Join Hands America

Join Hands America kicked off Thursday, May 5 to Saturday, May 7

at Shilo Inn in Killeen to raise funds and awareness for the Fort Hood November 5th, 2009 Memorial.

Thanks to Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek, State Field Representative Hiram Dixon, and the Fraternal Department staff for their efforts and dedication in coordinating and hosting the three-day event.

David and I enjoyed visited Friday evening, May 6, and it was a lot of fun! We enjoyed meeting new people; games, music, and food; and learning more about the project. Motherʼs Day Tradition Mother’s Day at SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone Flag Hall has been a family tradition since the lunch began 19 years ago. The members work really hard to prepare the meal and all the details that go into the day every year. It’s a wonderful lunch This is my beautiful aunt Henrietta Slavik at Lodge 24, Cyclone’s Mother’s Day Barbecue on May 8. She will celebrate her 99th birthday on June 12. Aunt Henrietta is a member of Lodge 24, Cyclone, and she is a faithful Vestnik reader.

Armed Forces Day In the United States, Armed Forces Day is celebrated on the third Saturday in May. It falls near the end of Armed Forces Week, which begins on the second Saturday of May and ends on the third Sunday of May. The day was created in 1949 to honor Americans serving in the five United States military branches – the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, and Coast Guard – following the consolidation of the military services in the Department of Defense.

District Seven reports on spring meeting, membership rally

District News

Lodge 79, Corpus Christi hosted the District Seven Spring Meeting and Membership Rally on Sunday, April 10, 2011, with 69 members and guests attending. District President Colleen Jenke presided. The district youth posted the colors and led the Pledge of Allegiance. Special guests were Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek, District Seven Director Bob Bayer, State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Chester Jenke, and State Field Representative Hiram Dixon.

Lodge 79 President Mark Rebecek welcomed everyone. He introduced Lodge 79 officers.

Director Bayer conducted a memorial service. A candle was lit by District Second Vice President Jerry Sijansky and District Youth Counselor Wendy Pruski as each name was read.

Theresa Haag, James House, and Frank Sacky were appointed to the nominating committee. Ron Janota, Sandra Hoggard, and Roy Haag were appointed to the auditing committee.

All district officers except the Assistant District Youth Counselor were present. Lodges represented were 79, Corpus Christi; 107, Floresville; 117, Robstown; 185, New Braunfels; 202, Jourdanton; and 258, Seguin.

Secretary Bettie House read four sets of minutes. The September 12, 2010, fall meeting minutes were amended. (The November 5, 2010, date was the unveiling of the architect’s drawing of the Fort Hood Memorial instead of the groundbreaking.)

All were then approved.

Director Bayer read correspondence from the Ronald McDonald House thanking the district for the pull tabs. Almost 100 gallons of tabs were delivered to Temple by Director Bayer last year.

Treasurer Valerie Barta read notes of appreciation from the SPJST Education and Nature Center (ENC) for donations of $130 from the spring meeting silent auction and $450 from the Corpus Christi End of Summer Getaway. Killeen Volunteers, Inc. expressed appreciation for $200 for the Fort Hood November 5th, 2009 Memorial. Treasurer Barta also presented the financial report. The IRS form was mailed.

District FAC Glen Pruski read the names of the 50-year, 75-year, and age 96 members.

Director Bayer and FAC Pruski recognized the 2010 Fraternalist of the Year nominees: Lodge 93 - Gladys Lobner (deceased); Lodge 202 - James House; and Lodge 258 - Henrietta Lowak. James House was also congratulated for being named SPJST State Fraternalist of the Year.

Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek selected five youth to participate in the “History of Fraternalism” presentation depicting activities of the Greeks, Romans, Trade Guilds, St. Louis Czechs, and Texas Czechs.

Checks were presented to the district. Premium income is up compared to last year. August 12 to 14 is the Fifth Annual Corpus Christi End of Summer Getaway. About 330 attended last year.

SL President Vanicek commended State Field Representative Hiram Dixon for conceiving the idea of a memorial for the Fort Hood tragedy.

More than $75,000 has been raised.

The approximate cost will be about $250,000. The goal is to raise $500,000 for projected upkeep expenses.

Director Bayer noted lodges that received awards at the state awards banquet were: number one in the state Lodge 79, Corpus Christi - Sapphire Award; Lodge 107, Floresville - Gold Award; Lodge 133, San Antonio Gold Award; Lodge 202, Jourdanton Silver Award; and Lodge 258, Seguin - First Step Award. Sales agents were recognized. A Czech flag was displayed. Lodge 107 will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2012.

District Youth Counselor Wendy Pruski presented the youth financial

District Seven King Lane Hoggard, Queen Michelle House, Duke Jordan Woodall, and Duchess Kelly House were introduced. District Seven youth clubs donated a barbecue pit to the ENC. Monies raised from an Easter basket drawing were donated to the Food Bank of Corpus Christi.

A United States flag that was flown on March 31, 2011, was presented to SPJST ENC at Cooper Farm on behalf of SPC Lian Pruski, a member of the 4th Infantry Division Headquarters.

State Field Representative Hiram Dixon noted a slow start in sales, but it’s a race to the finish. Mailouts will be coming soon.

State FAC Jenke stated that April 27 is the Legislative Awareness Day at the State Capitol in Austin. May 5 to 7 is the kick-off for Join Hands America at Shilo Inn in Killeen to promote the Fort Hood Memorial.

Standing committee reports were given by Roy Haag (finance), Colleen Jenke (publication), Wendy Pruski (insurance), and Bettie House (by-law).

The auditing committee found no discrepancies.

The SPJST State Bowling Tournament will be held September 17 in New Braunfels to benefit the ENC, Czech Heritage Museum, and the Fort Hood Memorial. There will also be a silent auction and prize drawings.

Silent auction winners were announced.

Door prizes furnished by the SPJST Home Office were awarded.

The districtwide Join Hands Day project to benefit the Food Bank of Corpus Christi was successful. Sokol, KJT, and KJZT joined District Seven to collect $1,427.25 and 328 pounds of food.

Delta Sociology Honor Society.

Elizabeth is a member of SPJST Lodge 4, Hallettsville. She is the daughter of Philip and Annie Vahalik and the niece of Patsy and Helen Zabransky, all of Lodge 4, Hallettsville.

Elizabeth received two $1,000 scholarships from SPJST. She also was the 1997 SPJST State Duchess.

Elizabeth has applied to Graduate School at Texas State University to pursue a master’s degree in technical communications. She is currently employed with Apple, Inc. —SPJST—

Lodge 15 Buckholts reports on May meeting

The May meeting of SPJST Lodge 15, Buckholts was called to order by President Douglas Williams at 5 p.m.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Lillie Zajicek followed by a moment of silence in memory of our departed members. We had 11 members present and two visitors. Guests were Honorary District Two Director Frank Klinkovsky and LaVerne Vanicek. It is always so good to have them with us.

All officers were present except Vice President Scott Brandon. Jim Wallace sat in for him.

President Douglas greeted everyone and thanked all for attending.

The secretary’s and treasurer’s reports were read and approved.

In old business, President Williams stated that the Form 990T had been completed, and a copy had been forwarded to the Home Office. In midApril, a talent show was held in the building. It was a fundraiser for college scholarships and was a big success. It raised $2,000. On April 30, the junior and senior banquet was held here. On May 1, a local dance group held a dance here. We have offered the group a very discounted rate for years.

The lodge building is an enhancement, not only for Buckholts, but for the whole area. Many different activities are held here.

Jim and Jere Wallace reported on the recent SPJST car show that they had entered. We thank them so much for their entry representing Lodge 15.

In new business, President Williams asked Frank Klinkovsky to bring us up-to-date on events.

Later, President Williams asked A.W. Zajicek to bring us up-to-date on the restoration project. He advised that we must first come up with a name.

We decided to call it The Buckholts SPJST Preservation Foundation. We also needed a list of directors. The following were chosen — A.W. Zajicek, Douglas Keith Williams, Frank Klinkovsky, Arthur Peevey, Frank Tomascik, and Jim Wallace.

Virginia Williams made the motion that we adjourn, seconded by Sandie Fischer. Motion carried.

Door prizes were drawn, and a delicious meal followed.

Lodge 20, Granger member graduates with honors

Cara Lynn Spanel-Weber, daughter of Carey D. Weber and Deborah A. Spanel, graduated summa cum laude from Texas A&M University on December 17, 2010, earning a bachelor of science degree in molecular and cell biology with minors in genetics and English. She graduated with Foundation Hon- Cara Spanel-Weber ors from the Texas A&M University Honors Program and maintained a 4.0 grade point average throughout her undergraduate study. Due to her outstanding academic performance, she was chosen to carry the flag of the College of Science at the graduation processional.

Cara is pursuing a career in research and will continue her education in cell biology at the doctorate level at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas in September.

She is the granddaughter of Al and Elizabeth Spanel of Houston, and Patricia A. Kleck nee Leverett and husband Pete of Canyon Lake, and Calvin E. Weber and wife Elaine of Fredericksburg.

Cara is a member of SPJST Lodge 20, Granger.

Lodge 24, Cyclone says thank you

Wilbert and I as chairmen for the Mother’s Day Barbecue Dinner want to thank every one of you who came and helped us. It takes all of us to get the job done—the crew who came on Thursday evening to help cut cabbage and onions to the last one on hand when we finished cleaning up on Sunday. Wilbert wants to give a special big thanks to the guys who came at 3 a.m. on Sunday morning and were there until the last chicken came off the pits. He could not do it without each of you.

I especially want to thank all the ladies who served everything from beans to tea—you are the best. To the community that stepped up to the call when we asked for extra cakes from

To Barbara, Robert, and Carl Macek who always give it their all. To Joan Vanicek and the youth who took care of the desserts, and to David and Melanie—we can always count on you.

Lodge 29, Taylor hosts Join Hands Day bake sale

Lodge 29, Taylor met on Wednesday, May 11, 2011, with President Ronnie Rieger presiding. After leading the Pledge of Allegiance, officer roll call showed Cristy and Mike Girod absent. The April minutes were read and approved.

Vice President Sharon Kaderka reminded us to remember our fallen soldiers and our troops overseas on Memorial Day. There will be an SPJST Flag Day observance on June 14 in Temple. A new and updated SPJST cookbook will be published in time for the Christmas holidays.

Tammy Whatley gave the treasurer’s report. She also reported on youth activities. The youth club rode on the SPJST Float in the Granger Lakefest Parade where the float received the Most Beautiful Award.

Jesse Pospisil reported a new water meter has been installed, and new lines are being installed to get more water pressure in the hall.

Senior citizens had six tables of domino players this month.

Ronnie Rieger named the members of the audit committee and by-law committee. He also gave us a report on the ENC activities.

Albin Machu signed up new member Joe W. Pustejovsky. Leonard Kaderka made a motion to accept him, and Edmond Tate seconded. The motion prevailed.

Members celebrating birthdays in May are Alice Schwenke and Kathryn Adamek. Ronnie and Lyn Rieger celebrated their wedding anniversary.

Door prizes were furnished by Alice Schwenke, Lauren Karkoska, and Evelyn Simcik. Next month, Lyn Rieger and Connie Voigt will furnish them.

Tractor Pull Star Hall will again be hosting the T.A.T.P.A. sanctioned tractor pull on Saturday, June 4 and on the day of the picnic with the events beginning at 11 a.m. each day. Let’s hope the weather will cooperate. Come on out and see

The youth club will have the outdoor kitchen open on Saturday for lunch.

President Robert Leshikar opened the Lodge 48, Beyersville meeting at 6:30 p.m. with the Pledge of Allegiance. The officers gave their reports, and all were approved as read.

Hall rentals are steady for the months of May and June. Bunco is held the second Tuesday of each month.

The FAC report given by Larry Beran reminded everyone of the August Corpus Christi End of Summer Getaway. He also reported that the new SPJST cookbook is being compiled, and anyone wishing to submit a recipe should do so by September 1.

Ruth Ann Wuensche read a thank you note from the officers of the Taylor Relay for Life for our donation and participating in their fundraiser.

Linda Wuensche stated in the youth report that a garage sale is planned for June 11 to help fund the youth summer trip to Corpus Christi. You may call Linda (512) 269-6789 if you have any items to donate for this fundraiser.

The September fundraiser is in the organizing stage with suggestions made for prizes and solicitation of auction items. These ideas and suggestions will be finalized at the June meeting.

Lodge 80, Holland participates in Join Hands Day project

President Rita Spinn called the meeting of SPJST Lodge 80, Holland to order on May 7, 2011, at 4 p.m.

Membership stood for the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence for departed members. President Rita expressed sympathy to J.D. “Pete” and Estelle Coker on the loss of Pete’s son.

Board member Christine Festa was absent. She was working at the new playground in Holland. Also absent was sales agent Janet Lyon and new sales agent Chad Simpson.

Secretary Linda Hill read the minutes of the April meeting. They were approved as read.

Treasurer Jewel Wolf gave the financial report. It was accepted.

Linda read thank you notes from Janet Fraizer, the family of Pauline Kopecky, Albert and Patsy Koslovsky, Charlie Block, and Holland ISD Su-

perintendent Cindy Gunn for the scholarship donations.

Lodge 80 had one new member, Chad Simpson. A motion was made and seconded to accept him; and the membership voted him in.

The fire extinguishers had been checked and were okay. The air conditioning had also been checked also.

Joe Liles asked for the use of the pit on Monday.

FAC Frank Pajestka, Jr. reported that Lodge 80 had participated in Join Hands Day - feeding workers at the new Holland park. On June 14, two soil conservation groups want to meet at Lodge 80 for a group meeting. A motion was made and seconded for them to use the hall. Motion carried.

Clark Preston and Joyce White of Bartlett were at the board meeting to ask if Lodge 80 could provide hamburgers for Bartlett citizens who are unable to leave their homes. Bartlett citizens will deliver. In a motion by Curtis Wolf, seconded by Risa Pajestka, the lodge membership agreed to make 100 hamburgers (and serve

each with a package of chips) on June 10 for Bartlett citizens.

A scholarship memorial will be given in memory of James E. Coker, son of J.D. “Pete” Coker. The football association has asked for a donation.

In a motion by Frank Pajestka, seconded by Barbara Taisler-Hill, the membership agreed to give a donation.

SPJST Home Office has given two scholarships — one to Cyril Pajestka and one to Jacob Crotty. Lodge 80 agreed to give a scholarship to Jacob Crotty in a motion by Vicki Slye and seconded by Dan Hendrix.

Door prizes were won by Sylveria Tschoerner, Tony Sladecek, Risa Pajestka, Curtis Wolf, and Jewel Wolf.

The meeting adjourned at 4:40 p.m. for happy hour.

Lodge 88, Houston plans June 5 homecoming

Please make plans to come to homecoming, set for Sunday, June 5, 2011, at Lodge 88, Houston, located at 1435 Beall Street in Houston, Texas 77008. Members and guests of all ages will enjoy a fun-filled day.

Lunch will be served from 11:30 a.m. until 2 p.m., and it will consist of barbecue chicken and sausage, potato salad, pinto beans, and coleslaw.

Lodge 155, Austin sets June 5 social, meeting

Lodge 155, Austin will have its summer picnic and meeting on Sunday, June 5, 2011, at 1 p.m. at Zilker Park Polo Grounds on Barton Springs Road.

Members and guests are asked to bring one side dish, their own drinks, and to RSVP by June 1. Fried chicken and ice will be provided. There is no need to bring lawn chairs as there are cement picnic tables and benches.

The directions are: Go north on Lamar Boulevard. This turns in to South Lamar Boulevard. At the traffic light intersection of South Lamar and Barton Springs Road, turn right onto Barton Springs Road. Pass another traffic light and cross over a short bridge. Immediately get into the left lane. Turn left into the main entrance of Zilker Park. There is a small guard house on the right. Immediately turn onto the right road which is a winding road. A green sign has “Polo Grounds” printed on it. Turn into the parking lot. You are there!

If you choose to get to the park from Mopac going south, take the Rolling Wood exit, pass the traffic light, veer to the right where it turns into Barton Springs Road. Stay in the right lane, and the entrance to the park is on the right. Follow the directions from there to the Polo Grounds. It has a lot of trees so it will be shady.

Lodge 183 Arlington reports on May meeting

The monthly meeting was held and called to order at 7:05 p.m. on Monday, May 9, 2011, at Lodge 183, Arlington, located at 3100 Pleasant Valley Drive in Arlington.

Roll of officers was called, and all were present except First Vice President Ella Mikeska, Fraternal Activities Coordinator Debra Daniel, and Trustees Raymond Mikeska and Rita Mardis. Present were President Ann Pustejovsky, Second Vice President Dorothy Adamek, Financial Secretary Angeline Stiborek, Treasurer Annette Cepak, Secretary/Reporter Darlene Hollingsworth, Youth Leader Kay Weeks, and Trustee Randy Adamek.

Our thoughts and prayers go to Randy Adamek’s aunt Martha Huff, who had knee surgery; Rudy Rejcek; Katelyn Daniel; Janie and Rudy Rejcek’s daughter Sandra; and Robert and Pat Sill’s daughter Kelly. The Pledge of Allegiance and a prayer of silence was observed for all those who are ill or who have recently been in the hospital.

Minutes from last month’s meeting were read by Secretary/Reporter Darlene Hollingsworth. There was one correction. Birthdays last month were for April, not March. All approved the minutes from April with no other corrections.

President Ann Pustejovsky gave the bar report. Ann stated that for April, we had 12 bingos and one rental. Ann gave the bingo report. Ann stated that bingo is doing very well, and there

Ann wished all moms a happy belated Mother’s Day. A webathon was held May 5 to 7 in Killeen for Fort Hood November 5th, 2009 Memorial. Join Hands Day was May 7. The State Horseshoe Tournament is May 14 at Lions Park in Temple. Remember the fallen soldiers on Memorial Day May 30. Remember Flag Day on June 14. The Corpus Christi End of Summer Getaway is August 12 to 14.

SPJST will have cookbooks available with new and renewed recipes for Christmas. Send in your recipes by September 1. The State Bowling Tournament is September 17 in New Braunfels.

Youth Leader Kay Weeks gave the youth club report. She stated that the youth club will elect new officers at the May meeting. In addition, they will be getting together to work on the youth club scrapbook and poster for Youth Achievement Day. Sunday, May 1 was the District Three Spring Meeting at Lodge 84, Dallas. Four youth members and four adults attended. Katelyn Daniel won first place in the Czech Easter Egg Decorating (Kraslice) Contest in her category. Also, Katelyn Daniel and Gena Weeks were voted in as vice president and secretary, respectively, for the district youth club. Congratulations to you both! Join Hands Day was Saturday, May 7 at 9 a.m. at the hall. Youth and adult members did some cleaning up inside and yard maintenance and clean up outside. After the cleanup, everyone met at Cheddar’s for lunch.

Please note: YAD cards are due back to Kay by Sunday, May 29. Remember, you can enter up to five different craft categories. The food category this year is pies; the constructed items category is wood; and the photography category is sunrise/sunsets.

LIT forms are due back to Kay by Saturday, May 14. You will need to get a copy of your shot records from your doctor or school nurse. The Health and Human Services Department will no longer allow us to just note that shot records are on file at the school district. It took SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton member Johnnie Plsek 90 1/2 years to kill this nice 8-point buck with a rifle!

Johnnie said that he spotted the buck on the farm in Marak, Texas, in Milam County, where he was born.

He also killed a second buck in Bell County with a bow last season.

Before retiring, Johnnie was a local building contractor for many years.

He and his wife Adela have lived in Temple since they were married 64 years ago.

Johnnie has been a member of SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton for 60 years.

Birthday Club Sisters of Lodge 88, Houston

The meeting was called to order at 11 a.m. by President Evelyn Zajicek on May 11, 2011. The meeting was opened with a prayer said by Helen Hegwood. This was followed by all of us reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

The roll of membership was called, and we had 13 members, honorary member Julie Kinnamon, and two guests present at the meeting. The minutes were read and approved as read.

President Zajicek asked for cakes for the month of June, and Delores Pavlicek and Willie Mae Pechacek volunteered to make the cakes. We will have meatloaf for lunch in June.

Protecting Texas seniors from counterfeit check scams

by Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott

Fraud against seniors is more widespread than most Texans realize. Wellinformed seniors and their family members can help prevent the greatest

generation from falling victim to fraudulent schemes – including a familiar counterfeit check scam that has re-emerged in recent weeks.

Law enforcement officials recently notified the Attorney General’s Office that the so-called “Reader’s Digest Sweepstakes” scam has reappeared around the state. Some Texans – usually senior citizens – may have received letters claiming the recipient won $1 million in a sweepstakes. The letter claims its “Prize Award Department” drew the recipient’s “ticket

number” from a pool of thousands.

To appear legitimate, the letter fraudulently uses the Reader’s Digest business logo and the Better Business Bureau’s accredited business seal – which falsely implies BBB accreditation.

Enclosed with the letter is a counterfeit check for several thousand dollars. Letter recipients are told to call a toll-free (800) number for further instructions. As is common in these types of scams, recipients who call the number are instructed to wire an up

Members of SPJST Lodge 141, Sealy; KJT; and Woodmen of the World joined hands with the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts to honor the veterans buried in the Sealy Cemetery, Immaculate Conception Church Cemetery, St. Mary’s Cemetery near Frydek, San Felipe Cemetery, and the Polish Cemetery.

Approximately 500 flags were placed on the graves of the veterans at the

five local cemeteries by the youth and adults working together on Saturday morning, May 7, which was the actual designated Join Hands Day. This day is sponsored by America’s fraternal benefit societies as an opportunity for youths and adults to work side-by-side on all different kinds of projects.

front payment to cover taxes or other administrative fees before the remainder of their “winnings” can be issued.

The scammers know that the up front payment amount sounds trifling compared to the $1 million in prize money the victim thinks he or she has won. The victim often thinks it is worth paying the up front fee because the prize money far exceeds the alleged taxes and administrative costs.

But the prize money will never appear. Victims will simply lose whatever money they wire to the scammers, which can have a devastating effect. In many cases, victims borrow or deplete their savings to come up with the money they are supposed to send in advance. It is a cruel blow when they realize they have lost that money to a con artist.

Counterfeit check schemes like the “Reader’s Digest Sweepstakes” scam typically manifest themselves as an unsolicited offer for a prize or a job that seems too good to be true. In this case, Texas seniors should remember that the BBB has nothing to do with the Reader’s Digest sweepstakes – and the publication itself does not require winners to wire money anywhere.

All Texans should be skeptical about unsolicited financial offers – or risk losing their life savings to a thief.

How to protect sensitive data after an Internet security breach

Over the last two months, internet security breaches at public and private institutions have compromised Texans’ names, addresses, and Social Security numbers. Unfortunately, online security lapses can lead to identity theft.

As law enforcement officers know, personally identifying information – including names, Social Security numbers, and driver’s license numbers – in the hands of identity thieves can damage Texans’ credit. An identity thief may use this sensitive information to obtain credit cards and checking accounts in their victims’ names.

Texans who believe an Internet security breach may have affected them should access the Attorney General’s Identity Theft Victim’s Kit online at www.texasattorneygeneral.gov. The kit is designed to help victims navigate

the process of protecting their credit.

It includes relevant forms and agency contact information that is necessary to help restore credit and prevent further financial harm.

Texans should carefully monitor their bank statements, credit card bills and any other statements relating to recent financial transactions. They should request a copy of their credit reports and examine them carefully for signs of fraud, such as unauthorized credit accounts. Potential victims should also check to see if there have been multiple inquiries on their credit report. If a thief is attempting to open

up several accounts, an inquiry will be listed on a credit report for each of those attempts. Finally, Texans should check that their Social Security number, address(es), phone number(s) and employment information are correct.

If Texans notice unusual activity on their credit statements, they should contact the fraud department of one of the three credit reporting agencies – Experian, Equifax or TransUnion – and request a fraud alert. When a person requests a fraud alert from one bureau, that company will notify the other two bureaus. The person’s credit file will be flagged with a statement

that says he or she may be a victim of fraud and that creditors should phone the person before extending credit.

Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), a person can place an initial fraud alert for 90 days at a time and may cancel the fraud alert at any time.

When a person establishes a fraud alert, he or she will receive a followup letter from each credit bureau. Each letter explains how the person can order a free copy of his or her credit report from that credit bureau. Texans who fear their personal information has been compromised by recent Internet security breaches should take

SPJST Lodge 155, Austin participated in Join Hands Day. Our lodge chose St. Mark United Methodist Church at Braker Lane in Austin to do a food drive for its pantry. We collected money from our lodge treasury plus the following members donated money for grocery shopping: Joe and Jean Motl, Albert and Clara Klinkovsky, Maryanna Wood, Doris Boriski, Ginny Prasatik, Richard Johnson, Peggy Rains, Nel Marek, and John and Laverne Hejl. Jean Motl talked to Juanita Kelly, head of the food pantry, and received a grocery list of needed items. The groceries were delivered by the Motls on April 19 to complete the project for the lodge.

We would like to share an article that appeared in the St. Mark United Methodist Church newspaper: Love Box I want everyone to know what a wonderful surprise we received in early April. Jon Griesheimer’s neigh-

bor Mrs. Jean Motl called to ask about our food pantry that serves the area.

Her husband is president of SPJST Lodge 155, Austin. The lodge, as a service project, wanted to bring food to the pantry. With the money they had to spend, she wanted to buy the specific items that are needed to fill each one of the sacks given to recipients.

A big thank you to the Motls for thinking of St. Mark, and it’s nice to know SPJST Lodge 155 participates in such needed causes.

advantage of this offer and order their credit reports soon. Identity theft victims will see evidence of it on their credit reports.

ID theft victims may also consider a security freeze. Texas law authorizes individuals to place a security freeze on their credit reports if they have filed an identity theft complaint with law enforcement. A security freeze is stronger than a fraud alert because it prevents anyone from accessing a credit file until and unless the person authorizes the credit bureaus to release his or her report. (Please note that it does not affect existing accounts and includes other exceptions.) Texans should be aware that a security freeze might be inconvenient – particularly for anyone who is applying for new credit, an apartment, or employment involving a background check. For those credit checks in process, the affected individual will have to lift the freeze on their credit file. A freeze can be lifted for a certain period of time or for a specific creditor.

If credit reports indicate that a person is an ID theft victim, he or she should immediately file a police report. It is very important to complete this step because the report can be used as proof that the person is an ID

theft victim.

Victims should report fraudulent accounts and erroneous information in writing to the credit bureaus and the credit issuers following the instructions provided with the credit reports.

More than likely, the credit bureaus will ask for a copy of the police report.

In all communications with the credit bureaus, ID theft victims should refer to the unique identification number assigned to their credit report.

They should send all communications via certified mail with return receipt requested – and be sure to save all credit reports as part of their fraud documentation.

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has the authority to prosecute identity theft at the federal level. Texans can report ID theft to federal authorities and receive additional assistance with identity theft-related issues through the Federal Trade Commission by calling (877) IDTHEFT (1-877-438-4338), or visit the agency’s website at www.ftc.gov.

Lodge 255, Katy partners to bring love, hope to community

Lodge 255, Katy members are pictured with Joe Joe Bear and Christian Business Fellowship Association (CBFA) friends working together to bring love and hope to their community.

Lodge 255, Katy joined with the Christian Business Fellowship Association and Joe Joe Bear Foundation on May 10, 2011, for a blood and bear drive. Sixty units of blood were donated. In addition, 160 bears were donated for children with cancer.

The 160 bears, along with 180 previously collected, will be given to MD Anderson Cancer Center to provide

comfort for 340 children. Funds were also donated, and every $5 donated will purchase one bear for children with cancer and other life threatening illnesses.

Financial Planning for Women

Women are no longer just a powerful force in today’s economy. It is estimated over 60 percent of the nation’s wealth is controlled by women. Some may have inherited wealth and may or may not be employed.

Some are corporate executives, entrepreneurs, or middle management. They may be single, married, or divorced. They James L. Lee, III may or may not have children. A woman’s financial situation is often unique, and an individual approach to financial planning is essential. However, areas of common concern do exist.

Many women work outside the home. If so, they may have income tax problems, especially if they face higher taxes because they are single and unable to file a joint return. To address these problems, women should consider the following areas: the role of tax-advantaged investments to reduce their tax burden; the taxation and treatment of executive perks from their employer; the effect of age-related tax and Social Security provisions; and the tax problems of a small business including choice of organization, the selection of a retirement plan and the taxes upon disposition of their business interest.

Closely related to income tax planning for women is investment planning.

Investment selection and asset allocation involve much more than tax considerations.

There are various questions women should consider. Do investment objectives line up with financial resources and needs? Is the investment advice they are receiving objective, reliable, and in line with their goals, time horizon and risk tolerance?

Will a trust help with their investment planning? Women who are too busy or unable to oversee the day-to-day management of their investments should consider a trust. A trust may provide the comfort that comes with knowing that financial affairs will be properly handled in all eventualities.

Estate planning, like tax and investment planning, depends on individual

circumstances. Whether a woman has built her own estate through work investments, or a business, or whether a woman has inherited a husband’s estate is irrelevant. What matters is that she is aware of the estate planning options that are available. Unmarried or widowed, a single woman might use lifetime gifts to reduce her estate tax burden by using the gift tax annual exclusion and lifetime unified credit.

Trusts may also be useful in a program of lifetime gifts, particularly where minor children or grandchildren are involved.

Estate plan coordination, charitable contributions, and life insurance can also be extremely important toward achieving estate planning goals.

For those women working for a large employer or inheriting their spouse’s retirement plan, they will frequently be faced with decisions affecting retirement benefits.

Those decisions may have a significant impact on their financial situation the remainder of their life. Critical questions may arise such as: which of the several distribution options provided by an employer’s qualified retirement plan is best; will their retirement nest egg be adequate to maintain their present lifestyle; and what benefits will they be entitled to from Social Security, Medicare, and employer-sponsored plans?

No two women are alike nor are the financial predicaments in which women are likely to find themselves.

As anyone can see, there are a variety of issues, problems and solutions to consider. Adopting a systematic and individualized approach with the aid of financial planning professionals can help to address and solve these problems while achieving a woman’s investment, retirement and estate planning goals.

In Memoriam

In Memory of Milady Vlasta Surovec Arnold

The year was 1912. William Howard Taft was President of the United States. The income tax began in 1912; but on the Albert George Ranch in Fort Bend County, Texas, something else happened — Milady Vlasta Surovec was born to Joe and Agnes Surovec. Milady would be the sixth of nine children Milady Arnold born to the Surovec family. At her death, she had outlived, in years, all of her brothers and sisters. Milady was 98 years, five months, and 19 days old at the time of her death.

The Surovec family moved to Brazoria County circa 1935 where they would raise cotton, corn, and maize, and stay until the deaths of the parents.

Milady at about age 23 moved to Rosenberg where she worked as a waitress for three to five years. In

1942, she and her small son moved in with her sister and brother-in-law Alfred and Bessie Susan and their three daughters. She helped Alfred and Bessie on their farm, raising cotton, corn, and maize. Milady prided herself as being one of the first, if not the first woman to ever run a cotton-picking machine. This machine would make life easier, but there was always plenty of hard work to be done.

In 1960, Milady moved to Houston to become a cashier/checker for Allbrittons Restaurants. She stayed with them until she retired, always loving her work and always looking forward to the next day. She expecially enjoyed the times her son brought his family to the restaurant for supper. Milady retired in 1979 and moved to West Columbia to live in the Brooks Manor Apartments where she stayed for 32 years. While she lived at Brooks Manor, Milady knew all the residents and their apartment numbers. She enjoyed the residents’ company and hearing about their lives. She loved it when her grandchildren came over after school for fresh-baked bread or cookies. It was often a special treat for Milady’s granddaughter to help in the making of the cookies. Her grandchildren were a very important part of her

life.

After she retired, Milady often babysat for extra money. She dearly loved the children whom she kept.

Also during these years, Milady did a lot of crocheting — baby caps and blankets, adult caps, pot holders in the form of ears of corn, butterflies, and just simple squares, rounds, and rectangles. She also knitted many afghans — at least one for every grandchild as well as for her son and daughter-inlaw and her parents.

At one point, Milady’s son suggested that she enter a blanket, cap, and pot holder with the least mistakes in the Brazoria County Fair. Milady said, “What mistakes?! If I make a mistake, I rip it out and redo it!” She won blue ribbons on all three of her entries. Her son had a way of using up some of his nine lives!

Milady is survived by son Royce Arnold and wife Annette of West Columbia; grandsons Tony Arnold of Troup, Craig Arnold of Rosharon, Lieutenant Colonel Quinton Arnold and wife Tracie of Kempner, Aaron Arnold and wife Jody of Orange, Vincent Grubb and wife Lorena of Brazoria, and Keith Grubb of Clearwater, Florida; granddaughter Donnette Kopacz and husband Derick of Humble; great-grandchildren to whom she was known as “Old Granny” - Colin and Kennadi Arnold of Orange, Macayla and Mackenzie Kopacz of Humble, and Jocelyn Grubb of Brazoria; and several nieces and nephews.

Milady passed away Wednesday, April 27, 2011, in Sweeny Nursing Home. Her celebration of life was held Saturday, April 30 at Baker Funeral Home.

Resolution of Sympathy

We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge Novy Tabor, No. 17, New Tabor, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed lodge sister, FRANCES JOSEPHINE (SUROVIK) SLOMINSKI, who passed away on Wednesday, December 1, 2010, at her daughter’s home in College Station.

Sister Slominski was born on June 18, 1928, in the New Tabor community in Burleson County to John and Fannie (Sefcik) Surovik. She gradu-

ated from Caldwell High School in 1945 and completed Durham Business School in 1946. Frances married Joseph Slominski in St. Joseph Catholic Church in Bryan on June 21, 1953. They were married 36 years, and together they raised three wonderfully gifted children. Her love of children eventually led her to babysitting children in her home. Many of the families that she sat for continued to hold a special place in her life.

Sister Slominski was an avid football and baseball fan of the Texas A&M Aggies and Houston Astros.

She enjoyed gardening and sharing the fruits of her labor with family and friends. She was fascinated with the

work of the FBI and had a lifelong dream of being a detective. She truly devoted herself to her two grandchildren, Taylor and Angeles, and made it a point to attend their sporting events and dance performances.

Sister Slominski was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and brothers Walter and Milton.

Survivors include son Vince and wife Ivanka Slominski; daughters Jackie and husband Larry Keller and Carolyn and husband Robert Abt; grandchildren Taylor Abt and Angeles Keller; and her second family Deitrich and Kristi Bengs and their children Eric, Karl, Keri, and Walter.

The Second Annual SPJST Education and Nature Center (ENC) Barbecue Cookoff was held Friday, April 29 and Saturday, April 30 at Cooper Farm. Seven teams participated in this event. All participants enjoyed the weekend that was filled with friendly competition and good laughs. All teams checked in on Friday evening, and the cooking began early on Saturday morning.

Section “Call in” youth club meeting set for June 6

Attention youth club members and others interested in learning more about the SPJST’s great youth program. Make plans to meet — by telephone — Monday, June 6 at 7 p.m. for the SPJST Youth Department’s call-in youth club meeting. This call-in meeting represents an effort by the Youth Department to use technology to bring young people together.

Both teleconferencing and Internet teleconference are being explored as ways to introduce young people to the SPJST Youth Program, especially those members belonging to lodges without youth clubs or living in areas not presently accessible to a youth club. Lodge 17, New Tabor Youth Compete at BPA Conference in Washington, DC

Grace and I competed in Washington, DC, at the Business Professionals of America National Leadership Conference on May 4, 2011. I am excited to report that I placed second in my individual event — desktop publishing,

and Grace also placed second in her individual event—fundamental work processing skills. We also placed fourth in our administrative support team event.

Lodge 24, Cyclone youth to attend baseball game

On May 8, 2011, Lodge 24, Cyclone Youth Club held its monthly meeting after the Mother’s Day Barbecue at Flag Hall. Each member was asked to work for a bit at the barbecue for our Join Hands Day project and to also bring two desserts per family.

Thanks to all who helped work and all who supported SPJST Lodge 24!

The meeting started with a lot of excitement knowing that officer elections were coming soon. During the meeting, Mrs. Joan went over some important dates:

May 22—Round Rock Express Baseball game.

June 10 to 12—LIT Workshop.

Way to go, Sam and Rachel, for being our leaders-in-training this year!

June 17—District Two Swim Party at Walker Pool from 7 to 9 p.m. Don’t forget - you can bring a friend. Also, this will be our June meeting starting at 6:30 p.m. And, one more thing on that day - your YAD cards are due, and camp forms can be turned in that day, also. Lodge 17, New Tabor Youth Receives Daughters of American Revolution Good Citizen Award

It was an honor to be selected from my high school to receive the Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen Award. It was awarded for having demonstrated the qualities of dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism (qualities I learned from being an SPJST Youth Club member).

I had to write an essay about “Our American Heritage and our Responsibility for Preserving It,” and I then had to read it at the presentation of the awards. It has been awhile since I delivered a speech, but it all came back to me quite easy. I received a certificate and a pin that I will wear on the

day of my graduation.

I would like to also thank Mrs. Jane Ann Giese, Mrs. Janice Easter, and Mrs. Robin Humphrey for nominating me for this award.

Dear Readers, On Saturday, April 2, 2011, Lodge 47, Seaton hosted a benefit for Patsy and Albert Koslovsky. It was so touching to see how many people showed up to help these two wonderful people. I can’t think of two more deserving people. They have done so much for not just our youth club but all of District Two. They deserved this benefit more than anyone that I can think of. They are amazing people, and I can’t think of anyone who does not love them. I am so thankful that our lodge was able to help them. It was the best feeling to know that I was helping someone I love very much.

I also went to Sokol exhibition in Ennis. We did group performance. It was totally cool because at the end, we all crawled on top of each other to

Lodge 84, Dallas Lodge 84, Dallas Youth Club reports youth reports on district meeting on District Three meeting Dear Readers,

The District Three Spring Meeting was held at Lodge 84, Dallas on Sunday, May 1, 2011. The meeting was brought to order at 11:30 a.m. with the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance and the youth club motto. State Youth Director Frank Horak was then introduced by Assistant DYC Lynda Novak. A motion was made to defer the reading of the fall meeting minutes until fall. Assistant DYC Novak gave a briefing for the past meeting and updates of fundraising projects and camp activities.

Also, we were reminded that all Youth Achievement Day (YAD) cards and camp forms will be due to Sister Novak on or before May 31. This includes a complete copy of shot records and the rules of conduct forms.

The meeting was then adjourned, but to be continued after lunch. My brother has more to report in his letter, so be sure and read it.

Lodge 202 Jourdanton youth: Super kick!

Super sick!

On April 30 and March 1, 2011, my soccer team, the Sun Devils, was in Austin playing for the right to go to the state playoffs the next weekend.

We placed second in the tournament with two wins and one tie so we were off to state!

We made plans for Houston, and I was so excited to go. I was sure we would do great!

But then a couple of days before the state playoffs, I got some “bug” with a horrible fever, headache, chills, etc. I had to rest all day at home. I felt even worse when I found out that I wouldn’t be able to play Saturday or Sunday.

I was just too weak and too sick. Even though I missed the big trip to Houston, my team members did great!

They didn’t win state, but they put up an excellent fight. My coach brought home a medal for me saying, “I was part of the team that got them there. I deserved the medal just as much as they did!”

I can’t wait until next year’s finals, but like my mom said, “In order to get to the finals, you have to have a good season and play well at playoffs.” I’m sure my team and I will make it to the finals next year, but for now, I’m going to enjoy no practice for a month or so.

Lodge 202 Jourdanton youth: my crazy Saturday

Weekends are always crazy, but my Saturday was just a little too much. It started off in the morning when I had to wake up early to go to my 8 a.m. basketball game. I held off breakfast since we were running a little late, so I was very hungry. We got out there, and I started to warm up. The game started, and right off the bat, the other team got ahead. We tried to catch up, and got close at one point. I got the offensive rebound and shot, and I had made it! It was an amazing feeling to know I helped the team a little more.

Sadly at the end, we lost our game by 12 points, but we put up a good fight.

We went to get some breakfast and came back for another basketball game. I guess my energy kicked in with everybody else because we were on fire! We were ahead all game, and I retrieved seven or eight rebounds and blocked a shot. The final buzzer sounded, and we had won the game by 12 points!

Right afterwards, we went to our neighborhood clubhouse to make kolaches with Lodge 202, Jourdanton Youth Club. We put them in the oven, and all the kids went swimming. We had a lot of fun, and I even got a tan.

It was so relaxing. After cleaning up the clubhouse and packaging the kolaches to take to the church, I went with my old volleyball friend, Caroline, to an Aggie barbecue at San Antonio Aggie Park. We ran all over the

grounds finding candy, a creepy clown, snow cones, a bounce house, and even an adorable puppy from the Humane Society that was for auction.

I wish I could have taken him home!

It was about 10:30 p.m. by then, the time passing us by. I finally made it home and went to bed right away because who knows how crazy Sunday could be!

Lodge 202, Jourdanton Youth Club Learns Art of Kolache Making

My family hosted the Lodge 202, Jourdanton Youth Club at our community clubhouse on May 7, 2011, for a meeting that included making kolaches. My mother had to take my sister to her basketball game early that morning so I was left in charge. My grandparents, Lloyd and Bettie House, came up to help me and the youth have a great day.

We started making the yeast dough

and while it was rising, we held our meeting. Some of our members had never made kolaches before, so we had a great time learning. One of our youth is in the hospital, so we all made get well cards hopefully to brighten her day. We grilled some sausage links for lunch and ate between cooking activities. When the kolaches went in the oven, the adults sent us out to swim, play basketball, etc.

We made nine dozen apple, cherry, strawberry, and cream cheese kolaches.

Afterwards, we packaged most of them up (we had to “taste test” a few). We donated the kolaches to our church for Mother’s Day breakfast the next morning. We posted a sign so people would know who made them and included some pictures of us making the kolaches. Several people came up to us on Sunday, asking about the organization

and complimenting us on the delicious food. Some asked if we were taking a collection for our group, but we explained that we are all about giving to our communities. It made us feel good to do something for others that promoted our heritage and our organization.

Where Foxes Say Goodnight

Any ideas? Well, that was a fox barking, a noise which may be familiar to people in countries where urban foxes are an everyday reality but for Czechs this is still the sound of the wilderness.

The fox - liška - is famed as an extremely cunning animal - and not only in Czech. Liška is both the generic word and a female fox - vixen. A male fox is lišák. If someone is described as either liška or lišák, he or she is definitely sly and crafty - just like a fox.

Usually, the full expression is liška podšitá - a wily fox. Literally, it means a “lined fox,” originally probably a lined fox fur coat - an expression which over time acquired a whole new meaning.

The species is called the red fox in English but in Czech we say the colour of fox fur is ginger. About people with red hair, Czechs say zrzavý jako liška - ginger like a fox.

Foxes are predators and are feared by farmers, who probably coined the expression “to love someone like a fox in a henhouse” - mít někoho rád jako lišku v kurníku - meaning not to like the person at all.

Foxes in fairy tales and fables are also vain and especially proud of their long furry tails. There is a saying: Každá liška svůj ocas chválí - every fox praises its tail - meaning everyone brags about their own qualities, everyone advertises their own goods.

My favourite Czech idiom about foxes uses the image of a fox to describe a remote, deserted place, the middle of nowhere. Tam, kde dávají lišky dobrou noc - where the foxes say goodnight - is a place so far away and so isolated that even the foxes have nothing to say to it but goodnight.

That, of course, is not the case with urban foxes, who most likely say goodnight somewhere near the garbage cans.

Kolache Klobase Festival set for June 11 in East Bernard

This is the 21st year for the annual Czech Kolache Klobase Festival scheduled for Saturday, June 11, 2011, at Riverside Hall in East Bernard, Texas. The event brings people together to enjoy good music, good food and to celebrate ethnic heritage and culture.

Beginning at 10:30 a.m. and continuing nonstop Lauren Hennecke shows off kolaches until 8:30 at Kolache Klobase p.m., this Festival. year’s festival again features a first-rate lineup of entertainers.

This year’s entertainers include Texas Sound Czech, Czech and Then Some, Dujka Bros., Red Ravens, Texas Legacy Czech Band, Al Sulak’s Country Sounds, and Central Texas Sounds.

There will again be a three-band concert at 4:30 p.m. inside the hall, and this year—for the first time—there will also be a two-band concert outside in the pavilion at 5 p.m. featuring the Central Texas Sounds and Al Sulak’s Country Sounds.

Two sets of dancers are also on the program this year – Sheila Taylor’s Taps and Mats Studio performers and students from Keller Academy of Performing Arts.

Festival admission remains at $7 per person; children 12 and under will be admitted free of charge. The admission fee covers all entertainment

and music provided by bands and entertainers in the hall and outdoors in the pavilion. Massive water fans will cool the pavilion to provide a more comfortable setting for dancers and spectators. A large, mesh canopy will cover an area in front of the pavilion to protect festival visitors from the heat of the June sun. Arts and crafts booths will be located both inside and outside the hall. Crafts and goods of every kind will be available for sale.

This is a good opportunity to shop for all types of hand-crafted items, jewelry, and clothing. The cakewalk returns this year providing an opportunity to win a delicious cake to take home and enjoy.

Kid games and activities will keep the youngsters occupied. They will also enjoy a performance at 12:30 p.m. by students from Sheila Taylor’s Taps and Mats Studio No. 2. Czech costumed students from the Keller Academy of Performing Arts of East Bernard will also perform typical Czech folk dances at 3:30 p.m. The Academy is under the direction and choreography of Tanya Keller.

A plate lunch will be served featuring sausage, barbecue chicken, sauerkraut, and other trimmings. The sausage and chicken will be prepared on site the morning of the festival by society members assuring a fresh cooked meal. Serving will begin at 11 a.m. Drive-thru plates to go will be offered from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Festival admission will not be charged for drive-thru plate customers. Of course, hundreds of kolaches will be available for sale throughout the day. Hamburgers and sausage sandwiches will be available in the afternoon.

Ingredients: • 1 1/2 lbs cabbage, shredded • 1 cup water • 1 medium onion, chopped • 1/2 cup lard • 1/3 cup flour • 1/2 teaspoon caraway seed • salt • 4 teaspoons sugar • 1/3 cup vinegar

Directions: 1. Simmer cabbage in water for 5 minutes.

2. Drain, saving liquid.

3. Brown onion in lard, add flour and stir until brown.

4. Pour in the liquid from the cabbage and stir until smooth.
