SPJST Introduces Heritage Plan: A Present for the Future The SPJST Insurance Department is proud to introduce a new product! It’s the SPJST Heritage Plan, and it’s a present for the future. The SPJST Heritage Plan is a whole life plan to age 100 with level lifetime premium payments. At the death of the insured (grandfather/ grandmother), a level annual payment will be paid to the beneficiary (grandchild). The death benefit amount is based on the amount of the benefit that the grandparent wishes to leave a grandchild as a legacy. The death benefit will be placed into an immediate annuity by SPJST where the benefit amount will be paid annually to the beneficiary on his/her birthday or another date selected by the grandpar-
ent for 20 years. If the birthday is selected, for example, the grandchild will receive a birthday card and the benefit amount each year for 20 years after the grandparent passes away. If the grandchild is under age 18, the payment will either be paid to a legal guardian if one is in place or can be held at interest until age 18. The minimum benefit amount is $333 annually to the beneficiary for 20 years with a minimum face amount of $5,000. The maximum benefit amount is $2,333 annually to the beneficiary with a maximum face amount of $35,000.

One of the fundamental principles that distinguishes the SPJST from other business forms is that the members — not outside investors — control the organization. Member control is exercised through elections of officers and directors on the local lodge district and state levels. Member control is further exercised through the convention which is held every four years. The next convention will be in June, 2008, in Killeen, Texas. It is during the convention that the SPJST By-Laws and proposed changes in the structure of our fraternal benefit society are considered. While members “own” and control SPJST, responsibility for making sure things run smoothly is delegated to a 12-member body, democratically elected at our quadrennial conventions. This group is collectively referred to as the SPJST Supreme Lodge and consist of five officers and seven district directors. Although not a member of the Supreme Lodge, the Vestnik Editor and Director of Communication is also elected statewide. At the July, 2007, meeting of the SPJST Supreme Lodge, longtime SPJST Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas indicated that he was planning to retire and would not be a candidate for re-election at the 2008 Convention. Since Brother Mikulas’ announcement, considerable interest has been expressed in identifying a replacement candidate(s) for the position. In the interest of identifying a
