—Pasadena Weekly Journal Of Business April 12—Deadline for By-Law Recommendations and Recommendations to Finance Committee The deadline to submit recommendations to the SPJST By-Law and Finance Committees is Thursday, April 12. Convention Delegates and members, I encourage you to read your by-laws and get to know this important document that governs our Society. Thoroughly reading the by-laws from cover to cover only takes about an hour, and what an investment it is. If you need a copy of the by-laws, contact Supreme Lodge Secretary-Treasurer Leonard Mikeska’s department at the Home Office.

Delegates at the 31st SPJST Convention in June will review the bylaws article by article.

Only recommendations that are signed

and submitted to the By-Law Committee by April 12 may be deliberated at the convention.

Recommendations will be published in the Vestnik in the “Convention Corner” section. Recommendations can be submitted to any By-Law Committee member listed in the left column on this page.

Two by-law recommendations appear on page 4 of this week’s Vestnik.

Recommendations for any type of financial considerations, donations, etc. are also due by April 12 to the Finance Committee. Recommendations may be submitted to any Finance Committee member listed in the left column on this page.

Spring Meetings Begin— You Are Invited!

District spring meetings begin this Sunday. Meeting dates and locations are listed on the front page. Please make an effort to attend your district’s meeting. You will learn about SPJST and your district, see and meet people from other lodges, eat a delicious meal, and have some fun!

If you have never been to an SPJST event, that’s OK—come on out to the spring meeting and get to know SPJST!

Bloomin’ Temple—Czech-Style SPJST will once again host the car show at the Bloomin’ Temple Festival on Saturday, April 21. A special attraction this year will be exhibits and Czech fun provided by the Czech Heritage Museum. Mark the date and watch for details!

SPJST Mortgage Interest Modification Offer

Members with SPJST high interest rate mortgage loans have an opportunity to have their interest rate modified to the current offered interest rate. The loan must be current with all payments and taxes be paid to date. The modification program is currently available until March 31, 2012. There are no closing costs or fees for modifying a qualifying SPJST mortgage.

Residential mortgages with maturities up to 20 years can be modified to 4.75 percent. Residential mortgages with terms over 20 years can be modi-

fied to 5 percent. There is also an offer to modify rates on SPJST farm and commercial mortgage loans to rates offered on new farm and commercial mortgage loans. Temple Brethren Church is hosting guest speaker David Rubin. Mr. Rubin will make his presentation on Tuesday, March 13, 2012, at 5:30 p.m.

Mr. Rubin is the former mayor of Shiloh in Israel. He is the founder of the Shiloh Israel Children’s Fund. He is also the author of two books: God, Israel, and Shiloh and most recently, The Islamic Tsunami. District Six Spring Meeting Sunday, March 4, 2012

The District Six Spring Meeting will be Sunday, March 4, 2012, at the Church Hall in Moravia. Lodge 23, Moravia will host the event with registration starting at 11 a.m. A delicious catered meal will be served at 12 noon.

All lodges attending are asked to bring two desserts and a door prize.

The audit and nominating committees will meet at 10:30 a.m. The members of the audit committee are Lois Ellis (32), Glenn Kaminsky (28), and Elmer Michna (184). The members of the nominating committee are Joseph Nezval (28) and Albert Olsovsky (23).

Immediately following the noon meal, special reports for District Six will be given. Those include the Czech

Heritage Museum, Education and Nature Center, Rest Homes, and Cemetery.

After the meeting is called to order, reports will be given by the standing committees, including By-Law, Publication, Finance, and Insurance. Official reports will be given from the Supreme Lodge, District Six Director, and the District Six State Field Representative.

The youth members are encouraged to participate in their club booths and the district egg decorating contest.

Lodge 15 Buckholts honors longtime members

We had a special meeting this month in celebration of our honored 50- and 75-year members who were receiving their pins.

President Douglas Williams called the meeting to order at 2 p.m. for we changed the time to Sunday afternoon instead of our regular Monday at 5 p.m. Doug asked our 75-year honoree Louise Sakewitz to lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance which was followed by a moment of silence in memory of our departed members.

For those attending who do not meet with us regularly, our president introduced the current officers, who are President Douglas Williams, Vice President Frank Tomascik, Treasurer Sandie Fischer, and Secretary Dorothy Tomascik. Doug also gave a little history of Lodge 15. Our building was constructed back in 1936. We are so proud that we have been able to keep it active all these years. We have some restoration plans, but we have them on hold right now waiting for the economy to improve.

All officers were present for the meeting. We had 13 members present and seven guests.

Hilda Burtis was recognized and congratulated on her recent 96th birthday. Hilda’s words were, “I had to work real hard to get this old.” She had already received her 75-year old pin earlier. She stated that she was the fourth person to reach the age of 96 in our lodge. It is remarkable that she is still in such good health, and if we need to know something that happened years ago, we can always ask Hilda. She will have the answer! Her memory is outstanding for her age.

She is still able to stay at home—what a blessing!

We want to thank Douglas Williams, Jr. for taking pictures for the occasion. We appreciate it so very much.

Honorary District Two Director Frank Klinkovsky spoke to us and brought us up-to-date on the current SPJST happenings. He also presented awards to the honorees. Lodge 24, Cyclone invites all to klobase dinner, TPMM dance

Get ready for some good food and good polka music!

Dust off your dancing shoes and mark your calendars for Sunday, March 4, 2012. The day will begin at 11 a.m. with a delicious klobase (sausage) plate with all the trimmings for only $8. I can already taste that “Green’s Sausage House” sausage, new potatoes, seasoned green beans, and our famous sauerkraut.

Those wanting to stay and do some dancing can purchase a dance ticket from the Texas Polka Music Museum for a donation of $10 per person.

Dancing will begin at 1 p.m. and continue until 6 p.m., with music by the Red Ravens of El Campo and the Praha Brothers of Temple.

There will be hourly door prize drawings, a silent auction, and a very limited live auction.

Beginning at 1 p.m., the kitchen workers at Flag Hall will start up their grill and begin to cook delicious hamburgers for those who may have come in late or want a little extra to keep them going throughout the day. There will also be sausage wraps at the kitchen and your favorite beverage available at the bar.

Lodge 24, Cyclone hosts Texas Polka Fest this Sunday

Dear Readers, There is a big event coming up at Lodge 24, Cyclone Flag Hall this Sunday, March 4. The Texas Polka Music Museum will hold its Annual Texas Polka Fest on this day. There will be music and dancing from 1 to 6 p.m. with the Red Ravens and the Praha Brothers providing the music. We will serve a meal from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

We are going to do sausage plates with kraut, green beans, new potatoes, peach halves, bread, and tea. Meal

will cost $8 per plate. Admission to the event is $10. Later in the day, we will sell hamburgers and sausage wraps.

Lodge 30, Taiton reports on February meeting

Dear Vestnik Readers, Lodge 30, Taiton held its regular monthly meeting on February 5, 2012, at the Taiton Community Center.

President Yvonne Marcaurele called the meeting to order at 1:35 p.m.

Members present recited the Pledge of Allegiance led by Bethany Baker. A moment of silence was observed for any sick or departed members.

Secretary Wanda Dorotik read the minutes from the December and January meetings. They were approved as read.

Treasurer Lisa Bubela gave her report on the financial standing of our lodge. She asked for any outstanding bills.

FAC Tommy Drapela was unable to attend so Vice President Debbie Krpec reported on the events occurring around the state. She reminded us of the upcoming Join Hands Day and asked everyone to be thinking of a

possible project for our lodge.

Youth Leader Lisa Bubela reported on the comings and goings of our youth program. She informed the members that our youth club won the District Six award at the SPJST Awards Banquet this past weekend.

For being the top youth club in District Six, we will be able to have a pizza party. The date will be set later. She reminded everyone that the District Six Spring Meeting will be in Moravia on March 4, and the youth have an opportunity to compete in the egg decorating contest. She also informed the members that the youth program will be hosting a leadership training at the Home Office in Temple on February 25, and anyone interested in going needs to contact her as soon as possible.

Congratulations to State Field Representative Karen Kaspar for being a Million Dollar Producer this past year.

We are very proud of her accomplishments.

Karen then gave a report on the sales for our lodge this year. She reported that we are off to a wonderful start so far. She encouraged the members to continue to give the sales agents new leads to continue to build our lodge.

Happy birthday was wished to Debbie Krpec. She celebrates on February 12.

Congratulations to Lloyd Srubar for being a 50-year member.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, February 26 at Taiton Community Center. The adults will meet at 1:30 p.m., and the youth meeting will follow.

Lodge Karel Jonáš No. 28, East Bernard meets March 4 in Moravia

Dear Members, The March meeting of Lodge Karel Jonas will be held in conjunction with the District Six Spring Meeting in Moravia on Sunday, the 4th of March.

It will be held either before or after the district meeting. There will not be a regular meeting in March.

As to the April meeting, it will be held on the first Sunday - the 1st - due

to Easter being on the second Sunday, the 8th. The May Mother’s Day and pin presentation meeting still is in the air for everything depends on “when?” the primary election is held. There will be more on both meetings later. At this writing, the first Sunday in May is looking better and better.

There was a fair quorum present in the February meeting. Several motions were made and passed. One was establishing a member appreciation meeting with appropriate meal.

The February meeting was so designated, and dinners were purchased from the American Legion Post 226 fundraiser.

Lodge 40 El Campo-Hillje reports on February meeting

Vice President called the meeting to order at 2 p.m. Pledge of Allegiance was recited, and a moment of silence was observed for the sick, deceased, and for the Armed Forces in our community.

Roll was called. Absent were President Allen Bacak, Treasurer Diane Seaman, and Trustee Brenda Cox. Ardis Bacak made a motion to accept the minutes as written in the Vestnik, and J.C. Kocurek seconded the motion. Motion carried. All other reports from the committees were accepted as read.

FAC thanked the kitchen workers and greeter for their work.

Next Meeting—March 14 The next meeting will be on March 14 at 12 noon. The lodge will have the meal catered, and the members are to bring the desserts.

Ardis Bacak made a motion that we make a donation toward fixing the road at Shiner Cemetery, and J.C. Kocurek seconded the motion. Motion carried.

Ardis Bacak made a motion to accept Gary Wayne Schoenfield as a new member to our lodge, and J.C. Kocurek seconded the motion. Motion carried.

There was no old business.

New Business Eight delegates were elected to represent Lodge 40 in District Six at the SPJST Convention in Killeen, Texas, on June 11, 12, and 13. The delegates are Ardis Bacak, Carmen Kocurek, J.C. Kocurek, Mary Ann Cerny, Jerry Gensler, Norma O’Canas, Dee Floyd, and Vlasta Bartos. Kathy Garcia made a motion to accept the delegates, seconded by Sheldon Holub. Motion carried.

“Happy Birthday” was sung for Brooke Bacak, Josephine Bacak, Carmen Kocurek, and Felix Garcia led by Ardis Bacak.

Anniversary wishes went to Allen and Josephine Bacak – 49 years; and Kenny and Mary Ann Cerny – 19 years.

The kitchen workers for the next meeting are Karen Holub, Brenda Cox, and J.C. Kocurek, the greeter.

Karen Kaspar was our guest speaker.

Attendance prizes were won by Colby Cerny and Josephine Brandt.

Lodge 54, West meets this Friday, March 2

The November 4, 2011, meeting of SPJST Lodge 54, West was called to order at 7 p.m. by President Wilburn Willis. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Mr. Willis followed by a moment of silence in memory of all our departed members and sick members.

All of our officers and sales agents were present except Secretary Jana Vaculik and Youth Leader Lisa Darnell. We had 17 members and guests present. President Willis welcomed all who were in attendance for the meeting.

The minutes of the last meeting were read by Janice Kaluza. Ronnie Kaluza made a motion to accept the minutes, and Yvonne Nors seconded the motion. Motion passed.

The treasurers’s report was presented by Mary Lou Mynar. Freddie Kaluza made a motion to accept the treasurer’s report, and Ronnie Kaluza seconded the motion. Motion passed.

FAC Jean Maler gave her report and let all members know about the Eighth Annual Bowling Tournament to be held February 11 in New Braunfels if they would like to attend. She let us know the order form for the new SPJST cookbooks was out, and you could order them for $18. There was a reminder and letter from Supreme Lodge to select a 2011 Fraternalist of the Year at our next meeting who will

She also reminded us of some information on scholarships and leadership grants for any senior in high school to apply for in the upcoming year and the deadline for applications is February 1, 2012. Janice Kaluza made a motion to accept Jean Maler’s report, and Annie Hlavenka seconded the motion. Jan Vaculik didn’t have anything to report at the meeting but let all members know he is publishing all his reports in the Vestnik. Freddie Kaluza made a motion to accept this, and Christine Bishop seconded the motion. Edward and Dovie Gallander were welcomed in as new members.

A motion was made by Ronnie Kaluza to accept this, and Lill Matus seconded the motion. Motion passed.

Old Business In old business, Freddie Kaluza brought the members up to date on our upcoming Christmas party to be held December 4, 2011. We will be having a fried chicken dinner with all the trimmings catered by our members S&S Catering. Santa and Mrs. Claus will be handing our treats to all the children. The Junior Historians would provide entertainment for the afternoon. We took a vote to give out door prizes to the adults for $800 and $200 for the children. A motion was made by Freddie Kaluza, and Ronnie Kaluza seconded the motion. Motion passed.

New Business In new business, we selected a Fraternalist of the Year for 2011 to represent our lodge at the annual banquet.

Freddie Kaluza made a motion to select Marcella Vaculik, and Mary Lou Mynar seconded the motion. No other fraternalists were selected, and motion passed. Marcella would have to fill out some paperwork and mail it in to the Home Office to compete against other lodges. Freddie Kaluza announced we now have an SPJST youth insurance certificate with a $10,000 death benefit available for ages zero to 18 with a $100 one-time pay which would cover you to age 25.

We encouraged all members to put out the word to our families and extend it out into the community. We selected delegates for the upcoming Convention to be held June 11 to 13, 2012, in Killeen. The eligible delegates would have had to attend at least three of our quarterly meetings. We are entitled to six delegates and 648 votes. The delegates to represent our lodge will be Mary Lou Mynar, Fred-

Lodge 80, Holland Hosts Chamber of Commerce Banquet

Lodge 80, Holland was the site of the Holland Area Chamber of Commerce banquet on Saturday evening, February 18, 2012. The banquet was well attended. Guest speaker for the evening was motivational speaker Lynette Kunz.

Kitchen chairman and head chef was Curtis Wolf. Kitchen support and servers were Helen Pajestka, Paula Weir, Carol Wolf, Frank Pajestka, Jr., Coleman Benner, Rita Spinn, Jewel Wolf, Silveria Tschoerner, Delvin Tschoerner, Clay Tschoerner, Youth Leader Christine Festa, and youth club members Nicole Festa, Alexis Festa, Jacob Horak, and Shelby Horak. Also helping were Assistant Youth Leader Connie Horak and State Youth Director Frank Horak.

The menu consisted of succulent pork loin, seasoned green beans, corn, mashed potatoes, rolls, salad, tea and coffee, and peach cobbler with ice cream for dessert.

Man of the Year was Henry Hegar, American Legion Post 526 Commander.

Woman of the Year was city librarian Holly Naizer, and Student of the Year was Erin Goodnight.

SPJST Lodge 80, Holland was proud to support the Holland Area Chamber of Commerce Banquet.

Lodge 81 Needville welcomes new members

The February 2012 meeting of Lodge 81, Needville was held on Sunday, the 19th. At 12 noon, President Vincent Newman gave a prayer of thanks. We had a meal of fried chicken. The members brought an assortment of vegetables and desserts.

Thanks to Darlene Blinka and her kitchen committee for getting everything set up for us. Also, thanks to everyone who brought all of the delicious food.

President Vincent Newman called the business meeting to order at 1 p.m.

Karen Rust led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. All officers answered the roll call. We had a moment of silence for departed members Gene Sebesta, Edna Woytek, and Annie Breskend.

Our thoughts and prayers are with their families and friends. Added to our sick list were Charlie and Joyce Pesak. We wish you both a speedy recovery.

Secretary Willie Mae Kuykendall read the minutes of our December meeting and the minutes of our January meeting. Since there were no corrections, they were approved as read.

Treasurer Bradley Stavinoha read his report, and it was approved as read.

Special Funds Chairman Tom Stavinoha read his report, and it was also approved as read.

Under old business, Special Funds Chairman Tom Stavinoha asked if he could buy the roses and the crape myrtle tree to enhance the grounds of our premises. It was voted and passed to allow him to make these purchases.

Under new business, we voted in four new members. They are Marie Heradi, David Heradi, Aubree Sepulveda, and Jayden Zwahr. We’re so happy to have you as new members and hope you come visit us soon.

President Vincent Newman reminded everyone of the upcoming SPJST Convention in Killeen. Our lodge voted to get a one-half page advertisement. Also, President Newman read a letter from Needville Little League baseball team asking if we would once again like to sponsor them. It was decided unanimously to sponsor them again. Vincent Newman also let everyone know that Join Hands Day will be on May 5 this year, and the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive continues. President Newman

also announced that Bradley Stavinoha received the top District Five sales agent award.

Under other business, Jeanette Newman said that she will get the scholarship information to the local newspapers. It was made into a motion to increase our scholarship amount. Also, Secretary Willie Mae Kuykendall made a motion to send money for the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive. She asked that we honor our 50-year and 75-year members at the April meeting.

Door prize winners were Bradley Stavinoha, Laura Ann Abschneider, Lenora Marek, and Ed Kuban. Congratulations to our lucky winners.

Lodge 84, Dallas needs your pledge

Dear Members, SPJST Lodge 84, Dallas needs your pledge. 2012 is the pivotal year for Lodge 84. We need your donation to the building fund and tax fund if you want us to continue in our lodge home.

Our goal is to raise $30,000 by June 30. Our 2009 pledge drive yielded $3,190 towards our goal. We need your donation, Please help.

Lodge 151 Wharton changes meeting location

The meeting place for the quarterly March meeting of Lodge 151, Wharton has been changed. SPJST Lodge 151, Wharton’s meeting will be held Monday, March 12, 2012, at the Wharton Depot Museum, located at 100 Sunset Street in Wharton, Texas.

A light meal, iced tea, and dessert will be served to the members at 6:30 p.m. Please call Carolyn Bucek (979) 532-1910. We need to know the number of members planning to attend in order to make arrangements for the meal.

The meeting will be held after the meal. Members with birthdays in January, February, and March will be honored.

Please note that the June and September meetings will also be held at the Wharton Depot Museum. The December meeting and social will be held in Hinze’s Bar-B-Que Meeting Room.

December Meeting Highlights Lodge 151, Wharton held the annual Christmas and quarterly meeting on December 12, 2011, at Hinze’s Bar-B-Que meeting room. A catered meal consisting of turkey, ham, sweet potatoes, green beans, and salad was served to 17 members and seven guests. Lodge members provided a variety of delicious deserts.

We were pleased to have as guests Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek, State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Chester Jenke and wife Colleen, District Six Director Michael Ahlstrom, and District Six State Field Representative Karen Kaspar.

A $100 donation was made to S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 2, Needville for items needed in the recreation center.

Members of Lodge 151 donated non-perishable items for SHARE. Birthday honorees were David Bucek, Alfred Sabrsula, Ruth Sabrsula, and Donna Vasek. FAC Charles Bucek presented each with a gift from the lodge.

50-Year Pins Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek presented 50-year pins to Tina Cannell, Mary H. Jones, and Frank Joe Preisler, Jr. Members who were unable to attend the meeting for the pin presentation were Richard J. Filip, Jacqueline Herschap, Jody E. Kopecky, and Edward N. Socha.

Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Herman of Houston, Texas, are pleased to announce the engagement and upcoming marriage of their daughter Kristi Ramsey to Shane Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Smith Jr. of Willis, Texas.

The bride-to-be is a 2004 graduate of St. Pius X High School and a 2008 graduate of the University of Texas Medical Branch. She is currently employed at Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital as a registered pediatric nurse.

The prospective groom is a 2002 graduate of Willis High School and a 2006 graduate of Texas A&M University. He is currently employed at Offshore Energy Services.

Kristi is the granddaughter of Louise Janda and the late Mr. Fred Janda of Houston.

A May 2012 wedding is planned for the couple at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church.

Ennis Sewing Circle

Ennis Sewing Circle met on February 9, 2012. Ann Clagett, Dorothy Prachyl, Eleanora Pelzel, and myself arrived around 8 a.m. As the Sokol Hall was getting an overhaul cleaning from top to bottom, we had to meet in the club room. The dining room floor was spotless and was shining like I haven’t seen in a long time. Our new Sokol President David Slovak is getting ready for the Czech Music Festival, the Mollie B Polka Party, the Ennis Polka Festival, and other events.

They are cleaning and painting walls, ceilings, air vents, polishing floors, and everything is really looking good.

I hope the people will notice.

Back to the Circle. We stretched Bessie Laznovsky’s really pretty quilt.

We didn’t have to arrange table and chairs as they were set up in the club room which was sort of nice. We may meet there more often.

Everyone was so happy to see Bessie Laznovsky. Bessie’s daughter Margie Hamilton brought her for a couple of hours. Bessie looked great.

We hope that she can stay longer next time. She was so sweet and went around and talked with everyone.

By lunchtime, we had 21 members and one guest Joe Ehrenberger. President Dorothy led us in prayer, and we all enjoyed a delicious lunch. As always, we had so many wonderful dishes, taco soup, cheese soup, two different corn breads, and many casserole dishes and desserts. Thank you, everyone, and thank you to our new kitchen committee. They did a great job in all areas — setting up, cleaning up, taking out trash, and checking all our supplies. Willy Matus, Ginny Svehlak, Dorothy J. Kudrna, Joyce Ehrenberger, and Libbie Vrla — you did great.

The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all, and a moment of silence was held for Anne Zvolanek - one of our longtime first members, Florence Vitovsky and Alvin Hubacek, friends of our members.

The minutes were read by Ann Clagett for Secretary Margaret because she had gone with her husband to the doctor. The treasurer’s report was given by the new Treasurer Dorothy Bobalek. Both were approved as read.

We recently had the opportunity to attend the American Farm Bureau Federation Convention in Honolulu, Hawaii. We were among 575 Texans and more than 6,000 from the United States in attendance. The tour of Pearl Harbor’s USS Arizona Memorial was emotional where names were posted of those who perished, possibly some of our ancestors by the names of House and Mann.

Some 400-plus Texans flew to Kona, located on the Big Island.

The airport was on the dry side of the island and looked barren due to the fact the total rainfall each year is from 10 to 15 inches compared to the wet side that receives about 100 inches per year. We were treated to a luau that had great entertainment and delicious food. A farm tour was scheduled that included an Abalone fish farm, a 20-acre coffee plantation, Parker Cattle Ranch Museum, and a macadamia nut factory. Whale

Sunshine Lady Eleanora had cards for us to sign. Libbie Wisniewski happy birthday; Anne Tupy, Libbie Wisniewski, and Agnes Dujka - sympathy cards. Eleanora announced February celebrants Anne Tupy, Libbie Wisniewski, and Sidney Bridewell.

We all sang to Sidney as she was present.

Scheduler Pat announced we will quilt for her in March; April - Ann Clagett; May - Joan Strunc; and June our Christmas quilt.

Thank you went out to Victoria Vlk for her donation to the Circle for quilting her quilt last month.

Six of us rented a car and drove to view beautiful waterfalls, lush vegetation, and a volcano giving off steam that had a red glow at the base that was beautiful at night.

We walked through a lava tube that was the result of a lava eruption. Coral was used to print names or messages on lumps of lava that lined the sides of the roads.

That was their graffiti that was really not that distracting.

Fruit stands were available that cut fresh pineapple and mangos as you waited. Fresh pineapple, that was “out of this world,” was served on most plates.

Electric fences surrounded the small fields of sweet potatoes. The sweet potatoes tasted like those here but were purple inside.

It was a fabulous trip!

Joyce told what a beautiful service it was. Anne was 99 and one-half years old. The preacher talked about things Anne had told him from her past.

When Anne was young, working in the fields on their farm with her father, and they would all get tired and wanted to stop for a rest, her father would start singing, “The Old Rugged Cross.” That was Anne’s favorite song, and it was sung for her at the funeral. Joyce said that it was a beautiful, touching service. Our sympathy goes out to all her family.

President Dorothy gave Lil Kosarek a beautiful cross from the Circle for the 15 years of service and all the other work Anne has done. Lil was surprised and thanked all for it.

Different fundraisers were discussed, but nothing decided on.

Everyone was to think about it. More discussion later.

Thank you to Irene Prachyl for recommending that we have a telephone committee. She volunteered to type one up. This is a good idea!

Joyce Ehrenberger announced that Dallas Sokol Hall will be celebrating its 100th anniversary on March 4.

Next month, the Mollie B Polka Party will be in Ennis at Sokol on the day we normally have the meeting March 8. It was discussed and decided we will meet on the third Thursday March 15. Everyone keep that in mind.

President Dorothy asked if anyone had anything cute to tell us. Ginny Svehlak remembers at Halloween time, she was telling her sister Mary Zabojnik’s granddaughter that she was dressing up. The granddaughter said my grandma is dressing as a cheetah, she had on a spotted blouse the color of a cheetah. It was really cute the way she told it. Kids say the cutest things.

I know my great-granddaughter Sarah does.

We missed Mildred Krajca and understand that she went to Dallas hospital to visit her granddaughter who had knee surgery. I didn’t get her name, but we wish her a speedy recovery., Congratulations to Mary Zabojnik.

She will be celebrating her 70th birthday with a two-day trip to Louisiana you know doing what. We wish her a big “happy birthday” and lots of luck pulling that handle. But I hear nowadays, you just push a button. Anyway, good luck, Mary.

President Dorothy thanked all for coming, the wonderful food, the new committee, set up, and clean up. All went really well.

I want to invite everyone to Ennis Sokol Hall March 8 through 11 - four days - to the Mollie B Polka Party.

They are having 30 bands, delicious food, and if dancing, you may get on television. They will be taping for RFD-TV program. I understand the motels in Ennis are filling up. This will be a big, fun weekend, and I will have the Sokol Museum open.

Fort Worth Friendship Club

The meeting of the Friendship Club was held on Wednesday, February 1, 2012, at St. Thomas Parish Hall with 49 members and three guests present—Rita Thomas’ brother George Kosuth from Chicago, Bernadette Holford, Mary Ann Krivanek’s sister, and Rebecca Getty. President Betty Krenek called the meeting to order and welcomed everyone. The Pledge of Allegiance was said, and Vice President Alene Kercho read a poem which was enjoyed.

Secretary Elizabeth Creamer read the minutes from the last meeting, and Treasurer Jo Ann Wilcox gave the financial report. Both were approved as presented. Elizabeth also read a thank you note from Father Anthony for his Christmas monetary gift.

Sunshine Person Paula Hall reported sending a get well card to Mary Ann Krivanek on her recent surgery.

We were saddened to hear of the death of Pat McWilliams’ sister in January.

Our sympathy goes out to Pat and her family. Mary Ann Kozel requested the Club’s memorial on the death of her sister and our longtime member Martha Boenisch be used for church masses. Paula Hall also requested masses be said on the death of her husband.

Ann Marie Moncrief reported on her aunt Agnes Reznicek-Owens who is currently under hospice care at the nursing home. She asked that we remember Aggie in our prayers. Rose Steinman thanked the Club for its support by placing an ad in the program book celebrating the 100th anniversary of Sokol Fort Worth. It was a lovely three-day affair; meet and greet party on Friday night, banquet, and program on Saturday evening, and exhibition on Sunday afternoon. It was nice to see so many of our members at the banquet exhibition.

Door prizes were brought by Lydia Alholm (two), Linda Horner (two), Anna Johnson, and Rosie Steinman.

Thanks, ladies and members who always bring little gifts as they sure make lots of folks happy. Sorry if I didn’t get names of all the donors.

Congratulations! It was nice to have Tom and Nettie Naugle back with us after a few months’ absence.

News Lydia Alholm enjoyed the recent visit from her daughter-in-law Kathy and grandson Danny Alholm from the Chicago area. Naturally, they enjoyed dinner at Oscar’s.

Sharron Connelly’s daughter Laurie and her husband Bob Whitney will be moving to South Africa where Bob will manage a 10,000-acre research farm. Bob works for a company affiliated with Texas A&M. While Sharron is happy for this new experience for her daughter, she is also saddened for her being so far away from home.

Helen Skasek told me she, her son Gary, and his wife Debbie enjoyed the Sokol 100th anniversary celebration.

Helen especially enjoyed seeing and visiting with friends from Ennis and Dallas.

Helen’s other son Ron and his wife LeAnne from Oklahoma were in town, and she rode back with them for a long weekend to watch the Super

Bowl and a trip to the casino. I don’t know who they were rooting for, but Helen said she had a great time, and I don’t know if she was a winner or loser at the casino. She returned home via Amtrak.

Camille Bolcer and Maria Gill were missed. Hopefully, they will be able to attend in March.

The next meeting will be on March 7. We look forward to seeing everyone.

Old-Fashioned Picture Cookies

(Also known as Anise Cookies) From the Kitchen of Colleen Jenke Lodge 258, Seguin

eggs pound powdered sugar teaspoons Anise Extract cups all-purpose flour, sifted teaspoons baking powder

Beat eggs until light; add sugar and anise extract, beating well. Sift 2 cups flour; add baking powder and mix.

Gradually add to eggs, then add additional cup of flour to make a stiff dough (add more flour before rolling out dough, if necessary). Chill for 1 hour.

Flour a pastry board with flour and roll one-third of the dough at a time to 1/4-inch thickness; refrigerate remaining dough until needed. Cut with a 2inch cookie cutter or water glass dipped in flour to prevent dough from sticking to cutter. Place on waxed paper to dry overnight or at least 12 hours. Repeat with rest of dough.

After cutting out a batch, save remaining scraps and mix together for the last batch of dough. These cookies may be a little different but just as good as rest of the cookies.

Bake on parchment-lined cookie sheets in a 350-degree oven for 8 to 10 minutes.

When baked, these cookies will puff up and have air between the top layer and the bottom layer. I have often been asked if I baked two cookies and put them together but that is just the way they bake.

This recipe was handed down to me from my grandmother, Edwina Ackermann, who got it from her aunt in Germany. She had a roller that she used to cut the cookies out and painted them, therefore, the name of “Old Fashioned Picture Cookies.” This roller looked much like a painter’s roller used to paint walls. I have not been able to find one, but I still keep looking.

Sokol Dallas to celebrate 100 years this Sunday

Sokol Dallas will celebrate its 100 year anniversary this Sunday, March 4, 2012. A pork roast and dumpling dinner will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra will perform, and a special anniversary program will be held.

Listen and dance to the music of the Stribrnanka Brass Band from the Czech Republic, presented by the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas, from 2:30 to 3 p.m.

The Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997 introduced a new Individual Retirement Account (IRA) called the Roth IRA. The primary inducement to make contributions to the new Roth IRA is that distributions are tax-free if certain conditions are met. One drawback to the Roth IRA is that contributions to the ac- James L. Lee, III count are never deductible. The passage of the Economic Growth and Tax Relief Reconciliation Act in 2001 provided for increased contributions going forward.

For 2011, an individual may contribute up to $5,000 to a Roth IRA (less any contribution made to a traditional IRA). In addition, EGTRRA established a catch-up provision. Individuals who have attained age 50 or over during the tax year may contribute an additional $1,000.

Contributions to Roth IRAs are not deductible and must be made in cash. In addition, unlike regular IRAs, there is no age restriction on making contributions. Instead, the ability to contribute to a Roth IRA is limited based on Income. First, one must have at least as much earned income as the contribution. Second, if income is too great, contributions to a Roth IRA may be phased out. For single filers, the allowed contribution is phased out for AGI between $107,000 and $122,000. For married individuals, the allowed contribution is reduced proportionately if AGI is between $169,000 and $179,000. No Roth IRA contributions are allowed if an individual is married and files separately.

The earnings attributable to contributions accumulate on a tax-deferred basis and become tax free and penalty free upon withdrawal providing the Roth IRA has been in effect for at least five years and the taxpayer: • has attained the age 59 1⁄2, • dies or becomes disabled, or • is a “qualified first-time home buyer” using the distribution in the purchase of a primary residence.

Distributions from a Roth IRA that has been in effect for at least five years and are taken for any of the above reasons are known as “qualified distribu-

tions.” Qualified distributions are not includible in taxable income. Now for the tricky part, distributions that are taken from Roth IRAs before any of the events specified above are met are deemed “non-qualified distributions.”

Non-qualified distributions will be taxable and potentially exposed to the 10 percent penalty to the extent the distribution includes earnings.

Unlike traditional IRAs, there is no requirement to begin distributions from a Roth IRA at age 70 1⁄2. An individual can continue to defer tax on Roth IRA earnings for their entire lifetime. The traditional IRA required minimum distribution rules do apply to the beneficiary of a Roth IRA following the death of the Roth IRA participant. Thus, a beneficiary can continue to defer tax on Roth IRA earnings but the beneficiary is subject to minimum distribution requirements.

Traditional assets IRA may be rolled over (or converted) into a Roth IRA. Withdrawals from a traditional IRA that are converted into a Roth IRA are not subject to the 10 percent penalty tax.

However, the full amount of the conversion may be subject to taxation.

In deciding whether to make contributions to a traditional IRA or a Roth IRA, a taxpayer should take into account a number of factors. Some of these factors are eligibility to make contributions, the number of years to accumulate earnings, the time projected to begin distributions and current versus future tax brackets. A taxpayer must consider whether the current deduction of contributions to a traditional IRA is more valuable than the future recovery of earnings tax free.

Expression of Sympathy

SPJST Lodge 9, Snook members and officers would like to extend our deepest sympathy to the family and friends of EDWIN HENRY MORAVEC. Funeral service for Edwin Henry Moravec, 84, of Somerville was held at 2 p.m., Sunday, February 5, 2012, at the Evangelical United Church of Christ in Lyons with Reverend John Boydston and Reverend Virgil Pecht officiating.

Interment followed in Oaklawn Cemetery. Edwin Moravec Visitation was from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, February 11 and from 9 to 11 a.m. Sunday, February 12 at Strickland Funeral Home in Somerville.

Mr. Moravec was killed in an automobile accident Thursday, February 2 in Burleson County.

Ed, as he was known to everyone, was born February 13, 1927, in Caldwell, the son of Frank and Milady (Ondrasek) Moravec. He was baptized in Snook Brethren Church and confirmed in the Evangelical United Church of Christ in Lyons.

He was married to the love of his life Floy Bentke on September 10, 1949, at Lyons Evangelical United Church of Christ. They enjoyed 62 years of marriage.

Edwin worked at Santa Fe Treating Plant in Somerville for 45 years. He started off working as a water boy, earning a mere 40 cents an hour in 1944. He worked various jobs, firing boilers, night watchman, panel machine operator, saw mill operator, crane operator, and he retired as a lift truck operator. There was not much out at the treating plant that he did not operate during his 45 years of employment. He retired on February 28, 1989. He was blessed with many years of retirement.

Edwin was a member of SPJST Lodge 9, Snook.

Edwin enjoyed ranching and taking care of his livestock, calf roping and horseback riding, fishing, hunting, and spending time with his wife and family. Ed never met a “stranger.” His motto for life was “I’m going to live

‘till I die.”

Edwin lived his life serving others.

He served on the board of the Lyons Evangelical United Church of Christ for many years. At the same time, he worked with the youth of the church.

He held an office on the Lyons Water Board for 30 years and volunteered along with his wife at Burleson-St. Joseph Manor Nursing Home every Friday doing whatever he could to help the senior citizens there.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Lydia Moravec and Mildred Plant; and brothers Anton and Ernest Moravec.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years Floy Moravec of Somerville; daughter and son-in-law Judy and Walter Brode of Somerville; grandsons Ashley Tood and wife Denise Brode of Burton and Byron Chase and wife Kelly Brode of Cedar Park; greatgrandchildren John Walter and Jacob Matthew Brode of Burton and Abigail Riley and Tyler Reed Brode of Cedar Park; sisters Gladys West of Bryan and Martha Jones of Eddy; brothers Franklin Moravec of Carlsbad, California and George Moravec of Somerville; sister-in-law Gladys Schroeder of Brenham; and a number of nieces and nephews.

The family has requested that memorials be made to Evangelical United Church of Christ, PO Box 440, Lyons, Texas 77863, in memory of Edwin H. Moravec.

We, the members of Lodge 66, Waco wish to express our deepest and sincerest sympathy to the family of our departed sister, NANCY DIANE (PAVLAS) KASBERG, age 54, of West, who passed away late Friday morning, February 10, 2012, at her residence.

Rosary was recited and mass of Christian burial were celebrated at 3 p.m. Sunday, February 12 at St. Martin’s Catholic Church in Tours with Monsignor Isidore Rozycki as celebrant. Burial followed at St. Nancy Kasberg Martin’s Cemetery. The family received visitors from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, February 11 at Aderhold Funeral Home in West.

Nancy was born January 18, 1958, in Waco, the daughter of Victor and Mary Ann (Beseda) Pavlas, Jr. She attended school in Abbott and graduated from Abbott High School in 1976, prior to receiving an associate’s degree in medical transcription from McLennan Community College. On February 16, 1980, she was united in marriage to Michael A. Kasberg in Abbott.

Nancy worked for Dr. Web Lowder at Surgical Associates. She had previously worked for Waco Cardiology.

Nancy was a member of St. Martin’s Catholic Church in Tours, where she had also served on the Parish Council.

Nancy was a member of SPJST Lodge 66, Waco, the Catholic Daughters of America Court No. 829, and KJZT Society No. 104.

Nancy was preceded in death by her grandparents Victor and Lillie Pavlas, Sr., and John and Sophie Beseda; and mother-in-law Patsy Kasberg.

Survivors include beloved husband of 32 years Mike Kasberg of West; parents Victor and Mary Ann Pavlas Jr. of Abbott; sons Stephen Kasberg and wife Tawny and Gregory Kasberg and wife Stacey, all of College Station; sister Cindy Psencik and husband Mark of Abbott; granddaughters Kaylyn and Tatum; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his Bennie Valchar brother, Donald Valchar.

It is with sad hearts that we, the officers and members of SPJST Lodge 154, Fort Worth and Sokol Fort Worth, where Erica visited with many old and new friends at the 100-year anniversary of Sokol Fort Worth and reminisced of wonderful memories where her son Shay was a coach in gymnastics there for many years, hear a few weeks later of her passing. You will live in our hearts always, Erica.

ERICA GREGORY, age 65, passed away Wednesday, February 8, 2012. Funeral was at 1:30 p.m.

Saturday, February 11 in Mount Olivet Chapel. Interment was in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Visitation was 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, February 10 at Mount Erica Gregory Olivet Funeral Home.

Erica was born August 5, 1946, in Fort Worth to Stacie and Eric Koch.

She graduated from North Side High School and continued to meet with her classmates monthly.

She was a member of Sokol, SPJST Lodge 154, Fort Worth, and First Congregational Church of Fort Worth.

Erica retired from Lone Star Gas/TXU after 40 years of service.

A loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, Erica loved this life and lived it to the fullest, but knew there was a better life to come.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors include husband John Gregory; son Shay Hennessey; granddaughter Brianna; sister Sylvia Granado; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

She will be missed, and we know that she is with Jesus, our Lord and Savior.

Section State Youth Director: March Updates

Dear Members, Congratulations to all of the winners in the Sailabration 2011 incentive program! I enjoyed visiting with many of our members at the recent SPJST Awards Banquet. I was happy to see the winning youth clubs receive checks.

Now, let’s focus on Tribute 2012. I hope to see each and every youth leader honored at next year’s awards banquet! I want to see you come up to the front and accept an award for your youth club. Please, remind your youth members to use the referral cards for new members. As soon as you receive the completed cards, please mail them to the Home Office. Remind your club members about the “Top Youth Club in District” Award. It is a swimming, etc. party for the leader and youth members, not to exceed $200. You can do it!

On January 29, District Youth Counselors and I met for our spring meeting at the SPJST Home Office. We discussed and made the plans for the Youth Leaders Workshop. I am happy to report that we confirmed all district camp dates and made changes to the SPJST Youth Handbook. We completed all new business including royalty line-up for 2012 and setting the DYC fall meeting for September 22 and 23 in District Seven. The meeting was adjourned at 12:30 p.m.

Youth Leaders Retreat The retreat takes place Saturday, March 24 at the SPJST Home Office in Temple, Texas. The meeting will start at 10 a.m., and we will be providing a light lunch of soup and salad at 12 noon. This will be a fun and informative meeting. I look forward to spending time with you. I plan to wrap up the meeting by 4 p.m.

Youth leaders who are planning to stay overnight will have time to go to their hotel—Temple Residence Inn Marriott—and get ready for our banquet which will be held at Oscar Store, located east of Temple. I am looking into providing transportation from the hotel to Oscar Store. Those youth leaders who are planning to drive home can make their way to Oscar Store and sit down and relax. We have an area reserved for our banquet out by the dance floor. There will also be entertainment that evening.

All youth leaders and their assistants are encouraged to attend. If you are planning to bring a spouse or guest, please let me know, and I will work with you on making arrangements.

We’re going to cover a lot of ground on Saturday’s program, including Tribute 2012 incentive program, training on camp forms, and YAD preparation. In addition to covering all of the regular topics such as handbook changes and camp, we’ll also be addressing any questions that you may have about the youth program.

A schedule and registration form for the event are in the youth section at www.spjst.org. If you have a rooming preference on who you would like to room with, please identify that person or group on your registration form. If you don’t, I will get to pick for you! Czech Easter Egg (Kraslice) Contest Please encourage your youth to attend your spring district meetings and participate in the Czech Easter Egg (Kraslice) Decorating Contest. All contest participants will receive a participation award, and youth club members will receive two merit points in the merit point system. The first place winning eggs from each district will be displayed in our display case in the SPJST Home Office through the end of the youth year.

The winning eggs from each district will also be judged on the state level. The overall winner in the state competition will receive a $100 Walmart gift card.

skills that I picked up at the American Camp Association Conference in Atlanta, Georgia. This will give LITs an opportunity to acquire some great skills, including learning what their responsibilities are at camp. I won’t give anything away, but I’ll tell you some great activities are being planned. LITs must attend this event in order to be eligible to assist with their district’s summer camping season. LITs will also assist their youth leaders with their youth clubs throughout the year.

Who’s eligible to be a Leader-InTraining? LITs are active high school aged youth who have been approved by their youth leader and district youth counselor as responsible and mature enough to be a LIT. The youth club

member may attend the LIT workshop after completing a Leader-In-Training application. Forms are available from youth leaders and district youth counselors.

100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive There’s still time for youth club members to send in donations for this year’s 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive. Thanks to all of the youth and youth clubs who have contributed to this wonderful project. All youth who donate at least $2 will receive two merit points. All youth who donate at least $5 will also receive a certificate. May 31 is the deadline to receive credit.

Mark Your Calendar: May 5 is Join Hands Day Our goal for 2012 is to have 50 or more lodges participate. What can your youth club do? Some of the great projects from past years included baking for the needy, cemetery clean-ups, highway beautification, assisting veterans and senior citizens programs, conducting a variety of fix-up and refurbishing projects and fundraiser for your local volunteer fire department. You’ve still got plenty of time to decide what you want to do in 2012. The main thing — at this point — is committing to do something.

When coming up with ideas for your project, try to do something that will be noticed by the public. If you have any questions on this, please contact me.

Again, this year, the Home Office will offer a $100 incentive to SPJST lodges to be used in developing and/or promoting their project. This incentive will be for lodges who partner with youth in their community. To receive the $100 incentive, lodges must register the event with the Home Office prior to Join Hands Day and online with Join Hands Day website following the event.

Have a beverage with every meal and snack.

Choose beverages that you enjoy. Several studies show that children and adults consume about 45% to 50% more liquid when it's flavored vs. plain water.

Eat more fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables tend to have a high water content, which makes them a great option for helping you meet your hydration needs.

Dear Readers, February 5, 2012, was our bowling party. We had so much fun. Our second game was my favorite because I won. I started off with a strike then a spare. We had a lot of fun. That was our youth club meeting. My dad helped my brother and sister bowl, too.

My brother made a spare! We were so proud of him. I can’t wait to see y’all at our next meeting on March 4.

Lodge 17 New Tabor Youth Club makes, delivers valentines

Dear Vestnik Readers, We had our monthly meeting on February 5, 2012, and we made valentine cards for the residents of the nursing homes in Caldwell. On Monday before Valentine’s Day, we delivered all our cards. The residents were touched by our thoughtfulness.

On Valentine’s Day, I had a tea party at school. We even got to eat on fine china. We all wore our Sunday’s best, and the girls got corsages, and boys got boutonnieres. It was a great day. I hope everyone had a happy Valentine’s Day. Fraternally Yours, Chandler Sebesta —SPJST—

Lodge 30, Taiton Youth Club reports on February meeting

Dear Vestnik Readers, Lodge 30, Taiton Youth Club held its regular monthly meeting on February 5, 2012, at the Taiton Community Center. The meeting was called to order at 2:15 p.m. by President Allison Fucik. The Pledge of Allegiance was lead by Luc Marcaurele followed by the SPJST motto and prayer.

Secretary Ryan Drapela was not in attendance so roll of members was called by President Allison Fucik, and the reading of the minutes was suspended until next meeting.

A thank you note was read from Jessica Fucik for the get well basket given to her during her recovery after surgery.

Ronnie Vrabel will celebrate his birthday on March 2, 2012. Ronnie is the son of Ronald and Melissa T. Vrabel of Holland. Andrew and Madison Vrabel are his two younger siblings. He is the grandson of the late Wayne Taisler of Holland, Barbara and Charles Hill of Holland, and Tim and Bernice Vrabel of Bartlett, and the greatgrandson of Ruby Taisler of Holland.

I had a wonderful senior year at the Bell County Youth Fair. I have been baking, sewing, painting, and taking photos since the fourth grade and showing rabbits since fifth grade. This year, I had two grand champion awards, fourth top photographer of

200-plus, and several other placings.

ways a mistake. You’ll risk normalizing deceit for an impressionable young person. Worse yet, your kids will have good reason to distrust you after you promise that the flu shot doesn’t hurt a bit.

Encourage a culture of confession: If your child admits to wrongdoing, first be grateful for the honesty.

While you must discipline him or her, the punishment shouldn’t be a deterrent for future confession. Hitting, shaming, and generally making your child feel bad will only inspire him to lie in the future. But instead of sending your children to their rooms to play video games, you can help them reflect on how to do better next time.

“Confession is not merely a clearing out of that which is wrong in us,” says Wilkes. “It is a realignment of what is best in us and an intention to

live a better life.”

Nip it in the bud: Bad habits can start early and are often hard to shake, so it’s never too early to correct dishonest behavior in your child. And you can help kids avoid lying by giving them fewer opportunities to do so.

For example, if you know who made the mess, don’t ask “Did you do this?”

Confront him or her directly about it instead.

Use literature: There are many excellent fiction and non-fiction books that deal with ethical issues and honesty. Your librarian can help you find something age-appropriate to read and discuss with kids.

Though there may be no portion of the school day devoted to it, honesty can be taught. Make sure you don’t let your kids skip this lesson.
