Lodge 88, Houston Youth Club members gathered on April 28—11 days after the tragedy in West—for their monthly meeting. The explosion was still very heavy on the minds of the youth. Meeting discussion turned philanthropical as the youth wanted to reach out and do something to help the people in West, Texas, —many of whom are their SPJST brothers and sisters. “These youth club members were so compelled to help out that they wanted to give their entire treasury to the West Benevolence Fund,” Assistant Youth Leader Michelle Wockenfuss said. “After an open discussion, they decided to give the sum of $2,500 so they could also help others with future needs.” But these very giving youth did not stop there. They challenged Lodge 88, Houston’s adult lodge to give the same donation. “Youth Club President Denae Bronikowski went before the board and challenged them,” Sister Wockenfuss stated. “The board voted and approved to match the youth club’s donation of $2,500.” Bingo Chairman JoAnn Buri then announced that the Bingo Committee would also make a $3,000 donation to the fund. Hats off to Lodge 88, Houston Youth Club for its fraternalism in action. “I am so proud of the youth for thinking of others by paying it forward,” Sister Wockenfuss added. “It is a very selfless act.” The youth club met on May 19 to finalize the donation. Youth Club Treasurer Keith Wockenfuss wrote out a check and presented it to Youth Club President Denae Bronikowski to send to the West Benevolence Fund. The youth club also issued a challenge: To each SPJST lodge, youth club, and member across the state—please donate something to West Benevolence Fund. “No matter how big or small the donation is, every dollar is needed and helps make a difference,” Sister Wockenfuss noted.
