SPJST is a fraternal organization

founded on the time-honored idea of doing good for each other and for the communities that we seek to serve.

Our youth mission is to provide a wellrounded educational, patriotic, and social program. We also like to have fun!

State Youth Director Frank Horak

Through active participation in local SPJST Youth Clubs and statewide events, SPJST youth develop a greater awareness of the common bonds that we all share. SPJST youth clubs also work with community-based organizations to tailor programs to fit local needs. Youth activities include summer camps and community service projects, talent contests, and other local and statewide contests. SPJST also has a great scholarship program that has helped to enable hundreds of SPJST youth to continue their higher education.

SPJST strives to instill a healthy lifestyle for children and families with programs like SPJST summer camp.

Summer camp provides our members with the chance to have fun in the great outdoors and foster friendships that will last a lifetime. Helping children develop a love of the outdoors and being physically active is a big part of SPJST’s camp program.

Young people are influenced by

their friends, family, media, and other information that they receive. Our District Youth Counselors and volunteer youth leaders work hard to build and maintain a fun and stimulating youth program that instills positive values in SPJST youth. By becoming involved in the youth program as an adult volunteer, you can make a positive difference in your community and in the lives of our young people.

Seeing is believing. I hope that you enjoy the 2011 SPJST Youth Spectacular. You and your family can be a part of these programs by becoming an active member of SPJST. SPJST membership is available through the purchase of a life insurance certificate from SPJST. If you are not currently a member of SPJST and would like information about SPJST life insurance and the many benefits that SPJST has to offer, please see pages four and five and contact the District Youth Counselor or youth leader in your area. You may also contact the SPJST Home Office at (800) 727-7578 and ask to speak with someone in the Youth Department.

Membership in SPJST provides many opportunities for active youth club members. Even in communities that do not have an active youth club, there are ways that you can participate in our fun, service-oriented program.

Those qualifications are outlined in the following summary.

Whats’ an Active Youth Member?

In SPJST, an active youth club member is considered a youth with an SPJST insurance certificate that is current and who attends seven out of 12 monthly youth club meetings during the youth year. Youth may attend the adult lodge meetings or another lodge’s youth club meeting if either their youth club is not meeting or they need to make up meetings. Active youth members must be single and not pregnant or

a parent. The age of the youth on June 1 of the current youth year will be the recognized age in the SPJST Youth Program (camp, YAD, contests, etc.).

A youth with a current certificate may enter the SPJST youth program the youth year that they will be entering kindergarten. The youth will be eligible for camp and youth achievement day after the completion of their kindergarten year. The youth year begins June 1 and goes through May 31.

Youth club eligibility ends when the youth graduates from high school.

SPJST Youth Achievement Day and Participation Guidelines Youth Achievement Day (YAD) consists of the following contests and exhibitions.

Beseda Dance Exhibition Special Category Contest (State YAD only)

Each district sponsors a Youth Achievement Day in which local lodge youth club members compete for district honors. First place district winners go on to compete at State Youth Achievement Day to be held Saturday, August 4, 2012, at the Mayborn Convention Center in Temple.

Who Can Enter?

Active and new youth club members, who have completed their kindergarten year to high school senior, who attended seven out of 12 youth club meetings during the youth year and who perform constructive activities in the lodge, are eligible for the YAD contests.

New youth club members participating at YAD must have an SPJST life insurance certificate in force by January 1 in order to participate. Youth in

lodges where there are no youth clubs can enter YAD if they attend seven out of 12 adult meetings or participate in the call-in meetings with the State Youth Director. Youth leaders will verify eligibility of each contestant selected to complete in District YAD. All YAD contestants must be single and not pregnant or a parent.

How Do You Enter?

A YAD contestant must pre-register for all contests by completing a separate YAD entry card for each contest to be entered. YAD entry cards are available from the youth leader, DYC, or State Youth Director.

SPJST Summer Camp and Participation Guidelines SPJST provides summer camping for its youth members. Youth camp funds come from an annual allocation by the SPJST Supreme Lodge. Each of the seven SPJST districts across the state hosts its own camp. Some districts may have combined camp sessions.

Who Can Participate?

Camp is provided on the basis of participation in SPJST activities. Pending that the qualifications are met, summer camp is available to all SPJST certificate-holding youth members.

Campers must also be in good standing with SPJST. The ages for camp are completed kindergarten to high school senior as of June 1 of the camping year.

Graduating high school seniors who are active youth club members may attend camp as a Senior Leader-in-Training (LIT) during the camp session that follows their high school graduation.

Camp Eligibility

Qualifications for youth to attend SPJST camp are based on the previous youth year (June 1 to May 31). To be eligible to attend camp at no charge, youth members must attend seven out of 12 youth meetings or seven out of 12 adult lodge meetings, if the lodge does not have a youth club. Youth members must also attend a majority of the youth activities in the youth club or lodge.

Any youth (previous member or new certificate) who initially joins the youth club by January 1 and attends seven meetings may go to camp free of charge. SPJST youth members who do not meet the above qualifications may attend camp for a prorated fee determined by the DYC. These funds will be submitted to the State Youth Director. Life insurance certificate must be written by May 1 of the current youth year in order for youth to attend camp.

This rule also applies to those campers who will be paying to attend camp.

The youth leader will report all youth who qualify and intend to attend camp to the DYC no later than May 15 on an eligibility qualification form available from the State Youth Director. The DYC must send a copy of his/her district’s qualification forms to the SYD on May 15 for eligibility verification. In cases where there is no youth club, two officers of the lodge may submit the form. All youth who will be going to camp must have their name on the submitted eligibility qualification form by May 15. No one can be added to the eligibility qualification roster after May 15.

Each camper must submit a completed SPJST Camp Application to his/her DYC no later than 20 days before camp. These applications are

available from the local lodge youth leader, DYC, or State Youth Director.

All incomplete camp applications will be returned to the youth. No one may attend SPJST Camp without a completed SPJST Eligibility Application on file for the current year.

If a youth submits an application but is not eligible to attend according to the youth leader’s qualification form, the DYC will contact the leader about the matter.

2011 SPJST Scholarship Program and Qualifications SPJST recognizes and awards its members for academic excellence, exceptional leadership ability, and outstanding service with its scholarship and leadership grant program. This past spring, the SPJST Home Office awarded 57 - $1,000 scholarships to deserving SPJST youth. Another nine scholarships were presented at State Youth Achievement Day in August.

SPJST awards the following scholarships and leadership grants: General Scholarships in the amount of $1,000 Leadership Grants in the amount of $1,000 State Merit Grant in the amount of $1,500 District Merit Grants in the amount of $1,000 Royalty Grants in the amount of $1,500

Any youth member who has been the recipient of either the State Merit Grant, the District Merit Grant, or the Royalty Grant is also eligible to apply for a General Scholarship or a Leadership Grant. A youth may receive a

maximum of two scholarships/grants within SPJST, excluding the State Merit Grant.

General scholarships are funded by the Supreme Lodge and voluntary contributions by SPJST members. Accordingly, the more funds available, the more scholarships awarded. Leadership grants were established in 1996 for active youth club members. Leadership grants are funded solely through allocations by the Supreme Lodge.

To be eligible, applicants must:

• Have an active SPJST life insurance certificate in force for one year.

• Hold an active SPJST life insurance certificate for the duration of the scholarship or grant; and • Be a high school graduate or equivalent.

General scholarship recipients may only receive one general scholarship.

Active youth club members are required to apply for both the general scholarship and the leadership grant; however, they are only eligible to receive one. You may request scholarship application guidelines through the Office of the President during the fall of the year. All required application materials must be returned to the SPJST Scholarship Department by February 1.

SPJST Youth Showcase Talents at State Youth Achievement Day

pproximately 250 SPJST youth from across Texas met at the Frank W. Mayborn Convention Center in Temple, Texas, on Saturday, August 6 to showcase their knowledge and skills at SPJST State Youth Achievement Day (YAD).

The 2011 competition involved participants in grades kindergarten to high school senior. They competed in 15 events, testing their skills in areas such as construction, foods (pies), handicraft, photography, sewing, public speaking, and talent. The event also featured a special category which is a surprise until the day of the competition. This year, participants were each given a drawing of a sailboat and an assortment of art supplies to display “SPJST Sailabration.”

District and State YADs allow SPJST youth club members to demonstrate their knowledge and skills and gain recognition for their achievements. As the youth compete, they develop self-confidence and sharpen their decision-making abilities. They also have a chance to socialize with other youth club members.

SPJST State YAD is the culmination of a year of hard work by some of the best and brightest SPJST youth club members.

Winners of SPJST District YAD competitions across Texas qualified to compete at the state contest. Seven District YADs were held in June and July in Caldwell, Cyclone, Ennis, Hawley, Houston, Taiton, and New

The grand finale of the 2011 State Youth Achievement Day was the presentation of the 2011-2012 State Royalty Court. Crowned to represent SPJST in the coming year were King Robert Lewis and Duke Jaxson Brisco, both of Lodge 9, Snook, and Queen Alyssa Torres and Duchess Emily Filla, both of Lodge 48, Beyersville.

State King Robert, 16, is the son of

Justin and Loree Lewis. Robert is a junior at Snook High School. State Duke Jaxson is eight years old and the son of Russell and Kristine Brisco.

State Queen Alyssa, 16, is the daughter of Irma Torres. Alyssa is a senior at Taylor High School. State Duchess Emily, age eight, is the daughter of Albert and Janet Filla.

Lodge 24, Cyclone teen receives $1,500 State Merit Grant

Samuel Vanicek, age 16, a member of Lodge 24, Cyclone, is the recipient of the 2011 SPJST State Merit Grant.

He is the son of Brian and Joan Vanicek of Zabcikville. Samuel is a senior at Rogers High School. He received the $1,500 grant during the SPJST State Youth Achievement Day awards ceremony in Temple. After high school, Samuel plans to attend the University of Texas at Austin and major in radio/television/film communication

and later work in the film industry.

Teens from each district with the most youth merit points over the last three years competed for the grant. As part of the competition, each teen submitted a 1,000-word essay on the topic “Sailabration 2011.” The winner was selected by a panel of judges using the following criteria: content (50 percent); mechanics—grammar, spelling, and sentence structure (35 percent); and neatness (15 percent).

Congratulations to the 2011 SPJST District Merit Grant Winners. Congratulations to 2011 Top Juniors (tie) Dillon and Macy Narro and Top Teen Colby Havemann, all of Lodge 17, New Tabor in District One. Dillon and Macy earned 172 merit points, and Colby earned 171 merit points to achieve these honors. All were recognized for their achievements during opening ceremonies at State YAD.

State Merit Grant Essay: SPJST Youth—Sailabration 2011 SPJST’s

theme this year is “Sailabration 2011.” The term “Sailabration” is a combination of the words “sail,” a boat’s action of navigating in water, and “celebration,” in which a group of people have some form of party.

When my youth club peers take their turns at describing SPJST’s “Sailabration 2011” theme, they often focus on talking about how much fun SPJST is, on how the members all get together for a great time, and how SPJST is a great celebration of Czech culture. This is a good interpretation of the theme, because SPJST does have so many activities that are fun.

But the theme is “Sailabration 2011,” not “Celebration 2011.”

So, why is “sail” part of this year’s theme? SPJST is a fraternal life insurance company and no sailing is involved in such business dealings.

What parallels can be drawn between a sailing ship and SPJST? Sailing is hard work and takes a lot of preparation. Sailing takes a unified effort from all its crew. A ship requires constant attention and maintenance from its crew. With this in mind, the theme “Sailabration 2011” is a good analogy to the efforts of the members of SPJST. It is an organization that demands input from members. Working together, as if maneuvering a massive ship, these members accomplish great

things. These accomplishments are cause for these dedicated members to celebrate, just as a well-deserving crew should.

What makes SPJST’s ship sail successfully? Sailing requires a lot of work and preparation from the crew, just as SPJST’s events do. Before setting out on any voyage, from a short regatta to a circumnavigation of the globe, a sailor must follow certain basic steps of preparation. The ship’s navigation tools must be accurate, the sails should be in good shape, adequate supplies have to be acquired for the journey, and the ship’s path has to be determined. SPJST requires the same consideration.

Whether members intend to hold a small monthly meeting or a statewide convention, they must plan in advance. A successful SPJST event or project requires preparation. Members and leaders of SPJST set goals, plan schedules, gather materials, hold meetings, carry out the project, and review its outcome. Often, the work is done by a volunteer crew dedicated to the program. Czech traditions often influence their plans and preparations, to make events and projects special.

SPJST’s ship has many voyages and all are approached with great enthusiasm and anticipation by the members aboard.

Sailing often calls for many people.

Celebrating Accomplishments of SPJST

Royalty Speech By 2011-2012 State King Robert Lewis

Good afternoon judges, members, and guests. Thank you for joining us today to celebrate the SPJST. The SPJST organization – founded nearly 115 years ago by Czechoslovakian immigrants represented a hard-working people who came to America for a better life for their families.

However, their goal in creating SPJST was not only for their families but for their fellow man as well. They wanted to provide security and camaraderie – a feeling of friendship – trust and care for one another – for their friends and neighbors. Over the years, the SPJST organization has grown in size and breadth – all the while keeping its original mission in tact.

When reflecting on the accomplishments of SPJST, several things come to mind:

Security – through insurance, annuity and loan programs, SPJST provides its membership the opportunity to provide security for their families – property and life insurance. Annuity programs provide for planning for education for their children and retirement for themselves. Loan programs assist families with home and business loans.

members serve as leaders, volunteers, and mentors. SPJST’s fraternal crew has goals that are different from a conventional ship of sailors. Through the united efforts of members, thousands of hours of community service are performed. Members raise funds to donate to numerous deserving causes such as the November 5th, 2009 Fort Hood Memorial, the Education and Nature Center, the Library, Archives, and Museum, and other worthy recipients throughout their communities.

This is accomplished in the SPJST organization through the many programs offered for members of all ages – everything from youth programs to nursing homes. SPJST recognizes the value in training young people to be better adults – this is done by building character in the youth through educational, patriotic, social, and recreational programs. Members of all ages participate in lodge activities – dances, picnics, fundraisers, games, and many more – which have educational, patriotic, social, and recreational significance for all. These activities build a bond among all members regardless of their age.

The caring for others aspect of SPJST is evidenced by the way the organization cares for its elderly – SPJST nursing homes provide care for the members who can no longer care for themselves.

I can think of no one other organization that provides so much for its members as does SPJST. The accomplishments of SPJST to be celebrated – its original mission of care and brotherly love for fellow man are reflected each day in the successes of the membership of SPJST. Thank you.

Czech culture in Texas is preserved and displayed by SPJST members with beseda dancing, Czech cooking, clothing, and music. SPJST members keep SPJST’s ship afloat with their diligent efforts.

While members greatly enjoy pursuing these goals, they must also take care to attend to the well-being of their own lodges. There is always work that needs to be done aboard the ship! Sails must be adjusted to stay on the intended path of travel, just as SPJST members must stay flexible to changing times in order to meet their goals.

Good afternoon and welcome, judges, guests, members, family, and friends. There is no other feeling like this, being able to stand up here and share the accomplishments of SPJST. When I began thinking about all the accomplishments of this organization that has been around for generations, I began to think on a more personal level. I start thinking about all that SPJST has done for me.

Since the beginning of my membership, seven years ago, I have looked up to everything SPJST stood for, but most importantly, I admired the friendliness of every person I encountered.

Looking at this, the accomplishment that I hold dear to my heart about this Czech organization is that not once has anyone ever made me feel as if I wasn’t Czech.

Now looking at me, you know that I have no Czech in me whatsoever, but when I attend any event our SPJST youth club brings me to, I don’t ever notice.

During a social, I was talking with a member of my lodge about something I can’t quite remember at this moment when he interrupted me midsentence saying, “This is a Czech organization. What are you even doing here?” Hearing this, I just sat there sort of shocked at what I ship that encounters physical wear, lodge buildings must keep up physical appearances. Maintenance of lodge buildings is a task often accomplished by the members volunteering their time. There is a lot of pressure on SPJST members to carry out their responsibilities. Dedicated SPJST members are fast to stop a leak, plug the hole, and bail out water to keep SPJST’s ship sailing! SPJST’s crew has taken care of its vessel for 114 years and, with the efforts of a devoted crew, this tradition will continue for many years into the future.

The amount of effort required to keep SPJST afloat may seem daunting to a new member, but it should always be remembered that not only does

just heard. Not because of the joke, I didn’t think it was all that funny, but at the fact that in my seven years of being a part of SPJST, I never heard anything like that, or felt any different from everyone else. Now, yes, he did apologize, but looking back I looked at that joke as a transformation of what I ever thought about SPJST. A transformation that gave me a whole new level of respect for all involved in the outs t a n d i n g organization: a new respect for all of those who opened their arms wide when I began.

I have made lifelong friendships, I opened my heart to many different people and most importantly, I stepped out of my little bubble I was so accustomed to and brought myself here to stand in this place for the last time. Forever SPJST will be in my heart and as long as I live, I promise to be a representation of SPJST’s greatest accomplishment.

I pledge my support to uphold the high ideals of SPJST: Seeking brotherhood, Pledging benevolence, Joining hands, Supporting humanity, Trusting in my ability to make this world a better place.

SPJST Youth Beseda Dance Groups Participate at State YAD

The Beseda is a Czech folk dance that has been around for many generations. SPJST Youth Clubs perform the dance at events across Texas. Ten groups exhibited the dance at the 2011 State Youth Achievement Day on August 6 in Temple.

The Beseda—A Czech Tradition The history of the beseda began back in ancient history. A number of small tribes settled in the central part of Europe and gradually grew into a group of small states, commonly known as Central European States in early history.

The Central European States were surrounded by savage warlike tribes, and they had to band together for mutual

protection. Their languages became similar over the years and first one state then another became dominant.

Because of the raiding and pillaging by the fierce warriors of the stronger tribes, the Central Europeans settled in small villages and towns for protection.

They went from there straight out to their farms and jobs.

They soon found that they couldn’t fight the stronger warriors and learned to outwit and outmaneuver them. When the people went away to war, the children were left with the old people of the village. To keep the children entertained, the grandparents told them folk tales of their ancestors and the heroes of the region.

Those tales and old love stories and other tales became folk songs and folk dances.

The word beseda, to us, means company or visitors. When they got together, they danced their favorite company dances or beseda. Later the state leaders chose some of the most popular besedas and combined them to make a national dance for the big state and national celebrations. There are many variations of the beseda, and the costumes — kroje — as they came from different sections of the country.

After World War I, the area was renamed Czechoslovakia. Here in America, we dance many folk dances brought from Europe like the Highland

Fling from Scotland and the Irish jibs and reels. (In SPJST,) we also dance the Beseda to try to preserve it and some of the customs and traditions that have been passed down through the years by the people who originated in Central Europe.

Each of the eight parts of the Beseda tells a separate story—a throwback to the origin of the dance. The first part tells of a group of young people who are out having fun and the girls decide to look around to see if they can find new partners who are more to their liking.

The second part is part of the old game and so on, each part telling something about the early days.

District Two Youth Achievement Day Saturday, July 9, 2011 - Lodge 24, Cyclone

A wonderful and exciting day was held for our youth on Saturday, July 9, 2011. Thank you to all the youth members who participated in District Two Youth Achievement Day at Lodge 24, Cyclone. Members, family, and guests, you were a tremendous audience. Your attendance showed our youth your love and support. Thank you to Lodge 24 for your kind hospitality and hard work. We appreciate the many ways you made this day run smoothly and enjoyable for all of us.

This year, once again, we topped the 300 mark for entries with 267 craft entries, four scrapbooks, four posters, 18 individual talent performances, 11 group talents, eight royalty king and queen contestants, eight dukes and duchesses, and four beseda circles. It is great to see so many participating.

There are many countless hours of preparations for these youth in each category. I must say our youth are very dedicated as are their leaders and parents. I thank each of you for your time and dedicated involvement in the SPJST Youth Program. We are very proud and honored to have each of you in District Two. District Two Flag Bearers Kayla Wuensche of Lodge 48, Beyersville and Justin Kraatz of Lodge 47, Seaton presented the flags. Lodge 47, Seaton Assistant Youth Leader Tammy Pechal sang the “Star Spangled Banner.”

Thank you, Tammy, for sharing your beautiful voice. Introductions included Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek and wife Joan, Supreme Lodge Vice President Gene McBride and wife Frances, District Two Director Bobby Wuensche and wife Ruth Ann, Vestnik Editor/Director of Communication Melanie Zavodny and husband David Nauert, and District Two State Field Representative Hiram Dixon. Lodge 24 President Daniel Wilde gave a warm welcome to all attending.

I was more than honored to introduce our 2010-2011 District Two/State SPJST King Sam Vanicek and Queen Jackie Klaus as our emcees for the afternoon. These two young people along with District Two/State Duke Ty Stock and Duchess Chandee Bachmeyer have been a fantastic representation of District Two and the entire state.

Six beautiful young ladies, Rachel Hattemer (24), Kandace Stone (47), Alyssa Torres (48), Nichole Festa (80), Alexis Festa (80), and Vanessa Davila (87), and two handsome young men, Jerry Pechal (47) and Chris Zavodny (47), took the stage to share with the audience and judges what “Celebrating Accomplishments of SPJST” means to them. Cheering these contestants on, along with the audience, were their choosing of dukes and duchesses— Michael Hoelscher (24), Koby Stone (47), Amya Rodriguez (24), Katelyn

Erskine (47), Emily Filla (48), Emma Regan (47), Emma Hoelscher (24), and Shelby Bruggman (24). Prior to their speech, each contestant drew a question to answer which was judged.

Each contestant’s response was so well answered and each one presented themselves and their speeches so well.

The interview of the dukes and duchesses was absolutely precious.

You never know what little ones will share with the world.

The highlight of the afternoon came with the results of the announcement of the 2011-2012 District Two Royalty.

Each of these contestants have made friendships that will last forever. It was very touching to see each one

District Three Youth Achievement Day Sunday, June 26, 2011 - SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis

SPJST District Three cruised along to Ennis, Texas, at Lodge 25 for the annual Youth Achievement Day held Sunday, June 26, 2011.

By the time the sun settled that day, many crafts, talents, and royalty winners were announced. Our theme this year is “Sailabration,” and believe me, we celebrated over our talented children. Our youth booked their voyage to an opportunity to participate in the festivities at the big event of State Youth Achievement Day in Temple on August 6 at the Frank W. Mayborn

Convention Center.

We can assure our youth that only the very finest crafts, talent, and royalty will represent District Three at State YAD, and their experiences that they will share with other districts will only be a beautiful voyage.

District Seven Youth Achievement Day Sunday, July 10, 2011 - New Braunfels, Texas

District Seven Youth Achievement Day was hosted by Lodge 185, New Braunfels and held at the Comal County Fairgrounds on Sunday, July 24, 2011. We had a nice turnout with around 200 craft and talent entries.

We started the busy day with registration. Thanks to all of the adults for their help with registration and setting up the crafts. Thanks to State Youth Director Frank Horak, Vestnik Editor Melanie Zavodny and husband David Nauert for checking the crafts to make sure everyone followed the rules.

Thank you to Val Barta for taking care of the participation awards and to Donnie Howard for being our master of ceremonies—you did a great job.

We ended our day with royalty competition. We had one king and two queens vying for the titles of District Seven Royalty. Our king is Clay Howard and his duke is Zach Howard, both of Lodge 185, New Braunfels, and our queen is Michelle House and her duchess is Kelly House, both of Lodge 202, Jourdanton. District Two Sails Through Fun-Filled 2010 - 2011 Youth Year

District Two youth members have had a wonderful and exciting time since the last Youth Spectacular was published in 2010. It has been a year of many fun-filled activities, new friendships, and lasting memories. We thank SPJST for giving us these opportunities.

I thank leaders for their countless hours in preparing and planning. Parents, we thank you for your support and getting the youth to the meetings, practices, and activities. We hope everyone has had as much fun as we have had this past year.

September 2010: How exciting for our 2010-2011 District Two Royalty Court—State King Sam Vanicek, State Queen Jackie Klaus, State Duke Ty Stock, and State Duchess Chandee Bachmeyer—to represent SPJST at Westfest in West, Texas. It was a wonderful experience that will never be forgotten. The annual District Two Fall Meeting held in Elgin was very well attended by our youth. Games of all sorts and fun prizes were enjoyed by all.

There was great participation in the Christmas ornament contest. District Two sponsored Core Challenge at Lions Park in Temple which was open to the public. The turnout was rather low; however, we did reach out to youth in the surrounding area. The event brought a new family into SPJST. October 2010: SPJST once again sponsored Czech Feszt in downtown Temple. There were several youth members who participated in the Mr./Miss Czech Feszt contest which State King Sam and State Queen Jackie helped judge. Youth enjoyed the many different festivities, including the kolache eating contest which several youth participated in. District Two Czech Beseda Dancers performed.

2010: November-December Many youth clubs presented Christmas programs at their home lodges. Beseda dancers were invited to Lodge 80, Holland’s annual Christmas party to perform the Ceska beseda. It was a great evening of good food, prizes, and, of course, the great visit from Santa. The following evening the beseda dancers rode on the beautiful SPJST Float in the Temple Christmas parade. Our State King Sam Vanicek and State Queen Jackie Klaus rode a Corvette furnished

by Melanie Zavodny and David Nauert.

State Duke Ty Stock and State Duchess Chandee Bachmeyer kept right up with their king and queen peers and rode a Corvette also furnished by Melanie and David. The weather was rather cool, but of course, our faithful royalty loved being in full view atop the Corvettes. I was honored to chauffeur King Sam and Queen Jackie. When asking our Royalty Court of their most exciting part of their reign, “riding in the Corvette,” is always the answer.

Melanie and David, your generosity of sharing the Corvettes gives our royalty an added spotlight in their reigns. Riding on the floats in the parade is such an honor for our youth. They love the fun themes, the beauty, and almost always winning first place. What a way to represent SPJST. The time put into each float is remarkable. Thank you again, Melanie and David! Following the Temple Christmas parade, members joined many others at SPJST Home Office for fun and food. There was face painting, decorating of gingerbread boy and girl cookies, choices of balloons in all shapes and sizes, and a carriage stroll through downtown Temple.

January 2011: A rather slow month for the youth. What a way to start off a new year, giving the parents a break to get over the holidays or so it seemed.

There was a lot of interest with many district youth wanting to be a part of our exciting beseda circles. Before we knew it, there were a total of 32-plus youth interested. And the practices began! What a way to begin 2011! January ended with the state awards banquet. Lodge 47, Seaton received a monetary award for achieving its goal of new members along with an award to District Two Youth. Many of our other youth clubs received awards which gave extra cash for a party or activity within their lodges.

February: The month we get back into the swing of things. I thank my assistants Janet and Carol, youth leaders, parents, and youth for all stepping up and helping in so many ways during the time I was spending with my husband Albert during his critical illness. Things rolled right along as I knew they would.

Everyone enjoyed seeing new and old friends at the annual District Two Skating Party in Temple. This 35-year activity seems to get bigger and better each year. Everyone enjoys skating and then waiting for their number to be drawn for a lucky door prize. Keeping with our District Two saying, “Every youth in District Two is a winner,” we make it happen here, too. Each youth receives $1 as they leave. This year, our new State Youth Director Frank Horak put together a fantastic idea for a State Youth Development Workshop which was held at Cooper Farm. I understand it was very well attended by many from District Two and other districts. What an outstanding learning experience!

joyed Horseshoe Junction in Brenham.

There were arcades, go-carts, miniature golf, a cliffhanger rock wall, and laser tag. After a day of learning and playing, everyone enjoyed a pizza party.

March: The annual District Two Spring Meeting was held in Taylor.

Youth participated in the Czech Easter egg (kraslice) decorating contest. The newly organized beseda circles of 32 dancers performed for the audience.

What a treat for everyone! After the meeting, the youth were ushered outdoors for a big surprise. The newly painted Cooper Farm bus was ready for viewing. Parent and Tex Blast President Chaundra Mitchan donated the materials and time of her crew to get the bus looking good. Summer camp trips to the lake will now be in style. Thank you, Tex Blast of Temple!

April: To show appreciation to our youth leaders and 2010 camp chaperones, a party was held in their honor.

We had a great time of good fellowship, lots of food and our traditional exchange of gifts. Of course, not everyone left with the gift of their choice. As adults, we handled it very well and had a great time! District Two is so blessed to have had such wonderful leaders and chaperones. They deserve so much credit for the hours they volunteer.

Thanks to each of you.

Many of you, or should I say most of you, participated in the benefit to help defray the medical cost and every day living during and after Albert’s illness.

Your “joining hands” meant so much.

SPJST is a true fraternal organization throughout the entire state of Texas.

You all came together for us, and your kind gesture will always be remembered.

May: Most youth clubs in District Two participated in Join Hands Day by helping others. Some gave to food pantries, cleaned cemeteries, had bake sales for those in need, worked at a community barbecue fundraiser, or helped the local animal shelters. Thank you for showing your true fraternalism.

“Take Me Out to the Ball Game!”

We made it happen on a beautiful May afternoon for 100 District Two members, parents, and friends. We received a great group rate so I decided to make a goal for attendance to be 100. It worked! Exactly 100 District Two members enjoyed the seats between third base and home plate at the Round Rock Express game. Once again, another great District Two outing!

June: Our popular District Two Beseda Dancers performed at Lodge 47, Seaton’s annual picnic. With the temperature close to 100 degrees, all 32 dancers showed pride for their Czech heritage. I am so proud of all of you!

The LIT Workshop held at Cooper Farm was awesome. We had 17 attending from our district. I am so proud of these teenagers’ involvement and enthusiasm throughout the entire weekend.

Approximately 125 youth, friends, and parents enjoyed an evening of swimming at Temple’s Walker Pool. It was that time of the year when we get together not only for a fun social, but also to turn in YAD cards. Wow! I knew after that night we would be busy, busy getting ready for District Two Youth Achievement Day—only 20 days later.

July: A very, very exciting month!

August: State YAD—a very exciting day for the many District Two youth who earned the honor to participate with our six other districts across the state. It seemed like only a short time ago that my dream had become reality—a State King, Queen, Duke, and Duchess from District Two. And now, Sam, Jackie, Ty, and Chandee were giving their farewell speeches as their royalty reign came to an end. How very proud we are of you not only representing District Two, but the entire state.

Thank you for representing the SPJST organization with dignity. Sam and Jackie, please stay involved within SPJST. We need young people such as yourselves in our adult lodges and to be involved with our youth. You are their role models. Ty and Chandee, I look forward to the day I will be just as ex-

cited when you are announced as SPJST State King and Queen.

The 2011 State YAD finale of course was the crowning of the 2011-2012 State Royalty. I commend each of you from across the state who were on the stage. You all were outstanding. Congratulations to District Two King Jerry Pechal for being named First Runnerup State King and Michael Hoelscher as First Runner-up State Duke. We are so proud of both of you. Next came the moment of announcing the State Queen. District Two Queen Alyssa Torres was crowned SPJST State Queen for 2011-2012, and Miss Emily Filla was crowned SPJST State Duchess! A State Queen two years in a row for District Two! Way to go! Congratulations to all participants in all categories of State YAD including talent and crafts. We are so proud of you for your accomplishments.

The last big District Two youth activity — that so many looked forward to before the summer ended to the busy school year — was the SPJST Corpus Christi End of Summer Getaway.

Members had a choice this year to choose between a night’s stay in Corpus or a day at Six Flags Over Texas in Arlington, courtesy of District Two Youth Program. Thirty-six youth club families traveled to Corpus and spent the weekend. What an awesome time we all had. Each youth club participated in the sand sculpture contest, and there were some neat ones in all shapes and sizes. The limbo, hula hoop contest, minute- to-win-it games, kolache eating contest, sack races, and a spelling bee were some of the contests held on Saturday. There were also tournaments, including dominoes, horseshoes, and my favorite - Bunco. It got rather loud and quite feisty which made it even more fun! It was so neat to see many youth joining in on the fun with the adults.

There was even a craft table set up to make yourself a favorite piece of jewelry. SPJST, you put on a wonderful weekend for all ages. Thank you, thank you!

As you can see, we in District Two never slow down for long. The above is what we do as a district with even more activities held within the local lodges.

We are proud of our youth and want them to stay involved. Again, thank you to each member of District Two for your love and dedication to our youth program.

District Three: Proud of Weeks’ Triplets

District Three is very proud of the triplets of Tom and Kay Weeks! They have been very eager to continue representing us in a very active way. With there being three of them, it is hard to ask two to go and do activities without all three attending. This is why they are so important to us, and we are very proud of this family. Thank you, Kay and Tom Weeks, for raising your family in SPJST! Kay serves as youth leader for Lodge 183, Arlington as well as Assistant District Three Youth Counselor. If Kay is unable to get the job done, Tom is right there behind her working just as hard and is willing to help to get the job done. This is why their three children have worked so hard as District Three King/Queen representatives. It is hard to say at our District YAD . . . “and now we will have two queens and one king . . . and the winner is,” when we know no matter which daughter will be queen, the district will be represented in a royal fashion. This is where we praise Tom and Kay for raising such a wonderful SPJST family!

Gena and Tommy Weeks were District Three Queen and King in 2009, and Katie and Tommy Weeks were back-to-back Queen and King in 2010 and 2011.

What makes us even prouder is when attending State Royalty Competition the past three years, they all have placed as runner-ups. They may not have won the State King or Queen titles, but in our hearts, they are our King and Queens, and we appreciate all their hard work.

This is Gena, Katie, and Tommy Weeks’ senior year, and we wish them success in their future years of college.

We know we will not lose them as active members because they are always there coming up with their great ideas and helping promote our organization as much as they can.

Tommy has served as youth club president, vice president, treasurer, reporter, and sergeant-at-arms. Tommy is a senior at James Martin High School where he is baritone section leader in band and is in the National Honor Society and Spanish National Honor Society. He enjoys band and playing video games. He plans to attend college and pursue a successful career.

Katie has served as president and as a member of the scrapbook and poster committees. Katie is a senior at James Martin High School where she participates in band and soccer. Her honors include Principal Award and Trumpet Leadership Award.

Katie’s future plan is to attend college and become an optometrist.

Gena has served as vice president, secretary, and sergeant-at-arms and on the scrapbook committee. She is also a senior at James Martin High School where she participates in band and soccer. Her honors include Principal Award and ‘AB’ honor roll. Gena’s future plan is to attend college and become a teacher.

Thanks, Weeks’ family, for your hard work and dedication. You have given not only in your youth club, but to the district in your special way!

District Three Youth Bring Home the Medals at State YAD

As our District Three youth “sailed” to the annual State Youth Achievement Day in Temple on August 6, 2011, to compete in crafts, special category, talent, and royalty competitions, they showcased their talents with great results!

This day involves our youth competing with other SPJST youth from districts all across the state. The craft categories include constructed items, foods, handicraft, hobby kits, needlework, photography, pictorial arts, science/education, and sewing. The special category event at State YAD is an open event to all pre-registered club members, and special instructions are not given until that day. This year, the youth were given a drawing of a sailboat, drawn by State Youth Director Frank Horak, with a small bag of items (such as stickers, crayons, pom poms, and crafty items) to display our theme of “SPJST Sailabration.” This demonstrated all sorts of talents from all across the state and proudly gains recognition for their achievements.

SPJST State YAD brings out the brightest part of our youth in the talent competition. All first place winners of each district’s Youth Achievement Day showcase their best performing acts.

This brings out many talents that sometimes the youth do not really realize they have until they perform.

The grand finale of the day is the royalty competition. This is the highlight of the year in which a teenager learns what public speaking is all about. This competition includes an interview and a presentation of a prepared speech, not to exceed three minutes. The speech must be in their

own words and presented in a positive manner. The speech topic must incorporate SPJST and must make up 50 percent of the speech. This is one of many values of life our youth learns and carries from our program.

Whomever wins the prestigious State King and Queen titles and after successfully completing their reigns and upon their high school graduations receives the SPJST Royalty Scholarship.

Throughout the year, youth attend various district and state activities with monthly meetings that they earn merit points for participating. This entitles the youth at the end of the year to receive cash prizes from the Home Office. Once this information is all gathered, the Home Office recognizes the Top Junior and Top Teen Merit Point Winners. This is always a good way of the organization to say thank you to the youth for his/her dedication to the club.

SPJST recognizes and awards its members for academic excellence, exceptional leadership ability, and outstanding service with its scholarship and leadership grant program. Any youth member who has been the recipient of either the State or District Merit Scholarship or the Royalty Scholarship is also eligible to apply for a General Scholarship or a Leadership Grant.

Districts Three and Four Host State Workshop and Membership Rally Lock-in

District Three Youth Counselor Bessie Petr and District Four Youth Counselor Janice Stevens held a State Workshop presented by the Home Office on Saturday, April 2, 2011, in Arlington.

New State Youth Director Frank Horak was our main speaker along with Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek and guest speaker Melissa Victorick. Lodge 183, Arlington in District Three was the central location between the two districts to host such an event. Lodge 183 members were so gracious to open their lodge hall to have a first-time ever event with District Four. Many youth members were excited just to get together with another district as well as to meet new members and to have fun!

The Home Office had various

games and ideas for us to share with each other.

SYD Horak had his first one-on-one with both districts’ youth. He had some games to play along with several small group variety acts to play out. The results were just amazing to see what all they can do within a few minutes of practice.

President Vanicek and Fraternal Services Specialist Tammy Martinez went over several things with the youth. Officers’ positions were a main concern for them to go over the responsibilities of each position. Brian went through all of the parliamentary procedure of a meeting. This was a very educational lesson. I really do believe the children did go back to their clubs trying out what all they learned.

Guest speaker Melissa Victorick

(1987 SPJST State Queen) divided our youth into two groups—younger and older. With the older group, she talked about public speaking and how scary it is to speak on a microphone to a large or small group of people. When the younger group joined in with Melissa, she had several exercises and fun games to play as ice breakers in a large group. She really had all of us going and having fun. That is until we learned that Melissa Victorick really did hurt herself while playing games with us.

We really did hate to end the session!

After all of our business was done with the workshop, we then let the party really begin. We had everyone bring a friend. We all got to meet the new friends and had a lock-in with many games and prizes. We played minute-to-win-it, had an Easter cookie

contest, did crafts, watched movies, danced, and just sat around and talked.

I think a lot of us fell asleep wherever we were just sitting around and talking to each other and having a great time.

The next thing you knew, you could smell bacon and sausage that Bessie and Janice were cooking in the kitchen for our breakfast. It woke everyone up saying, “I’m hungry!”

It was sad to start packing up our stuff, but we knew not only did we make new friends, we had a great time together!

Janice and I both agreed that we will have to do this again!

Districts Two and Four Camp

July 28 to 31, 2011 • SPJST ENC at Cooper Farm in Ledbetter, Texas

The last week of July 2011 finally

rolled around—a week District Two youth and chaperones had been waiting for all year—a “Sailabration” at Cooper Farm!

The cruise set sail on Thursday, July 22 from the Cooper Farm Port in Ledbetter, Texas. Destinations of choice

by Captain Patsy, Janet, and Carol were Aruba, Jamaica, Cancun, Bahamas, Hawaii, Alaska, Italy, Turkey.

Cozumel, and Belize. Sailing were 74 campers, 17 Leaders-in-Training (LITs), 21 chaperones, Nurse Becky, and three District Two Staff. What a great number in attendance!

What a camp—everything you could ever imagine. We began the afternoon with scheduled group activities. Later that evening we had a fun ol’ hayride. Everyone really enjoyed it. The swimming pool and horseshoes were a familiar activity for many with those pitching horseshoes so much better than last year.

One of the activities everyone was ready for on Friday was the ropes course. The staff did excellent with games prior to the low ropes course.

Campers really got into it. The low ropes was so challenging for each group activity. Many learned that teamwork is essential to complete challenges. It was great to see each group working together to complete the tasks.

The high ropes was a dare to challenge for many. I was so proud to see so many trying the challenges and the many who completed them. It was great! The zipline is such an awesome “drop from the sky.” All campers and even some adults enjoyed the zipline very much.

To keep in tune with our Czech heritage, Michael Morris had an awesome activity—“The Czech Melody Hour”—for all groups throughout the day. Campers learned words and phrases, how to pronounce names in Czech, and of course, Czech songs.

Those who have never been on a cruise ship got firsthand of what to see on the ship. I understand a very popular and beautiful part of the ship are the ice sculptures. At Cooper Farm, ice would never have stayed frozen long enough to make a sculpture during our craft time so we compromised. Each group made a “Sailabration” sculpture from foil paper. What awesome ideas:

ships, lighthouses, an island, dolphins, and a “glass” for your soda. My favorite was the beautiful bouquet of foil roses which were presented to me.

Another added attraction on the ship are towels and washcloths folded into different shapes. Our next craft project was for each group to fold these keeping with the theme. Once again, what neat and brilliant ideas. Your talents were awesome. It really got many of us in the “cruising” mood.

The pond was a a little low this year due to a word “rain.” Not real sure what that is, but that is what I was told.

There were a few who still took advantage of canoeing and paddle boating. Many used their skills at the rife range and shooting bows and arrows.

There were some first-time campers who made a bull’s eye with the bow and arrow and hit the center target with the rifle. For those who had not experienced either, they left as pros.

The journey to the lake in the big bus was great. Tubing at the lake was voted the number one activity of camp.

And, which boat and driver to ride with? The votes were tabulated, and the winner is . . . I am not quite ready to reveal the results. It will be announced at the next district activity.

John and Lisa, sorry, you will have to sweat it for a few more weeks.

We enjoyed a night of dancing to the music of choice by the one and only Youth Leader/Chaperone Christine Festa. Everyone loved the grand march led by Senior LIT Neil Rabroker and Dounia Mohad. Every camper participated. I have been trying for years to get some of these boys up to grab a partner. One way or another, they had one this year. It was 100 percent participation. I am so proud of each of you. There were many new friendships made that evening. It was great to see the bond that was made between the entire group. Thank you for your participation. Later that evening, for a job well done, the LITs were treated to an LIT hayride. Very interesting and a lot of screams!

Once again, campers were delighted to join in on Janet’s most famous scavenger hunt. There were groups racing in all directions to find the clues which she and Carol had so well hidden.

From the pavilion to the pond, then to the ropes course and all over the campgrounds, you could see the eagerness of all to make it back to the dining hall with all clues in tact. Time seemed to run out. Next year, we will not wait until the morning before we leave to have it. Janet works too hard for it not to be completed.

Campers, LITs, and chaperones received a 2011 Camp Completion Certificate. Thanks, LITs, for your suggestions at the workshop. Jackie, remind me of the cookies baking they had suggested. Next year, with a reminder call. It was fun coming up with names to suit each one. Ask your camper about their certificate name. A few were: MaKenzie Tallas—“Best Bed Maker;” Bayley Mitchan—“Banana Split;” Ramsey Washam—“Most Organized;” Ryan Mathis—“Mr. Sing A Lot;” Ryan Festa—“Most Likely to Own A Country Club;” Luke Ray— “Lost Marbles Award;” and William Cetta—“Prettiest Eyes Award.” District Two Chaperone Nancy Posvar— “Where’s He At? Award;” and LIT Collin Vanecek—“Papa Smurf.” Only wish Melanie had space in the Vestnik for all the awards. There were some really neat ones with all the help of LITs Thank you to Becky Zavodny (Seaton) for keeping everyone safe and healthy. We appreciate your tender care. We appreciate your multiplepage report. Luckily all was minor, except for Saturday night when LIT Jerry hit the water “falling ” off the tube. He landed on his ear. Tammy picked him up, and they spent most of the night in the emergency room. His eardrum had burst. We thank God that he is fine now and able to hear once again. We all said a little prayer for you, Jerry, and as we all know, prayer works .

Of course, camp would not be possible without the great chaperones to keep the campers in line. And, maybe sometimes even me. I appreciate your

time and care of these campers. I do believe the chaperones have as much fun as the campers. I know I sure do.

Campers did great without cell phones, iPods, or any electronic devises. Everyone just enjoyed the outdoors and hanging around.

District Four, we loved having you hang out with us. Thank you, District Four Campers, DYC Janice Stevens, Beverly Teplicek, Nancy Schwertner, and Diana Rozmen. It is great to have that bond with all of you.

ENC staff members CeCe, J.W., Gavin, Kelly, Stephen, and Michael were a fantastic staff. We adopted them and were proud to have them join in on our fun. Verlyn, Linda, Eulonda, and Cory made sure our meals were warm and on time. Thanks to all of you for making our camp fantastic. Of course, thanks to John and Lisa who are one of us. We appreciate all you do at Cooper Farm. Things went so smoothly.

To the ENC and John, we thank you for all you have done to make such a beautiful and safe camping facility for our youth. We thank everyone who has supported the ENC. I truly know that the 2011 camping experience these campers had this year will be a lifetime memory.

We can hardly wait for SPJST Camp 2012 at Cooper Farm!

District Three Camp

July 7 to 10, 2011 • SPJST ENC at Cooper Farm in Ledbetter, Texas

District Three set sail to SPJST Edu-

cation and Nature Center (ENC) at Cooper Farm on Thursday July 7 to 11, 2011, for our summer camping experiences.

Our cruise ship liners (really our cabin names) were Disney, Explorer, Carnival, Voyager, Princess, Royal, Star, Pirates, and Captain. District Three Captain Bessie Petr met and greeted all youth and chaperones at the pavilion and directed everyone to their cruise liner. After getting settled in, everyone went to the dining hall where Peggy Dobecka and Pat Dieterich had a craft idea for water bottles that everyone would be responsible for carrying around on this three-day trip.

For our first event, everyone had a chance to play minute-to-win-it games which got everyone all fired up and ready for a fun camp adventure. The LITs had a flag ceremony and prayer that ended our day and led us to our supper meal.

Our first evening activity was divided into two groups where we played horseshoes and swimming. After a long swim, the younger youth headed to their cruise liners as the older youth had other plans to start their camping fun. Mary Steinman gave out a list of scavenger items to be found on the campground for a contest to see which group would win the lifesaver award at the captain awards banquet. The older youth met at the pavilion to have storytelling night.

Some stories were very scary, and some were personal scary events that happened several years ago. We also learned some of the ENC scary stories since we really do not know much about Cooper Farms’ history. Then, the teens headed to the dining hall for Melissa Hubenak had brought her music equipment, and they all enjoyed listening to music and visiting with each other. But I think some planning of other things went on that were really not on the list of events!

Our Captain instructed us that we all needed to head back to our cruise liners for we all needed to get some rest for a busy full day of activities. Of course, she knew there would be some extra visitors walking around trying to scare each other. Little did she know that cruise liners got barricaded as a joke from the crazy Cooper Farm Gorilla!

Our early first morning flag ceremony by the teen boys went very well,

considering that they stayed up most of the night trying to catch the gorilla!

Our next full day schedule consisted of horseshoes, crafts, swimming, archery, riflery, going to the lake, high ropes, and learning the beseda. The weather was hot, and we all needed to cool down with those famous District Three Jerry’s Snow Cones. This is always a special treat to us all! Jerry Zabojnik makes sure we have enough cool down time with his snow cones.

And, with our generous local lodges donating snacks, it always makes the heat not to be as bad.

When our day ended and after supper, we had a Captain’s party. This was a fun event enjoyed by all. Melissa Hubenak helped put on a great show with her karaoke music. Everyone enjoyed dancing, singing, taking pictures of new and old friends, and just having a good time together.

Captain Bessie had a beautiful display of food that we all enjoyed during the night. She is always making sure we have plenty to eat and that she did a marvelous job. We all really did think we were on a cruise! When it was time for the younger youth to head off to bed, the older youth stayed in the dining hall and played a few more interesting and fun games until they started showing signs that they needed to go bed as well.

That is until the Gorilla came out again!

On the second day, the 10- and 11year-old boys held a great morning flag ceremony assisted by their chaperones Tom Droste, Scooter Holland, and Danny Dvorak. And, the 10- and 11year-old girls conducted the evening flag ceremony assisted by their chaperones Lori Pace, Leslie Milan, Sandra Slovak, and Joy McClellan.

After the supper meal, we had some entertaining skits presented by each cruise liner. I really do think some had already been in the thinking process before they arrived at Cooper Farm for the skits were so good and entertaining. I think everyone enjoyed performing and watching the other groups perform as well.

Once everyone got to show off their talents, we all jumped on the Cooper Farm hayride. ENC Director John Hoelscher took all of us on this adventurous ride around the whole farm. But, of course, we were attacked by some flying water balloons and the screams

of a gorilla and other monsters. When returning to the dining hall, it was all fun seeing who all got wet and who all got touched by all the crazy monsters out in the woods. This is just another reason why you do not want to be walking around Cooper Farms at night alone!

In the dining hall, Carrie Ann Jones had some really challenging games that we rotated around so everyone could participate in all events. This was a great challenge to all ages and was enjoyed by all—even the adults.

As the younger ones headed off to bed, the older youth had more team building games and just wanted to hang out with each other and recollect the day’s adventures.

Our last day was really a short day.

It was Sunday, and Jerry Zabojnik with the help of Melinda and Joy McClellan gave us a very nice vesper service. The service gave us time to mediate in our hearts and to give thanks for all of the blessings we had at camp.

Captain Bessie had a couple of things yet she wanted to do before dismissing us. She wanted to review our Czech songs and teach them to our newest camp members. We really did not have enough time to learn some new songs, but she promised that next year she would return with new songs to learn.

And, finally we had the Captain’s awards. It was the teen girls who won the scavenger hunt.

The curse ball cursed the teen girls!

They had to wash the curse off by holding on to the life jacket and swimming to the other side of the ship. As they traveled around the room (ship), Tom Weeks had a bucket of water ready to wash the curse off and as the girls started screaming, they realized that there really wasn’t any water in the bucket at all. But, they were all saved, and the curse went away.

Co-captains Lynda Novak and Kay Weeks awarded all passengers on the District Three Sailabration Ship with a lifesaver candy to prove they all have been saved and ready to dock this cruise at the Cooper Farms dock. Everyone was given their special instructions on cleaning their cruise ships and packing their bags to go home. The Captain gave her final stop and proudly sent off her passengers to another wonderful camping memory with her District Three youth.

But, many thanks goes to all the people who helped make this camp a success. I want to say thank you to the chaperones. Without you, camp could never happen. You take time off from your busy schedule and donate it to our children. Thank you for caring for the youth in District Three and making sure they had fun.

his summer seems to have flown by faster than I could have ever imagined!

It started off with my six-year-old son breaking his arm the second week of summer.

We had District Five Youth Achievement Day on Sunday, June 26 at SPJST Lodge 88, Houston with a bunch of crafts. And, for the first time in many years, we had several talent acts—both individual and group. District Five was well represented at State Youth Achievement Day, and we are all very proud of each of our youth’s achievements! Congratulations to all participants; you are all winners!

This year, we had the pleasure of camping with Districts Six and Seven— something that our three districts had never done all together. The last time we camped with either District Six or District Seven was about 20 years ago when I was a Leader-in-Training and we went to Camp Val Verde. Boy, times sure have changed.

This year, all of our youth and chaperones had a really good time. We arrived at SPJST Education and Nature Center (ENC) at Cooper Farm on Thursday, July 14 and didn’t stop all weekend!

We celebrated three birthdays while we were at camp and had cake two different days as a special treat! All of the youth enjoyed crafts, archery, bb guns, swimming, hay ride, high ropes, and let’s not forget the lake, as well as many other activities. My son even went swimming in the pool and the lake with his cast!

Thank you, ENC Camp Director John Hoelscher and staff for such a great time. We also need to thank our District Youth Counselors who prepared the ac-

tivities—Barbara Linney of District Five, Lisa Bubela of District Six, and Wendy Pruski of District Seven—and their assistants.

At the last minute, we were scrambling for a camp nurse and thankfully, we were able to call upon Paul Allen —District Five chaperone to fill in until Nurse Andrea could arrive Friday afternoon.

(Thankfully, I was able to get her from my doctor’s office. Thank you, Andrea!)

When Nurse Andrea arrived, I had to take a young camper to have ear drops put in her ears for swimmer’s ear, and she didn’t want Nurse Andrea; she wanted “the doctor man.” It was too cute!

If you asked any one of our campers or LITs what the best thing at camp was the response each time was, “Making new friends!” I was so excited to hear this since this response shows what the SPJST is all about—fraternalism! You sure can see it in our youth. Since we had such a good time this year, I don’t know if we can top it next year. But, I am willing to try and see what all of our great leaders have in store for us!

District Five ended its summer with a social that included a water slide, hot dogs, chips, and cookies. Jered’s birthday was the next day and his mom brought cupcakes. We all sang “Happy Birthday” to him.

Thankfully for us, our summer ended with Keith getting cleared by his orthopedic surgeon for all activities. Now, let the school year begin! Until next year . . .

District Seven Camp

istrict Seven went to summer camp Thursday, July 14 to Sunday, July 17 at the new SPJST Education and Nature Center (ENC) at Cooper Farm. We were joined this year by Districts Five and Six. We had a great time at ENC this year. Many fun activities were planned for the youth.

Our theme was Sailabration. For our first year camping with Districts Five and Six, I believe the youth had a great time and made many new friends as we kept them busy most of the day and into the night!

I would like to thank all of the Lifeboats for helping me with camp this year. The Lifeboats consisted of District Five Youth Counselor Barbara Linney-Gonzales, District Six Youth Counselor Lisa Bubela, myself, Assistant DYC Regina House, Theresa Haag (aka “Snack Lady”), and Mary Ann Kieschnick (our craft leader).

We had 57 campers, (the Kayaks, the Canoes, the Paddleboats, the Sailboats, the Rowboats, and the Freighters), 26 Leaders-in-Training— LITs (the Yachts, the Speedboats, and the Motorboats ), and 25 chaperones and staff.

Staff and LITs began arriving at camp at 12 noon to get camp set up and cars unpacked before the campers started arriving at 11 a.m. When the campers arrived, they were given a water bottle and name tag. They decorated their water bottles and then headed to their cabins—their island retreats (Jamaica, Hawaii, Bahamas, Haiti, Cozumel, Barbados, Aruba, Figi, and Canary Islands )—to get them set up for the weekend. We enjoyed supper and then got ready for evening activities.

Thank you, ENC Camp Director John Hoelscher, for taking the youth on a hayride so we could set up for evening activities. We had a new campfire ceremony this year and hope to continue our friendship ceremony each year. The evening concluded with a nice group swim.

Some of the activities that were enjoyed this year included swimming, archery, rifles, crafts, high ropes course, outdoor games and indoor games, lake activities, (riding on the banana was a lot of fun for all), and the nature hunt.

I would like to thank all of the chaperones for giving of their time to come and help with camp. Thank you to my Assistant District Seven Youth Counselor Regina House for helping me get all the groups, cabins, and the schedule organized for our camp, and going shopping for the snacks and supplies with me. Thanks to DYC Lisa Bubela for getting the name tags done. Thanks to DYC Barbara Linney-Gonzales and Mary Ann Kieschnick of Lodge 142, Houston for getting the crafts and going to town for anything extra we needed.

Most of all, I would like to thank our youth for being very respectful of our new camp and the adults who are here to watch after you. If it weren’t for great kids like you, it would be difficult to have a great camp and have it run smoothly. When you follow the rules and don’t argue, we can get it done.

Also, a great big thanks to State Youth Director Frank Horak for coming and spending a couple of days with us, and thanks to Camp Director John and wife Lisa for putting together a great staff. The kids loved them, and they were easy to work with. Then again you had two great ones from District Seven!

We look forward to a bigger and better camp in 2012 with even more activities planned.
