Czech-alicious!

Czech Heritage Month is a time to recognize and celebrate everything Czech . . . and a time to eat delicious food. Although traditional Czech recipes are not exactly healthy cooking, the food sure is marvelous and mouth-watering! Here are some traditional Czech meal items.

Soups A Czech meal sometimes starts with soup (polévka). Some popular Czech soups are potato soup (bramborová polévka or bramboračka); garlic soup (česneková polévka or česnečka); chicken noodle soup (kuřecí polévka s nudlemi); beef soup with liver dumplings (hovězí polévka s játrovými knedlíčky); sauerkraut soup (zelná polévka or zelňačka); and dill soup, made from sour milk (koprová polévka or koprovka).

The Main Course The main course (hlavní chod) usually consists of meat (maso) and a side dish (příloha). The most popular meats are chicken (kuře) and pork (vepřové), followed by beef (hovězí), often served with some kind of sauce (omáčka). Fish is not very common although trout (pstruh), cod (treska), salmon (losos), and seafood (plody moře) are sometimes served. The mackerel (makrela) is a popular fish to grill over open fire in summer.

Carp (kapr) is traditionally served on Christmas Eve.

Side Dishes The most common Czech side dishes are boiled potatoes (vařené brambory); roasted potatoes (opékané brambory); mashed potatoes (bramborová kaše - pureed, šťouchané brambory - coarsely mashed); French fries (bramborové hranolky); rice (rýže); bread dumplings (houskové knedlíky); potato dumplings (bramborové knedlíky); sauce (omáčka); sauerkraut or cabbage (zelí); and potato salad (bramborový salát).

Desserts Dessert (moučník, dezert or zákusek) comes in many varieties.

Some use butter (máslo) and whipped cream (šlehačka), but some are light and fluffy. In general, Czech desserts and cakes (dorty) are not overly sweet. Some popular desserts are koláče, crepes (palačinky) filled with jam (džem) or fruit (ovoce) such as strawberries (jahody), chocolate (čokoláda), whipped cream (šlehačka) and sometimes nuts (oříšky); honey cake called medovník; fruitfilled dumplings (ovocné knedlíky); apple strudel (jablečný závin); cake (dort); and ice cream sundae (zmrzlinový pohár).

Beverages As far as drinks (nápoje) go, a Czech meal is often accompanied by beer (pivo), mineral water (minerálka), a variety of fruit juices, such as orange juice (pomerančový džus), apple juice (jablečný džus), pear juice (hruškový džus), or a soda (specify the kind because soda in Czech means “soda water”). Czechs also like to drink tea (čaj) with sugar (cukr) and lemon (citrón), and coffee (káva) with or without milk (mléko) or cream (smetana).

Department: Supreme Lodge Vice President FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Reports to: Vice President

Summary Under supervision of the Vice President and Insurance Operations Manager, assists with reaching out to members to ensure membership satisfaction, coordinate with field managers and help with overflow work for the entire insurance department.

Duties and Responsibilities 1. Reach out to current and potential members using the telephone and email to further goals of the organization.

2. Coordinate with field managers and agents to create follow-up appointments with members.

3. Work with all employees in Insurance Department to help with overflow work.

4. Work with the AS400 system and Windows-based system to update member information.

5. Provide assistance to members concerning insurance certificates including coverage and options available.

6. File and scan.

7. Assist with some underwriting aspects including research and telephone analysis.

8. Assist with new applications including processing and scanning.

9. Assist with changes to beneficiaries and name changes, issue duplicate certificates, and input into the system.

10. Assist with issuing certificates and agent recruitment needs.

Qualifications 1. Excellent verbal and interpersonal communication skills and present a professional image both in person and over the phone.

2. Must be comfortable directly reaching out to members and responding to questions in an appropriate manner.

3. Working knowledge of Windows-based software.

4. Ability to compose correspondence.

5. Ability to use calculator, copier, and general office equipment.

Education, Experience, Knowledge 1. High school diploma required.

2. Experience in an in-bound and out-bound call environment preferred.

Lodge Incentive Guidelines

The 2015 Lodge Incentive Guidelines will include membership program incentives and be based upon premium income generated by the lodges. The formula for calculating the Enhanced Premium Refund is:

1. $1.00 for each paid-up certificate; and 2. 2.80% of the lodge’s annual earned premium.

To receive the Enhanced Premium Refund, lodges must meet the following three-point criteria:

1. Hold regular lodge meetings in accordance with Article 50 of the SPJST By-Laws and offer a wellrounded fraternal program.

2. Return all requested paperwork on time by the due date.

3. Submit regular letters/photos to the Vestnik.

From the Supreme Lodge Vice President Term Conversions

Hello, Vestnik Readers.

This is a continuation of my discussion to give a greater understanding of life insurance concepts and ideas. This week, I am writing to you about term conversions. Some of you over the age of 60 have recently received letters about a conversion option for your term policies. I would like to give all of the Vestnik readers a better idea of what term conversions are and are not.

To put simply, a term conversion allows you to change a term policy into a permanent life policy such as a whole life policy until a certain age (generally age 65). Most of our term products have this conversion feature up to the face value of the policy. So you could convert a $50,000 term into as much as a $50,000 whole life policy. Additionally, the term policy can be converted into the permanent product regardless of your health status.

This means that even if you are diagnosed with a serious illness, you can switch to a permanent policy.

Why would you want to switch from a term product to a permanent product? Term products are temporary in nature. With SPJST, you can get up to a 30-year term (depending on age) and after that time, most policies become renewable yearly. If you keep

the insurance after the term period, the amount you will have to pay will go up every year because the cost to insure an older person is more than the cost to insure a younger person. In contrast, for permanent products the cost will typically remain the same.

From my experience, for most people who convert, the initial cost of whole life insurance will be higher than a term policy. However, the price of the term insurance will increase with age while the price of the whole life insurance will remain the same regardless of age. For example, a female non-smoker at age 64 may pay $24.59 per month for a 10-year $25,000 term policy. If she converted to a whole life policy, she may pay $68.81 per month.

While the amount for the whole life is higher initially, the term policy will eventually become much more expensive. At age 85, the person who stayed with their term policy will have to pay $428.84 per month while the whole life policy will still be $68.81 per month.

From the American Fraternal Alliance So what’s all the fuss about corporate governance?

I’ve delivered presentations on the future of the fraternal business model to more than a few member society conventions and State Fraternal Alliance annual meetings over the past several months. And I devote a significant segment of each address to the topic of corporate governance – one of the most important yet misunderstood functions of any healthy organization.

Decision-Making To me, corporate governance is the

process by which societies make decisions and the process by which they select the individuals – convention delegates, board members, officers, etc.

– who are responsible for making those decisions. Unqualified decision makers make poor decisions more frequently than qualified ones. Organizations can recover from the poor decisions of an unqualified leader by replacing him or her. But if the process of selecting an organization’s leaders is fatally flawed, it makes it even more difficult – if not impossible – for a society to remain sustainable because the system has a much greater chance of yielding one poor leader after another.

It’s no secret that the governance

structure I prefer – and the one that has proven to be the most effective for both not-for-profit and for-profit corporations – is one in which a society’s members or delegates elect qualified board members; where the board is responsible for hiring a qualified president and CEO, developing the organization’s strategic plan, and protecting the organization’s assets; and where the president and CEO is charged with hiring a management team to assist him or her in managing the operations of the organization. This structure enhances the accountability of the CEO to the board, and the board to the members; enhances the ability of the organization to identify and retain the most highly qualified leaders; and results in the organization’s leaders making sound decisions for the benefit of its members – current and future.

It’s also no secret that while many fraternals have implemented such a governance structure or are making progress toward doing so in the near future, many society leaders bristle at the notion of making such significant changes to their corporate governance.

The typical response I get from those most resistant to a more modern governance structure is: “Our governance structure has served us well for more than 100 years. We are financially strong and don’t need anyone telling us how to run our organization.”

That may be true, but there is a direct correlation between good decisionmaking (i.e. governance) and organizational sustainability. And it’s a link that regulators clearly understand and are determined to address. Each state will soon be enacting its own corporate governance disclosure law based on the Corporate Governance Annual Disclosure Model Act (GCAD) enacted by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC).

These laws don’t require insurers to meet specific governance standards, but they do compel insurers – fraternal and commercial – to disclose the details about their organization’s corporate governance structure. Bottom line, regulators want to know if insurance company executives and board members are qualified to direct and manage complex financial services organizations, and if the process for identifying those leaders results in the selection of

the most capable individuals to run the company.

Why all the fuss about fraternal corporate governance from the NAIC and individual state regulators? Try these reasons on for size: We’re not selling widgets, we’re selling promises – and some pretty important promises at that. We’re promising to secure our members’ financial futures. We may not have to deliver on those promises for years, decades even.

But when the time comes, regulators want to know we’ll be able to make the sound decisions to fulfill those promises.

Some fraternals are confused about what their financial services mission is.

There are societies out there that behave more like cultural organizations or charities than the financial organizations on which the fraternal model was built. Regulators are rightly concerned about societies that operate their life insurance and annuity operations like a hobby.

While the financial condition of many fraternals has improved in the past few years, there are still some societies on shaky ground, with steady reductions in membership, surplus, and assets.

Regulators take their consumer protection mission seriously. They are bound and determined to not have a single consumer hurt as a result of an insurer insolvency on their watch.

Unlike commercial insurers, fraternals do not have a guaranty fund to pay the claims of insolvent societies. I know as well as anyone that guaranty funds are no guarantee that every claim will be paid in full, but many regulators perceive the lack of fraternal participation in the guaranty fund system as a weakness, which makes them even more concerned about potential poor decision-making (i.e. governance).

Take all this together and you can better understand why helping societies improve their corporate governance structure is one of the Alliance’s highest priorities. We’ll use every tool available to us – workshops, Board Institutes, webinars and yes, every speech I make to a member society or State Fraternal Alliance – to get that message across.

Dear District Five Members/Guests, We have booked SPJST Education and Nature Center (ENC) at Cooper Farm for a fun event on Saturday, October 17 through Sunday October 18, 2015. We are to meet at the ENC on Saturday, October 17 at 10:30 a.m. for check-in. We have several things planned for the day and evening as well as the following day. We are asking that you please let us know if you and your family plan to attend so we can purchase the food and advise ENC Director John Hoelscher of how many cabins may be needed. This is open to any member of District Five. You are not required to stay the night; however, it is available if you choose. Remember that if you stay the night, you will need to bring all of your bedding, sleep clothes, etc. just as you do for camp, and no open toe shoes are al-

The District Six Fall Family Fun Day was held Sunday, September 13, 2015, at St. John’s Parish Hall in Taiton, Texas. The gathering was hosted by Lodge 30, Taiton, and a delicious, healthy catered meal was enjoyed by all. District Director Karen Kaspar introduced Father Gabriel Tawiah from St. John’s Parish to give the blessing for the food and for the SPJST members. The fall fun day gave District Six members an opportunity to participate in cake, needlework, and ornament contests. A special guest presented an afternoon program filled with health and nutrition information. Afterwards, the membership participated in stretch exercises to their favorite polka music.

District Six President Joe Siptak (4) called the members to order, and the youth of Lodge 148, El Maton posted the colors. After posting the colors, Tristan Voldan and Camdan Zielonka led the Pledge of Allegiance. A moment of silence and prayer was observed for the deceased members of District Six. Lodge 30 President Yvonne Marcaurele welcomed 75 members and guests to the annual fun day. District Six Second Vice President/Fraternal Activities Coordinator Helen Zabransky (4) thanked Lodge 30 for hosting the family fun day and introduced special guests attending. District Six Fraternal Field Manager Delisle Doherty,

District Six Director Karen Kaspar, District Six Queen Sky Garcia (40), and Duchess Angelica Manzano (40) were welcomed by the members and thanked for spending the day with District Six. District Six Secretary Wanda Dorotik (30) called the roll for the district officers, lodges, and standing committee members. There were nine lodges represented at the District Six Fun Day: Lodges 4, Hallettsville; 8, Weimar; 23 Moravia; 28, East Bernard; 30, Taiton; 40, El Campo-Hillje; 97, Placedo; 148, El Maton and 151, Wharton.

President Joe Siptak (40) asked guests if they had a few words for the membership. Fraternal Field Manager Delisle Doherty presented an idea of quarterly seminars for members to gain knowledge and understanding of SPJST products. District Six Director Karen Kaspar reported on the American Fraternal Alliance education workshop she attended in Indiana. She announced the passing of past State Field Representative Jerome Hlavaty and read a thank you note from his family to District Six for remembering him. Mr. Hlavaty represented District Six on the Insurance Committee, and Charles Bucek (151) was appointed to be the new representative on that committee. Kaspar reported Lodge 153, La Salle is an inactive lodge, and letters were sent to members reassigning them

to another lodge in District Six. Kaspar then asked members to help support Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje in their fundraising efforts to maintain their SPJST hall.

District Six representative on the By-Law Committee Joe Siptak (4) asked all members to read their Vestnik for information on the changes being

made. He emphasized the importance of electing delegates that are aware of these changes. District Six representative on the Special Structure Committee Lisa Bubela (30) explained their job was to separate SPJST policy procedures from the by-laws. These committees consulted with experts, recommended from the American Fra-

ternal Alliance, to help with the SPJST fraternal restructuring project. District Six Director Karen Kaspar (30) reported the importance of modernizing governance structures and being able to manage compliance requirements. She asked District Six to do their part to move SPJST forward.

District Seven Family Fun Day set for November 8 at Lodge 107, Floresville

Lodge 107, Floresville will host the District Seven Family Fun Day on Sunday, November 8, 2015, at the SPJST Lodge 107 Hall, 1156 FM 1303, Floresville, Texas. Registration for contests and door prizes is from 10 to 10:30 a.m. followed by a brief business meeting. Lodge 107 will provide a complimentary brunch and soft drinks throughout the day. Each lodge is asked to bring its lodge banner for display.

Lunch A sausage plate lunch will be served for $4. To order plates, members are asked to notify their lodge secretary by October 30.

Donations Lodges are asked to bring a gift ($20 value) for the prize drawing to benefit the district and a door prize ($10 value). Or, lodges may prefer to mail a

Lodge 1 Fayetteville barbecue cookoff this Saturday

Fayetteville Lickskillet SPJST Barbecue Cookoff benefitting SPJST Lodge 1, Fayetteville Ball Field will be this Saturday, October 17, 2015, at SPJST Lodge 1, Fayetteville Hall.

Categories are beef brisket, chicken, pork ribs, and pinto beans.

Check-in is Friday, October 16 between 6 and 8 p.m. and Saturday, October 17 until 10 a.m.

Judging time is 12 noon for beans; 1 p.m. for chicken; 2 p.m. for pork ribs; and 3 p.m. for beef brisket.

Entry fee is $70 for three meats and $15 each for beans.

3. Pre-seasoned meat will be allowed.

Pinto beans can be pre-soaked, but not pre-cooked.

4. Sauces may be used during cooking, but should not be put in or on containers to be turned in for judging. Tin foil will be provided to be turned in for judging.

5. A 20-foot by 20-foot area will be available for each team. Only cooking facilities and one vehicle per team will be allowed in the cooking area.

Contestants must supply all needed equipment and supplies.

6. A team will consist of a chief cook and up to four assistant cooks. The chief cook will be responsible for the conduct of his/her team and guests.

7. The chief cook will be responsible for keeping his/her area clean during cooking and before leaving.

8. Excessive use of alcoholic beverages, fighting, or any misconduct by any team member will be grounds for disqualification.

9. The SPJST Youth Club will not be responsible for theft or damages to equipment.

10. Fires must be of wood or wood substance. No gas or electric grills will be used except for cooking beans. No open fires - all fires must be contained.

Holes/dug pits are not permitted.

11. Decisions of committee and judges are final.

12. Committee reserves the right to make any additional rules as situations warrant.

13. No firearms allowed!

14. Turn in: one-half chicken; five pork ribs; five slices brisket.

15. Trophies will be awarded in each category for first, second, and third; grand overall; and reserve overall.

Lodge 47, Seaton reports on October meeting

Dear Vestnik Readers, On a beautiful Sunday afternoon, October 4, 2015, the monthly meeting of Lodge 47, Seaton was called to order at 2 p.m. by President Edwin Pechal. Flags were presented by youth club members Julia Zavodny and Justin Kraatz. Members stood for a moment of silence in memory of departed member Willie Kopriva. May he rest in peace with God’s blessing to the family. Twenty-four members, four youth, and one visitor Tom Williams were in attendance. Thank you to all who attended. Lodge member Clarence Pechal is on the sick list along with Leroy Dana. We wish you well, Clarence and Leroy.

All lodge officers were present for the meeting except Parliamentarian/Board Chairman James Skrabanek and board members E.J. Pechal and Leroy Dana.

The September minutes taken by FAC Tammy Martinez, in my absence, were read and approved. Thanks again, Tammy, for helping me out. The unapproved September board minutes were also read.

Terry Festa made a motion, seconded by Ginger Ringwald, to accept new members Hunter Thomas Sisk, written by Patsy Koslovsky, along with Dorothy Vanicek Bradberry and Bernadine Annie Reynolds. Members voted unanimously to accept these members along with an invitation to join us for our meetings and activities.

Correspondence included a thank you note from youth member Justin Kraatz for the monetary donation given by the lodge for his participation as a District Two royalty participant.

A note was read from the John Moon Family in appreciation of a memorial donation to Lodge 47’s scholarship fund.

President Pechal thanked all members who helped in so many ways to host the District Two Fall Meeting. It was a great afternoon. Thank you to all District Two members, family, and friends who came and enjoyed the day at our lodge. Everyone seemed to have a great time enjoying games, fun, and food. It is always a pleasure to host this event and have members in the district visit our lodge. We hope you all felt at home. A big thank you also came from President Pechal to the many members and friends who worked so diligently for the 2015 Outdoor Extravaganza to be such a success. ber 1; and SPJST Christmas Cards designed by our own former youth member Brandon Hoelscher. These cards are available for sale from the Home Office (25 cards for $10). The 32nd SPJST Convention is scheduled to begin on Monday, June 13, 2016, at Killeen Civic and Conference Center.

Tammy read a letter from President Vanicek, clarifying who is qualified to serve as a delegate and the procedure used in electing delegates to the convention. Where have the last four years gone? It doesn’t seem possible the time is near for another convention. Lodge 47 delegates will be chosen at the November 1 lodge meeting.

Our Fraternalist of the Year will also be chosen at this meeting.

I am very pleased to announce that our District Two Beseda Dancers will perform at the Dallas State Fair on Sunday, October 11. SPJST District Two/State Royalty - Brady Alexander, Seth Martinez, and Kacie Vanecek will also be making a public appearance. We will miss you, State Duchess Makayla. Beseda dancers will enjoy the day before in Dallas for all their hard work this past year, thanks to the many of you supporting them at the beseda fundraiser back in April. We appreciate each of you very much.

These youth and their parents deserve this day due to their hard work, time, and arranging schedules for practices and performances.

Lodge 30, Taiton Backs the Blue

Youth Leader Joyce Kraatz stated the youth meeting was very well attended with 45 members and many parents present today. Youth enjoyed the District Two Six Flags trip on Saturday. Youth will participate in Make A Difference Day throughout the month of October. They are challenging the mother lodge to bring nonperishable groceries to the November 1 meeting. These items will be taken to a local food pantry. Members are not only asked to participate alone, but to ask friends and neighbors to participate. Hopefully on November 1, there will be enough groceries collected to fill a truck bed. To any of you reading this letter, if you’d like to participate, please contact Joyce Kraatz or Amber Bartek, and they will be willing to make arrangements for pickup of your donations. Another challenge for Make a Difference Day is to help someone unable to do things for themselves. Youth parent Ginger Ringwald asked about the possibly of taking a meal to a member who is unable to provide for themselves or unable to medically leave their home . . . another idea for an endless, great project.

If you know of a member who is in need of help, please contact Amber or Joyce and let them know. We not only want our youth, but SPJST to make a difference in the life of someone.

Lodge 48 Beyersville plans progressive 42 tourney

SPJST Lodge 48, Beyersville will host a progressive 42 domino tournament on Saturday, October 31, 2015.

Registration fee is $10 and includes the noon meal, snacks, and prizes.

Lodge 48, Beyersville is located at 10450 FM 519 in Beyersville, Texas, which is near Taylor.

Registration begins at 8 a.m. We plan to begin playing at 9 a.m. Fifteen games will be played with a 20-minute time limit per game. The tournament should end around 4:30 p.m.

We especially invite SPJST members, but anyone is welcome. You do not need a partner as all players will draw numbers and be seated accordingly for the first round. The two winners at each table will move up and will be split up, and each one will play

The treasurer’s report was presented by Mary Lou Mynar. We had two death claims - F. W. Nesrsta and Georgia Montgomery. We had one lapse for Victor A. Hykel. Richard Hlavenka made a motion to accept the treasurer’s report, and Terry Sefcik seconded the motion. Motion passed.

Czech Reporter Jan Vaculik did not have anything to report, but President Freddie Kaluza asked Jan and Marcella to share some of the time they spent with Mayor Ivana Majickova of our Sister City, Kunovice. They shared some of the culture of Kunovice which is 5,000 in population and known for making small airplanes.

Many of them displayed in The Aerial Museum. A big tradition each year is to celebrate the Ride of the Kings Parade which takes place in May as part of the Pentecost Tradition. A group of young men ride horses through the village in a ceremonial procession.

In old business, we discussed the progress of Sokol, and they will be having a grand opening in November.

In new business, we welcomed our new members/additional insurance to Lodge 54 - Helen Kubala sold by the Home Office and Brandon Kaluza sold by sales agent Janice Kaluza. We also welcomed new members Eugene and Marie Horak who transferred from Lodge 6, Cottonwood and Julie Arensman who transferred from Lodge 35, Elk to Lodge 54. Mary Lou

Mynar made a motion to accept all new members and transfers. Linda Kaluza seconded the motion with all members in favor of this.

Our upcoming Christmas party will be on Sunday, December 6 at Tours Hall starting at 3 p.m. The Junior Historians will dance at 3:30 p.m. followed by a fried/baked Chicken dinner meal by S&S Catering for all the guests starting at 4:30 p.m. Santa is expected to arrive at 5:30 p.m. to visit with all the children, hand out goody bags, and take pictures with them. Before all guests leave, there will be several cash prize drawings with $800 total given out for adults and $200 total for the children. Marvin Cepak will play the accordion for our afternoon entertainment and Christmas music during Santa’s visit.

We will need to start thinking about delegates for the upcoming convention in June 2016. Freddie will try to read the proposed by-laws as new, major changes are coming our way from the American Fraternal Alliance and our government in 2017.

Lill Matus salvaged the SPJST original banner from Lone Star Hall after the explosion and brought it to our meeting so we can continue to use it for meetings.

Ronnie Kaluza and Marcella Vaculik were reminded to audit the books before the next meeting.

Happy birthday to Lina Novosad who celebrated her special day on September 24 and Larry Elzner on September 2! They were recognized at Lodge 79, Corpus Christi’s meeting.

Lodge 79 Corpus Christi plans October 18 Czech meal

Lodge 79, Corpus Christi members enjoyed a meal of meatloaf, ribs, and all the trimmings on September 20, 2015. After the meal, the meeting was called to order by President Mark Rebecek who led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. We observed a moment of silence for deceased member Maria Irma Clark. On the sick list are Susan Sacky who is improving, but will undergo new treatments. Weaver Mitchell is home from the hospital with a with congestive heart. Larry Novosad will have neck surgery due to the result of his automobile accident. We wish them all well.

All officers were present, and we had 24 members and guests in attendance.

The August minutes were read by Secretary Virginia Rebecek and approved after one correction.

The July and August treasurer’s reports were given by Treasurer Frank Sacky, and they were approved. He also read a thank you note from the Special Olympics for our donation.

Congratulations to Lodge 84, Dallas member Elisabeth Cowan! She earned the Girl Scouts of America Gold Award. She received the award in a ceremony on May 2, 2015. The Gold Award is the highest achievement within the Girl Scouts of the USA, earned by Senior and Ambassador Girl Scouts.

Only 5.4 percent of eligible Girl Scouts successfully earn the Gold Award. Elisabeth, a member of Girl Scout Troop 2786, presented a project entitled “Fun/Amusement at Golden Acres.” Elisabeth's concern for the elderly after they enter a nursing home led her to create multiple activity days at Gold Acres Nursing Home. Together with her volunteers, she planned and delivered programs to engage the residents and help them improve on their socialization skills and handeye coordination. Her youth volunteers learned what it is like to know an elderly person, and the residents enjoyed fun activities. A scrapbook with all her ideas and plans was created for the facility to continue her programs.

Youth club report was given by Youth Leader Gerilyn Donnell. They had seven members and guests present. At the October meeting, they will be decorating eggs and making care packages for the Women’s Shelter.

Also, Gerilyn and Laura Rebecek are making knitted caps to be given to Driscoll Children’s Hospital in December. If anyone would like to help out, bring them to future meetings.

Birthdays for September were Larry Elzner on the 2nd and Lina Novosad on the 24th. “Happy Birthday” was sung to these members.

Twenty-five dollar door prizes were won by Lila Hajek and Judy Majek.

Lodge 202 Jourdanton members place at county fair

Lodge 202, Jourdanton met Sunday, October 4, 2014, at Jourdanton Community Center with 27 members and guests attending. Amanda Hoggard led the Pledge of Allegiance. Silence was observed for deceased members and in honor of the armed forces. President James House welcomed everyone. Special guests were Atascosa County Judge Bob Hurley and Sales Agent Wendy Pruski.

Atascosa County Judge Bob Hurley read and signed the proclamation designating October as Czech Heritage month in SPJST. Secretary Bettie House read the minutes that were approved as read.

Treasurer Sandra Hoggard presented the financial report.

FAC Kathleen Polasek announced that October 1 began the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive. Several events around the state were noted.

For Make a Difference Day, Youth Leader Regina House stated the youth club is considering the Wounded Warriors Organization as a project. November 8 is District Seven Fall Fun

Day at Lodge 107, Floresville. Shoe boxes filled with small toys and hygiene items will be collected for CASA for Christmas.

Lodge 202 will purchase a convention book ad.

Kathleen Polasek is the lodge fraternalist nominee.

Several participated in the Atascosa County Fair. Sandra Hoggard received five first places, one grand champion, and one reserve grand champion in photography. Lane Hoggard received first place and grand champion for his acrylic painting. Amanda Hoggard received first place and grand champion for her needlework, first place and reserve grand champion for her acrylic painting, and first place for her pencil drawing.

Kelly House received first and grand champion for her craft, second and reserve grand champion for her needlework, and ninth place for her goat at the prospect show. Bettie House received first place and grand champion in baked foods with her apricot kolaches.

Lodge 246 Morgan’s Point plans to make a difference

SPJST lodges statewide will celebrate Make a Difference Day by participating in a variety of community service projects in October. This year, Lodge 246 would like to propose a joint lodge community service project to work on landscaping, trimming shrubs, and cleaning the walkways and outside entrances of our SPJST Home Office building in Temple.

We have planned the event for Saturday, October 31, 2015, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. Lodge 246 will provide drinks and a barbecue lunch for all participants. If your lodge does not already have a community service project planned, we would like to invite you and your members to participate.

Please contact myself at 254-2896816 or Lodge 246 Secretary Melanie Zavodny, should you wish to participate or have any questions. We are planning to have about 18 participants, including some of the children and youth members of the lodges.

Ladies Circle of Lodge 92 Fort Worth

The Ladies Circle of Lodge 92, Fort Worth revisited their “glory” days of way back when at the meeting held on September 8, 2015. The theme for this month was anything to do with sports or school memories. We had many of our members dressed in their high school colors, team jerseys, and teeshirts. Cheerleading uniforms, annuals, and a football mum was on display. Lydia Alholm told about being Homecoming Queen at Grapevine High School in 1938. In 1988, the school honored homecoming queens from past decades at one of the football games. Lydia still had the mum she received for that game in 1988 and wore it to our meeting. She also had pictures of the sign made for her showing the 50-year honor and a picture of her husband driving her in the downtown homecoming parade.

Theretta Praslicka brought her annuals from Castleberry High School and her cheerleader uniform tops from 1952 and 1954. Even though she is a very tiny lady, she chose not to model these teensy, tiny tops. Sunny Kercho brought her Stephen F. Austin cheerleader uniform top and annual. She challenged anyone to pick her out of the cheerleading group picture. My how we change over time. Carolyn O’Brien had her graduation ring, and Lois Smith had her annual. She was also a cheerleader for her school. How much fun was this day of memories, and I’m so sorry to have missed it.

“Strike Up the Bands!” S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living Community, located at 505 East Lake Drive in Taylor, Texas, will host S.P.J.S.T. Music Festival and Christmas Bazaar on Saturday, October 24, 2015, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. No admission will be charged.

Machu family

The annual Machu family reunion will be Sunday, October 25, 2015, at SPJST Lodge 20, Granger Hall, located at 114 West Davilla Street in Granger, Texas. The reunion honors the memory of Pavel and Rozina (Trlica) Machu, Martin and Anna (Zetak) Machu, and Josef and Rozina (Mazac) Machu, who traveled to Texas in the mass emigration years of the 1800s.

All descendents of these families are most cordially invited to attend.

Registration will begin at 11 a.m.

The noon meal will be served around 12:30 p.m. Fried chicken, sausage, iced tea, coffee, and bread will be furnished, along with paper goods.

Everyone is urged to bring family photos, photo albums, family records, stories, and other memorabilia to share. Children’s activities are being planned for the enjoyment of the kids.

A silent auction will be held to offset the cost of reunion expenses and to

Expression of Sympathy

We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge 17, Novy Tabor, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed lodge sister, DORIS (HITCHCOCK) BREWER, age 81, of Caldwell, who passed away on Sunday, June 21, 2015, at St. Joseph Regional Health Center in Bryan, Texas.

A memorial service commemorating her life was held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 27 at Phillips and Luckey Funeral Home in Caldwell with Reverend Geary O. McDoris Brewer Manus officiating.

The family greeted and received guests from 1 to 2 p.m. prior to the memorial service.

Doris was born July 17, 1933, to Jessie A. Hitchcock and Elenora Phillips Hitchcock in the Providence community of Burleson County. She was the youngest of seven children. On November 24, 1967, she married A.W. Brewer.

After graduating from Caldwell High School in 1950, she moved to Dallas to attend business school.

Shortly thereafter, Doris began her 55 years of employment at Burleson County Courthouse. During this time, Doris held several positions including court reporter, secretary to the county judge, secretary to the county attorney, Deputy District Clerk, and as temporary Justice of The Peace. In 1981, she was appointed District Clerk. She served in that capacity until her retirement on December 31, 2006.

She was a member of SPJST Lodge 17, New Tabor.

Doris also served her community spending many years working with the Burleson County Fair Association, American Cancer Society, and various other organizations. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed providing food for family and church gatherings.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Howard G. and Philip (Bobby) Hitchcock; sister Inez Emerson; brothers-in-law Ernest Emerson and C.A. Grimsley; and sister-in-law Ann Hitchcock.

Survivors include brothers Grabow and Andrew Hitchcock, both of Caldwell; sister Bettye Grimsley of Center;

sister-in-law Joyce Hitchcock; nephews Gerald Grimsley and wife Janet, Phil Hitchcock and wife Donna, and De Hitchcock and wife Shelly; nieces Sarah Hitchcock Robertson and Karlis Hitchcock; great-nephew Joshua Hitchcock; and great-nieces Kodi Lynn and Andi Leigh Hitchcock.

Memorials may be made to Providence Cemetery Association, 5212 CR 236, Caldwell, Texas 77836; or to a charitable organization of your choice.

Funeral arrangements were under the care and direction of Phillips and Luckey Funeral Home of Caldwell.

May she rest in eternal peace and her memory remain with us forever!

Visitation began to the public after 5 p.m. on Sunday, August 30 from the Schwenke-Baumgarten Funeral Home in Schulenburg with the Parish rosary at 7 p.m.

Funeral service for Mrs. Irene Staha, age 89, of Schulenburg, Texas, was held Monday, August 31, 2015, at 10 a.m. from St. Rose Catholic Church in Schulenburg. Interment followed in the St. Rose Catholic Cemetery in Schulenburg.

She was a member of SPJST Lodge 4, Hallettsville.

Irene was born in Lavaca County on March 31, 1926, to Joe and Sophie Rehak of the Vsetin Community. She passed away on August 27, 2015.

Survivors include daughter Barbara Duty and husband Gary of Austin; sons Daryl Staha and wife Karen of Pflugerville and Howard Staha of Pflugerville; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

May our departed sister rest in eternal peace.

State King reports on activities

Dear readers, With the start of a new month, it was time for another meeting. Since it is Czech Heritage Month, we all enjoyed kolaches. We also talked about Make A Difference Day and decided we would all accept the challenge to donate canned goods or do yardwork for the elderly. This is a fun way to get the youth involved and help out in the community. I am looking forward to going to the State Fair to dance beseda and spend time with all of my friends.

Lodge 30, Taiton Youth Club reports on Sept. meeting

The September 12, 2015, meeting of SPJST Lodge 30, Taiton Youth Club was held at Taiton Hall. The meeting was called to order at 5:07 p.m. by Brittany Baker. Grant Bubela led the Pledge of Allegiance and SPJST Youth Club motto and pledge.

A moment of prayer and silence was held. A total of nine members were present.

Old business was discussed regarding District Six Fall Fun Day on September 13. Youth club members were reminded to bring their ornaments for the Christmas ornament contest. New business discussed was that youth should get ready for the Taiton Community Center Fall Festival on October 4. The youth club members will

work the cakewalk and should bring a cake. Also, we will perform our skit “In Your Honor.” The Dozinky Festival will be held in Taiton on October 11, and the youth will bring a cake and work the cakewalk. The next youth club meeting will be October 11 at 10 a.m.

The meeting was adjourned at 5:38 p.m. by Brittany Baker. After the meeting was over, we played outside with our friends.

Dear Readers, I really had fun at Taiton Fall Festival. The turkey and dressing were so delicious. Also, I was excited to win a cake at the cakewalk. It was strawberry with cream cheese icing. Yum! I really liked the train ride outside, too.

Lodge 40 El Campo-Hillje youth crowned queen; invites all to Nov. 8 family day

Sky Garcia is honored and blessed to be SPJST District Six Queen. She was surprised and humbled that classmates of El Campo High School crowned her Homecoming Queen at the homecoming game on Friday, September 18, 2015.

Sky hopes to see all members of SPJST Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje for the family day/prize drawing on Sunday, November 8, 2015, at the Lodge 40 hall from 3 to 6 p.m., and she invites everyone to bring a friend, too!

District One Youth Represent at Burleson County Fair Parade

Dear Readers, On September 19, 2015, District One was well represented at the Burleson County Fair Parade in Caldwell, Texas. Thank you, Melanie and David, for bringing the float and your beautiful car and to District One Director Donnie Victorick for driving the royalty car.

After the parade, District One had a social at Davidson Creek park where we enjoyed pizza, ice cream, and fellowship.

Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Leader reports on October activities

Dear Věstník Readers, We held our last monthly youth club meeting on October 4, 2015.

President Hunter Bartek called the meeting to order. He then asked Justin Kraatz to lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance and recite the club motto.

Present were 45 members and two visitors - James Krog and Lucas del Valle. Birthdays for October are Brady Alexander and Madison Roantes.

Old business included the District Two Fall Fun Day held September 13 at Star Hall; Outdoor Extravaganza on September 19 - thanks again to all who came out and helped in any way; and the District Two outing to Six Flags on October 3 - the weather was perfect, and everyone had a great time.

New Business October 10 and 11 - District Two Beseda Dancers will have an outing and go to the State Fair of Texas. On Sunday, they will dance beseda at the

October 24 - Make a Difference Day. We challenged all members to go help a neighbor or elderly person do yard work or collect canned goods to be donated to the less fortunate.

November 1 - Youth club meeting at 3 p.m. This is a change of time due to the mother lodge meeting at 1 p.m. and election of officers.

Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Club reports on October meeting

We had the last meeting on October 4, 2015. It was called to order at 1:12 p.m. by Hunter Bartek. Justin Kraatz led the Pledge of Allegiance and SPJST youth club motto. We had 45 youth club members in attendance.

There were two guests - James Krog and Lucas del Valle - and 20 adults.

Old business was the District Two Fall Meeting, Outdoor Extravaganza, and Six Flags. We had a lot of fun at all of these events.

New business is the State Fair of Texas where we will dance beseda and Make a Difference Day. Birthdays this month are for Brady Alexander and Madison Roantes.

Next Meeting—November 1 The next meeting is November 1 at 3 p.m.

The meeting ended at 1:43 p.m.

Lodge 17, New Tabor Youth Club Members Participate in Kolache Festival Dear Readers, On Saturday, September 12, 2015, our youth club danced the beseda at the Kolache Festival in Caldwell, Texas. We also baked kolaches with our Gamma (which we love doing!) and entered the kolache bake show. Thank you, Gamma, for helping and teaching us. The Kolache Festival is one of our favorite events.

On October 3, 2015, I went to Six Flags. I rode a lot of rides, and I ate. I got a lot of cool things, and I got candy. There were a lot of zombies, and I only got scared once. It was a lot of fun, and I want to do it again.

Lodge 29, Taylor Youth Club Visits Williamson County Gin

On October 4, 2015, Lodge 29, Taylor Youth Club took a tour of Williamson County Gin in Taylor. I think the adults were just as excited as the youth. It was an interesting process watching the cotton go

through the different places in the gin. The kids especially loved feeling the baled cotton and grabbing handfuls of cotton seeds.

Lodge 185 New Braunfels Youth Club plans Halloween party, membership drive

Lodge 185, New Braunfels Youth Club will hold its membership drive

and Halloween party on Sunday, October 25, 2015. The party begins at 2 p.m. with many carnival booths maned by the Leaders-in-Training (LITs). Booth will include a fish pond, pumpkin bowling, dart game, and spider bean bag toss, just to name a few.

A costume contest for adults and kids will be held at 3 p.m followed by the lodge meetings. A supper provided by the youth club will follow the meet-

2015 - 2016 Youth Club Member Update - Merit Points and Meeting Attendance

First Quarter Merit Points and Meeting Attendance The totals below in the column labeled “Pts” are merit points earned in the June 2015 to May 2016 youth year.

This is total merit points for the 20152016 youth year thusfar. Please see “What is the Merit Point System?” for complete information about the contest.

The number in the column labeled “Mtgs” is the number of meetings each youth club member has attended from June 2015 to May 2015 youth year.

Please see “What is an Active Youth Member?” below to determine number of meetings needed to participate in youth activities.

What is the Merit Point System?

Youth club members earn merit points for participating in SPJST lodge, district and state activities. At the end of the youth year, points are totaled and the youth with the highest points in the youth club receive cash awards.

Contest Dates June 1, 2015 to May 31, 2016

Merit Point Contest Age Divisions Junior—Entering Kindergarten to Age 12 Teen—Age 13 to High School Senior

Rules The youth leader or assistant youth leader is responsible for keeping track of the merit points for each active member of the youth club. The points are to be sent to the State Youth Director on the Quarterly and Merit Point Reports each quarter. Youth club members are also encouraged to keep up with their points and turn them in to the youth leader on a quarterly basis. This system helps both the youth leader and the youth member keep better records of youth participation.

Current, official Quarterly and Merit Point Reports, available from the State Youth Director may only be used in the Merit Point Contest.

The Quarterly and Merit Point Reports sent to the State Youth Director by the youth leader will be kept on file for at

least six months following the conclusion of the contest.

Merit points are earned for only those activities listed under Youth Point Values. An activity can only earn points in one category on the point sheet.

When in doubt about any activity earning points, contact the State Youth Director prior to the contest conclusion.

Everyone will be subject to the same rules in every contest. Failure to comply with any rule shall mean immediate withdrawal.

Merit Point Awards First through fifth place awards are presented in the junior and teen divisions of each youth club. The amount of points that top winners receive in both divisions will determine where the point rankings of the first through fifth winning categories begin. First place winners will be those equal to and 20 points below the top place winner in their age division. Second Place will be 21 to 40 points below the top winner in their age division. Third place will be 41 to 60 points below the top winner in their age division. Fourth place will be 61 to 80 points below the top winner in their age division. Fifth place will be 81 to 100 points below the top winner in their age division.

Awards are presented on the lodge, district, and state levels in the junior and teen merit point contests. At each District YAD, the Home Office presents first through fifth place awards to qualifying junior and teen youth club members. The junior and teen with the most points in each district also receive recognition. In the event of a tie, all who tied for first place will receive the award.* Junior and Teen Point Awards First Place $30 Second Place - $25 Third Place - $20 Fourth Place - $15 Fifth Place $10

What is an Active Youth Member?

A youngster with a current SPJST

insurance certificate may enter the youth program the youth year that he/she will be entering kindergarten.

To be considered active, youth club member must attend a majority (seven) of the monthly meetings during the year. The youth must attend the majority of these meetings at his/her home youth club. In those instances where a lodge does not have a youth club, the youngster may attend adult lodge meetings or the meetings of another youth club. The youngster will be eligible for camp and Youth Achievement Day (YAD) after the completion of his/her kindergarten year. Active youth members must be single and not be pregnant or a parent. The age of the youth on June 1 of the current youth year will be the recognized age in the SPJST Youth Program (camp, YAD, contests, etc.).

The youth year begins June 1 and ends May 31. Youth club eligibility ends when the youth graduates from high school.

Zpráva ze schůze u řádu č. 54 ve Westu, Tx.

Pravidelná čtvrtletní schůze u řádu Jaromír číslo 54 ve Westu ve státě Texasu se konala dne 11. září 2015 za poměrně hojné účasti členstva. Jediná schůze v září se koná až po oslavě Dělnického svátku na druhý pátek v měsíci září, ostatní schůze se konají většinou první pátek čtvrtletně.

Nastalo již mírné ochlazení po několika týdnech stovek a tak přišlo více členů do schůze.

President našeho řádu Freddie Kaluža přivítal všechny přítomné, složili jsme přísahu vlajce a republice, pro kterou stojí a uctili jsme památku našich zemřelých členů a lidí zahynulých v New Yorku, NY. Jmenoval a přivítal nové členy a dvojici, která k nám přešla od jiného řádu.

Tajemnice Janice Kaluža přečetla zápis z minulé schůze, ten byl schválen tak, jak byl čten. Zdůraznila také, že již nyní jsou k dostání stipendia od naší jednoty pro naše studenty.

Finanční tajemnice Mary Lou Mynář přečetla pěknou finanční zprávu, částky na úrocích v bankách pěkně rostou a vcelku se zdá, že náš řád dobře hospodaří.

Freddie Kaluža vysvětil, že sokolská organisace potřebuje dokončit co nejrychleji sokolov nu, aby měli kde cvičit a pak budou pokračovat ve výstavě síně. Budova nové sokolovny je již takřka hotova a chystá se slavnostní otevření někdy v listopadu tohoto roku..

Marcela Vaculík podala zevrubnou zprávu o návštěvě delegace z města Kunovic na Moravě, která se po několik týdnů pohybovala po Texasu a uzavřela sesterskou dohodu s městem Westem. Všichni byli dojati naši pohostinností a zájmem o Moravu a tak můžeme očekávat, že vzájemné návštěvy občanů obou měst se budou množit.

besídka v síni sv. Martina v Tours, Tx. dne 6. prosince, to je první neděli v prosinci od třetí hodiny, pak nám zatančí středoškoláci a bude dostatek času se seznámit s přáteli a pěkný pořad bude následovat jako obvykle.

Výdělek za prodané pojistky uhradí většinu výdajů za besídku.

Dále president Kaluža vysvětil, že bratrské pojištovací organisace musí přikročit k určitým změnám na základě změn, které schváili delegáti na posledním kongresu jednoty a rovněž celoná rodní bratrská organisace protlačuje změny, které mají pomoci menším jednotám ku prospěchu. Ve většině případů takovéto snahy některých organisací a úřadů sjednotí organisace pod jednu kontrolu.

Příští naše schůze se bude konat 6. listopadu 2015 a bude to schůze volební. Je nutno podotknout, že všichni členové by měli navštěvovat naše pravidelné schůze, aby náš řád mohl lépe rozhodovat o důležitých otázkách v činnosti našeho řádu.

President Freddie Kaluža poděkoval Lill Matuš za záchranu naší řádové vlajky po výbuchu a zničení budovy. Poděkoval i Mary Lou Mynář za přípravu večeře a poblahopřál všem, kteří měli za poslední tři měsíce narozeniny. Po ukončení schůze bylo losování a dobrá svačina, při které naši členové setrvali v družné zábavě do večerních hodin.

Wallis church bazaar, festival this Sunday

The Guardian Angel Catholic Church Bazaar and Harvest Festival will be held this Sunday, October 18, 2015. The church is located one block south of Highway 36 on FM 1952 in Wallis, Texas.

Mass is at 7:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. in the beautiful, historical, painted church.

Activities include music throughout the days, many booths, games, rides, auction, prize drawing, and plenty of cold drinks. A barbecue meal will be served.

The church is open for viewing. This is an old church with Gothis alters, painted statues, and Czech paintings on the ceiling. It is a very pretty church.

October is Czech Heritage Month in Texas

Czech Heritage Month is a time to celebrate the rich ethnic heritage of Czech Americans and the many contributions they have made to American culture. To celebrate the month, the Vestnik invites you to participate in these Czech Heritage Month Fun Activities. Several Czech-themed prizes will be awarded in a drawing from all entries received.

Entries must be received by October 21, 2015. Winners will be announced in the October 28 Vestnik.

Folk costumes - kroje - in the Czech Republic are worn at traditional celebrations, festivals, and entertainment events. This tradition is strongest in the eastern part of the country and in Moravia.

Although the same basic articles of clothes constitute as components of kroje, the shapes, colors, designs, and decorations of these components varies greatly. “There are many varieties of kroje in Czechoslovakia,” wrote Ms. Willa Mae Červenka in the June 1992 issue of the Český Hlas.

Kroje serve as expressions of culture and way of living and reflect its period and its region, its land and its people - from plain and simple to lavishly embellished.
