Bowling Brings Brothers, Families Together for Fraternal Fun

Liz the Bowling Wiz!
Congratulations to Liz Bielefeld of SPJST Lodge 107, Floresville. Liz received first place for women’s high game with a score of 204. She also received first place for women’s high series with a score of 554. Congratulations also to Jeff Bartek of Lodge 47, Seaton (second place men’s high series and second place men’s high game); Carolyn Pechacek of Lodge 88, Houston (third place women’s high series); and Doris Ford of Lodge 13, Dime Box (third place women’s high game).

International Sport and Cultural Festival™ June 23 to 28 in Fort Worth
The 2009 International Sport and Cultural Festival is here in Texas on Tuesday, June 23 through Sunday, June 28. Presented by the American Sokol, the festival will celebrate the Czech and Slovak heritage that SPJST and Sokol share. The festival will be held in Fort Worth, Texas. “This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for SPJST to strut its stuff to Czechs from other states,” Festival Chairman Rome Milan says. The festival is bringing participants together from 31 states and, at this time, 28 countries. Several groups from Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Serbia will be in Fort Worth to honor this occasion. “Let’s get excited and bring our SPJST lodge members to the 2009 International Sport and Cultural Festival,” Brother Milan, who is a member of SPJST Lodge 154, Fort Worth, says. SPJST lodges and members can participate in the festival parade down Fort Worth Main Street on Friday, June 26. Both of SPJST floats will attend the parade. “Let’s see if we can have 1,000 marchers in the parade,” Mr. Milan says. The festival is also looking for Czech folk dancers or music groups to perform on city stages (available all week). Lodges can also enter your the recreation coed volleyball tournament set for Wednesday, June 24.

On Thursday, June 25, lodges are invited to enter the celebrity golf tournament. On Friday, June 26, lodges and/or families are encouraged to enter the family bowling tournament. A fitness fun run/walk is scheduled for Wednesday, June 24. Qualified youth club members in SPJST’s District Three are encouraged to participate in Youth Achievement Day (YAD) on Saturday, June 27. Attendees are invited to visit the Czech Heritage, Sokol and Sport Museum to be displayed at the Fort Worth Convention Center (available all week). Individuals can enter Czech- or sport-related artwork for contest or display. On Thursday, June 25, a social is scheduled featuring Czech music. The VIP banquet is tentatively planned for Saturday, June 27. Lodges are invited to purchase vendor booths to sell items for a fundraiser. “The festival will provide opportunities to visit many, many other interesting activities at this spectacular event,” Mr. Milan adds. “This is the largest event of its kind ever held in Texas—Every SPJST member will want to be part of it!
