Save the Date: Friday, March 11 Fort Hood Memorial Unveiling

Generations of Family Participate in Progressive 42 State Tournament

The future November 5, 2009, Fort Hood Memorial is seen last week on South W.S. Young Drive in Killeen. The memorial, which will honor the 13 killed and more than 30 wounded in the 2009 on-post shooting, is expected to be completed in the next month. The unveiling is set for Friday afternoon, March 11. During the ceremony, several officials are expected to be in attendance, including Texas Governor Greg Abbott, U.S. Representative Roger Williams, and U.S. Rep. John Carter. Governor Abbott is expected to award Texas Purple Heart medals to the service members who were shot or killed. The Vestnik will include ceremony details when they become available.

Domino players from across Texas gathered at the SPJST Home Office on Saturday, January 9 for the State Progressive 42 Tournament. It was more than fun and competition for these three families. Pictured are, left to right, Kim Seith and her father Milton Peterson, both of Lodge 6, Cottonwood; Nick Vahalik and his mom Annie, both of Lodge 4, Hallettsville; and Curtis Treat and his son-in-law Jason Beckendorf, both of Lodge 182, Falls County. A summary and photos appear on page 7.

SPJST SCHOLARSHIP/LEADERSHIP GRANT APPLICATION DEADLINE IS ON OR BEFORE FEBRUARY 1. See page 3 for more details.

his is only the third week of 2016 . . . and would you believe that we have already published 112 Vestnik pages of fraternal goodness! Our lodges, youth clubs, and members are doing a lot of great things for SPJST . . . and the pages of the Vestnik prove that each week! This week’s paper is another 40 pages, and I had planned and hoped to be able to get our backlog of items published. But, unfortunately, we ran out of space once again. So I must apologize to those who have submitted items that are not yet in print. I appreciate your patience. Coming to your Vestnik very soon are items from Lodge 4, Hallettsville; Lodge 48, Beyersville; Lodge 54, West; Lodge 84, Dallas; Lodge 87, Temple; Lodge 88, Houston; and Lodge 187, Round Rock. Other items include scenes from the Home Office Staff Christmas party and ugly sweater day along with the Home Office Open House and Temple Christmas Parade. Plus, we have photos from the Sokol Hall dedication in West that we will be sharing along with recognizing our longtime members. Stay tuned to the Vestnik! And, one more thing. Our 40-page Vestniks are limited to 32 full color pages. Some lodge pictures fell on black/white pages this week.

Billy Rollwitz announces candidacy for District Four Director I want to thank all the SPJST members for the support given to me as District Four Director. I am seeking re-election as District Four Director. SPJST has been an important aspect in my life. I will serve as a director to the best of my ability as I truly believe in SPJST and its future. SPJST is a great fraternal society and will continue to be such, as everyone works together for the benefit of the society. As changes may arise and have to be made for the benefit of SPJST and its growth, I will support and work with the Supreme Lodge officers, directors, and members to implement any changes that will help the society. I am a member of Lodge 49, Rowena and served as State Field Manager for five years. I now serve as District Four Director and have served for 10 and one-half years. I work closely with the District Four Fraternal Field Manager, attend all lodge meetings in my district, district meetings, and Youth Achievement Day, State Youth Achievement Day, Texas Fraternal Alliance and American Fraternal Alliance. I work with Supreme Lodge officers and directors on all business that comes before the board. I am a member of the Board of Directors of the S.PJ.ST. Rest Homes where I serve as treasurer. This position has helped me and given me an insight with handling financial matters. District Four has the majority of SPJST farm and home loans. By servicing these loans, I have gained knowledge of property and home values which is necessary in working loans. I am a lifetime resident of Rowena, Texas, and member of St. Joseph

Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus. I graduated from St. Joseph High School and served in the U.S. Army and Army Reserves from 1958 until 1963. I am a member of the American Legion where I served as Post Commander over 10 years, District Finance Officer, and Commander of the 21st District of Texas for four years. I have been self-employed in farming and ranching and now manage my own welding shop business. This has been beneficial in working with public and handling financial responsibilities, which has been a great help to me as a director. I am truly committed to SPJST and all that is represents - insuring lives and promoting fraternalism. Together with the officers, directors, and members, I will work to keep SPJST the great society it is. Therefore, I seek reelection as District Four Director. Fraternally Billy Rollwitz —SPJST—

VĚSTNÍK

Donnie Howard announces candidacy for District Seven Director Dear Members and Delegates, My name is Donnie Howard of Lodge 185, New Braunfels, and I am announcing my candidacy for the position of director for District Seven. Although I am not a lifelong member of SPJST, I got here as fast as I could and jumped in with both feet. In 2007, I signed up my children for policies, and I would follow soon upon seeing the endless opportunities that SPJST provides its members. Upon becoming a member of SPJST, I began chaperoning youth camp, which happened to be the last year at Echo Hill. I have continued to chaperone District Seven camps every year since, as well as reaching across district lines and chaperoning for District Two for the previous two years. In 2009, I was elected to the board of directors for SPJST Education and Nature Center (ENC) at Cooper Farm, where I have subsequently served on several committees. In 2012, I had the honor of being voted in as president of the board for two consecutive years. At the local lodge level, I have served on numerous committees, as well as lodge fraternal activities coordinator and have had the honor of recently being elected to my fourth term as lodge president. I have also had the humbling experience of being nominated as the lodge fraternalist of the year on two separate occasions. I am a 1986 graduate of University High School in Waco, Texas. The summer of 1985, prior to my senior year, I joined the United States Navy’s delayed entry program. While in the Navy, I served as platoon leader in boot camp and again as platoon leader in A School. After reporting to the USS California, I had the opportunity to travel the world and learn a tremendous amount about life. I say I have learned a tremendous amount about life because through my travels, I have learned one thing - that I thank the Lord that I live in the best country in the world that grants me the freedom to enjoy a fabulous fraternal like SPJST and be able to serve great people in a different capacity. After my time in the Navy, I entered the business world, which culminated with a career at Xerox Corporation. During my time with Xerox, it was a crucial time in that everything was going from analog to digital and into the technology age we are in today. While at Xerox, I also worked my way into a leadership position in multiple

areas. It is with my experience during this time that I believe I can be an asset to the SPJST Home Office as they have, and continue to transition into more technology. In 2012, I was offered an early retirement package from Xerox, and after many prayers and sleepless nights, I decided to take it. This was the perfect opportunity for me to take a rather small side business and grow it into a full time limited liability company “LLC”. It is with my experience in my own company, as well as Xerox, that I believe I have developed a management and business acumen that can help get District Seven and SPJST, working along with other directors and officers, into the future. My wife April, an active, lifetime SPJST member, and I have a rather large, beautiful, blended family that consists of two children who have come through the youth program, worked as staff members at ENC, and are now adult lodge members; two teenage boys; and a four-year-old who are all members of SPJST. We are also all members of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in New Braunfels. I have always been a firm believer in “giving back” as they say, and have always been involved with the community. I have served on Little League board for 15 years, band boosters, and having coached football at Sts. Peter and Paul as well as startup softball and baseball programs at school. I am currently a board member of Texas Polka Music Museum, as well as the Goodtime Polka and Waltz Club in New Braunfels. It is with these experiences, that I believe I can go out into District Seven

and beyond to help with the growth of SPJST. If I am fortunate enough to become District Seven Director, my goal is to continue to invest in our youth club, as well as reach out to the younger adult generation of SPJST members who now have children of their own com-

ing through so that we may water the “roots” of existing lodges for a better and stronger tomorrow. Thank you for your time, thought, and consideration. Fraternally, Donnie Howard —SPJST—

50 Years of The Sound of Music

by Reverend Bob Uzzel Lodge 6, Cottonwood

2015 marked the 50th anniversary of the release of the movie The Sound of Music, which is based on the memoir of Maria von Trapp, “The Story of the Trapp Family Singers.” Set in Austria on the eve of the Anschluss (the invasion and incorporation of Austria to Nazi Germany) in March 1938, the musical tells the story of Maria, who takes a job as governess to a family of seven children while she decides whether to become a nun. She falls in love with the children, and eventually their widowed father, Cap-

tain Georg von Trapp, who is ordered to accept a commission in the German navy, but he refuses due to his opposition to the Nazis. He and Maria decide on a plan to flee Austria with the children. Details of the history of the von Trapp family were altered for the musical. The real Georg von Trapp, whose first wife died in 1922, lived with his family in a villa in Aigen, a suburb of Salzburg. He wrote to the Nonnberg Abbey in 1926, asking for a nun to help tutor his sick daughter. The Mother Abbess sent Maria. The real Maria and Georg married at the Nonnberg Abbey in 1927. This marriage resulted in three additional children. The story was altered so that Maria was governess to all of the children. The von Trapps spent some

years in Austria after Maria and the Captain married. The family left Austria after the Anschluss, going by train to Italy and then traveling on to London and the United States. To make the story more dramatic, the family is depicted as escaping over the mountains to Switzerland on foot. Many songs from the musical have become standards, such as “Edelweiss,” “My Favorite Things,” “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,” “Do-Re-Mi,” and the title song “The Sound of Music.” On November 16, 1959, the original

Broadway production, starring Mary Martin and Theodore Bikel, opened. It won five Tony Awards, including Best Musical, out of nine nominations. On May 18, 1961, the original London production opened at the Palace Theatre. On March 2, 1965, 20th Century Fox released a film adaption of The Sound of Music, starring Julie Andrews as Maria Rainer and Christopher Plummer as Captain Georg von Trapp. The film was a major commercial success, becoming the num-

Mildred Holeman inducted into Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame

SPJST Lodge 88, Houston member Mildred Holeman, Class of 1943, was inducted into the Carthage ISD Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame on October 23, 2015, at Texas Country Music Hall in Carthage, Texas, which coincidentally is situated on the same lot Mildred lived during the first two years of her high school days. Mildred worked her way from Smart’s Bottom Community through Carthage schools with many side jobs, to building a successful real estate and insurance business. Classes at South Texas School of Law led her to a 33year legal secretary’s career with L.A. Kucera, the Attorney and Chairman of

the Board of Liberty Savings Association. Mr. Kucera’s practice focused on real estate and probate matters and it was during those years, she learned banking, finance, and politics. Upon Mr. Kucera’s death in 1987, Mildred opened her business and spent many years continuing to help his clients and their families. It was through her employment with Mr. Kucera that Mildred became acquainted with the Czech culture, having been signed into SPJST membership by Lillian Cruse with whom she walked every morning from the parking lot to her office. She became active in Lodge 88, Houston, having served as president, vice president, secretary, and chairman of the board for three years. Currently, she is serving on the board of directors for the Czech Heritage Museum Genealogy Center and is District Five’s representative on the SPJST By-Law Committee. She openly acknowledges that her successes in life were greatly enhanced by her association with the Czech community.

Early on in her career, Mildred became involved in legal secretary associations. She served as president of the Houston Association, the Texas Association, and as secretary of the International Association, all of which entailed worldwide travel including teaching a seminar to secretaries in St. Petersburg, Russia. One of the endorsements from a classmate to the Selection Committee for her award had this quote: “I feel that Mildred’s story is a ‘rags to riches’ Horatio Alger story of a poor young girl who had to help work her way even through high school and has gone on to achieve outstanding success in several areas of a distinguished career. Through it all, she has maintained her humble nature.”

In her life story, and her speech to the 2016 Carthage Senior Class, Mildred’s quote in part: “Reflecting back on all this means I cannot stop this story without profess-

23

ing and witnessing the goodness of God in my life. I know that God has held me in the palm of his hand since my birth. He has been gracious to me at all times, whether I was accepting secondhand clothes in Carthage, or washing the school cafeteria’s towels at home waiting for them to dry on the wood heater overnight to take back to school in return for a free lunch (I generated my own food stamp program). When I was young, l was ashamed of it. Today, I am grateful. I am grateful that God has allowed me to live, to teach Bible classes, to be an encourager, to pray for and help the sick and needy, and to do all the things I could not have done without these wonderful people God has put in my path. No matter how many bad things befall us, we know that God is in charge and greater things await us in Heaven. In the meantime, I am having fun getting up every day, rubbing liniment on my arthritis, taking my pills, and checking the obituaries to make sure mine’s not there! God bless you and God bless America.” —SPJST—

2015 - 2016 Youth Club Member Update - Merit Points and Meeting Attendance

Second Quarter Merit Points and Meeting Attendance The totals below in the column labeled “Pts” are merit points earned in the June to November 2015 youth year. This is total merit points for the 20152016 youth year thusfar. Please see “What is the Merit Point System?” for complete information about the contest. The number in the column labeled “Mtgs” is the number of meetings each youth club member has attended from June to November 2015 youth year. Please see “What is an Active Youth Member?” below to determine number of meetings needed to participate in youth activities.

What is the Merit Point System? Youth club members earn merit points for participating in SPJST lodge, district and state activities. At the end of the youth year, points are totaled and the youth with the highest points in the youth club receive cash awards.

Contest Dates June 1, 2015 to May 31, 2016

Merit Point Contest Age Divisions Junior—Entering Kindergarten to Age 12 Teen—Age 13 to High School Senior

Rules The youth leader or assistant youth leader is responsible for keeping track of the merit points for each active member of the youth club. The points are to be sent to the State Youth Director on the Quarterly and Merit Point Reports each quarter. Youth club members are also encouraged to keep up with their points and turn them in to the youth leader on a quarterly basis. This system helps both the youth leader and the youth member keep better records of youth participation. Current, official Quarterly and Merit Point Reports, available from the State Youth Director may only be used in the Merit Point Contest. The Quarterly and Merit Point Reports sent to the State Youth Director by the youth leader will be kept on file for at least six months following the conclusion of the contest. Merit points are earned for only those activities listed under Youth Point Values. An activity can only earn points in one category on the point sheet. When in doubt about any activity earning points, contact the State Youth Director prior to the contest conclusion. Everyone will be subject to the same rules in every contest. Failure to comply with any rule shall mean immediate withdrawal.

Merit Point Awards First through fifth place awards are presented in the junior and teen divisions of each youth club. The amount of points that top winners receive in both divisions will determine where the point rankings of the first through fifth winning categories begin. First place winners will be those equal to and 20 points below the top place winner in their age division. Second Place will be 21 to 40 points below the top winner in their age division. Third place will be 41 to 60 points below the top winner in their age division. Fourth place will be 61 to 80 points below the top winner in their age division. Fifth place will be 81 to 100 points below the top winner in their age division. Awards are presented on the lodge, district, and state levels in the junior and teen merit point contests. At each District YAD, the Home Office presents first through fifth place awards to qualifying junior and teen youth club members. The junior and teen with the most points in each district also receive recognition. In the event of a tie, all who tied for first place will receive the award.* Junior and Teen Point Awards First Place $30 Second Place - $25 Third Place - $20 Fourth Place - $15 Fifth Place $10

What is an Active Youth Member? A youngster with a current SPJST insurance certificate may enter the youth program the youth year that he/she will be entering kindergarten. To be considered active, youth club member must attend a majority (seven) of the monthly meetings during the year. The youth must attend the majority of these meetings at his/her home youth club. In those instances where a lodge does not have a youth club, the youngster may attend adult lodge meetings or the meetings of another youth club. The youngster will be eligible for camp and Youth Achievement Day (YAD) after the completion of his/her kindergarten year. Active youth members must be single and not be pregnant or a parent. The age of the youth on June 1 of the current youth year will be the recognized age in the SPJST Youth Program (camp, YAD, contests, etc.). The youth year begins June 1 and ends May 31. Youth club eligibility ends when the youth graduates from high school.

Lodge 24, Cyclone Youth Leader reports on January meeting

Lodge 24, Cyclone Youth Club met on Sunday, January 10, 2016, at Flag Hall. There were 10 youth and four adults present. The camp tee-shirt contest continues, and entries will be due on January 31.

The Youth Development Workshop will be announced in the near future. Youth will need to watch for the date in the Vestnik. I handed out the President’s Volunteer Service Award packet to all youth. I explained how important it is for them to all fill it out and turn it in. The 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive is still active. May 31 is the deadline to receive credit. May 7 is Join Hands Day. We discussed some options and will try to make a decision at our next meeting.

Leaders-in-Training (LIT) camp will be held on June 9 through 11. Due to family vacations at that time, we may not have a large group from Lodge 24 participating this year. I reminded youth to keep collecting plastic lids to donate to Baylor Scott and White to help cover the cost of chemo treatments on children. I asked each of them to bring the lids to each meeting. Each youth member has been asked to go to the website http://www.americannamedaycalendar.com and see when their “name day” is. This special day is celebrated the same way birthdays are. People would receive gifts from family and friends. We will share the dates at our next meeting. Birthdays for January are Kim Evatt on the 14th, Macey Malcik on the 15th, and Kim Malcik on the 22nd. Next Meeting—February 14 Our next meeting will be at Flag Hall on Sunday, February 14 at 2 p.m. We will have a Valentine’s Day Party. Fraternally, Brenda Maddux Youth Leader —SPJST—

Lodge 202 Jourdanton youth: Where does the time go?

Where Does the Time Go? This last fall was a busy semester. I was first cast as a lead role in our fall show Dead Man’s Cell Phone, a dark comedy focusing on the life of a man who illegally traffics organs. After a successful show, I started stage managing our musical Music Man, opening in February. I was inducted into National Honors Society in October. For Halloween, I volunteered at

2016 Vestnik Project Themes

February – Name Day This is an age-old European custom that people with the same first name have one day a year given to celebrate. People celebrate it in the same way as birthdays. All the people named John receive congratulations and gifts from their family and friends. It is like having a second birthday. Do any of your members have a name day?

March – National Nutrition Month Have a Pinterest party! Ask youth to make healthy snacks that they find on Pinterest and bring them to the youth meetings for a treat to share.

April – Kraslice This would be a great time to have youth decorate eggs (kraslice). May – A National Treasure: The Star Spangled Banner This would be a good time to talk about patriotism and encourage youth to participate in the Flag Day Essay Contest.

June – Lightning Safety Consider having the youth participate in a science experiment. Please watch your May packet for a list a ideas for this project.

July – Independence Day Plan a July 4th party. Practice folding the American flag. Talk about flag etiquette. August – Czech Puppets Make sock puppets or paper sack puppets and put on your very own puppet show.

September – Germ Safety Consider practicing proper hand washing techniques. Purchase small bottles of hand sanitizer for youth club members. Possibly have a nurse come and talk about covering your cough and other germ safety techniques.

Connect to nature, no matter where you live

for urban dwellers, thousands of communities nationwide understand the need for green infrastructure, and are actively working with their state forestry agency to manage these landscapes. Beyond enjoying the trees around you, you can get involved by helping to raise awareness about the many benefits trees offer. Start a local eco-appreciation society, get involved in local street cleanups, or ask your children’s school to incorporate environmental education into the curriculum. Lastly, stay current on community forestry issues. To learn more about urban and community forestry, visit www.mytreeourforest.org. You can also consider ordering “My Tree—Our Forest” tree tags. Each recyclable, weatherproof tag informs people on the ways that trees make oxygen, keep drinking water clean, save money, make city life fun and keep streets safe. Along with your school or community group, hang the tags on local trees (be sure to check local ordinances for permission!) to remind your neighbors to take care of the environment. Then spread the word on social media using the hashtag #MyTreeOurForest. —SPJST—

tioned at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. He was honorably discharged from active duty in June 1962 as a First Lieutenant, and from the U.S. Army Reserve in August 1974. Tony began his civilian career at Johnson and Johnson in Sherman, followed by Texas Instruments in Richardson, Lasso Western Wear, Inc./Fem-Form in San Antonio then LTV Corporation in Grand Prairie. He retired from management in the Aerospace-Missiles Division of Lockheed Martin Vought Systems in 1999. Tony received a master of science degree from Texas A&M University-Commerce in 1968 and an MBA degree from University of North Texas in 1976. Tony’s passion for the coast began in the early 1970s when the family began vacationing in Galveston and Bolivar Peninsula. After retirement, Tony moved to Sargent Beach where he became active in the Matagorda County Beach Dune Committee and the Texas Adopt-A-Beach program serving as coordinator for Sargent Beach for over 10 years. Tony encouraged his family to participate in the beach cleanups, and the twice a year cleanups became family gatherings

(StatePoint) In this age of smartphones and streaming video, it is easy to forget about the world beyond our little screens. And for the 80 percent of Americans living in urban areas, the natural world can seem even more remote. But experts say it’s important to find the time to disconnect, unplug, and appreciate what nature does for you. Surprisingly, you don’t have to travel outside your town to enjoy nature or benefit from it. “Your very own neighborhood is likely home to a wide variety of trees,” says Lisa Allen, Missouri State Forester and chair of the National Association of State Foresters (NASF) urban and community forestry committee. “From your backyard to the park, trees offer residents improved quality of life and a healthier local environment.” But trees are at risk from a number of threats, such as invasive pests. So a healthy community forest doesn’t exist without proper planning, management and community investment. Fortunately

Anton A. “Tony” Pustejovsky passed away peacefully in Sargent Beach, Texas, on January 2, 2016. He was born on April 20, 1937, in the town of West to Adolph F. and Christine Mechell Pustejovsky. He attended elementary school in Galveston; Carthage; and Tony Pustejovsky West. He graduated from West High School in 1955 where he was a member of the high school band. Tony attended Texas A&M University. He was a member of the Aggie Band and the A&M Corp of Cadets rising to be a Senior Supply Officer in “C” Engineers. After graduating from A&M in 1959, with a bachelor of science degree in industrial engineering, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army and attended Officer Candidate School at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, followed by active duty sta-

with crawfish boils in the spring. Proud of his Czech heritage, Tony was devoted to fostering its preservation. He was a lifetime member of Czech Educational Foundation of Texas (CEFT), serving on the board of directors since 1996, as treasurer since 1998, and on the advisory committee to University of North Texas for the Kostohryz Residency in Czech Music and Culture. He worked with many fine Czech heritage leaders throughout the state, served with friends and colleagues on the board, and had opportunities to meet dignitaries and ambassadors of the Czech Republic. Tony was a member of SPJST Lodge 6, Cottonwood. Tony was a hard worker his entire life. He was truly a jack of all trades, master of all, engineering and crafting solutions and unique gadgets. He never met a stranger, always introduced himself with an iron grip handshake, touched many lives, and was a great storyteller. He had an undying love for Texas A&M; and even though most seasons and coaching regimes tested his patience, he enjoyed the moments he shared with his family and close friends at Aggie football games. He enjoyed fishing, rigging, and baiting his girls’ lines and unhooking their fish, sitting on his meditation log by the surf, watching the sunset, and caring for the wildlife especially the birds, along the island. Tony was a beloved companion, father, grandfather, and friend. He is survived by his longtime love of 19 years, Carole Patrick; son Mark Pustejovsky and wife Sandie; daughters Karen Klein and husband Bill, Cheryl Pustejovsky, Cindy Belknap and husband John, and Amy Rodgers and husband David; grandchildren Lauren, Jennifer, Heather, West, and Kimber; great-grandchild Dylan; sister Kay Polansky and husband Al; nephews Gary, Dale, and Alan; and Carole’s daughters Katherine, Frances, and Camille. A memorial service was held on Friday, January 15 at 3 p.m. at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home in Bay City. He will be called at the Campus Aggie Muster on April 21, 2016. “All Things Czech” returns to Czech Heritage Museum Jan. 21

The Czech Heritage Museum in Temple, in partnership with SPJST, is bringing back the popular “All Things Czech” lecture and discussion series. The next installment will be on Thursday, January 21 at the Czech Heritage Museum in Temple. The presentation will focus on current events in the Czech Republic. “I’m excited about the January program,” says Czech Heritage Museum Administrator Susan Chandler. Special guest presenters will include Pavel Kosar of Prague, John Honner of Fort Myers, Florida, and Brian Vanicek of Temple. Mr. Kosar is media specialist and the past Director of Czech Tourism, an agency of the Czech government engaged in the development of tourism in the Czech Republic. He is in the United States and Texas working on a book detailing the immigration of Czechs to the United States of America. Mr. Honner is the producer of Czech-American Internet TV. For more than 12 years, Czech American TV has been broadcasting unique, non-commercial educational programs across the USA at www.catvusa. Mr. Vanicek is President of SPJST and the Honorary Consul of the Czech Republic to the State of Texas. “A lot of our past programs in the ‘All Things Czech’ series have related to Czech history. They’ve been very well received; however, we wanted to kick off 2016 with something fresh and new. On January 21, we’re shifting the focus to current events and talking about the Czech Republic as it is today,” says Ms. Chandler. “The first part of that discussion will focus on present-day relations between the Czech Republic and the United States.”

Czech Museum to host language social hour

The Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center will host “Svacina Time!” a bi-monthly Czech language social hour beginning Tuesday, January 26, 2016. The meetings will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month at the museum, located at 119 West French Avenue in Temple, Texas. “Museum visitors kept telling me that, although Czech was their first language, they were losing it because there was no place to use it,” said Susan Chandler, museum director. “I wanted to provide a place for that.” Temple and its surrounding communities are home to one of the largest enclaves of ethnic Czechs in the United States. Most of these are the

children or grandchildren of immigrants who came from the Moravia region of the Czech Republic at the turn of the last century. “The unique Moravian dialect is endangered,” said Chandler. “It has been preserved here in Texas better than in Europe, so Czech linguists have an interest in it. I feel that our museum has a calling to preserve living culture as well as artifacts, so I wanted to create a way to do that.” The social hour will follow a structured format that changes every 15 minutes, but it is not a class and there will not be homework. “Each social time will be a stand-alone activity, so if you miss a week, you won’t have to catch up,” said Chandler. “Czechlish – any combination of Czech and English – will be encouraged. You have to start somewhere and we learn best by just plunging in and trying to communicate.” “We have a wonderful volunteer committee, led by Betty Marek and Janet Young, who will coordinate the logistics, but members will take turns bringing the subject matter to discuss,” said Chandler. “Svacina Time!” is open to all ages and anyone interested in learning or practicing the Czech language. Initially, the program will be held only in the afternoon; but if there is enough interest, an after-school or after-work program could be offered, as well, said Chandler.
