Free Disneyland Tickets For a Day of Volunteer Service In 2010, Disneyland is offering free tickets in a promotion called “Give a Day. Get a Disney Day.” It’s a simple concept—you give a day of volunteer service to an approved organization and get a free, one-day ticket to Disneyland park.

To get in on the deal, visit their site to get all the details. Registration began January 1, 2010. The basics are pretty simple: sign up, pick a volunteer opportunity and once you’ve finished your day of service, you’ll get a free ticket voucher. You have to be at least 18 years old to sign up, but children as young as six can volunteer as long as an adult goes with them. You must have a residence in the United States, Puerto Rico or Canada and no matter how many hours you put in, you’ll only get one ticket.

The promotion ends December 15, 2010, at the latest, but they say ticket quantities are limited and it could end sooner. There are also a few days when the volunteer vouch-

ers can’t be used.

Faster Than a Speeding Bullet A state trooper noticed a car driving along the highway very slowly.

His radar clocked the vehicle at 22 mph. The trooper, worried that the driver might be in trouble, turned on his siren and brought the slow-moving car to a stop.

The driver was an elderly man. In the back seat sat two old ladies, both trembling with fright. “What’s wrong, officer?” asked the driver. “I was driving the speed limit. It was on the sign back there.”

The trooper realized what had happened. “Sir, that wasn’t the speed limit sign, that was the route number.

The speed limit is 65. You’re on Highway 22.”

“Oh,” the man said with a nod.

“Sorry about that.”

The trooper looked into the back seat. “Are they all right?”

“Those are my sisters,” said the driver. “They’ll be fine. We just got off Highway 175.”

Instructor seeks Czech questionnaire participation

Dear Věstník Readers, Dobrý den! My name is Lida Cope. I am a firstgeneration Czech from the Olomouc region of the Czech Republic. I live in North Carolina and teach at East Carolina University Lida Cope in Greenville. In 1997, I spent some time in Texas interviewing Texans of Czech descent to better understand the role of the heritage language

and culture in your daily lives. I might have had spoken with some of you then! I had a great deal of help from the generous, hospitable people of “Czech Texas” for which I am very grateful. Thanks to much kind assistance, I collected more than 250 questionnaires on the language, culture, and attitudes of Texas Czechs. This year, I’m trying to gain more up-todate information in order to compare the state of the Texas Czech community “then and now,” some 10 years later. I’ve also asked for participation via Našinec, the Texas Czech Heritage and Culture Center’s Office and Library in La Grange, and other means.

Dear Věstník readers, if you are willing to fill out a questionnaire on your experience with and in the Texas Czech culture, or know somebody who might, please write, email, or call me so I can send you a copy. I will gladly cover the postage for any mailed questionnaires.

In addition, the newspaper’s editor, Ms. Zavodny, has kindly suggested placing the questionnaire on the website www.spjst.org to make it more readily available.

While I need to collect some biographical information from you for research purposes, all participants will remain anonymous in any published results. SPJST extends its thanks and appreciation to the many members who are achieving membership landmarks in 2010.

This week’s Vestnik lists the SPJST members achieving 50- and 75-years of membership in the SPJST and the Age 96 and Age 100 members. Congratulations to these honorees.

Members who achieve “The Grand Age of 96” receive special recognition in SPJST. At this special age, members are considered to have “outlived” the terms of their insurance certificate and are allowed to collect its proceeds.

Lodge 4 Hallettsville members celebrate Christmas

Dear Members, Our lodge held its monthly meeting and Christmas social on Sunday, December 6, 2009, at the American Legion Hall beginning at 11:30 a.m.

At 12:30 p.m., President Joe Siptak welcomed everyone. It was noted to dispense with the order of business.

One of the guests at the Lodge 15, Buckholts December Christmas meeting was Regina Peevey who entertained us playing Czech and Christmas tunes on her accordion. It was beautiful and added so much to our meeting.

Chudej read a resolution of sympathy for our departed member Mary Kutach.

A delicious meal was enjoyed consisting of fried chicken furnished by the lodge and a large variety of side dishes and desserts brought by the members.

FAC Annie Vahalik thanked everyone for the donations of food items for the Manna Food Pantry in Hallettsville and Gayenell Chudej who assists there for volunteering to deliver the donations. Annie led the members in singing Christmas carols. Door prizes were then awarded to Jonathan Vanek, Vicky Orsak, Evelyn Holy, Helen Zabransky, Alton Chudej, Philip Vahalik, Patsy Zabransky, Al Jonietz, Susan Siptak, Sarah Siptak, Bernice Marek, and Jonathan Vahalik.

Youth club members Jonathan Vahalik, Jamie Vanek, Mark and Sarah Siptak, and Jonathan Vahalik read Christmas poems. They also gave out Christmas cards that they had made, and fruit and candy to the members.

The youth club also gave $100 to the Manna Food Pantry.

President Siptak and FAC Annie Vahalik presented District Six Czech Heritage Museum Director Philip Vahalik a check from the proceeds of the lodge’s dessert booth at Czech Feszt held in Temple in October.

Bingo games were then enjoyed.

Many thanks to Annie for calling and getting the prizes provided by the lodge and fruit from the youth club and Bernice Marek.

The next meeting will be Sunday, January 10, 2010, at the Legion Tap Room at 2 p.m.

Lodge 18, Elgin installs 2010 officers

President Charles Wilson opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance and silent prayer for all SPJST members.

Roll call had all officers present with guests District Two Director Bobby Wuensche and wife Ruth.

Shirlene Matetzschk read the minutes. Glenward Matetzschk gave the treasurer’s report. Both were approved as read.

Irene Vrabel gave the upcoming events and said we need to select a fraternalist of the year for 2009.

Joyce Nelson gave the youth report.

The youth participated in the Elgin Parade of Lights in December. They had their Christmas party. The youth made

donations to Blue Santa and the food pantry. They made ornaments for the Golden Years Retirement residents and will make ornaments for the S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living residents in Taylor.

Gladys Mogonye was absent; Charles Wilson gave her report on the dance ticket income.

Irene Helgren gave the house report and thanked Ray Nelson for closing the hall for her after the rentals. Irene thanked Joyce Nelson for purchasing the table covering for our Christmas dance. Irene thanked the decorating group—Glenward and Shirlene Matetzschk, Sam Morgan, Waldine Wierscheske, Katy Mogonye, Betty Gaskamp, Evelyn Gustafson, and Irene and Johnny Vrabel. The hall looked great. We want to thank all the wonderful people who brought desserts to help us put on this lunch.

Lodge 47, Seaton sets annual tarok tournament

SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton’s annual tarok tournament is this Saturday, January 16, 2010, at Seaton Star Hall. Registration is from 8 to 8:45 a.m. Starting table will be drawn by players prior to the tournament start. Play begins at 9 a.m.

Entry fee is $20 per person and includes noon meal and snacks. Prizes will be awarded.

Lodge 48 Beyersville gives to Fort Hood memorial

The meeting of Lodge 48, Beyersville was called to order by President Robert Leshikar on December 1, 2009.

The Pledge of Allegiance was recited. Minutes stood approved as read.

Property Committee report—They will meet in January and bring the thought of “where do we want to go in 2010” to us in the February meeting,

The youth are going to meet on December13 and sack the fruit bags.

Bonnie Wolf gave the hall manager’s report stating that December is booked up.

Ruth Ann Wuensche gave the FAC report. The State Progressive 42 Tournament will be hosted by Lodge 24, Cyclone on January 9, 2010. The 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive is still going on until March 31. Lodge 6, Cottonwood will host the State Tarok Tournament on February 6.

Under old business, Juanette and Ruth will pick out 20 poinsettias for $5 each from the Taylor Brethren Church to be used for prizes for the lodge’s Christmas party. Bobby will donate some prizes for the Christmas party as well.

Under new business, a motion was made to donate $100 for the trees in memory of the soldiers killed at Fort Hood.

Lodge 80, Holland reports on January meeting

The meeting of SPJST Lodge 80, Holland was called to order on January 2, 2010, at 4:10 p.m. by President Rita Spinn. The membership stood for the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence for departed members.

Lodge 177 Academy gives to Fort Hood memorial project

The regular meeting of Lodge 177, Academy was held at Golden Corral Restaurant and was called to order at 6:30 p.m. by President Otis Beck. All officers were present. Louis Driska led members in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

Brother Otis welcomed everyone to the December social. Special guests were Supreme Lodge Vice President Gene McBride and his lovely wife Frances.

Brother Otis asked Brother McBride to say a few words about SPJST’s effort to raise money for the a memorial for the victims of the November 5 Fort Hood shooting. Don McCrea made the motion for Lodge 177 to donate $1,000 to the fund. Motion passed unanimously.

Lodge 202 Jourdanton gives to county livestock show

Lodge 202, Jourdanton met for its first meeting of the new year on Sunday, January 3, 2010, at the Jourdanton Community Center with 31 members and guests present. President Lloyd House presided. Flag Bearers Liliana Wiederhold and Sammy Hoggard posted the colors and led the Pledge of Allegiance. Silence was observed for the deceased.

Secretary Bettie House read the minutes that were approved as read.

Treasurer Valerie Barta presented the financial report.

The lodge accepted two new members and a new sales agent.

FAC Mary Ann Barta handed out copies of fraternal incentive reports that she completes. Members are asked to report activities to her each month.

Youth Leader Regina House reported the CASA director was ecstatic about the abundance of shoeboxes packed with surprises. The children look forward to receiving these gifts each Christmas. The lodge youth enjoyed their Christmas party at Holiday Inn Express in Jourdanton.

Lodge 202 voted to donate $200 to the Atascosa County Livestock Show auction. Michelle House will be exhibiting goats. Good luck, Michelle!

Celebrating birthdays in January are Joan Wiederhold, Miranda Wiederhold, Ernest Spacek, and Regina House.

Congratulations to Gussie and Ernest Spacek on their 68th wedding anniversary on January 28.

What Texans should know about providing their social security number

According to the Federal Trade Commission, Texas ranks second in the nation for identity theft complaints. In 2008, nearly 32,000 Texans were identity theft victims and, as a result, lost thousands of dollars and hours of time attempting to correct their credit ratings and personal financial history.

Identity theft occurs when a criminal illegally uses someone else’s personal information – a name, address, driver’s license number, credit or debit

card account number or Social Security number – to commit fraud or other crimes.

Fortunately, increased identity theft awareness has made Texans much more cautious about freely providing their personal information. One particularly sensitive part of a person’s identity is his or her Social Security number (SSN). Many Texans call the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) to ask when and where they are required to give out their SSN. One of our most commonly received questions on this subject is, “Can a private business ask for my Social Security number?” Generally, the answer is yes. The law does not prohibit a business from asking for a person’s SSN; however, the customer has options and does not have to provide that information.

which triggers mandatory Internal Revenue Service notification. Texans should be aware, though, that businesses can refuse to provide products or services to customers who fail to provide their SSN. If a business insists that customers provide their SSN and customers feel this is not justified, customers may want to ask for a supervisor or manager to discuss the situation. If the company is unwilling to budge, Texans may want to consider taking their business elsewhere.

Be aware that while federal law does not forbid a business from asking for a person’s SSN, it does mandate that the business protect any numbers it collects. People who provide their SSN to a private business should familiarize themselves with the company’s privacy policy.

Texas law also requires that businesses safeguard their clients’ sensitive personal information, including names, addresses, financial information and SSN. The OAG has charged several commercial vendors with un-

lawfully failing to protect such information.

Many Texans also inquire about government agencies and whether they have the right to ask for a person’s SSN. Federal law does compel government agencies to ask for a SSN in certain instances.

For example, certain government agencies, including taxing authorities, human resource offices and departments of motor vehicles, can require a SSN as mandated by federal law.

Federal law does provide protections when citizens are required to divulge their SSN. The Privacy Act of 1974 requires that all government agencies that request Social Security numbers provide a disclosure statement on the form. The statement explains whether citizens are required to provide their SSN or if it is optional.

Additionally, the document details how a person’s SSN will be used.

The Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs in the U. S. Office of Management and Budget provides guidance and oversight regarding the

Privacy Act of 1974. Interested Texans may read the Act on the U.S. Department of Justice Web site at www.usdoj.gov.

The Privacy Act also provides that citizens cannot be denied government benefits or services if they refuse to disclose their SSN – if the disclosure is not required by federal law or if the disclosure is to an agency which has been using Social Security numbers prior to January 1975.

Texans who are asked to give their SSN to a government agency but do not receive a disclosure statement may want to cite the Privacy Act and contact their U.S. congressmen or senators.

Points To Remember Social Security Number • You do NOT have to give your SSN to a private business.

• If you are required to give your SSN to a government agency, you must be provided with a disclosure statement.

• Never give out your SSN or other personal information over the phone or by e-mail.

• Report ID theft to your local police department.

• File an ID theft complaint on FTC’s website at www.ftc.gov or call (877) ID THEFT.

Stress relieving tips in 60 seconds or less

Lodge 24, Cyclone Youth Club meets this Sunday

Dear Readers, The last meeting of the Lodge 24, Cyclone Youth Club was called to order on December 13, 2009, at the Temple Mall at 2:10 p.m. Many members brought new toys to the meeting.

We were able to donate 30 items to the Temple High School Day Care. They were very grateful to receive our donations. Thanks to everyone who contributed!

Our youth club held a short meeting in which we discussed changes for the next meeting, which will now be on January 17. We will meet at Flag Hall and drive to the Arctic Wolf Ice Center in Bryan. Dress warmly and wear long socks for ice skating!

Lodge 30, Taiton Youth Club reports on December meeting

The December 13, 2009, meeting of SPJST Lodge 30, Taiton Youth Club was held at Taiton Community Center and was called to order by Vice President Vincent Lutringer at 10:15 a.m.

Luc Marcaurele led the youth club members in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, SPJST motto, and prayer.

The roll of officers and members was called and the minutes were read

by Secretary Sarah Supak. The treasurer’s report was given by Treasurer

Under old business, our Christmas social is today, and the youth club members made centerpieces for the tables. These decorations will also be given as door prizes. Youth club members then discussed an outing for the month of January. It was decided to have our outing in conjunction with our January meeting at the El Campo Bowling Center.

Under new business, the 2010 youth program theme is “Dobry Den—SPJST Spirit 2010.” Youth club members were told the 2010 camp tee-shirt design is due January 31. They were told if they brought their design to the next meeting, an incentive would be given. LIT Retreat is scheduled for June 11 to 13 at SPJST ENC at Cooper Farm.

Mrs. Bubela read over and discussed the newsletter from the SPJST Home Office. She also wished everyone a merry Christmas. Christmas presents were given to each family from Mrs. Bubela.

The December birthday celebrant was Jessica Fucik.

When I made it to the bottom, I was ready to go again. I really enjoyed snowboarding and hanging out at the ski lodge. I hope to do it again.

Lodge 202 Jourdanton youth: Lodge 202 a snowboarding Jourdanton youth adventure stay busy

The week before Christmas, my mom took us to Ruidoso, New Mexico, to enjoy the snow. I learned to snowboard last April in Alaska and was ready to hit the slopes. I took it easy at first, but then started trying some jumps with some success. I tried some harder trails and by the second day decided I would try a “blue.”

When I stood at the top, I thought “what are all those ants doing at the bottom of the hill,” and then I realized they were people.

Although I was a little nervous, I started slowly progressing down the slope. I took a tumble head over heels and slid about 50 feet before finally slowing enough to pull myself upright.

Several of the Lodge 202, Jourdanton youth attended the adult Christmas party in Floresville on December 15, 2009, and enjoyed playing Bunco.

Later that day, the Jourdanton Youth Club met in Jourdanton at the Holiday Inn for a youth club Christmas party.

We enjoyed Italian food provided by the parents. Everyone brought a board game for the gift exchange.

Our youth leader, Regina House, read a story with a lot of “left” and “right” words, and we passed the gifts according to the story. After opening the gifts, we tried out our new games.

We also brought wrapped shoe boxes filled with small gifts for CASA. Together, we made Christmas a little spe-

Dear Vestnik Readers, I have been busy lately. I performed at Sokol for the Christmas exhibition.

I actually sat on Santa’s lap this time, and no one made me. I wanted to this year! I went to April’s Christmas Encore Program. I went to the SPJST December youth club meeting. SPJST

youth sang at the IOOF Nursing Home. The people at the nursing home liked us. They wanted us to come back the next day. Youth club members went and talked to each person there.

Guess what? It snowed on Christmas Eve. That was the first time that

I saw it snow on Christmas Eve. It was very cold outside. I was at my Grandma Dorothy Dvorak’s house celebrating Christmas when it snowed. We went to the Children’s Christmas Mass.

We took care of a lot of paperwork, talked about the camp tee-shirt contest and other important dates. The leaders told us we have a fun project planned for our next regular meeting.

I wasn’t very excited about going to Ruidoso, New Mexico, at first because I wanted to skateboard with my friends during Christmas break, but Mom insisted. However, when I strapped on my snowboard and hit the slopes, I remembered how much fun it was to glide over the snow. It only took a few minutes to adjust my balance to the different board. It was a beautiful day and fun to spend it with my brother and sister, exploring new trails.

The second day, we saw our cousin and her friend and shared the afternoon together trying different lifts.

That evening, my brother and I pulled out our skateboards to ride down main street after the stores had closed. I discovered my skateboarding skills were a little off after spending the whole day on a snowboard.

On the last day, it was really cold, and a storm was brewing. The snow began to fall before lunch, and I decided I was going to call it quits. My sister talked me into one more run, but

we left soon after to get home before the storm. The next day, I went back to skateboarding and enjoyed skating with my friends for the rest of the holidays.

Lodge 202 Jourdanton youth: looked like Christmas

but I had to make one more run as the snowflakes swirled around me, sticking in my hair and on my nose. Luckily, my mom bought some heavenly hot chocolate topped with extra whipped cream and chocolate syrup to warm me up.

Watching the snow fall put me in the Christmas spirit. We returned home to spend a wonderful Christmas with my grandparents.

When school let out for Christmas break, my family went to the ski slopes. We drove all day to get to Ruidoso, New Mexico. The next day, we hit the slopes – my brothers were on snowboards while I stayed with skis.

The snow was so beautiful, and the sun warmed our faces.

The second day, we met up with my cousin and tried some different trails.

We had fun exploring. The last day we were there, a storm was blowing in, and snowflakes started to float right before my eyes. It was getting colder,

Lodge 25, Ennis youth: December fun, fun, fun!

The SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis Youth Club had its December meeting. We finished decorating the Christmas trees for the nursing home. We did our Vestnik projects and played a game (throwing a ball at the snowman and trying to make it through the hole).

We decided on a date to go singing at the nursing home, and the next meet-

ing will be at the bowling alley.

We had pizza, desserts, and drinks.

Yummy! Super! Thanks, Betty. We sang at the IOOF Nursing Home. We sang a lot of songs. We sang so much we all were sweating.

I am also sending some pictures. I had Sokol exhibition, too, and I sat on Santa’s lap. I got a bag of goodies.

rak. Czechadees performed at the IOOF nursing home, too. April reads the second reading at the Children’s Christmas Mass at St. John’s Catholic Church. And, these are the presents I got for Christmas.

Lodge 84, Dallas Youth Club: Christmas Giving and Sharing

The Lodge 84, Dallas Youth Club had a busy day on November 21, 2009. First, we helped decorate the Buckner Benevolence Home for Christmas. We made craft ornaments, then we divided into groups to put them on the trees. They all looked beautiful when we were finished. In

front of the buildings, they had a fullsize Christmas train that Zachary and I tested out before we left. From there, we went to the lodge hall for a McDonald’s lunch, meeting, and Christmas program practice.

The Lodge 84 Christmas party was on December 13. We had a delicious

dinner before the annual youth program. There were several acts including: Kendall and Kayla dancing to “Suzy Snowflake,” youth club girls’ dance routine to “All I Want for Christmas is You,” youth club boys’ skit to “12 Redneck Days of Christmas,” and the Nativity scene/story.

At the end of the program, Santa came to visit! He talked with us and gave us all a goodie bag.

What is the Merit Point System?

Youth club members earn merit points for participating in SPJST lodge, district and state activities. At the end of the youth year, points are totaled and the youth with the highest points in the youth club receive cash awards.

In Memory of Mary Werner

In the still of peaceful slumber, Mary Kubena Werner yielded her spirit and went home to be with her Lord. Born of Czech heritage, she stands at heaven’s gate and says, “I have fought the good fight. I have finished the course. I have kept the faith.”

Mary Werner Mary Kubena Werner was born November 9, 1917, to Lee and Mary Krall in East Bernard, Texas. Mary Millie Krall married August S. Kubena in 1939.

They had four children—Genevieve Elliott, Jo (Josephine) Short, Caroline Woebse, and Martha Benevelli.

Mary loved gardening and canning and all that came out of her garden.

She was known to her grandchildren as “Grand Mary.” She did a lot of sewing and making school clothes for her daughters. She worked side by side with her husband running Kubena Boot Shop and Guy Cotton Gin. She was a member of SPJST Lodge 81, Needville for many, many years, serving as secretary for several of those years. Mary and August were married for 26 years. Later in life, she married Victor Werner. They were married for 30 years. They owned Werner Washeteria.

She is preceded in death by first husband August S. Kubena; second husband Victor Werner; sister Annie Kruppa; brother Emil Krall; son-inlaw Gary Woebse; and grandson Wendel Short.

Mary is survived by daughters Genevieve Elliott of Nashville, Tennessee, Josephine Short and husband Norman R. Short of Rosenberg, Texas, Caroline Woebse of Rosenberg, Texas, and Martha Benevelli and husband Thomas Benevelli of Southington, Connecticut; grandchildren August Skopik, Jr. and wife Sandi of Katy, Texas, Katherine Ann Skopik of Nashville, Tennessee, Marcella Lynn Moses and husband Michael Dale Moses of Corpus Christi, Texas, Christopher Lee Skopik and wife Shinelle of Katy, Texas, Pamela Crosley and husband Charles of Richmond, Texas, Lisa Woebse of Rosen-

berg, Texas, and Graham Benevelli and wife Tahira of Austin, Texas, great-grandchildren Lance Skopik, II, Chase and Brice Skopik, Donald Johnson, III, Colan and Allison Nelson, Michael, Jennifer, Jorden, and Matthew Moses, Ariel Englehart, Lisa, Skylar, and Miranda Skopik, and Katelyn, Hannah, and Seth Crosley.

Visitation was held from 5 to 8 p.m., Monday, December 28 in the State Room of Davis-Greenlawn Funeral Home in Rosenberg.

Services were held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, December 29 at the First Presbyterian Church of Rosenberg in Rosenberg, Texas. Interment followed at Needville Public Cemetery in Needville.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Rosenberg or to a charity of choice.

We, the members of the Resolution Committee of Lodge Hvezda Texasu, No. 47, Seaton, Texas, on behalf of our membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed sister, IRENE R. McCLAIN. Services for Irene R. Schiller McClain, 90, of Temple were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, December 19, 2009, at Temple Brethren Church. Larry Zabcik officiated. Burial followed in Ocker Brethren Cemetery in Zabcikville. Visitation was held Friday, December 18 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home in Temple.

Mrs. McClain died Wednesday, December 16 in a Temple hospital.

She was born on September 12, 1919, to Will T. Schiller and Rosie Chudej Schiller in Meeks. She graduated from Temple Junior College in 1939 then attended Southwest Texas State Teachers College. She was a

school teacher for three years teaching first, second, third, and fourth grades.

She married Temple McClain on November 20, 1942, and resided on a farm in Heidenheimer. She was employed by the Santa Fe Railroad for 15 years and later as a secretary at the Inspector General’s Office in Temple for 17 years. She had been a member of Temple Brethren Church since 1949.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years.

Survivors include daughter Brenda Peters of Kansas City, Missouri; brother Eugene Schiller of San Antonio; two grandchildren; and two greatgrandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Temple Brethren Church, 2202 Bird Creek Drive, Temple, 76502.

Expression of Sympathy

Dominic F. Netek, Sr., born on January 28, 1922, went to be with the Lord on December 21, 2009, at the age of 87 years after his long battle with Alzheimer’s.

Dominic served his country in the United States Army during World War II where he was honored an American Defense Medal, European Liberation Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, Silver Star, two Bronze Stars, and three Purple Hearts for bravery and wounds received liberating France and the homeland of Czechoslovakia.

He was a member of SPJST Lodge 133, San Antonio serving for many years as secretary of the lodge. He was also a member of KJT, Hermann Sons, St. Margaret Mary’s Men’s Club, and the director of the Czech Choral Club.

Don led his choral club in presentations around the state as he spread Czech heritage.

He is preceded in death by his beloved wife Marie J. Netek.

He is survived by his loving children Eileen Marie Netek Heath and husband Paul, Don F. Netek, Jr. and wife Claire, and Michael R. Netek and wife Debbie; grandchildren Donna Heath, Sandra Heath, Bryan Heath and wife Terri, Jack Netek and wife Honour, Jason Netek and wife Taryn, Mary Jane Codey and husband Sean, Christopher Netek, Eric Netek, and Fi-

Visitation was held on Tuesday, December 29 at 4 p.m. with a rosary recited at 6:30 p.m. at Mission Park Funeral Chapels South. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, December 30 at 10 a.m. at St. Margaret Mary’s Catholic Church. Interment followed at St. Matthew’s Catholic Cemetery in Jourdanton, Texas.

BVCHS, CEFT Czech course begins January 26

This spring, the Brazos Valley Czech Heritage Society (BVCHS) and the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas (CEFT) will again join together to offer Czech language classes in the greater Brazos Valley Area.

This 15-week course in the Czech language will begin Tuesday evening, January 26, 2010. These classes will be structured to accommodate both beginners and more advanced speakers of Czech. They will concentrate on conversational Czech and will be open to anyone who is interested.

This Czech language course will consist of 15 weekly class meetings every Tuesday evening from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., beginning Tuesday evening, January 26 and ending Tuesday evening, May 4. Late registrations will be accepted through Tuesday evening, February 9.

These classes will be held in the Saint Joseph Catholic Church Parish Activity Center, located at 700 East 26th Street in Bryan, Texas. Ample parking is available, and parking is free of charge. Instructional materials will be provided and are covered as part of the nominal tuition fee. No textbook is required.

The instructor for this course will be Ms. Jana Dreserova, the current holder of the CEFT William J. Hlavinka Czech Fellowship at Texas A&M University. Ms. Dreserova is from Hradec Kralove in the Czech Republic. She holds a master’s degree in English and history from Masaryk University in Brno, Moravia, Czech Republic, and is pursuing a degree in English literature at Texas A&M. TCGS: Czech veteran tribute rescheduled for March 27

Texas Czech Genealogical Society’s “Let Freedom Ring - A Tribute to Czech Veterans” has been rescheduled for Saturday, March 27, 2010.

The event will still be held at Caldwell Civic/Visitor Center, Caldwell, Texas.

We have many facets which we are striving to bring together including having the Czechs in Uniform books published and ready for purchase on this special day.

We anticipate being able to give a full and complete agenda for the day in the near future. In the meantime,

Po.L.K. of A. donates to Raphael’s Refuge

The Po.L.K. of A. (Texas Chapter 1) has generously donated $500 to Raphael’s Refuge. Members from numerous cities traveled to Flatonia, Texas, to take part in the Third Annual Celebration of the Feast Day of the Holy Innocents and present the gift. A large glass block will be engraved with the name of the Klub and the date. It will become part of a large cross to be erected in front of the monument.

The double mission of Raphael’s Refuge, a 501(c)(3) organization, is to

erect and maintain a monument to babies who have died from miscarriage, abortion, stillbirth, or in infancy and to provide counseling and spiritual direction on related issues, without charge. The monument, open daily, is located two miles outside of Flatonia at 2715 West Highway 90.

Czech Heritage Society offers scholarship

The Czech Heritage Society of Texas is accepting applications for the Victor Peter Memorial Scholarship.

The $500 stipend was established in memory of the late Victor Alfons Peter, who died in 1996. Peter was a retired businessman and a trustee of the Czech Heritage Society. Following the Velvet Revolution in Czechoslovakia in 1989, he was instrumental in reestablishing relationships between the Czechs of Texas and the Old Country.

The Victor Peter Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a graduating high school senior to help further his or her education. As part of their application, students will write a 300word essay on either of two topics.

The topics are: “A Family Member Who Represents Czech Heritage” or “A Family Member who Contributed to the Czech Heritage in the United States.” In addition, a high school transcript, two letters of recommendation, 200-word autobiography, a 100word statement explaining what he or she plans to study in college or at the university, list of 10 ways in which he or she has had contact with Czech culture, and a cover sheet including the student’s name, address, phone number, and high school's name, address and phone number. Students do not have to be associated with the Czech Heritage Society or be of Czech origin to apply.

The Czech Heritage Society of Texas was founded in 1982 with the purpose of preserving and promoting Czech heritage in the state.

Palacinky

Recipe from czechmatediary.com

Batter (for about 4 palacinky) 2 cups of milk 2 egg yolks 1 tablespoon sugar 1/4 teaspoon salt little over a 1/2 cup of all-purpose flour (= 0.65 cup; or 8 to 10 tablespoons) vegetable oil

Filling fruit yogurt and/or jam fresh fruit Nutella

Toppings Whipped cream powdered sugar powdered cocoa cinnamon chopped almonds or walnuts

Mix flour with salt. Mix egg yolks with sugar and slowly pour this mixture into the salted flour. Mix the batter until it looks very smooth. Lightly grease a small, non-stick pan and wait until the oil gets hot (medium-high).

Pour a thin layer of the batter on the pan, using a ladle. The hard part: when one side seems to be done (about 2 to 3 minutes), flip the palacinka using spatula.

Once palacinka is done, scoop it with your spatula on a plate. Spread jam and/or yogurt (or Nutella) all over the palacinka surface. Roll it into a tube.

Top with fresh cut fruit (strawberries, bananas . . .) and whipped cream.
