SPJST Awards Banquet set for February 9 in Killeen The 2008 SPJST Awards Banquet is planned for Saturday, February 9 at the Killeen Civic and Conference Center. The banquet was originally scheduled to be held in March in Temple; however, due to the February 9 date becoming available, the banquet will now be held in Killeen.

Tentative plans include a workshop for lodge officers and members to be held prior to the banquet. The banquet will honor and recognize 2007 Fraternalists of the Year, award winning lodges, sales agents, districts,

members, youth clubs, youth leaders, and youth members.

Dates for future SPJST Awards Banquets have also been booked at the Killeen Civic and Conference Center. They are February 21, 2009 and February 20, 2010.

Lodges, winning sales agents, and youth clubs will receive more information about the 2008 banquet in January. Watch the Vestnik for banquet information as it becomes available.

SPJST State Progressive 42 Domino Tournament January 12 The SPJST State Progressive 42 Domino Tournament is Saturday, January 12, 2008, at the SPJST Home Office, located at 520 North Main Street in Temple. Check-in begins at 8 a.m., and play begins at 9 a.m.

The tournament is open to SPJST members ages 16 and above. The $7 entry fee includes snacks and lunch.

SPJST records 5,280 applications written in Rhythm ’07 campaign The goal of the Rhythm ’07 membership drive of 2,777 has been met.

However, the campaign continues until December 31, 2007.

In conjunction with SPJST’s Rhythm ’07 program, local lodges were assigned application goals for the year. Each lodge goal was based largely on past performance and perceived potential.

The last column, “Youth Club

Application Count,” applies to those lodges with youth clubs and reflects applications written for members between the ages of 0 and 17 through June. “Youth Club” totals are applied toward the lodge’s total goal. The second column, “Lodge Incentive Count,” reflects the number of new certificates issued for the Lodge Recognition and Incentive Program.

SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Donors’ List SPJST’s 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive for 2007-2008 officially kicked off on October 1. There have been 221 donations made to date and total $3,270.52. SPJST Memorial donations to date are $1,806. Thank you for your generous donations to the SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive. Because of your generosity, many SPJST members will be able to attend or continue with higher learning.

The 2007-2008 SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive goal is $20,000.

Guidelines for Giving 1. Donations made by lodges out of lodge funds will be listed as a lodge donation.

2. Collected donations from a lodge meeting will be listed individually by member’s last name in alphabetical order. Individuals submitting a donation will also be listed by member’s last name alphabetically.

3. Gifts of $50 or more will be printed in bold.

4. Families or groups, which desire names, listed under a particular last name or group name should indicate this on the donation form or letter, otherwise, the names will be listed as individual donations by last name in alphabetical order.

5. 100 pennies donations made as a memorial will be listed under memorial donations in a separate listing.

SPJST Lo dge Se c t ion Lodge 1 Fayetteville elects 2008 officers SPJST Lodge 1, Fayetteville met Saturday, December 1, 2007, at the SPJST hall in Fayetteville. President Sharon Fritsch welcomed District One Director Donnie Victorick, his wife Janice, members, and guests.

She called the meeting to order and asked members to stand, leading them in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Members were asked to remain standing, and President Fritsch led the pledge to the Texas flag, paid tribute to the troops, and prayed for members and departed members.

Roll call of officers showed the president, vice president, secretary, treasurer/youth leader, assistant youth leader and three directors present.

The minutes of the October 8 meeting were read and approved with Treasurer Ronnie Pflughaupt providing the treasurer’s report.

Billy Wasut reported on the bookings of the SPJST hall which included dances, meetings, etc. in March and April.

Ronnie Pflughaupt stated that the youth club has been quite active selling concessions at volleyball and basketball games raising money for the baseball field, Mr. Gatti’s pizza, chartered bus to attend an Astros ballgame, four dances at the hall, and cleaning Ross Prairie Cemetery. The youth club will go caroling on December 19.

President Fritsch reported on the accomplishments of projects which included installing outside lights for the successful Lickskillet cook-off; adding a back porch to the kitchen area of the hall; updating breakers Cleve Friddell (labeling inside and outside); and adding new Czech signs welcoming everyone to the lodge hall. She recognized those who participated in the food drive for Project Amen, an interlocal project working with the city of Fayetteville to put in the new SPJST ballfield. President Fritsch thanked those who helped with the lodge-sponsored youth club fishing contest, Join Hands Day, and the membership booth at Lickskillet.

Thanks to those who welcomed the BP MS 150 bike tour to use the SPJST hall as a rest station for bathrooms and food.

Ronnie Pflughaupt reported two new SPJST members—Breann Beseda and Valerie Rowe. Debby Pflughaupt made a motion to accept the new members. The motion was seconded by Henry Guthmann. The motion carried.

Becky Vitek gave an update on screen doors for the kitchen. She suggesting using pine wood instead of cedar at a cost of $75. A motion was made for the new advertising sign to include an attachment posting dances, rental information, etc.

The election of officers and directors for the year 2008 was discussed, and a motion was made by Ronnie Pflughaupt and seconded by Wayne Peschel to keep the same slate. The motion carried to retain the following: President/FAC Sharon Fritsch Vice President Rose Rohde Secretary Irene Polansky Treasurer/Youth Leader Ronnie Pflughaupt Assistant Youth Leader Debby Pflughaupt Hall Manager Janice and Billy Wasut President Sharon Fritsch affirmed that Ronnie and Debby Pflughaupt will be the two delegates representing Lodge 1 at the 30th Convention in Killeen, Texas, in June, 2008.

President Fritsch recognized and thanked the SPJST youth for the food collected for Amen, United Women and Ministry to help the underprivileged. Debby Pflughaupt made a motion to donate to the Kanecka family who recently lost their home which was destroyed by a fire. Ruth Froebel seconded the motion. The motion carried.

Youth club and Rose Rohde made a motion to adjourn. The motion carried.

Lodge 6 Cottonwood members celebrate Christmas President Milton Peterson opened the meeting on December 2, 2007, with the Pledge of Allegiance, and the motto was led by the youth. A moment of silence was observed for the sick and deceased members of the lodge.

Sister Georgie Soukup reported there were 37 members present.

Sister Barbara Hykel read the minutes from the last meeting and also gave her FAC report. She reported that the SPJST Awards Banquet will be on March 15.

Sister Peggy Dobecka gave the treasurer’s report and the youth report. They took cakes to the rest home on November 7 and December 5. The youth club presented a short

program then Santa arrived and gave goodies to everyone. There was also an exchange of gifts. The youth club had a prize drawing for community service.

George Straten gave his hall report. The socials for December 7 and 21 were canceled due to the busy days before Christmas. We will have a New Year’s Eve party at the hall.

Everyone come out for lots of games and fun.

Sister Jerelene Lenart sent a get well card to Pattie Rosales and sympathy cards to Irene and Charlie Berber and Kim and Robert Seith.

Brother George Soukup presented the fraternalist of the year award to Raymond Marek. He was presented with a turkey and ham.

December birthdays were Pam Urbanovsky, Dorothy Firasek, Bobby Hykel, and Ernest Bezdek.

The progressive door prize was won by Milton Peterson. Attendance prizes were won by Jerry Hykel, Bobby Hykel, and Pam Urbanovsky.

A delicious meal of turkey, dressing, and all the trimmings was served to all.

Treasurer Mrnustik reported Rose Autry became a member of our lodge by transfer.

Youth Leader Dowell reported on the youth Christmas party. The youth met at the hall at 9 p.m. and held their December meeting. After the meeting, gifts were exchanged, and the hall was decorated for the memorial service. The youth then boarded vehicles and went to Gattitown in Bryan where they were joined by other lodges in District One. All had a good time.

FAC Holly Narro had not received her December report, but she did remind us of the SPJST Home Office Holiday Open House and Temple Christmas parade on December 3 and the 42 tournament on January 12 also at the Home Office.

Susan Skrabanek gave the hall report.

Under old business, we discussed the memorial service.

For new business, we discussed the fruit bags which will be packaged and delivered to the local nursing home on Tuesday, December 4. Susan showed us the new centerpiece and two poinsettias which were purchased for our memorial service.

Secretary Trcalek handed out

paperwork to our voting delegates.

Mr. Hildebrand made us aware of a painter who would be in the area soon and asked the members how we felt about having the outside of the hall repainted. It was mentioned that the rotten wood needed replacing first. A motion was made by Skrabanek and seconded by Dowell that if the rotten wood could be replaced before the painter left our area, then we would proceed with the building facelift.

Motion passed. Susan will look into finding a repair person and contact the painter.

District One Director Donnie Victorick introduced State FAC Chester Jenke. Mr. Jenke is in charge of the FACs for SPJST. He briefed us on a few of the date changes of upcoming events. He encouraged us to continue reading our Vestniks and pay close attention to changes to upcoming events.

With no further business, the meeting was adjourned.

Lodge 24, Cyclone plans New Year’s Eve celebration Plan to spend New Year’s Eve at SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone’s Flag Hall on Monday, December 31, 2007.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. with dancing to the music of Shilo Country featuring Lodge 24 member Terry Taylor from 8 p.m. to 12 midnight.

The kitchen and bar will be open.

Admission is $10 per person.

Children’s admission is $5 when accompanied by an adult. There is no charge for ages 10 years and under.

Lodge 17 New Tabor reports on December meeting The December meeting of Lodge 17, New Tabor was called to order by President Randy Gaas. Vice President Wilfred Hildebrand secured signatures of members in attendance. Ms. Narro led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Ben Trcalek read the resolution of sympathy for Lawrence A. Vavra.

Secretary Trcalek also called the roll of officers and read the minutes from the previous meeting. With no corrections to the minutes, they were approved as read. Under correspondence President Gaas read a cheerful Christmas card that we received from the SPJST Vestnik/Communication Department.

Lodge 40 El Campo-Hillje reports on December meeting President Sheldon Holub called the Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje meeting to order at 12:15 p.m. after a catered meal was served. Present were 61 members and 10 guests.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led

by Craig Cerny. A moment of silence was observed for the deceased members and ill in the community.

The installation of officers was conducted by Edmund Kana. All officers and trustees were present for the meeting.

A motion was made by J.C. Kocurek to accept the November minutes as printed in the Vestnik. The motion was seconded by Charlene Smith, and the motion passed.

Lodge 47, Seaton hosts annual tarok tournament Come join in on all the fun at the SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton’s annual tarok tournament. The tournament is set for Saturday, January 19, 2008, at Seaton Star Hall, located five miles east of Temple on Highway 53.

Registration is from 8 to 8:45 a.m.

The starting table will be drawn by the players prior to the tournament start.

Play begins at 9 a.m.

Entry fee is $20 per person which includes the noon meal and snacks.

SPJST, St. Joseph Catholic Church Collect Toys for Santa Pal

Thanks to Lodge 24, Cyclone President Daniel Wilde and wife Linda for delivering many toys to the SPJST Home Office last week. The toys were collected by the religious education group at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Cyclone where Linda serves as group director.

The toys will be donated to Santa Pal.

Each December, I vowed to make Christmas a calm and peaceful experience. I had cut back on nonessential obligations—extensive card writing, endless baking, decorating, and even overspending.

Yet still, I found myself exhausted, unable to appreciate the precious family moments, and of course, the true meaning of Christmas.

My son, Nicholas, was in kindergarten that year. It was an exciting season for a six year old.

For weeks, he’d been memorizing songs for his school’s winter pageant. I didn’t have the heart to tell him I’d be working the night of the production. Unwilling to miss his shining moment, I spoke with his teacher. She assured me there’d be a dress rehearsal the morning of the presentation.

All parents unable to attend that evening were welcome to come then. Fortunately, Nicholas seemed happy with the compromise. So, the morning of the dress rehearsal, I filed in 10 minutes early, found a spot on the cafeteria floor and sat down. Around the room, I saw several other parents quietly scampering to their seats. As I waited, the students were led into the room.

Each class, accompanied by its teacher, sat cross-legged on the floor. Then, each group, one by one, rose to perform their song.

Because the public school system had long stopped referring to the holiday as “Christmas,” I didn’t expect anything other than fun, commercial entertainment songs of reindeer, Santa Claus, snowflakes and good cheer.

So, when my son’s class rose to sing, “Christmas Love,” I was slightly taken aback by its bold title. Nicholas was aglow, as were all of his classmates, adorned in fuzzy mittens, red sweaters, and

bright snowcaps upon their heads.

Those in the front row, center stage, held up large letters, one by one, to spell out the title of the song. As the class would sing “C is for Christmas,” a child would hold up the letter C. Then, “H is for Happy,” and on and on, until each child holding up his portion had presented the complete message: “Christmas Love.”

The performance was going smoothly, until suddenly, we noticed a small, quiet, girl in the front row holding the letter “M” upside down. She was totally unaware her letter “M” appeared as a “W”.

The audience of first through sixth graders snickered at this little girl’s mistake. But she had no idea they were laughing at her, so she stood tall, proudly holding her “W”.

Although many teachers tried to shush the children, the laughter continued until the last letter was raised, and we all saw it together. A hush came over the audience and eyes began to widen. In that instant, we understood the reason we were there and why we celebrated the holiday in the first place—why even in the chaos, there was a purpose for our festivities. For when the last letter was held high, the message read loud and clear: “C H R I S T W A S L O V E” And, I believe, He still is.

Amazed in His presence . . . humbled by His love.

Again, have a blessed season.

Secretary Malak called the roll of officers and found all present with the exception of Second Vice President Sherry Miller. She then read the minutes of the November which were approved with one correction. Sister Clara Broz read the financial report for November. A thank you note from the family of Enos Wessels was read.

President Bruce thanked Carol Stayton for the nice Blue Room party and thanked all who helped in various ways. First Vice President Helen Hegwood said she enjoyed helping prepare for the annual Christmas party provided by the youth club, with the assistance of the Choral Club and the Orchestra.

Youth Leader Barbara Gonzales reported on the success of the Christmas party and expressed her thanks to Helen Hegwood for coordinating the assistance by the Choral Club and Orchestra.

Sergeant-at-Arms Johnny Broz announced that there were 56 members and one guest present and nine door prizes to be distributed at the close of the meeting, four of which

were donated by the SPJST Home Office.

Chairman of the Entertainment Committee Betty Theiss thanked members who were involved with the beautiful Christmas decorations and reminded all of the scheduled dances, especially the New Year’s Eve dance featuring Vrazels. Don’t forget that the usual black-eyed peas and cornbread will be served.

Chairman of the Social Night Committee Mildred Holeman again introduced and thanked her committee for so efficiently handling the duties of the committee. Increased attendance during the year is the result of advertising.

Reporting for the Audit Committee, Marceil Malak, in the absence of Chairman Ana Latigo, said that the Audit Committee reviewed the records of September and October and moved that the reports of committees and lodge official accounting records be approved. The motion carried.

The Scholarship Committee, reported by Carol Havemann, has sent out applications to seniors who have requested them and asked that they be

sure to return the completed applications by December 31. She acknowledged donations from the Birthday Sisters in memory of Josephine Buri.

The Birthday Club Sisters, report given by Lowrina Lindemann, thanked members for pastry donations at various functions during the year and invited all to join them for a turkey and dressing dinner on Wednesday.

The Men’s Club regularly scheduled meeting on the first Tuesday of January is to be re-scheduled due to the holiday, and members are asked to call for information to find out the replacement date.

Brother Fred Buri acknowledged Helen for her work to make the Christmas party an enjoyable and successful event and announced that the Choral Club is planning its annual trip to the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home in Needville on December 15.

Chairman of the Blue Room Committee Carol Stayton apologized for the problem with the food service at the party and stated that it occurred through no fault of her own. She thanked Linda Wehring and Lowrina Lindemann for assisting her and

reported a nice profit. Further, she thanked Mildred Holeman for having her office Christmas party, accounting for two full tables.

Chairman of the Board of Trustees John Broz said that members need to secure permission before spending money on behalf of the lodge if they wish to be reimbursed. Sister Edna Wehring said that this requirement has long been in effect but apparently has been overlooked in some instances.

Brother Broz also reported working with the architectural department at the University of Houston regarding the design and construction of the canopy in front of our lodge building.

Secretary Malak read the names of applicants and transfers, and they were approved into membership.

Vernell Foyt and Calvin Orsag were reported on the sick list, although Calvin was present.

The monthly meeting was completed by 11 a.m. After a brief recess, our annual meeting was convened.

Annual Meeting Secretary Malak again called the roll of officers, and all were present with the exception of Sherry Miller.

VĚSTNÍK Sister Clara Broz made a motion to dispense with the reading of the annual meeting minutes of 2006. Brother King Hegwood seconded the motion, and it was approved.

President Bruce expressed her thanks for the assistance received to make lodge activities successful during the year.

First Vice President Helen Hegwood reiterated the functions of the lodge in which she participated and said that she wishes only the best for Lodge 88 and all of the SPJST. Fraternal Activities Coordinator Esther Heinsohn reminded us to report fraternal activities to her in time to be recorded and reported to the SPJST Home Office. She thanked all who contributed to the food basket for a needy family and said that there was a sufficient amount to be distributed to three families. Great going, members!

Sergeant-at-Arms Johnny Broz reported 58 members present and seven door prizes to be distributed at the close of the meeting. These door prizes were contributed by Linda Wehring, Patricia Bruce, Johnny Broz and the SPJST Home Office.

Entertainment Chairman Betty Theiss thanked her committee for a job well done and introduced the members. Mildred Holeman said she was appreciative of being forgiven for being absent due to her health, but that she has enjoyed serving as Social Night Chairman.

Secretary Malak thanked officers and committee chairmen who presented written reports as they spoke at the monthly and annual meetings and asked officers and committees to do this in the future as it makes it much easier to prepare accurate and complete minutes for lodge records.

Chairman of the Board of Trustees John Broz mentioned the accomplishments of the year, such as required maintenance, new ice machine, upgraded alarm system, new carpet, handling of the western dances, and various rental activities.

Sister Carol Havemann thanked the members of the Scholarship Committee for assisting in screening the four applicants who were given the $500 scholarships in 2007 and to Johnny Broz for recycling the cans and presenting the money to the committee.

Brother Lyn Pflughaupt thanked all who donated hours to the Bar Committee and for donations by the Birthday Club Sisters and the Popcorn Committee.

Brother Emil Kuropata, Chairman of the Rules and Regulations Committee, read two proposed changes. These changes consist of

On behalf of the Workers’ Party Committee, Sister Dorothy Pflughaupt thanked all who helped. her with the task of making the preparations.

District Five Director Larry W. Pflughaupt asked for help in providing pastry for 300 people for the rental by the Gun Club on December 12.

The serving of a meal for this club’s rentals has boosted the income of the bar all throughout the year. He asked

all to give consideration to making a donation to the Czech Cultural Society, as they have excellent plans for the future—protecting Czech legacy.

President Bruce appointed a Tellers Committee to count ballots in the event of multiple nominations for lodge officers, board members and delegate positions. Appointed were JoAnn Buri, Bob Martinak, and Del Novak.

She then turned the gavel to First Vice President Helen Hegwood who asked for nominations for president.

There being no further nominations, Sister Bruce was elected by acclamation. The gavel was returned to President Bruce who called for nominations for the balance of the required officers. Megan Schauffele Congratulations to Lodge 133, San Antonio member Megan Schauffele who was a member of the University of Hartford Hawks volleyball team in Hartford, Connecticut. She was the recipient of the volleyball scholarship and played the position of outside hitter.

Megan is the daughter of Roy and Margaret (Matula) Schauffele and the granddaughter of Roy and Pat Schauffele of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Emil and Evelyn Matula. She is also a member of KJT Society No. 102 in San Antonio. The Matula family is a 100 percent SPJST Lodge 133, San Antonio and KJT Society No. 102 family. The entire family is proud of Megan’s accomplishments both in education and sports.

Before Hartford, Megan played softball and volleyball at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish in Selma, Texas. She played volleyball for four years at Incarnate Word High School. Megan helped lead her team to the state regionals or semi-

finals all four years. She was named team MVP as a sophomore, junior and senior and most improved as a freshman. Megan was also named first team AllDistrict all four years; named the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS) Newcomer of the Year in 2003; named to the TAPPS First Team All-State and TAPPS All-Star team in 2004, 2005 and 2006; named to the State All-Tournament Team in her final three seasons; and received Academic All-State and All-District Honors as a senior and named to the San Antonio Express News Super Team in 2006.

Megan will celebrate her 19th birthday on December 29. She is majoring in communication in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Hartford.

Since two of the members of the Tellers Committee, Bob Martinak and Jo Ann Buri, were listed among these delegates, they were removed from the Committee and replaced by King Hegwood and Frances Seeberger.

The names of all who qualified and desired to serve as delegates (a total of 42 members) where nominated and the list served as a ballot. Ballots were given to the Tellers Committee for tallying.

The report of the Remunerations Committee was read by Secretary Malak. There was no discussion, and it was approved.

Sister Mildred Holeman spoke of changes in the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum (LAM) — the name being changed to Czech Heritage Museum. Approximately $18,000 to $20,000 is still needed to meet the goal of $400,000. She asked all present to make a donation of any size so that we could go on record as having 100 percent participation in contributing toward this goal. A total of $1,492 was collected, and Sister Holeman promised to bring the amount to $2,000 before submitting to the CHM. A memorial service, prepared by Helen Hegwood, was held. Sister

Hegwood read a devotion. Secretary Malak read the names of the deceased members. Sister Hegwood sang “In the Garden” and “Amazing Grace,” accompanied by Sister Carolyn Beseda. The service was closed with a concluding devotional reading.

Guide Josephine Pflughaupt then reported 60 members present, and door prizes were awarded.

Christmas carols were sung and enjoyed while waiting for the ballot count.

When the ballots were counted, it was discovered that three persons shared first place so there was a drawing for this position. Thirty-five members with the highest number of votes are delegates, and seven are alternates.

Lodge 246 Morgan’s Point reports on Christmas fun SPJST Lodge 246, Morgan’s Point adults, youth members, and guests enjoyed an evening of holiday bliss and fraternalism on Sunday, December 9, 2007, at Cotton Patch Cafe in Temple.

Lodge 183, Arlington Recognizes Members

and wife Colleen; District Two Youth Counselor Patsy Koslovsky; and Assistant DYC Janet Lyon and husband Butch for joining us. Special thanks to State Training Coordinator Jim Wiest for arranging Santa’s visit from the North Pole.

Our lodge adopted two Angel Tree kids, a girl and a boy. These are children who are less fortunate and do not get much for Christmas. The lodge purchased a few clothes and one toy for these children. We also asked our members to bring an extra toy for them. A special thank you to everyone who brought toys for the two Angel Tree kids.

Due to time, we did not have a complete meeting. While we awaited dinner, President Charlie Herendon welcomed everyone. Then, we all introduced ourselves.

Secretary Ginger Greger distributed copies of the November meeting minutes. She also had a cute Christmas quiz for everyone to play, and the top adult and top youth who had the most questions correct received a prize.

Lodge 255, Katy presents December meeting minutes After our Christmas social/sandwich supper, the December 8, 2007, meeting of Lodge 255, Katy was called to order at 5 p.m. Lodge President C.W. Roberts led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. We then held a moment of silent tribute to all previously departed SPJST members.

Roll call of officers was taken with only President C.W. Roberts and Vice President Delisle Doherty present.

Guests State Fraternal Activities Coordinator (SFAC) Chester Jenke and wife Colleen and District Five State Field Representative (SFR) Ricky Peralta were welcomed to our meeting.

Lynn Johnsen was appointed secretary for the day.

Minutes of the previous meeting were approved as read, and the treasurer’s report was accepted as recited.

Discussion was held as to how much detail the lodge wanted to see in a written treasurer’s report. The lodge approved Tradition Bank as the bank chosen by the lodge officers. It was announced that we now have an EIN provided by the Internal Revenue Service. The youth club checking account has not yet been opened due to the inability to contact Youth Leader Cecil Penright.

C.W. made several announcements of upcoming SPJST statewide activities. Special attention was paid to the Progressive 42 Domino Tournament and fraternal bowling tournament due

to the interests of members present.

Brittney Doherty was unanimously selected as our Lodge 255 Fraternalist of the Year.

Six new members were accepted into our lodge. They are Betty Flix, Yzetta Flix, James McGowan, Eddie Singleton, Decarla Turner, and Marian Wanza. None were present.

We then moved to the new business section of our meeting. We discussed our delegate who will represent us at the 2008 convention and tabled a decision until our January meeting.

We need to find out if Secretary Wilda Perry has received paperwork from the SPJST Home Office in regards to that, and if not, contact Supreme Lodge Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas for information.

Lodge FAC Delisle Doherty asked for clarification on completing the paperwork necessary to receive Home Office funds for our fraternal acts. At this time, it is thought we need to complete 11 fraternal acts. Since our lodge was just chartered in November

we would have an extension until January 31, 2008, to complete the acts and submit the paperwork.

C.W. asked for clarification on whether or not we need bylaws for our local lodge. State FAC Chester Jenke offered the information that to his knowledge, primarily only lodges that have buildings have bylaws.

It was brought up that we need to purchase a United States flag for the lodge, but no action was taken on the suggestion.

It was suggested that C.W. appoint a social chairman to be in charge of meeting refreshments. He agreed to come up with someone prior to our next meeting.

There were several ideas discussed about notifying non-active members of lodge activities in hopes of increasing attendance. SFR Ricky Peralta is to provide us with a list of sales agents for our lodge, and we will request that they provide us email addresses of our members.

We also discussed a welcome letter

or brochure to be sent to new members as soon as possible after they are accepted into the lodge.

Supreme Lodge Vice President Gene McBride and State FAC Chester Jenke donated door prizes. Since it was our Christmas meeting, everyone present received a gift with leftover prizes held until a later meeting.

Lodge 258, Seguin holiday social December 30 Lodge 258, Seguin will host its annual holiday social on Sunday December 30, 2007, at Los Cucos Restaurant, located on IH 10 in Seguin. The social will begin at 4 p.m. All members are asked to bring non perishable food items to be donated to the Christian Food Cupboard.

Parents are asked to bring a gift with their child’s name on the gift.

Please limit the gift to not more than $10.

All members who assisted in the successful District Seven Fall Fun Day held in September will be treated to a meal. All others will be dutch treat.

A short business meeting will follow the meal. Business to be taken care of will be election of officers for 2008 and election of one delegate and one alternate for the SPJST Convention to be held in Killeen on June 9 to 11, 2008.

Fort Worth Friendship Club The Friendship Club met on Wednesday, December 5, 2007, for our Christmas social/meeting at the St. Thomas Parish Hall with 34 members present. The meeting was called to order by President Alice Barnes, the Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all, then Alice read a prayer “Ready for Christmas.” A prayer was said for Katherine Garrison, our former mem-

Wednesday, December 19, 2007 ber, and for Christine Zich, a friend to many, who both died on Friday before our meeting. Several of our members were absent to attend Christine’s funeral. Our sympathy goes to both families. May their departed souls rest in peace.

President Alice thanked Joe Kozel for providing the music before the meeting. Secretary Rose Ann Spann read the minutes from the previous meeting, and Treasurer Mary Ann Kozel gave the financial report. Both were accepted as presented. Mary Ann thanked Linda Horner for taking her place in November when she was unable to attend. It was also reported that Mary Ann Krivanek donated the turkey for our Thanksgiving luncheon. Thanks, Mary Ann, you did a super great job, and your turkey, dressing, and gravy were wonderful.

President Alice further thanked Rose Ann and her committee for the Christmas decorations. Each table and food table had a candle and flower arrangement.

The singing of “Happy Birthday” went out to December celebrants— Camille Bolcer, Joe Kozel, Lucille Kret, Frances Matthews, Agnes Reznicek, Rose Romeo, Debbie Skrasek, Helen Skrasek, Rita Thomas, and Lillian Smith. May you all have many more.

Following discussion, it was voted to give a monetary Christmas gift to Father Sal, and our semi-annual contribution to St. Thomas Church will be made for the use of the parish hall for our meetings.

Door prize winners were Tracy Horn, Joe Kozel, Stanley Krenek, Lucille Kret, Kathy Ormsbee, and Rose Steinman. I didn’t get names of all those who brought these gifts except I do know that Linda Horner and Betty Landsfeld brought gifts.

Thanks to all the donors. The winners enjoyed your contributions.

Hostesses for January will be Willie Mae Becan, Rose Cuba, Dotty Herek, Kitty Rippen, and Mary Windham.

President-Elect Mary Ann Krivanek was absent due to attending Christine Zich’s funeral, and President Alice said that she has asked Father Sal of St. Thomas Church to do the installation of officers this time at the January meeting. In the past, after Lydia Alholm retired as treasurer in 2000, after 17 years of service, she had been installing the officers and even wrote the duties of officers as they appear in our membership booklets.

Gifts in appreciation of loyal and many years of service were presented to outgoing President Alice Barnes and Vice President Rosie Steinman by Rose Ann Spann. A beautiful decorative cross with inscription was presented to each. Alice said she was having a Mass for all members of our club as her Christmas gift. What a beautiful gift!

The Christmas gift exchange was enjoyed, and show-and-tell was even more fun.

Following the meeting, a wonderful lunch with ham and all the other great dishes were enjoyed then games were played. A great time was had by all.

News Lucille Kret reported on our last month’s guest, Doris Tucker, who is a sister to member Wilma Stell. The fact that Doris’ youngest daughter was found shot in the head and that her funeral was being held on the date of our meeting. Doris’ daughter was living in San Antonio, had a great job, and didn’t return home following her shift at work. She was found dead the next morning. Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to Doris and her family.

Linda Horner reported on being a

new great-grandmother, but I didn’t get all the details. Lydia Alholm was absent due to attending Christine Zich’s funeral, so I reported that she and Roy became second time greatgrandparents to a baby boy born to grandson Matt and Julie Alholm in Illinois. The baby weighed nine pounds, seven ounces and was 21 inches long and named Anthony Joseph Alholm, II. Naturally, all great-grandparents are most proud.

Congratulations to Betty and Stanley Krenek who were celebrating their wedding anniversary on the day of our meeting. I didn’t get the number of years. I guess I need to be more attentive to details. Sorry!

Lillian Smith was honored with a special birthday dinner hosted by daughter Sharron Connelly on December 1. Family members and friends enjoyed all the wonderful food and visiting. Mrs. Smith enjoyed every minute of her special day.

Virgie Valentine is most excited about the forthcoming marriage of her granddaughter, Candice Valentine, to Peter Youssef in Egypt on December 29. She showed me a copy of the invitation which is most unusual; it had a drawing of a bride and groom resembling the couple sitting on a camel with a view of the church and reception building in the background.

They will be married at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. Virgie, I still think you need to buy that plane ticket and go!

My sister, Lil Kosarek, and I enjoyed attending the induction of Lil’s granddaughter, Melanie Kosarek, into the National Honor Society at the University of North Texas in Denton. Melanie’s major is hospitality management and as we learned, it is quite an honor to be inducted into this special international society.

When I opened the Fort Worth Star-Telegram today, I was especially pleased to see Lydia Alholm’s picture where she won a prize in a joke-telling contest at the Wellington Retirement Home where she and Roy live. Her prize was an AARP windchime crafted from empty prescription bottles tied to a clothes hanger.

Congratulations, Lydia!

Linda Horner had toe surgery recently but seems to be doing well.

We hope to see you in January without those crutches.

I was saddened to receive the phone message from Willie Mae Becan to tell me that her nephew’s daughter, Tierney Becan, died Friday.

I recall that in early 2006 I wrote about Tierney’s heart transplant surgery in Houston. Tierney’s dad is Anthony Becan, and the family attends my church at St. Andrews.

While I didn’t know Tierney or her parents, I felt especially close as Willie Mae always kept me updated on her progress, and we prayed for her in church. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to her family, and may her soul rest in peace.

My sister, Lil Kosarek, and I enjoyed an overnight trip to Fredericksburg, Texas, where we enjoyed the Christmas live musical at the RockBox Theater, shopped downtown Fredericksburg, toured the Nimitz Museum, visited the Wildseed Farms and Bell Mountain Winery, with the last stop at the chocolate store. It was a fun two-day trip.

I take a winter walk as the sun falls into shadows the sky turns gray and foggy like glass steamed over in a car and the wind is cold and icy as it rounds the corners and runs up my sleeves I pull up my hood and pull down my cap my heart pulls at my chest A Norther has come in.

Leaves skip along the ground running frantically propelled by the wind darting, flinging, flying they play tag across the yards then bunch up in brown heaps along the curb.

Some get caught under cars until the wind finds them again and tosses them wildly like dice across a table they tumble and roll

Section Lodge 6 Cottonwood youth makes football playoffs Dear Readers, I hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving with their families and remembered to thank God for everything we have received this year.

We did good with our football team. We made it to the area round of the playoffs but lost. I was glad we made it this far because this is my senior year. I had a really great time playing football.

I have been busy with my school work and taking care of my show ani-

school and cannot wait until the holidays.

Lodge 6 Cottonwood youth helps at community dinner Dear Readers, I sure have been busy with school and my show animals. I had a great Thanksgiving. I helped out at the community Thanksgiving dinner, and we served about 300 people. I attended our lodge Christmas party on December 2. We made gifts for the West rest home residents. I also helped with sending my cousin who is in the Army a box of goodies for Christmas.

I hope everyone has a nice Christmas and a happy new year.

Lodge 6 Cottonwood youth enjoys new nephew Dear Readers, I have a new nephew. My sister Brooke had a baby boy on September 27. His name is Jaidn Sparks, and he is a new member of Lodge 6, Cottonwood. My mom, Vickey Craig, is a new grandma and my nanie, Mary Karlik, is a great-grandmother again. I really enjoy holding and cuddling him.

I really enjoyed Thanksgiving. I helped with the community Thanksgiving meal. I cut up turkey and helped with the dressing.

Lodge 6 had its Christmas party on December 2. It was very nice.

I hope everyone has a very merry Christmas and a happy new year.

Lodge 17 New Tabor Youth Club reports on activities Dear Readers, Lodge 17, New Tabor Youth Club helped out again this year with our memorial service. We decorated the hall on Friday night. On Sunday, we presented the guests with a program and sang “Dashing Through the Snow.”

After singing, we had a short service given by Brother Henry Beseda.

Our youth lit candles for members who have passed away during this past year.

After the service, everyone enjoyed a meal of turkey and dressing. Thank you to the adult lodge for hosting this event again.

Christmas on the Square.

On December 8, we hosted our annual all-day dance clinic where we taught dance routines to students in third through eighth grades. During the clinic, we prepared them for the “show off” performance. The show off was for their parents to see what they have learned at the clinic. It is also a fund-raiser for our team.

On December 11, we performed with the dance clinic participants at a basketball game. On Friday December 14, we have been asked to perform during a customer appreciation. All these performances will help us to get ready for our competitions which begin in February.

I know all of you are busy with Christmas celebrations, too. I wish all of you a very merry Christmas and a happy new year.

The December birthday celebrant was Jessica Fucik. Members sang Christmas carols, and door prizes were exchanged.

The next meeting will be held on January 6 at the Taiton Community Center. The craft for the January meeting will be to make a craft that you can enter in YAD. The charity will be the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive.

The meeting was adjourned at 11:20 a.m. with the motion to adjourn made by Danielle Zalman and seconded by Ryan Drapela.

I rode on the SPJST Float in the Temple Christmas parade with the beseda group on Monday, December 3.

Secretary Chandler Malazzo called the roll and read the minutes from the past meeting. With no corrections, the minutes were approved as read.

Treasurer Nicolas Havemann gave the treasurer’s report.

After the meeting, we had a gift exchange. We decorated the hall for the memorial service. We then went to Gattitown in College Station.

There, we met with other members of District One. Our next meeting will be at 3 p.m. on January 5.

Lodge 17 New Tabor youth: busy dance season Dear Readers, This has already been a busy season. Our school dance team—the Honeybees—have been making weekly appearances. On December 7, we performed at our community

Center in conjunction with the lodge’s annual Christmas social. The meeting was called to order at 11 a.m. by President Kenna Bubela. The members completed their December Vestnik projects.

Luc Marcaurele led the youth club members in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, SPJST motto and SPJST prayer. The roll of officers and members was called by Secretary Steven Drapela. He then read the minutes.

The guest at the meeting was Jayca Hernandez. The treasurer’s report was given by Treasurer Danielle Zalman. Members were reminded that dues are payable for the new year and are $1.50 per member.

Under old business, the SPJST Float participated in the El Campo Christmas parade on December 6. In keeping with the parade theme of “Christmas Around the World,” SPJST members Kenna Bubela and Donavon Krpec wore their beseda costumes for the parade. The float won first place in the non-commercial division.

Under new business, LIT camp will be held on June 6 to 8, 2008, at Forest Glen which is close to Huntsville. Camp Tee-Shirt Design Contest entries are due by January 31, and the theme is “SPJST Best in the State Celebrate ’08.”

2007. Joe was born in Bryan, Texas, on August 16, 1918. Joe served his country as a member of the United States Army durJoe Novak ing World War II, Korea, and Vietnam Wars and retired after 31 years of faithful service.

Joe was a member of SPJST Lodge 88, Houston.

Joe is preceded in death by parents Albert and Tracy Novak; brothers Woodrow R., Stanley and Albert Novak; and sisters Ann Wysatta and Emily Morton He is survived by several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, September 29 with the Reverend Ernest Trueblood officiating in the Garden of the Avenue of Flags at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.

The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, September 28 at the funeral home.

She died Tuesday, November 13 at a Temple hospital.

Visitation was from 8 to 9 p.m.

In Memory of William Pavliska William J. Pavliska, Sr., 88, went to be with his Lord and Savior on December 5, 2007, in San Antonio, Texas. His rosary was on December 9 at Holy Name Catholic Church.

Monsignor Frank Kurzaj officiated.

The funeral service was held Monday, December 10 at Holy Name Catholic Church with the burial at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.

William “Bill” Pavliska was born February 11, 1919, in Granger, Texas.

He served in the Army during World War II, retired from the Air Force in 1960, and retired again after 20 years of service at Wilford Hall Medical Center. On November 25, 1942, he married Gertrude Ann Schwertich, his wife of 60 years. He also enjoyed a

game of “42” or “taroky” and spent his leisure time gardening. His lifelong service in the food industry carried over to his volunteer work during retirement years, cooking hamburgers with his fellow parishioners or serving kolaches and strudel with Gertrude at the Czech booth at the Texas Folklife Festival. He was most proud of being a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus and a member of SPJST Lodge 133, San Antonio, KJT, the Czech Heritage Society of Texas, and Holy Name Men’s Club.

He was preceded in death by his wife; four brothers; and two sisters.

His survivors include daughter

Janice Collins and husband William; son William Pavliska, Jr. and wife Linda; grandchildren; and greatgrandchildren.

ed sister, CHRISTINE SLOVAK ZICH. Christine Slovak Zich, 87, died Friday, November 30, 2007, in Fort Worth, Texas. Mass of Christian burial was held Wednesday, December 5 at St. Andrew Catholic Church in Fort Worth where Christine and her husband Carl were charter members.

Interment was at Mount Olivet Cemetery. The vigil service was at Thompson’s Harveson and Cole Funeral Home at 6 p.m. Tuesday, December 4.

Christine was born June 23, 1920.

She was a very active member of SPJST, holding the office of secretary

of Lodge 92, Fort Worth for many years. Christine also served many times as an SPJST Convention delegate.

She was preceded in death by husband Carl William Zich; and daughter Carol Everett.

Survivors include daughter Shirley Zich; sister-in-law Emily Slovak; and the loving Martinez family.

Czech Heritage Society offers scholarship The Czech Heritage Society of Texas is accepting applications for the Victor Peter Memorial Scholarship. The $500 stipend was established in memory of the late Victor Alfons Peter, who died in 1996.

Czech Heritage Museum: almost over the top There are only a few days left to help the Czech Heritage Museum meet its Challenge Grant. The Czech Heritage Museum (formerly known as the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum) has been offered a $200,000 challenge grant to help with the renovation of the Hanus Building to house the Czech Heritage Museum. To receive this grant, the CHM must raise another $2,154 in donations or pledges by December 31, 2007.
