hat a wonderful surprise it was to see longtime member Sydney Jurchak of Lodge 88, Houston!

I accompanied Lodge 88 youth, parents, and leaders to The Heritage in Tomball on February 13. As we were making valentines and decorating cupcakes with the residents, in walks a smiling, handsome Brother Sydney! It was so nice to see him, and I very much enjoyed our visit.

Save the Date—Saturday, May 7 The 2016 SPJST Car Show and Czech Heritage Celebration is Saturday, May 7 at Lodge 47, Seaton Star Hall. Activities will include music, Czech demonstrations and displays, a kolache eating contest, and kids’ activities. A silent auction and prize giveaways are also in the works. The Praha Bros. will entertain during the afternoon. Proceeds will benefit the Czech Heritage Museum and SPJST Education and Nature Center. It’s going to be a great day in Seaton, Texas, on Saturday, May 7. Make plans to attend. More details are on page 38.

Cyclone church invites all to Springfest

Dear Members and Friends, St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Cyclone, Texas, will host its annual Springfest on Sunday, March 20, 2016, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Plates consisting of homefried chicken, sausage, dressing, coleslaw, noodles, and dessert will be available for $9 each. Plates will be available for dine-in or to-go.

Homemade bread, pastries, and canned goods will be available, and a prize drawing will be held.

Matchmaking . . .

Vestnik Style?

My grandfather, Jim Wesley Matlock, was born Vincenc Matlocha in 1901 in Belov, Moravia. He immigrated to the United States with his parents and siblings in 1907. One additional sibling was born in Texas a couple of years later. The family name was soon “Americanized” to Matloch and then to Matlock. In 1925, Jim married Bozena “Bessie” Dolezal in Weimar, Texas, and soon moved to Columbus. A year later, while living in Columbus, Jim applied for his naturalization. Jim and Bessie’s marriage produced one son before Bessie died on January 25, 1927, just two and onehalf months after their son’s birth.

In another part of Texas, my grandmother, Mary Takacs, was born in

1903 in Ennis. Mary’s mother was a Hubacek born in Czechoslovakia, and Mary’s father had been born in Hungary. Mary married Paul Macek and had two daughters. They lived in Ennis a little while before moving to Wichita Falls, Texas. Mary had her own sorrows. On November 25, 1927, as she was hanging laundry on the clothesline and the two small girls, ages 11 months and four years, were playing in the yard when Paul came home from work, walked into the house, and shot himself.

Jim and Mary found each other, married in July 1928, and had five additional children, of which their first, a baby girl, was stillborn. Grandpa’s naturalization was eventually granted in 1942. An interesting note is that the judge who signed Jim’s naturalization certificate was the son of the man who issued the family’s emigration papers in Czechoslovakia more than 40 years earlier. Grandma died in 1978, less than two months short of their 50th wedding anniversary. Grandpa died in 1983. Their descendants continue to live throughout Texas with only a few venturing outside of the state.

Our “family legend” holds that my grandfather had placed an ad in a newspaper looking for a wife and grandma answered the ad. What else was a farmer with a young son to do?

His son believes the ad was in the Vestnik. What a find it would be if we could locate that newspaper ad from 1927-1928.

Lodge Incentive Guidelines

The 2016 Lodge Incentive Guidelines will include membership program incentives and be based upon premium income generated by the lodges. The formula for calculating the Enhanced Premium Refund is:

1. $1.00 for each paid-up certificate; and 2. 2.80% of the lodge’s annual earned premium.

To receive the Enhanced Premium Refund, lodges must meet the following three-point criteria:

1. Hold regular lodge meetings in accordance with Article 50 of the SPJST By-Laws and offer a wellrounded fraternal program.

2. Return all requested paperwork on time by the due date.

3. Submit regular letters/photos to the Vestnik.

Under “Supreme Lodge” on page 4 of the By-Laws of SPJST that were approved in the 2012 Convention, a screening process will be established “for the purpose of reviewing all qualifications of submitted candidates for Supreme Lodge Officers, Editor/Director of Communication, and seven directors. The screening committee has the right to gather additional background information, submit the slate of qualified candidates to the delegates 90 days prior to convention, and shall have the discretion to consult with personnel with legal and human resource expertise to assure compliance with current labor laws. The By-Law Committee will be the screening committee.”

The By-Law Committee screened the announcements for elected Supreme Lodge officer positions (President, Vice President, and SecretaryTreasurer) based on the following requirements, as outlined in the bylaws: SUPREME LODGE ARTICLE 26.

To be an elected officer of the Supreme Lodge, an individual must meet the following requirements:

(a) Be an active member of this Society for at least five consecutive years prior

(d) Have knowledge of both the Czech and English languages. (e) Is a citizen of the United States of America at the time of election. (f) Must have at least $50,000 of insurance or if uninsurable, then an annuity in at least the amount of $20,000. Such insurance or annuity to be with SPJST.

The By-Law Committee screened the announcements for elected Supreme Lodge director positions based on the following requirements, as outlined in the by-laws:

DIRECTORS ARTICLE 39. (a) To be a director of the Supreme Lodge, an individual must meet the following requirements:

1. Be an active member of the Society for at least five consecutive years preceding his election. Also have met local lodge attendance requirements same as delegates. Supreme Lodge members attending Supreme Lodge meetings, district meetings, and local lodge meetings, on this same date qualify as attending a regular meeting for this purpose.

2. Be a citizen of the United States of America at the time of his election.

3. Be capable of assuming the responsibilities as outlined in the constitution under the heading of “Directors”.

4. Is present at the convention or has an excuse acceptable by two-thirds majority of the delegates for not being present.

5. Has a knowledge of both the Czech language and culture and is fluent in the English language.

The By-Law Committee screened the announcement for the elected Vestnik Editor/Director of Communication position based on the following requirements, as outlined in the by-laws: ARTICLE 85.

The editor/director of communication must be an SPJST member, possess journalistic qualifications, have knowledge of the Czech and English languages, be responsible for a Czech and English section in the Vestnik, and be well-versed in media law, especially as this relates to privacy concern issues and libel.

Based on these requirements and a pre-background check to ensure that individuals who will lead SPJST are well-qualified and to ensure that SPJST maintains a safe and productive environment, we present the following slate of qualified candidates. The positions will be elected at the 32nd SPJST Convention to be held June 13 to 15 in Killeen.

Dear By-Law Committee, My by-law recommendation is: I would like to know who in SPJST is responsible to enforce, administer, revise, and maintain the Operations Manual. If there is no one responsible, you need to assign someone within the Supreme Lodge or a director to inform the membership about the Operations Manual changes. This individual should be someone other than the Chairman of the Board because he already has too many responsibilities.

The membership should know about changes and other things that affect all of the members between conventions because there must be changes that we do not know about. They should be approved by the Supreme Lodge or the convention.

Dear By-Law Committee Members, We, as members, do not know who is responsible for hiring individuals for Supreme Lodge Officers and have only a limited knowledge of the qualifications as published in the Vestnik. Independent agencies are good to help hiring people, but SPJST needs to be involved.

We do not need a popularity contest going on or if you know someone, give them the job either. Officers need to be QUALIFIED. Employees need to be QUALIFIED. Unqualified people have hurt SPJST in the past, and we do not need that situation in the future.

These Officers, elected or hired, currently report to ???? or maybe do not report to anyone because each department seems to work independently and knows nothing about another department (general knowledge should be known by all officers). They, as well as the employees, should have performance reviews. We need to know if they are performing to SPJST benefit or are there just to draw a paycheck. Publishing annual performance reviews need not be extremely detailed but they should be listed as excellent, good, fair, or unacceptable.

Convention Considerations January 14, 2016

Dear By-Law Committee, I want the convention chairperson to give a vote count on every issue addressed in the convention. I want to hear ___ for and ___ against.

I do not want to hear “The item passed” without a hand count given if one was called for.

In the last convention, I witnessed this happening by the Convention Chair and thought it was not right. No one really grasped what happened so it was not questioned. Only after the bylaws were accepted, did we as well as

other delegates realize there was not the show of hands and a count given to approve a certain recommendation.

And each delegate should vote for the betterment of SPJST, not at the direction of their District Director when he/she makes their recommendation. I did see one district vote either all or none for issues that came across the convention floor. That is not the way we all should represent our lodges and not all lodges within a district have the same recommendation. Each lodge’s membership should vote for the betterment of SPJST. Convention Consideration January 17, 2016

Re: Lodge Loan Forgiveness Procedure

Dear By-Law Committee, Lodge 25 recently asked for loan forgiveness because rentals have decreased to a minimum, and we had trouble making payments and paying bills.

Then, I see and read that at a recent board meeting provided some extra assistance, not approved by delegates, for the ENC. (ENC was given $$ or loan forgiveness in another year since the last convention also.) I understand they are for the good of all SPJST. Lodges help SPJST keep their fraternal status.

What if the lodges did not help you keep your fraternal status, you would probably really be upset. Everything would change. (It’s a two way street . . . Lodges help SPJST and SPJST should help the lodges.)

So what has SPJST done for struggling lodges. So far, nothing. Refinancing is not an option. Yes, it lowers our payments but we have to pay so much longer, and the total value of the loan and interest goes way up. Since the board set some sort of procedure for ENC, a procedure was addressed by the directors in the past.

We are struggling to pay our loan off and then the bills could become manageable. I am sure there are other lodges in the same situation.

Re: Large Expenditures

Dear By-Law Committee, For instance, the Supreme Lodge board decided on their own to pay someone big bucks to design a new logo. This issue happened near one convention. Why could it not have been addressed in the convention.

Other large expenditures are addressed and usually pass because a lot of the delegates on the convention floor are not voting for the betterment of the lodges and the organization; many vote like their friends do. It is my understanding, I should vote for or against issues for the betterment of the organization.

I also think there should be a provision in the by-laws to limit what the board can approve without presenting it to the delegates of the previous convention. Maybe a maximum should be $10,000. Our directors make good decisions but once again, do they vote like the person next to them because it is a popularity vote? Our previous director, John Krizan, was noted for voting against many things and maybe more of the other directors should have voted the way they felt and not the way everyone else did.

Re: Christmas Bonus and Other Extra Compensations, if any

Dear By-Law Committee, Seems like I remember years ago that a Christmas bonus was published in the Vestnik. I think it was no longer published after someone made a note of it.

I don’t remember the exact amount but something tells me that it was a month’s salary for the officers. I don’t know what employees received.

I feel this was excessive especially the years our bottom line was not increasing or staying balanced. I feel that a Christmas bonus should only be paid

if SPJST is improving as a whole because there can be rewards. But one month’s salary should be limited. I feel in profitable years, the officers should receive $500 and employees should receive $250. I don’t know where directors fit in this scale, but they should be given a Christmas bonus accordingly.

I don’t think a Christmas bonus was ever addressed in the by-laws. It is an expense so it should be addressed in the by-laws or operations manual, as long as the membership knows the amounts.

A few changes I would like to propose are:

Recommendations - Section 8 Item (c) — We recommend that this item be changed to read as follows: Elect Supreme Lodge President, Vice President, Secretary-Treasurer, Editor/Director of Communication, district directors, and all required committees.

Item (f) — We recommend that this item be totally deleted.

Recommendation - Section 19 We recommend to change this section to read as follows: Election of Supreme Lodge President, Vice President, Secretary-Treasurer, Editor/Director of Communication, and District Directors, with those elected to these offices serving until the next scheduled convention dates. Convention Recommendations

1) I do believe that all sales agents should be active lodge members. The reason is they need to understand and be able to sell all aspects of SPJST - not just insurance.

2) I think there should be term limits for committee members. The reason is if you have the same members all of the time, a lot of times people get comfortable in that position and new ideas get pushed aside because they don’t agree even if it is for the greater good.

3) I think that all department heads should be voted in - not hired. There is little accountability to the members if they are hired. Even if the directors interview the prospects and bring the eligible people to the delegation for a vote.

Why Change Is Recommended

With convention time drawing near, there is a lot of discussion as to why some of the recommendations for change in our governance structure are being made. As a result, there are a lot of misconceptions and misunderstandings as to what will be taking place. First of all, there is no law that is saying that we must change to hiring - and not electing - the management team of SPJST. The act that has been adopted by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), known as the Corporate Governance Annual Filing Model Act, is what is bringing about this change.

The act is referred to as the Corporate Governance Annual Disclosure Act (CGAD) which all insurance companies are going to have to abide by.

This act has already been adopted by several states and is expected to be put into place in all states by the end of 2017 or 2018. The reason this has not been done in Texas is because the state legislature has not been in session since the middle of 2015 and will return to session in 2017. Remember, our Texas Legislature only meets every two years, and the CGAD became effective on January 1, 2016.

The first filings of the CGAD are to begin in 2016 in the states which have already adopted it. However, insurers are being told to begin preparing their report in states where it has not been adopted because regulators will be looking for it anyway starting in 2016.

This act drastically changes the way that the NAIC and its regulators are going to look at the way insurance companies and fraternals do business.

The purpose of the act is to:

1. Provide the Insurance Commissioner a summary of an insurer or insurance group’s corporate governance structure, policies, and practices to permit the Insurance Commissioner to gain and maintain an understanding of the insurer’s corporate governance framework.

2. Outline the requirements for completing a corporate governance annual filing with the Insurance Commissioner.

3. Provide for the confidential treatment of the corporate governance annual filing and related information that will contain confidential and sensitive information related to an insurer or insurance group’s internal operations and proprietary and trade secret

information which, if made public, could potentially cause the insurer or insurance group competitive harm or disadvantage.

With these things in mind, a full disclosure must be made to the Texas Insurance Commissioner upon the adoption by the Texas Legislature.

The content of the filing will address all of the following topics: 1. Description of corporate governance framework.

2. Description of board of directors and committee policies and practices.

3. Description of management policies and practices, and

4. Description of management and oversight of critical risk areas.

As you can see, these are major changes in what the regulators will be looking for and will require that we must have the most qualified and competent individuals in our management positions. With this being said, the next thing deals with how the management team is selected. Best Governance Practices as established by regulators, says that the weakest and most risky form of governance is the process of electing officers to their positions and being accountable to the people and not the board who has the ultimate responsibility of overseeing the entire organization. Too many times in the past, management has been elected based on popularity and not having the qualifications to do the job which they were elected to do.

This has led to many fraternals having problems with financial stability because the management does not possess the necessary qualifications to do their jobs effectively. Because of this, regulators are placing more responsibility on the directors and making them accountable for the success or failure of the organization.

SPJST has very minimal qualifications for anyone seeking a position as an officer or director. This is very common among fraternals throughout the nation and has caused the regulators to say changes need to take place.

The board is the ultimate stopping point when it comes to the protection of the society. (The buck stops here.)

At the Master Board Institute sponsored by the American Fraternal Alliance which I attended this past fall,

the topic of governance was discussed very thoroughly. Some of the key takeaways coming out of this session were:

1. The election of officers procedure is coming to an end.

2. Boards need a code of ethics and a conflict of interest.

3. Directors need to be professional and diverse.

4. There is a need for some fraternal board members.

5. Management leadership must be qualified.

6. Directors need to appoint principal officers.

7. Directors must conduct annual evaluations.

8. Directors need to approve the compensation plan.

9. There is no more important decision that the board makes than hiring qualified leaders.

10. Regulators are going to continue getting more involved in this area.

This stresses the fact that our current method of doing things to insure the financial stability of the SPJST is at risk.

Our officers and their duties are very critical. When you look at the responsibilities that they have, we cannot have someone who is very popular and does not possess the qualifications to do the job. As a result of a lot of study and discussion, the Special Structure Committee came up with a plan which is in the middle of what the regulators and the American Fraternal Alliance are saying and what many want.

The positions of Vice President, Secretary-Treasurer, and Financial Secretary are the most critical as far as how business is done and their reporting to the Insurance Commissioner and his regulators. The Vice President is in charge of the Insurance Department. With that, he is the chief underwriter, must manage a large staff, stay current with insurance laws, and most importantly, have a background in marketing. He is the one who leads the Society in sales and must market our organization and our products so that we can insure ourselves of a continu-

ing stream of income through premiums, renewal premiums, and annuities. He must manage a large field of insurance agents who are volunteers and part-time along with a few career agents. This is no easy task, and the need to have someone in this position with qualifications is imperative.

In the Secretary-Treasurer’s Department, this individual must stay current with the laws of the state when it comes to paying death claims, but most importantly, he must have a deep background in investments because this is the heart and soul of our organization. Without the proper investing of funds, the financial stability of the organization can be devastating. We cannot have someone in this department who does not possess this knowledge. In addition to these duties, the Secretary-Treasurer is responsible for our mortgage loan portfolio.

Laws have drastically changed regarding loans, and he must be able to stay current and be able to interpret the changes made by regulators.

Someone without this knowledge could not serve in this position.

The Financial Secretary’s position is the other position where a lot of qualifications must be possessed.

This position is already a hired position, and we have someone in it who is above reproach. The financial secretary must have a background in accounting, preferably a CPA designation, to complete the financial reports of the Society. Not just anyone can complete the annual statement. In addition to accounting, this position requires knowledge in technology utilizing our computer system. Today, we have come a long way in this area, but we still have a long way to go to be up with the 21st century because we were so far behind.

As you can see, the positions we are asking you to decide on are very critical in the overall operation and success of SPJST. These positions need to be hired to insure that a qualified individual will fill them. Too many times in the past history of fraternals, individuals who did not possess these qualifications were elected, and, as a result, the solvency and financial stability of the Society were put at risk. This is what regulators are looking at and telling all fraternals that we must start doing things differently because we are charged with managing monies of our members who count on us being here for a long time and will be their security in their time of need.

These changes are not changes we

are recommending just because we want to, but because this is what the regulators are saying. We cannot ignore their requests nor can we take the attitude that we can still do what we want to do regardless of what the regulators say. It is our choice to be proactive and make the necessary changes now before someone comes along and tells us how we are going to have to do it. The choice is ours now but in the near future, it probably will not be the case. I pray that all of you, especially the delegates, realize the seriousness of what we are trying to do and not have a closed mind about change which is necessary.

Our society will still have the opportunity to elect a President, Editor/Director of Communication, and seven District Directors. Fraternalism is not at risk, and you control the future of SPJST through electing qualified directors who have a vision to enhance the success of SPJST and its continued growth. In the hiring of the other positions, being a fraternalist will be the first qualification but the more pressing thing is to make sure the individual possesses the qualifica-

tions to do the job without the Society having to hire someone else to do the work for them and then just signing off on it.

If you choose to not adhere to hiring these key positions, then SPJST must come up with some stringent qualifications to make sure that qualified individuals are elected to the key management positions and district director positions. We do not need just anyone to be able to seek a position without possessing the necessary qualifications to do the job and putting our organization at risk.

We have a mission which is “Insuring and Enriching Lives” and to do this, we must be financially stable and solvent. We must also make sure we have the most qualified individuals in our management positions to insure this. We all know that we are a nonprofit, but without a profit, there is no mission!

Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska introduced attorney Jamey Secrest to report on a proposed real estate transaction. Attorney Secrest reviewed the status of mineral rights reservations and a definition of the surface rights we are purchasing and responded to requests for clarification.

James Lee was introduced to the Supreme Lodge. He was recently selected to work with the SPJST Foundation. Mr. Lee presented his plans for moving the Foundation forward.

SPJST is offering a wonderful opportunity to advance and enhance your career. On April 11, 12, and 13, 2016, there will be a three-day class at the SPJST Home Office that will prepare you to pass an exam to be a licensed life insurance agent.

You will receive all of the help you will need to pass the exam, including an up-to-date textbook and CD for home study. The author of the textbook will be your teacher, Dr. B. J. Sims, an experienced instructor whose success rate for first-time test-takers has been a phenomenal 98 percent.

Saturday, May 7, 2016 SPJST Car Show and Czech Heritage Celebration Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls! Make plans to join in the fun and festivities of the 2016 SPJST Car Show and Czech Heritage Celebration to be held Saturday, May 7 at SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton Star Hall. Seaton Star Hall is located approximately seven miles east of Temple, just off Highway 53.

What kind of event will it be?

There will be cars! And more cars!

There will be Czech heritage displays, music, and entertainment. Admission is free. Donations and proceeds generated from event underwriters as well as from the silent and live auctions will benefit the Czech Heritage Museum in Temple, Texas and the SPJST Education and Nature Center. It is no accident that the event coincides with Join Hands Day, May 7. If your lodge or youth club is still looking for a Join Hands Day event, the 2016 SPJST Car Show and Czech Heritage Celebration could be the place for you! Booth space is available to all comers $25 for a 10 x 10 space outside and $35 for a 10 x 10 space inside. Lodges and youth clubs will have this fee waivered if all proceeds are donated back to the Czech Heritage Museum and or the SPJST Education and Nature Center. No food concessions, please. Lodges Invited to Apply for Join Hands Day Incentives Saturday, May 7 marks the date for this year’s Join Hands Day. Join Hands Day is a program of the American Fraternal Alliance. The 128-year old organization unites not-for-profit fraternal benefit societies that operate in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Canada. We hope your lodge has discussed plans for a project to involve youth, adults and/or other organizations to make improvements in your community. This year, SPJST wants the lodges to invite other community organizations such as Lions Club, Volunteer Fire Departments, Kiwanis, Boy/Girl Scouts. You can visit American Fraternal Alliance webpage for some great ideas.

The Supreme Lodge again will offer the $100 incentive to all lodges that register their project with the Home Office. 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive As we head into the final month for our 2016 Scholarship Drive, now is the time to send in your contribution to the Home Office. Through your generous donations, SPJST has been able to continue to provide scholarships to members who wish to further their education. Since its inception in 1982, the Scholarship Program has presented SPJST scholars with over 2,100 scholarships valued at more than $1.5 million. Our goal this year is to raise $20,000. This is in addition to the allocation the Supreme Lodge has made. Any amount you submit will be greatly appreciated.

State “42” Domino Tournament The SPJST State 42 Domino Tournament will be held on Saturday, April 2, 2016. The tournament will be held at the SPJST Home Office in Temple, Texas. All participants are encouraged to pre-register by Monday, March 28 so we can figure out the amount of food to prepare for the noon meal.

End of Summer Get Away It is not too early to start planning for the Corpus Christi Get Away August 12, 13, and 14. This event gets bigger and better each year. Last year, approximately 368 men, women, boys and girls from across the state came out to enjoy the weekend fraternal celebration.

Once again, the 2016 celebration commences with the Aloha Party Friday night. Plans are being made to also host the deep-sea fishing outing for those wanting to get a jump on the weekend fun. This year, please remember to bring you own Dramamine for seasickness. Saturday’s events will once again include sand sculpting, horseshoes, 42, Bunco, and an evening

District Two officers extend an invitation to the candidates running for Supreme Lodge positions. We would like to give each candidate three minutes during the business meeting to address the members and delegates. Please plan to stay after the meeting so members will have the opportunity to meet with you personally to ask questions that they may have for you.

We will not have an adult contest this year due to this year’s convention.

District Six Spring Meeting Sunday, April 3 at Moravia Parish Hall

The District Six Spring Meeting will be Sunday, April 3, 2016, at the Parish Hall in Moravia. Lodge 23, Moravia will host the event with registration starting at 11 a.m. A delicious catered meal will be served at 12 noon. All lodges attending are asked to bring two desserts and a door prize.

The audit and nominating committees will meet at 10:30 a.m. Members of the audit committee are Debbie Krpec (30), Jeanette Kaminsky (28), and Janie Bucek (151). Members of the nominating committee are Joseph Nezval (28) and Gay Revel (97).

Immediately following the noon meal, special reports will be given by district representatives for the Czech Heritage Museum, Education and Nature Center, Senior Living Centers (rest

homes), and Cemetery Committees.

After the meeting is called to order, reports will be given by the standing committees, including By-Law, Publication, Finance, and Insurance. District representatives for these committees should be present to give their reports.

Dear Members, The lodge met Sunday, February 4, 2016, at the chamber meeting room at 3 p.m. with President Joe Siptak presiding.

Secretary-Treasurer Helen Zabransky read the minutes to the last meeting and gave the financial report.

FAC Annie Vahalik reported on upcoming activities. She also told the members about the SPJST Progressive 42 Domino Tournament she and her son Nick participated in. They had a good time. The members were reminded to think about a Join Hands Day project.

It was voted to have an ad in the Convention program as before. A donation will be given to the 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive.

Reports were given on the SPJST Incentive Awards Banquet attended by Patsy and Helen on January 30. On display was the nice plaque the lodge received. The next day, Joe and Helen attended the State FAC and district presidents’ meeting while Susan attended the district youth counselor and assistant DYC meeting.

A discussion was held, and it was agreed to participate in the statewide youth food drive. Members may bring bags of beans and rice to the March meeting where the bags will be weighed, and the total amount collected reported to the DYC. The food will be given to a food pantry.

Being February and Valentine’s Day, Susan and Joe gave out candy to the members, and FAC Annie gave out chocolate candy bars.

“Happy Birthday” was sung to Joe Siptak - it being his birthday - and to Philip Vahalik who had a birthday the day before.

The meeting adjourned followed by a delicious lunch.

Door prize winners were Philip Vahalik, Helen Zabransky, and Annie Vahalik.

Everyone then had fun playing bingo led by FAC Annie. The prizes all had the color red. Everyone was a winner.

Lodge 8, Weimar meets March 28

Lodge 8, Weimar met Monday, February 22, 2016, at 6 p.m. at Oakridge Smokehouse Restaurant in Schulenburg. Various business was discussed.

District Six Director Karen Kaspar presented the lodge membership with their annual enhanced premium refund for 2015. They also received a plaque from the annual SPJST state awards banquet.

Celebrating birthdays for February were Arlene Marshall on the 6th and Rosie Shumbera on the 2nd.

SPJST Lodge 9, Snook meeting was called to order on Wednesday, March 2, 2016, by President Donnie Hejl at 7 p.m. Jordan Hejl led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Minutes from the February meeting were read and approved. The hall manager’s, treasurer’s, FAC’s, and statewide reports were given.

Loree Lewis gave the youth club report. Youth and adults are encouraged to attend the spring meeting on April 10 in Caldwell and participate in Join Hands Day on May 7 when we clean the Snook Cemetery.

Under old business, the gutters have been installed.

March birthdays include Donnie Victorick on the 23rd and Janice Victorick on the 25th.

Dear Vestnik Readers, Lodge 30, Taiton held its regular monthly meeting on Sunday, February 7, 2016, at Taiton Community Center.

President Yvonne Marcaurele called the meeting to order. Members present recited the Pledge of Allegiance led by Jacob Supak, and a moment of silence was observed for any sick or departed members with a special mention for Leona Macha.

Secretary Wanda Dorotik called the roll of officers and members. She then read the January meeting minutes.

Treasurer Lisa Bubela gave her report on the financial standing of our lodge. She had no outstanding bills at

FAC Crystal Bacak informed members of the upcoming events around the state. She reminded members that our theme for this year is “Seeking Treasures of SPJST.” District Six Spring Meeting will be hosted by Lodge 23, Moravia on April 3. Watch the Vestnik for details. May 7 is Join Hands Day. Each member is asked to bring dried beans and rice to the March meeting to be donated to our local food pantry.

Youth Leader Lisa Bubela gave the report on the comings and goings of our youth program. She informed members that a youth workshop is planned for March 6 and encouraged all members to attend.

District Six Director Karen Kaspar then shared her recent activities. She had attended the recent Supreme Lodge meeting and participated as the chairperson for the audit committee. She discussed the upcoming district meeting as well as the convention planning meeting. She also shared that she received recognition for her 15 years working with the Home Office. Congratulations were wished to her for a job very well done! She then thanked President Marcaurele for attending the District Six Cemetery Association meeting in Moravia recently.

Old Business Karen and Lisa then gave a report on the banquet. Our lodge received the Gold Star Award this year. Our youth received the “top youth club” award.

Bacak for representing our lodge as fraternalist of the year.

District Six Spring Meeting will be held in Moravia on Sunday, April 3.

On Sunday, March 13, we will participate in the annual St. John’s Altar Society Chicken Dinner. Each member is asked to bring a cake to the cake walk.

New Business Please bring bags of dried beans and rice to the March meeting to be donated to the local food pantry. We will weigh the donations and report to Lynette Talasek for a statewide charity event.

Happy birthday was wished to Debbie Krpec. We wish her many more to come.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, March 6 at Taiton Community Center.

The adult meeting will begin at 4:30 p.m. after the youth club meeting. This will follow the district youth workshop which begins at 1 p.m.

Lodge 35, Elk reports on February meeting

President Randy Pavelka called the SPJST Lodge 35, Elk meeting to order on Wednesday February 10, 2016, at 7:15 p.m.

Members and guests recited the Pledge of Allegiance.

Mary Mann was on the sick list after having knee replacement surgery. We all hope you are getting well and moving around better now.

Secretary Carla Pavelka read the January minutes, and they were approved as read.

Treasurer Barbara Pavelka read the minutes of the January meeting, and they were approved as read.

A $500 check from the SPJST Supreme Lodge was presented to Fred Kubitza, president of the SPJST Pavelka Cemetery Association.

Floor Chairman Gene Pavelka presented his report.

District Three Director John Engelke presented a check to the lodge for the enhanced premium refund for 2015.

With no other business the meeting was adjourned.

Elk Hall, Inc. President Randy Pavelka called the Elk Hall, Inc. meeting to order at 7:37 p.m. Secretary Carla Pavelka read her report for January, and it was approved as read.

Treasurer Barbara Pavelka read her report for January, and it was approved as read. Floor Chairman Gene Pavelka gave his great report. Bar Chairman Randy Pavelka gave his report with having a great month, too.

Thank you, Walter Kubitza, for doing some repairs on the outside of the building.

There were some lucky winners of door prizes brought by John Engelke and Diana.

Lodge 48 Beyersville to host District Two Spring Meeting

The adult meeting of Lodge 48, Beyersville began February 15, 2016, at 6:39 p.m. with the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence for Denise Pokorny.

January minutes were read by Juanette Meiske, and they were accepted and passed.

Janet Filla gave the hall report and youth report. A community garage sale is planned for February 26 and 27, and youth will run a concession stand.

Brett Wuensche gave the fraternal activities coordinator report.

Bobby Wuensche gave the property report update on painting of the hall which plans to be complete before the District Two Spring Meeting on Sunday, March 13 at Lodge 48.

Lodge 79 Corpus Christi celebrates Valentine’s Day

On February 20, 2016, Lodge 79, Corpus Christi celebrated a belated Valentine’s Day with a potluck meal.

The meeting was called to order by President Mark Rebecek. Youth guest Bailey LaCour led all in the Pledge of Allegiance. We had 26 members and guests present. All officers were present except for Secretary Virginia Rebecek. Member Jill Sijansky read the January minutes and took the February minutes for Secretary Virginia Rebecek.

On the sick list was myself, Virginia Rebecek. I had knee replacement surgery and was recovering at home. Also Sue Majek, daughter-in-law of Judy Majek, is recovering from pancreatitis.

Member Leona Grant was informed she has colon cancer. She is in our prayers.

President Mark Rebecek introduced guest Donnie Howard. Donnie stated he is running for District Seven Director. It was a pleasure having Donnie at our meeting.

The January minutes were read and approved.

Treasurer Frank Sacky gave the January financial report, and it was approved.

FAC report was given by Vice President/FAC Jerry Sijansky. He stated S.P.J.S.T. has acquired the Hillje nursing home. It is S.P.J.S.T.’s third home.

The Taylor rest home plans on opening in June. Lodge 47, Seaton has a scholarship fund for Brother Frank Klinkovsky. They are selling tickets, and our lodge purchased some.

There was no unfinished business.

Youth Leader Marcia Rew stated the youth are collecting bags of rice and beans. These items will be donated to the Food Bank. Asked all members to bring these items to our next meeting.

The youth played games and received valentine gifts from our lodge. At the next meeting a nutritionist will come and speak to the youth about healthy eating.

Next Meeting—March 20 Our next meeting will be Sunday, March 20. We will be celebrating 50year members with SPJST with a catered meal of roast beef and all the trimmings. So bring your appetite and there will be nice door prizes, too.

I want to thank Jill Sijansky for taking minutes for me at the February meeting and for all the flowers, get well cards, and emails I received while I am recovering from knee replacement surgery. I am doing fairly well, doing outpatient therapy now, and can’t wait until I am fully recovered. Also I thank Mark, my husband, for his patience and support.

I don’t know what I would have done without him and all my friends. Thank you again with all my heart.

Lodge 84, Dallas reports on February meeting

Dear Members, The February meeting was brought to order at 2:10 p.m. on Sunday, the 21st, by President Justine Yeager. Flag Bearer Lynda Novak led all present in the Pledge of Allegiance. A moment of silence was held for Sister Bessie Petr and Brother James English.

Secretary Cherri Petr then read the minutes which were approved by all after a few amendments. Sister Cherri also gave a report on correspondence.

Several old and new business items were discussed before committee reports were given.

Sunshine Lady JoAnn Manak reported that a sympathy card was sent to the James and Lynda Novak family and Larry and Liz Petr family on the loss of mother Bessie Petr. May she rest in peace.

FAC Vicki Sims reported on the state food drive being conducted and that dry rice and bagged beans were being collected to donate to a charity of choice.

Lodge 84, Dallas to elect head youth leader

Lodge 84, Dallas met Sunday, February 21, 2016. A motion was made to place Lynda Novak in the interim position of head youth leader. The position was vacated when Bessie Petr passed away on February 12. Lynda accepted the interim position, and the members approved the motion. A motion was also made and approved to hold an election at next month’s meeting to fill the head youth leader’s position. Members have nominated Lynda for the position.

At our next meeting on Sunday, March 20 at 2 p.m., a formal election will take place with Lynda’s name on the ballot, and we will elect the head youth leader at this meeting.

Lodge 92 Fort Worth plans March activities Lodge 88, Houston Youth Club invites all to March 19 Easter egg hunt

Dear Members, Lodge 88, Houston Youth Club invites you and your guests to the annual Easter party on Saturday, March 19, 2016, from 2 to 4 p.m. We will have various age groups including the adults who would like to hunt. There will be prizes, a drawing, lots of colored, hard boiled, and plastic-filled eggs, food, and a visit from the Easter Bunny.

Lodge 101 Gainesville sets reorganizational meeting for March 24

At the January meeting, members expressed a strong desire to move forward with the formal reorganization of their lodge.

The reorganizational meeting of Lodge 101, Gainesville will take place at 12 noon on Thursday, March 24 at The Neu Ranch House, located at 1825 US 82 in Gainesville.

It was approved to go with a one line well wish greeting.

Members discussed and approved donations to the 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive and to Gordon Memorial Library for the use of their meeting room.

On February 27, 2016, SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton held the first Frank Klinkovsky, Sr. Memorial Tarok Tournament. We had a good turnout with 44 players showing up ready to play.

and their parents participate in placing flags on graves of veterans at seven local cemeteries. This year, 400 flags will be ordered since we have about 200 flags left over from previous years.

Dora Martinez offered to make a $125 donation towards the expenses of Join Hands Day. Her offer was graciously accepted. We will meet at the Sealy Cemetery at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 7.

District One Director Donnie Victorick spoke about the awards banquet and presented a plaque to the lodge which was accepted by Rick Martinez.

He also spoke about the upcoming convention.

Lodge 142 Houston gives to organizations

Lodge 142, Houston President Keith Kieschnick called the meeting to order.

Karley Kieschnick led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Everyone remained standing for longtime member Eugene Veselka, who transferred to the Schulenburg lodge upon his retirement.

Brother Veselka passed away recently.

Roll call of officers showed Secretary Alice Jochen and Sales Agent Carita Felbermayr were not present.

Keith appointed Elizabeth Hermis to act as secretary and take minutes of the meeting. We had 24 members at the meeting who enjoyed fried chicken and all the trimmings for lunch.

Correspondence was read by Mary Ann Kieschnick. We had thank you letters from Texas Children’s Hospital, Shriner’s Children Burn Hospital in Galveston, and from Interfaith Ministries who handles the Meals on Wheels program. The thank you letter for Operation Interdependence was read. They used the $2,000 donation to pay for postage for mailing goodie boxes to our servicemen and servicewomen overseas.

Keith recognized Emil Kutra who had correspondence on the Wounded Warriors group concerning distribution of donations to the group. It has been determined that 60 percent of donations goes for 500 officers and employees’ expenses and only 40 percent to the wounded warriors. Emil made the motion that we eliminate them from our donation list. It was seconded and carried.

The financial secretary/treasurer’s report was given by Mary Ann Kieschnick.

The youth club report was given by

Catherine Manchack. We had two members present for the January meeting. In March, the statewide youth program will collect bags of rice and beans to be weighed and donated to their local food banks.

Keith turned the podium over to Dennis Hermis. Keith made the motion that all adults as well as youth who bring a bag of rice or beans will get an extra $10 door prize. Motion died for lack of second. Motion was then made and seconded to make a $250 donation to the food bank. Motion carried.

Catherine asked how to give the youth club credit for poundage from the cash donation. Catherine was told to check with the food bank on how to determine poundage at their buying power.

The sick committee reported that Mary Wunderlich was in the hospital.

Carol LaPaglia went home from the hospital. Mary Jane Hue was one night in the hospital, but is with us today and is looking good. We had one new member – Franck Excoffier. Motion was made, seconded, and carried to accept him as a new lodge member. We had two terminations due to their certificate terms expiring.

FAC Pat Schleider reported. We had seven people attend the awards banquet in January – Catherine and Jack Manchack, Bob and Pat Schleider, Kerry Herrington and his wife, and Mary Ann Kieschnick. We received a plaque and lodge incentive checks totaling $1,949.19. Mary Ann received a nice award certificate and medal for being our fraternalist of the year. The statewide bowling tournament held February 13 was attended by Walter Roslier, Keith Kieschnick, and Bob and Pat Schleider. Our Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek bowled with us again this year.

Sales Agent Kerry Herrington gave a short report about his background. He has three more new members currently in underwriting that hopefully will be issued by our next meeting. Mary Ann mention that Kerry received an award at the awards banquet for being a Million Dollar Producer.

Old Business Mary Ann Kieschnick reported that we had nine deaths in 2015. A donation will be mailed to the scholarship fund.

The only additional change in our meeting dates will be for the October meeting, which will be October 16.

Pat Schleider stated that the celebration for our 50- and 75-year members will be at the May 1 meeting. We will serve steaks, baked potatoes, salad, and cake. Mary Ann will send out the invi-

tations on April 1.

Catherine Manchack thanked Dennis Hermis for seeing to the purchase of the microphones and speakers.

President Kieschnick spoke on the SPJST Education and Nature Center (ENC) camp. The Supreme Lodge is currently negotiating to purchase of the land from the LCRA. Keith asked if the membership was still interested in the pursuit of the softball fields. Emil Kutra made a motion to continue the pursuit. Keith seconded the motion.

Voting in favor were 22 members; two voted against the motion.

Birthday for February was Jack Dowling age 86 on February 7. No wedding anniversaries were observed in February.

Karley Kieschnick asked for a donation for the 5K walk for St. Rose of Lima school - Houston Galveston arch diocese. Mary Jane Hue asked what we contributed last year. Emil Kutra made the motion to contribute $500. Mary Jane seconded the motion. Motion carried.

Pat Schleider made a motion for a $20 door prize in memory of Rita Hermis and Rosie Tumis for Valentine’s Day. Motion seconded and carried.

Ladies Circle of Lodge 92 Fort Worth

The January meeting of the Ladies Circle of Lodge 92, Fort Worth was on Tuesday, January 12, 2016, with 49 present including visitors and men.

Theresa Clay’s granddaughter Amanda was visiting before heading back to school, and Linda Palmer came as a visitor and left with a membership. We were happy to have the two of them join us.

President Cathy Simmank led the group in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and Vice President Theretta Praslicka read “Take Time to Live” as she has done each year for a very long time. Business proceeded as usual with Sunshine Chairman Marlene Bass reporting on our missing members. We ask that you let one of us know if you are under the weather and in need of prayers, cards, and/or phone calls.

As I was putting together the notes of the January Ladies Circle meeting, something hit me that I never realized before. Our members really outdid themselves in 2015. They are small, but

do mighty work. They really make a difference in the community. The focus of the meeting this month centered around our service work, past and future. Most often we make cash donations in January instead of at the end of the year. We voted to donate money to SPJST Lodge 92, Fort Worth in the amount of $500; Meals on Wheels will receive $250; and Safe Haven for Women will receive $250. Gloria Farek, who passed away last January, was a collector of items that she donated to various non-profit organizations. We decided to carry on her legacy after her passing and continue collecting items for her favorite charities. We call these Gloria’s Gifts. This past year, there were 237 points for Labels for Education, 126 Coca-Cola bottle caps delivered to St. Andrews School, 320 Box Tops for Education for Our Lady of Victory Catholic School, and 10 gallons of can tabs for St. Jude’s Children's Hospital and Cancer Research. St. Jude’s no longer accepts the can tabs and suggested that they be donated to Ronald McDonald House. So that is where they will now go. We also collected over 99 pounds of food for Tarrant Area Food Bank and enough school supplies that took two trips to get them to Castleberry Elementary. Once again, I personally did not realize how active we are and how much was accomplished. On top of just being glad to see each other each month, these efforts are just awesome.

In 2016, we will continue collecting Gloria’s Gifts, as well as start accumulating “Pennies for Education” for SPJST. And come next January, we will decide who we can help again in some way.

Birthday celebrants were recog-

nized, sung to, and asked to tell a little about themselves. Most everyone got really bashful when the microphone was put in front of them, said very little, and were so shy. They are so funny: it’s only a microphone. Also for those unable to be there, we send our birthday wishes to you. Hope you had a very happy birthday.

Door prizes were given out, after which Vice President Theretta read a cute story off of her phone. She closed the meeting with a prayer for lunch, and the meeting adjourned. Bingo followed lunch.

Announcements Hostesses for February announced that the theme for February will be valentines. So come in your pink, red or white, hearts, polka dots, or cupids.

We encourage everyone to attend because who knows, you might be our Sweetheart for the Day. Jeanette Tesar gave information on Lodge 92, Fort Worth’s upcoming activities, and Lisa Juran announced that Garland Ellsworth was named Lodge 92 Fraternalist of the Year. He, along with others from lodges across the state will be honored at a banquet at the end of January. He is in the running for State Fraternalist of the Year, and we personally think he’s the best. We are so proud for him; he is totally deserving.

In closing, we had a productive meeting in January, and a very good start to the new year. See you next month.

Zika Virus

The article is reprinted with permission from author Wizzie Brown, who is Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service Program Specialist.

Zika virus is transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, and there is no specific treatment or vaccine currently available. The best way to avoid getting the virus is to avoid being bitten by infected mosquitoes. About 20 percent of people with Zika virus actually get ill. Severe disease, requiring hospitalization, is uncommon and death due to the virus is rare.

The incubation period of Zika virus is thought to be a few days to a week, but is still unknown. Symptoms include fever, skin rash, conjunctivitis, muscle and joint pain, and headache.

Symptoms tend to be mild and last from two to seven days. Zika virus can be contracted through the bite of an infected mosquito, through blood transfusions, through sexual contact, and from mother to child during pregnancy.

The mosquitoes that are able to transmit Zika virus are also able to transmit dengue and Chikungunya viruses. These mosquitoes are daytime biters, but can also bite at night. Aedes mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing

water - buckets, tires, tree holes, animal water dishes, etc.

To protect yourself from mosquito bites, wear light-colored clothing that covers as much skin as possible, use insect repellent (read and follow label instructions), use screening on doors and windows, use mosquito netting (if needed) while sleeping, and reduce standing water areas.

Repellent should only be applied to clothing and exposed skin. Do not apply it underneath clothing. If you want to apply repellent to your face, spray your hands with repellent and rub it onto your face. Do not spray repel-

lent directly into your face or near eyes or mouth. Make sure to apply repellent outdoors. Do not allow children to handle repellents. Wash hands before eating, smoking or using the restroom.

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends using a product registered with the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) containing one of the following active ingredients: DEET, picaridin, IR3535 and some of the products containing oil of lemon eucalyptus.

Many things can help to reduce mosquito problems around the home.

Eliminate all sources of standing water.

Containers such as watering cans, buckets and bottles can turn into mosquito breeding grounds. Water should be drained from birdbaths, rain barrels, gutters, flowerpots and pet dishes at least once a week. Children’s wading pools should be emptied of water at least once a week and stored indoors when not in use. Tree holes should be filled in with sand or mortar, or drained after each rain. Leaky faucets and pipes located outside should be repaired.

Areas that cannot be drained, such as ponds, can be stocked with mosquito fish that eat mosquito larvae. Dunks

can also be used in these areas. Dunks are a small, donut-shaped product that contains Bacillus thuringiensis israeliensis. The donut disrupts the life cycle of the mosquito and is non-toxic to humans, amphibians and fish.

Dunks are not for use in drinking water sources.

Resolution of Sympathy

We, the Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge 17, Novy Tabor, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed lodge sister, OLGA PROVAZEK. Funeral service for Olga Marie (Paul) Provazek, age 100, of Caldwell, Texas, was held on Wednesday, January 27, 2016, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Caldwell. Interment followed at New Tabor Cemetery.

Visitation was Olga Provazek held from 5 to 7 p.m., on Tuesday, January 26 at Strickland Funeral Home in Caldwell with a rosary at 7 p.m. Mrs. Provazek died peacefully on Saturday, January 23 in Caldwell.

Olga was born May 4, 1915, in Burleson County, the daughter of Joe and Amelia (Orsag) Paul. She married Richard Provazek on January 15, 1948.

Olga will be remembered for her strong faith and love for God, and her love and compassion for people and caring for many throughout her life, always thinking of others before herself. She loved animals, flowers, gardening, canning, baking, cooking, and sharing her many talents with family, friends, and neighbors.

Olga was a member of SPJST Lodge 17, Novy Tabor.

Olga was preceded in death by her parents; husband Richard; brother Joe Paul; sisters and brothers-in-law, Frances and Edward Horcica, Vlasta and Albert Marburger, Bernice and Walter Surovik, Pauline and Charles Dobrovolny, and Julie and Jim Bayer; brother-in-law Al Provazek; and infant sisters Adele, Rosalie, and Clara.

Survivors include sister Ella Provazek of Bryan; sisters-in-law Evelyn Paul of Rockdale and Tracy Brinkman of Brenham; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

Pallbearers were David and Tim Provazek, Earl Hamilton, Scott Dobrovolny, Don and Jimmy Bayer, Walt Surovik, and Hubert Horcica. Honorary pallbearers were Arnold Tydlacka, James Krenek, Daniel Horcica,

and Charles Looney.

Expression of Sympathy

We, the members of SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of FRANK ZABOJNIK, age 89, who passed away with his family by his side Monday, February 22, 2016, at his home in Ennis. He was born on December 3, 1926, in Alma, Texas, to Louis and Mary (Valek) Zabojnik.

He served in World War II as a Merchant Marine from 1944 to 1948. He married the love of his life Georgie (Doleza- Frank Zabojnik lik) on April 17, 1948, in Ennis at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church where they have been members ever since.

He loved working with his hands doing carpentry, farming and rebuilding and restoring old tractors. He was an avid deer hunter and crappie fisherman.

He was a member of SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis. He was also a member of KJT 35, and Sokol of Ennis.

Left to cherish his memories are his wife Georgie Zabojnik of Ennis; daughters Debbie Vitovsky and husband Tony of Ennis, Kari Henderson and husband Ricky of Blooming Grove, and Amy Hutyra and husband Matt of Ennis; grandchildren Anne Ludwig and husband Chris, Sara Vitovsky, Matthew Dixon, Nicklas

In Memory of Daniel W. Jansa

Daniel Wayne Jansa, age 71, went to be with his Lord early Friday morning, January 22, 2016, after a 15month battle with pancreatic cancer.

A rosary was held at St. Ambrose Catholic Church at 6 p.m. Sunday, January 24. Funeral mass was at 10 a.m. on Monday, January 25 also at St. Ambrose Catholic Church.

Daniel Jansa Daniel was born on August 4, 1944, to Charlie and Olga (Ripple) Jansa in Rowena, Texas. He grew up on a cotton farm east of Lowake.

Daniel graduated high school in 1962 from St. Joseph Catholic School in Rowena. He then worked as a carpenter, helped his father farm, and proudly served his country in the National Guard, 49th Armored Division Company D. He married the love of his life, LaRita Fischer of Olfen on September

16, 1967, and they started out their marriage in Fort Worth while he worked for General Dynamics. After a year in Fort Worth, one of his dreams became a reality when he and LaRita had a chance to move back to the Olfen area to pursue his love of farming. Soon they started a family and were blessed with two daughters and one son. In 1976, they welcomed a new opportunity and moved to Wall to farm, where he still farmed up until his recent illness.

Daniel was an active member of the Wall community. He loved going to church at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, singing in the Men’s Choir and volunteering at the Fall Festival.

He also liked spending time with his ‘coffee buddies’ at the Wall Co-op Gin. All problems, big or small, could be solved at the Wall Co-op morning coffee hour. If he could find someone to talk Czech to while at the Co-op, it was even better.

He was a member of SPJST Lodge 160, San Angelo. He was also a member of Knights of Columbus since 1963 where he had the honor of being Knight of the Year in 1978, a past Grand Knight, and a third degree Knight. Daniel served on the Texas Farm Bureau Board of Directors for Tom Green County for over 30 years, and during those years, he volunteered for various duties, but the one he loved the most was being the main cook for the summer customer appreciation BBQ dinner. Daniel received numerous awards from Wall FFA and Wall Young Farmers throughout his farming career. He was also a devoted supporter of Wall ISD, Wall FFA, Wall Band Boosters, Wall Volunteer Fire Department, and Garden City ISD. He showed his love for his community through his outstanding effort to volunteer and his willingness to always help his fellow neighbor.

Daniel had several passions outside of farming and his community service.

The main one started as a child with his love of the hunting. His best times were spent with his friends and family hunting and fishing. It did not matter the season; he enjoyed it all.

During his time in the National Guard, Daniel developed a real passion for cooking. This love grew from countless hours of volunteering to barbecue for numerous weddings and charities at St. Ambrose to a catering business he ran on the side for the past 15 years.

The enjoyment that he received from patron’s compliments and praise cannot be measured.

Daniel was preceded in death by his parents Charlie and Olga Jansa; infant

sister Patricia Jansa; in-laws Daniel and Anna Fischer, Sr.; brothers-in-law Harvey Fischer, Francis Fischer, and Ivan Fischer; sisters-in-law Peggy Fischer, Marcella Zly, and Arlene Gunyon.

Daniel is survived by his loving wife of 48 years LaRita Jansa; children Danielle Halfmann and husband Darrell, Marcie Holtman and husband Curtis and Norman Jansa and Dan Hogan; seven grandchildren Laura Batla and husband Keith, Shanna, Kamie and Derek Halfmann and Mark, Caroline and Katelynn Holtman. He is also survived by his sister and brother-in-law Noemi and Ralph Hoelscher and their children Carla (Curtis) Schwartz and Brian (Chrystal) Hoelscher; brothers-in-law Daniel Fischer and wife Harriet, Edwin Zly and wife Eldoris; sister-in-laws Carrol Fischer and Barbara Fischer; and numerous Fischer family nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Allen Weishuhn, Monroe Dierschke, Jr., James and Rodney Ripple, Llano Heathcott, and Jerry Multer. Honorary pallbearers were Dwane Hoelscher, Tommy Ayers, and the St. Ambrose Men's Choir.

In Memory of Lloyd L. Baker, Jr.

Services for Lloyd L. Baker, Jr., age 59, of Enid, Oklahoma, were held on Saturday morning, Saturday, February 27, 2016 at 11 a.m. in Stittsworth Memory Chapel with Deacon Tony Crispo officiating. His ashes will be in the Mausoleum at Calvary Hill in Dallas in the family crypt.

Lloyd was born on March 15, 1956, in Dallas, the son of Lloyd, Sr. and Bessie A. Horak Baker, and passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 21 at his residence.

He was raised and educated in Dallas. He attended St. Monica school for four years, and graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School with the class of 1975. He worked as a truck driver for many years and was affiliated with St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church as well as St. Gregory’s.

He was a member of SPJST Lodge 84, Dallas where he was an active member in his teen years and was crowned King along with Queen Cindy Becan of the Teenage Club.

Survivors include his mother Bessie Tydlaska of Dallas; sister Barbara and husband Kim Jones of Irving; and son Garrett Baker of Enid, Oklahoma.

Lloyd was preceded in passing by his father Lloyd, Sr.; and step-father Joe Tydlaska.

In Memory of Erwin Wind, Sr.

Erwin Leo Wind, Sr., age 96, passed away Tuesday, October 27, 2015.

Visitation and rosary for Erwin was held Friday, October 30 from 6 to 8 p.m. with a rosary recited at 6:30 p.m. at Clayton Funeral Home, Pearland, Texas.

Funeral mass took place Saturday, October 31 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Helen Catholic Church, Pearland with Father Hieu Erwin Wind, Sr. Nguyen officiating. Interment was held at St. Michael Catholic Cemetery, Weimar.

Erwin was born in Schulenburg in 1919 and was raised on his family farm. He was a patriotic veteran that proudly served his country in the United States Army Air Corp during World War II in the Aleutian Islands.

Erwin owned a successful electrical business for more than 40 years and instilled his strong work ethic and determination in his children. He was strong in his faith and devoted to his family. He loved the outdoors, spending time with his family on his farm in Muldoon, hunting and fishing.

Erwin was an avid reader and enjoyed history. He was considered the family historian and loved sharing stories of growing up with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Erwin maintained good health for most of his life and cultivated many friendships

Erwin was a member of SPJST Lodge 88, Houston.

He was preceded in death by his parents Bernard and Rosa Wind; first wife Leona Till Wind; brothers Henry, I.B., Bill, Clement, and Herman; and sisters Mollie, Margaret, and Anne.

Erwin is survived by his loving wife of 14 years Ethel Wind; step-children - sons Charles Wind, Erwin Wind, Jr. and wife Susan, Harlon and Kirk Wind; daughters Melinda Caperton and husband Charlie, and Nerissa Korenek and husband Ken; grandchildren Greg, Stephanie, Troy, Dustin, Jason, Jody, and Kristi; great-grandchildren Tyler, Dylan, Brooklyn, Blayne, and Preston; and a host of other family and friends.

He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

SPJST Lodge 202, Jourdanton officers and members extent heartfelt sympathy to the family and friends of ISABEL MARIE VENTRCEK. Our beloved mother, Isabel Ploch Ventrcek, age 95, went to be the Lord on Tuesday, February 16, 2016.

Visitation was held at Hurley Funeral Home in Pleasanton at 10 a.m. with a rosary recited at 11 a.m., Friday, February 19. Interment followed in Jourdanton City Isabel Ventrcek Cemetery in Jourdanton.

She was born in San Antonio on June 14, 1920, to Louis Ploch and Millie (Deptawa) Ploch Sutton.

Isabel worked at Mercy Hospital in Jourdanton for over 25 years. She loved to cook, and was known for her kolaches, cinnamon rolls, and pigs-ina-blanket.

She was a member of SPJST Lodge 202, Jourdanton.

She is survived by son Willie Ventrcek (Martha); twin daughters Betty Chain and Patsy Schreiber (Albert);

four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren.

Isabel was preceded in death by husband Willie Ventrcek; brother Gene Ploch; and grandson Greg Chain.

The family has asked that donations be made to the charity of one’s choice.

We, the members of SPJST Lodge 66, Waco, wish to express our deepest and sincerest sympathy to the family of our departed sister, IRENE GLATTER MUELLER. Irene Glatter Mueller, age 91, of Elm Mott, Texas, passed away early Monday morning, February 29, 2016, at West Rest Haven in West.

Rosary was recited at 6 p.m., Thursday, March 3 at Aderhold Funeral Home Chapel; visitation followed until 8 p.m. Mass of Irene Mueller Christian burial was celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 4 at St. Martin Catholic Church in Tours with Monsignor Isidore Rozycki as celebrant. Burial followed at St. Martin Cemetery.

Irene was born December 28, 1924, in Tours, the daughter of Mike and Magdalen Hoelscher Glatter. She attended the old Leggett School and Tours School. On September 26, 1964, she was united in marriage to Charlie A. Mueller in Axtell. Charlie preceded Irene in death on April 9, 1998.

In early 1954 before meeting Charlie, Irene became owner of The Lone Star Travern. After marrying Charlie, they became the original owners of the famous Lone Star Steakhouse near Waco for over 30 years. She also worked for the Bluebonnet Bomb Plant in McGregor during the war, Waco Glass Plant, Southwestern Bell Telephone Company, and JM Wood Manufacturing in Waco.

Irene was a passionate dancer. She enjoyed cooking and loved to host parties. She also enjoyed collecting figurines, watching Wheel of Fortune and her pets - especially her cat Mitzi.

Irene was a member of SPJST Lodge 66, Waco. She was also a member of St. Martin Catholic Church in Tours, RVOS Lodge 109, VFW Post No. 2148, Ladies Auxiliary in Waco, Waco Centex Bosha Veterans Organization, Auxiliary member of China Burma India, where she served as Historian for 22 years, and a lifetime member of the Sons of Hermann Insurance.

Irene was also preceded in death by her parents; brothers Michael Glatter, Jr. and Anton Glatter; sister Leona Weinberger; stepson Robert C. Mueller; brother-in-law Raymond Weinberger; and sister-in-law Doris Glatter.

Survivors include stepson Wayne Mueller; sister Evelyn Gauer and husband Herman; sister-in-law Evelyn Kettler; four step-grandchildren; several step-great-grandchildren; four nieces; five nephews; and many other relatives and friends including Jessie Pafford.

Pallbearers were Cole and Boonie Witt, Derrick Hurtt, Michael and Steve Weinberger, Todd Rorie, Gerald Glatter, and Cory Mueller.

Memorials may be made to St. Martin Catholic Church; West Volunteer Ambulance Association; or Fuzzy Friends.

We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton, and on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincere and heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed member, DANIEL HERMAN WILEY. Funeral service for Mr. Wiley, age 87, of Temple, Texas, was held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 4, 2016, at Earthman Funeral D i r e c t o r s Resthaven Chapel in Houston. Visitation was from 5 to 7 p.m. WednesDaniel Wiley day, March 2 at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home in Temple and 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 3 at the chapel in Houston.

Mr. Wiley died Monday, February 29 at a Temple hospital. He was born January 18, 1929, in Houston to Dan Henry and Matilda Grothe Wiley. He graduated from Reagan High School.

He received an associate degree in electrical technology from San Jacinto College. He married Helen Seidl on March 18, 1949. He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. He worked as a draftsman and electrical engineer for Exxon. He moved to Rockdale in 1978 then to Temple in 1980. He owned and operated Western Auto; Good Year Store; and Wiley Custom Homes.

He was a member of SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton. He was also a member of St. Luke Catholic Church; American Legion; and Oak Forest Masonic Lodge in Houston.

Survivors include his wife of Temple; daughter Danean Myers of Kansas City, Missouri; and a grandchild.

May our departed brother rest in peace.

State Youth Director shares March updates

Dear Youth Leaders, On January 31, District Youth Counselors and Assistants met for their spring meeting at the SPJST Home Office in Temple. I am happy to report that we confirmed all district camp dates and made changes to the SPJST Youth Handbook. We completed all new business on the agenda.

The Fall DYC meeting is scheduled for September 24 and 25 and will be hosted by District Three.

Congratulations to all of the winners in the Let The Good Times Roll incentive program! I enjoyed visiting with many of our members at the SPJST awards presentation and banquet held January 30 in Temple and was happy to see the winning youth clubs receive checks.

Now, let’s focus on the SPJST’s Seeking the Treasures of SPJST membership drive! I hope to see each and every youth leader come up to the front of the auditorium and accept an award on behalf of their youth club as well as themselves. Keep on encouraging your youth members to bring their friends to the meetings. Try and keep things fresh and if you do not have a membership drive planned for 2016, please start thinking about what you can do to invite new members and existing non-active members into your youth group. SPJST has a wonderfully rewarding youth program, and we should share it with everyone!

Please remind your youth members to use the referral cards for new members. All referral cards received by the

SPJST Home Office during the month will go into a drawing for three $25 WalMart gift cards. The person making the referral also benefits by helping to build a stronger and more active local lodge!

All referral cards received during the year will go into a drawing for five $100 WalMart gift cards to be awarded at the Lodge Recognition and Incentive Banquet in 2016. Please help us to ensure that the leads that your youth members pass on are quality leads. We would not want any sales representative to devote precious time to calling on unqualified leads. A good referral is someone who an SPJST member has spoken with about joining. In visiting with your prospective lead, make sure that he or she knows that an SPJST Sales Representative will call them.

This year’s Top Youth Clubs were District One - Lodge 17, New Tabor; District Two - Lodge 47, Seaton; District Three - Lodge 154, Fort Worth; District Five - Lodge 88, Houston; District Six - Lodge 30, Taiton; District Seven - Lodge 202, Jourdanton.

Each of these youth clubs received an award of $200 to be used towards a party for all youth members. If you are a member of one of these youth clubs, please be sure to post pictures of your party. The Top Youth Club is determined by which lodge issued at least five or more certificates that remain in force for 2016. So start getting the word out and grow your club. You can do it!

Thanks to Our Tee-Shirt Contest Participants This year’s contest entries came in a little slower than normal, but after we extended the deadline, we attracted 99 wonderful entries. Thanks to everyone who entered! Grand Prize Winner was Riley Green of Lodge 9, Snook who was competing in the Age 12 to 14 category. For her efforts, Riley will be receiving the grand prize - a $100 gift card and the honor of having her tee-shirt design on the official “Seeking the Treasures of SPJST” camp teeshirt.

Youth Leaders Retreat The Youth Leaders Retreat takes place Saturday, March 19 at the SPJST Home Office in Temple, Texas. Registration begins at 9:30, and the meeting will start at 10 a.m. There will be a light lunch at noon. This will be a fun and informative meeting. I look forward to spending time with you. I plan to wrap up the meeting by 4:30 p.m.

Youth leaders who are planning to stay overnight will have time to go to their hotel, Holiday Inn Express, and get ready for our banquet which will be held at Spare Time Texas. All youth leaders and their assistants are encouraged to attend. If you are planning to bring a spouse or guest, please let me know, and I will work with you on making arrangements.

We’re going to cover a lot of ground on Saturday’s program including the Seeking the Treasures of SPJST incentive program as well as the Youth Leader incentive, and we will be covering several other topics.

In addition to covering all of the regular topics such as rule book changes and camp, we’ll also be addressing any questions that you may have about the youth program. This is a fun time to learn more about the youth program and get new ideas on how to increase your membership and make your meetings more exciting.

2016 Leaders-In-Training Retreat Leaders-In-Training Retreat will be at SPJST Education and Nature Center on Thursday, June 9 through Saturday, June 11. Registration will start at 1 p.m., and camp activities will get rolling. We will be covering the duties of an LIT at camp. This will give the LITs the opportunity to acquire some great skills and help them be an important asset to their District Camps. I won’t give anything away, but I’ll tell you some great activities are being planned. LITs must attend this event in order to be eligible to assist with their district’s summer camping season. LITs will also assist their youth leaders with their youth clubs throughout the year.

Who’s eligible to be a Leader-In-Training?

LITs are active high school aged youth who have been approved by their Youth Leader and District Youth Counselor as responsible and mature enough to be an LIT. The youth club member may attend the LIT Workshop after completing an Leader-InTraining Contract. Forms will be made available through the online camp application system.

100 Pennies Scholarship Drive There’s still time for youth club members to send in donations for this year’s 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive.

Thanks to all of the youth and youth clubs who have contributed to this wonderful project. All youth who donate at least $2 will receive two merit

points. All youth who donate at least $5 will also receive a certificate. May 31 is the deadline to receive credit.

Mark Your Calendar: May 7 is Join Hands Day Our goal for 2016 is to have 50 or more lodges participate. What can your Youth Club do? Some of the great projects from past years included baking for the needy, cemetery cleanups, highway beautification, assisting veterans and senior citizens programs, conducting a variety of fix-up and refurbishing projects and fundraiser for your local volunteer fire department.

You’ve still got plenty of time to decide what you want to do in 2016. The main thing - at this point - is committing to doing something. When coming up with ideas for your project, try

to do something that will be noticed by the public. If you have any questions on this, please contact me.

Again, this year, the Supreme Lodge will offer a $100 incentive to local SPJST lodges to be used in developing and/or promoting their project. This incentive will be for lodges who partner with youth in their community. To receive the $100 incentive, lodges must register the event with the Home Office prior to Join Hands Day. The Supreme Lodge will then forward a check to the lodges who have registered.

to be held Saturday, May 7 at SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton Star Hall. Seaton Star Hall is located approximately seven miles east of Temple, just off Highway 53. There will be cars! And more cars! There will be Czech heritage displays, arts and crafts vendors, music and showcase entertainment.

Admission is free. Donations and proceeds generated from event underwriters as well as from the silent and live auctions, will benefit the Czech Heritage Museum in Temple, Texas and the SPJST Education and Nature Center. It is no accident that the event coincides with Join Hands Day, May 7. If your lodge or youth club is still looking for a Join Hands Day event, the 2016 SPJST Car Show and Czech Heritage Celebration could be the place for you! If you would like to reserve a booth space and donate the profit to the event. Your donation will be added to the amount that will be divided between the Czech Heritage Museum and SPJST Education and Nature Center at Cooper Farm. If your youth club would like to participate in the event and would be willing to help raise money for these two worth causes your booth fee will be waived.

Consistently, the SPJST Car Show has been one of the premier car show events in the Greater Central Texas area. I am playing baseball this year. My team’s name is the Yankees! Some of my friends from school are on my team, too. Last weekend my dad took me and my brother Jered to the batting cages to practice hitting. We hit balls going 45 and 65 miles per hour. I had a lot of fun. Go, Yankees!

It’s time to register for 2016 SPJST Summer Youth Camps! All camps will be held at SPJST Education and Nature Center (ENC), located at 2001 Ledbetter Road in Ledbetter, Texas.

The information will be stored from year to year. The registrant will need to have shot record information to complete the registration. The shot record can be entered or uploaded. The registrant

will need to list all medications including dosage, form of medication, and frequency.

If the application is not 100 percent completed, a reminder to complete the application will be emailed. The application can be filled out on a smart phone, computer, or tablet. If anything changes prior to camp, you may make changes to the application, but you will need to let your DYC know.

LITs will need to fill out a separate release form in order to participate in BubbleBall. The release forms will be mailed to the youth leaders.

Frankie was a great District Two Counselor from 1971-1988. He loved the youth and stayed active bringing joy in teaching Czech songs to the youth at camp. Please support the auction.

There will be a wonderful benefit to our youth which will continue in years to come.

The youth will keep entertained during the meeting by filling Easter eggs for the hunt following the meeting. Be certain to bring your Easter baskets.

Beyersville will be taking your picture with the Easter Bunny.

As you know, the youth program is working on a statewide service project.

Beans and rice are being collected to donate to local food pantries. As you may know, the price of beans and rice is very minimal. We challenge each youth and adult to bring your donation of these items to the spring meeting.

Those contributing will have their name placed in a drawing. How many pounds can we collect . . . . 25, 50, 100, or more? Come on District Two . . . let’s help feed those who are in need.

Youth members who are interested

in serving as a District Two flag bearer, please let me know as soon as possible.

You will be asked to participate at District YAD and the fall and spring meetings.

This is my last year as a youth club member, and it is bittersweet. I have made so many memories with my youth club and have made many friends from all over the state. I’m going to make this the best year and go out with a boom!

Dear Members, I love playing basketball. My team, the Rebels, played our last game of the season yesterday. We had a good season but lost in the playoffs to the number one team in the league. My friend

District Two youth enjoy annual skating party

District Two youth members and friends enjoyed an awesome skating party on Saturday, February 20, 2016, at Wheels Family Skating Center in Temple. There were approximately 100 in attendance with 70 who enjoyed the evening of skating. Everyone enjoyed the delicious pizza and drinks served by Wheels management and employees.

Thank you to Wheels Skating for the great time they always provide for us.

Of course, most activities in District Two are not complete without door prizes. Five dollar bills, boxes of candy, and stuffed animals seemed to come just come out of nowhere. Everyone received a door prize. Everyone who attends our district outings, and especially the skating party, know that all our youth are winners. Yes, that famous one dollar bill was given out to each youth as they left.

It was great to see everyone again.

It had been a while since we were all together as a district, and we are looking forward to all the upcoming activities.

LIT workshop, camp, and YAD are just around the corner.

Dear District Three Youth Past and Present, You are invited and encouraged to share memories of the late District Three Youth Counselor Bessie Petr for a special tribute in the Vestnik. Sister Bessie served as Lodge 84, Dallas Youth Leader and District Three Youth Counselor for many years and touched the lives of many generations of SPJST members. Sister Bessie passed away on February 12, 2016.

Lodge 88, Houston Youth Club invites all to March 19 Easter egg hunt

Dear Members, Lodge 88, Houston Youth Club invites you and your guests to the annual Easter party on Saturday, March 19, 2016, from 2 to 4 p.m. We will have various age groups including the adults who would like to hunt. There will be prizes, a drawing, lots of colored, hard

boiled, and plastic-filled eggs, food, and a visit from the Easter Bunny.

Please come and join us. This event is free of charge!

We are also collecting rice and beans for a statewide charity project. If you would like to donate to it, we would really appreciate it. All food collected will go to the food bank.

Lodge 84, Dallas Youth Deliver Valentine Greetings to St. Joseph’s Home

Dear Members, The youth of Lodge 84, Dallas met at St. Joseph’s Nursing Home on Sunday, February 21, 2016, to conduct our annual valentine visit. Each youth recited a poem, and a bouquet of roses was presented to the sister superior.

After we finished, we went to the local Wendy’s

restaurant where we conducted our monthly meeting while enjoying a social. We also collected our rice and bean donations for the state food drive. I know we had over 100 pounds!

We discussed old and new business; most importantly, Youth Achievement Day (YAD) which will be held Saturday, June 25!

Lodge 88, Houston Youth Share Valentines with Heritage Senior Living Residents

We went to the Heritage Senior Living in Tomball a few weeks ago. We visited with the people, made valentine crafts, and decorated cupcakes to eat. I had a lot of fun with the elderly people. I got to visit with

one of our lodge members, Mr. Sydney Jurchak. He was very nice and happy to see us. He gave Ms. Melanie a hug and a big smile. I would enjoy going back to the Heritage Senior Living again to see the

people because they are very nice.

Výroční schůze CEFT v roce 2016 a úmrtí pokladníka Antona Pustějovského Jan Vaculík

Naše Česká vzdělávací nadace státu Texasu ztratila nešťastnou náhodou v posledním čase dva významné pracovníky.

V minulém roce jsem se zmínil o Jimovi Bezděkovi a nyní hned v prvních dnech roku 2016 rodina přinesla zarmucuAnton A. jcí zprávu, že „Tony“ Pustějovský Anton A. Pustějovský, pokladník nadace, zemřel v pokojném spánku v městečku Sargent Beach, Tx. dne 2. ledna 2016.

Pohřební obřady byly vykonány v pohřebním ústavě bratří Taylorů v Bay

City, Tx. a dne 21. dubna 2016 bude uctěn na Texaské A a M universitě.

Anton byl narozen 20. dubna 1937 ve Westu, Tx. v rodině Adolpha F. a Christíny (Mechell) Pustějovských.

Navštěvoval základní školu v Galvestonu, Tx., Carthage, Tx. a ve Westu, Tx. Střední školu vyšel ve Westu v roce 1955, kde hrál v kapele. Tony pak studoval na Texaské A a M universitě a byl členem universtní kapely, studentského sboru kadetů, kde dosáhl dosti vysoké hodnosti. Po promoci z A a M university v roce 1959 s titulem v průmyslovém inženýrství byl poslán jako poručík do služby v americké armádě a absolvoval důstojnickou školu ve Fort Belvior ve Virginii a pak následovala aktivní služba ve Fort Campbell v Kentucky. Odešel do výslužby z aktivní služby v červnu roku 1962 jako nadporučík a pak sloužil v záloze americké armády až do srpna 1974.

Anton začal pracovat na civilním úseku života ve firmě Johnson and Johnson v Sherman, Tx., pak přešel do firmy Texas Instruments v Richardson, Tx., dále v Lasso Western Wear, Inc., Fem Form v San Antoniu, Tx., pak pracoval v LTV Corp. v Grand

Skupina pracovníků Vzdělavatelského a sdělovacího výboru (zleva doprava): John Šefčík, Amy Juřica Hinnant, Jan Vaculík,, upropstřed je Jan Beneš, studující s podporou Hlavinkova stipendia na Texaské A and M, Lynette Urbanovský, Diane Šulák Wilson, Cindy Pustějovský Belknap a Brian Vaníček, čestný konsul.

Prairie, Tx. Odešel do důchodu jako manažer v oddělení Aerospace-Missiles letecké firmy Lockheed Martin Vought Systems v roce 1999. Tony promoval s titulem bakaláře z Texaské zemědělské a mechanické university se sídlem v Commerce, Tx v roce 1968 a doktorát obdržel ze Severotexaské university v roce 1976.

Zájem Antona o texaské pobřeží začalo na začátku sedmdesátých let, kdy jeho rodina užívala dovolenou na Galvestonském a Bolívarském poloostrově. Po odchodu do důchodu Anton se přestěhoval do Sargent Beach, kde se stal členem výboru pro Matagordské pobřeží a pro adoptování úseků pobřeží pro jejich údržbu a čistotu. V tomto výboru pracoval po deset let. Tony povzbuzoval svoji rodinu k práci na pobřeží a k udržování čistoty a dvakrát ročně při očišťování pláží se rodina sešla k pojídání raků v jarních měsících.

Byl hrdý na svoje národní dědictví a snažil se jej udržet. Byl celoživotním členem České vzdělá vací nadace státu Texasu, byl členem ředitelského sboru od roku 1996 a od roku 1998 byl pokladník.Byl členem poradního výboru při Severotexaské universitě ve věci Kostohryzova stipendia české hudby a kultury. mnohými předními činiteli českého dědictví ve státě, sloužil s přáteli a kolegy na různých výborech a měl příležitost se setkat s mnohými významnými činiteli a velvyslanci z České republiky.

Tony byl pilný dělník celý svůj život. Rozuměl každé práci a ovládal všechna řemesla. Dovedl rozluštit inženýrské problémy a unikátní hračky.

Nikdy se nesetkal se cizincem, představil se s pevným stiskem ruky, ovlivnil mnohé životy a uměl dobře vyprávět. Měl nesmrtelnou lásku k Texaské A a M universitě a byl značně nervosní při pohledu na práci některých trenérů v mnohých fotbalových zápasech. Tyto poznatky sděloval svojí rodině a blízkým přátelům na zápasech. Měl rád rybaření, projížďky na plachetnici a opatřování návnad pro rybářské pruty svých děvčat a odháčkování chycených ryb. Sedával rád na vyplaveném dřevě na pobřeží a přemýšlel o životě, díval se na západ slunce a divokou zvěř, zvláště ptáčky na ostrově.

Tony byl milovaný kamarád, otec, dědeček a přítel. Na tomto světě zanechává milovanou ženu Carole Patrick, syna Marka Pustějovského s manželkou Sandie, dcery Karen Klein

Tajemník Paul Hlavinka byl odměněn za záslužnou práci vyznamenáním ve jménu zakladatelů nadace.

Místo květin pošlete příspěvek do pokladny České vzdělávací nadace státu Texasu, Texaské organisace pro adopci pláží anebo pro dobročinnou organisaci vaší volby Rodina děkuje za všechny vyjádření soustrasti a modlitby.

Přidám jen osobní vzpomínku na Tonyho, který skutečně zavedl v účetních knihách naší nadace obstojný pořádek. Z počátku jsme nevěděli, kam se peníze hýbou a nyní jsme měli velmi přehledné vyúčtování v každé schůzi a jako pokladník byl prvním příjemcem jakýchkoliv příspěvků pro nadaci. Práce účetnho potřebuje klidnou povahu a jistou rozvahu při rozdělování peněz, když se několik návrhů střetne a peněz není dost.

Osobě se mi zdálo, že v posledních schůzích by rád řekl něco užitečného k naší práci, avšak mmohdy byl přehlušen jinými řediteli a na jeho slova nedošlo. Jsem rád, že aspoň některé jeho návrhy se prosadily a nyní má jeho dcera Cindy usnadněnou práci při vedení účetních knih.

Převzala po svém otci tuto práci pro nadaci a doufám, že se v její práce osvědčí.

Výroční schůze naší České vzdělávací nadace se konala 23. ledna 2016 v Hlavní úřadovně Slovanské podporující jednoty státu Texasu po půl jedenácté hodině dopoledne. President nadace Woody Smith zahájil schůzi, přivítal všechny přítomné, složili jsme přísahu americké vlajce a republice, pro kterou stojí Poděkoval jednotě za

projevení pohostinství a poskytnutí místnosti. Zdůraznil zásluhy obou nedávno zemřelých ředitelů, Jima Bezděka za podporu naší hudby a kultury, a Tonyho Pustějovského za dobře vedené účetnictví. Na úvod naší schůze se Jan Vaculík pomodlil.

Byla oznámena smutná zpráva o úmrtí pokladníka Tonyho Pustějovského, který uvedl účetní knihy do pořádku, a jeho dcera Cindy Belknap převzala otcovu práci a úřad.

Tajemník Paul Hlavinka přečetl zápis z poslední výroční schůze v roce 2015 a byla s malými opravami přijata.

President nadace Woody Smith přečetl poslední účetní zprávu, kterou sepsala Cindy Belknap za otce. Adresa nové pokladníčky naší nadace je následující: Cindy P. Belknap, 2526 Willig Ave., Ft. Worth, TX. 76110. Cindy jistě ráda přijme další příspěvky pro práci naší nadace. Šeky vyplňte na CEFT a na spodní dolní lince připište účel příspěvku. Naše nadace je státem uznaná nevýdělečná organisace, která umožňuje, aby příspěvky byly považovány za úlevu při placení daní.

Diana Wilson sepsala přehled událostí v práci naší nadace po celý minulý rok. John Šefčík uspořádal naši webstránku a zaslouží si dík za tuto v dnešní době nutnou stránku věci. Poděkovala také za práci našeho tajemníka Paula Hlavinky a předala mu vyznamenání ve jménu zakladatelů naší nadace. Stalo se, že ve stejný den měl Paul i narozeniny a tak všechno dobře oslavil.

Předseda Sboru ředitelů Clinton Machann se zmínil ve své zprávě o činnosti nadace, vzpomněl zásluhy Jima Bezděka a Antona Pustějovského. Pak promluvil Jan Beneš, student z Masarykovy university v Brně na Moravě, který nyní využívá Hlavinkova stipendia k získání dalšího vzdělání na Texaské A

a M universitě. Dobře se mu studuje a zároveň využívá znalosti češtiny k vyučování zájemců v povodí řeky Brazos. Učí všechny generace a zdá se, že všichni studenti pilně studují češtinu.

Při jednání na výroční schůzi, všichni důležití úředníci podali zprávy o činnosti, první z nich byl president nadace Woody Smith, který poděkoval řediteli Sidney Kacířovi za záslužnou práci pro naši nadaci po desítky roků.. Pak promluvil James Sassín o práci Poradního výboru při Texaské universitě v Austinu, Tx. Oznámil, že reportáž o událostech ve Westu, Tx. se pomalu dokončuje. Práce na projektu o o texaském dialektu pokračuje a byl přejmenován na Projekt texaského českého dědictví.

Jay Lenart pochválil práci Tomáše Sovíka, který uspořádal v minulém roce velmi pěkný zájezd s uměleckým kolektivem po Texasu s Rybovou vánoční mší. Propagace naší hudby je užitečná ale i drahá věc a naši krajané by se rádi seznámili s dalšími druhy hudby ze staré vlasti. Ředitel Brian Vaníček poděkoval nadaci za možnost hostit naší výroční schůzi v budově Slovanské podporující jednoty státu Texasu a oznámil některé akce v Texasu, které souvisí s jeho úřadem presidenta jednoty a činností čestného konsula České republiky v Texasu Tímto byla členská schůze ukončena a po krátkém obědě byla zahájena schůze ředitelů nadace.

Předseda Sboru ředitelů Clinton Machann zaháji schůzi a přivítal přítomné ředitele. Okamžitě jsme se dali do probírání bodů pořadu, abychom zbytečně neprodužovali schůzi. Úředníci podali svoje zprávy na členské schůzi písemně a tak tajemník Pual Hlavinka přečetl zápis z minulé schůze v listopadu roku 2015. Po malých opravách byl zápis schválen.

Jay Lenárt poznamenal, že nadace by měla prohlédnout naše dokumenty, včetně stanov, dokla dů o spolupráci s universitami, a podrobit je odbornému posudku. Nemáme dosud žádný úřední doklad o ustanovení stipendia Jima Bezděka, rovněž by měly být tyto doklady bezpečně uloženy..

Woody Smith jako dočasný pokladník přednesl poslední účetní zprávu Tonyho Pustějovského. Diana Wilson předala opravný lístek do knihy ze symposia o češtině.

Volební výsledky byly potvrzeny a všichni ředitelé v úřadech byli zvoleni a nyní budeme mít jedinou ženu, Cindy Belknap, ve výboře.Bude se starat o peníze a účty.

Někteří ředitelé poukázali na naši novou webstránku, upravil ji John Šefčík a novými řediteli se stali Wayne Shandera a John Šefčík.

Příští schůze se bude konat 30. dubna někde v údolí řeky Brazos.

Přesné místo oznámí náš tajemník Paul Hlavinka. Rádi přivítáme na našich schůzích nové zájemce o členství, dosavadní práci jsme vykonali pořádnou a očekáváme, že i v budoucnu se nám bude dařit. Přijeďte na příští schůzi a budete srdečně vítáni.

The egg is a symbol of eternal life and future hope. Throughout history, eggs have been eaten and also decorated for gifts to celebrate the miracle of life and spiritual renewal. Traditions, evolving from the egg, have been carried on by Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, Italians, Mexicans, Finns, Hungarians, Irish, Germans, Belgians, and French, as well as by the Czechoslovaks. Many of the traditions are still observed and practiced today, especially in the villages.

Czech SpringFest set for April 3 at Lodge 88 Houston

Annual Czech SpringFest is Sunday, April 3, 2016, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at SPJST Lodge 88, Houston, located at 1435 Beall Street at 15th Street in the Heights.

Kovanda’s Czech Band will play from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Mark Halata Band will play from 3 to 6 p.m.

Guest artist Jaroslav Rod, Drator from Dubnica nad Vahom, Slovensko Republic will demonstrate the art of weaving jewelry and other art forms.
