What is SPJST? What is SPJST? We are asked that question quite often. SPJST is a

not-for-profit fraternal benefit society that holds a unique place in history. For more than a century, SPJST lodges have been playing a vital role in communities across Texas. SPJST is a different kind of life insurance provider, securing members’ futures through reliable financial service offerings and giving back to local communities through meaningful volunteer activities.

SPJST was founded by fearless and peace-loving Czech pioneers in La Grange, Texas, in 1897. SPJST was originally chartered as Slovanska Podporujici Jednota Statu Texas. These are Czech words which translate to Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas. On July 1, 2015, SPJST will celebrate its 118th birthday since it first began operations in 1897 in La Grange, Texas. The Home Office was moved to Temple, Texas, in 1953.

SPJST works with a variety of local and statewide service organizations to maximize community impact. In 2014, SPJST members devoted nearly 77,000 service hours to their communities. SPJST also gave more

than $500,000 to deserving service organizations in 2014.

SPJST promotes a wholesome family environment for its members and for the community at large. Car Show Success This week’s Vestnik includes photos and results from the 10th Annual SPJST Car Show and Czech Heritage Celebration held Saturday, May 2 at the very nice SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton Star Hall. What a special day it was with so many vehicles and people attending the event! Thanks to all of our volunteers who helped that day and the weeks leading up to the event. We couldn’t have hosted this event without these amazing people. Thanks to the donors who gave so generously. We appreciate the support. And, special thanks to the car show participants and vendors who were the stars of the day!

SPJST will hold an eight-hour Universal Life continuing education class on Saturday, July 18, 2015, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Lodge Incentive Guidelines

The 2015 Lodge Incentive Guidelines will include membership program incentives and be based upon premium income generated by the lodges. The formula for calculating the Enhanced Premium Refund is:

1. $1.00 for each paid-up certificate; and 2. 2.80% of the lodge’s annual earned premium.

To receive the Enhanced Premium Refund, lodges must meet the following three-point criteria:

1. Hold regular lodge meetings in accordance with Article 50 of the SPJST By-Laws and offer a wellrounded fraternal program.

2. Return all requested paperwork on time by the due date.

3. Submit regular letters/photos to the Vestnik.

Under old business, a report was given on the successful Join Hands Day plant sale held at the SPJST Car Show and Czech Heritage Celebration at Lodge 47, Seaton on May 2. Members were thanked for donating plants and working the booth that day. Proceeds benefited the Czech Heritage Museum and SPJST Education and Nature Center with each receiving $203. A big thank you to Louise Keil at Breslau Ponds and Plants for her assistance and to the people who purchased plants that day. It was a fun and

interesting day!

FAC Annie reported on upcoming SPJST activities.

Rest Home Bingo Chairman Evelyn Holy reported 34 residents were in attendance at the monthly bingo. Assisting her were Vicky Zak, Gayenell Chudej, and Lillie Balusek.

Plans for Family Day in August will be discussed at the June 14 meeting.

Lodge Karel Jonáš, No. 28, East Bernardhonors longtime members

Dear Members, We are back to the regular schedule. Lodge Karel Jonáš No. 28, East Bernard will hold its June meeting on the second Sunday, the 14th, at 12 noon, in the Community Room of the East Bernard Branch Library at 746 Clubside Drive.

The agenda will be open to business needing immediate attention along with regular reports.

As to the fare for the fraternal hour luncheon, it will be standard.

On the 17th of May, the lodge held its annual 50-, 75-, and age 96 honoree pin awards meeting. Only one 50-year pin recipient Lillian Kelner Neely attended, and representative Bernice Pribyl was present for her son Mark Lynn Pribyl. Also attending the occasion were Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek and District Six Director Karen Kaspar. The 75-year pin recipient Emil W. Faltisek was unable to attend due to living a good distance away. The following recipients were “no shows” - some living a good distance away, but a major portion living in East Bernard, which included 50year pin honorees Janell Marie Austin, James C. Barta, Desire D. Harris, Jeffery Hlavinka, Sally Koym, Lori Ann Sliva, Susan E. Valigura, and Albert S. Zahradnik.

Routine reports were accepted as given.

The fare was roast beef dinner with the usual trimmings. As expected, it was good.

A very special thanks goes to Jeanette Kaminsky for getting the meeting room ready with the tables and chairs being in place along with decorations on the tables.

Also, we wish to thank President Vanicek and Director Kaspar for taking the time to visit with us. This being one of the wettest months of May on record in Texas.

Commentary It is a shame that those living within the confines of East Bernard who were 50-year pin recipients did not show up. They did miss a good meal and a short meeting.

SPJST designates, presents scholarship in memory of J.R. Kubena

Dear Brothers and Sisters, In recent weeks, SPJST lodge presidents, district directors, and other SPJST leaders have had the honor of presenting SPJST scholarships and leadership grants to deserving high school seniors and undergraduates. A total of 62 $1,000 scholarships were awarded in April. Since the inception of the SPJST Scholarship Program in 1983, more than 2,100 scholarships valued at more than $1.5 million have been presented.

Last Friday, I had the privilege of joining Lodge 1, Fayetteville Treasurer Ronnie Pflughaupt with one of those presentations at Bellville High School. The occasion was the presentation of the first J.R. Kubena Memorial Scholarship, presented to graduating senior Rebecca Noska. In addition to serving as the mayor of Fayetteville, coJ.R. Kubena presenter Ronnie Pflughaupt has the distinction of being J.R. Kubena’s grandson.

What’s more, Ronnie was the sales agent who enrolled Rebecca as an SPJST member when she was just a toddler.

“It was an honor to present the SPJST J.R. Kubena Scholarship to Becca. I couldn’t be more pleased that she was selected,” says Ronnie.

“I’ve known this bright young lady and her family for a long time and know she’s going to go far.”

Rebecca will be attending Texas State University in the fall to pursue a degree in nursing. “Ever since I was little, going to college was one of my

goals,” she says. “Helping others and working together as a team is something that drives my interests and about which I am very passionate.”

The J.R. Kubena Scholarship was designated in the April 2015 SPJST Supreme Lodge meeting in honor of John R. Kubena, who served as SPJST Secretary from the organization’s inception in 1897 until 1938.

Brother Kubena, who helped spearhead the formation of SPJST in Texas, has been widely referred to as the “Daddy of SPJST.” Brother Kubena was a real go-getter! For 42 years, he managed the business affairs of SPJST from his general store in Fayetteville. A civic leader with a keen sense of obligation to others, Brother Kubena served as a member of the Texas House of Representatives for three terms — in 1903, 1905, and 1907. He also served for a term as mayor of Fayetteville. He was also a member of the governing body — today known as the Board of Governors — at what was then Texas A&M College. He was an advocate for the Democratic

Party and was President Woodrow Wilson’s campaign manager in Central Texas. As a further testament to his business acumen, J.R. Kubena served as a director of Texas State Bank in New Ulm and as treasurer of Fayetteville State Bank. He also served as vice president and director of Gulf State Bank of Houston. In addition to his leadership role within SPJST, he was also an official in the Pythian Knights, Woodmen of the World, and Sons of Hermann.

Brother Kubena was killed in a tragic auto-pedestrian accident while on SPJST business in Galveston on May 3, 1938.

SPJST marks the 118th anniversary of the establishment of our great fraternal order on July 1, 2015. Our gratitude goes out to our founders — leaders like J.R. Kubena and others — for their devoted efforts helping to build the Society we know and love today.

Lodge 79 Corpus Christi celebrates Mother’s Day

Lodge 79, Corpus Christi enjoyed a meal of fried chicken and all the trimmings furnished by the lodge on Sunday, May 17, 2015. Our lodge celebrated a belated Mother’s Day and upcoming Memorial Day. The meeting was called to order by President Mark Rebecek who led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. We had a moment of silence for deceased member Era Maudie Wallek. All officers were present except Youth Leader Gerilyn Donnell. We had 34 members and guests present. Secretary Virginia Rebecek handed out gift cards to all mothers for Mother’s Day furnished by the lodge.

proved.

Financial report was given by Treasurer Frank Sacky which was approved.

Communications were read by Secretary Virginia Rebecek. We had one death claim, and we welcome two new sales agents - Cynthia Gomez and Darel Jaramillo. Welcome to our lodge! President Rebecek read a thank you note from Make a Wish Foundation. They also sent our lodge a certificate.

Fraternal activities coordinator’s report was given by Vice President/FAC Jerry Sijansky. He congratulated all mothers attending the meeting. He gave a history of when Mother’s Day was founded. Dates to remember include May 22 to 24 - National Polka Festival in Ennis and May 25 - Memorial Day will be celebrated and to remember all who gave their lives for our country. Jerry thanked Dorothy McCoy for decorating the tables in red, white, and blue. Jerry stated that

the end of summer getaway is just around the corner, and all should make motel reservations early. Tell the motel you are with SPJST. Jerry also has referral cards if anyone needs them.

There was no unfinished business.

Under new business, Judy Majek suggested our monthly donation go to CASA home for abused children.

Assistant Youth Leader Cyndi Duff gave the youth club report. They had five members and five guests present.

The youth had a short meeting because their plans are to go bowling on a weekend. Parents will be contacted on the date.

Birthday for May was Ruth Marek on the 26th. “Happy Birthday” was sung to this member.

Member Judy Majek donated several plants to be given away as a special drawing for Mother’s Day. Thank you, Judy!

Twenty-five dollar door prizes were won by Virginia Rebecek and Jesse Porras.

SPJST Lodge 142, Houston held its regular monthly meeting on Sunday, May 17, 2015, at Lodge 88, Houston Annex Building. President Keith Kieschnick called the meeting to order at 2 p.m. after all 29 present members enjoyed the delicious lunch. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Grace Owens. Secretary Alice Jochen called the roll of officers. She then read the April minutes which stood approved.

All officers and committee reports were given. We welcomed visitor Jack Dowling.

Under new business, we discussed the Corpus Christi Get Away in August. Please make your reservations.

Oldest male present was Keith Kieschnick; oldest female was Cynthia Payne; youngest child was Kaylee Kieschnick. We had no winner in the capsule prize drawing. For the June drawing, we will look for a winner.

Birthdays in May - Jack Manchack on the 24th and Joyce Molensoky on the 12th.

SPJST Lodge 191, Lufkin regular third Friday night dance, June 19, 2015, will feature Glenn Lenderman and Friends with Chris Powell on drums and probably George Scogin on saxophone. So make plans now to attend this dance. The theme will be “Red Solo Cup” (Let’s have a party!).

The lodge could not make it if it were not for the good cooks that bring food for every dance. You are appreciated so very much.

Next Meeting—June 15 The next lodge meeting will be June 15 at the lodge. It starts at 7 p.m., and usually lasts only about an hour.

Members, please attend these meetings.

Nathan Ham and the Country Boys did an excellent job of playing the music for the May dance. Nathan does a good job of playing the trumpet, and all of the other guys do an excellent job of playing and singing also.

The winner of the 50-50 drawing for the May dance was Sarah Oliver, and she chose to give it back to the lodge. Thanks, Sarah. The winners of the free dance tickets to any dance but New Year’s were Shirley Fatheree and Velma Van Shoebrook. Congratulations to all of the winners, and thanks to all of the people that buy tickets for these drawings each month.

Also, thank you to Ruth Welch for the lovely decorations for the “Covered Wagon Chow Down.” Hosts were Ruth Welch, Doyle and Sarah Oliver, and George and Pat Scogin.

All of you car enthusiasts . . . the SPJST Car Show was held at Lodge 47, Seaton on Saturday, May 2. There were almost 200 cars that were shown.

It was a great day for a car show. They gave out first, second, and third trophies for each category. Our very own George Scogin won first place in his category with a C4 1985 Corvette.

Next year, I will try to put it in the newsletter before the car show.

SPJST Supports Bleiblerville-Nelsonville VFD

Bobbie Lee Friday and Helen Boyd continue to get better. Bobbie Lee is still in Pine Crest, and Helen is back to grooming small dogs.

A work day was set for Saturday, June 6 at 9 a.m. for the lodge. All help will be appreciated. New ceiling fans need to be installed; the tables and chairs need to be cleaned; tile needs to be put on the floor where there is plywood; and anything else that needs to be done. Pizza will be served to the work crew. If you can, please come out and help.

Lodge 200 Bruceville-Eddy member invites all to fundraiser

Please help raise the roof! Taylor Hall in Bruceville-Eddy is in need of building and roof repairs. Taylor Hall is a facility where SPJST Lodge 200, Bruceville-Eddy holds its monthly meetings and where senior citizens go to eat lunch; it is a wonderful center for the community to have reunions, meetings, or family gatherings.

The abundance of rain is unbelievable, and we personally have never, ever seen it continue day after day for so many days. We’ve stopped counting. And, for those who live in areas prone to flooding, we offer our prayers for your safety and well being. It’s just devastating.

The Ladies Circle meeting of SPJST Lodge 92, Fort Worth took place on May 12, 2015, with the threat of rain which became a downpour— not a threat—before the meeting was over. We began with reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. President Cathy Simmank welcomed 54 members, men, and several repeat guests who were attending.

utes were dispensed with due to the surprise celebration of Hermina Cihacek’s 100th birthday. She was presented with a hat, flowers, a birthday cake, and cards with money in each of them and sung to. She was reluctant to talk about herself at first, but President Cathy interviewed her, and she finally opened up a bit. Her advice for her longevity is to “stay away from doctors.” She still drives and lives alone, is healthy, and should be with us for many more years. She is a jewel in our organization, and we love having her with us each month. Her carrot salad is to die for.

The financial report was given by Margaret Lamance, and as sunshine chairman, she sent cards to the family of Mary Ann Kozel whom we lost last month; Evelyn Scaff on the loss of her son-in-law; little Charlie Davidson on his hand surgery; and Darlene Tompkins on her illness. We also learned that Doris Maple had been in the hospital several times recently. Thank goodness she is better, and we were happy to have her attending this day.

Several items were discussed under new business. One of particular importance was the suggestion that we hold a silent auction. Everyone agreed it was a good idea and so be on the lookout for a new or gently used item to bring to the meeting in July. Marlene Bass and Theresa Clay will take care of details. The focus of our June meeting will be our fathers. At that time, we will honor them as we did our mothers so please be prepared with stories and pictures of them.

Hostesses for the meeting were Betty Loyd, Chelsey Davidson, Cherie Price, and brother David. The meal was outstanding . . . what more can one say. Fifty or so dishes to choose from . . . oh my goodness!

The lovely ladies born in May were recognized. We sang to Sunny Kercho, Doris Overstreet, Didi Soares, and a second time to Hermina. Happy birthday greetings also go to Magda Kronenberger, Juanita Nunez, and Andrew Tesar. We wish you a wonderful year ahead.

The meeting proceeded with 10 lucky ladies winning door prizes.

There was a corsage, picture frame, hot pads, hand lotion, picture album, an organizer, umbrella, and soaps . . . great prizes for a rainy day.

The final topic of the day was all about “Mothers.” Several of the ladies brought items that belonged to their moms and told stories about their moms. Lydia Alholm’s mother came to Texas in a wagon, Caroline O’Brien was wearing her mom’s jewelry, Lorinda Manasco showed pieces of her mother’s tatting, Kitty Rippin wore a hat made for her by her mom; Teresa Clay brought her mother’s crucifix and prayer book; and Ann Schneider showed a thimble from her mom’s collection along with her rosary. Theretta Praslicka had on a jacket of her mother’s and brought a picture of her mother wearing the same jacket about 10 years ago. Also, there were many ladies that brought pictures of their moms and shared them among themselves. These were sweet memories for each of them, and we were happy that they shared them with us.

Before closing the meeting, the oldest and youngest mothers present were recognized. Lydia Alholm was the oldest, and Chelsey Davidson was the youngest. They were presented with flowers for those designations.

The blessing for lunch was given, and bingo followed later.

Weeklong rain delays Fort Hood memorial completion

Despite the significant amount of rain Killeen has seen over the past few weeks, construction on the November 5, 2009, Fort Hood Shooting Memorial is still inching toward completion.

Connie Kuehl, a member of the committee charged with raising funds for the memorial, said the rain delayed construction “a little bit.”

“We’re ready now, but we have to wait on everything to dry out. Once we get the foundation done, the steel is going to go up really fast,” she said.

“We want to have it done this summer, but we’re saying we will have it completed by the anniversary date.

“We want to have it done and landscaped and ready for the dedication.”

The memorial committee formed in 2010 to spearhead fundraising efforts for the structure, which is located between the Killeen Civic and Conference Center and the Shilo Inn on W.S. Young Drive.

Kuehl said the sculptures are completed, the granite is being engraved, steel has been ordered, and the sleeve to hold the flagpole is installed.

Construction crews are currently waiting on the ground to dry out to finish the foundation.

The memorial, which will honor the 13 killed and more than 30 wounded in the 2009 on-post shooting, features a circular, open-air pavilion with 13 black granite columns.

Each column will be inscribed with a victim’s name and likeness with a bronze sculpture representing aspects of that victim’s interests and personality atop.

“It’s exciting and encouraging to see everything in place and being close to having this done,” Kuehl said.

She said the committee needs about $20,000 more to cover the upkeep and

maintenance of the project.

Committee members also plan to add decorative limestone around the perimeter of the structure and cameras to prevent vandalism.

“We don’t want to wall it off. We want it to be visited at any time day or night, but we don’t want anyone vandalizing it,” she said.

The committee also is seeking donations of airline miles and hotel rooms to get the shooting victims’ families to Killeen for the dedication of the memorial in November.

S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living Community Hosts Mother’s Day Celebration

On Friday, May 8, 2015, at S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living Community in Taylor, mothers and their daughters shared a special time together in celebration of Mother’s Day. The ladies enjoyed a special menu prepared just for this celebration. Irene

Michna shared stories of the joys of being a mother, and the ladies joined in playing fun games. Each one took home a beautiful jewelry holder as a reminder of this time shared together.

10th Annual SPJST Car Show and Czech Heritage Celebration

We extend sincere thanks and appreciation to all of this year’s car show participants. A total of 199 of the most awesome vehicles in the Central Texas area were displayed at SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton Star Hall on Saturday, May 2. It was a beautiful, sunny, perfect car show day! And, the hall and grounds were filled with hundreds and hundreds of spectators throughout the day.

A special “Czech Heritage Celebration” was included in this year’s event and included several folklife demonstrations hosted by the Czech Heritage Museum. District Two youth to host summer pool party June 19 in Temple

Dear Members, Summer is here . . . the best time of the year for our SPJST youth activities! The first summer District Two activity is our annual summer pool party which will be held on Friday night, June 19, 2015, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Walker Pool, 2615 North Third Street in Temple, only blocks away from the Mayborn Center.

Drinks and paper goods will be provided. Each family is asked to bring snacks to share.

Czech Kids’ Fun Day set for June 27 in Caldwell

Are you interested in passing along your Czech heritage to your children, grandchildren, or great-grandchildren?

Texas State Genealogical Society (TCGS) is interested in doing the same and is sponsoring its first Czech Kids’ Fun Day in conjunction with its adult event “Growing Your Genealogy.”

Both programs will be held at the Caldwell Civic/Visitors Center on Saturday, June 27, 2015 beginning at 9 a.m. Registration will begin at 8 a.m.

The children’s event ends at 3 p.m. while the adult event concludes at 4 p.m.

Mary A. O’Brien will conduct the Czech Kids’ Fun Day for children ages kindergarten to age eight years. Seating is limited and may not be available the day of the event, so early registration is encouraged. If paid and postmarked on or before June 10, children’s registration is $20, which includes a pizza lunch and snacks.

After June 10, registration is $25.

Mary’s husband, Eugene O’Brien, will be presenting at the adult “Growing Your Genealogy” event, speaking on “Writing and Publishing Your Family History Book.” A profile on this very talented family appears in the Czech section of this week’s Vestnik.

While children are enjoying their activities, adults will participate in “Growing Your Genealogy,” with five sessions in addition to Mr. O’Brien’s:

It is encouraged that you register early so we may accurately plan for lunch, which is included in the registration fee. Adults registering with a postmark on or before June 10 will pay $35 (TCGS members) or $40 (non-members). After June 10, TCGS members will pay $40 and non-members $45. Everyone registering at the door on June 27 will be charged $50.

A program almost too good to be true: one for adults—one for children!

Expression of Sympathy

We, the members of SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of RAYMOND ZAPLETAL. Raymond Zapletal, age 79, passed away in Ennis on May 26, 2015. He was born on March 1, 1936, in Ennis to Willie and Leda (Patak) Zapletal. He graduated from Saint John High School and married Patricia Muehlstein on June 7, 1958, in Raymond Zapletal Abbott, Texas.

Raymond was member of Saint John Nepomucene Catholic Church; KJT No. 35; SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis; and Sokol of Ennis. He was past president (also one of the founders) of the National Polka Festival, SPJST Lodge 25, and United Way of Ennis. He retired from Leggett and Platt in 1998 after 42 years. His passions were polka music, gardening, Texas Rangers, and his grandchildren.

He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years Patricia (Pat); children Susan Zapletal Wheeler and husband Pat, Pamela Zapletal Hamilton and husband Jay, Karen Zapletal and Phillip Graham, Daniel Zapletal and wife Yvonne, Michelle Zapletal Slovak and husband David, and Andrew Zapletal and Quinn Gadberry; grandchildren Madalyn and Joshua Zapletal, Josef and Isabella Slovak, Patrick Wheeler, and Taigan Arredondo; brother Fred Zapletal and wife Judy of Ennis; and sister-in-law Betty Zapletal of Carthage, Missouri.

He was preceded in death by parents Willie and Leda Zapletal; grandparents Frank and Frances Zapletal, and Frank and Mary Patak; and brother Henry Zapletal.

The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. with a rosary at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 28 at Boze-MitchellMcKibbin Funeral Home in Ennis.

Mass of Christian burial was at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 29 at Saint John Nepomucene Catholic Church with Father Henry Drozd as celebrant. Entombment followed at Saint Joseph Cemetery in Ennis. Serving as honorary pallbearers were Vernon Tallant, Joe Valek, Kenneth Mikula, Nick

We, the members of SPJST Lodge 151, Wharton, wish to express our sincere and heartfelt sympathy to the family of LYDIA G. MATUSEK Lydia G. Matusek, age 92, of Wharton died Monday, May 25, 2015, in Wharton, Texas. She was born on April 23, 1923, in Wharton, the daughter of Anton Louis and Mary Kubena Matusek.

Lydia Matusek Lydia was a lifelong resident of Wharton. She graduated from high school prior to attending St. Joseph’s in Houston for her nursing education. She worked for many years at Caney Valley Hospital, prior to its replacement by Gulf Coast Regional Medical Center. She was a member of Catholic Daughters, and was active with SPJST Lodge 151, Wharton. She was recognized as a 75year member in 2014. She was extremely proud of her Czech heritage, visiting the Czech Republic several times.

Visitation was Friday, May 29 at St. John’s in Hungerford from 5 to 9 p.m., with a rosary at 7 p.m. Funeral service was at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 30 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Hungerford with Father Charles Dwomoh officiating. Burial followed at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.

Survivors include her sister Viola Dworaczyk of Pearland; brother Bennie and wife Barbara Matusek of Deer

Park; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were her nieces and nephews.

Funeral service was under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

In Memory of Fritz Nemecek

Alfred “Fritz” Nemecek, age 100, of Austin, passed away late Sunday morning, May 24, 2015, in Austin.

Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at 10 a.m.

Saturday, May 30 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church of the Assumption in West with Reverend Paul Hudson as celebrant.

Burial followed at St. Mary’s Ceme- Alfred Nemecek tery.

Fritz was born November 3, 1914, in West, the son of Rudolph and Ludmila (Smajstrla) Nemecek. He attended schools in West and was a 1931 graduate of West High School. On February 15, 1939, he was united in marriage to Virginia Moucka in West.

Virginia preceded him in death on November 6, 2010. Fritz served his country in the United States Army during World War II. He was the manager of the Zarsky Lumber Company in McAllen for 40 years until he retired in 1981. Fritz was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Austin. He was also a member of SPJST Lodge 54, West and Our Lady of Sorrows Men’s Club in McAllen. He enjoyed woodworking, camping, and barbecuing.

Fritz was also preceded in death by his parents; brother Joseph H. “Pete” Nemecek; and sisters Mamie Archer Urbanovksy, Rudie Grimm, Georgia Cocek, and Hattie Piehl.

Survivors include son Fred Nemecek and wife Melissa of Pflugerville; daughters Dianne Conner and husband Phillip of Winnsboro, Freda Thomas of Slidell, Louisiana, Rosemary Roseland and husband Joe of Mission, Karen Nemecek and husband Lane Ply of Elfin Cove, Alaska, and Nancy Dennis and husband Tim of Austin; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-

Donna was a customer service representative for the City of Waco. She also worked for the State of Texas in Dallas. Donna enjoyed fishing, camping, gardening, and taking care of animals. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Gholson and SPJST Lodge 54, West.

Joseph Calvin Schwartz, age 89, of Garden City passed away Thursday, January 8, 2015, in Stanton, Texas.

Rosary was held Sunday, January 11 at 5 p.m. at St. L a w r e n c e Catholic Church.

Funeral mass celebrating Joe’s life was on Monday, Joseph Schwartz January 12 at 10 a.m. at St. Lawrence Catholic Church.

Interment followed at St. Lawrence Catholic Cemetery.

Joe was born June 20, 1925, in Miles to Ida (Klein) and Ernest Schwartz. He attended school at Fairview and later served two years in the Merchant Marines. On September 18, 1950, he married the love of his life Rose Marie Kadlacek at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Wall. They began their family while living in the Paint Rock and Fairview areas before moving west to Garden City in 1967.

He was a member of SPJST Lodge 160, San Angelo.

Joe served on the school board at Fairview, was on the board of the Glasscock County ASCS office as well as the FHA board, St. Lawrence Men’s Society, and the Church Committee. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and Gun Club.

In 1988, he was named as Glasscock County’s Outstanding Conservation Farmer of the Year. He was very proud to be a farmer and rancher. He leaves quite a legacy for his children and grandchildren.

Joe loved hunting deer and doves and especially spending time with his hunting friends from Midland. Fishing was also a passion of his. As a young man, he enjoyed fishing at Garner Dam in San Angelo and later at his own stock tank not far from his house.

Every year, he had the biggest garden in St. Lawrence and delighted in sharing it with his family and friends. He and Rose especially enjoyed day trips to the casino in Hobbs.

Another favorite pasttime was playing dominoes. It was not unusual for he and Rose to host a spur-of-the-moment domino party with whomever was around. Their home was always open to guests for lunch or for a glass of tea while Joe told his many stories of interest. Married for 64 and one half years, Joe and Rose were constant companions. He will be missed by

many.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents; daughter Mary Kay Halfmann; brother Walter Schwartz; sister Beatrice Socha and husband Laddie; sister-in-law Ruby Schwartz; and brother-in-law Victor Matthiesen.

In Memory of Ella Mikeska

Ella Marie Mikeska, 78, of Arlington, Texas, passed May 31, 2015, peacefully at home surrounded by her loved ones.

She was originally from Malone, Texas, daughter of Frederic Ben and Ella Ender. She was a woman of worth, Ella Mikeska strength, love for all, and a speaker of truth. She was a faithful wife of 59 years to Raymond John Mikeska.

She is survived by husband Raymond; daughter Cynthia Boyd Mikeska; son Randall Mikeska; daughter Janis Mikeska Reed; daughter Michelle Mikeska; son David Mikeska; grandson Brandon Boyd; and granddaughters Tara Boyd Moore, Lauren Reed, Chelsea Reed, and Rachel Reed; and great-granddaughters Madeleine Moore and Hadley Martin.

Ella held the office of vice president at SPJST Lodge 183, Arlington. She was a member of St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church.

Funeral service was held at 10 a.m. on Friday, June 5 at St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church in Arlington. Visitation was Thursday, June 4 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Skyvue Funeral Home in Mansfield.

In Memory of BJ Havlak

BJ Havlak, age 77, passed away Tuesday, April 21, 2015, in Fort Worth, Texas. Funeral mass was held at 1 p.m., Friday, April 24 at St. Ann Catholic Church in Burleson. Interment was at Godley Cemetery.

Visitation was BJ Havlak held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday, April 23 at Mountain Valley Funeral Home.

BJ was born March 21, 1938, in San Angelo to Frank and Mary (Bubenik) Havlak.

He was preceded in death by daughter Kristie Havlak.

“All Things Czech” to feature story of Lidice June 16 in Temple

The Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center continues its “All Things Czech” lecture series on the topic of the Reinhard Heydrich and the town of Lidice, Czech Republic. The lecture will mark the official opening of a new Lidice exhibit at the museum.

Sarah Wilhelm will be the featured speaker at the event beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 16 at the museum, located at 119 West French Avenue in Temple. Wilhelm is a 2015 graduate of Austin College in Sherman, where she majored in theater and history.

During World War II, Heydrich was a high-ranking German Nazi official, who Hitler called “the man with the iron heart.” Heydrich masterminded the Holocaust when he chaired the 1942 Wannsee Conference, which finalized plans for the extermination of all European Jews. He was chief of the secret police and was also Reichprotecktor of Bohemia and Moravia, the highest ranking officer in then Czechoslovakia.

Of the project to “Germanize” Czechoslovakia, Heydrich said, “Deprive the people of their national consciousness; treat them as a tribe and not a nation; dilute their national pride; do not teach their history; propagate their language as inferior; imply they have a cultural void; emphasize their customs are primitive; and dismiss independence as a barbaric anomaly.”

It is the story of a daring assassination attempt and his subsequent death, which resulted in Hitler ordering one of the most brutal retaliations of the war. However, the story of Lidice demonstrates the indomitable strength of the human spirit.

High schools, individuals invited to enroll now in online Czech classes

Dear Friends, Greetings from the SPJST Home Office.

I am writing to share information about a Czech language program that you may wish to communicate to high schools as well as to others in your area. Blinn College is seeking to make Czech classes available to high school students across the state through an online program in partnership with Texas school districts. The classes would also be open adults with a computer and high-speed Internet access.

I recently had the opportunity to visit with the organizers and as a result of that visit, prepared a summary article outlining the basis of the program and how it could enhance the learning opportunities of young people and adults in your area who may have an interest in studying the Czech language.

Please review the article and share it with the curriculum coordinator or other high school officials in your area. The version of the Czech language that many of us who are Texans of Czech ancestry grew up hearing and speaking — represents a blend of 19th century Moravian dialects, literary Czech and English words modified to something that is uniquely "Texas Czech.”

A recent paper by Lida Cope, a Czech linguist and director of the Texas Czech Legacy Project based at the University of Texas at Austin, focuses on the endangered Texas Czech dialect. While many Texans of Czech ancestry view their “heritage language” as important to their identity, Cope’s research reveals that they are sometimes hesitant to commit personal dedication to the study and teaching of the language. United States, a “heritage language” is any language other than English that is spoken by an individual, family or community.

According to Ms. Cope, vocal support and encouragement from the leaders of our well-respected Texas Czech organizations is one of the keys to large-scale revitalization of the Czech language in Texas. One of the ways that we — as individuals and as representatives of our various organizations — can make a positive impact is by encouraging local school districts and individuals to take advantage of online Czech classes that are being planned for this fall through Blinn College.

Based in Brenham, Texas, Blinn College is seeking to make online Czech classes available to high school students across the state through a program in partnership with Texas school districts. The classes classes would also be open to adults with a computer and high-speed Internet access. Before the classes are offered, program organizers must first establish that significant interest exists in taking the classes. For that reason, it is important that schools and other individuals who are interested express their interest by June 30.

A Practical Way to Learn the Czech Language “Distance learning classes offer high school students a practical way to learn the Czech language,” says Thadious Polasek, director of the Schulenburg Public Library, who will be the course instructor and leading the live sessions from the Blinn College campus in Schulenburg. Mr. Polasek, who is a fifth-generation Texan of Czech ancestry, received his bachelor’s degree in Czech from the University of Texas at Austin and his master’s degree in Library Science from Southern Mississippi University.

His post graduate work with Charles University in Prague was conducted via distance learning.

“It doesn’t matter where in Texas you happen to be,” he says, “If there’s a group of young people who want to learn Czech, we want to deliver that instruction.”

which will enable the young people to earn high school as well as college credits,” says Mr. Polasek, who received the Texas Exes Outstanding Teacher Award for his performance in the Flatonia Independent School District.

There is no required number of students that a class has to have in order to link into the network. As long as the school district is willing to host the distance learning Czech classes, even a group as small as one or two students may join the network. Depending on the size of class, the school district may want to assign a proctor to monitor classroom activities.

Just like conventional high school language classes, distance learning classes have deadlines for turning in assignments and doing tests. “When tests are taken, a proctor is required to be present on the site of the receiving class,” says Mr. Polasek, who has been instructing district learning classes in Czech for more than a decade.

High school administrators who are interested in offering the distance learning Czech classes through Blinn College are encouraged to contact Becky Garlick, Blinn-Schulenburg campus director by June 30 for more information at bgarlick@blinn.edu or by phone at 979-743-5222. “We are anxious to work collaboratively with Texas high schools to provide the distance learning Czech classes,” says Ms. Garlick. And, as previously noted, the program is also open to adults with a computer and high-speed internet access wishing to take the class.

Your part in helping to introduce the Czech classes in a high school near you could be as simple as providing a copy of this article to the high school administrators, along with a personal note from you, encouraging them to take the next step and contacting Ms. Garlick about offering the classes in your community.

The King’s Ride Jízda králů

Spring (May) brings to the villages the time-honored celebration known as the The Ride of Kings - Jízda Králů.

This showy folk ceremony with its ride on gaily bedizened horses is still observed now in only a few villages in South-Eastern and Central Moravia, in the ethnographical regions of Slovácko (Moravian Slovakia). It is a direct continuation of the old Whitsun customs, once observed in a number of European countries. Historical reports prove their existence in the Middle Ages.

The Whitsun King’s ceremony in Bohemia, Moravia, and Silesia took place traditionally on Whit Monday. It was initiated by the younger generation, aged between 13 and 20 years.

From the end of the 19th century, when the stimulus for holding the Kings’ Ride - Jízda Králů - “chasing the king,” began to emanate also from clubs and other organizations (in the post-war period also from the cultural sections of National Committees and folk song and dance ensembles), the age-range has moved upwards. Only the King, in the spirit of the tradition, is selected from boys aged between 9 and 13.

The King’s Ride main attraction aside from feasting and drinking - is a Sunday morning processional featuring young men on horseback, some of them chanting, some of them wielding swords, all of them “protecting” a ceremonial king, a young man whose face is hidden by embroidered ribbons.

The main participants in the King’s Ride procession on horseback are the king and his aides, standard-bearers, heralds, collectors, and thankers. The King may not speak nor even smile.

For this reason, he holds a rose between his lips throughout the ceremony.

Jízda Králů takes place seriously and ceremoniously. This is also helped by the ceremonial national costume: The king and his “aides” dress in the elaborate women’s folk dress that is typical of the region (in some villages only the king is dressed in this way).

The king places one hand on his hip and rides a white horse; the aides carry swords. Riding horses decorated with ribbons, the procession continues around the village and is led by an announcer (herald) and the boys go around the town and chant witty verses to celebrate their king and call out the words of an ancient message. They also make rhyming statements about outsiders watching the ceremony and ask for gifts on his behalf. Spectators are then expected to slip coins into their riding boots!

Apart from the procession of lads in national costumes on gaily decorated horses, there are numerous performances by folk groups, exhibitions, and other cultural events.

Jízda Králů is an historic occasion, the roles for which are passed down through the generations. Even the traditional finery for both the men and horses is painstakingly sewn by local women in the representative patterns of their village.

Jízda Králů is observed, but not always annually, in villages around the towns of Uherské Hradište, Uherský Brod, Kyjov, Ždanice, Kroměříž, Strážnice, in the villages of Haná to the North of Olomouc, Skoronice near Kyjov, and in Vlčnov, where it has been celebrated without interruption for more than 200 years.

Laterna Magika is a unique mime theater in Europe, Prague. Its start began at the Expo ‘58 in Brussels. The plays are internationally understandable although they are mute. Performances are a combination of dance, film and black theater. Laterna Magika is well known tourist destination of modern Czech theater.

The director and scene-maker introduced their original theatrical form in Brussels and named it Laterna Magika (Magic Lantern). The essence of the project lies in the connection of film and theater, in a kind of “new media show.” They used poly-screen (parallel projection on more screens), synchronized individual theatrical and film elements, and organized their inner rhythm into one “multi-genre” performance.

Program moved into Prague after end’s exhibition, to establish a new experimental scene. Laterna Magika was in National Theater at first (in 195860), later in other Prague theatres.

Theater Laterna Magika was named afterwards a technical treatment magic lantern.

The magic lantern (laterna magica) is a type of image projector screening pictures on sheets of glass. It is used for education and entertainment.

In magic lantern is a concave mirror in back of a light source to direct light as much as possible through a small glass oblong—a “lantern slide”—from which straws are coursed into a lens at the front of the apparatus. Lens optimally focuses the plane of the slide to the right distance of the projection screen (a white wall or a linen), and so form an enlarged image of the slide on the screen.

For magic lantern’s original inventor is considered Christian Huygens with his original device in the late 1650s. Venetian engineer Giovanni Fontana also made a lantern projecting a demon’s image in fifteenth century. It was mostly used by illusionists to project images, making them appear or disappear, transforming from one scene into another one, animating usually inanimate objects, or even making the illusion of coming deceased people back to the life.
