SPJST awards 52 scholarships; introduces “sponsorship” scholarship SPJST will be awarding a total of 52 college scholarships this spring. “Congratulations to the recipients and to everyone who submitted an application,” says Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek. “General Scholarship winners are selected by an outside academic institution and selected on the basis of grades, SAT scores, personal statement, and three letters of recommendation. SPJST Leadership Grant applications are also reviewed by an outside academic institution with the additional variable of active youth club participation factored into the selection process. “Every year we hear the same thing from those who do the evaluations — that the selection process was difficult. It’s a challenge, I know, when so many outstanding young people are eligible for consideration.”

It All Adds Up SPJST scholarships are funded by the Supreme Lodge and contributions by SPJST members through the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive and memorial donations. Accordingly, the more funds available, the more scholarships awarded. “It all adds up and the end result is a great and positive difference,” says President Vanicek. SPJST also maintains an endowed scholarship program. SPJST endowed scholarships may be established starting at $10,000. By definition, SPJST endowed scholarships are ones in which the principal remains intact and only the interest is awarded each year. Once established, the endowed scholarship is managed by the SPJST.
