alloween means “hallowed” or “holy” evening. Like many other holidays, Halloween has descended from celebrations of ancient times.

Roots for our Halloween celebration seem to have grown out of the British Isles, and the Celts who lived there.

This was considered a magical time.

It was at this time of the year when they considered the veil between the worlds of the living and the spirit to be at its thinnest. The Irish, who believed that spirits were present on this night, lit candles, sometimes placing them in turnips, now known as Jacko’-lanterns, to keep the spirits at bay.

Not wanting to be alone on this night, the Irish initiated the custom of going from house to house, gathering food for a community feast. This is believed to be the origin of our custom of trick-or-treating.

Today, Halloween is characteristic of children dressing up in colorful costumes eating lots of not-sohealthy candy and snacks!

One of the easiest ways to remedy the scary remnants of a night of neighborhood candy collecting is to throw a Halloween party. Here are a few delicious ideas for goodies:

Witches Brew Orange juice and lemonade frozen concentrates mixed with apple juice and served hot makes a tasty and colorful witches brew.

Jack-O-Lantern Cookies 3/4 cup butter, softened 1/2 cup brown sugar 1/2 cup pumpkin-pie filling 1 egg yolk 1 teaspoon vanilla 2 1/4 cups flour 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg Pinch of salt

Preheat over to 375 degrees.

Cream together the butter and brown sugar. When the mixture is blended, add pumpkin-pie filling, egg yolk, and vanilla. Blend thoroughly and set aside. In a separate bowl, combine flour, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and salt.

Gradually add dry ingredients to wet ingredients and stir until mixed.

Place the mixture in a sealed plastic container and refrigerate for 30 minutes. Then roll out the dough to a thickness of about 1/8 inch. Cut into shapes using cookie cutters or make a giant Jack-o’-lantern-shaped cookie but using your hands. Make a Jack-o’-lantern face by pushing Sundrops or M&M’s into the uncooked dough and then bake for 10 to 15 minutes.

Spooky Honey Popcorn Balls A great project for the kids, these popcorn balls are also very good.

Wrap them in individual wax paper bags for a wonderful trick-or-treat surprise.

1/2 cup honey 1/2 cup sugar 1 Tablespoon butter 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 5 cups popped popcorn

Combine honey, sugar, and 1 tablespoon butter in pot and warm until melted together. Pour over warm popcorn; stir with wooden spoon until popcorn is thoroughly coated.

Cool until mixture can be handled.

Butter hands and shape popcorn into balls. Tip: Eat within a few hours or store lightly covered to maintain freshness.

Summary Under supervision of the Vice President and Insurance Operations Manager, assists with reaching out to members to ensure membership satisfaction, coordinate with field managers and help with overflow work for the entire insurance department.

From the Supreme Lodge President How does one qualify to serve as a delegate?” and “What is the process to be used in electing delegates to the convention?”

Dear Members, Lodge secretaries and presidents recently received correspondence from SPJST Supreme Lodge Financial Secretary Roy Vajdak and SPJST Supreme Lodge Secretary-Treasurer Leonard Mikeska regarding information relevant to the 2016 Convention. Generally stated, this information addresses the number of delegates that your lodge will be authorized to send to the convention. The package also includes credential forms that will need to be completed following the election of your delegates.

Please know that SPJST’s convention process is outlined in Article 2 through 25 of the SPJST By-Laws. The By-Laws may be accessed in their entirety via the spjst.org website.

Two of the most common questions related to the SPJST’s convention process are “How does one qualify to serve as a delegate?” and “What is the process to be used in electing delegates?” These points are addressed in Article 4 of the By-Laws. To help address these reoccurring inquiries, Article 4 is reprinted below. The section which outlines delegate qualifications is highlighted in red. The section which outlines the process for electing delegates is highlighted in blue.

ARTICLE 4. (a) The convention of the SPJST is composed of delegates elected from among active members of the local lodges. Every lodge has the right to elect a delegate on a numerical basis from its membership, according to the following scale:

1. From 20-100 members over 16 years of age, one delegate.

2. For each additional 100 members, one additional delegate if the lodge achieves its insurance goal or its members’ goal; if goal not reached, for each additional 150 members, one additional delegate.

Note: A lodge meets its insurance goal when it achieves a three year total of 15 percent increase of net premium income (excluding annuity premiums) or a 15 percent net increase of members on base year 2011 for the year of the convention and the two years following the convention.

3. A lodge attaining enough new members for an additional delegate between the annual meeting and 60 days before the convention will fill that position under the provisions of Art. 4(g)3.

Transfer of membership will not be counted as additional new members and terminations will be subtracted.

4. A lodge represented by its delegate or delegates is entitled to one vote for every active mem- ber and every member over 16 years of age belonging to the Society and local lodge at least 60 days before the convention and who has his premiums and dues paid in full. (b) A lodge chartered during the convention year may elect its delegates and substitutes any time be- fore convening of the convention. (c) A lodge chartered or merged or reorganized less than three (3) years preceding the election of its delegates may elect its delegates and their substitutes from among those members having attended a majority of the regular meetings from the date of its charter, merger or reorganization. (d) A lodge losing the required number of mem- bers between the time of the election of delegates and convention will not lose delegate or delegates due to such change. (e) Qualifications: Only that member may be elected delegate or substitute delegate who: 1. Qualifies as an active member as defined under Art. 1 of these by-laws.

2. Is present during the election or is absent due to unavoidable circumstances.

3. Attended a majority of the regular meetings during the three years preceding the convention. When there is a conflict with the date of their local lodge meeting, the state youth director, district youth counselors and their assistants attending youth club meetings, state and district field representatives, and state and district fraternal activities coordinator, on official business, may count as attending a regular meeting for this purpose. When there is a conflict with the date of their local lodge meeting, Supreme Lodge members attending official functions of the Society qualify as attending a regular meeting for this purpose. Notification must be given to the local lodge secretary prior to the event with written confirmation

made by the party within two weeks following the event. New transferred members’ attendance record of the previous lodge shall be accepted.

4. Is a citizen of the United States of America at the time of election.

5. Is not an insurance agent (underwriter) selling life insurance in competition with the So- ciety.

6. Is not an officer or director of any grand lodge of another fraternal life insurance Society. (f) If a delegate is not in the convention by the second day he will not be seated unless he has a good excuse, such as serious illness, death, or emergencies which prevented him from attending. (g) Delegates and substitutes: 1. Delegates and their substitutes to the convention are elected in the annual meeting preced- ing the convention for the term from one convention to the next convention.

2. When a lodge elects delegates, the nomination and election of delegates is made by whatever procedure is deemed most convenient and expedient by the local lodge.

If a nominating committee is used, nominations from the floor must be permitted. In the election process, a secret ballot may be used. Ballots containing more nominees are void and not counted. The nominees receiving the highest number of votes are elected.

3. Not more than ten substitute delegates are elected. Such substitute shall be elected in the same manner as the delegates. If a lodge is enti- tled to an additional delegate, as provided in Art. 4(a)3, or if any one of the elected dele-

gates cannot go to the convention, for whatever reason, the sub- stitute with the highest number of votes fills the first vacancy. The same procedure is continued until all substitutes are depleted, in which case additional delegates are elected, if needed.

4. Delegates approved by the Credentials Committee and the convention, who are present and voting at the convention, shall divide all the local lodge’s votes equally among themselves. Odd vote or votes are taken by the delegate receiv- ing the largest number of votes when elected. (h) No delegate shall vote by proxy.

Each dele- gate will vote his allotted number of votes by sep- arate vote or separate ballot.

Mark These Dates on Your Calendar The 32nd SPJST Convention is scheduled to convene on Monday, June 13, 2016, at the Killeen Civic and Conference Center. Convention delegates and their guests will be invited to attend a welcome event on Sunday, June 12.

The Convention is expected to conclude on Wednesday, June 15.

This week, we’ll explore the potential for regulators to move beyond the parameters of the NAIC’s new Corporate Governance Model Act – regulations that require all insurers (not just fraternals) to disclose the details about their organization’s corporate governance structure – and actually require companies to meet specific governance standards. While there are no such proposals on the horizon, it’s not a stretch

to think that regulators won’t attempt such an expansion of their authority sometime in the foreseeable future – especially if we provide them an excuse to do so.

In fact, two states (Illinois and Ohio) have considered enacting rules that would impose stricter corporate governance standards on fraternals than on commercial insurers. These governance issues were included in broader legislative proposals that addressed fraternal solvency regulation. Both states enacted similar solvency laws, and the Illinois legislation included a section that authorizes the Department of In-

surance to establish the qualifications for fraternal CEOs that are elected by the organization’s delegates or members. This specific provision of the new Illinois law becomes effective on January 1, 2019.

Regulators’ primary concern when it comes to fraternal governance is the election of officers rather than the hiring of a CEO by an elected board of directors. Most regulators believe that the election of a CEO (and other officers) can more frequently result in the selection of a very popular, but not always qualified, individual to manage the operations of a complex financial services organization. Moreover, regulators point out that the election of other officers – vice presidents, etc. – makes those individuals more accountable to the people that elected them and less

accountable to the CEO who is charged with leading the organization. I’ll be honest, in this case I agree with the regulators.

Surprisingly (or maybe not so surprisingly), so do many leaders of Alliance member societies who still maintain the “elected CEO” corporate governance model. During the debates over the governance provisions of both the Ohio and Illinois fraternal solvency measures, member society executives suggested the Alliance may want to support stricter governance standards, including a requirement that CEOs and other executives be hired rather than elected. When asked why they would endorse a proposal that would overhaul the governance of their own societies, they said candidly that a regulatory mandate was the only way such

District Four hosts Fall Fun Day

On Saturday, October 3, 2015, District Four Fall Fun Day was hosted by District Four Officers in Abilene at Lytle Land and Cattle Company, and fun it was! The youth started the day by going to the zoo and then coming to dinner with the adults.

The day started with District Four Flag Bearers Hunter Wood and Olivia Schwertner presenting the colors and leading the pledges. President Laura Pospichal held a brief meeting as there was something that needed to be pre-

sented to the district in a timely matter.

District Youth Counselor Pam Lehman then told us about some of the things the youth have been doing, along with upcoming events.

The youth of the district also had their Christmas ornament contest. So glad I did not have to judge as we have so much talent in this district . . . they all were winners as far as I am concerned, but as in any contest there can only be one blue ribbon awarded in each age group. changes could be made. They felt that the leadership of their societies would never support such a drastic modernization of their organization’s decisionmaking process.

I admire these executives’ awareness of the need to improve their societies’ governance and their willingness to consider a regulatory mandate to accomplish that goal. But at this stage of the game – given that so many Alliance members have made such significant progress on their own to upgrade their governance – I think reliance on regulatory intervention falls into the “be careful what you wish for” category.

Once you defer to regulatory authority on the basic principle of how your society organizes itself and makes decisions, you no longer have a regulator-regulated relationship, you

That said, there’s no excuse for fraternals to reject the mountain of evidence that demonstrates the value – to the society and its current and future members – of a modernized governance structure and to make progress (even if its incremental) toward implementing such changes on their own. If we fail to do so, any future fraternal financial instability will provide regulators the reason they need to intervene more drastically and establish specific governance standards that all societies must meet.

OK, enough from me. This is a major issue for individual societies and for the Alliance as a whole.

District Seven Family Fun Day set for November 8 at Lodge 107, Floresville

Lodge 107, Floresville will host the District Seven Family Fun Day on Sunday, November 8, 2015, at the SPJST Lodge 107 Hall, 1156 FM 1303, Floresville, Texas. Registration for contests and door prizes is from 10 to 10:30 a.m. followed by a brief business meeting. Lodge 107 will provide a complimentary brunch and soft drinks throughout the day. Each lodge is asked to bring its lodge banner for display.

Lunch A sausage plate lunch will be served for $4. To order plates, members are asked to notify their lodge secretary by October 30.

Donations Lodges are asked to bring a gift ($20 value) for the prize drawing to benefit the district and a door prize ($10 value). Or, lodges may prefer to mail a $30 check payable to District Seven Treasurer Sandra Hoggard, 14 Dallari Ct., San Antonio, Texas 78216. Deadline to send check is October 30.

Lodges will be recognized at the fall fun day for their donations.

Pat is the assistant youth leader at Lodge 6, Cottonwood. She was diagnosed with a rare form of stomach cancer last May. She is taking treatments at Cancer Centers of America in Illinois. Lodge 6 Cottonwood reports on October meeting

President Milton Peterson called the meting to order on Wednesday, October 4, 2015, at 2 p.m. The youth led the Pledge of Allegiance and the SPJST motto. A moment of silence was observed for the deceased of the lodge. Sister Georgie Soukup reported 17 members present. Sister Barbara Hykel read the minutes from the last meeting. Sister Peggy Dobecka gave the treasurer’s and youth club reports.

Sister Evelyn Stuckly gave the FAC report reminding everyone of the district meeting on October 25 at Lodge 6. Sympathy cards were sent to Karen and Mike Sonnenberg and Tammy and Shelby Holder. A get well card was sent to Marshel Peterson. There were no October birthdays. The progressive door prize winners were not present.

Lodge 9, Snook welcomes new members

The October 7, 2015, meeting of SPJST Lodge 9, Snook was called to order by President Donnie Hejl at 7:05 p.m. Josef Orsak led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Minutes from the September meeting were read and approved. Hall manager, treasurer, FAC, and statewide reports were presented.

Loree Lewis gave the youth club report. The youth will participate in Make a Difference Day and will dance the beseda at Worldfest.

We welcomed guest Michelle House to the meeting. We had several new applicants – Jacobo Banda, Luz Banda, Kendra Griffin, Colton Alpha, Joey Sosa, Jr., Marissa Villarreal, and Carson Park. Motion passed to accept the new members. Welcome, new members.

The new roof is on the hall.

Lodge 15 Buckholts reports on activities

The meeting of SPJST Lodge 15, Buckholts was called to order at 5 p.m.

by President Doug Williams. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited followed by a moment of silence in memory of our departed members.

President Williams welcomed everyone and thanked them for their attendance. All officers were present except Vice President A.W. Zajicek.

President Williams spoke with Lamerle Zajicek. A.W. is still being treated at Scott and White and now is waiting results. Our prayers are certainly with them as they go through these trying times. We certainly miss them at our meetings.

Pavelka Cemetery receives funds

Treasurer Sandie Fischer gave us her report on our finances which was approved as read.

In old business, the Police Officers Appreciation Day was held on September 30 here in Buckholts. We want to thank everyone who participated by displaying blue or wearing blue.

In new business, it will be time to elect our officers for the new year at the next meeting in November so everyone plan on attending.

We are so happy to announce that our lodge now has two sales agents Mary Helen Rodriguez and Scott Brandon. Mary Helen was born and raised in Buckholts. She is taking a big interest in our SPJST and very active with the Youth Outreach Center. At the present time, she is making plans for some new activities. Scott is owner and head chef at Post Office Cafe. He has lived in the Buckholts area about 10 years. We surely need some help in seeking new members. So many of our older members are no longer with us, and the sad part is that we are not getting any new ones. Membership is really decreasing.

Mary Helen Rodriguez made the motion that we contribute to the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive. It was seconded by Virginia Williams.

Motion carried.

The 3P Cowboy Church will be having a Fun Fest for the youth on October 31 from 6 to 8 p.m. Food will be provided as well as games and prizes.

It sounds like a great time.

On November 14, Buckholts will be having a city-wide garage sale. So mark your calendar.

A delicious meal was served by the Post Office Cafe.

Several people who helped at the Mother’s Day Barbecue were unable to attend. We missed them and appreciate their help.

Birthdays included Carl Macek on the 9th; Ray Malcik on the 15th; and Melanie Zavodny Nauert and Bobby Hoelscher both on the 22nd. Wedding anniversaries included Brenda and Mark Maddux on October 24 for 23 years and Barbara and Robert Macek for 45 years.

We missed our longtime and helpful member Jerry Cabla as he is now in assisted living in Temple. The writer remembers many a dance that we needed a strong man, and Jerry was there. Most probably, Jerry helped at all the Mother’s Day Barbecues - arriving at 3 a.m. to start the fires.

Also in attendance were our member Brian Vanicek, Supreme Lodge President, and his wife Joan. We are justified in our pride of his work in this high office. We know his travels are many and look forward to his endeavors being rewarded with success.

How old is too old to be deer hunting?

Johnnie Plsek of Temple said that you will have to ask someone older than him. At nearly age 95 and a half, he gets better all the time. After hunting for 65 years, the last two years, Johnnie has killed two of the biggest bucks in Bell County - both with a crossbow. This year, Johnnie bagged a beautiful 11-point buck. Johnnie is a member of SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton.

Lodge 25, Ennis celebrates Czech Heritage Month

Dear Readers, Our lodge met on Thursday, October 8, 2015. In celebration of Czech Heritage Month, members enjoyed a meal that Betty prepared consisting of klobase, sauerkraut, and potatoes. For dessert, we had apple strudel and white cake made by Mildred Dolezal.

The meeting began with the Pledge of Allegiance. Under old business, we discussed the annual fundraiser which will be held February 27. Music will be provided by country band Lost Money and classic rock by Pontiax. A prize drawing will be held, and the big prize is a zero-turn riding lawn mower.

Betty and Margaret updated members on the strudel bake. Members are encouraged to help sell strudels. Please call either Betty 972-878-7719 or Margaret 972-878-6149 with your orders. It was also announced that it is time to select an SPJST Fraternalist of the Year. Sales agent Margaret has three pending new member sales, and Eugene is working on one new member at this time.

New business discussed included a Halloween dance which will be held Saturday, October 31. Music will be furnished by the Flashbacks, and prizes for the best costume will be given. Doors will open at 7 p.m. and cost is just $10 per person. Nominating committee will submit officer recommendations. Election of officers will be held next month. Three Fall Meeting that will be held Sunday, October 25 in Cottonwood.

It was reported that James Martinek refurbished the bar tables. Thank you, James! Joann Needham proposed to the lodge that her company, RoofTime, will donate funds and labor to remodel the bar area which is in need of expansion and upgrading. Part of the plans are to install two to three televisions for members and guests to enjoy. Members were in agreement and approved the motion made to remodel the bar area.

Jennifer Dvorak announced that her daughter April is currently in Washington, DC, representing Ennis High School at a homeland security leadership training. There she was elected president and was offered an internship related to foreign affairs. Rita announced that Paige Tignor was selected as Ennis High School Homecoming Queen. SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis is very proud of its youth!

Lawrence updated everyone on upcoming rentals. There are eight scheduled for October and two in November.

October birthdays are Gene, Betty, Sarah, Margaret Martinek, Tori, Justin, Ragan, Chad, Jessica, Dorothy, and Kathleen. Wedding anniversaries celebrated are Kathleen and Casey Blake, Tom and Allis Droste, and Amy and Bill Gurley. Congratulations to all!

Lodge 29, Taylor hosts successful barbecue cookoff

Lodge 29, Taylor met for the regular meeting on October 14, 2015.

President Ronnie Rieger called the meeting to order with the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence for our military serving the country.

All officers were present. The September minutes were read and approved. Tammy Cannon gave the treasurer’s report.

Vice President Sharon Kaderka reported that Lodge 29 will collect for the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive. Since October is Czech Heritage Month, we will have a Czech meal prepared by Jesse, Frankie, Adolph, and Leonard after the meeting. Sharon has the information for the 2016 state domino tournaments if anyone is interested in attending any of these. Lodge 48 will hold a Progressive 42 tournament on October 31.

Sharon has an order form for SPJST Christmas Cards designed by Brandon Hoelscher if any member wants to place an order. Sharon thanked Barbara Polasek, Cindy and Greg Buzan, Jeana Matetzschk, Joyce Patschke, and everyone else who helped at the cookoff.

Cristy Girod reported the youth club had a very successful silent auction during the barbecue cookoff and thanked everyone who made a donation. District Two youth went to Six Flags Over Texas. Lodge 29 had 11 in attendance. Kara and Aaron Kaderka danced the beseda at the State Fair.

On October 4, the youth club meeting was held at the Williamson County Gin where they were given a tour by Mr. Norman Johnson. It was very interesting to see how cotton is processed.

Jesse thanked everyone who worked at the barbecue cookoff. We had 81 barbecue teams this year. Jesse made the final payment for the roof loan. The next project is replacing the ceiling downstairs in the hall and repainting the downstairs.

Ronnie also thanked all the workers at the barbecue cookoff. Next month we will have officer elections.

Jesse’s term on the property committee is ending. We will also elect delegates for the 2016 Convention. Our December meeting/Christmas party will be on Sunday, December 6 beginning at 3 p.m.

Lodge 48 Beyersville plans progressive 42 tourney

SPJST Lodge 48, Beyersville will host a progressive 42 domino tournament on Saturday, October 31, 2015.

Registration fee is $10 and includes the noon meal, snacks, and prizes.

Lodge 48, Beyersville is located at 10450 FM 519 in Beyersville, Texas, which is near Taylor.

Registration begins at 8 a.m. We plan to begin playing at 9 a.m. Fifteen

games will be played with a 20-minute time limit per game. The tournament should end around 4:30 p.m.

We especially invite SPJST members, but anyone is welcome. You do not need a partner as all players will draw numbers and be seated accordingly for the first round. The two winners at each table will move up and will be split up, and each one will play with one of the losers of the previous game.

We will use the same rules that SPJST uses. Players need to pre-register so we can determine food needs.

Lodge 48 Beyersville members learn fire prevention

The meeting opened with the Pledge of Allegiance. Officers presented their reports which were accepted as read. The hall rentals were down for the month of September, but there are substantial bookings for the remainder of the year.

In new business, discussion was again directed at the annual fundraiser raffle which was held in September sharing ideas to improve the event and to better record information.

equipment and exit information that needs to be added to the hall and must to be included with hall rentals. Janet Filla has made arrangements with the Coupland Volunteer Fire Department to make a presentation at the next regularly scheduled meeting at the hall.

A motion was made and approved to donate $100 each to the Coupland and Thrall Volunteer Fire Departments.

Bobby Wuensche reminded everyone of the upcoming domino tournament at the hall on October 31.

Lodge 51, Ellinger plans Christmas party

SPJST Lodge 51, Ellinger met for its quarterly meeting on September 18, 2015, at 6:30 p.m. at Ellinger Fire Station. Eight members were present.

President Calvin Hlinsky called the meeting to order by everyone saying the Pledge of Allegiance. This was followed by a moment of silence for deceased members, those who are ill and could not attend, and our troops.

Jo Ann Divin gave her report which was approved.

The Christmas party to be held December 4 was discussed. The lodge decided that a meal of turkey and dressing will be served. Members are to bring side dishes.

Congratulations to Dan and Gloria Pavlas who celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on July 11, 2015, at St. Michael’s Family Life Center in Needville, Texas. They were joined by their five children and their families along with many other friends and relatives. Dan and Gloria were married on July 9, 1955, at the same location in St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Needville.

Lodge 66, Waco readies for anniversary luncheon

The meeting of SPJST Lodge 66, Waco was called to order by President John Engelke on Monday, October 12, 2015, at 6 p.m. at Luby’s Cafeteria with all officers present with the exception of Vice President Michael Galler. There were seven members present.

Members recited the Pledge of Allegiance and motto.

Secretary Sister Dana McAdams read the minutes of the September 15 meeting, and they were approved as read.

Sister Diana Engelke received a thank you note from the Galler family for the memorials in Debbie Galler’s memory. She also received a thank you note from Steve Randolph and Stephanie Boesche from St. Paul’s Choir thanking Lodge 66 for the $100 donation to the choir.

At the next lodge meeting on Monday, November 2, we will have election of officers, nominations for convention delegates for 2016, and for fraternalist of the year.

FAC Sister Diana Engelke read a letter from State FAC Frank Horak.

Sister Dorothy Veselka of the Entertainment Committee reported sandwiches will be served at the next lodge meeting on Monday, November 2.

Lodge 81 Needville reports on October meeting

The October 2015 meeting of SPJST Lodge 81, Needville was held on Sunday, the 18th. At 12 noon, a prayer of thanks was given by President Vincent Newman, and everyone enjoyed a meal of fried chicken provided by the lodge. Side dishes and desserts were provided by members. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Darlene Blinka and her kitchen committee for getting everything ready for us.

President Vincent Newman called the business meeting to order at 1 p.m.

Emma Kujawa led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. We had a moment of silence for departed members Lillian Fojtik and Carl Jean Stewart. We extend our sympathy to their families and friends. All officers answered the roll call except Treasurer Bradley Stavinoha and Special Funds Chairman Tom Stavinoha. Added to our sick list was Brooks Stavinoha.

Secretary Willie Mae Kuykendall read her report, and it was approved as read. Since Treasurer Bradley Stavinoha wasn’t there to present his report, Willie Mae Kuykendall read it. It was approved. Lodge 180 Burleson plans Christmas party

Lodge 180, Burleson held its monthly meeting on October 6, 2015.

The meeting was opened with the Pledge of Alliance and a moment of silence as we remembered our departed and having prayer requests.

Our PFTF ideas were discussed, and we continued to make efforts to move toward resolutions in our creative ideas. A barbecue dinner was enjoyed while we strategized in completion of these ideas.

Lodge 183 Arlington welcomes new members

The monthly meeting was held and called to order at 7:10 p.m. on Monday, October 19, 2015, at Lodge 183, located at 3100 Pleasant Valley Drive in Arlington. Roll of officers was called, and all were present. Present were President Ann Pustejovsky, Financial Secretary Kay Weeks, Fraternal Activities Coordinator Janie Rejcek, Treasurer Annette Cepak, Darlene Hollingsworth, Youth Leader Debra Daniel, and Trustees Raymond Mikeska, Pat Sill, and Tom Weeks.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Raymond Mikeska’s grandson and Cindy Boyd’s son Brandon Lyle Boyd who passed away Wednesday, October 14; Rita Mardis’ husband who passed away Saturday, October 17; and Rudy Rejcek who is in the hospital. Pray that we all stay healthy.

The Pledge of Allegiance was recited, and a prayer of silence for all those who are ill or who have recently been in the hospital.

Minutes were read from September’s meeting by Darlene Hollingsworth. There were three corrections.

District Three won third place for the scrapbook, not Lodge 183. At the District Three Fall Meeting Fun Day, there will be a Halloween contest and Christmas ornament contest. At the district fall meeting, you may bring six cans of food instead of seven. Robert Sill made a motion to approve the minutes, and Annette Cepak seconded.

Debra Daniel gave the youth club report. She stated the youth club attended the State Fair of Texas in Dallas on October 11. Debra stated the District Three Fall Meeting is scheduled Sunday, October 25 at Lodge 6, Cottonwood. There will be a Halloween contest and Christmas ornament contest.

Old Business President Ann Pustejovsky stated we have two to three rentals scheduled for the remainder of the year. Discussion has been tabled regarding the front door and the ATM until further notice.

New Business President Ann stated the District Three Fall Meeting is Sunday, October 25 in Cottonwood. Ann stated Kay has made baskets of goodies to donate for the district fall meeting. Ann stated it’s time for election of officers and to nominate a fraternalist of the year.

Ann stated the nominating committee for the election of officers for 2015 is Pat Sill, Robert Sill, and Janie Rejcek.

The election will be at next month’s meeting.

Family night is Friday, October 23 at 7 p.m. Ann will supply the meat.

Lodge 187 Round Rock members enjoy October meeting

Hello There!

October meeting was fun. We discussed a fraternalist nomination, delegates for the conventions, and our upcoming Thanksgiving dinner next month.

Birthdays in September were Rubie Volek on the 17th, Wilford Fuchs turned 94 on the 19th, and Johnnie Haak on the 29th.

Birthdays in October are Janie Barron on the 23rd and Karter Meyer turns two on the 24th. October 22 was be Wilford and Jennave Fuchs 66th anniversary.

Jennave Fuchs lead our entertainment, and it was wonderful and fun.

We all played Banga . . . yes, Banga! and it’s very fun!.

A big thank you goes to Rubie Volek from all the kiddos. They all loved the bag of sweets for an early Halloween treat.

We ended the meeting with a tasty filling potluck. Thank you all!

Lodge 187, Round Rock Welcomes Youth to Meeting

Ennis Sewing Circle

Ennis Sewing Circle met on Thursday, October 8, 2015, in the Sokol Club Room. Several arrived at 8 a.m., and we started stretching Georgia Holy’s wedding ring quilt. She bought the quilt top at a garage sale practically for nothing. It was really pretty.

By lunch time, we had 16 members.

President Irene led us in grace, and we enjoyed a delicious lunch. Thank you, ladies who set up everything and of course, the clean-up crew.

After lunch, President Irene called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited, and a moment of silence was held for Bessie Kubin Vavra, Steve Kosarek, Mildred Kubin Cepica, and Vlasta Kubin. The “Our Father” was recited for the above and all our sick members.

We had 16 members present. Secretary Dolores Vrana read her minutes of the last meeting, and Treasurer Dorothy Bobalek gave her report.

Both were approved as read.

Ginny Svehlak read several funny articles that we all enjoyed. She also suggested that we have the Christmas party on December 3 instead of the 10th as the president will be out of state on a trip to Colorado. Everyone agreed to that as we want our president with us at the party.

Sunshine Lady Ann announced October birthday celebrants Sadie Kubin, Mildred Trlica, Georgia Holy, Margaret Martinek, Bertha Podhrasky, and Georgie Morales. “Happy Birthday”

was sung to Georgia Holy and Georgie Morales. We signed a birthday card for Bertha Podhrasky and a sympathy card for Lil Kosarek and her family for the loss of her son Steve.

Quilt Scheduler Pat Fowler announced we will quilt the Junior Sokol traveling fund quilt in November and party in December.

President Irene announced that

three of our members have passed away this year, and we have only gained one new member. She reminded everyone to bring a friend; maybe they will enjoy us and join our Circle.

President Irene intended to have tickets for us to start buying for the Christmas party prize drawing, but she forgot them. So remember your money next month, and we can double up in buying tickets. There will be two quilts and many other items.

President Irene also announced that we needed to start thinking about items for Christmas sacks for shut-in members, and we will have to decide at the next meeting. Time sure gets away fast. If anyone would like to donate items or cash that would be appreciated. We are to spend $10 for our Christmas gifts. Please put your name on them.

Officer nominations were discussed. President Irene and Vice President Ginny Svehlak volunteered to keep their same positions. Thank you both for that. Secretary Dolores Vrana said she would accept the treasurer’s position, and Ann Clagett accepted the secretary’s position. Dorothy Prachyl volunteered to be our Sunshine Lady.

How great these ladies are; thank you so much. The above will take over in January 2016.

Lodge 202, Jourdanton Member Named PHS Alumni Homecoming Queen

1955 Pleasanton High School graduates Mary Ann Barta and Pete Rosales were honored with the titles PHS Alumni Homecoming Queen and King at the homecoming game recently. Graduates from the years ending in “5” were recognized at the game. Mary Ann’s daughter Valerie, who graduated from Pleasanton High School in 1975 — 20 years after her mother — also shared a high school photo of Mary Ann, right. Mary Ann and Valerie are members of Lodge 202, Jourdanton.

President Irene is expecting a new great-grandson. She has started him a sailboat quilt which is red, white, and blue. She made her own pattern just by looking at a picture. How great that is.

President Irene also read an article on God’s plan for aging. It was really clever.

Thank you went out to Ann for the pretty Halloween decorations.

President Irene thanked all for coming, quilting, visiting, the wonderful food, and for just coming. She asked for everyone to pass the word about our Thanksgiving lunch on November 12 and about items for our shut-in members’ Christmas sacks.

Fort Worth Friendship Club

Members of the Friendship Club met on Wednesday, October 7, 2015, at St. Thomas Church Dining Room for their monthly meeting and social.

President Margaret Sears called the meeting to order and welcomed all.

The Pledge of Allegiance was said.

Minutes from the last meeting were read by Secretary Mary Ann Krivanek, and Treasurer Jo Ann Wilcox gave the financial report. Both were approved and accepted as presented.

President Margaret appointed Eliz-

abeth Creamer, Marilyn Llewellyn, and Darlene Tompkins to serve on the nominating committee. According to our guidelines, the slate of officers will be presented at the November meeting followed by elections, and new officers will assume duties in January.

Our November Thanksgiving luncheon was discussed. Mary Ann volunteered to bake a turkey and make dressing. Helen Skrasek volunteered to bake a turkey breast, but later had to back out due to some travel plans already made. President Margaret will do this for Helen. The Club pays for the turkeys. We have excellent cooks as members so we are assured of great, juicy turkeys with dressing. Everyone was asked to bring a dish to compliment the turkeys and dressing. November is also a designated month in which we bring nonperishable food items for St. Thomas Food Pantry.

The Christmas meeting was discussed. A gift exchange will be held for those that want to participate with a $10 gift limit, or you can donate to the Food Pantry. Having a cookie exchange was discussed. Decision to be made at the November meeting. A volunteer is needed to pick up the fried chicken each month starting in January. Special thanks went out to the “Chicken Person” who has been doing this all year.

Lydia Alholm reported she and Lorraine Cross were on the honor roll for ages 90-plus for 2015-2016 for the Fort Worth Retired School Employees Association. This is a service organization for all public school and higher education retirees. Congratulations, Lydia and Lorraine! It was further reported that Anna Johnson had called Libbie that she would not be able to come to the meeting, and that Camille Bolcer is or has been in the hospital.

Lydia reported that Libbie’s nephew, Steve Kosarek, her sister Lil’s youngest son, had a massive heart attack on his birthday and passed away on October 6 at the age of 55. His celebration of life mass will be at Saint Maria Goretti Catholic Church in Arlington, Texas.

President Margaret stated that Libbie said Mike Voorhies, our fire marshall speaker in September, told her that if we ever wanted a policeman speaker at a future meeting, he would get us one to speak. No decision was made.

Thanks to all the ladies who brought door prizes. There was a total of six prizes so that means we had six happy winners. The 50/50 dollar game winners were Debbie Skrasek and Darlene Tompkins. Congratulations go out to all.

the tables, Lydia told three cute, funny jokes which were enjoyed by all. Really big thanks go out to Betty Krenek, the dish washer, and Mary Schneider, the dish dryer, and all the others who assisted. Thanks also to Lupe Esparza who always makes the coffee and tea – we cannot do without her. A great luncheon was enjoyed. Games were then played. A good time was had by all.

I was unable to be at the meeting, and big thanks to Debbie Skrasek for the notes she had sent me. I didn’t even have to ask her to do this; she just did it. Thanks, Debbie, for being a great friend. All tables were decorated in the Halloween theme, and the table I usually sit at won second place.

Debbie apparently did a great job. I don’t know who won first, since I wasn’t there. All had a great time.

The next meeting will be Wednesday, November 4. Don’t forget to bring food items for St. Thomas Food

Pantry, and your dish to complement turkey and dressing. See you then!

News My family has been saddened about the death of my nephew Steve.

His mother is a former Friendship Club member, before all the construction on I-820. She lives in Arlington, and the traffic and construction has been awful and just got to be impossible. Hopefully when all is completed, she will start back again. The mass at Saint Maria Goretti’s Church was very special. Father Luke, who formerly was at my church of St. Andrews, celebrated the mass as he is the new pastor. Steve’s oldest brother Bill carried the ashes. Five of Steve’s nephews and nieces read prayers and carried the gifts, and Steve’s brother John David made remarks of remembrance. Interment of ashes was in the Saint Francis Cremains Garden at the church.

visit from daughter-in-law Kathy and grandson Danny, his wife, and two children from Glen Ellen, Illinois, who came to Texas to the SMU 100th anniversary, homecoming, and football game. All had a grand time visiting.

Someone recently asked Lydia if she still goes to WinStar because they have not read anything about her in the Vestnik recently. Well, yes, she still goes to WinStar at least one time per month, and yes, she still wins, sometimes big times.

I certainly enjoyed the recent visit with Joe and Joyce Ehrenberger from Charlotte, North Carolina. They came to Texas for a two-week visit. We attended the Texas Czech Genealogy Society conference in Caldwell which is always so nice to see and visit with friends.

SPJST Home Office, Czech Heritage Museum deliver Czech heritage to Temple Veterans’ home

SPJST Home Office joined with the Czech Heritage Museum of Temple to celebrate Czech Heritage Month with residents of the William Courtney Texas State Veterans Home on Friday morning, October 9, 2015. Residents

enjoyed an appealing svacina of Czech and American treats, including kolaches, buchtas, meats, and cheeses.

The musical backdrop was provided by accordionist Ralph Milek of Holland. SPJST President Brian Vanicek provided a historical sketch of Czech immigration and settlement in Texas, complemented by additional commentary by Czech Heritage Museum Curator Kenny Lange. District Two invites all to November 13 lock-in

Dear Youth Members, District Two will host a lock-in on Friday, November 13, 2015, at 7 p.m. to Saturday, November 14 at 7 a.m.

The big all-night party will be held in Temple at Wilson Park and Recreation

Center located at 2205 Curtis B. Elliott Drive. The entire gym has been reserved for SPJST youth and their friends. We welcome all SPJST members from all around Texas to come and join us. Members, bring a friend or two. We want this to be the best District Two Lock-In ever! We need to make up for the 2014 lock-in which was cancelled a couple of times due to the December weather and football play-offs. Can’t come and stay all night? Join us for the time convenient.

Just let me know in advance of when you will arrive or when you need to leave. Parents, if you’d like to stay the entire time, we’d love to have you.

We will ask you to take advantage of the quiet room and get some rest for your drive home the next morning.

We will begin get acquainted challenges around 7:30 p.m. followed by snacks of all kinds, including hot dogs.

Snacks and drinks will be provided for the entire evening by the district. We ask that no food or drinks be brought in. For youth to be able to enjoy spending time with one another and having a great time, we ask that no cell phones or electronic devices be brought. Games, movies, crafts, along with different tournaments, such as bunco, basketball, volleyball, and much more will be held throughout the night. And, of course, we will have hourly door prizes for those who stay awake. There will be activities for all ages. It’s been almost four months since we have all been together at camp. Let’s make this another memorable night. Who knows what else might be in store for the night? You don’t want to miss out. If you have any other suggestions for the evening, please let me know, and we’ll see if we can make it happen.

Lodge 17 New Tabor Youth Club reports on October meeting

The October 4, 2015, meeting of SPJST Lodge 17, New Tabor Youth Club was called to order at 3:10 p.m.

by President Dillon Narro. The Pledge of Allegiance and the SPJST Youth Club Motto were led by youth club member Tabor Dowell.

The register was read by Secretary Maddie Kellum. Present were 15 members, one guest, and 12 adults.

Our guest was Emma Loehr, a friend of one of our new members Rylie Lloyd. We welcomed two new members, Addison Holcomb and Rylie Lloyd, to our club.

District Four Youth Visit Abilene Zoo

District Four youth went on an outing on October 3, 2015. We met at Abilene Zoo. There were 12 youth club members present. We went into the reptile room and saw a lot of different snakes, turtles, and lizards. Outside in their cages were lion, tigers, alligator, zebras, and many more animals. We also rode the little train, which takes you around the zoo.

We are trying to have at least one outing per quarter. Our next outing will be

Saturday, December 5 in San Angelo. We will be riding the SPJST Float in the “Lights of Christmas” Parade. I will send notices out again next month. Please let me know if you have youth who wish to ride on the float.

Narro, reported a new policy for YAD competition is all members and joining members must attend a majority of monthly meetings before YAD in June. SPJST camp requires seven meetings to go without a cost to members. Youth members not meeting the seven meeting requirements may still go to camp, but a partial fee will need to be paid by the member.

District Four held the Christmas ornament contest on October 3, 2015, at the fall day. Eleven youth participated in the contest. Our judges were Mr. Brian, Mr. Frank, and Mr. Lee. Under old business, we will be going to Haunted Jail in Georgetown on October 24. We will meet at Dollar Tree parking lot at 7 p.m. My family brought the door prizes. Next month, the Bosley family will bring them.

The carnations were donated by Shelby Kalina from Apples-N- Spice.

Youth and adults read the cards to the residents of the nursing home. Youth club member Hunter Wood then played his guitar while all the youth sang a song for the residents. Everyone seemed to have a fun time, and these youth and members really did “make a difference” in these residents’ day.

Resolution of Sympathy

We, SPJST Lodge 38, Kovar, express our deepest sympathy to the family of KATHERINE (KATHY) MANEY. Funeral service for Katherine (Kathy) Yvonne (Kaiser) Maney, age 61 of Smithville, Texas, was held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, September 19, 2015, at All Faiths of the Pines Funeral Home in Smithville with Gordon (Bubba) Fowler officiating. Burial followed in Oak Hill Cemetery. Visitation was held Friday, September 18 from 5 to 7 p.m. with the family present at All Faiths of the Pines Funeral Home. Pallbearers were Edward Hoelscher, Ronnie Pietsch, Brad Hurta, Lynn Frerich, Mark Saunders, and Vince Kaiser.

Kathy Maney was born in Giddings on June, 11, 1954, to Edgar Roland Kaiser and Clara Hattie (Biehle) Kaiser. She was baptized on June 27, 1954, at St. James Lutheran Church in Lexington by Reverend Paul Stengel and confirmed on May 5, 1968, also at St. James Lutheran Church by Reverend John Seimglusz. Her confirmation verse was John 8:31 and 32, “Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If you continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

Kathy was united in marriage to Mike C. Maney on May 10, 1975, at St. James Lutheran Church by Reverend Robert Hartfield. She owned Maney Insurance Agency for many years. She loved going to the family ranch and spending time with her granddaughters and family.

Kathy had served as secretary of Lodge 38, Kovar since April 2010.

She was a very kind and loving person. We will miss her very much.

She was preceded in death by parents Edgar and Clara Kaiser; infant brother Charles; and in-laws Billie Mike and Vivian Maney.

Kathy is survived by husband of 40 years Mike Maney of Smithville; daughter and son-in-law Kari and Curtis Brawley of La Grange; granddaughters Kylin and Kyndal Brawley of La Grange; brother Curtis Kaiser of Smithville; sister Karen and husband Edward Hoelscher of Lexington; brother-in-law Jay and wife Tracey

In Memory of Gladys Mogonye

Gladys Faye Mogonye, 85, passed away on Monday evening, September 7, 2015, surrounded by her loving family. Gladys was born the fourth of six children to Willie and Olga Kriedel Gebert on October 4, 1929.

Gladys grew up on the family farm and attended Gladys Mogonye schools in Manor, Texas. Not long after meeting the love of her life, Anton Charlie Mogonye at the Dessau Dance Hall, they married and together raised two daughters.

They celebrated 47 years of marriage before Anton’s passing in 1993.

Gladys was very active in her lifetime, owning and operating her in-house daycare for more than 30 years and volunteering with SPJST Lodge 18, Elgin as the “Ticket Lady” for 33 years. She was a devoted wife, mother, nanny, and dear friend to everyone she knew. Gladys loved listening to polka music, gambling, taking trips to Vegas to see Wayne Newton, and shopping at Walmart. She was known for her fried chicken and banana pudding, and spending time with her family and friends.

Gladys was preceded in death by her husband Anton; both her parents; infant son Charles David; brothers Leslie, Emmitt, and Wilton; sisters Ina Rhea “Punkin’” and Lois; and her beloved “Little Maggie.”

Gladys is survived by daughters Janice and husband Danny Blisard of Elgin and Judy Mogonye and fiancé Justin Greenhalgh of Pflugerville; her only granddaughter Cassandra and

husband Curtis Craig, Jr. of Elgin; great-granddaughters Charlie and Coltlyn Craig; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family received guests at Elgin Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, September 11. A funeral service was conducted at the Elgin Funeral Home at 10 a.m. Saturday, September 12 with the Reverend Mark Nygard officiating. Interment followed at Elgin Cemetery.

He was born July 14, 1954, in Fort Smith, Arkansas to Thomas and Patsy DeCamp Pope. He married Cecil Ann McDonald on March 19, 1983, at First Christian Church in Temple.

He was employed by Crestview RV in Georgetown. He worked in RV repair most of his adult life. He loved fishing, coaching little league, cooking, and spending time with family and friends. Tommy loved football and was a member of Temple Wildcat Quarterback Club.

He was a member of SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton.

Survivors are his loving wife Cecil Pope of Temple; parents Thomas E. and Patsy Pope of Temple; sons Matt Pope of Temple and Ben and wife Mercedes Pope of Tulsa, Oklahoma; daughter Sarah Pope of Temple; sister Tammy and husband Ray Belk of Nolanville; grandson Lucas Pope of Tulsa, Oklahoma.

We, the members of the Resolution Committee of Lodge Hvezda Texasu No. 47, Seaton, Texas, on behalf of our membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed brother, RUSSEL WILSON MALCIK. Russel Wilson Malcik was born May 20, 1947, at Kings Daughters Hospital in Temple, Texas. He went to be with Jesus on Saturday, October 3, 2015.

He had tremendous faith in God. Russel graduated from Temple High School in Russel Malcik 1965.

In 1966, he married Theresa Sharon Farr and joined the United States Air Force the same year. They were stationed in Little Rock, Arkansas. While in the Air Force he served as a crew chief, licensed to work on KC 135 air craft. His squadron performed inflight refueling on B-52 Bombers during the Vietnam War. While in Little Rock, Arkansas, their first son Russel Guy Malcik was born in 1967. In 1969, their second son Jeffrey Kurt Malcik was born. In 1970, Russel was honorably discharged from the Air Force.

At that time, he attended A&P air craft mechanic school. He became licensed to work on various types of aircraft.

After completing A&P school, he moved his family back to Temple to help his father Wilson John Malcik run the family HVAC company, Malcik Refrigeration, Heating, and Air Conditioning Service. In 1975, their third son Brandt Ross Malcik was born at King’s Daughters Hospital in Temple.

Russel became a private pilot and later an instructor for 10 years at Reed Air

Service located at Temple Municipal Airport. Russel and his father Wilson purchased and refurbished an old 1942 Piper Cub called the Vagabond. They rebuilt the engine and refurbished the air frame. Russel then taught both his father and mother to fly. Russel was a member of the Texas Demolay in his youth and later became a 32nd degree Mason, member of King Solomon Lodge 1427. He was a master scuba diver and traveled all over the Caribbean, scuba diving with his close friends.

Russel was an extraordinary man and showed unconditional love to all his family and friends.

He was a member of SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton.

He is survived by sons Guy Malcik, Jeffrey Malcik, and Brandt Malcik, wife Mindy Malcik; Sharon Farr Malcik, mother of his children; stepdaughter Kelly Gregory and children Madison and Stephanie; grandsons Branson, Josh, Mason, and Hudson Malcik; sister Kay Cox, husband David and niece Lea; and brother Roger Malcik.

He is preceded in death by his loving wife Georgia Mae Lincke.

Libbie was born on September 14, 1941, in Floresville, the daughter of Joseph Verne Bayer, Sr., and Libbie Svoboda Bayer. She graduated from Edison High School in San Antonio in 1960, and earned Libbie Kolenda her bachelor of arts degree in cartography from Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos in 1988. Libbie worked as a civil servant in the Department of Defense for 31 years, rising to the rank of Supervisor of Cartography in the Defense Mapping Agency. Her work in that group included transitioning the map-making from paper to digital, preparing maps for the First Gulf War,

October 24, 1970, in St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Kosciusko. In his early years, he worked for Datapoint then became an insurance agent. He retired this summer from RVOS. Vernon’s passions included farming, ranching, fishing, gardening, and hunting with his grandkids. He was very involved with the Holy Name Catholic Church, serving as a Eucharistic minister, money counter, and a member of the Knights of Columbus. He also served as a board member of the River City Credit Union.

The thing Vernon loved most of all was spending time with his family and friends. He was known for his contagious smile and his love of living life to the fullest. He enjoyed visiting with people, sharing his love of cooking and hanging out with his family. He was not one to turn down a lively card game of Pitch or a good game of throwing washers. His joyful spirit will be missed at many family, church, and community events.

He was preceded in death by his wife Sami “Alene” Pruski; parents; parents-in-law Benedict and Susie Lyssy Wiatrek; and brother Eldren Pruski.

Desmond Robert Johns entered eternal rest Monday, September 14, 2015 at 2:30 A.M. at Regency Manor Nursing Home in Floresville at the age of 90 years and 15 days. Desmond was a lifelong resident of Wilson County, Texas.

Desmond was born August 30, 1925 in the Calaveras community of Wilson County, the son of Bruno Johns and Edith Reinhard Johns. Desmond Johns He completed Saspamco and Calaveras grade schools before graduating from Floresville High School in 1944. After graduation, Desmond proudly served his country as a Corporal in the 7th Quartermaster Company, 7th Infantry Division of the United States Army during World War II. He was a decorated war veteran, receiving the Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon, a Good Conduct Medal, Army Occupation Ribbon for his service in Japan, a Victory Ribbon, and two Overseas Service Bars.

Desmond married Libbie Tkadlec on June 15, 1948 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Desmond worked for many faithful years as the owner and operator of Johns Oil Company in Floresville.

He was a member of SPJST Lodge 107, Floresville. He was also an active member of the community, serving as a Wilson County Reserve Deputy, volunteered with the Floresville Fire Department, served on the Floresville City Counsel, and served as Commander of the VFW Post 8555, for many years. Desmond was also a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Floresville.

Desmond is survived by his loving wife Libbie of 67 years; children Kenneth Johns of Schertz, Charles Johns and wife Nillie, of Floresville, and David Johns and wife Robin, of Floresville; grandchildren Brandon Johns and wife Katherine, Kimberly Shoemaker and husband Craig, Rebecca Luzania and husband Nick, Charles Johns, Jr. and wife Chrissy, Justin

Svatý Václav (Holy Wenceslas, born around 907,  September 28, 929 or 935) was the Bohemian Prince, the first Bohemian Saint Martyr regarding as the Czechs’ patron. He was a member of the Přemyslid’s House governors first dynasty. Svatý Václav is the individual Bohemian Saint, whose feast day is a deal of the worldwide Roman Catholic Church calendar.

Enough reliable historical sources mistake for biographical information on Svatý Václav. Václav’s father was the Prince Vratislav. Drahomíra was Václav’s mother. Vratislav was Ludmila`s son, so Václav was Ludmila’s grandson. The old Slavs’ legend describes the ceremony of the Václav’s hair cutting at his seven (apx. 915). Václav’s mother Drahomíra took the Government after the Vratislav`s death (921). Václav and his younger brother Boleslav rest in the care of their grandmother Ludmila. Drahomíra believed in paganism and Ludmila with Václav were Christians. Between Ludmila and Drahomíra arose the dispute about the influence on Wenceslas about power in the Principality and the relation to the Saxony and its King, Henry Ptáčník.

Václav began to rule as the Přemyslid’s Prince about 925. The Přemyslid Principality laid in Central Bohemia at that time, in apx. 30 km circle around the Prague Castle. Václav let to transport the relics of the Princess Ludmila from Tetín town to Prague city, called back priests exiled through the Drahomíra and he turn his mother Drahomíra out. Later between Václav and Boleslav was the variance, what reason was probably the desire of both brothers after the Prince's power and their difference of opinion on a foreign policy.

Boleslav invited Václav to his feast in Stará Boleslav, where he let Václav to assassinate (murder). It became probably at 935 and Václav was 29 years old at that time. Then Boleslav let transport the Václav’s relics to the Prague Castle, where they are stored in the Hl. Vitus Cathedral.

Advantages of the Svatý Václav: He honored his grandmother, he led a pious and moral life, he took care of the Christian faith propagation, he built Christian churches, he made treats of mercy and love, take care of the poor, of the sick and orphans, providing shelter and hospitality to travelers and foreigners. He was a brave and excellent rider on a horse. Sundry wonders have been attributed to Hl. Wenceslaus.

Svatý Václav’s Millennium was celebrated during the opening ceremony completed the Cathedral of Hl. Vitus in Prague at 1929, with the present of President T.G. Masaryk. Statue of Svatý Václav sitting on a horseback stands on Wenceslas Place (Václavské náměstí) in Prague. The Czech nation celebrates Svatý Václav’s martyrdom anniversary the day September 28 as Czech statehood day.

Czechoslovak Foreign Institute announces 2016 program

The Czechoslovak Foreign Institute announces the Czech Summer Study Program. The dates are June 28 to July 18, 2016, with a departure date of June 27 to Praha, Česká Republika.

Housing—Group participants will be housed in dorms of the Agricultural School at Suchdol with double occupancy rooms sharing a bat. The dorm is situated in the northwestern part of Praha, linked to downtown by bus and subway.

Food Service—Three meals a day will be served featuring authentic Czech cuisine.

Czech Language Instruction—The class will meet five days a week for four hours before lunch and once a week for two hours of conversation after lunch. The classes are non-credit courses. Arrangements for credit must be made with your university before you depart.

Instructors—Professors will be from the Filozfická Fakulta of Charles University and a linguistic institute in Praha.

There will be tours of many historic places in the Czech Republic. The tour needs 10 participants before January 2016 to insure the tour will take place.

Google event an outstanding success

“Within the first three minutes I learned a Google search trick that I had never heard of!” . . . “I believe this was one of the very best conferences we have ever attended!” . . . “I thought I wasn’t computer literate enough to be able to enjoy the presentations, but Lisa Cooke made everything so easy to understand” . . “Thank you for always hosting such a wonderful, informative meeting” . . .

These were just a few of the various comments that were made by attendees on October 10, 2015, at the conclusion of the Texas Czech Genealogical Society’s genealogy conference entitled “It’s All About Google” with Google expert, Lisa Louise Cooke, presenting four very different and informative sessions.

The event was held at Caldwell Civic/Visitor Center in Caldwell, Texas.

The day began with registration, coffee, juice, and kolaches promptly at 8 a.m.

Renewing acquaintances, bidding on items at the silent auction table, and visiting the TCGS sales table, laden with a number of new Czechthemed items, new Christmas ornaments, 2016 calendars, and many assorted gift items and books consumed the time prior to 9 a.m. when the day’s events began.

TCGS President Charlene Hurta welcomed guests, and prayer was offered by Ronnie Horcica, who manned the sound equipment booth for the entire day.

Lisa Louise Cooke’s first presentation entitled “Google Tools and Procedures for Solving Family History Mysteries” began at 9 a.m. This informative session had attendees sitting on the edges of their seats, as they learned about tools they could use to narrow their searches which would

save time and give one a better chance to get the results he/she desired more quickly. Her second presentation, “5 Ways to Enhance Your Genealogy Research with Old Maps” was another session that held the attention of everyone in attendance. She showed five types of maps that every genealogist should use. In addition, she explained where you can locate free digitized maps from the comfort of your home, and then she discussed the techniques for incorporating old maps into your family history. Lisa’s easy style of delivering the information that she knows so well allowed her audience to understand the key points and ask questions if they desired.

Lunch, consisting of barbecue brisket and sausage, pinto beans, potato salad, coleslaw, bread, tea, coffee, and cake, was enjoyed by the guests, after which they had a chance to check on their bids for items at the silent auction table or to purchase items from the sales table.

At 1 p.m., Lisa took the stage with her presentation “Google! Everything New That You Need to Know for Genealogy.” In this session, the audience learned about new ways to search, the best operators for genealogy searches, advanced search strategies, how to conduct a link search, searching related websites, and using Google Books and Google Earth searches. The hour flew by, and after a few questions, and a short break, Lisa began her last presentation of the day, which was one that many people came especially to hear: “Time Travel with Google Earth.”

In this session, she showed how old maps, genealogical records, images, and videos can come together to create stunning time travel experiences in Google Earth. She explained how to locate and explore our ancestor’s neighborhoods across decade around the world and offered a number of places to search, including links to old

newspapers. Everyone seemed to feel they had certainly received more information than they could imagine in these four presentations. One great gift to those in attendance was Lisa’s presentation papers, which will help genealogists to look back on the links and websites she mentioned.

The day closed with lucky bidders claiming their silent auction prizes.

Charlene Hurta mentioned that our next event, “Czech Gems,” will be held on Saturday, January 30, 2016, at the Caldwell Civic/Visitor Center.

2016 will be a year-long celebration of TCGS’ 15th anniversary.

This service will take place at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 22 in Goolsby Chapel (on the UNT campus) . . . on the morning after our performance of Jan Ryba’s Christmas Mass and immediately following the 11 a.m. Sunday Catholic mass.

Legend Christmas ornaments available in TCGS Gift Shop

Is it too early to think about CHRISTmas? Would you believe that CHRISTmas Day will be here in 66 days?

As CHRISTmas trees are decorated, the majority of people never give the origin of ornaments a thought.

If asked, many will say, “Oh, ornaments began in Germany,” and it is true the first blown ornaments are credited as being blown in the 1500s

by Hans Greiner in Lauscha, Germany. For a good number of years, Germany captured the world market on glass CHRISTmas ornaments.

Known for their artistry with glass, factories in what is now known as the Czech Republic, merged into the market with their own unique and impressive glass ornaments. Like those who worked in the Czech glass factories, many learned the trade from their fathers, grandfathers, or other family members; and while other countries like Bohemia, Moravia, Japan, etc. entered the CHRISTmas glass ornament market, Germany stayed in the lead.

World War I definitely had an enormous influence on all industries, including the glass industry in Bohemia, Moravia, and Germany as well. When the war ended, German manufacturers quickly began producing their ornaments. Looking to the future and stepping out of the box, so to speak, Max Eckhardt, a United States businessman, knew the Corning Company of Corning, New York, had a machine whereby they could make light bulbs out of a ribbon of glass. Fast forwarding, Mr. Eckhardt teamed up with a representative of the F.W. Woolworth Company. The Corning Company agreed to see if their equipment could

indeed product glass ornaments, and by the 1940s, the Shiny Brite Company was making ornaments in far more quantity than Germany.

World War II brought changes to the entire world and, by the end of the war, Lauscha’s glassworks was stateowned, and soon ceased operations.

Since the fall of the Berlin Wall, many of these glass factories have been reestablished, and the Czech Republic has several ornament factories as well.

TCGS carries ornaments from some of these factories year-round.

Many will remember, or recall parents and grandparents, describing CHRISTmas trees and the way they were decorated in days gone by – candles (with many exciting tales of trees catching on fire and the “dancing” around in trying to put it out), fruits, nut, and later popcorn or colorful paper chains.

Through history, well over 100 ornaments have become associated with traditions, symbols, and/or legends, many of which are associated with the birth of Christ, His crucifixion, or in some form have spiritual meaning.

With frequent and historical border changes affecting both Germany and former Czechoslovakia, a number of customs are intertwined, and it is amazing how a simple CHRISTmas ornament can tell the story of the reason for the season, the birth of Christ, pass down a family story, or create a new family tradition which will be passed down through generations to come.

I want you to know about a contest through the Smithsonian Institution called Global Folklorist Challenge with a deadline of November 30, 2015. They are looking for junior folklorists (age 18 and under) where kids interview members of their community and create short films about a cultural tradition. SPJST youth are encouraged to document Texas Czech traditions.

A person might interview an older Texas Czech about: • • • • •

The interview should be about a skill or activity that a person is considered personally accomplished at (it’s not about history or traditions not practiced any longer).
