Building Bridges Once upon a time, two brothers who lived on adjoining farms fell

into conflict. It was the first serious rift in 40 years of farming side by side, sharing machinery, and trading labor and goods as needed without a hitch.

Then the long collaboration fell apart. It began with a small misunderstanding, and it grew into a major difference, and finally it exploded into an exchange of bitter words followed by weeks of silence.

One morning there was a knock on John’s door. He opened it to find a man with a carpenter’s toolbox.

“I’m looking for a few days work,” he said.

“Perhaps you would have a few small jobs here and there. Could I help you?”

“Yes,” said the older brother. “I do have a job for you. Look across the creek at that farm. That’s my neighbor, in fact, it’s my younger brother.

Last week there was a meadow between us and he took his bulldozer to the river levee and now there is a creek between us. Well, he may have done this to spite me, but I’ll go him one better. See that pile of lumber curing by the barn? I want you to build me a fence - an eight-foot fence - so I won’t need to see his place anymore. Cool him down, anyhow.”

The carpenter said, “I think I understand the situation. Show me the nails and the post-hole digger, and I’ll be able to do a job that pleases you.”

The older brother had to go to town for supplies, so he helped the carpenter get the materials ready, and then he was off for the day.

The carpenter worked hard all that day measuring, sawing, nailing.

About sunset when the farmer returned, the carpenter had just finished his job. The farmer’s eyes opened wide, his jaw dropped.

There was no fence there at all. It was a bridge . . . a bridge stretching from one side of the creek to the other! A fine piece of work handrails and all - and the neighbor, his younger brother, was coming across, his hand outstretched.

“You are quite a fellow to build this bridge after all I’ve said and done.”

The two brothers stood at each end of the bridge, and then they met in the middle, taking each other’s hand. They turned to see the carpenter hoist his toolbox on his shoulder.

“No, wait! Stay a few days. I’ve a lot of other projects for you,” said the older brother.

“I’d love to stay on,” the carpenter said, “but, I have many more bridges to build.”

Activities include food booths, games for children, train rides, ring toss, bingo, and a bake and craft sale.

Mass is at 7:30 a.m. and 9:30 a m., followed by a barbecue meal, music all day, games, booths, huge prize drawing, and a grand auction. This will be held under two large pavilions and a huge tent. Plenty of cold drinks will be available. Come out for great family entertainment.

Our beautiful, painted historic church will be open for viewing.

SPJST Vision Statement Our vision is to provide a wholesome family environment; to encourage cherished Czech traditions; and to provide high quality, competitive life insurance for our members.

Lodge Incentive Guidelines

Beginning in 2014, the scope of SPJST’s longstanding Premium Refund Program will be expanded to incorporate the Membership Program incentives, dramatically simplifying the program and compensating lodges on the basis of the premium income generated by the lodge.

The formula for calculating the Enhanced Premium Refund is:

1. $1 for each paid-up certificate; and 2. 2.80 percent of the lodge’s annual earned premium.

District Two Fall Fun Day Sunday, September 21 at Lodge 18, Elgin

Hello to All! I just want to let you all know about District Two Fall Fun Day on Sunday, September 21, 2014, at Lodge 18, Elgin.

Registration starts at 1 p.m., and the meeting will begin at 2 p.m. We are going to have a couple of contests.

We will have our regular Christmas ornament contest (this one is also for the youth), and this year, we are adding a contest of candymaking for ages 16 and over. The candy must be made from scratch and have the candy displayed on a disposable plate. We will need 13 pieces—one for the judge and 12 to be auctioned off after they are judged. There will be prizes for first, second, and third places for each contest. We will have three spin wheels, a cake walk, and door prizes, along with a football pot, and a 50-50 drawing, with proceeds going to the Czech Heritage Museum. Patsy will have her silent auction for the youth club. We

are asking members to please bring items for the silent auction and for the spin wheels. You may also bring something sweet for the cake walk. We hope we will have a lot of you entering these contests.

Lodge 18, Elgin is going to have a wonderful meal of chicken fried steak, gravy, mashed potatoes, green beans, and tea. So come one, come all to Elgin on September 21 and join in the fun and games and a great meal. The meal will cost you only $3. Where else can you go to have so much fun and get a great meal for only $3?

We hope to see a lot of our members attending this District Two Fall Fun Day in Elgin on September 21.

To Members of District Four, All District Four members are invited to come to SPJST Lodge 49, Rowena on Saturday, October 4, 2014, for our annual fall fun day. There will be a catered meal as well as games for everyone. We will have bingo, dominoes, and board games planned for all who attend. There will also be three contests for anyone to enter regardless of age. These are baked goods, needlework, and sewing. If you won the previous year, you are not eligible to enter the same contest the following year.

Registration will start at 11 a.m., followed by the meal at 12 noon. Games and contest will follow. This is the time that the youth will be entering the Christmas ornament contest as well.

Lodge 13 Dime Box invites all to Black Bridge Festival

“God Bless America” in Dime Box, Texas . . . Lodge 13, Dime Box invites everyone to the Dime Box Black Bridge Festival and Mini-Marathon on Friday, October 3 and Saturday, October 4, 2014, in downtown Dime Box, Texas. Festival hours are Friday from 3 to 11 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. The festival will be held in downtown Dime Box, Texas.

The festival kicks off Friday at 3 p.m. with check-in for barbecue teams. At 6 p.m., a freewill donation supper will be available along with a performance by Dime Box ISD Choir.

A street dance by Bobby Mikulin, Jr. Band begins at 7 p.m.

Saturday will be a full day of fun and activities beginning at 8 a.m. when arts and crafts booths open. The mini-marathon that includes a 10K run, two-mile run, and two-mile walk begins at 9 a.m. Empire Elite Cheer Company will perform at 10 a.m. followed by a performance by the State Czech Queen t 10:30 a.m. Results and awards for the mini-marathon will be announced and presented at 11 a.m.

At 2 p.m., the Veterans program begins followed by a performance by the Dime Box ISD Cheerleaders at 3 p.m.

Barbecue cook-off awards along with an auction will begin at 4 p.m.

JW Riza will play music beginning at 5 p.m.

Other activities include a barbecue cookoff, classic car display, children’s games, bingo, food, drinks, and music throughout the day.

The event is sponsored by Dime Box Lions Club.

All proceeds benefit the Dime Box Lions Club Scholarship Fund, The Black Bridge Park initiative, and other Dime Box Lions Club projects.

Lodge 15 Buckholts works to preserve its historic hall

The September 2014 meeting of SPJST Lodge 15, Buckholts was called to order at 5 p.m. by President Doug Williams. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Frank Tomascik followed by a moment of silence in memory of our departed members.

Lodge officers were all present except Vice President A.W. Zajicek who is still not feeling real well. We really miss him and Lamerle at the meetings.

Roof Repairs The meeting was mostly a discussion on the repair of our lodge building roof. Local contractor John Smith attended the meeting to assist us in making a decision as to what can be done. There is no way that we can afford a completely new roof. He explained what could be done to repair it temporarily. It is of most importance that we preserve this important, historical building. Sandie Fischer made the motion, seconded by Virginia Williams, to have John Smith submit a bid with a breakdown on the different materials used as well as the labor. In the meantime, we will get other bids as well.

Derrick Ruzicka made the motion to adjourn, seconded by Virginia Williams. Motion carried. Door prizes were drawn.

Sister Lorena Mary Crenek Canik Achieves Grand Age of 96

SPJST congratulates Sister Lorena Mary Crenek Canik, a member of Lodge 1, Fayetteville, who will celebrate her 96th birthday on September 19, 2014. As such, Sister Canik is entitled to all SPJST benefits with no further dues or assessments required.

Lorena was born to Edward and Adela Warschak Crenek in Nada.

She has one brother, Edgar L. Crenek.

On October 4, 1938, Sister Lorena married Rudolph I. Canik in Needville. They farmed cotton and corn all of their lives. They also raised cattle and chickens. Lorena loves gardening and having fresh vegetables. Rudolph and Lorena’s children are Dorothy A. Gully,

Madeline A. Vitek and husband Frankie L. Vitek, and Gilbert E. Canik. The children live very close to their mother. Rudolph passed away on July 2, 1981.

Lorena loves reminiscing and talking with and about her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She is a member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Fayetteville, and she is also a member of the Altar Society. Lorena’s hobbies are sewing, quilting, baking, and canning. She loves visiting with all her many friends.

Again, congratulations to Lorena Mary Crenek Canik on attaining the Grand Age of 96.

Lodge 24, Cyclone reports on September meeting

SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone met at Flag Hall on Monday, September 8, 2014. The meeting was called to order at 7:10 p.m. by President Daniel Wilde. A silent prayer was held for the sick and deceased members and in remembrance of Labor Day. Margaret Mikeska read the minutes of the last meeting. They were approved as read.

President Wilde mentioned checking PolkaBeat.com as the dance on the 21st was mentioned.

Shirley Hoelscher gave the FAC report. District Two Fall Meeting will be held on September 21 at Lodge 18, Elgin. Other dates include 30th Annual Kolache Festival in Caldwell on September 13; Grandparents’ Day is September 7; SPJST 2015 calendar events are due to Editor Melanie Zavodny by October 1; October is Czech Heritage Month in Texas with a special Heritage Day at the State Fair in Dallas on October 19; and 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive begins.

Brenda Maddux gave an outstanding bar report. She also gave the youth club report. On August 17, they had six youth and four adults, and on September 7, they had 18 youth, 10 adults, and two guests. They are at the pizza place and 14 youth then went to Jumpstreet. They handed out order blanks for their dressing fundraiser. Price for each order is $15. Order from any youth club member. September 21 is the District Two Fall Meeting, and October 25 is Make a Difference Day. Birthdays were Shirley Hoelscher, Camryn Stock, Shelby Bruggman, and Michael Hoelscher.

Old business was planning for Willie Kotrla’s dance. Plans were made for 300 patties. President Wilde will cook on his grill.

Lodge 24, Cyclone committee plans dinner/dance fundraiser

Lodge 24, Cyclone committee met before the lodge meeting at Flag Hall on September 8, 2014, at 6:30 p.m.

The fundraiser will be a dinner/dance with a prize drawing. Prizes will be $2,000; $1,000; $500; and $250. Tickets will be printed after the caterer is selected at the next meeting after the dance on September 21.

Lodge 29, Taylor readies for barbecue cookoff

Lodge 29, Taylor met on Wednesday, September 10, 2014. President Ronnie Rieger presided at the meeting and opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence for our departed members and service personnel. Officer roll call showed Tammy Whatley and Adolph Grieger absent. The August minutes were read and approved.

Ronnie gave the treasurer’s report.

Vice President Sharon Kaderka reported we will collect in November for the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive. On September 12 and 13, the 30th Annual Kolache Festival in Caldwell will be held. On September 21, the District Two Fall Meeting will be in Elgin. The Houston Slavic Heritage Festival will be on September 28. October is Czech Heritage Month.

Cristy Girod reported on the activities the youth have participated in.

Four of the youth rode on the float in the Westfest parade. They then danced beseda. On August 31, the youth participated in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge along with Nonnie’s Blue Angels and the Brethren Youth Fellowship group. There were over 50 people present, and $810 was raised.

At the youth club meeting, Alisha Raesz talked about her mother having ALS and why the Ice Bucket Challenge is so important to help find a cure for this disease. In October, the District Two fall activity will be at Austin’s Park ‘n Pizza and on October 11, the District Two Beseda Dancers will have an outing. The youth club appreciates any kind of donation for the silent auction they will have at the

Albin Machu signed up new member Zane Meiller. Connie Voigt made a motion to accept the new member, and Lyn Rieger seconded. The motion passed.

Lodge 29, Taylor barbecue cookoff Sept. 26-27

SPJST Lodge 29, Taylor will hold its 14th annual barbecue cookoff Friday, September 26 and Saturday, September 27, 2014. The hall/cookoff grounds are located at 5025 FM 619 in Taylor, Texas. This event was voted “Best Taylor Event.”

Entry fees are $100 for chicken, pork ribs, and brisket; $10 for jackpot pinto beans; $10 for cook’s choice; and $10 for jackpot pork butt. Cash and trophies will be awarded for first to 10th places in all meat categories (chicken, pork ribs, and brisket). Cash and unique trophies will be awarded for first, second, and third master cook and “best rig”. For jackpot pinto beans, cook’s choice, and pork butt, award is 80 percent payback. Cash prizes will be awarded for first through fifth places and trophies for first through 10th place. A total of $4,000 prize money will be awarded.

Anyone is welcome to judge on Saturday.

Friday Night Dance Come out and enjoy a free dance on Friday, September 26 from 7:30 to 11:30 p.m. featuring the Glen Collins Band. Old-fashioned hamburgers will be sold by parents of Thrall 4-H/FFA members on Friday from 6 to 9 p.m.

Lodge 47, Seaton reports on September meeting

Dear Vestnik Readers, On a nice warm and cloudy day, President Edwin Pechal called the September 7, 2014, meeting of SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton to order at 2:05 p.m.

Youth members Hunter Bartek and Justin Kraatz presented the flags and led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. We remained standing for a moment of silence for departed member Madeline Thompson. All officers were present.

Attending the meeting this afternoon were 21 adults, one youth, and one

visitor, Tom Williams. Welcome back, Tom, and we look forward to seeing you again.

On the sick list are Albert Pechal, Lee Hanusch, Alice Mares, and Ruth Janacek. We wish each of these members a quick and complete recovery.

August minutes were read and approved with one correction. I failed to mention Edward Mares as having an August birthday. Edward, I hope you had a great day. The unofficial August board minutes were also read.

New members welcomed into our lodge are Mason Wayne Psencik, written by Dolores Skrabanek; Donald “Colby” Marinik, written by Patsy Koslovsky; and David Charles Pechal, written by David Pechal. Hope to see you soon at Star Hall. Please always feel welcome to join us at any time.

President Pechal asked all grandparents and great-grandparents to stand and be recognized in honor of Grandparents Day. The new roofing work will begin this week along with the new parking lot lights. Our most gracious appreciation goes to Rickie Novosad and Heath of Novosad Electric for the fine work, time, and discount they have given to their home lodge for the electrical work. Thank you!

Edwin stated this was the first year he and Judy attended the Corpus Christi Getaway. They had a wonderful time and now see what all the talk and excitement is about everyone wanting to go. He recommends that everyone should go. President Pechal stated he personally wanted to thank everyone who helped at the barbecue cookoff. He was very pleased with the turnout.

Lodge 47 plans to have a fundraiser after the first of the year to establish an endowed scholarship fund in memory of our beloved Frank Klinkovsky.

Vice President David Pechal, who also is chairman of the Outdoor Extravaganza fundraiser, encouraged everyone to continue selling tickets and getting donations. Final details were discussed.

FAC Tammy Martinez stated the Scholarship applications are available, the 2015 calendar deadline is October 1, and the 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive begins on October 1. The month of October is Czech Heritage Month.

Treasurer Becky Zavodny gave her report which was approved, and Bar Manager/Hall Manager Danny Stepan gave his reports. Becky also stated that Julia Zavodny, 2013 SPJST State Queen, will be competing in the Miss Texas Teen Pageant in November. Youth Leader Joyce Kraatz stated there were 24 youth present for their meeting. Colby Marinik, a new SPJST member, joined the youth club today. Members and parents enjoyed a presentation by Don Mears and Kenny Lange from the Czech Heritage Museum. Following the presentation, they were presented with a $250 check from the youth club. District Two Beseda Dancers performed at Westfest. The October youth club meeting will be held in Austin on October 4 at 11 a.m. in conjunction with the District Two social at Austin Park ‘n Pizza. The October 25 Make a Difference Day project will be the collection of blankets to be given to the Salvation Army. Everyone is asked to

District Two FAC Ruth Hanusch invited everyone to the fall meeting to be held in Elgin on September 21. She talked about all the activities going on that day. Great fun and good food!

Lodge 79 Corpus Christi hosts getaway

Lodge 79, Corpus Christi enjoyed a meal of roast beef which was catered on August 17, 2014. The meeting was called to order by President Mark Rebecek who led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. We observed a moment of silence for deceased member Geraldine Ann Butler. On our sick list were Larry Novosad who is recovering from surgery, Dollie Huddleston, sister of Judy Majek and Leona Grant and Jerry Sain, son-in-law of Leona Grant and brother-in-law of Marcia Rew. We wish them well.

All officers were present except Youth Leader Gerilyn Donnell. We had 21 members and guests present.

The July minutes and treasurer’s report were given and approved.

Under communications, we had one death claim; one transfer; and new sales agent - Eligio Cueva. President Rebecek read a thank you letter from District One Director/Chairman Donnie Victorick thanking our lodge for hosting the weekend getaway.

Larry Elzner gave a report on the golf tournament held at the weekend getaway. Representing Lodge 79 were Jim and Tim Elzner and two of their friends winning second place. Congratulations!

FAC report was given by Vice President/FAC Jerry Sijansky. He thanked all who attended the weekend getaway from our lodge. District Seven Fall Meeting will be held on October 19 in New Berlin. Since this is when Lodge 79 has our monthly meeting, we voted to change our meeting to October 26.

Lodge 88, Houston readies for Oct. 12 Czech Day

Lodge 88, Houston invites all to its Czech Day Celebration on Sunday, October 12, 2014. Lodge 88 is located at 1435 Beall Street at West 15th in Houston.

Dinner will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will include sausage, sauerkraut, cabbage rolls, and potatoes.

The cost is $8 for adults and $4 for children (ages high school senior and under).

Entertainment from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. includes Lodge 88 Czech Orchestra, Wawel Folk Dance Ensemble, and Lodge 88 Czech Choral Group.

American Cancer Society Recognizes Lodge 177, Academy

Lodge 91, San Jacinto hosts Paws Across Texas benefit

Lodge 91, San Jacinto held its third quarterly meeting of 2014 on Saturday, September 6, 2014, at CC’s Pizza in Baytown, Texas. All officers were present with the exception of Vice President Polly Lowden and Secretary Vonda Smesny. There were 13 members and two non-members in attendance.

The meeting was called to order by President Will Locke. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited, and there was a moment of silence for departed members. The minutes and treasurer’s report were read and approved.

FAC Malba Smesny informed members of scholarships that are available from the Home Office, and she read the fraternal updates of upcoming events. She also informed members of the success of the July 12 Paws Across Texas Benefit at WalMart in Crosby and the upcoming Paws Across Texas Benefit planned for December 20 at Wal-Mart in Crosby. All the monetary donations and food that were collected at these two benefits were distributed among several animal shelters and for vet bills for animals that were found and had been neglected. Approximately $1,286 and 980 pounds of food were collected at both benefits along with a few toys and blankets.

Lodge 92 Fort Worth Czech Heritage Day this Saturday

Lodge 92, Fort Worth invites all to Czech Heritage Day this Saturday, September 20, 2014. Doors open at 2 p.m. Admission is $10 per person with youth ages 12 and under free of charge. Music will be by the Jodie Mikula Orchestra from 6 to 10 p.m.

Lodge 183 Arlington hosts appreciation dinner

The monthly meeting was held at 7 p.m. on Monday, September 8, 2014, at Cotton Patch Cafe in Arlington, Texas, for the employee appreciation dinner. President Ann thanked everyone for coming and announced the birthdays for September as Daniel Roznovsky and Pat Sill on the 14th, Tara Moore on the 15th, Robert Sill on the 16th, Angeline Stiborek on the 21st, and Joann Adamek on the 27th.

Financial Secretary Kay Weeks made an announcement that if you have anyone who is graduating this year to be sure you fill out the scholarship application.

Kay stated, “Happy Grandparents Day” to all the grandparents and gave out a special poem for grandparents thanking them for supporting the youth club at Lodge 183, Arlington. Thank you, Kay, for the special poem.

Dinner was delicious, and everyone enjoyed the hospitality! Ann, all of us want to say thank you so very much for the employee appreciation dinner.

Lodge 191, Lufkin invites all to dances

I hope everyone had a great summer and got their children or grandchildren, as is the case for most of us, back to school, and everything is back to normal—whatever normal is. I also hope you are now ready for fall to begin.

I know we had a good crowd for the August dance, while George and I were in Washington visiting our daughter and her family. It was as hot up there as it was here most of the time.

Glenn Lenderman and Friends always puts on a good show; he and his friends are good performers. The winner of the 50-50 drawing was Mittie Ray, and the dance tickets were won

by Maxey Kirkley, and Woody Porterfield. Congratulations to these winners. It does pay to come to our dances.

Thanks to all who brought food, and A.C. and Kathy Riley, Marvin and Diane McDowell, and Mary Baker for decorating for this pirate dance. They always do a good job, and I know the decorations were very good. Wish I could have been there, but you cannot be in two places at the same time.

I have not heard any news on Elizabeth Cavanaugh so I hope she is getting better every day. Please continue to remember Elizabeth and Bobbie Lee Friday. Bobbie Lee has had a tough time with the last hospital stay, but she continues to get better.

The band for the September dance will be Linda Kaye and the Kool Katz.

We always have a good crowd for this band, so bring a friend and come out and dance the night away. This is the Cajun band that plays all kinds of music. The dance is from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. at the SPJST Lodge, located at 197 Hughes Road in Lufkin.

The admission is $6 for members and $7 for guests. Please bring a potluck dish for the food table. We have a lot of good cooks in this town.

If you are interested in becoming a member of SPJST Lodge 191, please see one of the officers, and they will be glad to get you an application. The yearly dues are $12 per year for regular members, and $15 per year for social members. Regular members are members that have a life insurance or annuity from SPJST. Regular members pay $6 to get in the dances, and social members pay $7.

The next lodge meeting is Monday, September 15 at 7 p.m. and usually lasts about an hour. Members are urged to attend the monthly meetings.

This meeting determines the rules and regulations; one person cannot do anything - it takes a lot of people to run this lodge.

Lodge 202, Jourdanton met Sunday, September 7, 2014, at Jourdanton Community Center with 31 members and guests present. President James House welcomed everyone. Flag Bearer Lilianna Wiederhold posted the colors and led the Pledge of Allegiance. Silence was observed for deceased members and in honor of the armed forces.

Secretary Bettie House read the minutes that were approved as read.

Treasurer Sandra Hoggard presented the financial report.

The District Seven Family Fun Day on October 19 was discussed.

FAC Kathleen Polasek noted today is Grandparents Day. October is Czech Heritage Month.

Youth Leader Regina House announced the youth club is collecting lap blankets for the nursing home.

These may be brought to the November 2 meeting.

Sammy Hoggard presented his Free Enterprise speech. He attended the Farm Bureau Leadership Conference in Stephenville during the summer and is eligible to present his speech for scholarships.

Members present who are celebrating September birthdays are Lloyd House, Sandra Hoggard, Georgia Marek, and Johnny Marek. Georgia and Johnny Marek are also celebrating their 55th wedding anniversary.

Dear Vestnik Readers, I hope all youth are having a good school year so far. I hope this will be one of the best years ever. I just cannot believe our youth are growing up so fast. Sad for all of us, isn’t it?

Several big events are coming up very soon!

Sunday, September 21 District Two Fall Meeting Lodge 18, Elgin I hope to see you there! This is, of course, the fall fun day. Spinning wheel booths and a cake walk will be set up. Other games will be set up specifically for the youth. I ask that all Leaders-in-Training help with the youth games. Youth members and adults, please enter the Christmas ornament contest. Each youth participant will receive money and may receive even more money if their ornament places. Check page 37 of the 2014-2015 SPJST Youth Handbook for the rules.

A new contest for members of District Two, ages 16 and above, is candy making. Stir up and bring 13 pieces of your favorite candy along with the recipe and you are in the contest. The other pieces of candy will be auctioned off with proceeds to go back into the District Two Fund. I do know for a fact, that some of you teens make some awesome candy.

Registration for the Christmas ornaments and candy will be from 1 to 2 p.m. The judging and a brief meeting will begin at 2 p.m. with games, prizes, and a fantastic catered meal following.

Youth members, you want to be sure to attend this day as you may be one of the lucky winners to receive one of three gift cards. If you have written a letter to the Vestnik this quarter—June, July, and August—your name has gone into a drawing each time you wrote a letter. You must be in attendance to receive the award. Get those letters into the Vestnik. The next drawing will be held at the District Two lock-in in December. We want everyone in the state to see what a fun time and all the activities we have in District Two!

Gattiland in Round Rock for pizza and games . . . ice skating . . . Jumpstreet . . . a family dinner. You and your parents are each so well deserving of this day. You have put in countless hours of practices, reading my emails and answering emails over and over again, traveling, changing schedules to fit in practices and performances, and mostly dancers, keeping the Czech heritage alive with your awesome performances! I am so proud of you, as is your family, SPJST, and each and

every place you have performed. We have been so blessed to be so welcomed with all the love and support we receive at each performance.

Is our SPJST District Two youth busy or what? Yes, we are, and we are loving every minute of it! This what makes our District Two Youth Program so great!

Yes, there is one more activity planned for 2014!

Lodge 17 New Tabor youth: first day of school

My first day of school was August 25, 2014. I attend Caldwell Elementary School, and I am in kindergarten. I was so excited to finally get to go to the “big” school.

My teacher is Mrs. Faust, and she also taught my big brother Weston when he was in kindergarten. I am looking forward to a fun year.

Lodge 6 Lodge 17 Cottonwood New Tabor youth: Youth Club honors first day of school grandparents Dear Readers, Grandparents Day was Sunday, September 7, 2014. The youth club prepared a meal consisting of Mexican lasagna, soft and hard tacos, rice, beans, chips, salsa, and several different kinds of desserts. The meal was enjoyed by all.

The youth received awards from the adult lodge for participating in District and State YADs. Certificates were presented to the youth who participated in the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive and camp tee-shirt design contest.

Everyone enjoyed the district outing at the Playdium Pool in West after the Westfest parade. We had five youth and several parents attend.

My first day of school was August 25, 2014. I attend Caldwell Intermediate school, and I am in the fifth grade. I had a great summer, but I was ready to return to school to see my friends. I am looking forward to a great fifth grade year.

Lodge 25, Ennis Youth Club welcomes new members

Dear Readers, Lodge 25, Ennis Youth Club met Sunday, September 7, 2014, at 1:30 p.m. Five new members were introduced. They are Payton Arciba, Makenzie and Cody Nelson, and Zoe and Lundyn Hovis.

District Three King Pierce and Duke Preston gave us a report on all the recent activities they have been involved in.

Stuffed animals collected will be donated to the local fire department. It was decided that our next charity project will be to collect canned goods to give to a food pantry at Thanksgiving.

We are also planning an outing within the next few weeks. More details to come. It was decided that everyone will start wearing an SPJST tee-shirt to each meeting and outing. As an incentive, each time you wear your teeshirt, your name will be put in a drawing to win a gift card to be given away in May. Paige and Misty won the guessing

game. Payton and April are winners of the monthly door prize. A special thank you to Austen and Zoe for their help putting it together and for helping with snacks.

After the meeting, everyone enjoyed snacks, crafts, hoola-hoops, dodge ball, and socializing.

Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Leader shares activities

Dear Věstník Readers, SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Club held its last monthly meeting on Sunday, September 7, 2014, at 1 p.m.

The meeting was called to order by President Julia Zavodny. In attendance were 24 youth members. We welcomed to the club Colby Marinik and Bella Mitchan, who recently turned

Josh Mitchan led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and club motto.

Old business discussed was the Corpus Christi Getaway. We received a second place (silver) on our sand sculpture, which featured the donkey from the show Hee-Haw. Great job for all the help; it looked awesome. Congrats to Brady on winning Hootenanny King.

August 23 - We went to McLane’s (Scott and White) Children’s Hospital to present a check for $250 to purchase items. We also took crayons, colors, markers, and coloring books.

Members in attendance were Tyson and Chelsea Bilbrey, Jamie and Ann Bostick, Dannikka, Hunter, Camdon, and Assistant Youth Leader Amber Bartek, Justin Kraatz, and Youth Leader Joyce Kraatz.

August 30 - District Two Beseda Dancers performed at Westfest.

Next, Ken and Don from the Czech Heritage Museum spoke to youth members about the Museum. They gave us a lot of information, and we gave them a check for $250 from the money raised at the SPJST Car Show.

So October is Czech Heritage Month.

We encourage each member to go to the Museum. Do the scavenger hunt,

and your name will be placed into a drawing. The older youth will answer questions, and the younger children will find the object within the Museum. The Museum is located at 119 West French Avenue in Temple; hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, and Saturday is by appointment. They are closed on Mondays.

Thank you, gentlemen, for coming out. We appreciate you giving up your Sunday afternoon to be with us. We will see you soon.

District Two Youth Counselor Patsy Koslovsky spoke to us about all the fun things planned for the rest of this year.

September 21 - District Two Fall Fun Day at Lodge 18, Elgin. Registration is 1 to 2 p.m. Please bring groceries and items for the cake walk.

There will be a Christmas ornament contest for all ages, and something new: candy making contest for ages 16 and over. The candy must be made from scratch and 13 pieces placed on a disposable plate. After judging, the candy will be auctioned off. There will be door prizes, 50-50 drawing, football pot, and silent auction. The meal will be chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes, green beans, and tea. Cost is $3.

October 4 - We will go to Austin Park ‘n Pizza in Pflugerville, located at 16231 IH 35, Exit 248. If you will be attending, we need to know, and we have to know your height and the amount of activities you will participate in so Patsy will know how many tickets to purchase by September 25. We will have our youth club meeting at 2 p.m. instead of 11 a.m. that day. No youth club meeting will be held at the lodge hall on Sunday, October 5.

October 11 - District Two Beseda Dancers will be going to eat pizza at Gattiland in Round Rock at 11 a.m.

They will then go ice skating then to Jumpstreet. The same goes for this activity. Patsy has to know if you are going to all three places by September 25.

December 5 to 6 - District Two Lock-in at Wilson Park and Recreation Center in Temple; Friday at 7 p.m. to Saturday at 7 a.m.

New Business September 14 - set up for the Outdoor Extravaganza at 2 p.m. and make cole slaw.

September 20 - Outdoor Extravaganza. Tickets are still available. If you need a ticket, please purchase as soon as possible. We are giving away: First prize - Three-person guided hunt to Santa Anna, Texas, west of Brownwood; Second prize - Five-night Caribbean cruise/travel voucher; Third prize - Six-person guided fresh water fishing trip to Lake Tawakoni; Fourth prize - Four-person bay fishing trip to Port O’Connor, Texas; Fifth prize Two-person weekend get-away to Fredericksburg, Texas at the Kingwood Suites; Sixth prize - Four-person, one round of golf at Wildflower Golf Course in Temple. And ladies, this year there will be pink knives to pull for some great prizes. Doors open

at 5 p.m; meal served at 6:30 p.m.

October 25 - Make a Difference Day. I suggested we collect blankets, gloves, stocking caps, socks, etc. If you know any other organization we can donate to, let us know.

For Christmas this year, we will still be collecting toys for the less fortunate. At the November meeting, we will hand out stockings for you all to fill. The stockings will be given to the Salvation Army to distribute.

We voted to purchase a sign for display at the Outdoor Extravaganza.

We will need to get a scrapbook committee meeting scheduled so that we can begin collecting and organizing for the next scrapbook.

After the meeting, we accepted the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge from

Lodge 29, Taylor Youth Club. You can see the video on Facebook. The kids had fun.

October 26, we will be having a dedication of the outside pavilion.

Lodge 79, Corpus Christi welcomes Marcus A. Rebecek, age five, to the youth club. He is the son of Stephen and Laura Rebecek, and he has a little brother Jacob. Grandparents are Mark and Virginia Rebecek.

Marcus attends kindergarten at Robert Wilson Elementary School in Corpus Christi. His favorite color is red, and his favorite food is mashed potatoes.

He enjoys fishing with his dad and papa. Marcus has entered two fishing tournaments with his dad.

Lodge 88, Houston youth attends 50s sock hop

I attended the Lodge 88, Houston Workers’ Party on September 7, 2014.

The theme was the 50s Sock Hop, hosted by Chairman Pat Bruce and her committee.

For lunch, The Backyard Grill served hamburgers and corn-dogs as well as beverages, snacks, and soda floats that were provided by the lodge.

There were quite a few folks there, and everyone had a wonderful time.

Lodge 202, Jourdanton Youth: Yee Haw!

This year’s end-of-summer getaway took on a southern atmosphere as the theme was Hee-Haw, one of the popular old shows that my grandpa and I watch. The weekend was actionpacked with more than just two-steppin’ and boot scootin’. There was something for everyone with a golf tournament, deep sea fishing, horseshoes and sand sculpting, as well as indoor events such as bunco and dominoes. I particularly liked playing dominoes again for my second year. I Lodge 202, Jourdanton members at the Corpus Christi getaway held August 8 to 10.

Czechoslovak Foreign Institute announces Czech study program

The Czechoslovak Foreign Institute announces the study tour for 2015 (June 28 to July 19). Group participants will be housed in dorms of the Agricultural School at Suchdol with double occupancy rooms sharing a bath. The dorm is situated in the northwestern part of Praha, linked to downtown by bus and subway. Three meals a day will be served featuring authentic Czech cuisine.

Victoria County Czech Heritage Festival this Sunday

Victoria County’s 29th Annual Czech Heritage Festival is Sunday, September 28, 2014, from 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Victoria Community Center, located at 2905 East North in Victoria, Texas.

The music lineup includes Randy Janak Spinning Wheel DJ from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.; Shiner Hobo Band from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Fritz Hodde and Fabulous Six from 1 to 4 p.m.; Fritz Hodde and Fabulous Six and The Red Ravens from 4 to 4:30 p.m.; and The Red Ravens from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.

A very special event will be learning “hands-on” with Czech cultural art/craft classes taught by Daniela Sipkova Mahoney. Daniela was born in Prague, Czech Republic. She now resides in Portland, Oregon, and is known worldwide. Since 1983, she has decorated more than 84,000 egg ornaments. She will sign books and personalize egg ornaments in the dome from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Beginning at 2 p.m., attendees can see and learn from Daniela’s exquisite work and presentations. She will conduct several classes. Classes are only $2 per person per class. The classes are underwritten by VCCHS and normally cost $18.50 per person per class.

Dozinky set for Lodge 88, Houston October 12 hosts Czech Soup in Taiton Tasting The Czech Heritage Society of Texas, Harris County Chapter will host its annual soup tasting on Saturday, October 11, 2014, at SPJST Lodge 88, Houston, located at 1435 Beall Street in Houston, Texas.

The event will include five varieties of soups to taste—all you can eat—at $7 for adults and $3.50 for children under 10 years of age. There will be kolaches, cookies, and cakes for sale.
