Camp Tee-Shirt Design Contest Inspires, Motivates, Boosts Self Confidence “SPJST - Where Every Kid is a Winner.” “SPJST - The Best is Yet to Be.” “SPJST Youth - Czech Us Out!” “SPJST YOUth are the Future.”
These are a few of the themes from past SPJST Camp Tee-Shirts Design Contests. Camp tee-shirts have been around for a long time in SPJST, and in 1988, the Youth Program began the contest for youth members to create an artistic design for summer camp teeshirts. The contest is open to all active SPJST youth club members who are entering kindergarten to high school senior. This year’s theme is “SPJST Live the Adventure,” and the deadline for entering a design is January 31.
Complete details are on page 25 of this week’s Vestnik, and an entry form also appears on page 25. All youth club members are encouraged to enter. The Vestnik contacted several past grand prize winners of the SPJST Camp Tee-Shirt Design Contest and asked them questions about their experience. They shared valuable, common sense advice for today’s youth club members.
What did it mean to you to win the SPJST Camp Tee-Shirt Design Contest?
1988 Winner Darlene (Migl) Polly: What an honor it was to win the very first SPJST Camp Tee-Shirt Design Contest in 1988! I remember my prize being a disc camera and a boom box radio. I still have my tee-shirt!
1989 Winner Marlene (Migl) Satterwhite: I was thrilled! It was exciting to see my design come to life and be worn by all SPJST campers that summer and beyond! I’ve always had a passion for drawing and art. You could say winning the SPJST Camp Tee-Shirt Design Contest was a stepping stone in my career path. It boosted my confidence, encouraged me to take graphic design classes in high school, and led to a degree in Graphic Communications at the University of Houston. It’s still exciting when my work is featured in national publications and design annuals, on signage at international airports, and billboards around Houston, etc. 1996 Winner Scott Hudson: I was very grateful and content.

Dear Readers, As a prior winner of the SPJST TeeShirt Design Contest, I encourage everyone eligible to participate. Although I am no longer in the youth club, my mother and grandmother still wear the tee-shirt that I designed with pride. After the youth club, as some recall, I joined the military and deployed to Afghanistan. Currently, I am working as a heavy equipment mechanic and going to college to be a mechanical engineer. I am proud to say that I have earned straight A’s so far! Entering and winning the contest inspired me to use my imagination with artwork, college assignments, and also shows that hard work and creativity do not go unnoticed. I hope to have been able to encourage today’s youth just as I was inspired by the generation before me. “YOUth are the future.” Sincerely, Blake Ryan Lodge 25, Ennis 2003 Tee-Shirt Design Contest Winner
Happy Valentine’s Day
*Must be an active Youth Club member to apply for the Leadership Grant.
