Happy 4th of July!

Do you know your United States

history? Here are some Fourth of July facts to ponder and share:

2.5 million: Number of people living in the 13 original colonies back in 1776. (Historical Statistics of the United States: Colonial Times to 1970)

30: Number of places in America with “liberty” in their names. Examples include Liberty, Missouri and North Liberty, Iowa.

$5.2 million: Amount of money to import American flags as of last count in 2004. Most of the flags are made in China.

50%: Amount of America’s potatoes grown in either Idaho or Washington.

Potatoes are common foods of July 4th celebrations, showing up in chips and salads.

• Three presidents died on July 4th: Thomas Jefferson and John Adams in 1826, and James Monroe, in 1831.

Calvin Coolidge was the only president born on July 4, in 1872.

• The Massachusetts General Court was the first state legislature to recognize July 4 as a state celebration, in 1781.

• The first recorded use of the name “Independence Day” occurred in 1791.

• The U.S. Congress established Independence Day as an unpaid holiday for federal employees in 1870. They changed it to a federal paid holiday in 1931.

• The Declaration of Independence was approved in a closed session of the Second Continental Congress on July 2, 1776, but most of the delegates didn’t sign it until August 2.

While John Adams expected Americans would celebrate July 2, the date on the publicized copies of the document was July 4, which became the day Americans commonly observed.

Reader enjoys Czech, family history articles

Melanie, Thank you for publishing the recent articles on Czech history and family history. If you haven’t received kudos for printing these items, you should.

I am referring to the articles about Lidice, the memorial to Heydrich’s assassins, and the young people who more recently spoke out against Nazi skinheads. Although violence, brutality, and hatred are the subject of these particular articles; they help us (Americans of Czech descent) understand what has happened in the Czech Republic since our ancestors emigrated.

On the lighter side, the articles pertaining to family history are entertaining and informative. The story of the man who accidentally found the portrait of his grandparents was heartwarming. And, the Ivicic family history could be that of almost any Czech-Texans.

The children’s story “Janko and the Giant” published last fall was another great item. I don’t know who enjoyed it more—my granddaughter or me.

Thanks again for making the Vestnik more than an instrument of lodge news.

NFCA Honors “Fraternalist-in-Action” for Volunteerism

Lodge 1, Fayetteville Member Debra Pflughaupt named Fraternal MVP

The National Fraternal Congress of America (NFCA) is proud to recognize Debra Lynn Pflughaupt, a member of SPJST Lodge 1, Fayetteville, as a Fraternal MVP (Most Valuable Participant) for the week of June 22, 2009. Fraternal MVPs are “Fraternalists-in-Action” who volunteer their time and energy to strengthen their communities through participation in local lodge activities and other charitable endeavors.

“The NFCA wishes to salute those individuals as true fraternalists,” said NFCA Chair of the Board Barbara A. Cheaney. “As a Fraternal MVP, Debra Pflughaupt embodies the heart of fraternalism through her hard work, dedication and generosity.”

Mrs. Pflughaupt has been a member of SPJST for five years. She serves her lodge as assistant youth leader where she takes care of all reports, provides creative ideas for member activities promoting the Czech culture, and purchases supplies for the concession stands.

Mrs. Pflughaupt coordinates workers for the concession stands and operates the one at the baseball field by herself. She helped with the renovation of the ball field and painted the top of the backstop. She assists the youth with ideas and instructions for Youth Achievement Day (YAD) projects. For the adult lodge, she cleans the hall, prepares food for the meetings, performs minor maintenance, and adds her special touch to the hall for special occasions.

Mrs. Pflughaupt is self-employed and spends much of her free time volunteering in the community. She seasonally decorates windows at the SPJST museum, opens the door to the public, and helps explain the history to visitors.

Mrs. Pflughaupt makes sure the city building is always decorated for the Christmas season. She assists the community by transporting people to various activities in the community, coordinates JOIN HANDS DAY and Make A Difference Day projects for youth and adults, and does her share of highway clean-up. Mrs. Pflughaupt’s motto is to do it right and correct the first

time, then there will be plenty of time left for other things.

Mrs. Pflughaupt fits in whether it is coloring with the youth club members or visiting with the eldest member in the crowd. She promotes JOIN HANDS DAY participation. She realizes by using those earmarked days to come together as one, it is also an opportunity to celebrate the union of generations and gain knowledge from both the young and old. Mrs. Pflughaupt takes advantage of joining parents, children and grandparents in projects, which benefit the members and the community.

Her unselfishness to the members and the community in the past year has been much appreciated by the community.

Fraternal MVPs are part of the NFCA’s Fraternalists-inAction program, which recognizes individuals whose unique stories best represent 21st Century fraternalism.

These fraternalists demonstrate exceptional compassion and vision through their volunteer activities.

American means pertaining to the inhabitants of the United States of America. The word heritage is defined as something that is passed down from preceding generations or traditions—something continuous.

When one puts these two words together, a wonderful story is told.

American heritage is basically what one does in the USA. Some examples are the holidays that are celebrated, what foods are eaten, and what is done for fun. These things did not just pop up in a day. These things started many, many years ago when the country’s rules were being made, the first president was elected, and also as inventions were created.

In June of 1776, Thomas Jefferson prepared the Declaration of Independence, in order to get away from Britain’s rule. He knew our country needed freedom. To have religious, social, political, and economic freedom from Britain was necessary, for all men to be equal.

Also around this time, another important document was prepared, the Constitution. The first ten amendments of the Constitution are called the Bill of Rights. Some freedoms which are guaranteed are religion, press, and expression. The Constitution spells out the rights and rules of our people.

Over the years, as the people uphold the rules of the country, they are creating new traditions. Emigrants from other countries come to the USA every day. With them, they bring their culture and customs.

Therefore, American heritage evolves continuously as time passes.

There are many parts to American heritage, and this is only a brief discussion. American heritage is definitely something to celebrate. When the words American and heritage are put together, then the interesting, evolving, wonderful story can be told.

District News District Seven sets September 26 bowling tournament in Seguin

Attention all SPJST Bowlers and Fans!

Make plans to attend the District Seven Bowling Tournament on Saturday, September 26, 2009, beginning at 12 noon. Come join in the fun and excitement! Cheer on your lodge team as they compete for prizes while raising money for the SPJST Education and Nature Center at Cooper Farm in Waldeck, Texas. All proceeds benefit SPJST ENC. The tournament will be held at SportsWest Bowling Center, located at 308 State Highway 46 South in Seguin, Texas, and is open to members and nonmembers.

Activities include a silent auction, and the snack bar opens at noon and features a large menu of items that are priced reasonably.

Pre-registration is encouraged.

Tournament Guidelines 1. Must be a member, at least six years of age, in good standing. Tournament is open to all SPJST members and nonmembers.

2. There will be three divisions in which to bowl. Pee Wee – Ages 6 to 12; Junior – ages 13 to 15; and adults – ages 16 and over.

3. Teams will consist of four bowlers— any combination of men and women.

Please note that individual entries will be accepted. You do not need a full team in order to enter the tournament.

Individual entries will be placed on a team. Lodges are encouraged to enter multiple teams.

4. Winners will be determined at the close of the third game. The bowling center computer will calculate a handi-

cap (80 percent of 200) to determine an average for the three games bowled.

This will put each bowler on an equal basis.

5. Each participant will bowl three games.

6. Awards will be presented to the top three males and top three females for high series and high game in each division.

7. Cost will be $20 per person, or $60 for a team of four.

8. Registration will begin at 11 a.m. with the tournament starting at 12 noon.

9. Walk-ins will be accepted from 11 to 11:30 a.m. on the day of the tournament, provided lanes are available.

10. Teams will be assigned starting lane number at time of check-in.

Family Day—August 30 Our annual Family Day on Sunday, August 30 was discussed. A noon meal of barbecue pork and sausage with the trimmings will be served with the same meal prices as last year. Members are kindly asked to bring desserts. Final plans will be made at the next meeting.

The youth club honored fathers by recognizing the oldest father present as Joe Siptak, and the youngest as James Vanek. Each received a gift.

The youth club also honored Christopher Vanek, a graduating senior from Sacred Heart Catholic School.

They had a decorated cake and presented him with a gift. Good luck, Chris, at Victoria College.

Lodge 25, Ennis meets July 9

SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis was called to order on June 11, 2009, by the president at 8 p.m. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited, and a moment of silence was held for departed members.

The minutes were read, and all other officers gave their reports.

Under new business, a wrestling match was discussed which will be held at the hall on July 18.

Show-and-tell of youth YAD projects and talents will be held before the meeting on July 9 at about 7:30 p.m., and the 50- and 75-year members will be recognized at this meeting.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:30 p.m.

Lodge 47, Seaton reports on June meeting

Dear Vestnik Readers, After a long, busy weekend, members of Lodge 47, Seaton continued to find their way back to Star Hall—three days in a row—to attend the lodge’s monthly meeting. With the picnic held the first Sunday in June, our meeting was changed to Monday, June 8.

President Edwin Pechal called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. The flags were presented by Edwin Vasicek and youth member Neil Rabroker. Members stood for a moment of silence for departed member Fred Symmank.

All officers, board members and active sales agents were present except Secretary/Sales Agent Patsy Koslovsky and board members Beth Rabroker, Tammy Pechal, and Crystal Morris. I was attending the mother lodge meeting at Lodge 24, Cyclone to discuss our upcoming District Two YAD which Cyclone will be hosting.

Lodge 80, Holland member receives $10,000 4-H Scholarship

On Friday, June 12, 2009, Victoria Pajestka was awarded a $10,000 Richard Wallrath Educational Foundation scholarship through the 4-H Opportunity Scholarship program. This scholarship program through 4-H is one of the largest of its kind. Victoria is pictured here with members of the Wallrath Educational Foundation as they presented her with her scholarship. An assembly was held at the Brazos County Exposition Complex in College Station for students receiving 4-H Foundation scholarships. There were more than 200 students receiving scholarships of various amounts from many donors in addition to the Wallrath Foundation. Victoria is a member of SPJST Lodge 80, Holland.

President Pechal thanked everyone who helped in any way before, during and after the picnic to make it a success. The tractor pull on Saturday had a very good attendance.

Vice President/FAC Frank Klinkovsky updated us on all upcoming activities, district and statewide.

The mid-year report of all fraternal acts performed is due on June 30. Please

turn your report in to Frank before this date. Frankie also gave a report on the picnic. Winners of the picnic raffle were: television—Pat Rabroker; glider—Christi Jungman; camera— Jerry Mikulas; Academy gift card— Beth Rabroker; and the Wal-Mart gift card—Ace Chlapek. Congratulations to each of you!

Treasurer Amanda Greger gave the treasurer’s report along with Ticket Chairman Ruth Kohutek, Bar Chairman David Pechal, and Kitchen Chairman Tammy Pechal giving their reports.

Youth Leader Lynette Talasek gave the youth report. She thanked all who helped with the kid’s games during the picnic. They had several new games this year which seemed to go over very well. Thank you to Pop-A-Lock for donating the bounce house and Rogers PTA for the use of the dunking booth.

The 2009-2010 officers were installed

by DYC Patsy Koslovsky. The youth are looking forward to their June social which will be held on June 27 at Austin’s Park ‘n Pizza.

Woodrow Marek stated the next audit of all books will be held on July 10.

The change in the rules and regulations regarding the margarita machine did not pass by two-thirds majority.

The June 2009 meeting of Lodge 81, Needville was held on Sunday, the 14th. At 12 noon, President Vincent Newman said a prayer of thanks, and we all enjoyed a hot dog lunch was served along with chips and numerous desserts. Thanks to Darlene Blinka and her kitchen committee for getting everything set up for us. Also, thanks to everyone who brought all of the delicious side dishes and desserts.

Lodge 92 Fort Worth presents June 14 meeting highlights

A plaque prepared by the SPJST Home Office was presented to Albert Kubala for his 55 plus years of service as hall manager, sales agent, lodge president, and trustee. The members expressed their gratitude for Albert’s many years of service.

Trustee Chairman John Paprskar asked for suggestions on how to make our 65 plus dances we hold each year more successful.

Thanks to all adults and youth who participated in the Join Hands Day hall clean-up project.

Thanks also to the Rules and Regulations Committee consisting of Chairman Joe Kozel, Kenneth Krivanek, and Sherrie Watkins for their work in presenting the needed revisions to the lodge rules and regulations. The regulations have been approved, and the final version will be distributed at the next meeting.

The 2010 100th Anniversary Committee was named. The committee members are Chairman Al Kercho, Mary Ann Krivanek, Mary C. Krivanek, Gayle Krengel, Joe Kozel, Bill McClendon, and Jan Taborsky. We will hold our first planning meeting on June 22. Our 100th Anniversary celebration will be on Saturday, September 18, 2010.

Associate Sales Agent Ricky Weyand gave a brief report on sales for the lodge.

Lodge 191, Lufkin meets Tuesday, July 7

The Lodge 191, Lufkin business meeting is Tuesday, July 7 at 7 p.m. at the SPJST lodge. We encourage our members to attend.

All business meetings are held on the first Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. Remember this date if you would like to attend the meetings.

Reminder Our dance on July 18 will be our anniversary dance. Members get in free of charge, and guests will pay $5.

The lodge will provide ham while our members bring finger foods. Food table will be ready at 7:30 p.m., and dancing is from 8 to 11 p.m. with music provided by Glenn Lenderman.

Our lodge will present an SPJST Scholarship to Allen Arrington, grandson of Ed and Linda Mount, who is attending McLennan Community College in Waco.

There may be months you don’t get a lodge newsletter especially when we don’t have anything to report. With the cost of postage, we try to cut our expenses as much as possible. Lodge 202 Jourdanton collects school supplies

Lodge 202, Jourdanton will again sponsor the “Stuff the Bus” project for the less fortunate students of the county. Members are asked to bring school supplies to the District Seven Youth Achievement Day on Sunday, July 12, 2009, at the VFW Hall in Poteet. Time to set up will be 9 a.m.

Ennis Sewing Circle met on June 11, 2009. The quilters arrived around 8 a.m. We stretched Dorothy Prachyl’s quilt, a very pretty one, and arranged tables and chairs. Thank you, everyone, who came early to help and to all the quilters.

We quilted until lunch time, and others arrived. Dorothy Prachyl led us in prayer, and we had a delicious lunch as always. I always wonder if we will have enough meat, veggies, or dessert.

We always have more than enough.

Thank you to Dorothy Valek, Geraldine Valek, Dorothy Kudrna, Libbie Vrla, and Sadie Kubin for the cleanup.

President Sadie called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all. A moment of silence was held for one of our dear members Esther Cunningham—she passed away suddenly and will be greatly missed; for Mary Zhanel, sister to Bessie Laznovsky and Charlie Haba, cousin to Martha Ritchey; and also for past member Elizabeth Machovsky.

We had 16 members and two guests Joe Ehrenberger and Dolores Mazany.

Dorothy Kudrna read the minutes, and Lil Kosarek gave the treasurer’s report. A minor correction was made to our minutes.

A sympathy card was signed for Robert Cunningham; a birthday card for Sylvia Laznovsky; and a thinking of you card for Sylvia, also.

June birthday celebrants were announced—Mildred Krajca, Marie Vrla, Lil Laznovsky, and Sylvia Laznovsky. None were present, but we did sing an early “Happy Birthday” to Dorothy Valek as she won’t be with us next month. I will write the following month where she went, and who all

by Libbie Vrla, seconded by Dorothy Valek, that we make a donation to the Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center, Temple in memory of Esther Cunningham. It was voted by all.

Dorothy Prachyl thanked everyone who quilted on her quilt which is a very pretty one.

Joyce Ehrenberger introduced her guest Dolores Mazany and told a story

of how they met and have been BFF best friends forever. Dolores and her husband Bob were Cleveland, Ohio, Sokols. They moved to Dallas and, of course, they were Dallas Sokols. Joyce and Joe were - and still are - Dallas Sokols. Dolores and Bob moved a couple of houses from Joyce and Joe, and Dolores babysat for Joyce. She was a nurse. Dolores now lives in Florida. Every summer, she visits in Dallas for several weeks then goes to Chicago and visits with her son then on to Canada to visit her daughter.

What a wonderful summer she has every year, and she is a delightful person. I hope she can make it again next year.

We discussed our elephant sale and show-and-tell for our July meeting.

We will meet at 10 a.m. Our elephant sale will start at 11 a.m.; lunch at 12 noon. Please bring your sale items priced and if not sold, take them back.

We have no room to keep them. Members, please bring your show-and-tell items. We had many nice items and stories last year. Do it again. We will not have a door prize or little gift ex-

Libbie Vrla talked about her and Lil’s trip to Caldwell to the Texas Czech Genealogical Society meeting.

She met and talked with Betty Kulhanek Scheider originally from Ennis.

Betty went to St. John Catholic School in Ennis with Irene Prachyl, our new member. Libbie showed a Texas Czech Genealogical Society magazine with an article and pictures of her and her husband’s trip to the Czech Republic. Irene and I did not get to read it all. Please bring it again, Libbie.

Our door prize was brought by Josephine Kubin and won by Dorothy Valek. I must apologize again. Last month, I wrote that Geraldine Valek won the door prize, but it was Josephine. Libbie handed out the little gifts.

Ella Mae, thank you for the lovely letter telling us about Esther Cunningham’s funeral service that she and husband Jerry attended. It sounded beautiful and glad you could make it.

Jean Sparkman, and Margaret Laymance who haven’t been to a meeting in long while. It’s always nice to see new faces along with our regular nice people.

The minutes of our May meeting were accepted as read. Pauline Morbitzer gave the treasurer’s report and a report on the cards she sent to our recovering members.

Lois Smith gave a report on Alice Barnes’ recovery and said she would welcome phone calls and visits now.

As promised, Mary Ann Kozel and I showed the anniversary quilt because many of our new members had not seen it.

Mary Ann Kozel gave a report on The Tyler Rose Festival. The festival is October 8 and 9 this year. She reported it is free to view the roses but the museum cost is $3.50 per person.

Mary Ann made the motion that we go October 13 on our meeting day. Lucy Martinez seconded it. The members that plan to go voted for. We will carpool from the hall. It was also suggested we help pay for gas for the drivers.

We had some great entertainment.

The three Zalasak sisters—Betty Loyd, Pauline Morbitzer and Wilma Perry—sang a parody of a song that was sung by Julie Andrews on her 60th birthday. The song was from “Sound of Music” with varied words fitting older people. It was great!

Door prizes were won by Shirley Martin, Lucy Martinez (she let Helen Kubala choose because it was her birthday), Theretta Praslicka, Kathy Ormsbee, Willie Mae Becan, and Corina Cranfill. We then had show-andtell.

Sherrie Watkins surprised Helen Kubala with a pretty birthday cake with a lot of glowing candles. After making a wish, she blew out the candles. We all shared the strawberry cake. She never would tell her age.

Besides Helen, we had Garland Ellsworth, Frankie Tesar, Robyn Brownlee, Lisa Ellsworth, and Emily Akins also celebrating birthdays.

A Red, White and Blue Treat

Fourth of July celebrations usually include a mix of summer activities, from swimming at the beach to taking in the requisite fireworks. All these activities are of course accompanied by food. In the spirit of the holiday, serve up something red, white and blue . . . or perhaps blueberry. Guests will savor this “Red, White and Blueberry Cheesecake Pie,” courtesy of the U.S. Highbush Blueberry Council.

Red, White and Blue Cheesecake Pie

Makes 8 to 10 portions.

8 sheets (about 13 by 14 inches each) thawed frozen phyllo dough

1/4 cup butter or margarine, melted

2 packages (8 ounces each) cream cheese 1/2 cup sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

2 eggs

2 cups fresh blueberries, divided

1/2 cup strawberry jelly

1 cup whipped heavy cream or nondairy whipped topping

Preheat oven to 425 F. For crust: Grease a 9-inch pie plate; set aside. On a flat surface, place one sheet phyllo (keep remaining phyllo covered to prevent drying out); brush with butter. Top with another phyllo sheet; brush with butter. Repeat with remaining phyllo and butter to make eight layers. Using kitchen scissors, cut layers into a 12- to 13-inch circle.

Carefully press circle into prepared pie plate; gently fan edges. Bake until edges are just golden, six to eight minutes; cool slightly on a wire rack. Reduce heat to 350 F. For filling: In a medium bowl with an electric mixer, beat cream cheese, sugar and vanilla until light and fluffy.

Add eggs; beat until well combined.

Fold in 1 cup of the blueberries. Pour into prepared crust.

Bake until set, 40 to 50 minutes. To prevent over-browning of crust, gently cover with foil the last 25 minutes

of baking; cool completely on rack.

To serve: In a small bowl, beat jelly until smooth. Spread over cheese filling. Arrange remaining blueberries on top in star shape. Garnish with whipped cream, if desired.

In Memory of Angeline Heitzman

Angeline Agnes Heitzman, 75, of Tioga passed away Sunday, May 17, 2009, in Denton.

She was born on January 22, 1934, in Ennis to Frank and Rosie (Novy) Patak. She married William “Bill” Heitzman on October 23, 1954, in Ennis.

He preceded her in death.

She was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Angeline Heitzman Catholic Church.

She was a member of the Altar Society and Golden Age group at St. Thomas Aquinas. She was also a member of SPJST Lodge 5, Pilot Point-Tioga; RVOS Lodge 103; KJTZ Society 108; and RSVP. Rosary and visitation were Wednesday, May 20 at 7 p.m. at Huff/Slay Funeral Home. Mass of Christian burial was celebrated on Thursday, May 21 at 11:30 a.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Pilot Point, with Monsignor Leon Duesman officiating. Burial followed at St. Thomas Aquinas Cemetery.

She is survived by son Brian Heitzman and wife Cheryl of Pilot Point; daughter Karen Prescher and husband Bobby of Aubrey; and son Kristofer Kardum and wife Kailey of Pilot Point; grandchildren Madeline Prescher, Nathan Heitzman, and Brianna Heitzman; brother Frankie Patak and wife Virginia of Ennis; and sisters Rosie Zhanel and Adell Miklis of Ennis and Mildred Podrouzek and husband Frank of Dallas; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

We, the members of the Resolution Committee of Lodge Slavonic Linden, No. 66, Waco, Texas, on behalf of our membership, wish to express our deepest and sincerest sympathy to the family of our departed brother, ALTON TADLOCK, of Waco, Texas, who died May 31, 2009, at the age of 85. Rosary was recited at 6 p.m.

Tuesday, June 2 at Waco Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Father David Leibham. Mass of Christian burial was held Wednesday, June 3 at St. Alton Tadlock Louis Catholic Church with Monsignor Mark Deering officiating. Burial took place at Waco Memorial Park.

Brother Alton was born March 2, 1924, to Robert Lee and Odie Blaylock Tadlock. He joined the Navy in 1942, and received the Bronze Star, World War II Veteran. He married the love of his life Irene Poehls on August 25, 1945, and had almost 64 years together.

Brother Alton was a member of Lodge 66 since July 1965.

Brother Alton was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Winnefred, Robert Lee and Avon Tadlock; and sons Kenneth and Keith Tadlock.

Survivors include his wife Irene Tadlock; children Kyle and Kerry Tadlock, and Kathy Guess (Tadlock); grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.

We, the members of the Resolution Committee of Lodge Slavonic Linden, No. 66, Waco, Texas, on behalf of our membership, wish to express our deepest and sincerest sympathy to the family of our departed brother, RAY SUPAK, of China Spring, Texas, who died Sunday, May 17, 2009, at the age of 61.

Rosary service was held Friday, May 22 at 7 p.m. at Grace Gardens Funeral Home Chapel and mass of Christian burial Ray Supak was held Saturday, May 23 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Bellmead with Father Ed Karasek as celebrant. Following the church service. Burial took place at 1 p.m. at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church Cemetery in Frenstat, Texas.

Brother Ray was born in Bryan, Texas, to William L. and Rosie Charanza Supak. He graduated from Connally High School in 1965 and served in the United States Air Force. Ray married Rose Marie Riley on March 27, 1971. He worked for Waco VA Medical Center as the textile care manager. He was a member of the China Spring Lions Club for 25 years and held various offices, Laundry and Linen College. American Legion in West, and an SPJST member since January 1980.

Ray enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing, and woodworking.

Ray was preceded in death by his parents; twin brother Roy Supak; and sister Rosalie Veselka.

Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Rose Marie Supak of China Spring; daughter Tiffany Supak of Hewitt; brother William Supak, Jr. of West; and sister Marinell Gaas of Caldwell.

We, the members of the Resolution Committee of Lodge Slavonic Linden, No. 66, Waco, Texas, on behalf of our membership, wish to express our deepest and sincerest sympathy to the family of our departed brother, GARY LYNN MOORE, of Axtell, Texas, who died Saturday, June 6, 2009, at the age of 61.

Services were at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, June 10 at Axtell Baptist Church with Reverend Paul Briggs officiating.

Burial followed at Axtell Cemetery.

Brother Gary was born May 23, 1948, in Waco, Gary Moore Texas, to James Moore and Frances B. Moore. He was a longtime employee of the Waco VA and retired after 31 years of service.

Brother Gary was a member of Axtell Baptist Church and an SPJST member since January 1961.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son Danny Joe Moore; and loving wife Juliana Olsen-Moore.

Survivors include sons Jason Ray Moore and wife Renee of Riesel, and Daniel Lee Moore of Waco; brother Dennis Moore of Axtell; grandchildren, Austin Ray Moore of Riesel and Dani Jo Moore of Rosenberg, Texas; and many family and friends.

Woodmen of the World’s campsite is located on Lake Brownwood. There is a very nice trail leading from the cabins to the lake which has a roped off area for swimming and a dock to fish from. SPJST Education and Nature Center District One Director Ronnie Pflughaupt and John Hoelscher will bring the two boats which have

been purchased for the ENC. Each group will have scheduled time for boat rides, water tubing, water skiing, canoeing, and paddle boating. Life jackets will be provided by the camp.

For those of you who have your own life jacket and feel more comfortable using it, please bring it marked with your name. There will be a certified lifeguard on each boat along with lifeguards in the swimming area and the lake. No camper or LIT will be allowed at the lake without supervision of an adult chaperone. Along with the camp form is a form to be signed and initialed by a parent giving your camper permission to participate in water activities.

Katelyn is the grand prize winner of the 2009 SPJST Czech Easter Egg (Kraslice) Decorating Contest, and Melinda is the 2009 SPJST Flag Day Essay Contest winner. Both girls were recognized at District Three Youth Achievement Day on Saturday, June 20 at Lodge 84, Dallas.

Lodge 17, New Tabor welcomes Macy Narro, age five, to the youth club. She is the daughter of Ralph and Holly Narro, and she has a brother, Dillon.

Macy enjoys ballet and tap dancing, cheer power, tumbling, and swimming.

She will be a kindergarten student at Caldwell Elementary in the fall.

The water sports will be a big part of our camp this year. Of course, there will be a lot of the fun things we have had in the past: a scavenger hunt, volleyball, swimming in the small pool provided at the campsite, slip-andslide, games, songs, dancing, karaoke, a rifle range, horseshoes, washer pitching, and the good ole fun of just hanging out with friends. As usual, when noon arrives on Wednesday, we will realize we did not have time to do all that was planned.

very hard getting together a fantastic evening event which I know will be a lot of fun. Our theme this year is “The Wild West.” On Monday evening we will have a “rodeo” with everything from “milking the cow,” “branding livestock,” panning for “gold” along with many more events. It is a night the campers will not want to miss. So bring along your boots, cowboy hats, and your western attire and be ready for a boot scootin’ good time.

On Tuesday afternoon, we plan to leave the campsite and go to Brown-

wood’s city park. We will have activities at the park, playing on the slide and swings, and maybe have a good basketball game. We will have a light meal. Then, we will head to the Brownwood Country Club to enjoy an evening of swimming. Transportation will be provided by chaperones.

The cabins are rather small with bunk beds and air conditioning; air conditioning two years in a row, we are really steppin’ up! The showers and restrooms are outside of the cabins.

SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis Youth Club had its meeting on June 6, 2009, at Youth Leader Betty Macalik’s house. We had a super time. We went swimming in her pool. Dillon Baker and Rachel Clark are graduating this year, so we celebrated with a cake. We gave them a gift.

Pravidelná schůze u řádu Jaromír ve Westu, Tx. se vydařila.

Pravidelná čtvrtletní schůze u řádu Jaromír ve Westu ve státě Texasu se konala dne 5. června 2009 v naší síni a těšili jsme se, že oslavíme 50. výročí několika členek a členů a dvě osoby by měly dostat odznak 75 let členství u jednoty, avšak sestra Margaret Šulák zemřela dne 23. března 2009 a bratr George Mikeska z Abbottu, Tx. nebyl přítomen.

President Wilburn Willis uvítal přítomné členstvo v poměrně hojném počtu, složili jsme přísahu americké vlajce a uctili památku zesnulých členů a členek. Tajemnice Jana Vaculík přečetla zprávu z minulé schůze a byla přijata tak, jak byla čtena. Finanční tajemnice Mary Lou Mynář podala podrobnou zprávu o našich financích a její zpráva byla schválena tak, jak byla čtena. President Willis zdůraznil, že máme platit již jen poměrně malou částku dluhu, který

Jana Vaculík jako asistentka vedoucí Klubu mládeže oznámila, že v dubnu soutěžili ve vybarvování kraslic a vyhráli několik cen.

Vicepresident Freddie Kaluža oznámil, že věnujeme od řádu 100 dolarů na podporu mladých tanečníků ze střední školy jako příspěvek na cestovní výdaje a hrazení zájezdu do Evropy a staré vlasti. Členové a členky Klubu mladých tanečníků sbírají příspěvky po celém Westu a okolí a chtějí poznat starou vlast, odkud pochází předci mnohých členů a členek klubu. Jsme rádi, že klub

President Willis předal odznaky 50 let členství u jednoty Christine Grellhesl, Doris Jane Hutyra, Sherry Ann Matušek a Kennethovi Dale Taylorovi. Pak přivítal srdečně na naší schůzi sestru Maxine Šefčík, která se pomalu uzdravuje a zajímá o práci u našeho řádu a v naší jednotě. Přejeme jí důkladné uzdravení a návrat k činnosti u našeho řádu. Bylo oznámeno, že Joe Bartoň byl rovněž velmi nemocen, prodělal operaci všech čtyř srdečních tepen a nyní se uzdravuje v Domově důchodců ve Westu, Tx. Příští schůze bude se konat druhý pátek v září a to je 11. září roku 2009.

Czech American TV broadcasts first live show

Dear Friends of Czech Heritage, Czech American TV wants to inform you about the first CATV Live show which was broadcasted on Friday, June 12, 2009, at 8 p.m. on www.catvusa.com, which is CATV Live page. In the last several days, hundreds of emails and calls were made about how great the show was, and it will be a good way to promote the Czech culture across the United States.

The first broadcast featured an interview of 2006 Miss Czech Slovak US Queen Sarah Middlebrook and her wonderful experience representing the United States. Also, featured was the Charles Nemec Polka Band from West, Texas, along with Kathy Podsednik, director of the Miss Texas Czech Slovak pageant. At the conclusion of the broadcast, a calendar of events was presented which included upcoming festivals and activities in the state of Texas.

Czech American TV special reporter Jana Vaculik is able to travel to other festivals, activities, and conduct interviews with people. Czech American TV is a nonprofit organization, and its reporters are volunteers. Jana is one of them, and she will try to make it to various events, but will not always be able due to expenses and her free time.

Also, some viewers asked why CATV Live from Texas is broadcast once a month, regular day and time and is not archived. Czech American TV broadcasts a regular weekly show which is found on its website www.catvusa.com under Latest Broadcast and after that, it is moved to the archive. The website archive has over 1,000 hours of videos related to Czech heritage and could be replayed at any time. CATV Live show is a show which broadcasts live only at a certain time much like an evening news broadcast. Go to Czech-American TV website at www.catvusa.com and click on the CATV Live button on the right side.

In the near future, there is an opportunity to watch the Texas Czech Shows in a rebroadcast, and some of those CATV shows might be shown on the Czech American TV weekly broadcast.

We are planning to expand the CATV LIVE feature, but we are depended on future financial support from donations and sponsors.

As we mentioned before, Czech American TV CATV Live Show it is a great opportunity for other organizations and volunteers in the Czech American community in the United States to promote their local activities not just in Texas. We are available to answer questions and work with organizations to develop their own shows.

The Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange, Texas, received several special visitors on Friday, June 5. Special Envoy from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Czechs Living Abroad Vladimir Eisenbruk and Czech Embassy Counselor Nora Jurkovicova stopped by the Center to check on the construction progress of the new library museum and archives that is nearing completion on the site of the TCHCC. A reception was held for the visitors and was attended by the TCHCC board members and many of the faithful volunteers who help keep the center running.

Along with the volunteers, County Judge Ed Janecka, Sanford and Mannie Schmid, Don and Betty Chovanec

and Father Stephen Nesrsta were on hand to welcome the visitors to La Grange. Honorary Czech Consul General Ray Snokhous and wife Clarice, presented Vladimir Eisenbruk with a Texas cowboy hat. Isenbruk and Jurkovicova thanked everyone for so warmly welcoming them to Texas.

TCHCC President Retta Chandler welcomed them as well and distributed Texas-related gifts. Mrs. Jurkovicova commented that Texas-Czechs have made her much more aware of her nationality and made her “very proud to be Czech.”

The center will be open to the public in July with a Grand Opening Ceremony and Muziky set for October 10.

For West, Texas, resident Jana Vaculik, this Friday (June 12) will most likely go down as a memorable one as she hosts a live Internet broadcast about Texas culture. This hour-long show is to be streamed live over the Internet from 8 to 9 p.m. this Friday via the Czech American TV (CATV) website www.catvusa.com. It will be a first broadcast under this format aired on the CATV website, with the Texas Czech show scheduled for the same time slot every second Friday of each month.

Jana, a 2000 West High School graduate who has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Czech Studies from the University of Texas in Austin, said the idea for the show is that of John Honner, who started Czech American TV six years ago. Honner, who is originally from Brno in the Czech Republic, began his career working as an investigative reporter for Czech newspapers and as a television cameraman and TV engineer in the Czech Republic. Honner’s show is televised weekly on the public access channel in Chicago, Illinois, to an area which serves several million viewers. Then the program is made available on the CATV website and attracts approximately 90,000 visits a month, mostly from the United States. “Our show will be a part of a new format of live shows over the Internet with volunteer hosts and reporters featured on Czech American TV which broadcasts only in the English language. The Texas Czech Show is the first under this format with future plans for others in Nebraska, Missouri and Arizona,” Vaculik explained. “It is John’s idea to reach as many Czechs as possible. Since he couldn’t bring a professional TV crew to all the locations (across the nation) to do the stories, he decided to have volunteers bring the stories over the Internet.” “He saw my videos on YouTube and thought I had some talent,” she explained. “We talked and exchanged emails. I told him what I would like to do, and it’s kind of gone from there.” She told the McLennan-Hill Chapter of the Czech Heritage Society of the Internet-based show, and this past April presented the idea at the Czech Heritage Society’s

state meeting. “This is a great project to reach people of all ages and also to tell others around the world about the Czech-related activities across Texas,” Vaculik said. Originally, the show was to be under a 30-minute format, but it has blossomed to an hour. “I was afraid I wouldn’t have enough for 30 minutes,” but with taping Friday’s show completed, it is now 60 minutes long. Jana, who currently has a job in retail, hopes to one day travel to the Czech Republic and teach English there. She is fluent in the Czech language as her parents, Jan and Marcela Vaculik, both were born in the former Czechoslovakia and “taught me about

the language and culture. I feel quite fortunate and enjoy speaking to groups about my heritage.” Her grandmother, Ludmila Vaculik (known as Lidka to many area residents) has also aided Jana in her knowledge of the Czech Republic. She is assistant youth leader for SPJST Lodge 54, West and has worked at Westfest helping in the McLennan-Hill Czech Heritage Society’s genealogy booth and the Parade of Costumes at the annual festival in West. As the 2001 Texas representative in the Miss Czech-Slovak USA Queen Pageant in Wilbur, Nebraska, Friday’s first show will reflect this part of her life. This first show will feature

West resident Sarah Middlebrook, the 2006 Miss Czech-Slovak USA Queen and West resident Kathy Podsednik, director for the Texas Miss Czech-Slovak Queen Pageant. The show is to also include a segment on West resident Charles Nemec and his band. “The first show will be showcasing West people and the City of West,” the 27-year-old Vaculik said. In the future, plans are for segments on the Sokol Slet parade in Fort Worth, the Taylor Czech Chorus, Youth Day in La Grange, and an Immigration Exhibit at the Bob Bullock Museum in Austin. “Every month will be something different. Anyone with an idea for a Czech-related story is invited to contact me. I hope to have a calendar of events for Czech festivals, and dances in the state. I would also like to do theme shows, such as Czech cooking. It just depends on how it works. I hope to show Texas Czech culture around the world.”

“I need help from members of all Czech organizations,” Vaculik said while adding she needs help with “brainstorming for ideas, people to interview, and information about events which I can come to and produce a segment for this monthly Internet show.

Kitty cat the stunner SoundCzech

Welcome to an edition of SoundCzech – Radio

Prague’s language course where we help you learn new Czech phrases through the language of music.

This week’s song is “Dokonalá kost” – “a perfect stunner”, by the Nahoru po schodišti dolů band. The word to be on the look out for is kočička, or kitty cat.

“You’re the perfect bone, little kitty, but one year with you was long enough”, sings Martin Krajíček of the Nahoru po schodišti dolů band. I adore literal translation. The kočička or kitty cat to whom the singer’s song is sung is obviously a girlfriend, who he commends as “the perfect bone” – dokonalá kost – a right stunner, a real peach, a hot chick, or what Jimi Hendrix’s contemporaries would have called a fox. Why a bone? I have no idea. But animal references to people in Czech can come in droves, and kočka, cat, or its diminutive kočička is one of the more common since it refers to an attractive female. And of course, if you’re speaking directly to the cat, kočička, then she becomes kočičko, as in the song.

While feline reference to a woman will win you kudos in Czech, be warned that addressing her as any

kind of poultry, such as a hen - slepice, or goose - husa - will have the exact opposite effect! In fact, most animal references to people in Czech are not intended in a friendly way, and I suppose that’s to be expected.

Foremost of course is the ubiquitous vůl, which means ox, and is used by some in utter informality as an interjection between every other word. A person responsible for some frustrating act of wanton stupidity, however, will likely be referred to as tele, a calf, or osel, a donkey. Mezek - mule, or beran - ram, is reserved for those who are overly stubborn, or “pigheaded”. And speaking of pigs, it will come as no surprise that someone who is dirty – in thought or deed – is a pig, or prase, unless he is an endearing, little pig - prasátko.

Czech Republic Sokol Gymnasts Visit Czech Heritage Museum Monday, June 22, 2009 • Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center in Temple

On Monday, June 22, 2009, Sokol gymnasts from the Czech Republic visited the SPJST Home Office and Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center in Temple, Texas. The gymnasts arrived in Houston, Texas, on Friday, June 12 and visited several towns throughout the week including Houston, Galveston, La Grange, Flatonia, Praha, Yoakum, Goliad, Corpus Christi, Padre Island, Kingsville, San Antonio, Austin, Georgetown, Temple, West, and Dallas/Fort Worth.

They also visited NASA Space Center, Shiner Brewery, King Ranch, The Alamo, Riverwalk, State Capitol, Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum, Mount Bonnell, and Congress Avenue

Bridge Bats, among other places. They also attended church in Corn Hill.

The group was led by Marie Slamova, travel agent/guide/interpreter, of Brno, Czech Republic.

Their stop in Temple included a tour of the Czech Heritage Museum, located in the basement of the SPJST Home Office, and the newly renovated CHM, located across the street. Ms. Slamova presented several gifts for the museum to CHM Executive Director Sandi Wicker. The group then ate a hot dog and chili lunch in the museum. They also sang several Czech songs.

After they left Temple, the group headed to West then Fort Worth for the International Sport and Cul-

tural Festival. They also planned to tour several North Texas sites including South Fork Ranch.

“This is such a happy, fun loving group that enjoys singing,” bus driver Billy Davis of Agape Tours said. “They are a super, super group that is very friendly and courteous—I just love every one of them.” He added that the gymnasts are very appreciative of the Czech people in Texas who are proud of their Czech heritage. Mr. Davis, who is of English/Scottish/Cherokee Indian descent said he even learned a few Czech words during the trip like dobrý den!; ahoj; and děkuji.

experience in the interviewing process, as a communications major at UT prior to switching to Czech Studies, much of this has been a learning experience.

“I’m learning how to use my camcorder - which is not professional by any means - and to sit people for the proper lighting and for interviewing.”

The young West woman says she feels similar to a pioneer as she readies for Friday’s Internet broadcast. “This will be this station’s first live streaming. I feel like a trailblazer. Right now, I’m the only one who has bought the equipment and am ready to broadcast the first show.” Jana actually tapes the
