Kolache Katastrophe

First Kolaches were a Huge Flop . . . But it was Fun! Lodge 49, Rowena Youth Club members Olivia Schwertner, Tanner and Hunter Wood, and Grace Schwertner were at their Nanny’s (Nancy Schwertner) house during spring break and decided to learn how to make kolaches. Nancy looked up a recipe in the SPJST cookbook and stirred up a batch for the kids. The kids had fun making the balls and whatnot and put them in the oven to rise. Well, the dough never rose, but the kids and Nancy decided to keep at it. So the kids finished up the kolaches with some sausage, prune, and persimmon. Nancy baked them, but the final result, well, didn’t turn out right . . . but they sure did taste good! The kids had a wonderful time and can’t wait for the next time. Hopefully, it’ll turn out better!

Get Well Soon, Debbie We send get well wishes to Human Resources Administrator Debbie Klinkovsky who is recovering from minor surgery. Best wishes to Debbie for a speedy recovery.

Get Well Wishes, Roy Financial Secretary Roy Vajdak is progressing well following his surgery on February 15 to repair the tear to his quadriceps tendon. He is recovering at home.

Thanks to today’s technology and the internet, Roy has been able to complete the annual statement, monthly reports, operations summaries, and miscellaneous Home Office assignments.

Best wishes for his continued recovery. Roy plans to return to the Home Office in April.

Congratulations, Gene!

Congratulations to Supreme Lodge Vice President Gene and Frances McBride who welcomed twin greatgrandsons on March 14. Fabian and Xzavier were born to granddaughter Chasidee and Oscar Valdez of Morgan’s Point. Chasidee is the daughter of Gene and Frances’ daughter Amy Whitaker. Brother McBride reports that Chasidee and the new babies are all doing well.

Camp Tee-Shirts Available This year’s summer camp teeshirts are now available to be ordered from the Youth Department.

The tee-shirt features the theme “Paying Tribute to Our Past.” Shirts can be ordered through www.spjst.org by clicking on the “youth” section. Tee-shirts are $6.75 for youth sizes (small, medium, large); $7.75 for adult sizes (small, medium, large, extra-large); $8.75 for adult 2X; and $9.75 for adult 3XL. Orders can also be mailed to the Youth Department at the Home Office. Tee-shirts will be delivered to district camps this summer. Teeshirts can also be shipped to you for a charge of $2 per shirt.

Youth Leaders Workshop SPJST will welcome youth leaders from across the state at the annual Youth Leaders Workshop this Saturday, March 24 at the Home Office.

Lodge 15, Buckholts member celebrates 96th birthday; 84 years of SPJST membership

I’m beholden to so many people for making my 96th birthday such a blessed occasion for me. Lest you’re thinking that by mentioning it again is like beating a dead horse, I forgot to mention that I’m not only diabetic, but have a host of other ills that I’ll not bore you to mention here. When I reached age 90, that was like a miracle in itself being able to reach each additional year in spite of such a handicap.

That’s what I mean when I say I had to work real hard to get this old.

First of all, I have to thank everyone for that nice stack of birthday cards. I chose this medium to do so even when only two cards came from Lodge 15 members. No matter, each card is special in itself like from my grandson Stephen Vogel who sent me not one, but two, labeling them No. 1 and No. 2. Then, there is one card simply addressed Hilda Kuzel. Then, there are two cards sent by someone for the first time ever. No wonder that I consider each and every card a treasure.

Then I’m also beholden to our Editor Melanie Zavodny who without being asked has kept my picture in the forefront. Not only that, but for having patience with my handwriting and making sure I get my copy of the Vestnik.

Also, last but not least, I have to thank Dorothy Tomascik for her kind words in her Lodge 15 report. Among other things, it’s true that in spite of my bad health and old age, I do have a good memory. Just don’t ask me where I left my cane 15 minutes ago.

Joking aside, I thank you for giving me credit where otherwise, it was not intended.

It’s true that I received not only a 50-year pin as well as a 75-year pin awarded me so long ago, I forgot when. There was no special ceremony, but simply the pin was sent by mail.

Since I became a member in 1928, that means I’ve been one for 84 years.

The number of years are meaningless in itself unless accompanied by what was accomplished during that time.

That’s why I always tried to do my best for SPJST. I was looking forward to celebrating my 96th birthday hosted by the SPJST Home Office and Lodge 15. I also received a congratulatory letter on reaching 96.

Billy Rollwitz announces candidacy for District Four Director

For the past seven years, I have served as director of District Four. I want to thank the members of my district for having elected me to this position.

As your director, our district has grown in insurance sales and mortgages on homes and farms. District Four is presently servicing 123 loan customers.

I have enjoyed serving on the Supreme Lodge, and I feel that as directors, we have worked together and accomplished many things.

I make an effort to attend all lodge meetings in my district, district meetings, fall fun day, youth activities, and Supreme Lodge/Home Office activities. I serve on the audit committee for the Supreme Lodge.

I feel SPJST has a lot to offer, and I want to continue to serve as your director for District Four to help SPJST continue to grow. It has been a great experience for me to serve as a director, and I want to ask the members of our district to reelect me for another four years. With your support, I will

Lodge 6, Cottonwood to host State 42 Domino Tournament April 7 SPJST Lodge 6, Cottonwood is the site of the 2012 SPJST State 42 Domino Tournament on Saturday, April 7.

Check-in begins at 8 a.m., and play begins at 9 a.m. The state tournament is open to everyone—both SPJST members and non-members, ages 16 and above. The entry fee is $7 for members and $15 for non-members.

The entry fee includes snacks and lunch.

Lodge 6, Cottonwood is located at 700 South Czech Hall Road in West.

Lodge 8, Weimar meets March 26

Dear Members, SPJST Lodge 4, Hallettsville met after the District Six Spring Meeting in Moravia on Sunday, March 4, 2012.

President Joe Siptak opened the meeting. The officer and committee reports were dispensed with until the April meeting.

It was voted to have an ad in the SPJST Convention Souvenir Book.

After a discussion, it was voted to change the April meeting due to Easter. It will be the first Sunday, April 1 at 3 p.m. Birthday will be recognized, games played, door prizes give, and lunch served.

Our lodge will also plan a Join Hands Day project. Plans will be made at the next meeting.

SPJST Lodge 6, Cottonwood’s annual Easter party is Sunday, April 1, 2012, at the lodge hall. The day will begin at 2 p.m. with the regular lodge meeting. The annual meeting of SPJST Lodge 6, Inc. will follow. We will also honor our 50-year members. The youth club will present an Easter program, and the West Junior Historian Dancers will perform at 3:30 p.m. An Easter egg hunt for all ages will follow.

At 5 p.m., a fried chicken dinner with all the trimmings will be served.

Members are asked to please bring desserts.

Members of Lodge 8, Weimar met Monday, February 27, 2012, at Weimar. Leo Jares presided at the meeting, and all officers were present.

A potluck meal was served prior to the meeting.

The minutes were read and approved, and the treasurer’s report was accepted as read. Fraternal Activities Coordinator Erlene Janik read from the FAC newsletter. The lodge refund check was turned in to the treasurer for deposit.

A memorial donation was sent to the scholarship fund in memory of Frank Grunewald.

Several members expressed their intention of attending the District Six Spring Meeting at Moravia. We will

also check into a project for Join Hands Day. Henrietta Veselka volunteered to check this out and report back at the March meeting.

Birthdays for February were Rosie Shumbera, Anne Schilhab, and Arlene Marshall. Anne and Hugo Schilhab celebrated 59 years of marriage on February 10.

Lodge 9, Snook plans Join Hands Day project

Donnie Hejl called the March 7, 2012, meeting to order at 7:30 p.m.

Riley and Joshua Green, Dakota Kienow, and Youth Club Honorary Grandparents Dennis and Karen Gaas led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance. A moment of silence was held for Fred Lednicky.

Ann Schoeneman read the minutes of the last meeting, and they stood approved as read.

Bonnie Walker gave the fraternal activities coordinator’s report. David Kovar gave the hall manager’s report.

Bonnie Walker also gave the treasurer’s report.

Marie Shelfer gave the youth club report. Present were 40 youth club members and 13 adults. District One Spring Meeting will be held at Lodge 38, Kovar on April 15. The youth can participate in the kraslice (egg decorating) contest. The youth will meet Wednesday, April 4 at Snook Cemetery at 5:30 p.m. to clean the cemetery for Join Hands Day. The beseda groups have been asked to dance at the Kids 4 Kids at the Hilton. Each member was asked to bring $1 to the March meeting to donate to the SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund.

Lodge 9 was a sponsor for the Snook Girls State Basketball Tournament.

Bill Orsak made a motion to accept two members that had increased their insurance certificates. Josef Orsak seconded the motion. Motion carried.

On April 17, Burleson County Historical Association will meet at the hall for a meeting.

Lodge 9 will be a sponsor for Relay for Life to have our name put on the back of the tee-shirts.

Next Meeting—April 4 The next meeting will be April 4 at 7:30 p.m. The youth club will meet at 5:30 p.m. at Snook Cemetery to clean up for Join Hands Day. Come out and support your youth club and lodge.

Lodge 15 Buckholts hosts Age 96 presentation

Our meeting was called to order at 5 p.m. by President Doug Williams.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by our honored member Hilda Burtis followed by a moment of silence in memory of our departed members. All officers were present. We had 11 members and 11 guests present. President Williams thanked all for their attendance. We really enjoy our visitors.

The minutes from last month’s meeting and the treasurer’s report were approved as read.

We were so honored to have as our guest SPJST Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek, District Two Director Bobby Wuensche and wife Ruth Ann, and Jesse Pospisil who is a candidate for the District Two Director position and his wife Linda. President Williams asked each of them to speak.

Both are very dedicated SPJST members and very well qualified. We were very impressed with each. We wish we could vote for both! Bobby Wuensche invited us to the District Two Spring Meeting on Sunday, March 18 at Lodge 48, Beyersville.

Brian Vanicek spoke. He was happy to report that our SPJST organization had a good, profitable year in spite of the drought and bad economy.

His primary reason for being here was to present our 96-year-old honored member Hilda Burtis with her Age 96 Certificate which explains that she is now a paid-up member and presented her with two checks for her two certificates. He also gave her an appreciation gift and a beautiful, delicious birthday cake which we all got to enjoy. Hilda said that she was mistaken. She is not the fourth member to reach 96; she is the third. Brian thanked her for being such a faithful member over the years and for all the interesting articles she sent in to the Věstník through the years. We are all looking forward to her 100-year cele-

bration. Brian is compiling a life story of Hilda and her family which will be published in the Věstník at a little later date.

We have another faithful member Kathleen Jurca who will be 95 on April 17. She still lives at home. She attends church and our lodge monthly SPJST meetings. We are always so happy to see her and her son Adolph at the meetings.

We elected delegates to the SPJST 2012 Convention which is being held in Killeen on June 11 to 13. We are allowed two delegates and two substitute delegates. Douglas Williams and Sandie Fischer were elected to serve as our two delegates, and Virginia Williams and Dorothy Tomascik as the two substitutes.

We discussed buying an ad for the convention souvenir book. Some suggested the quarter page size ad at $35, but Doug Williams, Jr. spoke up and said he thought we could do better than that. He would donate the other $30 and make it a half page ad for $60.

Sandie Fischer made the motion that we make it a half page ad, seconded

by Virginia Williams. Motion carried.

We were so happy to also have with us SPJST Youth Director Frank Horak. He spoke to us about the summer camps coming up. I’m sure all the youth are very excited about the youth camps. He answered several questions pertaining to our youth.

We thank our photographer Doug Williams, Jr. for taking the pictures for this joyous occasion.

We had a large number of door prizes. President Williams thanked everyone for the nice things that were contributed. We had so many door prizes that everyone ended up a winner!

Lodge 25, Ennis to honor longtime members

The Lodge 25, Ennis meeting was called to order at 7 p.m. by President Jim Holahan after a barbecue meal prepared by Tony and Betty. All officers were present, and the Pledge of Allegiance was led by Margaret.

Secretary Pat read the February minutes and correspondence. Treasurer Cathy gave a good report on the expenses and income of the lodge.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Kay reminded everyone of the upcoming events. Good luck to the six members attending the State 42 Domino Tournament on April 7 at Lodge 6, Cottonwood.

The financial secretary’s report was given by Betty.

Willow Bryn Rudd was approved as a new member. (Thanks to his grandmother Denise Christian of Chatfield for getting him an SPJST certificate.)

Youth Leader Rita Holland reminded the membership of the garage sale on March 17, Join Hands Day, and the Easter party/meeting on April 1.

Old and new business was brought up.

Birthday wishes went out to Hannah Slovak, Dustin Motley, Michael Fowler, and Leslie Mach.

Lodge 29, Taylor hosts successful fundraiser

President Ronnie Rieger called the meeting to order on Wednesday, March 7, 2012. He led the Pledge of Allegiance and had a moment of silence in honor of our departed members and the military that served our country and are still serving to protect us.

Officers absent were Tammy Whatley and Mike Girod. The February minutes were read and approved.

Vice President/Fraternal Activities Coordinator Sharon Kaderka informed us of the State Domino Tournament at Cottonwood on April 7; Bloomin’ Temple Festival on April 21; and Join Hands Day on May 5. The Corpus Christi Getaway will be August 10 to 12. Tickets to the Jirasek Benefit are available, and auction items are needed. Sharon thanked everyone for the desserts and auction items everyone donated for our auction fundraiser.

Jesse Pospisil, on behalf of the Property Committee, also thanked everyone for his/her contributions towards the auction fundraiser. Bobby Eulenfeld thanked Jesse and Ronnie for working on the elevator.

Edmond Tate reported senior citizens dominoes had seven tables of domino players. There were four tables of 42, one table of straight dominoes, one table of chicken foot, and one table of moon.

Ronnie thanked everyone for his/her participation in the auction fundraiser. The District Two Spring Meeting will be held at Beyersville on Sunday, March 18. Items are needed for the silent auction, with the proceeds going towards the district youth fund.

Lyn Rieger made a motion to donate $50 to Relay for Life, and Kathryn Adamek seconded. The motion prevailed.

Wayne Voigt discussed the need for more tables upstairs so we don’t have to take them from the downstairs area.

Lodge 30, Taiton sets April 1 Easter egg hunt

Dear Vestnik Readers, Lodge 30, Taiton held its regular monthly meeting on February 26, 2012, at the Taiton Community Center. President Yvonne Marcaurele called the meeting to order at 1:40 p.m. Members present recited the Pledge of Allegiance led by Jennie Mae Treumer, and a moment of silence was observed for any sick or departed members.

Secretary Wanda Dorotik read the roll call of members and the minutes from the February meeting. The minutes were approved as read.

Treasurer Lisa Bubela gave her report on the financial standing of our lodge. She asked for any outstanding bills. Wanda Dorotik turned in a bill for three flags purchased for the Taiton Community Center. The adult lodge will pay for one-half of the price while the youth club will pay for the other half.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Tommy Drapela reported on events occurring around the state. He reminded members of the upcoming Join Hands Day. He introduced the idea of making a movable burn ring to be placed at SPJST Education and Nature Center (ENC) at Cooper Farm.

Everyone was very excited about the plan.

Youth Leader Lisa Bubela reported on the comings and goings of our youth program. She reminded the members that the District Six Spring Meeting will be on March 4 in Moravia. The youth have an opportunity to compete in the egg decorating contest. Registration will be at 11 a.m.

State Field Representative Karen Kaspar then gave a report on the sales for our lodge this year. She reported that we are off to a wonderful start so far. She encouraged members to continue to give agents new leads to continue to build our lodge.

The members then reviewed our by-laws. All by-laws were approved as previously listed.

The members discussed what size ad to place in the convention souvenir book.

Happy birthday was wished to Lisa Bubela and Karen Kaspar.

Lodge 32, Victoria sets spring fling potluck April 12

Mark your calendar and join us on Thursday, April 12, 2012, for our potluck dinner. We’ll meet at 6 p.m. and serve promptly at 6:30 p.m. Plan to arrive early – look over the yummy dishes and be first in line! Each family is asked to bring a dish or two . . . anything you want to cook! We always end up with a great variety so come hungry!

This can be anything – something you’re proud of – something you’re excited to have – something left to you by a loved one – something you made or went out and bought! Lodge 35, Elk reports on January meeting

The meeting was called to order at 7:18 p.m. on Wednesday January 11, 2012. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all.

Secretary Carla Pavelka read the minutes of the January meeting, and with no corrections, the minutes were approved as read.

Treasurer Barbara Pavelka gave her report, and it was approved as read.

Floor Chairman Gene Pavelka reported a very good month.

Bar Chairman Randy Pavelka gave his report.

There was discussion on buying new carpet for the stage area. Billy Kubitza made a motion to replace the stage and backsplash carpeting. Walter Kubitza seconded the motion. The motion carried. Tammy Martinez will be get samples for members to help make a choice on what we would like to have.

We all would like to wish Secretary Carla Pavelka, a very happy 50th birthday on March 6! Sure hope you had a fantastic day.

Lodge 48 Beyersville welcomes new members

A light meal of sandwiches, etc. was served prior to the March 12, 2012, meeting.

President Robert Leshikar opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance. A moment of silence was taken in remembrance of longtime Lodge 48 member Joe Pokorny who passed away on March 8, 2012.

The officers all gave their reports which were accepted as read. The hall manager reported that rentals are steady, and that Bunco has resumed for the second Tuesday of each month.

The youth leader reminded everyone of the upcoming kolache bake on March 31.

Final plans were made for the District Two Spring Meeting which was held on March 18.

Robert Leshikar presented information on updating the insurance coverage for the Lodge 48 property. The insured amount will be increased due to the improvements and additions that have been made, and liability coverage will be added. A motion was made and approved to move forward with these proposals.

We are happy to report that we have four transfer members who are Hannah Beran, Sarah Beran, Sabrina Beran, and Jeffrey Beran. We also welcome four new members—Abel Saldana, Zoey Kellam, John Srnensky, and James Srnensky.

Birthdays being celebrated in

March are Linda Wuensche, Alice Wuensche, Trevor Wuensche, and Amy Wuensche.

Karl and Sherry Wuensche are celebrating an anniversary in March.

Lodge 76 Wichita Falls welcomes visitors

SPJST Lodge 76, Wichita Falls held its first quarterly meeting of the year on March 4, 2012, at Luby’s Cafeteria in Wichita Falls. President Mary Jane Michna called the meeting to order at 2:15 p.m. She led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Secretary/Treasurer Mary Ann Cook read the minutes of the December 11, 2011, meeting and the financial report of the lodge for November 16, 2011, through February 15, 2012.

All were approved as read.

Correspondence read by Mary Jane included a letter from Supreme Lodge Secretary-Treasurer Leonard Mikeska concerning power of attorney to be sent to the IRS for the lodge; a letter concerning “E” postcard to be signed

by Lodge 76 and returned to the Home Office to comply with Form 990 of the IRS; information to be completed and returned concerning delegates credentials to be taken with them to the convention; forms were completed and returned to the Home Office reporting new officers for 2012; the District Four Spring Meeting will be held Saturday, April 28 at La Quinta Inn in Midland, hosted by Lodge 219, El Paso.

The 31st Convention will be June 11 to 13 in Killeen at the Killeen Civic and Conference Center. Ray and Irene Esparza will attend as delegate and alternate delegate for Lodge 76.

Next Meeting—June 3 The next Lodge 76 meeting will be Sunday, June 3 at 1 p.m. at Luby’s Cafeteria.

District Four Director Billy Rollwitz and wife Sylvia were present along with their granddaughter Ana. First time attending were Ivan J. Ulrich, Jake Garcia, and his friend Hilah Smith. Four guests attending were friends and relatives of Ray and Irene Esparza. There were 12 lodge members and seven guests present.

Lodge 91, Crosby held its first quarter meeting of 2012 at the Dairy Queen in Crosby on Saturday, March 3.

All officers were present with approximately seven members. The meeting was called to order, and the minutes and treasurer’s report were read and approved.

Under new business, April 7 was voted on and approved as the scheduled date for the 2012 Paws Across Texas. The benefactor for the proceeds will be determined at a later date.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Malba Smesny informed Evelyn Wotipka that a check in the amount of $200 would be written to help support her with the HOME (Helping Our Military Endure) project.

Alvin Stasney, a member of Lodge 91 was presented a 75-year pin. Alvin

thanked SPJST for helping him get a start in life through the financial backing of his first home.

Members present voted to place an ad in the 2012 SPJST Convention Souvenir Book honoring Alvin’s 75year membership.

Last, President William Locke spoke briefly about the possibility of merging Lodge 91, Crosby with Lodge 65, Crosby and Lodge 156, Baytown within the next five years.

Handcrafted Czech Dolls on Display at SPJST Home Office

Lodge 182 Falls County plans spring events

SPJST Lodge 182, Falls County meeting was held at The Chicken Place in Marlin. We opened with the Pledge of Allegiance by youth club member Summer Frillou.

Old business was discussed.

Treasurer Darlene Komar reported on the balances in the lodge and youth accounts.

On Saturday, March 3, the state domino tournament was held at Lodge 47, Seaton. March 17 is our bowling social at 3 p.m. We will meet at Westview Lanes in Waco on Waco Drive.

This is for members only. Visitors are welcome, but they must pay own way.

March 18 is the District Two Spring

Meeting in Beyersville and will include an Easter egg hunt and egg decorating contest.

Prizes will be awarded for best decorated egg. Registration is at 1 p.m. The meal cost is $2 to $3.

Also there will be a fund raiser selling candy bars for $1 each from March 1 through the end of March.

The State 42 Domino Tournament is at Lodge 6, Cottonwood on April 7.

On April 15, we will meet at the zoo at 1 p.m. with a picnic afterwards; bring your own lunch.

In May, there will be a bake sale.

The speaker for animal control didn’t show up.

Falls County Hospital needs donations for cheeseburger plates. Cost for the plates will be $6. Terry Nutt needs a heart transplant.

Eleven youth and one visitor went to the skating party.

Lodge 183 Arlington reports on March meeting

The monthly meeting was held and called to order at 7 p.m. on Monday, March 12, 2012, at Lodge 183, located at 3100 Pleasant Valley Drive in Arlington, Texas. Roll of officers was called, and all were present except Second Vice President Dorothy Adamek. Present were President Ann Pustejovsky, First Vice President Ella Mikeska, Financial Secretary Angeline Stiborek, Secretary/Reporter Darlene Hollingsworth, Fraternal Activities Coordinator Debra Daniel, Treasurer Annette Cepak, Youth Leader Kay Weeks, and Trustees Rita Mardis and Raymond Mikeska.

Our thoughts and prayers go to Rudy Rejcek; Katelyn Daniel; Janie and Rudy Rejcek’s daughter Sandra; Robert and Pat Sill’s daughter Kelly; Dorothy Adamek is having hip replacement surgery on March 29; Annette Cepak has recovered from knee surgery; and Daniel and Mary Ann Roznovsky’s granddaughter Emily had surgery on her jaw.

The Pledge of Allegiance was recited, and a prayer of silence was observed for all those who are ill or who have recently been in the hospital.

Minutes were read from February’s meeting by Secretary/Reporter Darlene Hollingsworth. There were no corrections. All approved the minutes from February as read.

President Ann Pustejovsky gave the bar report. Ann stated that for February, we had 12 bingos and two rentals.

Financial Secretary Angeline Stiborek had no insurance report.

Debra Daniel gave the fraternal activities coordinator’s report. Debra stated this is the last month for contributions for the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive. SPJST cookbooks are still available for purchase. April 7 is the State 42 Domino Tournament in Cottonwood. The Bloomin’ Temple Festival is scheduled April 21 in Temple. The car show will also be downtown on April 21. The District Three Spring Meeting is April 22 in Cottonwood. The End of Summer Getaway and golf tournament is August 10 to 12 at the Holiday Inn in Corpus Christi.

The State Horseshoe Tournament has been rescheduled to May 12.

Kay Weeks gave the youth club report. Kay stated that she, Debra, Ann, and Katelyn attended the Youth Development Workshop Saturday, February 25 at SPJST Home Office in Temple. They toured the Czech Heritage Museum which was very nice, and there was a Czech Veterans’ Wall of Home downstairs in the Home Office to view. Saturday, March 24 and Sunday, March 25 is the Race with Wishes in Las Colinas. Debra and Kay will attend the Youth Leaders Workshop at the Home Office which is scheduled for Saturday, March 24 and Sunday, March 25. Saturday, April 14 is the Komen Tarrant Race for the Cure. Sunday, April 22 is the District Three Spring Meeting scheduled at Lodge 6, Cottonwood.

Daniel Roznovsky made a motion to advertise with a full page ad. Ed Fitzgerald seconded. All were in favor. Ann stated to be sure to fill out your volunteer hours which are now due.

Family Night—March 30 Family night is scheduled for Friday, March 30. The Men’s Club of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church will supply the fish, hush puppies, and fries. Please bring your favorite side dish and come and enjoy the hospitality!

Birthdays for the month of March are Cindy Boyd on the 9th, Katy, Tommy, and Gena Weeks on the 18th, and Rachel Reed and Kimberly Culliton, both on the 19th. We celebrated the birthdays with ice cream! Happy birthday to all of you! Thank you, Ann, for the ice cream!

Lodge 187 Round Rock learns about Texas singers

A big thank you to Jennave Fuchs for providing the entertainment. We talked about all the mountain music singers and songwriters that are all from Texas. It was a huge list of people. I had no idea that Texans were so talented!

We also discussed our Join Hands Day project . . . and we are now set, and forms will be sent in.

Everyone really liked the new Every Day Hero pin.

A March anniversary will be celebrated by Greg and Jennifer McCarthy anniversary on the 17th, and Mathieu Mason McCarthy will be born on March 12.

Meeting Date Changes Due to Easter and Mother’s Day, we have changed some meeting dates.

April’s meeting has been moved to Sunday, April 1. May’s meeting has been moved to Sunday, May 6.

Lodge 246, Morgan’s Point met on Monday, March 5, 2012.

We had several guests that we want to thank for coming – Tim Hays, Todd Brinker, T.J. Brinker, Tom Edwards, District Two Director Bobby Wuensche and wife Ruth Ann, and David Nauert.

Tom Edwards, Chairman of Morgan’s Point Economic Development Corporation, spoke about the proposed Trails of Morgan’s Point. This is a great opportunity for Lodge 246 members to get involved. Plans include a nature trail, paddling trails, running routes, 5K loop, and 10K loop. This is all new for Morgan’s Point. Todd Brinker and TJ Brinker were present on behalf of the Boy Scouts. They are hoping that the Scouts and Lodge 246 can work together to beautify Morgan’s Point. The project will involve voluntary help, Eagle Scout projects, Parks and Wildlife, and the Corps of Engineers to make this all a reality.

Let’s get together, and make it happen.

Then, it was on to our regular meeting. The meeting was called to order by the honorable President James Lee, III at 6:30 p.m. at Best Quality Meats in Temple.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Charlie Herendon reported on the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive; preregister by April 2 for the State 42 Domino Tournament to be held April 7 at Lodge 6, Cottonwood; and April 21 is the Bloomin’ Temple Festival and car show.

Youth Leader Trish reported on planning several fundraisers this year to send our growing group of youth members to camp. They plan to sell Scentsy to raise money for transportation so all kids can ride together. Bake sales are also coming.

Bobby Wuensche spoke saying he would like to serve another four years.

He talked about the upcoming SPJST Convention in June saying that it is very important to listen to all the changes being proposed to the by-laws as reported in the Vestnik. He wants our delegates to pay close attention and speak up!

Lodge 258, Seguin supports 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund

Lodge 258, Seguin, met February 26, 2012, at the Texas Lutheran University Alumni Student Center with 13 members and one guest present.

President Chester Jenke called the meeting to order and led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance. Members remained standing for a moment of silence in remembrance of the military and our departed members.

A letter was read about the District Seven Spring Meeting which will be hosted by Lodge 107, Floresville.

Nine members of our lodge will be attending the meeting.

Correspondence from the SPJST Home Office was read concerning our lodge’s refund.

The lodge’s and youth’s financial records were audited by the committee, and all were found to be in order.

The fraternal activities coordinator’s report was given by Stephanie Mills. Members should be thinking about a project for Join Hands Day which is May 5.

The lodge voted to donate $50 to the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive. They also voted to buy a onehalf page advertisement in the official SPJST Convention Souvenir Book for $60.

Happy birthday wishes to Kora Johnston who celebrated her 9th birthday on February 8. Kora received $5 for attending the meeting the month of her birthday. Congratulations! There were no anniversaries in March.

After the meeting was adjourned, everyone enjoyed a pizza party. The pizza was provided by the lodge, and delicious desserts were provided by members.

Next Meeting—April 22 The next meeting will be April 22 at the TLU Alumni Student Center in Seguin. A potluck meal will be served following the meeting. We hope to see you there.

Our March theme was “Leaping Leprechauns.” Thanks to Jeraldine Becan and Deanna Houpy for the St. Patrick’s and leprechauns. They were lovely St. Patrick decorations.

President Deanna Houpy called the meeting to order.

Estelle Smith led us in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, and we remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of our deceased Sister Anne (Tupy) Zvolanek, who at age 99 1/2 years old, was an original charter member and past president of the Krouzek, and Sister Floy Commilla (Holt) Pokladnik, who was one of our longtime members.

Recording Secretary Carole Faraizl read the minutes of February’s meeting, and they were approved as read.

Treasurer Jeraldine Becan gave the February report, and it was accepted as read.

Deanna read correspondence including a note from Anna Marie Eszlinger resigning as vice president due to health problems. She will still be a member and hopes to come to the meetings. A letter was received from Martha Klecka of the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas Board of Directors stating CEFT in collaboration with the College of Music at University of North Texas announced the arrival of the Stribrnanka Band that will perform at Sokol Zizka’s 100th anniversary on Sunday, March 4. A thank you letter was received from the Dallas Life Foundations for a donation in memory of Anne Zvolanek.

Bertha Podhrasky left the schedule of Sokol activities for 2012.

Want to Preserve Czech Heritage for Future Generations?

Your $10 Will Make a Difference.

We all know that the Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center depends on donations and grants to survive. It has no other means of surviving except through the generosity of people and Foundations. Both are hard to come by because most believe that it is a part of SPJST. Not true! The Museum is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation—an entirely separate entity.

We had a $200,000 challenge grant sometime back to help with the renovation of the Hanus

Building to house the Czech Heritage Museum, but to receive this grant, we had to raise $400,000 in donations or pledges. This was a tall order, but my challenge to you today is one that we can easily do. I am challenging each of you to send $10 or more to help pay the balance of a $500,000 note due SPJST which represents the funds needed to complete the renovation of the Hanus Building.

Since Helen Hegwood and I came on the Board, we have worked diligently to acquire funds to reduce the principal of the SPJST note. There are only four months until the SPJST Convention, and wouldn’t it be great if we could report that our note had been paid “in full.” It can be with your help! Without sounding like a television evangelist, if you want us to stay on the air, send money — I say, if you believe that the Museum should be preserved so children now and future generations may learn and appreciate the hardships, talents, contributions to our freedom, and the impact Texans of Czech descendants have made all over the world, you will send money to: Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center 119 West French Temple, Texas 76501

I would be remiss by not thanking the lodges and people who have already made contributions to lower the principal of this note. They have been so generous, and at the end of this Challenge on May 31, your names and the lodges will be listed in the Věstník.

It was with pride and interest that I read the article written by Bill and

Effie Rosene about Louis Hanus. Recall, Louis and Oleta Hanus donated the building in which the Museum is now housed and our debt is occasioned only by the necessary renovations.

Prior to Oleta’s death, she contributed another large sum to the Museum.

Sometimes, I write notes about things I have heard or am thinking about in a little notebook. I am sure I didn’t author this, but let me share it with you, i.e.

My name and place, and my tomb, all forgotten; The brief race of time well and patiently run: So let me pass away, peacefully, and silent; Only remembered by what I have done.

What I spent, I lost; What I possessed is left to others; What I gave away remains the only thing of eternal value That I have left the world.

Very appropriate for Louis and Oleta Hanus! Their committed and philanthropic spirits live on and will never be forgotten. How long will we be remembered?

Fun facts about earthworms

(MS) There are more than 2,700 different types of earthworms residing on the planet. Earthworms are often known to be workhorses in the garden, helping to aerate and fertilize the soil while filling it with nutrients. Earthworms recycle materials like dead leaves and decaying animals so new plant seedlings can grow and have the process begin anew.

Worms have been around for 120 million years — one of the few species of insects that have stood the test of time. In just one acre of soil, there may be a million or more earthworms turning over the soil and chewing on organic matter. Without earthworms, most plants would not thrive. Earthworms have mucous covering their bodies in order to stay moist. This helps them to breathe through their skin. You may have noticed that after it rains worms appear on sidewalks and outside of their underground burrows. This is not because they are drowning underground, but because the environment is moist after it rains, making it more conducive for worms to breathe and move around to find mates. Normally the dry conditions above ground make them dry out and die.

Earthworms can be remarkable creatures to watch. Contrary to popular belief, worms do have a mouth and an opposite end for waste removal that is not interchangeable.

In Memoriam

In Memory of Joe R. Pokorny

Joe R. Pokorny was born Friday, January 23, 1925, in Taylor, Texas, the son of Joe A. and Annie (Hruska) Pokorny.

He was a farmer and rancher who always took pride in his cattle and in being a retired security guard from Joe R. Pokorny We s t i n g h o u s e Corporation. He loved to fish, play dominoes, and spend time with his family and friends. He was a World War II veteran and was a lifelong member of the Taylor Brethren Church. He was also a member of the American Legion and SPJST Lodge 48, Beyersville.

Joe passed into the loving arms of his Lord and Saviour on Thursday, March 8, 2012, at the age of 87 years, one month, and 14 days.

He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Viola Pokorny of Georgetown; children Dennis Pokorny and wife Theresa, Gail Johle, and Karen Miller and husband Kenneth; grandchildren Kristi Susan and husband Joey, Darrin Svehlak, Trey Johle, Brandi Tull and husband Ryan; stepgrandchildren Michele Elkins and family, Melissa Bradley Edgar and family; and Mitzi Hutchens and family; great-grandchildren Ashley, Amber, and Austin Susan, Zachary and Blake Johle, and Abigail and Tripp Tull.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents; and sister Elsie Faltesek.

Funeral service was held at 3 p.m., Saturday, March 10 at Taylor Brethren Church in Taylor.

Expression of Sympathy

SPJST Lodge 8, Weimar officers and members extend their deepest sympathy to the family and friends of FRANK C. GRUNEWALD. Frank C. Grunewald, 74, passed away February 3, 2012.

He was born September 12, 1937, to Otto and Agnes (Melnar) Grunewald in Colorado County.

He was married to Marjorie Marie Stary on October 12, 1963, at St. Joseph’s Church in Moulton by Father John C. Bily.

Frank Grunewald Frank went to Weimar High School and later joined the Army in October 1960. He then went to Germany for 18 months.

He was a member of the American Legion, Knights of Columbus for 41 years and was made an honorary life member, and SPJST Lodge 8, Weimar for 58 years and received the Lifetime Achiever Award in 2005.

Frank was a truck driver for MG Egg, Herder Truck Lines, and Maxims. He retired from truck driving in 2002.

After he retired, Frank enjoyed picking pecans, helping his neighbors, walking, going to the casinos, and drinking coffee with his buddies at Fishbeck’s every morning Frank and Marjorie were ushers at St. Michael Catholic Church in Weimar.

He is survived by wife Marjorie, whom he was married to for 48 years; daughter Marshell; granddaughters Amanda of Tyler and Kyra of Waco; brother Raymond Grunewald and wife Evelyn of Weimar; sister Faye Guenther of El Campo; nephew John Guenther and wife Rachel of Victoria; nieces Shannon Williamson of Victoria, Kimberly Elstner and husband Craig of Weimar, and Kelli Wilson of Richmond; great-nieces Addison and Avery Elstner; and great-nephews Cayden Wilson and Joshua Williamson.

Frank was preceded in death by his parents; infant granddaughter Stacey DeLaRosa; and brother-in-law Ronnie Guenther.

Rosary led by Father John C. Bily was held February 5 at Hubbard Funeral Home at 7 p.m.

Funeral service was held February 6 at St. Michael’s with Father John C. Bily officiating. Interment followed at St. Michael’s Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Dennis Wagner, Mark Melnar, Craig Elstner, John Guenther, Dwayne Fishbeck, and Lee Haase. Honorary pallbearers were Kermit Thuemler, Robert Ulrich, Lawrence Addicks, Donald Stavinoha, coffee buddies at Fishbeck’s, and Thomas Weimer.

May our departed brother rest in peace.

Section Lodge 6 Cottonwood youth to celebrate Easter on April 1

Dear Readers, SPJST Lodge 6, Cottonwood Youth Club held its regular monthly meeting on Sunday, March 4, 2012, at 1:30 p.m. There were six members present.

We will make Easter bags for the rest home. The youth will put them together at the next meeting, and the date to deliver will be announced at the meeting.

The youth will have a drawing at the annual Easter party on Sunday, April 1. The youth will present a short program followed by an Easter egg hunt. A fried chicken meal will then be served. We look forward to seeing everyone.

The youth will hold their monthly meeting at 1:30 p.m. on April 1. See you all there.

Lodge 17 New Tabor youth: fun on spring break

Dear Vestnik Readers, My March has been very busy. It started with us dancing the beseda at the State Capitol for Texas Independence Day. Then, we had our monthly meeting, and I won a door prize. Afterwards, I had baseball practice.

For spring break, I went to my aunt Cheryl’s in Granbury and spent a few days with my cousins. We had a blast!

We even got our faces painted. My cousin and I were fierce tigers. Hope you all enjoyed your spring break, also.

Lodge 25, Ennis youth excited about paycheck

Work and school seems to be all I do now except that I’m now on spring break. It’s loads of fun working with my mom at Polyguard Products for a couple quick bucks. Well, not really quick—more or less normal working hours until I start school again then going back to one to one and one-half hours, but hey—a paycheck is a paycheck. I can’t wait until I get my first paycheck. Yea! It’s gonna be my biggest one yet . . . ahhhh . . . so can’t wait.

I’m going to have a new sister soon—can’t wait either! My niece Aubrie and my nephew Camron— soon-to-be mine anyway—they’re so cute. I love them so much.

Lodge 30, Taiton Youth Club reports on March meeting

Dear Vestnik Readers, Lodge 30, Taiton Youth Club held its regular monthly meeting on February 26, 2012, at Taiton Community Center. The meeting was called to order by President Allison Fucik. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited, followed by the SPJST motto, and prayer.

Secretary Ryan Drapela read the roll call of members. He then read minutes from the January and February meetings.

The treasurer’s report was read, and the dues report was given.

Old Business The Youth Development Workshop was help on February 25. Our lodge had no one who attended.

The call-in meeting is set for March 5.

District Six Spring Meeting will be held in Moravia on March 4. Bring a spring decoration or plant for the raffle. Registration will begin at 11 a.m.

Taiton Altar Society fried chicken dinner is on March 11. We will work the cake walk, and each family is asked

to bring a cake.

Leaders-in-Training Retreat is set for June 7 to 9 at Cooper Farm.

May 5 is Join Hands Day.

Youth Leader Report Mrs. Bubela informed all members that they are asked to bring a spring decoration for the raffle at the District Six Spring Meeting on March 4. She reminded everyone to read the rules for the egg decorating contest.

Next Meeting—April 1 Our next meeting will be held on April 1 at Taiton Community Center.

This will be the community center’s Easter egg hunt and hamburger supper.

The youth are asked to be at the hall by 4 p.m. to help with games and the hunt.

They will serve the hamburger supper after the hunt. The youth meeting will follow at around 6 p.m. with the adult meeting following the youth.

The meeting was then adjourned.

Lodge 40 El Campo-Hillje Youth Club reports on March meeting

The March 11, 2012, meeting of SPJST Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje Youth Club was called to order at 10:48 a.m. by Treasurer Cynthia Garcia at Mr. Gatti’s with swimming afterwards. Cynthia Garcia led the Pledge of Allegiance and SPJST Youth Club Motto. We remained standing for a moment of silent prayer for the good of our members and friends.

The register was read. Present were seven members, one guest, and two adults. The minutes were read with no corrections or additions.

Correspondence from Temple is to have five new members this year.

The treasurer’s report was read, and everything was up-to-date.

Visitor was Elaina Ortiz.

New business included Join Hands Day project. We will clean the SPJST hall on May 5 and have a meeting. For our next meeting, we will meet April 14, and we will assist Carmen Kocurek with cleaning the highway. We did the Vestnik project on hydration.

Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Participate in Youth Development Workshop

Several youth members from Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Club showed up on February 25, 2012, at the SPJST Home Office in Temple for the Youth Development Workshop. We all learned a little more about State Youth Leader Frank Horak, had some pizza, and took a tour of the Czech Heritage Museum across

the street from the Home Office and the Czech Veterans’ Wall of Honor located on the ground floor of the Home Office.

We had a raffle at the District Six Spring Meeting in Moravia. Six members participated in the egg decorating contest. Carmen donated two Coke packs.

The president asked the youth leader to report. Youth Leader Cathy will attend training in Temple on March 24; the call-in meeting is April 2; camp tee-shirts are available; Youth Leader Cathy said thank you for doing well at GVNH and visiting with Allan Bacak and learning words in Czech from the Vestnik lesson as a Czech heritage project this morning.

Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Club plans activities

We had our meeting on March 4, 2012. Present were 23 members, two guests, and three new members, and we celebrated seven March birthdays.

Our first order of business was a plan for Join Hands Day. A vote was taken, and we decided to start working on a plan to help make improvements on Star Hall. I am looking for someone who is a contractor or who knows a contractor who would be willing to help us estimate how much paint we will need and maybe guide us in proper technique when it comes to painting certain areas of the hall. If you know of someone who may be willing to help,

please let me know as soon as possible.

Youth members agreed to take out a $20 ad in the SPJST Convention Souvenir Book that will be distributed to delegates and visitors at the convention.

Angelina Ringwald made a motion that the youth club collect toys again for Toys for Tots. We did good last year, but I think we can do better this year. So the next time you see a sale or come across good deals, remember to

April 1—Meeting, Easter Egg Hunt April 1 is our next meeting, and our lodge will be honoring 50-year members. We will have a meal and an Easter egg hunt. I am asking each family to bring some candy to fill the eggs for hiding. Youth members will fill the eggs while the adults have their meeting. Afterwards, we will have our Easter egg hunt so don’t forget your baskets.

We also planned on having a social on April 13. Youth members will be visiting the Planetarium in Killeen.

Congratulations to our members for their many activities: Tanner Wood for his mutton busting at the San Angelo Stock Show; Cammi Teplicek for being on a basketball team going to state competition this week; Ana Fuentes and Sutton Schwertner participating in track at school; and Sarah Booher, Megan Booher, Tanner Wood, Hunter Wood, Hunter Teplicek, Hutson Teplicek, and Cade Vinson for participating in baseball. We do have a very active group!

All youth were also given a wooden egg to decorate for the kraslice egg contest at the District Two Spring Meeting.

Dear SPJST, I got to draw on a paper bag and color it at our meeting. Mrs. Beverly is taking these bags to Meals on Wheels for people to see my drawing.

I drew a John Deere tractor and a rainbow and colored both of them. It sure was fun.

529 College Savings Plans

529 college savings plans are tax-advantaged college savings vehicles and one of the most popular ways to save for college today.

Much like the way 401(k) plans revo- James L. Lee, III lutionized the world of retirement savings a few decades ago, 529 college savings plans have revolutionized the world of college savings. As of June 2011, total assets in college savings plans reached an all-time high of $169.5 billion.

A brief history

529 plans were first authorized by Congress in 1886. Known officially as “qualified tuition programs,” 529 plans are so named because they are governed by section 529 of the Internal Revenue Code.

Tax advantages and more 529 college savings plans offer a unique combination of features that no other college savings vehicle can match:

• Federal tax advantages: Contributions to your account grow tax deferred and earnings are tax free if the money is used to pay the beneficiary’s qualified education expenses. (The earnings portion of any withdrawal not used for college expenses is taxed at the recipient’s rate and subject to a 10 percent penalty.)

• State tax advantages: Many states offer income tax incentives for state residents, such as a tax deduction for contributions or a tax exemption for qualified withdrawals.

• High contribution limits: Most plans let you contribute over $300,000 over the life of the plan.

• Unlimited participation: Anyone can open a 529 college savings plan account, regardless of income level.

• Professional money management: College savings plans are offered by states, but they are managed by designated financial companies who are responsible for managing the plan’s underlying investment portfolios.

• Flexibility: Under federal rules, you are entitled to change the beneficiary of your account to a qualified family member at any time as well as rollover the money in your 529 plan account to a different 529 plan once per year without income tax or penalty implications.

• Wide use of funds: Money in a 529 college savings plan can be used at any college in the United States or abroad that’s accredited by the Department of Education and, depending on the individual plan, for graduate school.

• Accelerated gifting: 529 plans offer an excellent estate planning advantage in the form of accelerated gifting. This can be a favorable way for grandparents to contribute to their grandchildren’s education.

Specifically, individuals can make a lump-sum gift to a 529 plan of up to $65,000 ($130,000 for married couples) and avoid gift tax, provided the gift is treated as having been made in equal installments over a five-year period and no other gifts are made to that beneficiary during the five years.

Choosing a college savings plan Although 529 college savings plans are a creature of federal law, their implementation is left to the states. Currently, there are over 50 different college savings plans available because many states offer more than one plan.

You can join any state’s 529 college savings plan, but this variety may create confusion when it comes time to select a plan. To make the process easier, it helps to consider a few key features:

• Your state’s tax benefits: A majority of states offer some type of income tax break for 529 college savings plan participants, such as a deduction for contributions or tax-free earnings on qualified withdrawals. However, some states limit their tax deduction to con-

tributions made to the in-state 529 plan only. So make sure to find out the exact scope of the tax breaks, if any, your state offers.

• Investment options: 529 plans vary in the investment options they offer. Ideally, you’ll want to find a plan with a wide variety of investment options that range from conservative to more growth-oriented to match your risk tolerance. To take the guesswork out of picking investments appropriate for your child’s age, most plans offer agedbased portfolios that automatically adjust to more conservative holdings as your child approaches college age. (Remember, though, that any investment involves risk, and past performance is no guarantee of how an investment will perform in the future.)

• Fees and expenses: Fees and expenses can vary widely among plans, and high fees can take a bigger bite out of your savings. Typical fees include annual maintenance fees, administration and management fees (usually called the “expense ratio”), and underlying fund expenses.

529 prepaid tuition plans—a distant cousin There are actually two types of 529 plans—college savings plans and prepaid tuition plans. The tax advantages are the same, but the account features are very different. A prepaid tuition plan lets you prepay tuition at participating colleges at today’s prices for use by the beneficiary in the future. The following chart describes the main differences:

• Reputation of financial institution: Make sure that the financial institution managing the plan is reputable and that you can reach customer service with any questions.

With so many plans available, it may be helpful to consult an experienced financial professional who can help you select a plan and pick your plan investments, giving you peace of mind. In fact, some 529 college savings plans are advisorsold only, meaning that you’re required to go through a designated financial advisor to open an account. Always carefully read the 529 plan issuer’s official materials before investing.

Account mechanics Once you’ve selected a plan, opening an account is easy. You’ll need to fill out an application, where you’ll name a beneficiary and select one or more of the plan’s investment portfolios to which your contributions will be allocated. Also, you’ll typically be required to make an initial minimum contribution, which must be made in cash or a cash equivalent.

Thereafter, most plans will allow you to contribute as often as you like.

Zpráva ze schůze u řádu 54 ve Westu, Tx.

Pravidelná čtvrtletní schůze našeho řádu Jaromír ve Westu ve státě Texasu se konala dne 2. března 2012 za poměrně hojné účasti členstva. President řádu Freddie Kaluža zahájil schůzi, složili jsme přísahu vlajce, která stojí pro naši republiku a uctili jsme památku odešlého bývalého starosty města Westu Adolfa Mušky a Gail Matúš, která pracovala po mnoho roků jako paní Mikulášová pro naše děti.

Zápis z minulé schůze přečetla tajemnice Janice Kaluža a zápis byl přijat tak, jak byl čten.

Naše kordinátorka bratrských záležitostí Jean Maléř upozornila na několik podniků, které jsou pořádány našimi řády anebo některé z nich mohou členové jednoty využít ke svému prospěchu, včetně turnaje v dominu v Seaton, Tx., pěkné dovolené v Corpus Christi v srpnu každého roku, autosalon v Temple, Tx., v květnu máme si pomáhat spojenými silami, a zajímavá bude prohlídka tak zvaných malovaných kostelů v Texasu, o kterých již mnoho pisatelů psalo.

Naše pokladní Mary Lou Mynář podala pěknou zprávu o našem hospodaření a čísla se zvětšují, to hodně uspokojuje.

Freddie Kaluža oznámil, že máme nového člena, vánoční besídka byla velmi pěkná, jídlo bylo velmi chutné a všichni se těšili z toho, že vyhráli cenu v losování, vyhráli jsme cenu na banketu v Killeen, Tx.. Současné členstvo musí sledovat narození vnuků a vnuček anebo dalšího člena rodiny a hned o nich oznámit zprávu naším agentům, kteří pak přijdou a přihlásí je za nového člena. V červnové schůzi bude mít uctění padesátiletého výročí členství u naší jednoty, oslavenci jsou Lillian M. Mynář a Terry R. Soukup, oba z Westu, Tx., Pak jsme souhlasili s uveřejněním oznámky do konvenční knížky a věnovali částku pro studentské stipendium.

Příští schůze se bude konat dne 1. června 2012 a schůze by ukončena.

Losování vyhráli manželé Jan a Marcela Vaculíkovi. Členstvo pak setrvalo v družné zábavě při dobrém pohoštění do pozdních nočních hodin.

Stinky cheese sweet-shop opens in Loštice

It is the country’s most smelly specialty – Olomoucké tvarůžky – dubbed by foreign visitors as “the stinky cheese of Olomouc” is not something you can easily overlook.

Its pungent odor hits you the minute you open the fridge and will render you a social outcast several hours after consuming it. However, many consider it to be one of the country’s biggest delicacies; and the Czech Republic fought and won a six-year war with Germany and Austria over a protected geographical status trademark.

The soft, gummy yellow cheeses which are sold in packs of five – to be consumed with beer or wine – date back to the 15th century when they were produced by hand from sour cottage cheese and salt. By the second half of the 18th century, they were so popular that Emperor Leopold II insisted they be served at his wedding feast and in 1872, they are reported to have won second and third prize at the very first fair of dairy products in Vienna. Marie Pekařová who is a guide at the Olomoucké Tvarůžky Museum explains that the name is somewhat misleading – the pungent cheese is actually made in the small town of Loštice, which is a stone’s throw from Olomouc.

“That’s because the cheese was always taken to Olomouc to be sold at open air markets and later in stone shops. Olomouc was a bigger town, better known and since it was sold there it became known as Olomouc cheese. Today, its fame has travelled far. Our cheese museum has around 4,000 visitors annually, including foreign visitors. We have had visitors from all around Europe, but also Japan, China, Chile, and Australia.

More recently we have had groups of students from the United States.”

The AW Loštice company which makes the delicacy to this day is still based in the small town of Loštice from where vans set out daily to deliver the unique product to outlets around the country. Marie Pekařová again:

“According to the first written records, large scale production of this delicacy started back in 1876 when Josef Wessels opened the first “Olomouc cheese” company in Loštice. The company stayed in family hands and was later run by his son Alois Wessels. By the way, the company name is still Alois Wessels though now it uses the abbreviation A.W. After the fall of communism descendants of the former owners got the company back in the restitution process and now produce 2,000 tons of Olomouc cheeses annually.”

Taylor Czech Chorus to award scholarship

The Taylor Czech Chorus has established a $500 scholarship to be awarded to a graduating high school senior of Czech descent. The selected recipient will have the scholarship paid to the accredited college or univerity of their choice.
