Lodge 49, Rowena member Jerrie Schuhmann achieves Age 96

SPJST congratulates Geraldine “Jerrie” Schuhmann, a member of SPJST Lodge 49, Rowena who celebrated her 96th birthday on September 20, 2010. Sister Jerrie will be entitled to all SPJST member benefits with no further dues or assessments required. Born September 20, 1914, to the late George and Rosalie Schovajsa, of Miles, Texas, Geraldine (later known as “Jerrie”) was the youngest of 10 children. Raymond (died as an infant), and Jerrie at 96 has survived John, Caroline (“Carrie” Merrill), Rudolph, Teresa (“Tracy” Garrett), Edward, Julia (Heinze), William “Buck,” and Albert. At age six, Jerrie started school in the one room school house of Redbank, where she attended first through sixth grades. Her grades seven through 11 (no 12th grade then) were enjoyed at Miles High School, where she graduated salutatorian with a class of about 25 students in 1931. Jerrie attended the College of Mines and Metallurgy for one year in El Paso, Texas, then returned to Miles to wed Earle C. “Dutch” Schuhmann of Rowena in 1936. She was a housewife for many years and mother to two sons, E. Charles Schuhmann, Jr., now in Roanoke, Texas, Franklin J. Schuhmann, now in Odessa, Texas, and one daughter, G.A. “Jeri” Schuhmann of

Seattle, Washington. She now has two grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. A graduate of San Angelo Business College in 1954, Jerrie and Dutch moved their family to Odessa, which has been their home for over 55 years. She worked as the secretary and bookkeeper to the superintendent of nurses at Medical Center Hospital for 17 years, and after several years at Foreman Electric she was finally replaced by a computer in 1982. Following retirement, she and Dutch enjoyed visiting relatives while on trips to Dallas area, San Antonio, the Pacific Northwest and Vancouver, British Columbia, the Astro Dome in Houston for baseball, and celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary for two weeks in Hawaii. Celebrate Czech Heritage in October

A total of 24 adults and youth from Lodge 154, Fort Worth gathered at Lodge 154 member Rosie Steinman’s house to clean her yard recently. Members joined together to mow the yard, rake leaves, and trim the bushes. More on page 18.
