October is Czech Heritage Month October is just days away, and SPJST is gearing up for Czech Heritage Month. We will kick it off in next week’s Vestnik. Thanks to Lodge 79, Corpus Christi member Jerry Elzner for all of his work in promoting Czech Heritage Month in Texas. Jerry asks that lodges across the state contact their county judges and ask them to proclaim October as Czech Heritage Month. He shares the following sample letter with the Vestnik: Dear Judge, The 76th Texas Legislature declared the month of October as Czech Heritage Month in Texas.

House Resolution No. 308 was signed by then Governor George Bush on July 1, 1999. The Czech Heritage Society of Texas which is celebrating its 25th year this year, requests you proclaim Czech Heritage Month in your county in October. We hope all 254 County Judges in Texas will join in this venture as well as over 100 mayors, 32 United States Representatives in Washington, D.C.; 15 bishops, and two United States Senators.

Send lodge, district important dates for the 2008 SPJST Calendar The Vestnik office is looking for your lodge’s and your district’s important dates for the 2008 SPJST Calendar. There’s no cost, and this can be a great reminder of the important dates for lodge members.

What qualifies as an “important date”? Think in terms of your big annual events such as picnics, member appreciation dinners, and heritage day observances. On the district level, think in terms of district meetings and districtwide activities.

Please get together with your lodge members at your next meeting and determine which dates you want to

include on next year’s SPJST Calendar. The deadline for submitting your lodge and district calendar information to the Vestnik office is Friday, October 12. District Six Fall Meeting: October 14 in Bay City Dear District Six Members, The Fall District Meeting is right around the corner on Sunday, October 14, 2007, at the Eagles Hall in Bay City. This year, we will once again have the adult contests for Needlework, Christmas Ornament, and Kolache Baking. The horseshoes contest will depend on the weather and oustide hall conditions.

Guidelines for the contests are the same as last year. Registration will end at 11:30 a.m. The kolaches need

to be on a disposable plate with 13 individual kolaches of the same fruit, cottage cheese, or cream cheese flavor. Judging will follow the youth rule book. If you have any questions, please contact me at (361) 798-3347.

District Six sets October 14 Meeting, Family Fun Day The District Six Fall Meeting and Family Fun Day will be Sunday, October 14, 2007, at the Eagles Hall in Bay City. Lodge 240 will be hosting the event with registration starting at 11 a.m. A delicious meal will be provided at 12 noon followed by a short meeting. The afternoon will be filled with fun and games.

All District Six members are encouraged to bring their family and friends. New sales agents and members are invited to participate in the District Family Fun Day and see what SPJST fraternalism is all about.

There will be door prizes, delicious food, kolache, needlework and ornament contests, horseshoe tournament (weather permitting), games, and fun for the whole family.

Every lodge should bring a door

prize and two desserts. Members attending may also bring prizes (pantry items, toys, etc.) for the wheel of fortune. Any member wanting to participate in a district contest should review the criteria for each contest. District Six FAC Helen Zabransky will be publishing the rules in the Vestnik.

However, the campaign continues until December 2007.

In conjunction with SPJST’s Rhythm ’07 program, local lodges were assigned application goals for the year. Each lodge goal was based largely on past performance and perceived potential.

Octoberfest—October 6 Lodge 1 will celebrate Octoberfest and Czech Heritage Month with a dance on Saturday, October 6, 2007, from 8 p.m. to 12 midnight.

Music will be provided by Feedback and Central Texas Sounds.

The youth club provided the meal and dessert for the members in honor of Grandparents Day. It was delicious, and they did a great job. They also gave each grandparent a small gift.

There were 54 youth club members, two guests and 19 adults presents.

The youth had one beseda group dance at the Kolache Festival. Some of the youth participated in the youth Kolache Bake Show. Some will also participate in the 5K Kolache Krunch Fun Run/Walk. The youth club had a Grandparents Day program on Sunday, September 9 at the hall. It was well attended.

The District One Fall Meeting will be held at Snook on Sunday, October 14. The youth are encouraged to participate in the Christmas Ornament Contest.

The barbecue pit is an on-going project.

Next Meeting—October 3 The next meeting will be Wednesday, October 3 at 7:30 p.m.

The youth club will meet at 6:30 p.m.

Lodge 17 New Tabor reports on September meeting President Randy Gaas called the September 3, 2007, meeting of SPJST Lodge 17, New Tabor to order. Vice President Hildebrand secured signatures from all members present.

Secretary Trcalek called the roll of officers and read the minutes from the previous meeting. There were no corrections to the minutes; therefore, they were approved as read.

Under correspondence, we received a good report note from the

Texas Workforce. A thank you note was received from the Snook VFW for our help with its annual fund-raiser.

The treasurer’s report was given by Mr. Mrnustik.

Youth Leader Mabrey Dowell reported our youth beseda dancers were performing in the opening ceremonies of the Kolache Festival. They will also be assisting the SPJST Home Office with promoting the Kolache Eating Contest.

The following Sunday, our youth will be hosting the Grandparents Day and Awards Banquet.

District One Fall Fun Day will be held in Snook on October 14.

With no further business, the meeting was adjourned.

Lodge 39, Bryan members to attend District One Fall Fun Day Please be advised that due to the District One Fall Fun Day being hosted on the same day as our regular lodge meeting, Youth Leader Bennie Roesler made a motion that we cancel our October meeting, and that we all go to Lodge 9, Snook. Lodge 40 El Campo-Hillje presents memorial service President Sheldon Holub called the meeting of Lodge 40, El CampoHillje to order at 12:30 p.m. with 44 members and four guests present.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Daisy Enriquez. A moment of silence was observed for the deceased members and ill in the community.

The memorial service for deceased members was led by Vice President Ardis Bacak and Secretary Dee Floyd. They called the names of the following members who are no longer with us and lit a candle for each—Evelyn Krpec, Albina Michna, Robert Furch, Hedvika Zacek, Adeline Svatek, Loretta Jaks, Wilhemina Maly, Elton Adamcek, and Eugene Holub.

Roll call found all officers and trustees present.

The minutes of the August meeting were accepted as printed in the Vestnik. A motion was made from the floor by Edmund Kana and seconded

by J.C. Kocurek. The motion passed.

Treasurer’s report was given by Lorraine Kana. FAC Betty Sanders gave her report and announced that the October meeting will be on the 7th at 2 p.m.

Youth Leader Debbie Sczech gave her report.

Ardis Bacak talked about State YAD in Killeen and about the District Six Tour in Corpus Christi.

J.C. gave a report on mowing.

There was no report of resolutions.

Snack bar report was given by Josephine Bacak. Jerry Gensler reported on by-laws. Gladys Cerny gave the entertainment report. There was no hall rental information.

Vlasta Bartos gave the District Six Cemetery report. The bingo report given stated that $100 games continue and that there is $650 jackpot bingo.

A motion was made by Debbie Sczech to accept these new members into our lodge—Lorelee Rae Dennis, Fischer Dean Walcott, and Vanessa Salazar. The motion was seconded

by J.C. Kocurek. Motion carried.

There was no old or new business.

Birthday celebrants were Vlasta Bartos, Gladys Cerny, Evelyn Linhart, and Sheldon Holub.

Celebrating an anniversary were Mr. and Mrs. Joe Cerny - 55 years.

Taylor Czech Chorus—October 21 On Sunday October 21, we will welcome the Taylor Czech Chorus to our lodge. They will present a concert at our hall. Speaking of available, have you bought your copy of their newest CD yet. If not, please see one of the group’s many members to get one as soon as possible. They may even sign it that day.

Lodge 88, Houston reports on September meeting First Vice President Helen Hegwood presided at our meeting on September 10, 2007, due to the absence of President Patricia Bruce.

Brother Sydney Jurchak gave the invocation, and Sister Hegwood led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Secretary Marceil Malak read the names of six departed members since the August meeting, and the membership stood in silent tribute in memory of those members. Minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved.

Sister Clara Broz read the financial report for the month of August.

Secretary Malak read a thank you note from SPJST Education and Nature Center (ENC) District Three Representative John J. Engelke

thanking our membership for our recent donation to the ENC. Sister Hegwood spoke of Czech Day, reiterating some of the plans underway, and she encouraged all to attend. Booths of various kinds, good food, and other fun and games will be available, so be sure to attend.

FAC Esther Heinsohn informed us of the 42 domino tournament to be held at Lodge 48, Beyersville on October 20 and the District Five Fall Meeting at Lodge 88, Houston on September 22. She reminded us that on October 8, we should arrive at the lodge by 6 p.m. and bring a covered dish (preferably Czech food) and enjoy a meal before the monthly meeting. Czech Feszt Volunteers, Vendors Needed

The City of Temple and the Czech Heritage Museum (formerly the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum) are hosting a celebration of Czech Heritage and Culture on Saturday, November 3 in the Santa Fe Gardens in downtown Temple from 10 a.m. to midnight and are seeking volunteers to help with the event.

Co-chairpersons for the Czech Feszt are Anna Foster, Parks and Leisure Services Events Director for the City of Temple, and Sandi Wicker, Executive Director of the Czech Heritage T EMPLE, Museum.

N O V E M B E R To kick off the day of music, food and fun, there will be a Little Mr. and Miss Czech Temple pageant at 10 a.m. and a parade of costumes at 4 p.m.

Children’s activities and field events will begin immediately after the pageant. There will be Czech bands playing throughout the day, with beseda dancing demonstrations. In the evening, The Bobby Flores Band will provide entertainment.

One of the highlights of Czech Feszt will be an area dedicated to Czech genealogy study. The Texas Czech Genealogy Society will provide information and volunteers to help find information on family trees and immigration. The Santa Fe Railroad Museum, adjacent to the

Santa Fe Gardens, will host a temporary Czech heritage display in the museum. Kroj (native Czech costumes), exquisite needlework, and handmade Czech puppets and toys will be featured.

Another treat will be a kolache baking contest on the third floor of the Temple Library building at 10 a.m. and a domino tournament in the same location in the afternoon.

This is the perfect opportunity for groups to raise funds with food and/or merchandise booths.

There is limited space available, and T E2X0 A0 S7 we would encourage 3 , possible vendors and groups to contact Sandi Wicker at the Czech Heritage Museum (254) 8992935 for details and to reserve your space as soon as possible.

Anna Foster is in charge of logistics for Czech Feszt and needs volunteers to help with perimeter control, beverage service, hosting and other jobs. Volunteering will be great fun and a volunteer party is planned to precede the event.

Sergeant-at-Arms Johnny Broz reported 63 members present with 11 door prizes available for the drawing at the close of the meeting. Sister Betty Theiss reported on past and future dance attendance and said she hoped for improvement in the future.

Social Night Chairman Mildred Holeman reported that she delivered some items from the Estate of Louis and Oleta Hanus to the Czech Heritage Museum (formerly known as the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum). She expressed her gratitude to the Bingo Committee for their continued good work.

Brother John Broz, Chairman of the Board, reported replacement of motion detectors in the building, as well as the addition of more being placed in other areas of the property.

New technology is expected to make the new equipment more efficient.

Bids are being taken to replace the carpet in the Blue Room. At the next meeting, we will be given information about the forthcoming Stroke Scan procedures which will be available in October. Brother Broz also reported that 515 persons attended the Telstars dance recently.

Ana Latigo, Chairman of the Audit Committee, reported that the lodge records for May and June were reviewed, and she moved that they be accepted as presented. The motion was seconded and approved.

Speaking for the Scholarship Committee, Sister Carol Havemann reported that the last of the four scholarships has now been awarded, and she acknowledged contributions by several members to the committee’s funds for future scholarships.

The Birthday Club Sisters will have fried chicken and covered dish food at their next meeting. Pastries and servers are needed for the District Five Fall Meeting. Sister Carol Stayton thanked all who helped make the Blue Room Party on August 19 so successful.

A Workers Party is planned for Sunday, September 15, and tickets were distributed to members who were present. Sister Dorothy Pflughaupt apologized for the delay in distributing the tickets.

Lodge 29, Taylor kolache queen wins at Westfest Lodge 29, Taylor member Irene Bucanek, owner of the Kolache Shoppe located at 919 North Fourth Street in Taylor, Texas, added more trophies to her growing collection this year at the Westfest Kolache Contest.

In the professional category, Bucanek won first place for her fruit kolaches, second place for her cream cheese pineapple and jalapeno kolaches, and second place in her pineapple coconut buchta.

Bucanek said with the help of her daughter Debbie, they work hard to keep the Czech tradition alive in Taylor. They also make beautiful wedding cakes, birthday and anniversary cakes, homemade cookies and bread, gingerboy cookies, and different flavors of kolache.

The Kolache Shoppe is 88 years old. Irene is the second owner, and she has been there 32 years. Irene and her husband Charlie still have time to visit their four children, 11 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and travel to Rockport, Texas, where they love to go to the beach.

They all are members of SPJST Lodge 29, Taylor.

Irene says she loves Elvis, and she has a lot of Elvis memorabilia on the wall in her shop.

Sister Malak read the names of six new members, and they were approved into membership. Members reported on the sick list are Enos Wessels, Edna Wehring, Ora Nell Hassebrock, Ann Kilgo, and Mary Roznovsky’s son, Gary. Flo and Calvin Orsag were welcomed back after being on last month’s sick list.

Following discussion of the Fraternalist of the Year, Sister Clara Broz moved that anyone who wished to present a resume for a candidate should do so at the next meeting. We were reminded that if anyone had proposals for changes to the Rules and Regulations of Lodge 88, they must be presented to the committee before the end of the October meeting in order to be considered.

Guide Josephine Pflughaupt read the names of the birthday and anniversary celebrants. Door prizes were awarded to 11 lucky members.

Lodge 92 Fort Worth hosts Czech language class A beginner’s Czech language class will be offered in Fort Worth starting on Thursday, September 27, 2007.

These classes will be held each Thursday night for 12 weeks ending on December 20. The class will be from 7 to 9 p.m. at SPJST Lodge 92, Fort Worth’s National Hall, located at 3316 Roberts Cutoff Road in Fort Worth, Texas.

This is a very concentrated course that will cover pronunciation, grammar, reading, and vocabulary. It will also include presentations on Czech

All you need to bring is a pencil and a desire to learn a little Czech. How much you learn will be up to you, as you will get plenty of material to study. The presentations will start promptly at 7 p.m., so come a little early for good seating. Please note, only the class attendees will receive the CD-ROMs and other class materials.

This is a similar course that has been taught in West, Dallas, and Ennis in the past and has been well received.

Lodge 133 San Antonio presents meeting minutes Members of Lodge 133, San Antonio met on Sunday, September 16, 2007, at 2 p.m. The officers were all present. We were happy to see Michelle Popp who is now Mrs. Clay Click. At our last meeting, she and her new husband were on their honeymoon.

President Popp welcomed the members to the meeting.

Congratulations were extended to Frances and Alvin Schimcek who are celebrating 61 years of marriage. A gift certificate will be sent to them.

We missed Marie Netek who was recovering from surgery. Emil Matula reported that he spoke to Bill Mares and that he was doing well.

The Fraternalist of the Year for 2007 is Evelyn Matula. Her name and information will be submitted to the SPJST Home Office.

No October Meeting There will be no October meeting since the meeting room at Good Shepherd will be unavailable. The church is holding its annual festival that Sunday. So please note, we will

not have a meeting on October 21.

Next Meeting—November 18 We will hold our annual Thanksgiving luncheon on Sunday, November 18. The lodge will cater a complete Thanksgiving dinner.

Members are asked to bring desserts.

The luncheon will start at 12:30 p.m.

Lodge 187 Round Rock members celebrate Grandparents Day At our September meeting of Lodge 187, Round Rock, a wonderful hamburger supper was provided

by Ruby Bartz. Thanks a million. It was very tasty.

The “K” sisters, Margie and Jennave, provided the program.

Margie gave a brief history of Grandparents Day. Did you know it has a flower, the “Forget-me-not,” and a song, “The Grandparents Song” based on “La ci darem la mano” by Wolfgang Mozart? Also, Grandparents Day was set in September because we seniors are in the “autumn” of our lives.

Jennave read an article entitled “Retarded Grandparents.” It was a take off of what a child thought of his “Retired Grandparents.” He had a hard time pronouncing words and understood different meanings for some of the places they went for fun, like wreck building for recreation.

Members then shared pictures and mementos of their grandchildren.

Our oldest grandmother was Gladys Nelson, and our oldest grandfather was Wilfred Fuchs. Our youngest grandmother was Ruby Bartz, and our youngest grandfather was Red Oman.

Next Meeting—October 14 Our next meeting will be October 14. The board meeting is at 2 p.m., and the business meeting will be at 2:30 p.m. We will not have a meal at this meeting. Hope to see you there.

Birthday Club Sisters of Lodge 88, Houston The meeting was called to order at 11 a.m. by President Zajicek.

The president had Ernest Anders lead the Pledge of Allegiance, and a

prayer was said by Helen Hegwood.

Secretary Bette Hurta had the roll call with 12 members present. We had two more than last month.

Secretary Bette Hurta read the minutes from the August meeting.

There were no changes so the minutes stand as read.

Vice President Zajicek asked for cooks, but there are no cooks. Ladies must take care of their dishes. It is working out pretty well.

The vice president asked for cake bakers, and they are Margie Anders, Evelyn Zajicek, and Lowrina Lindemann.

Ticket Chairman Bessie Dewer thanked everyone for the gifts on the table.

Treasurer Lowrina Lindemann talked about the September 22 event.

The Lodge 88 Birthday Club Sisters will work the pastry booth. Margie, Bette, Lowrina, and myself will be working from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The meal is free of charge. Fried chicken will be served, and we are to bring a covered dish. So, ladies, bring a cake.

Fort Worth Friendship Club The Fort Worth Friendship Club met on Wednesday, September 5, 2007, at St. Thomas Parish Hall for its monthly meeting with 35 members present and one guest—Monalee Hattendorf, who joined the Club.

Welcome, Monalee! Other guests were Earline Finney, guest of Anna Marie Moncrief, and Arlene Drennan and Joe Szabo, guests of Elizabeth Creamer.

President Alice Barnes welcomed everyone, called the meeting to order, and recited the Pledge of Allegiance.

Joe Kozel was thanked for providing the wonderful music before the meeting. “Our Father” was recited for all those members sick or who have been sick. Lois Smith was welcomed back following her stay in the hospital. She is looking good. Mary Ann Kozel had surgery on her foot and was unable to be at the meeting.

Currently, she has to use a walker.

District Six Bowling Tournament Raises Money for Endowment Scholarship Fund The SPJST District Six Bowling Tournament was held Saturday, August 18, 2007, at the El Campo Bowling Center. Registration was held from 12 noon to 1 p.m. with the bowling tournament beginning at 1 p.m.

Participating in the day’s events were numerous lodges and youth clubs across the District Six area including Lodge 4, Hallettsville; Lodge 30, Taiton; Lodge 32, Victoria; Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje; and Lodge 240, Bay City along with Hallettsville Youth Club, Taiton Youth Club, El Campo-Hillje Youth Club, and Bay City Youth Club. There were five adult teams and four youth teams vying for the awards to be given away.

Chairpersons for the bowling tournament events were District Six Director Michael Ahlstrom and

District Six State Field Representative Karen Kaspar. The bowling center coordinator for the afternoon tournament was Nancy Fucik of Lodge 30, Taiton.

Special guests attending and participating in the bowling tournament were District One Director Donnie Victorick, wife Janice, and son Ashley and State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Chester Jenke and wife Colleen.

Appreciation is expressed to Kathy Ahlstrom and Marjorie Treumer for assisting with the registration as the teams arrived for the tournament games and to District Six Fraternal Activities Coordinator Helen Zabransky, Patsy Zabransky, and Colleen Jenke for their service as tabulators for the tournament winners’ results.

Rose Ann read a piece from the Vestnik titled, “All I Really Need to Know, I Learned in Kindergarten” which was enjoyed by all.

Sunshine Person Willie Mae Becan had a busy month. She sent get well cards to Lillian Smith, Martha Boenisch, Carrie Milan, Earl Godfrey, Mary Ann Kozel, Alice Barnes, and Harold Balvin. A sympathy card was mailed to the family of Earl Godfrey.

Annie Whitsell reported that we will have the little gift raffle in October. Members donate wrapped gifts which are used for a raffle.

November is the next month that we bring items for the St. Thomas Food Pantry. Faith Lindeau reported that during August, the pantry served 828 folks or 200 families.

The drawing for the door prizes was a lot of fun. Nettie Naugle won the first fun gift with Betty and Stanley Krenek winning the second one. Debbie Skrasek and Jewel Addison were also winners, but I don’t have the names of the persons that brought them.

“Happy Birthday” was sung to September celebrants Elsie Anders, Ann Conner, Mary Ann Krivanek, Faith Lindeau, Nettie Naugle, Barbara Orand, and Libbie Vrla.

May you all have many more.

Hostesses for October will be Ann Connor, Ella Greer, Tracy Horn, and Wilma Stell.

Earline Finney thanked everyone

for the friendship extended to her father, Earl Godfrey, who passed away, and she thanked the Club for the monetary donation made in his memory. Rose Ann thanked everyone who helped with the funeral reception which she, Betty, and Stanley Krenek gave, and further thanked all those members who attended.

It was decided to have a suggestion box for any suggestions or complaints; but, it will be called a cheers and jeers box.

Joe Kozel gave his commercial advertising the Czech Heritage Day at SPJST Lodge 92, Fort Worth on September 15 and invited everyone to attend. Rose Steinman gave her commercial advertising the Czech Feszt in Temple on November 3 and said everyone is invited.

The theme for the day was Hawaiian Luau with all the tables decorated with palm trees. Thanks, Rose Ann and Betty. Hostesses were Mary Schneider, Debbie Skrasek, and Helen Skrasek. They did a super, great job. The highlight of the day was the hula dance performed by Mary Schneider, Aggie Reznicek in her grass skirt, and Harold Balvin.

As Willie Mae said, it was hilarious.

Following the meeting, grace was said, a wonderful lunch with lots of Hawaiian-style dishes was enjoyed then games were played. I hear that a good time was had by all. I was not able to attend the meeting. Special thanks go out to Rose Ann, Sharron, Willie Mae, Annie, and Elizabeth for contributing to my article.

News Rose Cuba enjoyed a wonderful weekend visit with her family in Wichita Falls and reported having a great time. Mary Windham is currently visiting in Minnesota. We will want to hear all about your trip.

Annie Whitsell is looking forward to October 18 when her name-sake great-granddaughter, Anna Lynn Milford from Erie, Colorado, will come visit to celebrate her first birthday.

Sharron Connelly enjoyed the recent visit with her daughter Laurie Whitney who now lives in Aman, Jordan, where her husband and daughter are working to rejuvenate all the agriculture in Iraq. Laurie’s husband was invited to take this position by Texas A&M. Sister Mary Charlotte Vesely of the Chicago area will celebrate being a nun for 70 years on October 6.

According to Lydia Alholm who has been invited, there will be a big celebration. Sister Mary Charlotte taught school at St. Thomas, and while I

didn’t know her before, I did get to meet her while attending the Sokol Slet in Chicago a few years ago, and I was surprised to learn she knew and remembered all the Czech/Catholics in Fort Worth. I still recall the wonderful visit Anna Marie, Rose Ann and I had with her. In the event anyone would like to send her a card, her address is 1910 Maple Avenue, Lisle, Illinois 60532-2164. I bet she would be delighted to hear from some of her students.

Congratulations go out to Henrietta and Jerry Milan who celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on September 15 with a dinner and dance at the Sokol.

This is Dear Readers, I am going to school now. I am enjoying it very much. I have been having fun being around my friends. I liked Westfest. I hope everyone enjoyed lunch on Grandparents Day that our youth club prepared.

Dear Readers, School has started, and I have been busy with cross country. I am running every day to get in shape for our meets. I ran at Westfest and placed third in my class. I also volunteered my time to work on Saturday and Sunday in several booths at Westfest.

I also helped and performed for Sokol on both days, too.

On Grandparents Day, our youth club prepared lunch for the grandparents and presented them with a gift.

Lodge 6 Cottonwood youth performs at Westfest Dear Readers, I hope everyone enjoyed Westfest.

I had fun working in the SPJST booth and the Sokol funnel cake booth.

Sokol performed both on Saturday and Sunday. We did real good.

We had lunch for Grandparents Day on September 9 and gave them all a gift. It was a very good meal.

Lodge 17 New Tabor Youth Club reports on activities

Lodge 17 New Tabor youth assists with contest

The September, 2007, meeting of SPJST Lodge 17, New Tabor Youth Club was called to order by President Lindsey Jones.

The youth recited the Pledge of Allegiance and the SPJST Motto.

Secretary Chandler Malazzo called the roll. We had two new members— Conager and Dakota Sanchez. The minutes from the August meeting were approved as read. Treasurer Nick Havemann gave us his report.

Under old business, we discussed the pool party. Under new business, we made plans to take magazines to the nursing home. We also finalized plans for the Grandparents Banquet and Award Ceremony which was held on September 9.

Youth Leader Dowell reminded us that the beseda dancers were performing at the opening ceremonies of the Kolache Festival. Those who could stay after the ceremonies were encouraged to help with the Kolache Eating Contest.

District One Fall Fun Day will be in Snook on October 14.

Registration is from 1:30 to 2 p.m.

We will have a Halloween party on October 28. Hot dogs will be served. Those wanting to dress up can, but it is not mandatory.

Door prizes were provided by Nick and Colby Havemann and snacks from Brittanie Gaas.

Our meeting was adjourned.

The October meeting/Halloween party will be held on the 28th.

Lodge 17 New Tabor youth dance at festival Our beseda dancers performed during the opening ceremonies for the Kolache Festival held in Caldwell on September 8. It was a warm day, but we had a good time.

We also hosted the Grandparents Day program and awards banquet.

We furnished fried chicken as the meat, and all the youth club members brought the other items. Everyone had a good time.

Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Club meets October 7 Dear Readers, We went to Elgin on Sunday September l6, 2007, for the District Two Fall Meeting. We had the Christmas Ornament Contest and a

contest to count the number of items in a jar. I was the nearest to the correct amount in the jar with the candy bars along with two other people. We had a good time.

Lodge 107 Floresville Youth Club reports on September meeting Dear Readers, The September 9, 2007, meeting of SPJST Lodge 107, Floresville Youth Club was called to order at 12:30 p.m.

by President Zachary Bayer. Eric Carpenter led the Pledge of Allegiance.

The register was read. There were seven members, one guest, and 14 adults present. The minutes were read and approved. Ryan Henke gave the treasurer’s report.

Our youth leader, Wendy Pruski, reported that it was Grandparents Day. Wendy discussed the Texas Fraternal

Before the youth club meeting, the youth enjoyed a sack lunch during the adult meeting.

After the youth club meeting, we went on an outing to Green Acres Golf and Games. We played miniature golf, drove go-karts, bumper boats, did the trampoline thing, and played water wars. We also played arcade games and earned tickets to exchange for prizes. It was really hot, but we had fun! We ended the outing by having pizza for supper.

He enjoys baseball and football. He is in the first grade at Rogers Elementary and plays baseball.

Lodge 246, Morgan’s Point Members Participate in District Two Meeting Dear Fraternal Members, On September 16, 2007, Lodge 246, Morgan’s Point adult and youth members participated in the District Two Fall Meeting held at Lodge 18, Elgin.

In the Christmas Ornament Contest, Angelina Ringwald won first place in ages five to eight category for the youth. In the adult category, Assistant Youth Leader Terri Hagen won first place, and Roy Ringwald won second place.

Both the adult lodge and youth club donated items for the silent auction, cake walks, and spinning wheel

games. The youth also put together a small duck pond game to help with the activities.

Bobby Hagen was presented two awards during the meeting. Bobby received the President’s Volunteer Service Award and the Youth Achievement Award for his service as the previous Lodge 246 Youth Club President.

In Memory of In Memory Geneva Hennessey of Helen Blaschke In memory of a dear friend, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother of seven, great-grandmother of four, a lovely and gracious lady, members of SPJST Lodge 154, Fort Worth express their sincerest sympathy to the family of GENEVA F. HENNESSEY, 92, passed away Saturday, September 8, 2007, in Fort Worth.

Funeral services were held on We d n e s d a y, September 12 at 9:30 a.m. in Greenwood C h a p e l .

Interment was at 3 p.m.

We d n e s d a y, September 8 in Frederick G. Hennessey Cemetery, in Frederick, Oklahoma. Rosary was at 6:30 p.m.

Tuesday, September 11 in Greenwood Garden Chapel.

Geneva was born on August 4, 1915, in Loveland, Oklahoma, to George and Sara Fillmore. She was a very devout Catholic and an active member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church.

She loved unconditionally and was quick-witted with a dry sense of humor.

She was preceded in death by her husband John Richard Hennessey in 1959; son John Michael Hennessey in 1995; four brothers; and one sister.

Survivors include daughter Sondra Cole and husband Bill; son Greg Hennessey and wife Pam; four grandsons; three granddaughters; and four great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to St. Thomas the Apostal Catholic Church, Friendship Club, 2920 Azle Avenue, Fort Worth, Texas 76106.

She will remain a treasure in our memories and will be missed.

Resolution Committee Rose Steinman Anna Johnson Carrie Milan —SPJST—

Helen Joyce Seiders Blaschke, age 76, of Mc Dade, passed away Sunday, September 2, 2007. Mrs. Blaschke was born March 17, 1931, in Austin, to Ottway Weller Seiders and Bessie Pearl Magness.

She was a retired elementary school H. Blaschke teacher and a member of St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church in Paint Creek. She was a member of SPJST Lodge 18, Elgin.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her beloved husband, Andrew Blaschke; daughters Charlotte Horn and Laurey Wolf and husband Steve; brothers Wewller Seiders and Joe Seiders; sister Doris Massey; and grandchildren Matthew, Sam, and Megan.

Visitation was held Wednesday, September 5 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the chapel at Jones Family Funeral Home. Graveside services were held Thursday, September 6 at Oakwood Cemetery in Austin at 2 p.m. with Pastor Willard Rother and Pastor Lee Eschberger officiating.

Born July 5, 1916, in Snook to the late Fannie Martinka and Frank Kulhanek, she married J.W. Edmonson on March 5, 1944, in Brenham. The two moved to Snyder in 1944. He died February 1, 1993.

Mrs. Edmonson was a housewife and had worked at Dryden Shoe Store. She was a member of SPJST Lodge 9, Snook.

She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law Cynthia and James Barham of Gilmer and Wanda and Don Fortune of Corinth; sister Vlasta See of Snook; grandchildren Jereme Fortune of Moore, Casey Fortune of Corinth, Rebecca Gay of Navasota, and Russell Barham of Longview; and great-granddaughter Mallory Fortune of Moore, Oklahoma.

Visitation was from 6 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 4 at the funeral home.

Georgia was born on April 24, 1925, in Granger, Texas, and moved to Corpus Christi in 1950.

She was a former owner of Kubala G. Kubala Pest Control.

Georgia was a loving mother, grandmother, greatgrandmother, and mother-in-law.

She was preceded in death by husband Alphonse Kubala.

She is survived by daughters, Barbara (Raul) Quinones and Pat (Kent) Nielsen; son Louis (Adriana) Kubala, all of Corpus Christi, Texas; sisters Margaret Kaderka of Bartlett, Texas, Lydia Pekar of Granger, Texas; son-in-law Gene Jaksik of Pleasanton, Texas; 14 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Georgia was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, St. Patrick’s Altar and Rosary Society, KJZT, SPJST Lodge 79, Corpus Christi, and Sokol.

Visitation began at 12 noon Wednesday, September 12 at Maxwell P. Dunne Funeral Home with a rosary recited at 7 p.m. that evening. A funeral mass was celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, September 13 at St. Patrick Catholic Church. Burial followed in Memory Gardens Cemetery. Her grandchildren served as pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Brother Terry was born February 21, 1962, in Waco, the only son of Elo H. and Lerno (Kuhn) Green.

Terry graduated from Reicher High School and graduated from TSTI with a degree in drafting. He was employed at Kase Industries in Whitney.

Terry loved the outdoors, fishing, hunting, or just sitting and watching the sun go down. He did not judge nor did he want to be judged. He loved unconditionally. Terry was an SPJST member since January 1978.

Survivors include sisters Bridget Jenkins and husband Bryan of Clifton, Roselyn Henry and husband John of Waco, and Gail Leonard and husband Dennis of Kuna, Idaho; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was born in Davy on February 20, 1926, to Ernest John, Sr. and Lizzie Sophie Slania Pesch. He was a United States Navy Veteran during World War II. Survivors include wife Rosie Pena Pesch of El Campo; brother Alfred Pesch of Victoria; several nephews, great-nephews, and great-great

nieces and nephews; step-daughters Mary Garcia of Bay City, Mamie Nunez of Sweeney, Gloria Sanchez of Deer Park, and Eva Martinez of El Campo; step-son John Sanchez, Jr. of Sweeney; 19 step-grandchildren; and 16 step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and step-son Danny Sanchez.

Visitation was Sunday, July 29 at 11 a.m. at Triska Funeral Home. A rosary was held Sunday, July 29 at 5 p.m. at Triska Funeral Home. The funeral service was Monday, July 30 at 10 a.m. at St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church with the Reverend Bob Fisher officiating. Interment followed at Garden of Memories Cemetery with military honors under the auspices of American Legion Post 251.

Lodge 92 Fort Worth hosts Czech class A beginner’s Czech language class will be offered in Fort Worth starting on Thursday, September 27, 2007.

These classes will be held each

Thursday night for 12 weeks ending on December 20. The class will be from 7 to 9 p.m. at SPJST Lodge 92, Fort Worth’s National Hall, located at 3316 Roberts Cutoff Road in Fort Worth, Texas.

This is a very concentrated course that will cover pronunciation, grammar, reading, and vocabulary. It will

also include presentations on Czech history and culture.

Although designed for beginners, advanced Czech language students will enjoy a good review. Each student will receive printed handouts along with a progressive CD-ROM containing the class presentations for additional home study. Best of all, you grade

Taylor Czech Chorus dedicates CD to 2003 SPJST State Fraternalist Leona Stalmach

The Taylor Czech Chorus recently released its CD titled “Songs of Our Heritage.” The beautifully designed CD features 23 songs including two instrumentals.

The Chorus dedicated the CD to 2003 SPJST State Fraternalist of the Year Leona Maresh Stalmach of Lodge 48, Beyersville who was a charter member of the Taylor Czech Chorus. Leona was very proud of her Czech heritage and loved to listen to and sing the Czech songs.

She actively promoted her Czech heritage throughout this area in various ways from the nursing homes to the public schools. Leona was president and song leader of the Taylor Czech Chorus until her death Pictured, are, front, left to right, Catherine Holubec, Edith Remmel, in 2003.

The Chorus meets for practice on the first Monday of each month at the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home in Taylor.

The group has performed publicly many times in Taylor, Granger, Austin, Waco, Dallas, and local surrounding communities for reunions, anniversaries, special church services, and festivals including the Aqua Festival in Austin, the Kolache Festival in Caldwell, and the State Fair in Dallas.

The Chorus extends thanks to the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home for providing its facilities all these years for practices and performances and to families, friends, and followers for their love and support.

All you need bring is a pencil and a desire to learn a little Czech. How much you learn will be up to you, as you will get plenty of material to study. This is a similar course that has been taught in West, Dallas, and Ennis in the past and has been well received.
