155,820 Czechs in Texas

omething really cool happened recently. I received an email Saturday evening from Lodge 17, New Tabor member Edwin Hlavaty asking if I had information on the number of Czechs in Texas and the United States. Then, on Monday morning, I coincidentally received this information in the mail from Jerry Elzner of Lodge 79, Corpus Christi. Isn’t that great!

Total Population of Czechs in U.S. 1,262,249 (614,286 males; 647,963 females) Average Age: 39 Total Population of Czechs in Texas 155,820 (75,670 males; 80,150 females) Average Age: 38 The facts are from the 2000 Census. Jerry found these facts on the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Fact Finder Web site http://factfinder.census.gov. The Web site contains much information about populations for race, ethnic or ancestry groups, people, housing, and business/government. The information is broken down into many categories. Under the race, ethnic or ancestry groups, you can choose from many different selections. You can also obtain, for example, the number of Czechs in any city or county. I learned that there are 3,801 Czechs in Bell County, which is home to the SPJST Home Office.

Here are a few more items from the site. Of the 155,820 Czechs in Texas, 9,283 are under five years old; 118,057 are 18 years and over; and 19,546 are 65 years and over.

The average household size is two,

and the average family size is three.

The Czech population 25 years and over is 103,755. Of those, 91,023 are high school graduates or higher; 31,550 have bachelor’s degrees or higher.

Other facts include 1,695 are foreign born, and 12,823 speak a language other than English at home (population 5 years and over). Of the population 16 years and over, 85,446 are in labor force. The mean travel time to work for workers 16 years and over is 25 minutes.

Spring Break Visitors It’s always wonderful when members visit the SPJST Home Office. Last week was Spring Break, and several people chose to spend part of their time touring the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum. One family to visit Temple and the Home Office was the Malotas from the Houston area.

I really enjoyed meeting Rosie Malota, her daughter Margie Stockman and her son Kenneth Malota. Accompanying them were Kenneth’s beautiful young daughters, Jacqueline and Brianna, and Mary Wunderlich, Rosie’s sister.

Home Office Expansion Update The Temple area received several inches of much-needed rain last week—but that delayed the Home Office expansion. The concrete was scheduled to be poured but was postponed. Hopefully, we’ll soon see the concrete foundation and the walls going up. We’re excited and looking forward to seeing progress.

Through the end of February, the SPJST had received 817 applications for insurance certificates. The goal of the Rhythm ’07 membership drive is 2,777.

In conjunction with SPJST’s Rhythm ’07 program, local lodges have been assigned application goals for the year.

The lodge goal has been based largely on past performance and perceived potential.

SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Donors’ List

SPJST’s 100 Pennies Scholarship

Fund Drive for 2006-2007 began on October 1. There have been 485 donations made to this year’s drive.

Donations to date are $5,520.19.

SPJST Memorial donations to date are $3,700. Thank you for your generous donations to the SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive. Because of your generosity, many SPJST members will be able to attend or continue with higher learning.

Our goal is set for $19,000. We are looking forward to your support in achieving this goal.

Guidelines for Giving 1. Donations made by lodges out of lodge funds will be listed as a lodge donation.

2. Collected donations from a lodge meeting will be listed individually by member’s last name in alphabetical order. Individuals submitting a donation will also be listed by member’s last name alphabetically.

3. Gifts of $50 or more will be printed in bold.

4. Families or groups, which desire names, listed under a particular last name or group name should indicate this on the donation form or letter, otherwise, the names will be listed as individual donations by last name in alphabetical order.

5. 100 pennies donations made as a memorial will be listed under memorial donations in a separate listing.

Golf Tournament to Benefit SPJST LAM “White Stone Golf Club will be the host for a four-man scramble golf tournament on Saturday, April 28 to benefit SPJST Library, Archives and Museum (LAM),” announced LAM Board President Jerry Milan.

Shotgun start will be at 1 p.m. with a putting contest at 12 noon. The putting contest will include prizes for closest to the pin, longest drive, and hole-in-one.

A challenge grant has been offered to the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum for $200,000 if another $400,000 can be raised to match it,

and proceeds from the tournament will benefit the challenge fund.

Entry fees of $65 per person, or $240 for a four-man team, will include green fees, cart fees, range balls, and dinner.

SPJST Velehrad Cemetery Receives Historical Marker

The Texas Historical Commission has awarded a Historic Texas Cemetery Marker to the SPJST Velehrad Cemetery. The dedication ceremony will take place on April 21, 2007, at 10:30 a.m. This cemetery is located in Lavaca County on County Line Road in the Velehrad Community.

The SPJST Velehrad Cemetery was originally established as a National Cemetery. The first documented burial is of Johana Bucek who passed away in July, 1878.

Family tradition says Filip Bucek, husband of Johana Bucek, was the first one buried in the cemetery. The Texas-Czechs who established the

cemetery were mostly immigrants from Moravia. This cemetery was originally known as the Velehrad Cemetery.

Many of the Texas-Czechs buried in the Velehrad Cemetery were founders and active members of the SPJST. Ferdinand Breska, the first Vice President of the SPJST, is buried in the cemetery.

The Velehrad Cemetery was maintained by SPJST Lodge 19, Velehrad for many years. In 2004, the Velehrad Cemetery became part of the SPJST District Six Cemetery Organization. Its name was then changed to the SPJST Velehrad Cemetery.

District Seven Spring Meeting and Membership Rally Success SPJST District Seven Spring Meeting/Membership Rally, hosted

by Lodge 202, Jourdanton, was held March 4, 2007, at the Jourdanton Community Center. President Jeff Barta presided. Lodge 202 Youth Club members posted the colors and led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Colleen Jenke, Larry Bertrand, and James House were appointed to the auditing committee. Members of the nominating committee were Jerry Elzner, Polly Bayer, and Joan Wiederhold.

Second Vice President Jerry Sijansky presented a tribute to the deceased members.

Secretary Bettie House read the minutes that were approved as read.

Correspondence included thank you notes from the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum and SPJST Education and Nature Center for the contributions.

FAC Glen Pruski announced the names of the 50-year members.

Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek reported on the SPJST Home Office addition, bowling tournament, SPJST weekend in Corpus Christi in August, Join Hands Day, and the status of premium refunds for certificates issued before 1968. Checks were presented to the district.

State Youth Director John Hoelscher is enthused about the opportunity with the ENC involvement. He is always available to assist the youth in any way.

District Seven Royalty were recognized: King Travis Barta, Queen Veronica Barta, Duke Devin Vasquez, and Duchess Liliana Wiederhold.

Glen Pruski voiced the table prayer.

A roast beef lunch was served.

DYC Wendy Pruski presented the youth club’s financial report and announced the winners of the Kraslice - Czech Easter Egg Decorating Contest.

Treasurer Valerie Barta presented the financial report.

District Seven Director Bob Bayer congratulated the five lodges in the district that were award winners: Lodges 79, 107, 185, 239, and 247.

Youth clubs receiving awards were 107, 185, 202, 239, 247, and 251.

District Seven was an award winner.

The Laredo lodge is ready to be chartered. The Alice lodge will reorganize. Bayer thanked everyone for bringing eyeglasses and aluminum can tabs. The Ronald McDonald House appreciates the continued support of District Seven.

nized the sales agents and praised them for their dedication and hard work. He also gave details on the membership drive.

State FAC Chester Jenke reported on the bowling tournament. Last year, 27 lodges participated in the Join Hands project, and he encouraged more participation this year.

Standing committee members Wendy Pruski (insurance) and Bettie House (by-law) gave reports. District Seven made it mandatory that all standing committee members or their substitutes give reports at the District Spring Meeting each year.

S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home Director Jerry Sijansky stated the directors are considering remodeling or building a new rest home and adding on to the assisted living facility in Taylor. ENC Director Frances McDonald submitted her resignation. LAM Director Roxanne Bertrand thanked District Seven for its continued contributions.

The golf tournament on April 28 will benefit the LAM. ENC Consultant Sherrie Watkins reported on various aspects of the ENC project.

Lodge 79 FAC Jerry Sijansky thanked those who contributed to the “No Bake-Bake Sale.” The amount collected was $1,095 and was split between the Texas Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange, the SPJST LAM, and the SPJST ENC. FAC Glen Pruski recognized the 2006 District Fraternalist of the Year nominee Valerie Barta.

The auditing committee found the books were in order.

Lodge 24, Cyclone plans Mother’s Day barbecue Lodge 24, Cyclone met for its monthly meeting on Monday, March 12, 2007. President Daniel Wilde called the meeting to order. After the Pledge of Allegiance, we had a moment of silence for past members and ill members of the lodge.

Secretary Margaret Mikeska read the minutes of the past meeting, and they were approved as read. Treasurer Barbara Macek gave the treasurer’s report. Johnny Klecka reported on the upcoming events. Join Hands Day will be on May 5, and we will be helping the youth hand out meals to our local needy. The SPJST Three-Gun Shoot will be on May 12 in Snook, Texas.

Joan Vanicek gave the youth report.

There were 18 youth at the last meeting on March 3. They participated in Core Challenge in which several won ribbons. They are planning a bake sale on Saturday, March 31 at Green’s Sausage House in Zabcikville.

President Daniel Wilde reported that the SPJST Annual State Straight Domino Tournament was a success.

Macek for painting the cook-shed roof. Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek presented Lodge 24, Cyclone with the Gold Award, a lodge incentive award from the SPJST Awards Banquet held February 24 in Killeen.

Another upcoming event is our annual Mother’s Day Barbecue on Sunday, May 13. Plates will cost $7 and consist of barbecue chicken and all the trimmings. Plates will be available for dine-in or take-out. Doors open at 11 a.m. Treat your mother; come on down, and enjoy a delicious meal!

Lodge 32, Victoria honors sales agents On Thursday, March 8, 2007, Lodge 32, Victoria honored our sales agents with a rib-eye dinner. We wanted them all to know how much we appreciate their hard work. They made our lodge feel so proud as we were presented the Diamond Award at the SPJST Awards Banquet in Killeen on February 24. We were number two in the state - wow - and we’re off to a great start in 2007! Local awards were presented to Silvia Perry, Edward Rendon, David Ortiz, and Mike Ahlstrom. Again, thank you so much. We also thank Al Haisler for sharing his musical talent with us before and during our meal.

We had absolutely gorgeous weather and a great crowd . . . as well as famous Prasek’s kolaches. It doesn’t get much better than that! Thanks to all the members who worked to make this event such a success . . . especially Franklin and Lois Elles. They have been in charge of this festival since the beginning—many years ago.

Potluck and Spring Bonnet—April 12 Our next scheduled monthly meeting will be Thursday, April 12. We will gather at 6 p.m. and serve at 6:30 p.m. Each family is asked to bring a main dish and a side dish or dessert.

We should have a great variety of choices — yum, yum! Be sure to come hungry. Also, wear your favorite spring bonnet, hat or cap . . . spring is in the air.

One more thing . . . in my first article as reporter, I left out one of our officers. My apologies to Mary Raska — our secretary for several years.

Lodge 47, Seaton to honor members April 1 Greetings to all members and friends from Lodge 47, Seaton.

Another month has passed, and before we know it, the year will be half over.

Before long, school will be out. The busy summer schedule starts with camps, and all the great summer activities will be in full swing.

Our March 4, 2007, meeting was well-attended. The meeting was called to order by President Edwin Pechal.

Flag Bearers Brandon Hoelscher and Brady Alexander brought in the flags and led the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance. A moment of silence was observed in memory of Edwin Adamek of Lodge 29, Taylor. He has served as a past alternate District Two Director. May he rest in eternal peace. Our heartfelt sympathies go to the Adamek family.

He will be missed by all who knew him.

Joyce Skrabanek sent out get well cards to Linda Gersbach, Lillie Skrabanek, Ella Hejl, Martha Machalek, Anton Schiller, Marcus Psencik, and Edwin Marek, Jr. We wish these members a speedy recovery. Hope to see them around soon.

The February 4 minutes were read

by Secretary Dolores Skrabanek. The minutes were accepted as read.

The Investigating Committee did not receive the new membership list from the SPJST Home Office in time for our meeting. We will approve any new members next month.

Correspondence received was a letter from Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas announcing the lodge refund for 2006. Our lodge qualified for the Platinum Award in the 2006 incentive program. The Platinum Award check was presented to Lodge 47 at the SPJST Awards Banquet on February 24 at the Killeen Civic and Conference Center. Thank you cards were received from the Jerry Urubek family and the Bill Craft family for the floral arrangements sent to the deceased member’s funeral. A letter was also received from Beth Rabroker asking permission to leave the meeting early; her son had a soccer game.

attend the District Two Spring Meeting scheduled for March 18 with registration starting at 1 p.m. The meeting will start at 2 p.m. The spring meeting is a business meeting with the election of district officers and to take care of other business the district may have. The fraternalist of each lodge in District Two will be recognized along with the 50- and 75-year and Age 96 members. The Little Mr./Miss SPJST parade of young children ages three to five will be held. The children do not have to be members of SPJST to participate in the parade. Lodge 47, Seaton will be responsible for preparing the meal of chicken and beef fajitas, rice, beans, toppings, tea, and dessert.

The Lodge 47 board meeting is scheduled for March 12 because of conflicts on the regular date.

If you are interested in cutting/mowing the grass around the hall and grounds, please send in your bid to Edwin Pechal as soon as possible. Bids will be opened at the March 12 meeting.

First Vice President Calvin Skrabanek thanked Woodrow Marek for putting the mulch around the newly planted oak trees. He called for a workday on March 10 starting at 8 a.m. Please come out and help.

There will be work for everyone.

Most of the work will be on the outside.

Second Vice President/FAC Amanda Greger reported on several upcoming events. The State 42 Domino Tournament will be hosted

by Lodge 47 on April 7. The entry fee is $7 which will include snacks and

lunch. SPJST has a new event for 2007. SPJST will host its first ThreeGun Shooting Tournament on Sunday, May 12 at the Gunsmoke Shooting Range, located east of Snook. The three-gun shoot will include contests for rifle, pistol, and shotgun. The event will include skeet competition, rifle, and pistol. Shotgun ammo will be provided by SPJST. Rifle and pistol ammo must be provided by the shooter. The registration fee is $60 for all three categories or $25 per each event.

Join Hands Day is May 5. Our lodge will join the youth in this project. Plans are in progress. More information later as plans are made.

The SPJST Library, Archives and Museum Golf Tournament is April 28 starting at 1 p.m. at White Stone Golf Club in Benbrook, Texas. The putting

contest starts at 12 noon. Fee is $65 per person or $260 for a four-man team. All golfers are encouraged to sign up for a great game and help the museum, and, at the same time, have fun.

Fun for your family and friends awaits you at the Good Times in Corpus Christi End-of-Summer GetAway on August 10 to 12. They will have all kinds of contests. Start making plans to attend the get-away now.

Little Golden Book collection drive for the Ronald McDonald Houses of Texas is now through October. If you have some of the books and would like to get rid of them, this is a perfect time to do it. They will provide hours of enjoyment to the youngsters staying at the homes. These are families of children who are being treated in local hospitals for cancer and other serious illnesses or trauma. This is a wonderful way to share with the ill children of Texas. My children used to love the Little Golden Books.

Secretary Dolores Skrabanek reported on the SPJST Awards Banquet held on Saturday, February 24 in Killeen. Congratulations to Patsy Koslovsky for being selected as one of the top five Fraternalists of the Year. You have represented us well, and I know you will continue representing Lodge 47. Patsy was also honored as a Million Dollar Producer.

Congratulations to her. Also, in District Two, the Seaton Youth Club won the top honor. That’s the way to go! Keep up the good work. Robert “Bob” Hagen from Lodge 246, Morgan’s Point was selected as State Fraternalist of the Year for 2006.

District Two Youth Counselor Patsy Koslovsky thanked everyone for supporting her.

The District Two officers have met, and Lodge 47 members are asked to bring a dessert to complement the meal for the District Two Spring Meeting. Patsy made a presentation to Brooke Hoelscher who won the SPJST Camp Tee-Shirt Design Contest. She presented Brooke with a $100 gift certificate to Wal-Mart.

Congratulations to Brooke. Patsy stated that every Lodge 47 member should purchase a tee-shirt to show support.

Assistant Youth Leader Melanie Regan gave the youth club report.

She stated that there were several members who won at the Bell County Junior Fair and Livestock Show in February. Congratulations to all the winners. The recent fund-raiser was a success. Thank you to Leroy Dana for donating the meat for the chili. She thanked everyone who helped in any way as well as those who donated items for the silent auction and those who came out to eat and participate in the games and silent auction. An Easter egg hunt is planned for the April meeting so don’t forget your basket. You don’t have to be a member to hunt. What great fun the children will have—makes us want to be young again! We can all be young-atheart no matter what age you are.

Chairperson’s reports were satisfactory.

Entertainment Chairperson Edwin Pechal stated that on the entertain-

ment calendar, a battle dance was scheduled for March 11. The doors would open around 12:30 p.m. or no later than 1 p.m. The kitchen would be open serving hamburgers and the usual. March is a busy month for us.

There are several private functions.

Please volunteer your help if you can.

Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony The ribbon cutting ceremony by the Temple Chamber of Commerce will be on Wednesday, March 21 at 12 noon. A light lunch will be served along with some snacks. We hope to see many of you at the ribbon-cutting.

June 3 Annual Picnic The June 3 annual picnic is fast approaching. President Pechal stated that committee and chairpersons need to be selected. Tractor pulls will be on Saturday, June 2 and Sunday, June 3.

Lodge 47 members will be making homemade sausage for the plates on Friday, June 1 starting at 8 a.m. Leroy Dana will be in charge of frying chicken. More on this matter later as plans are being finalized.

Next Meeting—April 1 At our next meeting on April 1, we will honor our 50-year, 75-year, and Age 96 members. We will also have an Easter egg hunt for the children or anyone who feels young-at-heart.

Don’t forget your baskets. In order to hunt eggs, you do not have to be a member. Members are asked to bring a salad or sweet to complement the meal.

The Temple Police Department DARE program is asking for a donation to help with the purchase of materials for use by the DARE program.

The lodge voted to help 50 children.

This is a worthwhile organization helping kids cope with decisions regarding drugs and/or abusive situations.

Fund-Raiser—September 9 A committee was selected for the upcoming fund-raiser scheduled for September 9. Committee members are Chairman David Pechal, Gary Skrabanek, Patsy Koslovsky, Amanda Greger, Dolores Skrabanek, Edwin Pechal, Beth Rabroker, and David Coufal.

Wedding anniversaries in March will be celebrated by Albert and Patsy Koslovsky and Dan and Helen Wiley, (58 years). We wish you many more.

Lodge 48 Beyersville continues hall improvements President Robert Leshikar called the last meeting of Lodge 48, Beyersville to order on Sunday, March 11, 2007. We held a moment of silence for Leroy Kubala and Billy Chalupa, our deceased members. We pray that God’s comfort is with these two families.

Before the meeting, we helped ourselves to a great meal provided by Demetria and Gilbert Schiller and Alice Wuensche. We had many different sandwiches, chips, and desserts.

We had about 35 people present at the meeting.

The property committee met at 4 p.m. They advised us that their projects have been revised to place five new lights in one part of the hall to determine if that will produce the desired lighting effect. The committee will also purchase a new water heater so that we can meet our needs in that department. They are also looking into air conditioning the bar area, placing two new light poles in both the existing, and the new parking areas, and getting the new parking area completed by September. They will also work on getting new light fixtures for outside lights and either tiling the bathrooms or staining the floors.

The activities committee met after our meeting to finalize some plans.

Lodge 84, Dallas Fellowship Day Scenes Tuesday, February 20, 2007 • Lodge 84, Dallas Hall This was our first Lodge 84, Dallas Fellowship Day to be held in 2007. January’s event had to be canceled due to bad weather. But on February 20, it was a beautiful day, and we were glad to see such a great attendance.

A big thank you to Adolph Provazek for entertaining all of us with his accordion music. We all enjoyed the polkas and waltzes he played.

Once again, John Becan did an excellent job calling bingo. Thanks, John. And, thanks to Bessie Petr for grilling hamburgers for the group. They were delicious.

We want to also thank everyone for bringing food to share, helping to serve it, and cleaning up after the function.

Everyone seemed to enjoy eating, socializing, and playing games and bingo.

Our next Fellowship Day will be March 20. Come celebrate the beginning of spring, and join us in a day of fun activities.

Remember, we have Fellowship Day every third Tuesday of the month. Don’t forget to mark your calendar for our next event to be held on March 20. See you then.

Kay Gerlich Weeks gave the youth report. Upcoming events for the youth members are the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive; Komen Race for the Cure on April 7; the District Three Spring Meeting on Sunday, April 22 at Lodge 84, Dallas; American Cancer Society Relay for Life in May; Join Hands Day on May 5; District Three Youth Achievement Day on Sunday, June 24 at Lodge 92, Fort Worth; Arlington Fourth of July parade; and District Three Camp on July 19 to 22 at Camp Hope. In addition, Kay Weeks and Debra Daniel will be attending the youth leaders conference on Saturday and Sunday, March 24 and 25 at the Czech Inn in West.

Lodge 196 Houston-West presents January meeting minutes The January 14, 2007, meeting of SPJST Lodge 196, Houston-West was called to order at 3 p.m. by Vice President-Elect Dean Patschke. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Dean.

The roll of officers was then called.

Present were Vice President-Elect Dean Patschke, Treasurer Alma Schulz, Secretary Fran Price, and

Youth Leader-Elect Marie Stayton.

There was a moment of silence for Nancy Filecia, a deceased member, and for past Lodge 196 President

Cecilia Malek’s mother, who died this week. Alma passed a card around for everyone to sign for Cecilia.

Marie made a motion to suspend reading the minutes for October and November and only read the minutes for December. It was seconded and approved. The minutes for October and November were handed around and read by the members. The minutes for December were read, corrected, accepted, and signed by Acting President Dean Patschke.

The treasurer’s reports for November and December, 2006, were read, accepted, and signed by Acting President Dean Patschke.

Hall Report — Alma states the ice machine still needs cleaning, and the air conditioner needs to be checked.

Dean states he will do that. Alma said the lodge has been rented every weekend in January.

There was discussion that lodge keys need to be returned as well as some things that below to the youth.

Dean said he will look into the matter Liquor licenses were discussed.

Private club licenses are being considered. Dean is going to look into getting private club licenses, as he feels it will be good for the lodge if we qualify. Dean will also let the state know we want our liquor licenses placed on hold.

Krouzek Ceskych Zen—Dallas Circle of Czech Women President Bertha Podhrasky called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all members and guests.

Bertha welcomed 13 members, four men guests, and Lydia Andrews, caretaker of Helen Oates.

This was our first meeting of the year. We did not have a meeting in January. In February, due to the inclement weather, the meeting was cancelled.

Secretary Carole Faraizl read the

minutes of the November and December meetings, and they were approved as read.

Treasurer Deanna Houpy handed out a copy of the treasurer’s report.

She sent donations to Southwestern Medical School for the Czech Physicians Education Fund for the Czech Doctors coming from Brno,

Czech Republic. She also sent a donation to Sokol for the use of the building.

Joyce also sent 27 Christmas cards to the shut-ins.

Bessie Tydlaska read the birthdays in February and March. Sidney Bridewell was Queen for a Day. She got to wear the crown and blow out the candle and make a wish. “Happy Birthday” was sung to the celebrants.

Our unfinished business was to review the by-laws, and we discussed the proposed changes. Carole will type up the by-laws with the changes and bring it back to the meeting next month.

A motion was made that we

adjourn, and we adjourned with our famous quotation: Mejte se vzdycky radi—Always love one another.

The do vyhry gifts were drawn and handed out. Bertha guessed the number of kisses in the jar. Esther said the blessing, and we enjoyed soup, sandwiches, salad, and dessert. No hostesses were assigned. Thanks to everyone who helped in the kitchen.

The hostess for April is Jeraldine Becan. Our next meeting is April 5.

We hope to see more members next month.

Lodge 247, San Marcos Adults and Youth Celebrate 2006 Achievements Austin’s Park ’n Pizza in Austin, Texas Lodge 247, San Marcos Youth Club traveled to Austin’s Park ’n Pizza in Austin, Texas, to have the pizza party that the club won for the 2006 Top State Youth Club award. The youth enjoyed allyou-can-eat pizza and fun games such as miniature

golf, lazer tag, and much more.

The adult lodge came along to celebrate winning the Sapphire Award. It was a rainy day at Austin’s Park ’n Pizza, but that didn’t stop us from having a great time with our fellow members.

In Memory of Joe Novak

In Memory of Jesse Hajek

Joe Frank Novak, age 77, died Monday, February 19, 2007, at his home in Ennis.

He was born December 16, 1929, in Ennis, the son of Joe and Mary Trojacek Novak. He was reared in Ennis, graduating from Ennis High School in 1947. From 1951 to 1952, he served in the United States Army in the Korean War. On November 23, 1963, he was married to Charleen Honza. After their marriage they lived in Ennis where he was employed as a pressman for Ennis Business Forms. He was a member of SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis; Telico Church; and WFLA 402. He served as Scoutmaster for Troop 211 and served as a board member of the Telico Cemetery.

He is survived by wife Charleen of Ennis; sons Carl Wayne Novak of Ennis and Robert Joe and wife Sherry Novak of Fort Worth; grandchildren Jody Allen Novak and Matthew Wayne Novak; special niece Linda Trojacek of Ennis; and other special nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson Joseph Taylor Novak; and sister Mary A. Novak.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 24 in Keever Chapel with Reverends Irvan Anthony, David Howard, and Richard Derrick officiating.

Interment followed in the Telico Cemetery under the direction of J.E. Keever Mortuary.

Serving as pallbearers were David and Richard Hornik, Mitch Szempruch, Clint Tims, Chad Spence, and James Novy.

A memorial has been made to the SPJST Scholarship Fund in memory of Brother Joe Frank Novak.

We, the members of SPJST Lodge 73, Seymour, wish to express our heartfelt sympathy to the family and friends of our departed member, JESSE GEORGE HAJEK, age 88, who passed away Saturday, February 17, 2007, in Seymour, Texas.

Christian wake services were held at 7 p.m. Monday, February 19 at the Seymour Memorial Funeral Home Chapel, followed by a funeral mass at 10 a.m. Tuesday, February 20 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, officiated by Friar Richard Eldredge.

Interment was in the SPJST Cemetery under the direction of Seymour Memorial Funeral Home.

Mr. Hajek was born October 10, 1918, in Seymour, Texas, to Edmond and Mary Masar Hajek. He married Tracy Kovar on October 10, 1939.

She preceded him in death in 1993 after 53 years of marriage.

He was a World War II veteran serving in the Navy on the U.S.S. Finch. After a long career in farming and insurance, he retired in 1978.

Mr. Hajek was a longtime member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and SPJST Lodge 73, Seymour. He was particularly proud of his Czech heritage. He was an avid gardener and enjoyed traveling, fishing, and visiting with friends and grandchildren.

He is survived by daughters Geraldine Kuehler and husband Jerry of Seymour and Arlene DeYoung and husband Larry of Granbury, Texas; son David Hajek of Seymour; special friend Bobbie Cooper of Seymour; grandchildren, Kimberly Dabbs and husband Bob, Natalie Kuehler and husband Donald, Lane DeYoung and wife Jael, Adam DeYoung and wife Caitlin, Dustin Hajek and wife Amy, Jonathan Hajek, Erin Hajek, and David Hajek, Jr.; great-grandchildren, Will and Callie Dabbs, Sydney and Brock Kuehler, Taylor and Sydney Olsen, Ryann DeYoung, Kathryn DeYoung, and Hudson Hajek; and sister Albina Michna of Seymour.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; brother Joe Hajek; and sisters Edith Michalik and Mary Coufal.

In Memory of Henry Slovacek

Expression of Sympathy

Henry A. Slovacek, age 93, died peacefully on Sunday, March 4, 2007, at the Red River Regional Hospital in Bonham with his family by his side.

He was born August 23, 1913, in Alma, the son of Joseph and Margaret Sheliga Slovacek. He was reared in Alma where he attended school. On November 6, 1939, he was married to Mildred Slovak.

After their marriage, they lived in Corsicana before moving to Oregon.

In 1949, they moved to the Oak Grove community. During World War II, he served in the United States Army in the Pacific Theatre. He was employed as an assistant with Corley Funeral Home in Corsicana for three years. He was a carpenter and farmer for over 50 years and was with Leggett and Platt for five years retiring in 1981.

He was preceded in death by Mrs. Slovacek on November 24, 1997; brothers Joe and John Slovacek; and sisters Frankie Sebena, Rose Stivers, Mary Mach, Emma Hrbacek, and Edith Sedlacek.

He was a member of SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis; St. John Catholic Church; KJT; and the American Legion.

He is survived by sons Henry David Slovacek of Whitewright and Danny and wife Shirley Slovacek of Ennis; daughter and husband Joanie and John Rynties of Whitewright; grandchildren Jeremy Dene, Paul Toal, Jaclyn Slovacek, and Scott Slovacek; great-grandchild; three step-grandchildren; and beloved dog, Tooter.

Rosary was recited at 7 p.m.

Tuesday, March 6 in the Keever Chapel. Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 7 in St. John Catholic Church with Reverend Michael Guadagnoli as celebrant. Interment followed in St. Joseph’s Cemetery under the direction of J.E. Keever Mortuary.

Serving as pallbearers were Raymond Marak, Tommy Slama, Bobby Slovak, and James, Lawrence, and Raymond Slovacek.

A memorial has been made to the SPJST Scholarship Fund in memory of Brother Henry A. Slovacek by SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis officers and members.

Funeral services for Elo John Junek Jr., 54, of Sulphur, Oklahoma, and a former resident of Snook, were held at 10 a.m. on Monday, February 19, 2007, from Strickland Funeral Home Chapel in Somerville with Reverend Rudy Junek and Reverend John R. Gantt, Jr., officiating.

Mr. Junek died Thursday, February 15, 2007, in Fritch, Texas.

He was born December 12, 1952, in Texas City. He graduated from Snook High School in 1971 and was married to Carollyne Glover. He worked as an industrial pipe fitter for an oil refinery.

He enjoyed riding his grandchildren around on the lawn mower, which he called yard work and going fishing and working in the garden.

He always had an outdoor project going, whether it was building a patio or a storage building, but he loved the outdoors.

He was a member of Hope Evangelical Free Church in College Station.

Survivors include parents Lynn and Elo Junek, Sr., of Snook; wife of 34 years, Carollyne Junek of Sulphur, Oklahoma; daughter and son-in-law Christian LeAnn and Jimmy Edwards of Sulphur, Oklahoma; son and daughter-in-law, Elo and Jamie Junek III, of Lawton, Oklahoma; brother and sister-in-law Terry Lynn and Patt Junek of Snook; sisters and brother-in-law Beverly Ann and Larry Derkowski of Snook and Linda Kay and Jack Baumann of Snook; five grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, and other relatives.

Pallbearers were Jack Baumann, Jr., Len Derkowski, Shannon Junek, Tony and Justin Derkowski, Kody Junek, Bradley Novosad, and Broderick Ford.

Memorials may be made to Hope Evangelical Free Church, 5376 Raymond Stolzer Parkway, College Station, Texas 77845.

In Memory of Raymond E. Zievert, Sr.

Raymond E. Zievert, Sr., 70, of the Nickel community passed away peacefully at 9:30 p.m. Friday, December 15, 2006.

Open visitation was from 1 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, December 19 with a rosary at 7 p.m., which was recited and led by Deacon Terry Brennan. The funeral mass was conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday, December 20 at Saints Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church in Shiner. Father Paul Raaz officiated, assisted by Deacon Terry Brennan, both of Gonzales. Gifts were brought to the altar by Raymond’s niece and nephew, Linda Erwin and Kenneth Pavloske.

Pallbearers were nephews Clarence and Victor Koteras, Kenneth and Ronald Pavloske, and Gary Ognowski, all of Houston, and cousin John Vincik of Hockley, Texas. Honorary pallbearers were nephew Paul Vanek who was home on leave from Iraq, nephew Alvin Tenberg, brother-in-law Robert Krebs, and friend Raymond Darilek.

Burial followed in the Shiner City Cemetery under the direction of Buffington Funeral Home in Shiner.

Raymond Edward Zievert, Sr., was born on October 3, 1936, in Chappell Hill, near Brenham, Texas to parents, Tellas C. and Nora Wisneaski Zievert.

Raymond was of Polish descent and of the Catholic faith. For many years, he was a member of SPJST Lodge 142, Houston and N.R.A. Survivors include his loving wife of 50 years, Pearl K. Sembera Zievert and son Raymond E. Zievert, Jr., both of the Nickel community near Gonzales; sister Stephany Pavloske of Houston; and many nieces and nephews.

Raymond was preceded in death by his parents, Tellas C. and Nora Zievert; sisters Pauline Koteras and Regina Ognowski, both of Houston; brother Johnnie Zievert of Moulton,; and two brothers who died in infancy.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the SPJST; N.R.A. organization; or to the donor’s choice.

Raymond will be sadly missed by all of us.

In Memory of Lawrence Shue

Expression of Sympathy

Lawrence Shue, age 61, passed away Monday, March 5, 2007, at his home in Oak Leaf. He was born December 5, 1945, in Ennis, Texas, to Virgil Otha and Edith (Bridger) Shue.

He graduated from Wilmer Hutchins High Lawrence Shue School in 1964 and served in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War. On May 17, 1968, he married Mary Faye Sharber in Amarillo, Texas.

Lawrence worked for Certainteed Roofing in Ennis for 22 years. He was a member of the South Park Assembly of God. He loved boating, fishing, vacationing, and spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his loving wife of 38 years, Faye Shue of Oak Leaf; daughters Kristie Shue Bailey of Red Oak and Sherry Johnson and husband Steve of Oak Leaf; grandchildren Kristen, Colton, Cason, and Emily; mother Edith Shue of Red Oak; brothers Darwin Shue of Ennis, Don Shue of Lancaster, and David Shue of Red Oak; sister Diane Dickerson of Red Oak; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Lawrence was preceded in death by his father, Virgil, and best friend and brother, Kenny Shue.

A memorial to the SPJST Scholarship Fund has been made by SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis officers and members.

We, the members of the Resolution Committee of Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje on behalf of our membership, wish to express our deepest and sincerest sympathy to the family of our departed sister, LORETTA JAKS. Loretta Knebel Jaks, 84, of El Campo died Thursday, March 8, 2007.

She was born February 22, 1922, in Hillje to Emil and Frances Skrovan Knebel. She was a homemaker and a member of the St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church.

Survivors include son Richard Jaks, Jr. and wife Glenda of Houston; grandson Michael Wayne Jaks of Hereford; sister Lucy Hubenak of El Campo; brother Lawrence Knebel of El Campo; and sister-in-law Josie Knebel of El Campo.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Richard Jaks, Sr.; grandsons Robert Loren Jaks and Richard Jaks, III; and brothers Ray Emil and Victor Knebel.

Visitation was Sunday, March 11, 2007, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Triska Funeral Home. A rosary was recited at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, March 12 at St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church. Funeral services followed at 10 a.m. on Monday, March 12 at St. Philip’s with the Reverend Gary Jenak officiating. Interment was at the St. Andrew’s Cemetery in Hillje.

Arrangements were under the direction of Triska Funeral Home.

Memorials in memory of Loretta Jaks may be made to the St. Philip School Endowment Fund.

District Two youth: take me out to the ballgame!

Doesn’t this beautiful springtime weather make you want to get out and enjoy the day? Well, on Sunday, April 29, 2007, the District Two Youth program is planning on doing just that. All members of District Two are invited to attend the Round Rock Express versus the Albuquerque Isotopes game, to be held at Dell Diamond in Round Rock.

The game begins at 2:05 p.m. We will reserve a block of seats down the first base line, close to the Fun Zone, which has activities for children.

Discounted tickets are $9 each.

The field is the only baseball field in Fayetteville. We have been working on it for sometime.

Lodge 24, Cyclone Youth Leader expresses thanks Dear Readers, Thank you to our District Two Youth Counselor Patsy Koslovsky and all the volunteers for their work at the Core Challenge on March 3. What a fun event, and we had a great turnout of youth!

Also, thank you to the Andel Family (Keith, Teresa, Dustin, Rachel, and Courtney) for their recent donation of storage tubs for organizing our youth club closet. You are so generous.

Lodge 25, Ennis youth collect treats for troops Lodge 25, Ennis Youth Club is participating in “Treats for Troops”. This is an ongoing project as long as we have troops overseas. We want to support and show them our appreciation for their service by sending monthly care packages.

We are looking for items that a soldier will be personally receiving such as packaged snacks, hard candy, canned chips, beef jerky, instant soup in disposable containers (just add water-style), plastic spoons, blank cards, homemade cookies in a tin can, etc. Other items that are used in care packages are plastic zipper-lock bags.

Wow! Luke and Seth Ray of Lodge 24, Cyclone have been diligently collecting canned drink pull tabs for the Ronald McDonald House.

They brought the tabs to the District Two Core Challenge on March 3 at Lions Park in Temple.

Lodge 48 Beyersville youth: fun weekend Lodge 48, Beyersville Youth Club had a meeting on March 11, 2007. I was almost late because I spent the night at my friend Amy’s house. We stayed up almost all night. We still went to church the next day, and Amy

and I did each other’s nails. Her mom is really neat because she let us put our sleeping bags in the living room and watch a movie.

We also went to my mommy’s birthday party the night before.

Grandma and Grandpa took us to Sirloin Stockade to eat. I got to sit next to Aunt DD and Cousin Bret. He is the president of our youth club.

Maybe when I am big like him, I can be president, too.

There is another big boy named Joshua that goes to the youth club. He is always nice to me. He helps me to understand the Vestnik projects. I stick my tongue out at him, but he is just like having a big brother. Kayla H. is so lucky.

Miss Donna was telling us about what all is going on. We are supposed to bring a canned food item for the food pantry every month because there are people in Taylor who do not have enough food. We are going to work there this weekend.

Then, I get to go to Austin with Aunt DD. She is having her last radiation treatment that Friday. We usually go eat. Then, we go to the mall to get ice cream.

Miss Donna and Miss Ellen said that we should think of activities that our youth club can do. We should try to get more people to come and join.

We gave a lot of good ideas like having a lock-in, swim party, going to the movies, going to Disney World, and other creative ideas.

Miss Donna will let us know when our next meeting is.

Lodge 48 Beyersville youth enjoys meeting Hey, Guys!

I had a lot of fun at the last meeting.

Daniel and Kayla H. led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Bret brought the meeting to order, and Kayla H. read the roll. She does a great job.

Miss Donna reminded us that we can all go to the Dell Diamond next month, and we can go over to the Fun Zone. That is where all the games are.

I wonder if I will get to climb that big rock. If you want a ticket, it is only like $5, but let Miss Donna know very soon.

Miss Donna was also telling us that if we donate a bunch of pennies that we can get points, but it also helps the big kids when they graduate. She said that we should not mail the pennies because it would be awful heavy for the mailman.

At the February meeting, we were told to keep practicing.

The youth leader asked me to bring my accordion to our March meeting. After the meeting, she asked the members who remem-

Harris County CHS to show Tri Veterani March 28 On Wednesday, March 28, 2007, the Harris County Chapter of the Czech Heritage Society is showing a Czech film titled “Tri Veterani”— “Three Veterans”.

It is a comedic folktale about three army veterans who are traveling together. One night, they each meet three magical elves who give each a magic gift. One gift produces an endless supply of money, another gift produces servants, and the third gift produces whatever thing they desire.

As the veterans are traveling in a foreign country, they are jailed and

robbed of their magical gifts by a greedy king and his royal family. In a hilarious way involving a fabulously growing nose, the veterans are able to get their magical gifts returned.

His Excellency Vaclav Klaus,

President of the Czech Republic, was born June 19, 1941, in Prague. He is only the second man to achieve the honor of President of the Czech Republic. A conservative, this economist is generally ranked among the most important Czech statesman since the fall of communism. He served as Prime Minister from 1992 to 1997.

Klaus grew up in Prague and graduated from the University of Economics there in 1963. He also studied at universities in Italy in 1966 and the United States in 1969. Going back to his homeland, he published articles on economics in the proreform, non-communist magazine Tvar, during the Prague Spring.

After a period of teaching in the postgraduate division of the state Institute of Economics of the Czech Academy of Sciences, he joined the Czech State Bank in 1970.

Next was the Czech Academy of

Sciences in 1987. In 1995, as Prime Minister, he was awarded a degree of Professor of Finance from his alma mater, and is often called “Mr. Professor” by his admirers.

Vaclav Klaus entered politics soon after the Velvet Revolution in 1989.

As a member, then chairman of Civil Forum, he became Minister of Finance. In April 1991, Klaus cofounded the Civic Democratic Party (ODS), at the time the strongest and most conservative of the post-Civil Forum splinter parties.

His vocal enthusiasm for the free market economy as practiced by Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan made him a natural father of the Czech economic transformation.

In June 1992, ODS won the elections in the Czech Republic with a reform program.

Eventually, Klaus resigned as ODS chairman, announcing his intention to run for President. He was elected in February 2003 by a ballot in a joint session of both chambers.

Klaus is married to Livia Klausova, an economist born in Slovakia. They have two sons, Vaclav, a private secondary school headmaster, and Jan, an economist, and five grandchildren.

A basketball player in his youth, Klaus is still an avid tennis player and skier. Since 1990, he has published over 20 books on various social, political, and economics subjects, some collections of his articles and speeches.

This was his first visit to Houston, Texas.

SPJST LAM: Bratrske Listy Brethren Journal books welcome addition for genealogy research

The SPJST Library, Archives and Museum in Temple, Texas received an invaluable source of genealogy research materials—Bratrske Listy Brethren Journal, years 1950 to 2003. Information contained in the journals include news of the congregations and preaching stations, births/baptisms, deaths, confirmations, marriages, etc.

John Stasny, member of SPJST Lodge 29, Taylor, Texas Czech Genealogical Society and TravisWilliamson Counties CHS, and

Bill Hodon, member of TCGS and CHS, copied, compiled, and had the journals bound. Each bound book contains one year of the Brethren Journal. On Thursday, March 8, 2007, John and Bill delivered the books to the SPJST LAM. Two families graciously donated the books from their own collections—the late Reverend Josef and Elsie Pokorny Barton and Mrs. Milady Holubec Skrivanek and the late Reverend Jesse Skrivanek.

Kraslice — Czech Easter Eggs available from SPJST LAM Just in time for Easter, Kraslice, or “decorated eggs,” from the Czech Republic are available from the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum. Recently, LAM President Jerry Milan, wife Henrietta, and their family traveled to the Czech Republic and returned with an egg collection which they donated to the LAM to help raise money for the Hanus Building renovation fund.

The hand-painted or otherwise decorated egg is the most recognizable symbol of Czech Easter. Girls decorate Easter eggs to give them to boys on Easter Monday. There are many Easter egg decorating techniques, and the more elaborate ones require a certain level of skill.

Different materials can be used, such as bee’s wax, straw, watercolors, onion peels, and stickers. There are no limitations to creating pretty, colorful eggs.

Batik is the most used technique for decorating Kraslice. Patterns are created in a wax coating with a pin or a small tube. After that, boiling or just dipping in the color solution dyes the egg. After that, the egg is warmed up and the wax is wiped off with a soft cloth, and the white ornaments appear on the single colored ground. After the color sets dry, another layer of the wax can be applied on the latest color coating to prevent the areas under color from being colored again. This procedure is repeated several times, starting with the lightest color and continuing to the darkest one.

Etching was used mainly in the regions characteristic with rich embroideries and wall paintings.

This technique isn’t used very wide.

Vinegar or juice from sauerkraut

would be applied to colored eggs with a match, pen, or a quill-pen as the traditional etching agent. Later on, they started to use nitric acid or hydrochloric acid. Kraslice made by etching were always just one color.

Pasting was spread at the end of the 19th century mainly in the vicinities of towns. Rush, barley or oat straws, textiles, wool, or yam were pasted on eggs with the help of thin dough, glue, or starch. White rush-pulp or swamp grass was pasted in spirals on eggs. Rush was combined with colorful laces, embroidery yarn, or with a floral design textile. Dipping the rush in color solution made dyed rush, and it was used mostly in the Kysuce region and in western Slovakia.

White rush was used mostly in the Trencin district. In Vajnory near Bratislava, dyed wool textile of pulp of grass were pasted on eggs to give them the shape of a bird. Its head was made from dough and fixed to a hole made in the eggshell; wings and tail were made from paper with folds. Decorating with straw was used at first only in the western part of Slovakia. Now the technique is also used in the districts of Prievidza and Galanta.

Eggs that are available at this time from the SPJST LAM range in size from small robin eggs at $9.95 each to goose eggs at $19.95 each.

The chicken eggs are $14.95. All of the small eggs are pasted, while the other two sizes contain eggs with good examples of pasting, batik, and etching. One egg is painted.

Czech by Numbers Lesson “Four”

Hello and welcome to Czech by

Numbers, Radio Prague’s own Czech language course, which looks at Czech numbers and their use in idioms and sayings. Today we will be examining the number four - čtyři.

The name of the figure is čtyřka.

The word also means a very bad mark in school, a premolar tooth, a fourth gear in a car, or a number four tram. A similar sounding word is čtyřčata - quadruplets, one quadruplet being čtyřče. A group of four is čtveřice. Not to be confused with čtverec - a square, as in a polygon with four equal sides and equal angles.

That again should not be confused with čtverák - a prankster, a tease. Why this meaning is related to the number four is a bit of mystery to me. (Etymologists say the word used to mean an impostor, originally a “connoisseur of the four arts”.) On the other hand, čtvernožec is a quadruped, a word usually applied to dogs.

Another way of saying four is čtvero, as in the phrase čtvero

One quarter is čtvrtina. Just as in English, a quarter in Czech means a district of a town, only a slightly different form of the word is used: čtvrť. This form is also used in telling the time. If you want to say ‘It’s quarter past one’ in Czech you say je čtvrt na dvě, literally ‘it is a quarter of two’.

Please note the slight difference in both spelling and pronunciation. And finally, čtvrtek, Thursday, is the fourth day of the week.

The Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra is a volunteer band comprised of around 30 semi-professional and accomplished musicians who enjoy playing the music of Central Europe. The Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra plays each year at the State Fair of Texas for Heritage Day, previously known as Czech Day. The band also performs for Czech functions and dances at the Czech halls in Dallas that include SPJST, SOKOL and Czech Club (KJT/KJZT). Their performance at most of the SOKOL SLET Annual Athletic Competitions and Exhibitions held throughout Texas is always well-received. The orchestra has played for special Czech events in Houston, Corpus Christi, Fort Worth, West, Caldwell, Belton, Bryan, and other towns in Texas.

In 1999, the orchestra performed in the Morton H. Myerson Symphony Center in Dallas for the Dallas International Festival. The orchestra has also performed in San Antonio at the Folklife Festival.

Day at the State Fair of Texas formed the band in 1964. The Czech Day Orchestra was formed, and it has played at the Texas State Fair each year for over 40 years. The band included some musicians from a dance band that Sid once had. In about 1970, the name was changed to The Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra because by then the band was performing for many different events.

In 1997, Sid Pokladnik went back to playing the trumpet in the band, and Larry Johnson, tuba player and former school band director, became the musical director for the Czech Orchestra. Sid passed away in 1999.

Larry Johnson, with his extensive background in music, is an excellent director who also scores and writes parts for some lost music. He is adding to the musical quality and heritage started many years ago by the late Sid Pokladnik.

The Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra continues to promote the Czech music that is an important part of Czech culture. The musicians’ aim is to share their love for this music with appreciative audiences.
