When I Think Czech
When I think Czech I think about music an accordion going a trumpet, a tuba fast polkas and slow waltzes a crowded hall out in the country full of people shuffling their feet going round and round the dance floor parading past the band stand winking at the singer

When I think Czech I think about food serving trays on long tables piled high and deep with sausage and potato salad homemade bread and Kolaches just baked pitchers of iced sweet tea and urns of coffee people sitting at wooden benches talking as they eat When I think Czech I think friendliness and farming the two go hand in hand people close to the earth and the weather working hard helping each other proud of their place
and their straight rows and fences always ready to help to pitch in to get things done When I think Czech I think about laughter A sense of humor so native and natural spontaneous and sincere don’t get too serious always ready for a joke or a funny story gathered in garages or churches or down on main street telling stories and laughing at others and themselves When I think Czech I think about my ancestors and how they came over from the old country with little or nothing just courage and determination packed possessions in an old wooden trunk ready to start anew work hard and prosper becoming Texans, Americans, trying to learn English but still thinking in Czech! —SPJST—
