Celebrating a Successful Year

he SPJST Awards Banquet is this Saturday, February 24 at the Killeen Civic and Conference Center, located at 3601 South WS Young Drive in Killeen, Texas.

Many, many awards will be presented to deserving members, sales agents, and youth across the state.

The day’s schedule is: 11 a.m. — Registration Begins Please do not arrive any earlier than 10:30 a.m. Lodge officers and sales agents are encouraged to have their group/individual photos taken for the Vestnik between 10:45 a.m. and 11:45 a.m. The photo area will be located in the corridor on the south side of the Center (same location as previous year).

Lodge 24, Cyclone hosts SPJST State Straight Domino Tournament March 3 The 2007 SPJST State Straight Domino Tournament is set for Saturday, March 3 at Lodge 24, Cyclone’s Flag Hall.

Registration begins at 8 a.m., and play begins at 9 a.m. The fee is $7 which includes snacks and lunch.

Play is limited to SPJST members ages 16 and above.

I wish each of you could have been with us on January 26 and 27, 2007, during the festivities celebrating the establishment of the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas Frank J. and Hermine Hurta Kostohryz Residency in Czech Music and Culture in the College of Music at the University of North Texas in Denton. Petr Kolar, Czech Ambassador to the United States, was our special guest. It was a memorable occasion.

James Scott, Dean of the College of Music, and his colleagues were such gracious hosts. They gave us ample opportunity to visit with students from various disciplines in the Honors College and International Programs and to listen to them perform.

We were especially impressed with Jiri Levicek, a brilliant young pianist-composer from Brno who played the most lilting jazz with such ease and grace. Others were eager to discuss their studies, career plans, and the trip they will be taking to the Czech Republic in March with Professor Thomas Sovik and 45 other lucky students.

Inspired by their dedication and enthusiasm, we on the CEFT board came away determined to increase the endowment by an additional $600,000 within the calendar year so that an even greater number of these talented young cultural ambassadors from both countries

A strong presence in Czech music and culture at North Texas will build upon the firm foundation that the dedicated people at that institution have already set in place and will enable students to explore, for generations to come, the rich cultural heritage of the Czech people.

Through the end of January, the SPJST has received 388 applications for insurance certificates. The goal of the Rhythm ’07 membership drive is 2,777.

In conjunction with SPJST’s Rhythm ’07 program, local lodges have been assigned application goals for the year.

The lodge goal has been based largely on past performance and perceived potential.

District Two Core Challenge Set for March 3 in Temple Dear Readers, Please join us for a day of fun on Saturday, March 3 at Lions Park in Temple. District Two will be sponsoring Core Challenge. We are expecting youth from many local areas. It will be a day of many different challenges for all ages including adults. The park has a very nice playground. If you do not want to participate, come anyway, watch the youth, bring your lawn chairs and just relax.

We have several different youth clubs who will be selling hot dogs, water, and desserts.

Winning contestants will receive

ribbons. There will also be door prizes. This event is open to the public, and you do not have to be an SPJST member. Bring all your friends.

If you plan to participate, you must have a parent’s signature. Forms (see below) will be available that day or you can contact me (254) 985-2396 or State Youth Director John Hoelscher at the SPJST Home Office.

CORE CHALLENGE A TEST OF PHYSICAL STRENGTH AND AGILITY “Core Challenge: A Test of Physical Strength and Agility” is a recreational sports program sponsored by the SPJST. It is an excellent way to challenge yourself versus your friends and get fit. Core Challenge encourages young people to stay in shape and meet The President’s Challenge, a progam of the President’s Council on Physical Fitnes and Sports. The SPJST is a fraternal organization serving Texas families since 1897.

When:

March 3 • Registration 8-9 Activities start at 9:30 a.m.

Where: Temple’s Lion’s Park *A $2 entry fees will benefit the SPJST District 2 youth program.

Core Challenge presents seven individual events that test both strength and agility.

HERCULES CHALLENGE: The participant moves five heavy objects 30 feet, this is a timed event.

LOG THROW: The participant throws a log for distance.

BENT ARM SOLDIER HANG: The participant hangs from a bar with his/her arms bent as long as possible.

SLED PULL: The Participant will be put in a harness and will pull a weighted sled 100 feet, this is a timed event.

AGILITY COURSE: The participant will run around, through, and over objects as fast as they can.

SPRINT RACE: The participant will sprint in a 100 yard dash.

FOOTBALL THROW: The participant will throw for distance and accuracy.

Boy and Girl Division Age Groups: 5-8 Division, 9-11 Division, 12-14 Division 15 to High School Senior Division First, second, and third place will be awarded in each age category.

District Two Youth Encouraged to Participate in Spring Meeting Dear Members, The District Two Spring Meeting will be held Sunday, March 18, 2007, at Lodge 47, Seaton. It will be a day of fun-filled activities for all. We will be filling Easter eggs, having an egg hunt, and the Kraslice Easter Egg Decorating Contest.

For our future youth club members, we will have a Little Mr. and Miss SPJST Parade. We ask that all young ones ages three to five years join us for this special parade. If there are ones who are a little older or younger who want to join us, we would love to have them also. District Two King Kyle Vanecek and Queen

Amber Penn will be our emcees for this neat event. Parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, friends—get your young ones involved. Get your smiles and cameras ready as these precious angels perform on stage. Please contact me or your lodge youth leader on who will be participating to make sure we have equal gifts for each one.

What a great day this will be for all of us! Youth members, start working on your eggs. Rules are on page 39 in your handbooks.

Lodge 81, Needville to Host District Five Spring Meeting District Five’s Spring Meeting will be held on Saturday, March 17, 2007, at Lodge 81, Needville. Registration will begin at 11:30 a.m. with lunch at 12 noon. The meeting will start at 1 p.m. To touch on the agenda, we will have election of officers, selection of the 2008 meeting sites, and discussion on the future District Five Membership Rallies.

For our dessert table, donations of cakes, pies, and other pastries will be welcomed. Other donations of items for door prizes and pastries for auctioning will be greatly appreciated.

All proceeds from the auctions will go into the district funds.

We would like to see all the lodges in District Five represented at this spring meeting. Remember, your attendance and participation will count toward your lodge’s fraternal hours. Family and friends, members and non-members are all welcome.

Come and enjoy the day, and the hospitality of Lodge 81, Needville.

Lodge 202, Jourdanton to Host District Seven Spring Meeting/ Membership Rally March 4 Lodge 202, Jourdanton will host the District Seven Spring Meeting and Membership Rally on Sunday, March 4, 2007, at the Jourdanton Community Center, located at 1101 Campbell Avenue in Jourdanton.

Registration begins at 10 a.m., and the meeting convenes at 10:30 a.m.

Lodge 202 will provide complimentary refreshments for the brunch, and free soft drinks throughout the day.

Each lodge is asked to bring its lodge banner for display.

A roast beef lunch will be served at 12 noon for $3 per plate. To order plates, please notify your local lodge secretary; or Bettie House (830) 2818246 or email landbhouse@juno.com.

Deadline to order is Sunday, February 25.

Members will have the opportunity

to submit names of potential new members. A $25 gift card drawing will be held for membership referrals.

Lodge 6 Cottonwood plans spring activities Hi! President Brother Milton Peterson called the Lodge 6, Cottonwood meeting to order on Sunday, February 4, 2007, at 2 p.m.

Our other guests were District Five Director Larry W. Pflughaupt and his wife, Dorothy, of Lodge 88, Houston.

Brother Jenke spoke to us briefly regarding the State Tarok Tournament that was held at our lodge the day before on Saturday, February 3. He mentioned that it was marvelous, and Brother Ernest Bezdek of Lodge 6 stayed on top right up to the end.

Brother Ernest came in at second place.

Congratulations! Brother Jenke also spoke about other upcoming events, which I did not do well in getting the info on them, but watch your Vestnik for all events. We were very proud that the Jenkes and the Pflughaupts stayed over and joined us in our meeting.

Brother Milton called upon our Secretary Sister Barbara Jean Hykel for the reading of the minutes from our last meeting. They were approved

VĚSTNÍK as read. She also had some correspondence from the SPJST Home Office, I believe.

Sister Peggy Dobecka, Treasurer, gave her report, which was approved as given. As youth leader, she also gave her report of cakes delivered to the rest home on February 7. The youth are participating in the SPJST Camp Tee-Shirt Design Contest.

They are having a valentine’s party at the lodge hall on February 9, serving hot dogs and all the trimmings to the adults, also. The youth club’s next meeting will be on March 4 at 11 a.m. at Wild West Steakhouse in West.

Sister Barbara Hykel, FAC, reminded everyone about the upcoming SPJST Awards Banquet in Killeen on February 24. She needed to know the names of all who are attending.

She also had a letter regarding Bowl for the Cure with February 9 as the deadline for pre-registration. Sister

Barbara also mentioned that the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive continues until the end of March. She mentioned the State 42 Domino Tournament will be April 7 at Lodge 47, Seaton.

Sister Barbara mentioned that the Lifetime Achiever Awards will be presented at the District Three Spring Meeting at Lodge 84, Dallas on April 24. The awards will be presented to Dorothy Kucera, Dorothy Firasek, Robert Schiemenz, Nelda Hlavaty, and Jimmy and Evelyn Stuckly.

Brother George Straten, Financial Secretary, was called upon for his report. He reported no new members.

The lodge socials will be on March 2 and 16 at 6:30 p.m. The Easter party will be on April 1 with fried chicken/sausage and all the trimmings served. Wow, two celebrations— April Fools’ Day and Easter all in the same day!

Brother Johnnie Krizan, District Three Director, offered congratulations to a new sales agent into our lodge. We welcome Stephen Kucera.

He was recommended by his father, Brother Jerry Kucera, and approved by the lodge.

There were two birthday celebrants at the meeting. Happy birthday to Sisters Evelyn Bezdek and Mary Neckar. We also want to mention happy anniversary to Lydia and Robert Dobecka who celebrated 57 years of marriage on Valentine’s Day. And, happy anniversary to Kim and Robert Seith in February.

Door prizes were drawn with the winners being Sisters Lydia Dobecka, Mary Pavlas, and Barbara Hykel.

Lodge 92, Fort Worth Member Takes Top Prize at SPJST State Tarok Tournament Saturday, February 3, 2007 • Lodge 6, Cottonwood On February 3, 2007, members from across the state came to Cottonwood to participate in the State Tarok Tournament hosted by Lodge 6, Cottonwood. We had a good turn-out with 28 members representing 11 lodges who came out ready to play cards. Districts represented were Districts Two, Three, Five, and Seven.

The fellowship and fraternalism among the players was great. Many prizes were awarded. The participant

Secretary Ann Schoeneman read the minutes of the last meeting. They stood approved as read. David Kovar gave the hall manager’s report.

Donnie Victorick gave the treasurer’s report.

Youth Leader Marie Shelfer gave the youth club report. There were 29 youth members present, four guests, and 13 adults. Charities that were discussed were the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive and Join Hands Day. Lodge 9 decided to send $50 to the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive.

Mary Ann Kozel reported sending out 19 cards to members with special birthdays in February. Our January meeting fell victim to the cold weather and icy roads, so we didn’t have a report. Get well cards went to Lois Bates and Lydia Alholm. Sympathy cards went to the family of Steve Matusevich and Charles Hurst.

Trustee Joe Hubenak is recovering from surgery.

Lodge 202 Jourdanton finalizes plans for District Seven Spring Meeting Lodge 202, Jourdanton met February 4, 2007, at the Jourdanton Community Center with 37 members and guests present. President Jeff Barta presided. The youth club members led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Silence was observed for deceased members.

Secretary Bettie House read the minutes.

Correspondence was received from the SPJST Home Office in addition to the lodge refund.

ACCEPT and Atascosa County Livestock Show thanked the lodge for the donations. Treasurer Valerie Barta presented the financial report.

Valerie Barta read the correspondence from the National Fraternal Congress of America recognizing Bettie House as the “Fraternal MVP” (Most Valuable Participant) for the week of January 29, 2007.

Some old-timers showed up to see the old year out and the new year in, Bennie Kocich and Adolf Hoepfl. Bennie and Adolf have played cards together since 1988.

Also, to our surprise, some members of the lodge prepared black-eyed peas and corn bread. We would like to thank Pat Bruce and Mildred Holeman and their team for their work for our New Year’s Eve party.

Czech Springfest set April 1 at Lodge 88, Houston Music, food, family genealogy, cultural heritage, children’s games, crafts, silent auction, a country store, various vendors, folk dancers, folk art, and above all, friendly camaraderie will all come together at the annual Czech Heritage Society Springfest. It will be held on Sunday, April 1, 2007, at SPJST Lodge 88, Houston, which is located on 1435 Beall Street in the Heights. The hours will be from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

A traditional Czech Sunday dinner will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

After 2 p.m., chicken noodle soup and sausage with sauerkraut will be served. During dinnertime, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Kovanda’s Czech

Band will play for your listening pleasure. Starting at 3 p.m., The Red Ravens will strike up the band for dancing.

The Springfest strives very diligently to provide new attractions every year. Each year, our festival hosts a different guest artist from the Czech Republic. This year, Vladimir Klimes from Zubri will demonstrate his skill of wood carving. Another new attraction at this year’s festival will be a special dance performance of authentic Czech dances by Katie and John Pedersen. In addition, Miss Sarah Middlebrook, the USA national 2006 Miss Czech/Slovak Queen will be visiting our event. Harris County CHS Chapter contender for the 2007 title, Courtney Bates, will be presented there, also. The Czech cultural booth this year will feature displays of the numerous Czech castles.

The purpose of this festival is to support The Czech Heritage Society Library, located at 4117 Willowbend in Houston. Besides the library of Czech books, genealogical records, and Czech cultural displays, we provide a number of free services to the community such as Czech language classes, genealogy workshops, Czech movies, taroky classes, and advice on how to travel and what to see in the Czech Republic.

Expression of Sympathy

We, the members of SPJST Lodge 177, Academy, wish to express our heartfelt sympathy to the family and friends of our departed member, LIBBIE A. BARTEK, age 89, of Temple, who passed away February 12, 2007. Funeral services were held Thursday, February 15 at 2 p.m. at HarperTalasek Funeral Home Chapel in with Temple Reverend Joe Emerson officiating. Interment Libbie Bartek followed at Bellwood Memorial Park in Temple.

Libbie was born March 5, 1917, in East Bell County to John and Albina (Hejl) Chupik. She was a much loved member of SPJST Lodge 177, Academy. She was an active member in the Seaton Brethren Church and King’s Daughters Auxiliary. Her family, church, lodge friends, and the Seaton Christian Sisters were her greatest joys.

Libbie is preceded in death by her parents; husband Dennis; son James Bartek; five brothers; and two sisters.

Libbie is survived by son Larry Bartek of Poteet; daughters Bea White of Temple and Joyce Brammer of Waco; sister Ella Hejl of Temple; grandchildren Dawn Heitman, Steven Vasek, Brandon, Monte, and Casey Bartek, Codi Crouch, Bryon Moore, Kevin and Scott Curry; step-grandchildren Randy White and Krista White; seven great-grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren.

Libbie will be greatly missed. She was a grand lady. She worked tirelessly for SPJST Lodge 177, Academy, and her church. She was a member of our lodge from day one.

She even helped build some of the walls that still stand at the lodge hall.

Libbie worked in the kitchen until she was 88 years old, and if her walking hadn’t stopped her, she would have worked right on.

Libbie was named SPJST State Fraternalist of the Year in 1995. She was proud of this award as were her

Resolution of Sympathy Lodge 9, Snook members wish to express our deep sorrow and sympathy to the family of our departed sister, REYNALDA JANAC. Funeral services for Reynalda Z. (Fojt) Janac, 93, of Bryan and a former resident of Snook, were held at 10 a.m. on Friday, January 12, 2007, at Snook Brethren Church in Snook with Reverend Joseph Polasek officiating.

Burial followed in the Snook Cemetery.

Mrs. Janac died Tuesday, January 9 at Sherwood Health Care in Bryan.

She was born May 31, 1913, in the Merle community, the daughter of Frank and Mary Bravenec Fojt. She attended school in Snook and Bryan and graduated from Somerville High School in 1932.

She was married to Frank B. Janac

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband on August 10, 1988; two brothers; and four sisters.

Survivors include sister Libbie Nedbalek of Austin; sister-in-law Milady Janac of College Station; two nieces; two nephews; and numerous other relatives.

Dear Readers, We held our meeting on February 4, 2007, at 1:30 p.m. Tiffany Moore led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

The applicants needed their scholarship papers turned in by February 1, and SPJST Camp Tee-Shirt Design Contest entries were also due that day.

We held a valentine party on Friday, February 9. The cakes for the February birthday party at the nursing home were brought Wednesday, February 7.

Our next meeting will be March 4 at 11 a.m. at the Wild West Steakhouse. Everyone needs to bring two dozen cookies for our soldiers who are overseas.

Lodge 17, New Tabor Youth Make Valentines for Veterans

Lodge 17, New Tabor Youth Club members designed and created many valentines which were presented to the Valentines for Veterans program at the Temple VA Hospital.

Dear Vestnik friends, My Mi-Ma and Paw-Paw came to the February SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis Youth Club meeting.

Paw-Paw Kenneth Houdek sang and taught us to sing A Ja Sam. Blake played the accordion. Now, I can sing A Ja Sam when they play it on the Polka Radio Show and at the dances. Paw-Paw said that the youth did good singing the song.

We decorated valentine hearts for our craft. They were pretty and fun to make. I made mine with glitter glue, ribbons, cupids, color pens, heart sequins, and small cut-out hearts.

We also celebrated Mardi Gras.

We got all different kinds of necklaces to wear—short, long, small beads, big beads, shiny! I love them all.

We played a valentine’s matching game. For snack, we ate a birthday cake for Dustin, valentine cookies, and colored kisses. Yummy!

Lodge 25, Ennis youth celebrates 10th birthday Dear Readers, I did not go to the February meeting because I went to my daddy’s.

The youth club made me a brownie cake for my birthday, and Mommy brought the piece with my name on it home for me to eat. It was really good.

I went to the January meeting, and we made penguin piggy banks. Mine looked like some of the penguins from “Happy Feet”.

Friday, February 16 is my 10th birthday. Me, Tori, and Mommy went to Main Event in Fort Worth for my birthday. It was a lot of fun. I got a dragon for a prize. Then, I will get to have a party on Friday, and hopefully, get lots of presents!

Lodge 25, Ennis Lodge 185 youth learns about New Braunfels different cultures youth enjoy ice skating social Dear Readers, Hi! I hope everybody gets a lot of cards and candy for Valentine’s Day. I already wrote my cards out for school, and I’m giving suckers, too.

This month’s Lodge 25, Ennis Youth Club meeting was on the day I went to Daddy’s so I didn’t get to go.

But, Mommy went and said everybody made valentine ornaments.

We made penguins at the January meeting, and that was the project our family was in charge of. They looked really cute, and it finally got rid of a bunch of our socks that we outgrew.

We used the socks for a hat.

I am in Girl Scouts, too, and have been selling cookies. For my badge, I chose to do a badge on different cultures. I am going to interview my great-great-grandma and ask about her Czech culture. I already have my questions written down. I am going to interview some people about other cultures, too, but I’m not sure who yet.

For my snack, Mommy is going to show me how to make a strudel, and I want to bring some kolaches, too.

My favorites are poppyseed.

Lodge 202 Jourdanton Youth Club reports on meetings January 7 Meeting Lodge 202, Jourdanton Youth Club met on January 7, 2007, at the Jourdanton Community Center. The youth visited and worked on Vestnik projects.

Travis Barta assisted the youth club by taking the roll. The youth members voted to participate in the Strawberry Festival parade in Poteet.

Youth Leader Regina House will request the SPJST Float.

The youth stayed for the adult lodge meeting and assisted with clean-up afterwards.

Youth were reminded to bring breakfast items for the District Seven Spring Meeting, hosted by Lodge 202, Jourdanton on March 4 at the Jourdanton Community Center. All are encouraged to assist with set-up at 9 a.m.

District Seven Assistant Youth Counselor Belenda Barta reminded the members that they must attend seven meetings to attend camp at no charge. District Seven Camp will be held at Woodman of the World Camp in Bandera June 7 to 10.

District Seven YAD will be held July 15 in Floresville.

Lodge 185, New Braunfels Youth Club Delivers Cheers to Shelly and Kelly Dear Friends, Lodge 185, New Braunfels Youth Club had a special January meeting to have a “glad you are getting better” party for member Kelly Dangerfield and her mother, Shelly. They were in a bad car accident in October, and Shelly has had to have several operations.

We knew that Shelly and Kelly liked chocolate and food of any kind, so we packed up and moved our meet-

ing to Shelly’s sister’s house where they are staying and healing.

It was a lot of fun. We had chips, dips, cookies, and drinks. The smiles on Kelly’s and Shelly’s faces were wonderful.

Please keep them in your prayers because Shelly has to have several more operations.

Naše dopisovatelka v angličtině Lori Najvarová upozornila na naši novou webstránku a podobu pečeti.

Roger Kolář podal zprávu činnosti poradního výboru při Texaské universitě. Učení češtiny se pěkně rozběhlo a zdá se, že nejvíce úspěšný byl letní program v Praze, kdy studenti spolupracovali s Filmovou akademií musických umění v Praze, ČR. Studenti vyšli do ulic Prahy a filmovali náhodné chodce na ulicích a tak se snažili mluvít česky. Všichni prošli kursem filmu. Všech 18 studentů, kteří se zúčastnili kursu, bylo velmi nadšeno touto změmou a tři z nich se přihlásili do češtiny. Filmování však nemá češtinu jako součást kursu. Profesor Andrew Garrison velmi úspěšně vedl tuto část letního pobytu, Michal Bregant a Otto Urban vyučovali předměty zájmu.

Tento program bude asi poněkud rozšířen a vyučovat bude ne jenom profesor Garrison, ale i další texaský profesor a český podíl bude také rozšířen.

Zájemci o vyučování češtiny jezdí do Brna na Masarykovu universitu na Moravě. Na fakultě je nová pomocnice Elana ThurstonMilgramová, která je velmi oblíbená mezi studenty.

Hodnota stipendia na českou stolici se zvýšila na asi 2 a půl milionu dolarů. Z této částky se platí platy Craiga Cravena a Eleny české stolice by těžko mohli učit češtinu pro několik studentů ve třídě, avšak fond pro stolici umožn’uje nejen vyučování, ale i letní práci. Předsedkyně volební komise Anna Krpocová přednesla výsledky voleb a bylo zjištěno, že všichni kandidáti uvedeni na volební listině byli zvoleni takřka jednohlasně. Členstvo

schválilo výsledky voleb hlasováním.

V této chvíli byla představena Sarah Middlebrooková z Westu, která je vítězkou soutěže o titul Miss české a slovenské Ameriky a s ní byla představena i Allison Šuláková, která bude soutěžit ve Wilberu v Nebrasce toto léto.

Společnost českého dědictví i povzbuzuje mladá děvčata v této soutěži a připojují patřičné odměny a ceny k jejich zvolení.

Organisátorka soutěže v Texasu Kathy Podsedníková upozornila přítomné, aby zvali účastnice soutěže na

jejich festivaly a slavnosti. Sarah Middlebrooková poděkovala krajanům za podporu a za překrásné zkušenosti, které nabyla během doby od zvolení československou královnou krásy Ameriky.

President Slovanské podporující jednoty státu Texasu Brian Vaníček promluvil ke shromážděným a blahopřál nadaci k ustano vení katedry české hudby a kultury na Severotexaské universitě. Připomněl, že mnozí členové jednoty podporují a pracují pro nadaci a jednota bude i nadále

Generální konsul České republiky v Texasu Ray Snokhous vy světlil, že v minulém roce při zájezdu do Texasu velvyslanec přivezl finanční podporu pro postižené oblasti Alabamy, Luisiany a Texasu hurikánem Kathrinou. Pomohl obnovit knihovnu na škole v Louisianě. Velvyslanectví má nyní jiné myšlenky a činnost ve srovnání s předcházejícími postupy.

Pak jsme se odebrali k odhalení desky se jmény hlavních finančních podporovatelů. K tomu jsme opět vyslechli projevy presidentky university Bataillové, vysloužilého presidenta nadace Marvina Marka, předsedy Sboru ředitelů nadace Clintona Machánně, Dra. Jima Bezděka a pořad řídil děkan James C. Scott. Pro účastníky slavnosti pak zahráli studenti několik skladeb starších i nových českých skladatelů, dokonce jeden student, Jiří Levíček z Brna na Moravě, přednesl vlastní skladbu pro piáno, basu a bicí. Je narozený v roce 1984 a prokazuje značný hudební talent.

Po koncertu následoval oběd a krátce po skončení chutného oběda proběhla ještě schůze Sboru starých i novězvolených ředitelů nadace. Sbor ředitelů prověřil volební listiny a úředníci pro další období naší nadace následují: presidentem nadace je Woody Smith, vice presidentkou je Diane Šuláková-Wilson, tajemník Paul T: Hlavinka, pokladníkem Anton Pustějovský, odborným poradcem Sidney Kacíř, českým dopisovatelem Jan Vaculík, anglicky píšící dopisovatelkou Lori Najvarová, Clinton Machann je předseda Sboru ředitelů.

Většinu zpráv o činnosti podali úředníci v první části slavnosti a proto jsme projednali jenom jejich připomínky a nechali promluvit hosty. Nová studentka anglistiky Hana Waisserová poděkovala nadaci za podporu při jejích studiích a že se velmi dobře cítí v Texasu, protože lidi si pamatují tradice, hudbu a jídla z Moravy a dokonce i starší lidé se učí česky, aby mohli učit vnoučata.

Tony Pustějovský je připraven uložit jakýkoliv finanční prostředek do pokladny nadace, případně i jiné možnosti jsou nyní otevřeny. Zvláště potěšující by byly příspěvky od hudebníků a hudeb ních těles v Texasu a v Americe a i ve světě, aby bud’ nadace anebo i někdo jiný mohl přispět ke částce 400 tisíc na katedře a

aby se činnost na katedře mohla případně i rozvinout v širším měřítku.

Jeho dcera byla přítomna a zkoušela, jestli by pasovala mezi nás, starší už papriky, a povzbudila nás k lepší činnosti. Potřebujeme mládež a mladé krajany k pokračování v naší činnosti. Adresa Tonyho Pustějovského je výše uvedena.

Mezi novými návrhy ke změně činnosti byla i změna data výroční schůze, protože leden je velmi nebezpečný měsíc v Texasu a mnohdy je náledí a sníh v severní části Texasu. Jarní nebo letní doba je příznivější pro schůzování, rovněž je nutno dokončit stanovy nadace, aby každý mohl rozeznat účel a úsilí naší nadace. Máme do konce i razítko a pečet’, jak je možno vidět na jiném místě zprávy.

Blinn College offers Czech class A Conversational Czech II language class is being offered this spring semester on the Blinn College Schulenburg campus.

A continuation of the Czech I beginner’s class, the Czech II class will meet Tuesdays 7 to 9 p.m. from February 20 to April 24 in Room 102 on the Blinn campus. No class will be held during the week of spring break, March 12 to 16.

The cost is $59. The instructor is Thadious Polasek.

CHS Library to show Dobry Vojak Svejk February 28 Our February movie at the CHS Library will be Dobry Vojak Svejk.

The story of this movie deeply touched the national identity of the Czechs just as World War I was beginning. Svejk is an ordinary Czech fellow who upon hearing of the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand, knows that spells deep trouble for a fellow like him . . . the emperor has secret agents everywhere reporting on people and throwing them in jail on the slightest suspicion and as the war gears up, the army is seeking to draft every man whether he is able or not. So Svejk comes up with an ingenious method of appearing super loyal while at the same time, maintaining a clever guise of dumbness that keeps him as far away from the front as possible.

Come and see this enjoyable comedy at the CHS Library, located at 4117 Willowbend in Houston,Texas.

The language is in Czech, but it has English subtitles. As always, the movie is free. Showtime is on Wednesday, February 28 at 7 p.m.
