Editor’s Note

The Pickle Jar Thanks to Lodge 88, Houston member Dorothy Pflughaupt for sharing this amazing story called “The Pickle Jar.” Traditions are very important to families. I hope SPJST is one of your family traditions!

The pickle jar as far back as I can remember sat on the floor beside the dresser in my parents’ bedroom. When he got ready for bed, Dad would empty his pockets and toss his coins into the jar.

As a small boy, I was always fascinated at the sounds the coins made as they were dropped into the jar. They landed with a merry jingle when the jar was almost empty. Then, the tones gradually muted to a dull thud as the jar was filled.

I used to squat on the floor in front of the jar and admire the copper and silver circles that glinted like a pirate’s treasure when the sun poured through the bedroom window. When the jar was filled, Dad would sit at the kitchen table and roll the coins before taking them to the bank.

Taking the coins to the bank was always a big production. Stacked neatly in a small cardboard box, the coins were placed between Dad and me on the seat of his old truck.

Each and every time, as we drove to the bank, Dad would look at me hopefully.

“Those coins are going to keep you out of the textile mill, son. You’re going to do better than me. This old mill town’s not going to hold you back.” Also, each and every time, as he slid the box of rolled coins across the counter at the bank toward the cashier, he would grin proudly. “These are for my son’s college fund. He’ll never work at the mill all his life like me.”

We would always celebrate each deposit by stopping for an ice cream cone. I always got chocolate. Dad always got vanilla.

When the clerk at the ice cream parlor handed Dad his change, he would show me the few coins nestled in his palm “When we get home, we’ll start filling the jar again.” He always let me drop the first coins into the empty jar. As they rattled around with a brief, happy jingle, we grinned at each other. “You’ll get to college on pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters,” he said. “But you’ll get there. I’ll see to that.”

The years passed, and I finished college and took a job in another town. Once, while visiting my parents, I used the phone in their bedroom, and noticed that the pickle jar was gone. It had served its purpose and had been removed.

A lump rose in my throat as I stared at the spot beside the dresser where the jar had

always stood. My dad was a man of few words and never lectured me on the values of determination, perseverance, and faith.

The pickle jar had taught me all these virtues far more eloquently than the most flowery of words could have done.

When I married, I told my wife Susan about the significant part the lowly pickle jar had played in my life as a boy. In my mind, it defined, more than anything else, how much my dad had loved me. No matter how rough things got at home, Dad continued to doggedly drop his coins into the jar. Even the summer when Dad got laid off from the mill, and Mama had to serve dried beans several times a week, not a single dime was taken from the jar.

To the contrary, as Dad looked across the table at me, pouring catsup over my beans to make them more palatable, he became more determined than ever to make a way out for me. “When you finish college, Son,” he told me, his eyes glistening, “You’ll never have to eat beans again unless you want to.”

The first Christmas after our daughter Jessica was born, we spent the holiday with my parents. After dinner, Mom and Dad sat next to each other on the sofa, taking turns cuddling their first grandchild. Jessica began to whimper softly, and Susan took her from Dad’s arms. “She probably needs to be changed,” she said, carrying the baby into my parents’ bedroom to diaper her.

When Susan came back into the living room, there was a strange mist in her eyes.

She handed Jessica back to Dad before taking my hand and leading me into the room.

“Look,” she said softly, her eyes directing me to a spot on the floor beside the dresser.

To my amazement, there, as if it had never been removed, stood the old pickle jar, the bottom already covered with coins. I walked over to the pickle jar, dug down into my pocket, and pulled out a fistful of coins.

With a gamut of emotions choking me, I dropped the coins into the jar. I looked up and saw that Dad, carrying Jessica, had slipped quietly into the room. Our eyes locked, and I knew he was feeling the same emotions I felt. Neither one of us could speak.

This truly touched my heart. I hope it has yours as well. Sometimes we are so busy adding up our troubles that we forget to count our blessings. Never underestimate the power of your actions. With one small gesture, you can change a person’s life, for better or for worse.

Thanks, Lodge 202, Jourdanton Youth Club!

I have expressed our sincere I would like to share with you a thanks to the Bartas and the

wonderful story! We are CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) of South Texas, a small non-profit that speaks for abused and neglected children in court in Atascosa, Wilson, Frio, and LaSalle Counties. Because we have no shelters or foster homes in this area, the children who are removed from their homes by Child Protective Services are taken many miles away and cannot see their friends or family very often.

We know Christmas is often difficult for them, so we always make a special point of visiting them around the holidays. But for the last few years, we did not go empty-handed— thanks to the SPJST Lodge 202, Jourdanton Youth Club! This club has consistently provided wrapped shoeboxes full of special age-appropriate goodies for all the children in our care. Attached are pictures of how beautiful the boxes are!

Jourdanton youth group, but I would also like to let you all know how significant this project has been for our community. The Jourdanton group has done other things for us as well, but the shoebox project has such a direct positive impact on the children because of the Christmas season.

We are so appreciative of Lodge 202 and all it has done for CASA of South Texas. “Children helping children” is such a wonderful ideal, and this Christmastime project is a perfect example of this concept in its finest form.

Thank you for all you do! And, thank you for SPJST Lodge 202 in Jourdanton!

SPJST records 4,133 applications written in Action ’06 campaign Through the end of December, the SPJST has received 4,133 applications for insurance certificates. The goal of the Action ’06 membership drive of 2,625 was met in September. The Action ’06 membership drive ended December 31.

In conjunction with SPJST’s Action ’06 program, local lodges were assigned application goals for the year. The lodge goal was based largely on past performance and perceived potential.

The last column, “Youth Club Application Count,” applies to those lodges with youth clubs and reflects applications written for members between the ages of 0 and 17 through June. “Youth Club” totals are applied toward the lodge’s total goal. The fourth column, “Lodge Incentive Count,” reflects the number of new certificates issued for the Lodge Recognition and Incentive Program.

We were very honored to have as our guest State FAC Chester Jenke and his lovely wife, Colleen. Mr. Jenke brought to us information about upcoming events including the big bowling tournament on February 17 in Austin. Brother Jenke also mentioned the SPJST Awards Banquet in February.

Brother Jenke installed the officers for 2007. Pictures were taken.

This meeting was our Christmas celebration which had been postponed in December. All members present enjoyed an evening of fellowship, food, and laughter.

Lodge 9, Snook reports on January meeting Lodge 9, Snook President Donnie Hejl called the meeting to order at 7:35 p.m. Grace, Emily, and Robert Lewis and Hannah Kovar led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance.

There was a moment of silence held for Milady Hyvl.

Ann Schoeneman read the minutes of the last meeting, and they stood approved as read. David Kovar gave the hall manager’s report. Donnie Victorick gave the treasurer’s report.

Marie Shelfer gave the youth club report. There were 42 members, one guest, and 21 adults present. The youth brought coats and blankets for the needy, and items to send a care package overseas. District One Camp will be held July 26 to 29.

Naylor Floor Company will refurbish the floors the week of January 15.

We accepted one new member.

The rewiring project is just about complete.

ENC names Sherrie Kubala Watkins Corporate Developmental Consultant Sherrie Kubala Watkins, a longtime member of the SPJST and businesswoman in the Denton, Texas, area has been hired by the SPJST Education and Nature Center (ENC). The ENC, a 501(c)(3), expects to locate land and raise the necessary funds to build a culture and nature retreat.

T h e announcement was made by the ENC Directors, whose representatives are District One— Randal Gaas, Chairman; District Two— Otis Beck, Vice Chairman; District Three— John Engelke, Treasurer; District Four—Keith Williams; District Five—Jo Ann Buri; District Six—Lisa Bubela, Secretary; and District Seven— Frances McDonald.

“I have a tremendous belief in the SPJST youth and its membership,

and I will help the ENC realize its goals,” Ms. Watkins says.

Ms. Watkins, a native of Pilot Point and a member of SPJST Lodge 92, Fort Worth, has served as vice chairman of the Denton County Economic Development Commission.

She has worked in the securities and corporate division of Akin, Gump, Strauss, Hauer & Feld Law Office. She has also worked as a commercial real estate and land development consultant in Denton County.

As administrative assistant to the president of Realty Investment, Inc., she worked in Beverly Hills, California, and Zurich, Switzerland.

Ms. Watkins attended the University of North Texas and Texas Christian University.

District Six Raises $3,500 for Scholarship Endowment Fund

Lodge 18, Elgin elects officers President Ray Nelson opened the Lodge 18, Elgin meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance and a prayer for all members—living and deceased.

Dotia read the minutes, Theresa gave the treasurer’s report, and both were approved as read. Irene gave the house report and thanked everyone who helped her with the rentals.

Charles gave the report for Gladys in her absence.

The Christmas dance was a big success. Everyone enjoyed the meal furnished by the lodge. Special thanks to Johnny. He prepared all the chicken salad for the sandwiches.

Thank you to all those who brought dishes for the meal.

We will take down the decorations after the New Year’s Eve dance.

Everyone who can help is asked to be at the hall on Wednesday, January 3 at 3 p.m. We had many compliments on the hall decorations. Thanks to all who helped decorate. You made it possible to help spread the Christmas cheer.

The funds were raised from the District Six Bowling Tournament and raffle held in September. SFR Kaspar served as the raffle chairman.

Evelyn sent a get well card to former President Dolly Hajda. We hope she is better and had a good holiday.

Our youth handed out Christmas cards that they made. Thanks! They were great. They made cards for the assisted living and the nursing home, also. Aren’t they great!

Lodge 24, Cyclone plans Mardi Gras fund-raiser Our regular monthly meeting for Lodge 24, Cyclone was held Monday, January 8, 2007, at 6:30 p.m. at Flag Hall in Cyclone, Texas. The meeting was called to order by President Daniel Wilde.

Minutes of the last meeting were read by Secretary Margaret Mikeska.

The minutes were approved as read.

The members present discussed our upcoming fund-raiser—Mardi Gras!—that will be held on Saturday, February 10. Hall manager Wilbert Mikeska reported that our last two events were very successful, one of them being our annual New Year’s Eve dance which sold 518 tickets. Lodge 80, Holland gives to community SPJST Lodge 80, Holland was called to order on January 6, 2007, at 4:05 p.m. by President Doni Powell.

The membership stood for the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence for departed members. All officers were present. Director Curtis Wolf was absent.

Secretary Linda Hill read the minutes of the December meeting. They were approved as read.

Treasurer Jewel Wolf gave the financial report.

Linda Hill read a thank you from Melany Cearley with the Holland ISD. FAC Paula Weir reported that Bowl for the Cure will be held in Austin on February 17. Also, Lodge 47, Seaton will hold the annual tarok tournament on January 20.

Three new members were voted into Lodge 80 in a motion by Frank Pajestka, Jr., seconded by Jim Wiest.

In a motion by Jim Wiest, seconded by Connie Horak, the membership agreed to raise the price of desserts on bingo nights from 50 cents to 75 cents.

President Powell stated that Suzy Wiest is the new assistant Girl Scout leader and asked for help in getting the Girl Scout started in Holland. In a motion by Danny Hendrix, seconded by Frank Pajestka, Jr., the membership agreed to give $200. They will be allowed to sell cookies on bingo night.

Lodge 49, Rowena Christmas Friday, December 15, 2006 • Lodge 49, Rowena Hall Lodge 49, Rowena celebrated Christmas on December 15 at the lodge hall.

A delicious meal of ham, turkey, dressing, and all the trimmings was served to approximately 35 members and guests. The meal was prepared by Eddie Mae Huebner, Lula Marecek, Jackie Pospichal, Laura Pospichal, and Beverly Teplicek. Members attending brought a great variety of desserts. The young people were treated to a gift bag filled with fruit and treats. Cards, dominos, and visiting were enjoyed by all in attendance.

SPJST Deer Antler Contest Contest Dates: November 1, 2006, through January 31, 2007.

This contest is for SPJST members, and only Texas white-tailed deer entries are eligible. There will be two categories for entries: free range deer and high-fenced deer. By definition, a high-fenced deer is one that has been raised primarily in an enclosure. An enclosure can be described as, but not limited to, an 8-foot (or higher) fence and can come in a variety of acreage sizes.

Each category will have two $50 winners – one for widest spread (measured outside to outside at the widest point) and one for most points (point must be at least one inch to be legal).

We had a wonderful two-for-one raffle. The first raffle was on Czech Day. We raffled off a quilt, Pilsner beer, and basket of SPJST goodies— and more prizes would be given away at the Holiday Christmas Blue Room Party. The second raffle was even bigger—a ladies spa basket, Simi Cabernet Sauvignon wine, pack of long necks beer, Christmas tree scratch-off tickets, and many more prizes. Thank you, Johnny Broz and Barbara Gonzales, for handling the raffle. You both did a great job.

We also had a great silent auction, and this could not have been done without the following people’s contributions: Josh and Sandy Millstein, Stan and Debbie Horton, and Edna Wehring. We appreciate your contributions, and thank you for all the outstanding prizes.

It was time to close down the silent auction and draw for the raffle, but before we did that, we had some door prizes to give away. Everyone started checking under all the chairs to see if they had the special words of “door prize winner.” The winners were all

Lodge 133 San Antonio meets January 21 Lodge 107 Floresville youth bags first deer Lodge 107, Floresville Youth Club President Lian Pruski shot her first buck this deer season.

Its antlers had seven points, a spread of 18 inches, and field dressed 160 pounds. Lian is the daughter of Glen and Wendy Pruski and the granddaughter of District Seven Director Bob Bayer and wife Polly. All are members of Lodge 107, Floresville.

Lodge 133, San Antonio will meet this Sunday, January 21, 2007, at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church Activity Center, located at 1630 Goliad Road in San Antonio. The meeting will begin at 2 p.m. See you there!

The minutes of the October meeting were read by Secretary Daniel Roznovsky and approved by the membership. Daniel Roznovsky read a thank you note from the State Fair of Texas for our advertisement in their brochure.

Ann Pustejovsky gave the bar/kitchen report as well as the treasurer’s report for the Bingo, Charity and 183 Club accounts. Angeline Stiborek gave the financial secretary’s report for this month showing 21 new members and seven terminations.

Ann Pustejovsky gave the FAC report in the absence of Milka Bralic. She informed the membership about the deer antler contest, the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive, the various state tournaments, the SPJST Holiday Open House, and the Awards Banquet on Saturday, February 24 at the Killeen Convention Center.

Kay Gerlich Weeks gave the youth report. The youth participated at the District Three Fall Meeting at Lodge 92 on October 22 by competing in the Halloween costume, cake decorating, and Christmas ornament contests.

Congratulations to Katelyn Daniel for winning second place in her age category in the Christmas ornament contest. The youth will plan to have a pizza party, hold their monthly meeting, and decorate the hall on Friday, December 8. They will present a program at the lodge Christmas party and have their annual 50/50 raffle. The SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive is going on. The Camp TeeShirt Design Contest is in process with the 2007 youth program theme “SPJST -Rockin ’07.” Our youth will be attending Holiday in the Park at Six Flags with the District Three youth on December 16.

Ashley Horner, Brian Fails exchange vows Ashley Dawn Horner and Brian Hunter Fails were married on October 7, 2006, at the Chisolm Ranch in Proctor, Texas, in a beautiful outdoor wedding.

Ashley is the daughter of Mike Horner, granddaughter of Linda and James Horner, and great-granddaughter of Lucille Kret of Saginaw, Texas.

The bride and groom are both attending Cisco Junior College and are making their home in Comanche, Texas.

Ashley is a lifelong member of SPJST Lodge 154, Fort Worth.

Under new business, Raymond Mikeska reported that we have purchased a new refrigerator for the kitchen. He painted a new bingo sign in front of the building, put a handle on the water fountain; and fixed the trim in the lobby. He reported that the outdoor light has burned out over the back kitchen door.

Ann Pustejovsky reported that charitable donation presentations will be made at our Christmas party to Mission Arlington, Wish with Wings, and the Battered Women’s Shelter. In addition, we are donating the use of

Sunshine Committee Martha Phillips Congratulations to Ann Pustejovsky, who was selected to represent our lodge as Fraternalist of the Year. She is well-deserving of this award and will represent us well! The SPJST Awards Banquet will be held on Saturday, February 24, 2007, at the Killeen Convention Center.

Please mark your calendars for our lodge Christmas party to be held on Saturday, December 9. We will congregate at 6 p.m., and dinner will be served at 7 p.m. We will be serving ham, sausage, butter potatoes, and green beans. In addition, members are asked to bring a $10 item for the Chinese gift exchange. The youth will present a Christmas program and have a 50/50 raffle. Plus, Santa Claus will make his annual appearance and present gifts to the children.

The door prize was won by Chelsea Reed.

Family Social Night will not be held in November.

Since our annual Christmas party takes the place of our regular lodge meeting in December, our next lodge meeting will be on Monday, January 8 at 7 p.m.

Youth Leader Regina House reported that 25 shoeboxes were filled with toys and other goodies and were distributed to CASA for children for Christmas.

FAC Mary Ann Barta is excited that our lodge will have a bowling team for the tournament.

The lodge voted to donate $100 to the Atascosa County Junior Livestock Show.

Nightlights glowing like candles lighting the hall toward the dim silent kitchen the coffee pot stares with its one yellow eye a buddha on the counter flanked by disciples cream and sugar

The aroma sinks into the wood and rug and covers the kitchen like a winter fog morning is here The sun peeks over the fence a squirrel runs along the pickets the morning paper lies on the sidewalk like a limp wounded bird bound up in a blue rubber band

I pour water to the brim hit the switch and the pot begins to talk to me in baby talk the smell of fresh brewed coffee fills the air and soon the house is taken over nothing fancy no imported beans or blends just plain coffee packed in a red tin can The pungency of coffee hangs in the room and hints of tropical forests brown, volcanic soil men in sombreros

As I stoop to get it a smile turns up gold-lined clouds drift by in whispers the neighbors porch light comes on What really matters houses cars things?

I have the morning paper a cup of coffee and plenty of words to read.

In Memoriam Expression of Sympathy We, the members of the Resolution Committee of Lodge Hvezda Texasu No. 47, Seaton, Texas, on behalf of our membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed brother, JOE WILLIAM PECHAL. Services for Joe William Pechal, 89, of Temple were at 10 a.m.

Saturday, January 6, 2007, at Harper Talasek Funeral Home in Temple.

Burial was in Seaton Cemetery.

Visitation was from 6 to 8 p.m.

Friday, January 5 at Harper-Talasek.

He died Wednesday, January 3 in a Temple nursing home.

Mr. Pechal was born in Falls County to Joe and Rosie (Vitek) Pechal. He was a rancher and carpenter all of his life. He was a member of SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton and a Seaton school trustee.

His wife, Betty Pechal, preceded him in death.

Survivors are sons Larry Pechal and J.W. Pechal, Jr., both of Temple; daughters Janet Mabry and Betty Kellerman, both of Temple; brother Clarence Pechal; sisters Vallie Zavodny and Lorene Kotrla; five grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Resolution Committee Dorothy Pechal Joyce Skrabanek LaVerne Vanicek —SPJST—

Expression of Sympathy The officers and members of SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis express their heartfelt sympathy to the family and friends of FRANK GEORGE TROJACEK. Frank George Trojacek passed away in Rowlett, Texas, on December 10, 2006.

Frank was born in Ennis, Texas, on June 17, 1924, to Frank and Antonio Honza Trojacek. Frank was raised in Ennis and attended the St. John,

Telico, and Central High Schools.

He entered the United States Army in 1943 and trained at Camp Claiborne, Louisiana. He was assigned to Company A 1636th Engineering Construction Battalion. He served in England, France, Normandy, Luxembourg, Norway, the Philippines, and Japan.

Frank received three bronze stars while serving in the Army.

He was discharged in 1946 and started farming for a brief time.

Frank worked for the Ennis Daily News in Ennis for 42 years before retiring.

Frank was preceded in death by his wife Agnes Miklis on August 2, 2005; and by his son David Trojacek.

Frank is survived by daughters Irene Neal of Dallas and Janice Matthews and husband Randy of Rowlett; sisters Ruby Janicek of Terrell and Olga Patak of Dallas; grandchildren Lindsey and Nathan Redden, Jason and Samantha Trojacek, and Jessica Trojacek; greatgrandchild Ian Trojacek; and many other relatives and friends.

A memorial has been made to the SPJST Scholarship Fund in memory of Frank G. Trojacek.

Resolution of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge 48, Beyersville, Texas, and on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our deepest and most sincere sympathy to the family and friends of our departed lodge brother, RICHARD BATLA, age 90, of Taylor, Texas, who passed away Saturday, December 30, 2006, at Johns Community Hospital.

Family visitation was held on Tuesday, January 2, 2007, from 6 to 7 p.m. at Providence Funeral Home.

Celebration of life services were held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, January 3 at Taylor Brethren Church with the Reverend James Hejl officiating. Burial followed at Taylor City Cemetery.

Richard was born July 17, 1916, in Granger to Joseph and Emily Vitek Batla. He married Christine Turek on August 26, 1941, at the Granger

Brethren Church, a marriage that would last 60 years. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who loved gardening, helping bake kolaches at the church, and playing 42 domino tournaments with his wife Christine. He also enjoyed traveling, cooking, and working on things that needed to be repaired. In his younger adult life, he was very much into the Czech (calisthenics) Sokol. He loved playing with his grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. His eyes always lit up when the great-grandchildren came to see him.

He was a member of SPJST Lodge 48, Beyersville. Richard worked for many years as a mechanic and parts manager for the Dodge/Pontiac dealership.

He used his knowledge as a mechanic to teach his grandson Bill Pfeiffer, Jr. to work on cars, trucks, and lawn mowers and told him he would have this learning to fall back on.

When Christine passed away, he took his granddaughter Christine Sutherland with him to play dominos, go visit people, and take walks together. They had many lunch dates together. He could always go and talk with her when he felt lonely.

Richard was a deeply religious man and liked working with the church. He was a member of the Taylor Brethren Church. He had a very calming nature about him and never got impatient with anyone or anything. Even though he only had an eighth grade education, he was a very intelligent man. He had a love for life and lived life to the fullest.

He always kept busy even after he retired.

Richard is survived by daughter Jeanette Sutherland and husband Richard of Taylor; grandchildren, Bill Pfeiffer, Jr. and partner Tonya Avery, and Christie Sutherland, all of Taylor; step-grandchildren Rick Sutherland and partner Mary Esther Middleton, and Joe Sutherland and wife Katarina, all of Austin; greatgrandchildren Hannah Pfeiffer of Giddings, Cooper Sutherland, Ian Sutherland, and Shea Sutherland, all of Austin; sister Henrietta Machalek of Laramie, Wyoming; sisters-in-law Elfie Stauffer and husband Harry of Thrall, and Louise Batla of Taylor; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and brothers August, Victor, Stanley, and Joe Batla.

Pallbearers were Bobby Wuensche, A.J. Batla, Vince Batla, Richard Machalek, Curtis Stauffer, and Jerry Turek.

Expression of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge 154, Fort Worth, express our sincere and heartfelt sympathy to the family of REUBIN D. JENKINS, 74, a retired painter, who died Tuesday, January 9, 2007, at a Fort Worth hospital.

Funeral services were held at 6 p.m. Thursday, January 11 at Biggers Funeral Chapel. Burial was in Green Acres Memorial Park in Cleburne. Reubin Jenkins Visitation was held 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, January 10 at Biggers Funeral Home.

Mr. Jenkins was born November 7, 1932, in Fort Worth, and was a lifelong area resident. He was a graduate of Northside High School and was a member of SPJST Lodge 154, Fort Worth and the Rosen Heights Baptist Church. He was an active member of the Democratic Party and had served as a precinct chairman for a number of years.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte G. Jenkins, on February 13, 2006.

Survivors include his children, Sabrina Jenkins of Saginaw, Arthur B. Jenkins and wife Gemma of Las Vegas, Nevada, Scott A. Jenkins of Fort Worth, and Sandra Riedesel and husband Michael of Kennesaw, Georgia; sister Margaret Wilson of Saginaw; brother Robert Jenkins of Pasadena; and grandchildren Kelly Riedesel and Jackson Riedesel.

In Memory of Gregory Machu Gregory Keith Machu, age 43, follower of Jesus Christ, loyal husband, father, son, brother, and uncle died early Sunday morning, December 31, 2006, following a courageous battle with cancer. He was born on November 13, 1963, in Austin, Texas to Darwin and Nancy Bryan Machu.

He graduated from Lanier High School and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the University of Texas at Austin and a Masters of Business Administration from St. Edwards University.

On July 27, 1996, he was united in

marriage to Dawn Mynar at the Bryan-College Station Brethren Church. On May 11, 2000, God blessed Greg and Dawn with a wonderful son, Colton, and in 2004, the family moved to Georgetown, Texas.

His innate knowledge of computers allowed him to excel as a software support team leader with Texas Mutual Insurance Company.

A member of San Gabriel Presbyterian Church in Georgetown, he appreciated the compassion of this church family and enjoyed its men’s group. His love of the outdoors was heightened by many years at summer church camp, both as a camper and as a counselor. He enjoyed singing and used his full, wonderful voice to sing praises to his creator God.

Greg was a people person who never sought the spotlight for himself.

He would start a conversation with anyone, believing that all had unique qualities that were worth his time and attention. Greg was a rabid Texas Longhorn fan, who loved going to the football games with his family. Above all, he loved his wife and son and took great pride in providing for them.

Greg is survived by wife Dawn; son Colton; parents Darwin and Nancy Machu of Round Rock; sister and brother-in-law Rhonda and Bobby Roten of Round Rock; nieces, Megan and Mackenzie Roten of Round Rock; godparents, Uncle Daniel and Aunt Sadie Blaha of Taylor; parents-in-law Leroy and Pat Mynar of Bryan; sister-in-law

Shannon Mynar and fiance Patrick Wallace of Richmond; and best friend Mark Olsen of Taylor.

Visitation was held Tuesday, January 2 from 6 to 8 p.m. at The Gabriels Funeral Chapel in Georgetown, Texas. Funeral services were Wednesday, January 3 at 1:30 p.m. at the San Gabriel Presbyterian Church in Georgetown, Texas.

Interment was at the Machu Cemetery near Granger, Texas.

Donations may be made to either the Colton Machu Education Fund (City National Bank, P. O. Box 1099, Taylor, Texas 76574) or to the San Gabrial Presbyterian Church Building Fund.

District Two Skating Party: February 11

Discussion was brought up about the youth club donating to different charities.

Dear Members, It is time once again to see many of our friends from around the district.

Our last gathering was at the lock-in which seems like such a long time ago. I am looking forward to seeing all of you at our annual District Two Skating Party on Sunday, February 11, 2007, at Skate Haven in Temple. The time is from 5:15 to 7:15 p.m.

Each year, this activity seems to get bigger and better. Hopefully, we will have the biggest turnout ever. Please bring a friend who is not an SPJST member and maybe he or she will meet so many neat people and have so much fun that he/she will want to join your youth club. Think of the points you can get at this one activity if you talk them into joining. If you are not a skater, come anyway.

All youth will be in a drawing for many door prizes. Who knows—you may win a chocolate heart or a teddy bear for your sweetheart! There will be all sorts of prizes. This is one social where everyone is a winner.

I hope to see you all at Skate Haven on Sunday, February 11!

Lodge 6 Cottonwood Youth Club reports on January meeting Dear Readers, We held our youth meeting on Sunday, January 7, 2007. All reports were in order. The SPJST Camp TeeShirt Design Contest ends on January 31. All high seniors need to have

Lodge 18, Elgin Youth Club gives to community Dear Vestnik Readers, On November 21, 2006, Lodge 18, Elgin Youth Club gave $100 to the Elgin Food Pantry.

In December, we did a lot of things! We delivered Christmas ornaments to Elgin Golden Years.

Then on December 21, we gave them a $100 donation. Also, on the 21st, we gave $100 to Blue Santa and had our Christmas party. I know everyone had a blast and enjoyed the pizza.

On December 23, we delivered Christmas ornaments to the Taylor Assisted Living.

Now, these are the three donations the youth gave out this year; the Elgin Food Pantry, the Elgin Golden Years, and Blue Santa. We also gave $50 to the SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive.

I hope everyone had a great and merry Christmas, and I wish everyone a happy New Year!

Lodge 30, Taiton Youth Club reports on January meeting The January 7, 2007, meeting of SPJST Lodge 30, Taiton Youth Club was held at the Taiton Community Center at 2:05 p.m. The meeting was called to order by President Jarrett Dluhos.

Brandon Drapela led the Pledge of Allegiance, SPJST Motto, and prayer.

Treasurer Kenna Bubela gave the treasurer’s report. The dues report was given by Assistant Treasurer Steven Drapela.

Old Business It was noted that the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive donations will be taken up at the January meeting.

Members were also reminded to turn in their SPJST Camp Tee-shirt Design Contest forms by January 31, 2007.

New Business Members were given the following dates: April 29, 2007 SPJST District Six Spring Meeting hosted by Lodge 23, Moravia June 1 to 3, 2007 LIT Retreat at Hamman Ranch in Bandera, Texas June 15 to 17, 2007 District Six Camp Stoney Creek Ranch Columbus, Texas July 15, 2007 District Six Youth Achievement Day hosted by Lodge 30, Taiton August 4, 2007 State Youth Achievement Day Youth Leader’s Report Youth Leader Lisa Bubela reported that Lodge 30, Taiton’s Incentive Awards Banquet will be held on March 4. Set-up will begin at 9:30 a.m. The youth club meeting will begin at 10 a.m.; the meal will be served at 12 noon; and the adult meeting with award ceremony will begin at 1 p.m.

Brandon Drapela was the December birthday celebrant. Poems were read, and door prizes were exchanged.

Next Meeting—February 4 The next meeting will be held on February 4 at the Taiton Community Center at 2 p.m. The craft will be a valentine card with a poem inside.

The charity will be a valentine’s decoration to be given to the Czech

Catholic Home in Hillje, Texas.

Stephanie Fucik made a motion to adjourn the meeting, and it was seconded by Gerard Marcaurele. The meeting adjourned at 2:19 p.m., and refreshments were served.

Lodge 246 Morgan’s Point Youth Club plans activities Dear Members, Lodge 246, Morgan’s Point Youth Club won second place in the Lack’s Trim-a-Tree Contest in December.

Congratulations on a great job, youth members, and thanks to the lodges and community for all of the food donations.

The Christmas Open House was held at the Temple Cultural Activities Center on December 17. This was a terrific program. I hope everyone enjoyed the great performances.

Lodge 246 also had its Christmas party on December 17 at Las Casas in Temple. There was a great turn-out, and everyone had a great time.

We began the year with our first Adopt-a-Highway pickup on January 14.

The deadline for the SPJST Camp Tee-Shirt Design Contest is January 31.

We will deliver valentines to veterans on February. Watch for details.

Start thinking of ideas for our 2007 Join Hands Day project on May 5.

CHS Library to show “Babicka” January 31 Czech films will again be shown at the CHS Library, located at 4117 Willowbend in Houston, on each last Wednesday of the next five months.

The first film to be shown on January 31 will be Babicka based on the famous Czech novel by Bozena Nemcova. It is the story of a Czech grandmother teaching her grandchildren about old Czech sayings, folklore, and tales. It is one of the most traditional and beloved of all the Czech stories.

The Harris County Chapter of the Czech Heritage Society invites all who are interested in the Czech culture and language to come and attend these films. They are all subtitled in English and are free of charge. The performance begins at 7 p.m. Light refreshments are usually served.

These classes will be held each Thursday night for 12 weeks ending on April 19. The class will be from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Sokol Hall, located one mile east of Ennis on State Highway 34.

This is a very concentrated course that will cover pronunciation, grammar, reading, and vocabulary. It will also include presentations on Czech history and culture.

Although designed for beginners, advanced Czech language students will enjoy a good review. You do not have to be Czech to attend. Each student will receive printed handouts along with a progressive CD-ROM containing the class presentations for additional home study. Best of all, you grade your own work!

The class is free, and you are under no obligation to join or belong to any organization. All you need bring is a pencil and a desire to learn a little Czech. How much you learn will be up to you, as you will get plenty of material to study. The presentations will start promptly at 7 p.m., so come a little early for good seating. Please note, only the class attendees will receive the CD-ROMs. This is a similar course that has been taught in Fort Worth, West, and most recently in Dallas. The course is sponsored by the Ellis County Chapter of the Texas Czech Heritage Society and the Ennis Sokol organization and is being taught once again by Joe Janecka. Czech Heritage Society offers scholarship The Czech Heritage Society of Texas is accepting applications for the Victor Peter Memorial Scholarship.

The $500 stipend was established in memory of the late Victor Alfons Peter, who died in 1996. Peter was a retired businessman and a trustee of the Czech Heritage Society.

Following the Velvet Revolution in Czechoslovakia in 1989, he was instrumental in reestablishing relationships between the Czechs of Texas and the Old Country.

The Victor Peter Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a graduating high school senior to help further his or her education. As part of their application, students will write a 300-word essay about a prominent personality in Czech or Texas-Czech history. In addition, a high school transcript, two letters of recommendation, 200-word autobiography, a 100 word statement explaining what he or she plans to study in college/university, list of 10 ways in which he or she has had contact with Czech culture, and a cover sheet including the student’s name, address, phone number, and high school’s name, address and

phone number. Students do not have to be associated with the Czech Heritage Society or be of Czech origin to apply.

The Czech Heritage Society of Texas was founded in 1982 with the purpose of preserving and promoting Czech heritage in the state.

Wanted . . . young ladies of Czech and Slovak descent The Czech Heritage Society of Texas is seeking young ladies of Czech, Moravian, Silesian, or Slovak descent to serve as chapter queens and to compete for the title of Miss CzechSlovak Texas.

The purpose of the queen is to encourage youth involvement and represent the Czech Heritage Society of Texas at various events within the state or as directed, and at the National Miss Czech-Slovak USA Pageant in August held in Wilber, Nebraska.

This year’s Miss Czech-Slovak Texas will be selected at the spring state meeting of the Czech Heritage Society in Caldwell, Texas, on Saturday, April 21, 2007. The deadline for Chapter queens to enter the state competition is March 15, 2007.

Chapter deadlines will be earlier.

The contestants must be between 16 and 26 years of age prior to September 1, 2007. She must be attending high school, junior college, technical school, college, university, or be a high school graduate. She must be a citizen of the United States.

She must be an adult or youth member (as classified under parent or grandparent) of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas Chapter that she will represent. The young lady must possess and display a maximum of five minutes of a “live” talent presentation.

This may be singing, dancing, playing a musical instrument, dramatic reading, art display, dress designing, poetry, drawings, gymnastics, etc.

Contact your local chapter for more information on becoming a Chapter Queen and representing your county at the state level.

Austin Historical Association meets January 23 CHS sponsors essay contest The Czech Heritage Society of Texas is sponsoring an essay contest promoting Czech heritage for intermediate (grades seven to nine) and high school (grades 10 to 12) students in each of the chapter areas in Texas.

This year’s essay topics are “Czechs in America, Some Became Famous for their Contributions” for grades 10 to 12 and “Early Czech Traditions or Folklore” for grades seven to nine.

The contest is open from December 1, 2006, through February 15, 2007, with all essays due to the local chapter

by Feb. 15. Entries will initially be judged at the local chapter level.

Winning essays from each chapter will be forwarded to the state level, where first and second place winners will be picked in each division, and cash prizes will be awarded.
