Johnnie said that he is lucky to be here today. Years before he was born, his mother was very sick so his father rode a horse to Buckholts to tell the doctor how sick she was, and if he could come to check on her. Later, the doctor came on a horse and buggy. The doctor examined her and told his father that she was very ill. She couldn’t keep any food in her stomach and had double pneumonia. The doctor didn’t have anything he could give her, and he said that she would die. As the
doctor started to leave, my father stopped him and asked if there was anything that he could do to save his wife. The doctor studied for a minute and asked him if he could get some good moonshine whiskey. He said that he could. The doctor told him to pour one jigger of whiskey into a half glass of milk with one raw egg and a good amount of black pepper and let her drink this and see if this would stay in her stomach. He did this, and she didn’t vomit. An hour later, he made her drink another
one. Later in the night, her fever broke, and she started feeling better. Johnnie’s mother lived to be 84 years old. Johnnie’s father always said that whiskey saved his mother’s life. When Johnnie’s father was born, the midwife couldn’t get him to cry. She tried everything. She slapped him on his behind, but still no crying. The midwife asked Johnnie’s grandmother if they had any whiskey. She said there is a bottle in the kitchen. The midwife got the whiskey and poured some on her finger and placed her finger on his tongue. This brought out a big cry. Johnnie’s father always joked telling people that he drank whiskey before he drank milk. He lived to be 92 years old. A couple of months after Johnnie
