Lodge 9, Snook Member Ollie Jakubik Achieves Grand Age of 96
SPJST congratulates Sister Ollie Jakubik, a member of SPJST Lodge 9, Snook, who will celebrate her 96th birthday on July 20, 2012. As such, Sister Jakubik is entitled to all SPJST member benefits with no further dues or assessments required. Ollie (Olga Emilie Shenkir) Jakubik was born in Seaton, Texas, in 1916. She grew up on a farm in Seaton and learned about a loving family life and the value of hard work from her parents John M. and Emilie (Lesikar) Shenkir. Ollie and her brother John Shenkir are the only surviving siblings. Sister Martha Shenkir Armintrout and brothers Edwin, Adolph, Rudolph, and Jessie Shenkir are all deceased. Their mother Emilie died in a house fire when Ollie was about 16 years old so Ollie had to help her father with her three younger siblings. Their father
John passed away in about 1941. Ollie married Ernest Rudolph Jakubik on November 24, 1938, at the home of Reverend F.J. Kostorhyz in Temple, Texas. Ernest was a farmer/rancher and an SPJST sales representative. Ollie was a mother and homemaker. She also worked at various jobs including the grocery store bakery and the greatest length of time as store clerk and kitchen helper at Snook ISD from which she retired in 1989. Ollie and
Ernest were blessed with four children: Carlson (wife Judy Fuchs) of New Braunfels, Lyndon (wife Maude Bothe) of Snook, Elaine (husband James Muzny) of Deanville, and Bernice (husband Thomas Junek) of Snook; 11 grandchildren and spouses; and 12 great-grandchildren. Ernest passed away in 1989. The knowledge that she learned on the family farm helped Ollie in her life as a mother/homemaker raising four chil-
dren on a farm working with Ernest taking care of animals and working in the fields. “I remember milking cows by hand and making homemade cheese, and caring for the household needs,” she says. “Our children also had to help out on the farm; it was hard work, but it brings wonderful memories of family togetherness that you don’t see too much of today.” The memories of togetherness extend to visiting friends and family on Sunday afternoon and enjoying svacina of poppyseed and cottage cheese kolaches and doughnuts with coffee and tea. An SPJST member for 78 years, Ollie’s first SPJST life insurance certificate was purchased by her father. “And, after I married Ernest, he made sure I had another,” Ollie remarks.
