October is Czech Heritage Month in Texas. Broken English
Czech Feszt Set for October 23 in Temple
Put on your dancing shoes, and get ready to eat lots of great Czech sausage and pastries and to have tons of fun because Czech Feszt is just around the corner! The 2010 Czech Feszt will be held on Saturday, October 23 at Fred Springer Park (formerly the Santa Fe Gardens) and the Community Market located on Avenue B between Main Street and the Santa Fe Depot. The
hours will be from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. As an added bonus, beginning at 1 p.m., there will be “Bingo, Bingo, Bingo” in the Santa Fe Depot. This is the fourth year of celebrating the rich heritage of the Czech culture in Central Texas. Polka music and dancing will be non-stop during the day,

Broken English was among the talk that quite naturally sprung from immigrants, both old and young in Texas known as Bohemian
They had no schooling, but in lieu they loved hard work, that’s all they knew But because they came from a Slavic land it was English, they couldn’t understand

So they combined some Texan/Czech and created a new dialect A mixture of Czech and English words Broken English then emerged
The “Americans” all rediculed they laughed at them, poor and unschooled Mocked their odd pronunciation criticized their enunciation Being wronged, strengthened them despite the Czechs did not give up the fight and eventually with spunk and pride progressed by working, side by side
Continuing Czech Traditions
With determination, they succeeded and got the education needed They studied hard, not to be outdone instead, outdid those who had made fun
Leading the first dance at the 50th anniversary celebration of SPJST Lodge 92, Fort Worth in 1960 were youth club members Sherrie Kubala Watkins and R.L. Alholm. They also led the first dance at the lodgeʼs 100th anniversary celebration on September 18, 2010. And, they passed the tradition to youth club members 2008 State Queen Alexa Hubenak and 2009 State King Jackson Durham, both of Lodge 92, Fort Worth. See celebration pictures on pages 25 to 28.
