We, the Officers and the Directors of SPJST, and in conjunction with the State of Texas, do hereby proclaim
October 2007
Czech Heritage Month as
in the SPJST
WHEREAS, Texans of Czech descent have made significant and lasting contributions to our state’s prosperity, heritage, culture; and
WHEREAS, beginning in the late 1840’s Czech settlers came in growing numbers to the Lone Star State, gravitating to the rich soil of the black lands and upper coastal plains, these industrious pioneers created close-knit communities that kept intact their unique old-world customs while adapting to the challenges of a new land; and
The SPJST kicked off its annual 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive on October 1. Donations are tax-deductible and 100 percent of the amount contributed is applied toward scholarships. Acknowledgement of individual donations will be published in the Vestnik. WHEREAS, Czechs are renowned for their exemplary work ethics and love of democracy and have established standards of excellence as both private and public citizens to whom all can aspire; and because for generations, Texans of Czech extraction have made many notable contributions, both cultural and historic, to the betterment of our state; and their many accomplishments in this regard are truly worthy of special legislative recognition.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Lodge Officers and Directors of the SPJST, do hereby urge each and every member to recognize the contributions made to this Society and to Texas by the Czech settlers and their descendants.

Many of the items pictured above are from the Czech Republic, and they will be awarded to SPJST members in a drawing in this year’s Vestnik Czech Heritage Month activities that will appear in several Vestniks during the month of October. This week’s activities can be found on page 4. The only way to be eligible for one of these prizes is to send in your entry by October 24, 2007, to the Vestnik office.
