Fraternalism: a year-long event Join Hands Day is a national day of volunteering sponsored by America’s fraternal benefit societies.

This is fraternalism’s day, a day when fraternal benefit societies and volunteer organizations reach out to people or communities in need, connect generations and develop relationships.

Fraternalists “join hands” yearround, because fraternalism is not a one-day-a-year event. However, Join Hands Day provides all fraternalists and non-fraternalists alike with the opportunity to make a difference in their communities through helpful projects that connect youths and adults.

Fraternal benefit societies began nearly 150 years ago, and today have 10 million members in 36,000 local chapters. These not-for-profit organizations improve their communities through volunteer service and charitable outreach, while helping their members achieve financial security through insurance and retirement products.

Join Hands Day is about volunteering with people of a different generation to serve or meet a need in your neighborhood. Leadership and involvement are divided equally between youths and adults in planning and carrying out projects.

Join Hands Day is the only national volunteer day that specifically targets and develops relationships between young people and adults through neighborhood volunteering.

Join Hands Day is a program of the National Fraternal Congress of America (NFCA), a Connect America partner. The 120-year-old NFCA unites 75 not-for-profit fraternal benefit societies operating in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Canada. The association represents almost 10 million people in 36,000 local chapters, making it one of America’s largest

member networks.

Fraternal benefit societies provide their members with leadership, social, educational, spiritual, patriotic, scholarship, financial and volunteer-service opportunities.

Combined, the NFCA’s membersocieties maintain more than $324 billion of life insurance-in-force and, in 2005 alone, contributed almost $400 million to charitable and fraternal programs. In addition, fraternalists volunteered 93 million hours toward community-service projects during that same period.

Join Hands Day is Saturday, May 5. Several SPJST lodges around the state are participating in projects.

See page 7 of this week’s Vestnik for a complete listing of project plans submitted to the SPJST Home Office. All lodges and youth clubs are encouraged to register their projects on the www.joinhandsday.org website. Hats off to Lodge 215, South Plains Youth Leader Janeece Williams whose project is already listed on the website. This helps the JHD organization track the day’s success and also qualifies projects for special awards. Ten outstanding projects throughout the nation will be selected to each receive $1,000 Excellence Awards. Project leaders, please register your project today.

New Electronic Filing Requirements Two new electronic filing requirements for tax-exempt organizations went into effect after December 31, 2006. Lodges will be required to file their Forms 990 electronically.

Lodge leaders will receive notices from the IRS around July 1 regarding the new filing procedures. Please read the notice and follow all of the instructions. Stay tuned to the Vestnik for more information on this matter as it becomes available.

SPJST records 1,283 applications written in Rhythm ’07 campaign Through the end of March, the SPJST had received 1,283 applications for insurance certificates. The goal of the Rhythm ’07 membership drive is 2,777.

In conjunction with SPJST’s Rhythm ’07 program, local lodges have been assigned application goals for the year.

The lodge goal has been based largely on past performance and perceived potential.

The last column, “Youth Club

Application Count,” applies to those lodges with youth clubs and reflects applications written for members between the ages of 0 and 17 through June. “Youth Club” totals are applied toward the lodge’s total goal. The second column, “Lodge Incentive Count,” reflects the number of new certificates issued for the Lodge Recognition and Incentive Program.

SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Donors’ List SPJST’s 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive for 2006-2007 ended on March 31. There have been 623 donations made to this year’s drive.

Donations to date are $7,544.69.

SPJST Memorial donations to date are $4.076. Thank you for your generous donations to the SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive. Because of your generosity, many SPJST members will be able to attend or continue with higher learning.

The new drive will start October 1, 2007, and any donations collected between April and September will go towards the new 2007-2008 SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive.

Guidelines for Giving 1. Donations made by lodges out of lodge funds will be listed as a lodge donation.

2. Collected donations from a lodge meeting will be listed individually by member’s last name in alphabetical order. Individuals submitting a donation will also be listed by member’s last name alphabetically.

3. Gifts of $50 or more will be printed in bold.

4. Families or groups, which desire names, listed under a particular last name or group name should indicate this on the donation form or letter, otherwise, the names will be listed as individual donations by last name in alphabetical order.

5. 100 pennies donations made as a memorial will be listed under memorial donations in a separate listing.

Lodge 17 New Tabor presents April meeting minutes The Lodge 17, New Tabor meeting was called to order by President Randy Gaas at 2 p.m. on April 1, 2007. Vice President Hildebrand secured a list of members present.

The Pledge of Allegiance was said by all.

There were no resolutions at this time. Secretary Trcalek read the minutes from the March 4 meeting. With no corrections to the minutes, they were approved as read. Secretary Trcalek also read correspondence.

Youth Report The youth club participated in the District One skating party. They also had a lock-in and had about 50 in attendance. The youth will participate in an Arbor Day project and a Join Hands Day project on May 5 with the adult lodge. LIT camp will be held the first weekend in June.

Chairman Donnie Victorick conducts the April 16 to 18, 2007, Supreme Lodge meeting with a special gavel made entirely of mesquite wood by Victor Veroda of Lodge 26, Skidmore. The gavel was presented at the last Supreme Lodge meeting held in Fayetteville on July 13, 1953, by SL Treasurer Joseph Koliha, Jr. to SL President Edward L. Marek. The gavel is housed in the SPJST Museum in Temple.

April 14 is the SPJST Car Show at the Bloomin’ Temple Festival; May 12 is the SPJST Three Gun Shooting Tournament; and May 19 is the State Adult and Youth Horseshoe Tournament.

The hall report was given by Mrs. Skrabanek. The report included repairs to the women’s restroom floor and sink. Youth Leader Skrabanek also shared what a good time was had by the youth attending the District One Skating Party. The District One Spring Meeting will be in Dime Box on April 15. Registration begins at 1:30 p.m., and the meeting will begin at 2 p.m. Mrs. Skrabanek will resign as our New Tabor Youth Leader at the close of the day on May 31.

Under old business, we discussed the Texas Workforce reports which are pending. We also finalized plans for the 50-year pin reception.

Individuals will be recognized at the May 6 meeting.

With no further business, the meeting was adjourned.

Lodge 18, Elgin welcomes meeting guests The March meeting was opened

by President Ray with the Pledge of Allegiance and silent prayer for all members and our Armed Forces. The roll call had all officers present. We had two guests—Brenda and Ann from the Elgin Depot Museum. They were asking for volunteers to help at the Depot. There are many interesting historical articles at the Depot.

We were encouraged to set up a Czech display. We will be thinking about this.

Shirlene read the minutes, and Teresa gave the treasurer’s report.

Joyce gave the youth report. They sold hamburgers, chicken salad sandwiches, and kolaches at the Don Peachey dance. The Easter egg hunt will be held March 31 so that the youth will be able to attend the Easter Eggstravaganza in Temple. Join Hands Day is coming up. We are encouraging as many as can to participate. This is a very good incentive

SPJST Supreme Lodge Contributes Lodge 25, Ennis to LAM Golf Tournament plans May 5 fund-raiser

We are getting bids to replace the carpeting on the stage and the entrance.

We are looking for someone to help with the lawn care. For many years, we had volunteers like Arthur, Alvin, Ruben, Oscar, and Walter. Now, Charles and Johnny have been doing the lawn with all the other responsibilities. We really do need more helpers.

The youth were praised for the hamburgers which were very good.

Thanks to Loretta and Irene who baked the kolaches. Johnny and Irene donated the chicken salad sandwiches. Thanks, everyone!

Charles gave the bar report. He thanked Sam, Alice, Glenward, Ray, Matt, Jim, Katie, Evelyn, Johnny, and Irene (Charles was there leading the pack for cleaning the hall after a rental). There was a mix up and cleaning crew did not clean the hall.

So all those great people pitched in and had the hall clean for the Sunday dance.

Glenward, Shirlene, Johnny, Irene, and Ray attended the awards banquet. We received the First Step award. We really can do better than that. Let’s all work on that.

Things work out best for those who make the best of the way things work out.

Lodge 29, Taylor presents April meeting minutes At 6:30 p.m., President Ronnie Rieger called the Wednesday, April 11, 2007, Lodge 29, Taylor meeting to order by leading the Pledge of Allegiance. Officer roll call showed Edmond Tate absent. The March minutes were read and approved.

Tammy Whatley gave the treasurer’s report. Donna Pasemann discussed the District Two Spring Meeting in Seaton. Lyn Curry was elected District Two Treasurer at the meeting. Dan Balusek retired as the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home Director, and Howard Leshikar was elected to fill the position. We had a wonderful meal of fajitas. Lifetime Achiever awards were presented to five of our members. They include Ronnie Rieger, Jesse Pospisil, Alice Schwenke, Bobby Eulenfeld, and LaVerne Eulenfeld.

Norris and Ruby Schroeder, Margie Faltysek, and Erwin Meiske represented Lodge 29 at the State 42 Domino Tournament.

Tickets for our May 6 Fish Fry Lunch are on sale. Bobby and LaVerne Eulenfeld have the tickets if you would like to sell some of them.

The number of ticket sales needs to be turned in to Bobby and LaVerne by Wednesday, May 2 in order to get a head count for purchasing food and supplies for the meal on Sunday.

Lodge 29 is participating in Join Hands Day on May 5. The adult members and youth club will be joining hands with the Taylor Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS) to support the Taylor Pregnancy Resource Center (PRC) by having a diaper and wipes drive for needy families of infants in our community. A money donation was taken up at the meeting, and the members were asked to bring their diapers or wipes contribution to the hall by 9 a.m. on Saturday May 5 so we can deliver all of our donations to the PRC. Ronnie read a letter from Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek for our participation in Join Hands Day.

Rhonda Stover Receives Million Dollar Producer Award District One State Field Representative Bill Orsak presents the 2006 Million Dollar Producer award to Rhonda Stover of Lodge 188, Centerville. The presentation was made at FBC Insurance in Franklin, Texas.

Keep Taylor Beautiful (KTB) presented an award of recognition for outstanding support and service in the fraternal category to SPJST Lodge 29, Taylor. We will be working with them again this year during the barbecue cook-off on recycling efforts.

On Wednesday, April 18, there will be a reception honoring Dorothy Pechal, who is retiring as the SPJST Museum Curator. It will be from 2 to 4 p.m. at the SPJST Home Office in Temple. Frank Klinkovsky will be taking over some of Mrs. Pechal’s duties on a part-time basis.

On Saturday, May 5, workers for the fish fry lunch are asked to be at the hall at 9 a.m. to make preparations for the next day. On Sunday, workers are asked to be at the hall starting at 7 a.m.

Members are asked to bring homemade desserts to sell. Profits from the desserts will go to the youth club.

Cristy Girod, the new youth leader, reported that they will have a Meet and Greet Social on Sunday, April 22 from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Taylor lodge hall. You don’t have to be an SPJST member to attend the social. This is an opportunity to learn about the SPJST Youth Program and see if this is something you want to be a part of.

There will be door prizes, games, and refreshments. Friends and parents are welcome, too. The youth club will be selling Home Interior candles at the May 6 Fish Fry Lunch as a fund-raiser. Since it will be a week before Mother’s Day, and it is nearing the end of school, a candle would be a great gift for mothers and teachers.

State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Chester Jenke and his wife, Colleen, were special guests at our meeting. Chester passed on his encouragement to the youth club. He also congratulated Lodge 29 for participating in Join Hands Day and to

Youth Leader Debbie Sczech gave her report. The youth club made sun visors. Thanks to Jerri Gensler for providing bubbles for outside entertainment.

Communication Kim Vanek would like a donation for MS. She will be participating in a bike ride from Houston to Austin on April 21 and 22.

Sarah Sless would like a donation for the breast cancer fund-raiser. She will be walking 60 miles on October 26 and 27.

Acknowledgments were received from the families of Hattie Zacek and Loretta Jaks for the memorial donations and from the SPJST District Six Cemetery organization for the $150 gift.

Cemetery report—Vlasta Bartos reported that the SPJST Velehrad Cemetery will have the dedication of the historic marker on April 21 at 10:30 a.m. on Countyline Road in Lavaca County. Everyone is invited.

Bingo report—Sheldon gave the report. The average attendance is 172.

Old Business Under old business, the floor work was discussed. Sheldon took bids, and EC Carpet One got the bid to tile two restrooms, foyer, two offices, snack bar, and kitchen area. Work has begun.

Carmen Kocurek reported that 14 brown tables were sold and 16 new tables were purchased. We have 16

gospel music.

The residents expressed their enjoyment and invited him back at another time.

Lodge officers met April 15 after the regular meeting to select scholarship recipients for 2007. They named 25 recipients at $350 each. Names will be published next month.

Officers also voted to give donations to the MS Society Bike Ride and to the Breast Cancer Walk.

Lodge 48 Beyersville: park outing June 14 Lodge 48, Beyersville members are encouraged to attend a Round Rock Express game on June 14. That is on a Thursday, and there will be fireworks after the game. The hall will pay for tickets for members of Lodge 48, but RSVP to Bonnie or Ruth as soon as possible for reservations. We will have to know by the next meeting.

Next Meeting—May 14 Our next meeting will be held on May 14. This is a Monday night. We will meet at the hall.

The activities committee is looking into going to Enchanted Springs Ranch later this fall. So be sure and come to the meetings to get more information.

We might go to the Renaissance Festival as well, but you won’t know if you don’t attend meetings!

We are asking that all members submit lists of persons and businesses responsible for assisting in our remodeling efforts. Please get these to Robert Leshikar or any lodge officer.

Lodge 80, Holland to join hands with chamber of commerce SPJST Lodge 80, Holland was called to order by President Doni Powell on Saturday, April 14, 2007, at 4:05 p.m. The membership stood for the Pledge of Allegiance, and a moment of silence for the departed members.

Secretary Linda Hill and Youth Leader Kristi Davis were absent.

Rita Spinn read the minutes of the March meeting, and they were approved as read.

Treasurer Jewel Wolf gave the financial report. Thank yous were read from the Holland Area Chamber of Commerce and Estelle Coker.

A request for a donation from the Holland Corn Festival 5K Walk/Run was read. The membership moved to give $100 to this cause. From the Holland ISD, a request was received for a scholarship donation. The membership agreed to this.

FAC Paula Weir reported the SPJST State Horseshoe Tournament is at Lions Park in Temple is May 19.

Three new members were voted in by the membership.

Lodge 80 will join hands with the Holland Area Chamber of Commerce Garage Sale on May 5. Barbara Taisler Hill will be the contact person for renting a table at Lodge 80.

Tables to be rented will be $5 each.

President Powell stated Lodge 80 will sponsor a bingo training session on November 3, beginning at 10 a.m.

Dustin Weir has agreed to mow the Lodge 80 grounds.

Lodge 88, Houston Lodge 29, Taylor Members presents April Receive Lifetime Acheiver Awards meeting minutes The April meeting began promptly at 7:30 p.m. with President Patricia Bruce presiding. Brother Sydney Jurchak gave the invocation, and the Pledge of Allegiance was recited. The roll call of officers revealed the absence of Sergeant-at-Arms Johnny Broz and Parliamentarian Mildred Holeman.

The minutes of the previous meeting as well as the March financial report were read and approved.

President Bruce said that paperwork was being prepared and filed attempting again to secure a property tax exemption. First Vice President Helen Hegwood welcomed guests and reported on the success of the Easter egg hunt. Second Vice President Sherry Miller asked for information which could be included in letters to the Vestnik.

FAC Esther Heinsohn reported the receipt of $100 for participation in Join Hands Day. She asked for $1 from each of us to help defray additional costs for that endeavor. Have you made your contribution? She asked for all members and committees to turn in hours worked for her FAC report.

Youth Leader Barbara Gonzalez was very pleased with the attendance at the Easter egg celebration, even though it rained. This was her 18th year of preparation for the occasion.

YAD will be at Lodge 88 on July 1.

Plans are underway for an outing by the youth on Saturday, April 21. The SPJST Float will again be on hand for the Strawberry Festival Parade in Pasadena on May 12.

Johnny Broz was Susan Broz who reported the availability of six door prizes for distribution at the close of the meeting.

Chairman of the Entertainment Committee Sister Betty Theiss reported nice attendance at the recent dances featuring polka bands and encouraged us all to keep on dancing.

In the absence of Social Night Chairman Mildred Holeman, President Bruce thanked her committee for its continued works.

Sister Carol Havemann, Chairman of the Scholarship Committee, reported that four applicants have qualified for Lodge 88 scholarships. She moved that they be approved for $500 each. The motion carried. Sister Lowrina Lindemann reported that the Birthday Club Sisters will have sandwiches, potato salad, and other side dishes at its next meeting.

Dorothy and Larry W. Pflughaupt have agreed to again prepare the meal for the Workers Party on September 16 to cut costs.

President Bruce introduced Brother Ricardo Peralta, a new member to Lodge 88 and also the District Five State Field Representative. As an introduction, he gave a brief history of his previous work experience.

Brother Larry W. Pflughaupt, our District Five Director, awarded the Lifetime Achiever award to Edna Wehring and an officer’s Leadership Medal to Secretary Marceil Malak.

Sister Carolyn Beseda, District Five President, reported on the District Five Spring Meeting in Needville on March 17. Lifetime Achiever awards were presented to Josephine Pflughaupt, Lowrina Lindemann, Margie Anders, and Barbara Gonzalez. District Five voted to send $500 to the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum (LAM) and $500 to the SPJST Education and Nature Center (ENC). New officers are President Carolyn Beseda; Vice President Patricia Bruce; Second Vice President Mary Granberry; and Treasurer Catherine Manchack. The

Kraslice Easter Egg Decorating Contest winner was Allison Wockenfuss. The next District Five Spring Meeting will be September 15.

Members who were reported ill are Johnny Broz, Mildred Holeman, Ana Latigo, Ora Nell Hassebrock, Josephine Buri, Bennie Kocich, and Georgie Buchanan. Please remember these members in your prayers.

Fifty-year pin recipients who attended to receive their pins were Bertha Smothers, Dorothy Ulbrich, Vernon Meazle, Jeanette Bender, and Richard Alan Martinak. Sister Helen Hegwood presented the pins, and photos were taken. Following the meeting, a cake was served in honor of these long-time members.

Branson is the son of Kevin and Crystal Greger and the grandson of Heidi Bartek and William Bartek, both of Temple, and Eugene and Pat Greger of Granger. His great-grandparents are Margaret Vrana of Granger and Frank Lange of Temple.

Branson was welcomed home by his sister, Kaylin Charlotte Greger, who is 21 months old.

Lodge 49, Rowena Gives Books to Central Texas Opportunities Headstart Program Submitted by Lodge 49, Rowena President Beverly Teplicek The children of Texas come in all sizes, shapes, colors, and abilities.

They do not all learn the same way, but they all learn. With this in mind, the SPJST Lodge 49, Rowena mem-

bers collected story books for the Centcral Texas Opportunities Headstart Program in Ballinger. Ms. Camille Denton is the Lead TeacherCenter Supervisor. Ms. Denton is

assisted by Annabelle Guerra coteacher. There are approximately 20 children, ranging in age from three to five years, enrolled in this program in Ballinger.

Lodge 187 Round Rock meets May 6 At our April, 2007, meeting, we were pleased to have State FAC Chester Jenke and wife, Colleen, as our guests.

At our meeting, we discussed collecting Little Golden Books. Chester told us that they would take other kinds of childrens’ books as well as the Little Golden books. Members, bring what you have and also any adult books.

JoAnn Oman also brought up that the Hutto Pantry could use some help with canned goods and other things.

So members, bring what you can to the next meeting.

Since the second Sunday falls on Mother’s Day, we will meet the first Sunday, which is May 6. See you there!

Birthday Club Sisters of Lodge 88, Houston The Wednesday, April 11, 2007, meeting started at 11 a.m. by President Zajicek.

The president had Ernest Anders repeat the Pledge of Allegiance, and Helen Hegwood had a prayer for our meeting and the boys in the service.

Secretary Bette Hurta had the roll call with 13 present. Secretary Hurta then read the minutes from the March meeting and passed.

President Zajicek asked for May cooks. I guess we won’t have cooks because we will have sandwiches.

VĚSTNÍK The ladies who are making sandwiches are Willie Mae Pechacek, Louise Jacobs, Almeida Bravenec, Lowrina Lindemann, Margie Anders will bring potato salad, and Flo Orsag will bring chips.

The president asked for cake bakers, and they are Edna Wehring, Willie Mae Pechacek, and Mary Krippner.

Ticket Chairman Bessie Dewer said the table looks nice. She said thank you.

Treasurer Lowrina Lindemann gave her report.

Sick members are Julie Kinnamon and Georgie Buchanan. Georgie had a stroke, but she is doing good. Mary Kosut is under the weather. Ladies, call these ladies. It will make them

feel better.

Under new business, we talked about a silent auction for Homecoming Day on June 3. Helen Hegwood is working on a trip. Also, Helen Hegwood will be our secretary when Bette Hurta leaves. I sure hate to see Bette leave. She has been such a good secretary, but I wish her luck.

They are moving to Taylor, Texas.

Royal and Laura Warnasch have both passed away so a scholarship fund donation will be sent to the committee.

Calcutta was won by Margie Anders, Louise Jacob, and Bette Hurta.

Birthdays celebrated in April were Almeida Bravenec, and Helen Hegwood.

Helen Hegwood said our prayer for the meal, and we ate.

Krouzek Ceskych Zen—Dallas Circle of Czech Women President Bertha Podhrasky called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited.

Bertha welcomed 17 members, three men, and a special guest, Maria Slamova, and her son, Karel. She is the tour guide of Bertha and Esther when they visit the Czech Republic.

We also had Lydia Andrews, who is Helen Oates’ caregiver. We were happy they could be here.

Bessie Tydlaska brought a beauti-

ful Easter egg decorated by Frantiska Polackova Archlebov of the Czech Republic to be used as a door prize.

The lucky winner was Martha Frnka.

Our sign-in table was decorated with Easter bunnies and flowers Thanks to Jeraldine Becan.

Thanks to all who brought flowers. Carolyn had a vase of different

colored irises. Bertha had some spring flowers, and Esther had roses.

It looked like spring. They grew the flowers in their yards; they have a green thumb.

Recording Secretary Evelyn Trojacek was absent. Evelyn Cechan gave a report from Evelyn Trojacek, and she said to tell everyone hello.

She hopes to be back next month.

Membership Chairman Carole Faraizl reported that she sent out 55 dues reminders. She said we have 29 members who have paid their dues.

Carole gave her resignation of the committee. We need someone to replace her.

Sunshine Committee Joyce Moore sent 22 Easter cards to shut-ins. The members signed thinking of you cards for Rosie Julius and Evelyn Trojacek. We hope they will recover and return soon.

Bessie Tydlaska read the birthdays for April. We had two “Queens for a Day”—Helen Oates and Carolyn Nemec. They wore crowns and blew out the candles. “Happy Birthday”

Lodge 91, Crosby presents scholarship

Ryan Franta Ryan Franta of Crosby was awarded the SPJST Lodge 91, Crosby $500 scholarship. He is the son of LeaAnn and Randy Franta and the grandson of Alvin Franta and Leroy and Joan Danek, all of Crosby.

Ryan is a graduate of Crosby High School. He will be attending Texas A&M University as a Mechanical Engineering student.

The officers of Lodge 91 congratulate Mr. Franta and wish him much luck in his future endeavors.

Fort Worth Friendship Club The Friendship Club met Wednesday, April 4, 2007, at St. Thomas Parish Hall with 44 members present. We had two guests who were Whit, Mary Schneider’s handsome young grandson, and Fran, friend to Alice. President Alice Barnes called the meeting to order, welcomed everyone, and thanked Joe Kozel for providing the wonderful accordion music before the meeting.

who was in the hospital last month.

We were so glad to see Lois at the meeting, and we are so glad she is doing so well.

Lydia Alholm thanked everyone for all the cards, phone calls, and prayers she received during her knee surgery.

She further reported that Roy is doing great and looks good.

Ima Lou Crider stated she had been in the hospital. It was so nice to see her back with us at the meeting.

Rosie Steinman reported on her granddaughter, Jill Parker, who ran the marathon in the Antarctica. She started the race with a 58-year-young lady.

This was the second completion for this lady to run the marathon on all seven continents. Representation from The Guinness Book of Records was there to interview this lady, and since Jill witnessed this lady making the run, her name will also appear in

Annie Whitsell stated we would be having our little gift exchange in May, and a bake or bakeless sale was discussed. It was voted to have the sale in June, and all members are asked to either bring a cake for sale or make a cash donation.

I discussed the membership booklet that I have been working on and discussed the completion, printing, and available funds. Treasurer Mary Ann reviewed our annual income and expenses. Thereafter, Faith Lindeau volunteered to print the booklets on her computer.

How wonderful!

President Alice stated that our meeting date falls on July 4.

Therefore, it was voted to meet on the second Wednesday of July. This is also our dining out social. Following discussion, it was voted to go back to Ryan’s Steakhouse on Cherry Lane.

Alice will make the reservations.

Our hostesses for the month were Irene Green, Faith Lindeau, Pat McWilliams, and Lois Smith. They did a super great job. Naturally, the theme for the meeting was Easter.

Rose Ann read about the origin of the egg and gave each member an Easter egg with a few of the eggs having a “winner” note inside. They received a special Easter prize. In addition, we had several door prizes which were brought by Anna Johnson, Lois Smith, and Annie Whitsell. Then, some of the table items were also given away.

There were too many winners. I didn’t get all of their names, but congratulations to all of you who won something.

President Alice thanked the hostesses for the decorations and reminded everyone that it is not necessary to decorate. Rose Ann said she likes decorations and volunteered to be the decorator. She said she has lots of things at home she can use, and this will not be an expense for the hostesses or the Club. Thanks, Rose Ann. This was a month in which the Club supports the St. Thomas Food Pantry, and Alice called that 289 items were brought. With the $13 cash donated, she purchased 80 cans of vegetables. According to my calculations, that is 16 1/4 cents per can. I think we need to find out where Alice shops as she always comes up with lots of good buys.

Hostesses for May will be Joe Kozel, Betty Krenek, and Betty Landsfeld.

News Willie Mae Becan’s daughter, Jennifer, and husband Dan Miller spent spring break in Reggio Emilia, Italy, with 17 high school students and three college students from schools in the Fort Worth area. The students were chosen to be youth ambassadors as part of the Fort Worth Sister Cities program. During their stay in Italy, the students lived with Italian families.

The group spent a day in Venice and a day in Florence. While they were in Reggio Emilia, they performed community service in a public school and attended cooking class. The program is designed to promote international understanding. Jennifer represented Carter Riverside High School where she teaches Russian, French, and Latin. What a lovely experience!

Lil Kosarek enjoyed her one day trip with the Leisure Club of Arlington to Pittsburgh in Texas—not

Pennsylvania. They visited the museum where the Ezekil Air Ship is housed which is the first plane to fly in a test flight in 1902. They also visited the Farmstead Museum which is a 100-year-old farm with house, smoke house, blacksmith shop, and still has a working windmill. Also on the tour was a visit to the First United Methodist Church which was built in 1904 and has a Barckhoff Pipe Organ which Lil said was beautiful. The church had lovely stained glass windows. I asked if maybe some of the John Kebrle’s of Dallas perhaps made the windows, but she didn’t know.

But then, 1904 may be before their time. They saw the home of Bo Pilgrim and Pilgrim’s Pride Chicken, but they didn’t get to visit inside nor were they served any chicken. It seems the Mayor of Pittsburgh met them on the outskirts of town, and they had a police escort into town with a special sign welcoming them. Lil said the town treated them royally.

Mary Ann and Joe Kozel spent a

long Easter weekend in Houston with daughter Donna and husband Charles Camp, and little granddaughter Zoie must be very special as Mary Ann said she sure enjoyed the visit with her.

Thanks go out to Anna Marie, Bill and Patrick Moncrief for inviting Aggie Reznicek, Betty Landsfeld, Sharron Connelly, Rita Thomas, Betty and Stanley Krenek, Lil Kosarek, Rose Ann Spann, and myself to attend the “Divine Affair,” a tribute to the USO in support of the Discalced Carmelite Nuns. It was a great musical revue in which all the Catholic churches in Tarrant County presented a number and even Bishop Kevin Vann performed on the piano.

Fort Worth has been enjoying our recent rains, but we can do without the high winds, hail, and tornados. I hope none of you suffered any damage.

The next meeting will be on May 2.

If there’s confrontation or if there’s a fight she wins on ferocity her barks worse than her bite!

She misses nothing in my opinion she’s all about guarding her master’s dominion!

If it’s cats or dogs a squirrel or a rabbit she’ll run it off it’s her rascally habit!

Then give her a treat or some table scrap and the next thing you know she’s there in your lap!

She’ll curl up and snuggle and soon you’ll discover

Thanks for Helping with the LAM Challenge Grant Drive Golf Tournament to Benefit SPJST LAM “White Stone Golf Club will be the host for a four-man scramble golf tournament on Saturday, April 28 to benefit SPJST Library, Archives and Museum (LAM),” announced LAM Board President Jerry Milan.

Shotgun start will be at 1 p.m. with a putting contest at 12 noon. The putting contest will include prizes for closest to the pin, longest drive, and hole-in-one.

A challenge grant has been offered to the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum for $200,000 if another $400,000 can be raised to match it,

and proceeds from the tournament will benefit the challenge fund.

Entry fees of $65 per person, or $240 for a four-man team, will include green fees, cart fees, range balls, and dinner.

In Memoriam In Memory of Helen Holford

Expression of Sympathy

Helen Kubala Holford died on February 28, 2007, in Fort Worth, Texas, at the age of 74 years. She was born in Granger, Texas, on August 18, 1932, to Rudolph and Emilie Kubala.

Helen was a member of SPJST Lodge 154, Fort Worth.

She retired from Helen Holford the Fort Worth Independent School District, and she worked at Lodge 92 tending the bar for many years for polka dances and ballroom dancing.

She was preceded in death by husband Robert Holford in 2001; parents; and brother Emil Kubala.

Helen and Robert had three children, David Holford, Deborah Wood, and Dayna George, and three grandchildren, Bobby Holford, Christy Holford, and Kaylee George.

Helen is survived by her children and grandchildren; sisters Martha Janca, Hermina Muse, Albina Henson, and Bernice Janecka; sisters-in-law Albina Kubala and Marcella Phelps; and many nieces and nephews.

We all miss Helen very much and pray that she rests in peace.

Oleta was preceded in death by her husband, Louis Hanus.

She is survived by her nephew Jackie Garrett of Warren, Arkansas, and niece Anette Sebesta of Snook, Texas.

Visitation was from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 20 at Pat H. Foley Funeral Directors. A graveside service was held at 10:30 a.m.

Wednesday, March 21 at Brookside Memorial Park.

In Memory of Milton Gallagher Retired Judge Milton Claire Gallagher died at 9:40 a.m. on March 15, 2007 at Charleton Methodist Hospital.

He was born on September 29, 1929 in Ennis, Texas, the son of Claude M. and Lockie Basha Burris Gallagher, Sr. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Louise Gallagher Thompson and husband John Dee Thompson, Claudia Juanita Gallagher Parker and husband Noble Parker; and brother Claude M. Gallagher, Jr. and wife Marie.

Judge Gallagher attended Ennis Public Schools and graduated from St. John High School in 1946. In December, 1946 he enlisted in the United States Army, receiving eight weeks Infantry Training and 16 weeks Armor Training at Fort Knox Kentucky, subsequently being assigned to the 716th M.P. BN, Fort Dix New Jersey where he was a Personnel Administrator, and a Military Policeman.

He also served as a member of the 716th M.P. BN, Burial Honor Guard, providing military burial services for World War II dead brought home to New Jersey. He attended a 12-week Military Administrator Course and later an eight-week Military Police and Criminal Investigation school.

In October 1950, he was assigned to the 59th M.P. Company and was transferred to North Korea, landing in Hungnam.

He completed 18 months war-time service in North and South Korea returning to the United States in May 1952. He married his childhood sweetheart Eleanor Elizabeth (Elaine) Miller on June, 1952.

He was then assigned to the ROTC Instructor Staff at Tarleton State College in Stephenville, Texas for two years when his son, Michael, was born. He was next assigned to the 850th Aviation engineer Battalion at Merignac Air Force Base in France, as Battalion Sgt. Major in December 1954, accompanied by his wife Elaine and son Michael.

They lived in the French farm community of Gradignan where they were blessed with two sons born in France, John and Robert. Upon completion of a three-year tour, he was assigned to the Adjunct General’s Corp., as a Personnel Administrator for six years at Fort Hood, Texas, where their daughter, Kathleen, was born.

He was next assigned to the 6th BN., 40th Artillery, as a First Sgt. Hanau, Germany for three years.

Their son Kevin was born in Germany during this tour.

His last assignment was at Artillery Officer Candidate School at Fort Sill Oklahoma, from which he retired on October 1, 1967 after 21

years of military service.

For four years after retirement, he worked as a police officer for the Ennis Police Department. In 1974, Milton ran for Justice of the Peace of the local precinct, was successful in his election bid and was re-elected four times. He retired from office April 1993 with 19 1/2 years in office.

Milton was an American patriot and died as an American patriot; with deep love for his country and his fellow countrymen.

His biggest loves were his family and his belief in Christianity and his love of his country. Milton was a member of SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis; St. John Catholic Church; North Texas JP and Constable Association; VFW; Knights of Columbus; American Legion; Sokol; and Ellis Co. Sheriff Association.

Milton is survived by his wife of 55 years, Elaine; sons Michael and wife Susanne, John and wife Debbie, and Robert and wife Jayne; daughter Kathleen; son Kevin; grandchildren Crystal Gallagher Edgel, John Gallagher, Jr., Jennifer Gallagher, Robert Gallagher, Jr., Stephanie Prachyl Manion, Jessica Prachyl, Andrew Prachyl, and Daniel; stepgrandson Andrew Novak; stepgranddaughters Sharon and Suzanne Hamala; and great-grandchildren Jordan, Joseph, Avary, Zachary, Nicholas, Benjamin, Ava, and Lilly.

In memory of Brother Gallagher, a memorial has been made by Lodge 25, Ennis to the SPJST Scholarship Fund.

On Sunday, my mother and I will drive down to Kingsville where I will attend my freshman orientation.

Then, Thursday, April 26 will be my last FFA meeting/banquet. I will be turning over my position to the newly elected treasurer.

As with all graduating seniors, we will be closing chapters and opening new ones in our book of life. We will be saying good bye to old friends and meeting new ones.

Thank you, SPJST, for being one of my favorite chapters.

Lodge 25, Ennis youth: yummy birthday cake Dear Vestnik Friends, I went to the April SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis Youth Club meeting. It was a lot of fun. I got to drink a cold drink.

I played ping pong with mom, dad, and sister.

We ate a yummy birthday cake. It was decorated with a big bunny on it.

The cake had green coconut and jelly beans on it, too.

There were cupcakes with yellow marshmallow ducks, green coconut, and jelly beans on them with white

VĚSTNÍK frosting. Mommy brought chocolate chip cookies to the party—my favorite kind!

We had an Easter egg hunt. I got 27 eggs. Misty, my sister, got 12 eggs.

There were three prize eggs, but I didn’t get any. But, I did get some Easter eggs with money in them.

Ms. Donna reminded us that we have Join Hands Day on May 5 at Wal-Mart in Taylor. This will help the food pantry. I hope that all of the members in our area can help.

Our friends at the Taylor Youth Club are also helping a great charity.

They are collecting diapers and other baby items. You should help them, too, if you can. There are a lot of babies who need the items. Please talk to the Taylor Youth Leader, Ms. Cristy Girod, if you can assist. They might even need help picking up items.

Lodge 25, Ennis youth: March meeting fun Dear Readers, We had our March meeting, and it was fun. We got to watch the Egg lady make Easter eggs with wax and dye. That was really neat. I want to try that some day. After we watched her, she gave all of us an egg that she made herself.

We also played a game with Cheese puffs and hula hoops. After the game and snacks, we got to play with the hula hoops.

I can’t wait until summer.

Lodge 88, Houston Youth Club reports on Easter party success Dear Members, Lodge 88, Houston celebrated Easter even though we had bad weather on Saturday, March 31, 2007. The ground was soaked, and it was a real mess. But, thanks to the quick thinking of our youth leader, we had a back- up plan.

This year, we all hunted eggs inside the old blue room and the old youth room. It was rather hard in the old youth room since there were so many items in there from different events, but that was just the challenge that we needed.

After each age group was finished, we went to visit the Easter Bunny, and we received a plastic egg with a number in it. Then, we turned the number in for our prize. The Bunny also gave us treats.

We all enjoyed the refreshments. We had a raffle for three different items, and of course, the jelly bean guessing contest.

There were approximately 88 members, guests, and friends who enjoyed the day. Thank you to the Board of Lodge 88 for sponsoring the event again this year.

Lodge 239, Hondo Youth Club plans Join Hands Day project

The Lodge 186, Caldwell Youth Club meeting has been moved to Saturday, May 12. We will start at 11 a.m. with the election of officers.

Following the meeting, we will be having a picnic with hamburgers and all the fix-ins. All mothers of the youth are invited to join us for lunch.

Lodge 239, Hondo Youth Club makes cards Dear Youth Members, Lodge 239, Hondo Youth Club had its monthly meeting on April 15, 2007. We did Mother’s Day cards for the nursing home here in Hondo.

I would like to invite all youth members to join us on May 5 for Join Hands Day at the Hondo Cemetery.

We will meet there at 9:30 a.m.

We will also have a meeting afterwards to elect officers and to plan next month’s meeting.

Each year, the SPJST sponsors a Flag Day Contest to promote patriotism and creative writing.

Who Can Enter?

All SPJST members age six to high school senior. Youth club membership is not required.

2007 Theme “Patriotism and What It Means to Me.” Grand Prize Award $150 Academy gift certificate and winning entry will be submitted for publication in the Vestnik.

Runner - Up Prizes Ages 6 to 8 $50 Academy Gift Certificate Ages 9 to 11 $50 Academy Gift Certificate Ages 12 to 14 $50 U.S. Academy Gift Certificate Ages 15 to High School Senior $50 U.S. Academy Gift Certificate Participation Awards All participants will receive a participation certificate. Youth club members will also receive 20 merit points in the Merit Point System.

Judging Entries will be judged by a panel of writing specialists. Judging is based on the entry’s creativity, grammar and neatness.

The Rules Write Flag Day essay or poem with the theme

“Patriotism and What It Means to Me” in mind.

Essay length must be between 150 to 500 words.

Entries must be typed.

Entries must be original and created by the youth member.

Entries become the property of the SPJST and will not be returned.
