

grants are funded solely through allocations by the Supreme Lodge.

To be eligible, applicants must:

• Have an active SPJST life insurance certificate in force for at least one year as of February 1; • Be a full-time student;

• Hold an active SPJST life insurance certificate for the duration of the scholarship or grant; • Be a high school graduate or equivalent;

• Attend an accredited two- or fouryear college, university, or technical college.

Any youth member who has been the recipient of either the State Merit Grant, the District Merit Grant, or the Royalty Grant is also eligible to apply for a General Scholarship or a Leadership Grant. A youth may receive a maximum of two scholarships/grants within SPJST, excluding the State Merit Grant.

General scholarships are funded by the Supreme Lodge and voluntary contributions by SPJST members. Accordingly, the more funds available, the more scholarships awarded. Leadership grants were established in 1996 for active youth club members. Leadership

General scholarship recipients may only receive one general scholarship.

Active youth club members are required to apply for both the general scholarship and the leadership grant; however, they are only eligible to receive one. You may request scholarship application guidelines through the Office of the President during the fall of the year. All required application materials must be returned to the SPJST Fraternal Department by February 1. Please note that this information is subject to change. All applicants are encouraged to please refer to the Office of the President for the most complete and up-to-date information regarding the SPJST Scholarship application process.

Snook, Jourdanton Youth Win State Crowns

SPJST Youth Showcase Talents at State Youth Achievement Day

Approximately 200 SPJST youth from across Texas met at the Frank W.

Mayborn Convention Center in Temple, Texas, on Saturday, August 6, 2016, to showcase their knowledge and skills at SPJST State Youth Achievement Day (YAD).

The 2016 competition involved participants in grades kindergarten to high school senior. They competed in 15 events, testing their skills in areas such as construction, foods (bars), handicraft, photography (trees), sewing, public speaking, and talent. The event also featured a special category which is a surprise until the day of the competition. This year, participants were instructed to design greeting cards with an assortment of crayons and markers and a sheet of white paper. The cards will be delivered to residents at S.P.J.S.T. Senior Living Centers in Taylor, Needville, and Hillje.

District and State YADs allow SPJST youth club members to demonstrate their knowledge and skills and gain recognition for their achievements. As the youth compete, they develop self-confidence and sharpen their decision-making abilities. They also have a chance to socialize with other youth club members.

SPJST State YAD is the culmination of a year of hard work by some of the best and brightest SPJST youth club members.

Winners of SPJST District YAD competitions across Texas qualified to compete at the state contest. Seven District YADs were held in June and July in Caldwell, Seaton, Arlington, Lowake, Houston, Taiton, and New

Braunfels.

2016 - 2017 SPJST State Royalty The grand finale of the 2016 State Youth Achievement Day was the presentation of the 2016-2017 State Royalty Court. Crowned to represent SPJST in the coming year were King Colby See and Duke J. Beaux Hruska, both of Lodge 9, Snook in District One, and Queen Amanda Hoggard of Lodge 202, Jourdanton and Duchess Rileigh Kitchen of Lodge 185, New Braunfels in District Seven.

State King Colby, 14, is the son of Randy and Jonna See of Snook. Colby is a freshman at Snook High School. State Duke J. Lodge 202, Jourdanton teen receives $1,500 State Merit Grant Amanda Hoggard age 17, a member

of Lodge 202, Jourdanton, is the recipient of the 2016 SPJST State Merit Grant. He is the son of Sandra Hoggard of San Antonio. Amanda is a senior at Winston Churchill High School. She received the $1,500 grant during the SPJST State Youth Achievement Day awards ceremony in Temple. After high school, Amanda plans to study illustration and art history to become a Disney imagineer.

Teens from each district with the most youth merit points over the last three years competed for the grant. As part of the competition, each teen submitted a 1,000-word essay on the topic “Seeking the Treasures of SPJST.” The winner was selected by a panel of judges using the following criteria: content (50 percent); mechanics— grammar, spelling, and sentence structure (35 percent); and neatness (15 percent).

State Merit Grant Essay: My SPJST Treasure Chest

“There’s treasure hidden in every moment.

The joy in life is finding it,” according to motivational speaker, Katrina Mayer. As I embarked on this quest of “Seeking the Treasures of SPJST”, this quote reminded me that SPJST is a treasure chest full of riches - not those that can be cashed in, but those that can last a lifetime. Each treasure SPJST offers its youth is like a beautifully radiant rare gem. I have found many gems that have shaped my life and will be carried within me for years to come.

The first gem in my SPJST treasure chest is pearls. Pearls are considered to represent creativity. At events like Youth Achievement Day (YAD), there is inspiration blossoming all around us. SPJST’s unique competitions and categories let us express ourselves, and put a spark in our youth. Winning first place at state for the first time planted a seed, encouraging me to come up with new projects for the next year, and to continue growing my talents. It boosted my confidence immensely and helped me feel a sense of accomplishment. The support of SPJST shines on the arts and talents of the youth during YAD, encouraging creativity to flourish, and inspiring the youth to “think outside the box” to craft something imaginative and original, and showcase it.

Like a plant – growing and maturing into a beautiful flower – my love of the arts has grown and this competition has encouraged me to follow my dreams to be an artist.

Opal stands for confidence, which is given to youth through Leaders-In-Training (LIT) camp, and the royalty competition. We learn valuable

leadership and public speaking skills, which greatly improve confidence and facilitates success in the future. We learn through our roles in camp not only how to be a leader, but how to interact with youth. My first time being an LIT, I discovered the joy of bonding with campers and making their experiences amazing. SPJST gives us selfassurance by empowering us to lead camp activities and practice our leadership skills. I learned to make connections with youth of all ages and these skills have given me poise dealing with various interactions at my place of employment and in other volunteer programs that I participate in.

SPJST royalty competitions also instill confidence by promoting youth as ambassadors for the program. While I have enjoyed receiving the title and sash, the real opportunity has been to share with the public what SPJST has done for me. I am just one of many in my generation to have become a self-reliant leader because of this program.

Amethyst is believed to strengthen relationships, which is seen consistently in our annual summer camp. Through our bonfire tradition, we invite newcomers to ceremoniously spread ashes from the previous year’s fire into the flames, symbolically tying them to all the campers that came before them. Camp is a way to extend our horizons, making new friends and reviving past friendships. Amazingly, in four short days we become family. Each time we see each other, whether at state competitions, festivals, or the End-of-Summer Getaway, it is like a reunion. I used to consider myself shy, but after years of dancing, playing, and splashing, I am able to com-

Seeking the Treasures of SPJST

Royalty Speech By 2016-2017 State King Colby See

Dobre odpoledne. Good afternoon judges, family, and friends.

Thank you for joining my fellow contestants and I on this special day.

This year’s theme is “Seeking the Treasures of SPJST,” and I believe the treasures of SPJST are the high ideals found in our youth club motto: Brotherhood, Benevolence, Joining Hands, and Supporting Humanity.

Merriam Webster Dictionary describes brotherhood as “feelings of friendship, support, and understanding between people.” I have been a member of SPJST all of my life, and I have never experienced a more close knit group of people who care so much for each other and show endless love and support. I have many different types of family: my immediate family, my blood family, my church family, my school family, and especially, my SPJST family.

Benevolence is the disposition to do good. I remember looking up to all the older kids, adults, and leaders in my club and watching them demonstrate benevolence by doing good in our club and community and thinking, I want to be just like them and change the world one act of goodness at a time. SPJST has showed me two options: be benevolent and good or be malevolent and do evil. I chose to be benevolent —

pletely let go around my SPJST family. I’m incredibly outgoing around these individuals, and there is nothing I love more than to be around them.

Diamond portrays conquering hardships. A year ago, a young SPJST member had his life taken from him. During our LIT camp, we all came together to grieve and remember his life. We surrounded a tree that was dedicated to his memory living on and prayed. Each of us wrote a message to him on a rock,

thanks to what this organization has taught me.

Join Hands Day was introduced in SPJST in 2000. This day was created to develop relationships between young people and adults through neighborhood volunteering.

This year’s Join Hands Day was May 16, and my youth club and adult lodge members gathered at Snook Cemetery to beautify it. By beautifying our cemetery, it showed me by joining, we can do a great service. Together.

Until I started writing this speech, I honestly didn’t know exactly what supporting humanity meant. I learned supporting humanity meant to be kind to everyone, show endless love and support, and do good for the human race. Through all my experiences in SPJST, I have learned that this treasure is a great quality to have.

These four treasures of SPJST have taught me how to be a better person, and they’ve helped me live a better life. As a Christian, these values have helped me become a better person also, and grow in my faith by doing good for others. If I am crowned SPJST State King today, I will do my best to make this world a better place. This I pledge. Thank you judges, and God bless.

I am so grateful for what SPJST has given me. This kind of treasure is

camp, and every year I continue meeting new people and extending my SPJST family. That’s what we become --- a family.

Finally, sapphire depicts joy. We give and receive this joy within our service projects. Because of Make a Difference Day, Join Hands Day, and numerous other service opportunities, I have fallen in love with giving --giving toys to foster kids without a home for Christmas, giving time to lonely retirement home residents, and giving care packages for refugees’ long journeys to safety, just to name a few. Because of our service opportunities, I’ve been able to log more than 350 hours of community service last year, and I’ve received the President’s Service Award for the past eight years. Just seeing the satisfaction after helping those in need is the most valuable treasure SPJST can offer.

I’ve once heard that life isn’t about finding treasure, it’s about creating it. This kind of treasure is nothing that can be stolen, that can be buried, that can be cashed in, but instead will be with me forever. Some people believe that SPJST just sells life insurance, but to me, it gives life.

SPJST Youth Beseda Dance Groups Participate at State YAD

The Beseda is a Czech dance that

has been around for many generations.

SPJST Youth Clubs perform the dance at events across Texas. Five groups exhibited the dance at the 2016 State Youth Achievement Day on August 6 in Temple.

The Beseda—A Czech Tradition The history of the beseda began back in ancient history. A number of small tribes settled in the central part of Europe and gradually grew into a group of small states, commonly known as Central European States in early history.

The Central European States were surrounded by savage warlike tribes, and

they had to band together for mutual protection. Their languages became similar over the years and first one state then another became dominant.

Because of the raiding and pillaging by the fierce warriors of the stronger tribes, the Central Europeans settled in small villages and towns for protection.

They went from there straight out to their farms and jobs.

They soon found that they couldn’t fight the stronger warriors and learned to outwit and outmaneuver them. When the people went away to war, the children were left with the old people of the village. To keep the children entertained, the grandparents told them folk tales of their ancestors and the heroes of the region.

District Two Beseda Dancers

Those tales and old love stories and other tales became folk songs and folk dances.

The word beseda, to us, means company or visitors. When they got together, they danced their favorite company dances or beseda. Later, the state leaders chose some of the most popular besedas and combined them to make a national dance for the big state and national celebrations. There are many variations of the beseda, and the costumes — kroje — as they came from different sections of the country.

After World War I, the area was renamed Czechoslovakia. Here in America, we dance many folk dances brought from Europe like the Highland

Fling from Scotland and the Irish jibs and reels. (In SPJST,) we also dance the Beseda to try to preserve it and some of the customs and traditions that have been passed down through the years by the people who originated in Central Europe.

Each of the eight parts of the Beseda tells a separate story—a throwback to the origin of the dance. The first part tells of a group of young people who are out having fun and the girls decide to look around to see if they can find new partners who are more to their liking.

The second part is part of the old game and so on, each part telling something about the early days.

State Queen Kacie’s Closing Remarks

This has been a whirlwind of a year, and I can’t believe that it has already come and gone. It has been filled with amazing people and memories that I will never forget and will treasure forever.

I have always loved attending State Youth Achievement Day (YAD), but this year, it is almost bittersweet because it means that my reign will truly be over, and I just wish that I could do it all over again. Not only is my reign ending, but so is my journey through the youth club. I’m excited about continuing on as an adult in SPJST, but there is something very special about being a youth member that I will greatly miss.

I have met so many people and made so many friends because of SPJST, and being State Queen increased that blessing tenfold. Of the many amazing people I met, one particular encounter that was my favorite was at the Caldwell Kolache Festival, where I got to meet Tomáš Hudeček, a former mayor of Prague. He is just one person on a never-ending list of amazing people I have met as queen.

I’m so thankful for everyone who helped me become State Queen. My family, my youth club leader, and everyone who encouraged me to run.

Without their support, I wouldn’t have done this, and I would have missed out

on something really amazing.

I’m also thankful for everyone who helped me throughout my reign. I could fill the entire Vestnik with a list of names of the people who had a part in making this past year possible. A few among these are Patsy, Lynette, Brian, Melanie, and David, to whom I am forever grateful for all that they have done.

This year, I was also blessed with an amazing court. Brady, Seth, and Makayla were all wonderful and so much fun to spend time with during events. I know it wasn’t always easy at times, and I’m so proud of them for pushing forward and giving it their all. I’m so glad that I got to have this experience with them, and I wish we could do it all over again.

I am also thankful to the families of my court. They were a huge source of support throughout appearances, and I am so grateful for them.

I could continue on and on about more people that I am thankful for, but I will end it here with just one more. I am thankful for SPJST because without it, I never would have been State Queen, and I never would have encountered all of these people. So thank you to SPJST and everyone in it.

SPJST Corpus Christi Get Away Weekend

Someone once said, “Family isn’t always blood. It’s the people in your life who want you in theirs; the ones who accept you for who you are; the ones who would do anything to see you smile and who love you no matter what.”

Indeed, it is! It takes time, effort, and creativity for relationships to grow and to flourish, and it is in that spirit that SPJST members gathered with family and friends on Friday, August 12 to Sunday, August 14, 2016, at Emerald Beach Hotel in the “Sparkling City by the Sea,” Corpus Christi, Texas. Many treasured memories were made throughout the weekend.

The Corpus Christ Getaway Weekend officially began at the Aloha Party on Friday evening in the hotel’s ballroom. The party included kolaches, buchtas, heavy hors d’oeuvres, a kolache eating contest, Czech spelling bee, hula hoop contest, limbo contest, “thinking of you” card craft, and a Hawaiian-themed photo booth.

Thanks to Lodge 79, Corpus Christi for co-hosting this event and for baking the kolaches and buchtas that were served. A variety of musical entertainment was provided by Blue Moon Entertainment Saturday morning’s activities centered around a big tent located just outside the hotel on the beach. Several teams participated in the horseshoe tournament and the sand sculpture contest. Sand sculptures featuring the

theme “Seeking the Treasures of SPJST” were judged by professionals with DC Sandman from Port Aransas.

Many participants also tried their luck in egg tossing and sand bag races.

Guests met in the ballroom at 12 noon for a pizza and salad luncheon.

A slideshow featuring photos from Friday evening’s and Saturday morning’s activities was also viewed during lunch. In the afternoon, the ballroom was divided in half for a 42 domino tournament on one side and a Bunco tournament on the other.

Saturday evening was one more opportunity for guests to get together and

enjoy a great time. Accordion Cowboy Chris Rybak entertained throughout the evening for everyone’s enjoyment.

Many guests dressed in costume, and the Buccaneer King and Queen were crowned from among the costumed guests. Congratulations to Buccaneer King Mark Childres of Lodge 196, Houston-West and Queen Darlene Polly of Lodge 88, Houston who were selected to reign over the evening’s festivities. Awards from Friday evening’s contests and Saturday’s tournaments were presented. District Seven hosted a prize drawing that benefitted the Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center and SPJST Education and Nature Center. The evening also included light snacks and a “Seeking the Treasures of SPJST”themed photo booth.

Guests said their goodbyes and looked forward to the next SPJST gathering to visit and make more treasured memories!

Youth Program Aims High To build character among the young and to pursue educational, pa-

triotic, social, and athletic recreation.

Those are the goals of SPJST’s statewide youth program.

On an annual basis, youth clubs from 29 lodges across the state sponsor a wide range of social activities, community service projects and charity projects. It’s about having fun, but it’s also about contributing to the welfare of the people of Texas.

The educational aspect of the SPJST Youth Program is an integral part of local youth club activities. State and local programs address a range of areas, including human relations, nature, parliamentary procedure, juvenile decency, arts and crafts, the fine arts, music, dramatics and Czech tradition. Youth club members range from grades kindergarten to high school senior.

The patriotic program consists of ceremonial rituals and an annual essay contest. The objective is to teach the operation of a free democratic society and majority rule. The social program includes parties, dances, picnics, pageants, hay rides, and family group activities.

Paid Up at 65 Whole Life. You are covered to age 100, but you only pay premiums to age 65. Cash values are available and continue to grow to age 100.
