Happy New Year! Please accept

my best wishes for 2007. This is a season when many of us reflect on the past, while we also plan for the future.

The year 2006 was certainly a big one in the insurance area. More than 4,000 applications were written by SPJST’s awesome team of sales agents. The insurance leaders are quick to give credit to the entire membership for this success. But, ultimately, credit goes to the sales agents, state field personnel, Insurance Department staff, and Vice President McBride. The leadership made it happen. Hats off to you all!

Enjoy this moment of history—the first time ever that many applications have been written in a single year in SPJST. Sales agents—the lion’s share of credit goes to you for you are what the success is all about.

And, members, lodges, and youth, thanks for your recruits and support.

That, too, attributes to the application count in a big way.

It’s a new year now. And, with that comes a new membership campaign—one that promises to be even more dynamic and more exciting than ever before. There are incentives for everyone who participates—members, lodges, districts, sales agents, youth clubs, youth leaders, and youth members. The theme is “Rhythm ’07 . . . SPJST —Music to the Ears” and will encompass a fun music theme. The new goal is 2,777 applications written. The complete campaign will be introduced in next week’s Vestnik. Lodge presidents and youth leaders are also receiving packets of information and new recruiter cards to share with members. Stay tuned for the excitement. Thanks for your support to make SPJST grow and become the grandest fraternal in the state of Texas!

Congratulations to Mortgage Loan Clerk Laurie Cook and husband Jeremy who are the proud parents of new daughter Jaycee Olivia, born December 19, 2006.

seven pounds, two ounces and was 20 inches long. She is the granddaughter of Andy and Cindy Lingar of Morgan’s Point and Sandy and Mike Goldstein of Pensacola, Florida.

Congratulations to State Youth Director John Hoelscher and wife Lisa who are the proud parents of new daughter Abigail Elizabeth Hoelscher, born November 27, 2006.

Abigail weighed nine pounds, 12 ounces.

Any time that you engage in a new partnership, you never really know how it will go. In this case, we were pleasantly surprised! by Temple Fire Department Public Information Officer Thomas Pechal of Lodge 47, Seaton. The Christmas stage show that followed was a first and a lot of fun. Thanks to Extraco Banks Senior Vice President Sam Farrow, also a member of Lodge 47, Seaton, who served as master of ceremonies and to all of the performers and behind the scenes people who donated their time and talent. A total of 12 acts participated in the program.

Other attractions included an ornament craft room, refreshments, and the door prizes awarded during and after the stage show. Congratulations to all of the winners!

Graduating high school seniors and college undergraduates who have been SPJST members for one or more years are encouraged to apply for an SPJST Scholarship.

Established in 1982, the SPJST Scholarship Program is funded by an allocation of the SPJST Supreme Lodge and through community contributions by SPJST members. Accordingly, the more funds available, the more scholarships awarded. In 2006, the SPJST awarded a total of 64 scholarships for $64,500 through its scholarship program.

State FAC: remember the form deadlines Dear Lodge FAC, Please share the following information at your January lodge meeting. Happy New Year to all. I hope that each of you had a merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year celebration. As we look back at 2006, it was a very good year for SPJST and many lodges. As Vice President Gene McBride stated in one of his recent talks, “On January 1, everything rolls back to zero, and we have to start the New Year all over.” This is great for everyone.

Those who achieved their goals should have new goals even greater than the past year and those who did not achieve their goals, this is the time of year to regroup, set new goals and attempt at achieving your goals.

As of the end of November reporting, 63 lodges have qualified to receive an incentive award. Give yourself a big round of applause for the great job you did in the past year.

SPJST State Tarok Tournament SPJST Lodge 6, Cottonwood, will host the 2007 State Tarok Tournament on February 3. The preregistration deadline is Friday, January 26.

The members of Cottonwood are working very hard to make this event successful and enjoyable for everyone. If you have played in our State Tarok tournament before, we will be sending you the tournament information and a registration form in the mail.

Bowl for the Cure on February 17 The third annual Bowl for the Cure to benefit breast cancer research will be held on February 17 in Austin, Texas. SPJST, Hermann Sons, Catholic Life, KJT, and KJZT will again sponsor this event. To compete, you must be at least 18 years of age, and a member in good standing.

Teams will consist of four players — any combination of men and women.

Walk-ins will be registered from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., and bowling begins promptly at 12 noon. Walk-ins will be charged an extra $5, so be sure to pre-register as soon as possible to lock in your spot. Deadline to pre-register is Friday, February 9.

The winning society will be determined by average pin fall over a three game series. There will be awards given to the top three male and female bowlers for high game and high series. We will also have some great door prizes on hand, so come out, join the fun, and help SPJST take the title, and bring home the traveling

trophy. If you do not have enough members to make up a team, that is okay. Simply contact Tammy or myself, and we will place you on a team. Even if you do not bowl, make plans to come out, have a good time, and cheer on our SPJST bowlers.

SPJST Awards Banquet February 24 is the date to honor our SPJST lodges, sales agents, and fraternalists. This is our way of showing our achievers how much we appreciate their hard work and dedication to SPJST. More details will be coming next month. Also, watch your Vestnik for additional details.

Join Hands Day As your lodge or youth club make plans for the coming year, we want to encourage all lodges to mark May 5 on your calendar and make plans to organize a local Join Hands Day service project. The idea is simple: Adults and youth working together and with other organizations to make good things happen in their communities. Join Hands Day is a national event sponsored by America’s Fraternal Benefit Societies in partnership with The Points of Light Foundation and the Volunteer Center National Network. It is a day when young people and adults connect as equal partners in planning an activity that fixes or improves a local problem and affirms the values of caring and working together. Again, this year, the Supreme Lodge will offer a $100 incentive to local SPJST lodges to be used in developing and/or promoting their project. This incentive will be for lodges who partner with their youth club. In lodges where there is no youth club, lodges are encouraged to join forces with other area lodges and/or community service organizations, civic, school and/or church groups. To receive the $100 incentive, lodges must register the event with the Office of the State Fraternal Activities Coordinator on or before April 6. In 2006, 28 SPJST lodges participated in Join Hands Day projects. The Supreme Lodge

Lodge 9, Snook gives to Little Dribblers Donnie Hejl called the meeting of Lodge 9, Snook to order. Randy Gaas led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance. There was a moment of silence held for Melissa Slenk Trevino.

Ann Schoeneman read the minutes of the November meeting. There was one correction made. David Kovar gave the hall manager’s report.

Donnie Victorick gave the treasurer’s report. Snook has made the second step in the incentive program. Lodge 9 accepted four new members.

There was a motion made to repair the barbecue pit. We are working on re-wiring the hall.

There was a motion made to let the Snook Brethren Church use the hall for its services since there had been a fire at the church, and there was a lot of smoke damage.

We made a donation to the Snook Little Dribblers.

Marie Shelfer gave the youth club report. They presented the Christmas program on Sunday evening. There were 50 youth and adults who attended the Gattitown District One Lockin. Each family was to bring $5 for a needy family. The youth sponsored a Christmas dance on December 16. A

group went and danced the beseda at the Dime Box Country Christmas.

Next Meeting—January 3 The next meeting will be Wednesday, January 3 at 7:30 p.m. and the youth club will meet at 6:30 p.m.

Dear Members, Lodge Karel Jonas will hold its first meeting of 2007 on the second Sunday of January, the 14th, at 1 p.m.

Brother Glenn Kaminsky. The fare was spiral-cut ham, green beans, made by Helen Kelner, broccoli, cheese and rice casserole and coleslaw, made by Jeanette Kaminsky. The ham was picked up, already cooked then heated up by Helen Kelner.

A special thanks goes to Jeanette Kaminsky and Glenn Kaminsky who came early to get the tables ready for the festivities. A big thanks go to Helen and Tony Kelner for getting things together and ready (many which are unseen). Yours truly brought the coffeemaker and coffee for the coffee drinkers.

Santa (aka Tony Kelner) arrived and wished everyone a merry Christmas along with handing out candy canes.

We welcomed a transfer member from Lodge 81 who is also associated with the Czech National Cemetery. They are Rudy Vrana and his wife, Helen. Everyone at the meeting was glad of their presence.

Something this writer failed to mention in his report about the November meeting was our youngest member Wyatt Ohl gave out United States flags to all present in commemoration of Veteran’s Day. To the faithful: Mark your calendars, make plans to attend, and this writer remains . . .

Lodge 8, Weimar Members Deliver Food to Local Pantry

Members collected approximately 262 pounds of food and items.

Lodge 30, Taiton members enjoy Christmas social Dear Vestnik Readers, Lodge 30, Taiton adults and youth met on December 10, 2006, to celebrate Christmas. Everyone began gathering at 11 a.m. for a chance to socialize with friends. After everyone enjoyed visiting with fellow members and guests, we sat down to enjoy a lunch of fried chicken, dressing, and other covered dishes and desserts

The regular monthly meeting of Lodge 30, Taiton was called to order at 1 p.m. by President Karen Kaspar.

We then recited the Pledge of Allegiance and observed a moment of silence for all sick and departed members of our lodge.

The roll of officers was called by Secretary Wanda Dorotik. After the roll call, Wanda read the minutes from the previous meeting, and they were approved as read.

The treasurer’s report was then given by Treasurer Lisa Bubela. She asked for and received a motion to pay all outstanding bills.

Youth Leader Lisa Bubela gave a report on the activities of the youth club. She told everyone that the youth helped to clean up our adopted roadside area after the November meeting.

She also gave information on the new location for summer camp at Stoney

Creek Ranch in Columbus. Everyone is excited because the location is so nearby. DYC Marcy Dorotik was on hand to show pictures of the location.

The youth also participated in the El Campo Christmas Parade where the SPJST Float not only received first place in the noncommercial division but also the Grand Marshall award as the overall winner. Karen Kaspar took this time to thank both Lisa and Marcy for everything that they do to assist our youth program.

A thank you note was then read by Yvonne Marcaurele from a family that the adult and youth lodges assisted at Thanksgiving.

A cemetery marker was then presented to the family of Cyril Mrnustik.

Accepting on behalf of his wife Emma was Jennie Mae Treumer, her sister.

FAC Wanda Dorotik then gave her report on the happenings around the state. She read a letter from State FAC Chester Jenke informing everyone about the Christmas Open House on December 17 at the Azalee Marshall Cultural Center.

State Field Representative Karen Kaspar then gave a report on the incentive standing of our lodge. She told everyone that the incentive for Lodge 30 was 30 issued applications, and we had 52 issued applications as of December 1.

Karen then introduced the Fraternalist of the Year for our lodge, Marjorie Treumer.

Karen wished everyone a merry Christmas on behalf of the SPJST Home Office and Director Michael Ahlstrom. She handed out date planners to all present from Director Ahlstrom who could not be at our celebration.

Door prizes of centerpieces made by the youth were then given out.

Lodge 51, Ellinger reports on December meeting SPJST Lodge 51, Ellinger held its meeting and Christmas party on December 8, 2006, at the Ellinger Fire Station at 6:30 p.m. We were so happy to welcome Brian Vanicek, SPJST Supreme Lodge President, to our meeting.

Lodge 51 President Calvin Hlinsky welcomed everyone and led the Pledge of Allegiance. This was followed by a moment of silence for those deceased and those in military service. Most recently deceased were Monica Supak and Edwin Hoelscher.

Jo Ann Divin presented her reports which were approved. A thank you note was read from Edith Rek. Mr. Vanicek gave an informative speech. He noted that SPJST has 120 lodges and 21 different products of insurance.

A state historical marker will be placed in Fayetteville at the site of the first SPJST Home Office. He also noted that many scholarships have been awarded throughout the years.

Mr. Vanicek thanked everyone for helping with the meetings and continuing the work of SPJST. Next was the election of officers.

Current officers were re-elected by acclamation. Lifetime Achiever awards and the 2007 picnic will be discussed at the next meeting scheduled for March, 2007.

All members present signed a

sympathy card for Glenora Hoelscher.

Calvin expressed his appreciation for the work of the membership and wished all a merry Christmas.

Door prizes were then presented, and the group enjoyed fellowship—a stew supper and desserts furnished by those in attendance.

Lodge 79 Corpus Christi to elect officers We held our December meeting with only a few members present. It was decided to postpone our election until the January, 2007, meeting. Our President Jerry Sijansky is in the hospital, and a number of our member are recuperating from various illnesses. Let’s all get well soon.

At our January meeting, we will be electing officers for 2007. So, start thinking who to elect.

We also want to honor five members with Lifetime Achievement awards given by the SPJST Home Office to members who have 10 years or more of membership and have given to improve SPJST Lodge 79 in any which way. So think of some of our old, no longer active members. These awards will be given at the District Seven Spring Meeting.

In closing, I want to say thanks to Melanie for all her patience in reading and trying to figure our my scribbling. My writing is getting so bad.

Lodge 81, Needville members enjoy Christmas lunch The SPJST Lodge 81, Needville meeting was held on Sunday, December 17, 2006. At 12 noon, President Vincent Newman gave a prayer of thanks. We had hams baked and donated by Emma Kujawa and Darlene Blinka. Thank you, ladies, for the delicious hams.

We also had a variety of vegetables

and desserts brought by the members. Thanks go to Darlene Blinka for cooking sausage to go along with our meal. I would also like to thank Darlene and her kitchen committee for getting everything set up for us.

President Vincent Newman called the business meeting to order at 1 p.m. Vincent Newman led the Pledge of Allegiance. All officers answered the roll call. Gilbert Walzel was added to our sick list. He had to have an unexpected appendectomy. We hope you continue getting well.

Winnifred Susan and Benita Walzel prepared the Christmas bags for our meeting. Each bag contained an apple, an orange, candy, and some nuts. Everyone really appreciated the Christmas bags. Thanks for taking the time to make them.

Under new business, the members voted in new member, Robert Phillip Margison. We’re looking forward to meeting you. Also, under new business, we would like to thank Dan Pavlas for playing his accordion while we ate. His son played the trumpet, and we had Mrs. Hurta singing Christmas carols. That truly was a special treat. Also, Bradley Stavinoha announced that the Legion hall in Needville was going to have a New Year’s Eve party at 6:30 p.m. and invited everyone to join in the fun.

Lodge 88, Houston reports on meetings December 10, 2006 Meeting The December meeting began at 10:10 a.m. President Patricia Bruce gave a brief invocation and led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. All officers were present except the second vice president who arrived later.

Secretary Marceil Malak read the names of three deceased members, and the membership paused for a moment of silence in memory of these members. Sister Clara Broz read the financial report for November.

First Vice President Helen Hegwood reminded us of the Choral Club’s trip to the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home in Needville on December 16 for its annual visit to entertain the residents and deliver the lodge’s contribution of $1,000 to the home. Sister Esther Heinsohn, FAC, reported on her trip to San Antonio to deliver gifts to hospitalized veterans on December 2.

Approximately $400 was collected, and gifts purchased such as phone cards and snacks were delivered. She thanked all who contributed and said the veterans and their families were very grateful. She reminded us that a final report of volunteer hours for 2006 needs to reach her by the January meeting so that her report could be filed timely.

The annual Christmas party, held on December 2, was a huge success according to Youth Leader Barbara Gonzales. Santa appeared and allowed the children to give him their wish list. Sister Gonzales said that at any of the youth parties, including Easter, Halloween, and Christmas, all members and guests are welcome.

Brother Johnny Broz reminded us to please continue donating newspapers, but they need to be in paper

bags, not plastic, as they cannot be delivered in plastic to the recycle center.

Entertainment Chairman Betty Theiss gave us details of the dances scheduled for Christmas and New Year’s Eve, encouraging more to attend these and future dances. Don’t miss out on all these fun events! She thanked the numerous members who put up the beautiful Christmas decorations following her persistent plea for help.

Brother Lynn Pflughaupt reporting for the Board of Trustees reported that the required security cost has been increased from $18 per hour to $20 per hour. Chairman of the Audit Committee Sherry Miller announced that the records for September and October were audited and moved they be approved. The motion was seconded and approved.

The Birthday Club’s annual turkey dinner will be December 13, according to Sister Lowrina Lindemann.

Sister Linda Wehring reminded us that the Blue Room party is scheduled for December 17 from 3 to 8 p.m. The Choral Club will rehearse on December 12 at 7 p.m. to prepare for the Needville trip on December 16.

Sister Hegwood read a resume of Sydney Jurchak’s numerous charitable activities: some for our lodge, some for his church, and various others. Remember that he was elected as our candidate for Fraternalist of the Year. Good luck, Sydney.

The list of new members and transfers was read and accepted. Our Guide, Josephine Pflughaupt, reported 53 members present. After she read the names of December birthday celebrants, we sang “Happy Birthday.”

Eleven door prizes were awarded.

Sister Mary Granberry, a new sales agent, was then given the opportunity to make a brief explanation of some of the complexities of the new Medicare drug program.

Annual Meeting Report The meeting was concluded at 11:15 a.m., at which time we proceeded with the Annual Meeting.

Following the usual Pledge of Allegiance and invocation, each officer was given the opportunity to speak, and all offered their wishes to all for a merry Christmas and happy New Year.

President Bruce commented that the Christmas decorations were beautiful and again thanked Betty Theiss, Entertainment Committee Chairman, who gathered willing workers to put them in place.

Sister Carol Havemann thanked all for the donations to the Scholarship Fund during the year and especially included the donations from the sale of aluminum cans which was largely handled by Johnny Broz. Scholarship

Sister Lowrina Lindemann thanked all for their help and donations of pastry throughout the year. Our Birthday Club Sisters always come through with such delicious pastries.

Brother Lynn Pflughaupt thanked the Bar Committee and others who helped and especially those who helped serve and sell food at the Gun Club meetings (a regular renter of our facility). Linda Wehring, Chairman of the Blue Room Committee, thanked her committee members Dorothy Pflughaupt, Lowrina Lindemann, and Lynn Pflughaupt District Five Director Larry W. Pflughaupt reported that he enjoyed cooking for the Gun Club meetings and thanked his assistants. He asked all members to support the sales agents. Helen Hegwood is our lodge’s top sales agent for November in number of applications. For District Five, Mary Granberry is tops in insurance and applications. More sales agents are needed. Our district recently lost two agents as a result of the death of Robert Kieschnick and John Anderson.

President Bruce opened the election for the 2007 officers. The following were nominated and elected by acclamation:

Remembering that we are still in need of a Financial Secretary/Treasurer.

Lynn Pflughaupt moved that the position be left vacant until a suitable candidate is found. This motion was approved. Sister Clara Broz, who has substituted in that position for the lodge, explained that the office of Financial Secretary/Treasurer needs to be given to a qualified person. Our by-laws call for the position to be filled by a member, and consideration may need to be given to eliminating that restriction.

Following a recess during which a luncheon of stew, salad, french bread, and a peach half was enjoyed, the meeting was reconvened at 1:07 p.m.

A short memorial service was conducted by First Vice President Helen Hegwood. The names of all of the deceased members during the year was read. A tribute and prayer was offered.

Lodge 81, Needville Members Celebrate Christmas

Chairman of the Rules and Regulations Committee Emil Kuropata presented a proposal to change Article II, Section (a) to change the time of our monthly meetings to begin at 6:30 p.m. rather than 7:30 p.m. The motion failed. A discussion of the wording in Article VII, Section (d) ensued. It was felt that the original intent of the Article was not clearly stated. It was decided to make a clarification and present it to the next meeting for approval.

Members brought donations of food items to the meeting to prepare a food basket for a needy family. A family was chosen—a single mother with two daughters—and Sister Helen and Brother King Hegwood agreed to deliver the basket.

Sister Sherry Miller presented the recommendations of the Remunerations Committee, providing for a limited expense reimbursement to officers for 2006 expenses, one workers party for 2007, a salary proposal for an office employee, and leaving the awards to the discretion of the Executive Committee. After discussion, the motion was amended to exclude all officers’ reimbursements, and to set no salary for an office employee until a qualified individual was located. The amended motion was approved.

Brother Pflughaupt, District Five Director, installed the newly-elected officers and board members. The meeting was adjourned at 2:30 p.m.

Santa Claus arrived from the North Pole with his sack of goodies and welcomed everyone with a hearty, “Merry Christmas!” All present, young and young-at-heart, were having a jolly time.

On December 13, the Birthday Club Sisters hosted their annual Christmas luncheon with turkey and dressing and all of the trimmings, plus those delicious homemade desserts.

Thanks go to President/Reporter Evelyn Zajicek and Bette Hurta for a very festive occasion. Mrs. Zajicek has been a very dedicated officer for the Club this year, and all sisters are to be commended for their service donated on behalf of the lodge during this past year.

Traveling down the road for the annual trek to Needville on December 16, the Concert Choir, under the direction of Helen Hegwood, is always fun and hopefully, a service to the residents at the S.P.J.S.T. Needville Rest Home. This reporter enjoys accompanying the choir—and even my talented husband, Reverend Henry Beseda, shared his vocalizing this year with the choir as well. Brother Fred Buri and Sister Helen Hegwood were the highlighted soloists in their rendition of “O Holy Night.” “Skoda Lasky” was again the most robustly sung song of the day, as all of the audience joined in the singing of this popular polka. Jerry Hurta contributed his talents on his accordion, also. The choir has been invited to perform for this occasion for the last 35 years. Thank you!

was the final appearance of the year for the float. The float participated in 14 Christmas parades and received 12 first place awards and one second place award.

Lodge 130, Dallas Annual Camp-out

Friday, October 27 to Sunday, October 29, 2006 • Cleburne State Park About 30 members gathered on October 27 to 29, 2006, for the Lodge 130, Dallas camp-out at Cleburne State Parks.

Martha Vrla was recognized for all of her hard work in supplying the food and getting things ready such as kitchen supplies, etc. for the campout. Thanks also to Teresa Boylan for

bringing games and pumpkins to carve for the children. The adults also had a good time with the games.

During the weekend camp-out, the lodge also held a meeting to discuss some very important topics on the future of our lodge as we are looking for ideas from the membership on remaining an active lodge. We voted

to have lodge meetings on Sunday afternoons, possibly at different members’ homes or at social outings to increase lodge attendance. Also, we hope for the possibility of more youth involvement so a youth club can be started.

We also encouraged members to recruit new members as this is the

future of our lodge. Hopefully, in the new year of 2007, our lodge will have a bright future. We encourage the membership and especially the youth to get involved in the lodge as this is our future.

Lodge 91, Crosby elects 2007 officers

Lodge 91, Crosby held its fourth quarterly meeting combined with a luncheon at China-Ko located in Crosby on December 2, 2006.

Approximately 35 members were present.

The meeting was called to order by President Sebesta. The minutes and treasurer’s report were read and approved. A moment of silence was held for departed members.

There was no unfinished business.

The election of officers was held.

William Locke was nominated and voted in as the 2007 president. All other officers were voted in by acclamation. The 2007 officers for Lodge 91, Crosby are:

Motion was made and a vote was taken that Lodge 91 continue with the scholarship.

We also discussed whether or not Lodge 91 will be merging with Lodge 65 of Baytown. President Sebesta informed members present that Lodge 91’s offer still stands, but there has not been any response from Baytown.

The meeting adjourned at 12 noon, and everyone enjoyed a delicious dinner. The time and place of the next meeting will be posted in the Vestnik.

Lodge 202, Jourdanton met Sunday, December 10, 2006, at the Jourdanton Community Center with 41 members and guests present.

President Jeff Barta presided. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited.

Silence was observed for deceased member Melvin Dusek. President Barta gave the table prayer. A feast of fried chicken, ham, and luscious side dishes were served.

A note of appreciation was received from the Chain family for the donation to the scholarship fund in memory of Gregory. FAC Mary Ann Barta encouraged members to participate in the bowling tournament.

Lodge 157, Lubbock Banquet

Sunday, November 12, 2006 • St. Elizabeth’s Parish in Lubbock, Texas Lodge 157, Lubbock held its first banquet on November 12, 2006, at St. Elizabeth’s Parish in Lubbock, Texas.

Lodge 157 members celebrated Czech history and the history of Lodge 157,

elected 2007 officers, and enjoyed a fine steak dinner prepared by the Knights of Columbus.

Lodge 157 was chartered in 1933 in Lubbock, Texas, by early certificate

holders. Angeline Shockley and Anna Kubacak with membership of more than 60 years each were present and shared some stories of early times. We had premium logs dated back to the

1930s, and all the awards the lodge had achieved on display.

A good time was had by all.

Fort Worth Ladies Circle Our December meeting was great.

Gloria opened it at 10:30 a.m. as usual with the Pledge of Allegiance. She handed out gifts of honey to all present. The meeting was short because there was a lot of fun to be had.

The chairman of the nominating committee presented a slate of officers for election. Since there were no nominations from the floor, the slate was elected unanimously. We had 53 members and guests at our meeting. Sorry I failed to get the guests’ names, but please come again.

Gloria asked that members bring personal items to our January meeting to be taken to the Women’s Shelter.

Some suggestions would be soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, lotions, shampoos, etc.

Gloria welcomed back Mona Lee Hattendorf and Kitty Rippen.

The meeting was adjourned.

There were a lot of crafts available for sale. We had the Mr. and Mrs. Wright game, which was a lot of fun.

A few people had as many as three gifts on their laps at times. The lodge trustees handed out bags of goodies to all present. Thank you! We then had a delicious lunch. Hostesses were Mary Ann Kozel, Norma McLendon, and Evelyn Scaff with help from several other members. After lunch, we played bingo which was also a lot of fun.

Dues will be collected next month, and remember to bring your “sample” items to our January 9 meeting.

SPJST Deer Antler Contest Contest Dates: November 1, 2006, through January 31, 2007.

This contest is for SPJST members, and only Texas white-tailed deer entries are eligible. There will be two categories for entries: free range deer and high-fenced deer. By definition, a high-fenced deer is one that has been raised primarily in an enclosure. An enclosure can be described as, but not limited to, an 8-foot (or higher) fence and can come in a variety of acreage sizes.

Each category will have two $50 winners – one for widest spread (measured outside to outside at the widest point) and one for most points (point must be at least one inch to be legal).

In Memory of Johnny J. Laznovsky, Sr.

Mr. Johnny J. Laznovsky, Sr., 56, died Saturday, November 25, 2006, at the Ennis Regional Medical Center. He was born January 17, 1950, in Ennis, the son of Edwin and Bessie Zhanel Laznovsky. He was reared in Ennis, graduating from St. John High School. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He was a machinist at Riley Industrial. He was a member of St. John Catholic Church, KJT, SPJST Lodge 135, Ennis, and Sokol.

He is survived by sons Johnny and wife Christy Laznovsky, Jr. of Ennis, Joseph A. Laznovsky of Ennis, Joshua Edwin and Christa Laznovsky of Mississippi; daughters Wendy Sue and husband Mike Allen of Oklahoma and Patricia Jade Laznovsky of Corsicana; mother, Bessie E. Laznovsky of Ennis; sisters and their husbands Linda and Jero Fuller and Margie and Stuart Hamilton, all of Ennis; nine grandchildren; two nieces; and two nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Edwin Laznovsky.

Rosary was recited at 7 p.m.

Monday, November 27 in the Keever Chapel. Mass of the Christian Burial was celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, November 28 with Reverend Edison Vela as celebrant. Interment followed in St. Joseph’s Cemetery under the direction of J.E. Keever Mortuary. Serving as pallbearers were Jeremy Baw, Joe Cihak, Mark Zhanel, Brad Evans, James Tay, and Justin Slovak.

Expression of Sympathy The officers and membership of Lodge 202, Jourdanton wish to express heartfelt sympathy to the family of MELVIN LOUIS DUSEK of Tilden, Texas, who passed away November 28, 2006, at the age of 83.

Melvin was born August 19, 1923, in Rogers to Pauline (Kachtik) and Henry Dusek and made his living as a rancher.

He is survived by his wife Jewel Faye (Koonce) Dusek of Tilden; daughter Melva Gimbel and husband Jim of Cloudcroft, New Mexico; son James Dusek and wife Kimberly of San Antonio; sister Lillian Ray and husband Clovis of Calliham; grandchildren Troy Dusek and wife Johnna, Brian Dusek and wife Lindsay, Marty Dusek and Felisha Gimbel; and greatgrandchildren Lane Crowell and Dylan Dusek.

Serving as pallbearers were Jeff Atkinson, Glenn Atkinson, C.W. Wood, Joe Verastegui, III, Julio Garcia, Brandon Seidel, Jason Smith, and Steve Stapp.

Visitation was held Thursday, November 30 from 9 to 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Tilden.

Services were then performed at 11 a.m. with interment following at Hilltop Cemetery in Tilden.

Arrangements were under the direction of Hurley Funeral Home of Pleasanton.

In Memory of Edwin Hoelscher Funeral services for Edwin C. Hoelscher, 89, of Ellinger were held at 10:30 a.m.

T u e s d a y , December 5, 2006, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ellinger with Monsignor Ben Mazurkiewicz o f f i c i a t i n g . Edwin Hoelscher Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Mr. Hoelscher died Saturday morning, December 2 at St. Mark’s Medical Center in La Grange.

A parish and Knights of Columbus rosary was recited at 7 p.m. Monday, December 4 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ellinger.

Mr. Hoelscher was born December 4, 1916, near Columbus, the son of Henry and Sophie (Gully) Hoelscher.

He married Glenora L. Koehl on December 27, 1941, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ellinger. He served during World War II in the United States Air Force from 1942 until 1945 in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre. He owned and operated Hoelscher’s Texaco Service Station in Ellinger for more than 55 years until his retirement in April, 2001.

He was a member, past council member, and past grand marshal of the church feast parade at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ellinger and a 60year member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a 70-year member of the Sons of Herman Lodge and SPJST Lodge 51, Ellinger. He was a member of the American Legion in La Grange and was a past president and longtime member of the Ellinger Chamber of Commerce and had served on the Ellinger Water Board.

He received a Humanitarian Award in 1990.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, James L. Hoelscher; and four brothers, Walter, Clemence, Willie, and Albert Hoelscher.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years; son Gary Hoelscher and wife Janice of Ellinger; daughters-in-law, Barbara Cook and husband John of LaPorte; Nancy Cernoch and husband David of Ellinger; six grandchildren, Lisa Hoelscher of Austin, Kevin Hoelscher and wife Deanna of Ellinger, Darren Hoelscher of Houston, T.C. Muniz and husband Andre of La Grange, Dino Hoelscher and wife Traci of Beaumont, and Becky Stewart and husband Casey of Ellinger; great-grandchildren, Brooke and Brady Hoelscher and Alyssa, Abbigail and Coby Stewart; sister Nora Schoebel and husband Lester of Columbus; brother Henry Hoelscher and wife Esther of Houston; and sisters-in-law Mary Hoelscher of Ellinger, Lou Anna Hoelscher, and Gladys Hoelscher both of Columbus.

Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association; Brazos Valley Hospice in Brenham; or any favorite charity.

Expression of Sympathy We, the members of the Resolution Committee of Lodge Hvezda Texasu No. 47, Seaton, Texas, on behalf of our membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed sister, BONNIE VACHA. Services for Bonnie Sue Vacha, 62, of Temple were held at 2 p.m.

Friday, December 15 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Temple with the Reverend Ranjan Cletus officiating.

Burial was in the Seaton Cemetery.

A rosary was recited Thursday, December 14 at 7 p.m. at HarperTalasek Funeral Home in Temple.

Mrs. Vacha died Tuesday, December 12 in a local hospital. She was born in Bell County to Jesse and Roszell (Qualls) Cooksey. After graduating from Temple High School, she pursued her LVN education in Galveston, She returned to Temple to work at area hospitals, retiring after 30 years of service. She married Adolph Vacha on September 4, 1965, in Temple. She belonged to the Temple BTO Does No. 139; SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton, the Altar Society, and Catholic Daughters Association. She worked in St. Mary’s Gift Shop.

Survivors are her husband of Temple; son Gary Vacha of Austin; daughter Emily of Snook; sister Beatrice Ivey Wooley of Morgan’s Point; and two granddaughters.

Memorials may be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

Visitation was 6 to 8 p.m.

State Youth Director looks forward to 2007 activities

Dear Youth Leaders, The final weeks of 2006 were filled with Christmas cheer. First, thanks to all of you who called or sent messages to Lisa and me on the birth of our third child, Abigail Elizabeth Hoelscher.

Abigail was born November 27 and is truly a blessing.

After attending several lodge parties and holiday events, it’s easy to see how much we all have in common.

Everyone wants to make things better for their families, their lodges, and their communities. Fraternalism is the friendly spirit that brings all of these good things together. Sometimes that chemistry is so strong that I can actually feel it when I walk into a room.

When that happens, it’s great and it’s exciting!

This year’s Temple Christmas parade and SPJST Open House were both wonderful successes. The SPJST Float won first place in the parade.

Members of the SPJST State Royalty Court and District Two youth rode on the float. Afterwards, they gathered for cookies and hot chocolate with the lighted float at the Home Office.

Because of the construction going on at the SPJST Home Office, this year’s Christmas Open House was held from 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, December 17 at the Cultural Activities Center. The CAC is a great place to have a party. Santa and Mrs. Claus got things rolling when they arrived by fire truck. This year’s special attraction was a stage show that featured lots of local individual and group talent — kind of like a YAD talent show with adult participation!

Other special attractions were the ornament construction area, holiday refreshments, and the presentation of the many door prizes provided by area businesses. Thanks to everyone who turned out to enjoy these two events.

Call (800) 727-7578 Mark Your Calendar: May 5 is Join Hands Day The SPJST is making a big push for at least 50 adult lodges and youth clubs to get involved in Join Hands Day in 2007. A total of 28 adult lodges and youth clubs participated in 2006. This year, Join Hands Day falls on Saturday, May 5. The idea behind Join Hands Day is to get kids, adults and outside groups working together on a project that can make a positive difference in the community.

What can your lodge do? Some of the great projects from last year included cemetery clean-ups, highway beautification, assisting veterans and senior citizens programs, and conducting a variety of fix-up and refurbishing projects. You’ve still got plenty of time to decide what you want to do. The main thing — at this point — is committing to do something. When coming up with ideas for your project, try to do something that will be noticed by the public. If you have any questions on this, please contact me.

As an added incentive to make your Join Hands Day project a success, the SPJST Home Office is once again offering a $100 incentive for the lodges that participate in the program.

The money is to be used in conjunction with your lodge effort. Join Hands Day participation forms are available from the Home Office.

Action ‘06 Membership Drive The SPJST had another good year recruiting new members. A list of youth who have recently joined SPJST and are eligible to be new youth members in your lodge has already been sent to you. Please review your list and get back with Peggy Sue to let her know who your new youth club members are. This information lets us know how much incentive award your youth club will be receiving. The incentive awards will be presented at the SPJST Awards Banquet to be held at the Killeen Convention Center on Saturday, February 24.

Youth Club Photos Needed for Awards Banquet Youth leaders, please take notice and mail or email a photograph of your youth club on or before January 26 for the presentation that will be made at the SPJST Awards Banquet on February 24. It can be a fun photo, action photo, or group shot. The main thing is that we want to be able to have your lodge pictured. Group photos are preferred. The photo will be displayed on screen when your youth club receives its incentive award. LIT Retreat The 2007 LIT Retreat will be held on June 1 to 3 at YMCA Hamman Ranch in Bandera, Texas. For 2008, it has already been decided that LIT Retreat will be held at Camp Hope, which was formerly Camp Val Verde, located midway between McGregor and Waco. 2007 Youth Program Theme: “SPJST - Rockin’ ‘07” Our 2006-2007 youth program theme is “SPJST - Rockin’ ‘07.” This theme, which will carry us through the summer camping sessions and State YAD, ties in nicely with the SPJST’s 2007 Membership Drive entitled “Rhythm ’07.”

2006 SPJST Camp Tee-Shirt Design Contest For those of you who are participating in the camp tee-shirt design contest, remember the deadline is January 31. This year’s grand prize will be a shopping spree at Wal-Mart and your design on the 2007 camp tee-shirt.

Youth leaders, please encourage all your youth members to participate. All participants will receive 20 merit points and a participation certificate.

Youth Leaders Workshop The youth leaders retreat is tentatively scheduled for March 24 and 25 at the Czech Inn located in West, Texas. I encourage everyone to attend. We will be presenting some great information on the SPJST Youth Program and are planning some great social activities. Plans are for the program to start on that Saturday at 10 a.m. and conclude Sunday morning

around 10 a.m. Call with any questions that you might have.

Lodge 6 Cottonwood youth reports on December meeting Dear Readers, We held our meeting on the first Sunday in December. Everyone gave their reports which were all in order.

We want to welcome our new members, Reagan Moore and the four Jackson members.

During the afternoon, we made Christmas bags for the rest home.

We want to thank the cooks for the wonderful and good turkey supper we were served.

After supper, we put on the Christmas program. After a visit with Santa, we all exchanged gifts. I hope everyone had a merry Christmas and happy and healthy New Year.

VĚSTNÍK house. I opened the door to the front room and to my surprise, Santa himself stepped out from behind the Christmas tree.

He placed his finger over his mouth so I would not cry out. “What are you doing?” I started to ask. The words choked up in my throat, and I saw he had tears in his eyes. His usual jolly manner was gone. Gone was the eager, boisterous soul we all know.

He then answered me with a simple statement.

“Teach the children!”

I was puzzled; what did he mean?

He anticipated my question, and with one quick movement brought forth a miniature toy bag from behind the

tree. As I stood bewildered, Santa said, “Teach the Children! Teach them the old meaning of Christmas. The meaning that now-a-days Christmas has forgotten.”

Santa then reached in his bag and pulled out a fir tree and placed it before the mantle. “Teach the children that the pure green color of stately fir tree remains green all year round, depicting the everlasting hope of mankind, all the needles point heavenward, making it a symbol of man’s thoughts turning toward heaven."

He again reached into his bag and pulled out a brilliant star. “Teach the child that the star was the heavenly sign of promises long ago. God promised a Savior for the world, and a star was the sign of fulfillment of His

promise.”

He then reached into his bag and pulled out a candle. “Teach the children that the candle symbolizes that Christ is the light of the world, and when we see this great light we are reminded of He who displaces the darkness.”

Once again, he reached into his bag and removed a wreath and placed it on the tree. “Teach the children that the wreath symbolizes the real nature of love. Real love never ceases. Love is one continuous round of affection.”

He then pulled from his bag an ornament of himself. “Teach the children that I, Santa Claus, symbolize the generosity and good will we feel during the month of December.”

He then brought out a holly leaf.

“Teach the children that the holly plant represents immortality. It represents the crown of thorns worn by our Savior. The red holly represents the blood shed by Him.” Next, he pulled from his bag a gift and said, “Teach the children that God so loved the world that He gave His begotten Son . . .” Thanks be to God for his unspeakable gift.

“Teach the children that the wise men bowed before the Holy Babe and presented Him with gold, frankincense, and myrrh. We should always give gifts in the same spirit of the wise men.”

Santa then reached in his bag and pulled out a candy cane and hung it on the tree. “Teach the children that the candy cane represents the shepherds’

New Year’s Resolutions

The New Year is traditionally a time for people to make resolutions. Resolutions are statements or vows that people make to improve their lives. The best thing about resolutions is that they know no age limits. You’re never too old — or too young — to make a New Year’s resolution. The American Academy of Pediatrics has collected New Year’s resolutions from boys and girls of all ages. Here are a few: Resolutions for Preschoolers • I will clean up my toys.

• I will brush my teeth twice a day, and wash my hands after going to the bathroom and before eating.

• I won’t tease dogs - even friendly ones. I will avoid being bitten by keeping my fingers and face away from their mouths.

Resolutions for, 5- to 12-Years-Old • I will drink milk and water, and limit soda and fruit drinks.

• I will apply sunscreen before I go outdoors. I will try to stay in the shade whenever possible and wear a hat and sunglasses, especially when I’m playing sports.

• I will try to find a sport (like basketball or soccer) or an activity (like playing tag, jumping rope, dancing, or riding my bike) that I like and do it at least three times a week!

• I will always wear a helmet when bicycling.

• I will wear my seat belt every time I get in a car. I’ll sit in the back seat and use a booster seat until I am tall enough to use a lap/shoulder seat belt.

• I’ll be nice to other kids. I’ll be friendly to kids who need friends - like someone who is shy, or is new to my school.

• I’ll never give out personal information such as my name,

home address, school name or telephone number on the Internet. Also, I’ll never send a picture of myself to someone I chat with on the computer without my parent’s permission.

Resolutions for 13-years-old and Up • I will eat at least one fruit and one vegetable every day, and I will limit the amount of soda I drink.

• I will take care of my body through physical activity and nutrition.

• I will choose non-violent television shows and video games, and I will spend only one to two hours each day — at the most — on these activities.

Lodge 24, Cyclone Youth Club gives to Toys for Tots Dear Readers, On December 3, 2006, the Lodge 24, Cyclone Youth Club had its annual Christmas party and meeting at Action World Bowling Alley in Temple. Everybody brought toys to be donated to Toys for Tots. Thanks to Shawn Ashcraft for delivering the toys for us.

The bowling party included drinks and cake. We had 24 youth bowling, and lots of parents in attendance. We also had two new members attend, Ty Stock and Shelby Bruggman.

Welcome! Everyone had a great time bowling and visiting.

Dear Readers, What a year it has been! Since YAD, State King Ryan Edwards and myself have been extremely busy. We have traveled to so many different places, I can’t even begin to count them. First, we went to Westfest. It was a very hot day, and we had to be there very early to make our appearance in our first parade.

Madeline and Zachary had lots of fun riding in the same car together and throwing out candy to children as we passed.

After the parade, we were introduced in the pavilion where they were showing off traditional Czech costumes. It brought back many memories since my family and I traveled to Czech Republic two summers ago. (Of course, people weren’t just walking around in traditional Czech outfits then.) Westfest was a great way to start off our year as State Royalty.

Next up was the Kolache Festival, and boy was that one to remember! You have to know me to know this, but I love, love, love kolaches! And, seeing all those kolaches together in one place was simply greatness. There was a kolache eating contest to which Ryan and I recruited many participants including my dad and Ryan’s mom Tammy. Although neither of them won, we all had a lot of fun cheering them on.

Our next appearance was the State Fair of Texas. When we first arrived, Ryan and Zachary danced the beseda, and we were then introduced. Orel the eagle was there, and my little sister Erica just loved him!

I think the next event was the one I was most excited for—the Texas Fraternal Congress meeting in San Antonio (Go, Spurs, go!).

San Antonio is one of my favorite cities. And, since my dad grew up there, we visit all the time. Madeline couldn’t make it however because she was camping with my dad and younger sister, so it was just me and my mom for the whole weekend. The day was a great success. Ryan and I made speeches that *cough cough* we just made finishing touches to that morning because you know we have just been working on those for weeks! There were many other youth there who performed as well, and the Ennis Czech Boys ended the day with some great polka music.

The District Three Fall Meeting was next in line where we discussed important issues, had great food, and even danced “The Bunny Hop.” It was a lot of fun.

Then, Madeline and I participated in the Ennis Christmas parade.

We rode in a super nice red Porsche, and former State Duke and State Duchess Michael and Amanda Jurik carried the banner in front of us. It was a wonderful evening, and a little girl even thought I was Miss America!

Our most recent appearance was the Temple Christmas parade where it was extremely cold. We rode on the first place SPJST Float which was very nicely decorated. Although our hands were frozen from waving them in the air, it was a lot of fun, and I loved seeing all the little kids’ excited faces as we passed.

I look forward to the next several months as SPJST State Queen, and I wish everyone a prosperous new year!

Dear Holiday Readers, I have been busy lately. I have been practicing for the Sokol exhibition (gymnastics) and also my Christmas dance recital. I am going to be in the children’s Christmas pageant and mass on Christmas Eve. My mom, dad, sister Misty, and I had a cookout in the pasture close to a huge pecan tree. We ate wienies, roasted marshmallows, and baby shrimp.

On Christmas break, we are going to have another cookout and go camping! I can’t wait because it will be my first time camping.

Dear Readers, Lodge 39, Bryan was very busy this month. I wrote last month informing you of several of our activities. We were in the Bryan parade with the SPJST Float. We went to the nursing home then to Mr. Gatti’s. We did that and had a great time.

Lodge 30, Taiton youth enjoy Christmas activities Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Club Dear Vestnik Readers, presents program On December 10, 2006, Lodge 30, Taiton held its annual Christmas social. We began with our meeting.

Ryan Drapela led the Pledge of Allegiance. Our special guest speaker was District Six Youth Counselor Marcy Dorotik. She had pictures to share with us showing the new location for camp in 2007. The pictures got all of us excited to go to camp this year. We look forward to doing something new. She also encouraged everyone to submit their designs for the camp tee-shirt contest. Don’t forget—they are due by January 31.

Lodge 183 Arlington youth participate in Christmas party Dear Vestnik Readers: December 9, 2006, was the SPJST Lodge 183, Christmas party. There were 13 youth members and several guests who attended. The dinner was provided by the lodge, which consisted of ham, green beans, corn, potatoes, salad, tea, and desserts.

After dinner, a presentation was given by Lodge 183 President Ann Pustejovsky, and a check was donated to Mission Arlington and The Rainbow Room as our way of giving back to the community.

After the installation of the 2007 officers by District Three Director Johnnie Krizan, he told us about events coming up for 2007 and the progress of the lodge standing with new members for 2006. The youth then sang “Jingle Bells,” while waiting for Santa to arrive. What an inspiration to see the smiling faces when Santa arrived! He presented the children with gifts and goodie bags.

After Santa left, the adults had a Christmas gift exchange while the children played with their gifts. The rest of the evening was spent socializing with our members.

Lodge 239, Hondo youth rides pony atop float Dear SPJST Members, My name is Kadejha Rodriguez. I am a new member to Lodge 239, Hondo Youth Club. In October, I helped collect food and blankets to donate to the food pantry. It made me feel good to help others.

On November 15, I did my Vestnik project at the youth club meeting. On November 18, our youth club was in the Hondo Christmas parade. This is my first time in the parade. It was so much fun on the horse atop the SPJST Float. We won first place. I saw my friends looking at me on the float. I said, “Hi” to everyone. It was really, really fun on the float. I really liked when I rode the pony. The SPJST Float was the best!

On December 15, we are going to have the best Christmas party ever! I can’t wait until our next meeting.

Lodge 239, Hondo Youth Club excited about first place float Dear Vestnik Readers, We held our youth and adult meetings for SPJST Lodge 239, Hondo on Wednesday, November 15, 2006.

The meeting was called to order at 6 p.m. by President Xavier as he led the Pledge of Allegiance. The roll of officers and members was called by Secretary Celinda Palomo. District Seven Director Bob Bayer was introduced as a guest at our meeting.

We also sang “Happy Birthday” to youth member Lakiesha R. Botello, who turned 13 on our November 15 meeting day.

We discussed the Saturday,

November 18 Christmas in God’s Country parade in Hondo to see who all would ride on the SPJST Float.

Saturday night, November 18 was very exciting, and it was our first time to represent SPJST with a float in one of Hondo’s parades. Special thanks to Vestnik Editor Melanie Zavodny and her husband, David Nauert, for bringing the float. It was so beautiful. Surprise, Vestnik readers! We won first place with the SPJST Float. We received a beautiful plaque that we were showing off all through the parade.

Afterwards, our youth leader Bridget Rodriguez treated us out to Pepe Pizza. We had a blast at the parade. There were six adults and 11 youth members riding the SPJST Float.

SPJST Lodge 239’s Christmas party was held at the community center at 6 p.m. on December 15.

The adult lodge also elected officers at this meeting. Special thanks to my mom, Marcelyn Botello for accepting her nomination as the vice president of SPJST Lodge 239 for 2007.

Lodge 239, Hondo youth: first time on SPJST Float Hi! My name is SeChelle Deleon, and we had a parade in Hondo on November 18. It was really fun being on the SPJST Float. Melanie and David did a real good job on the float.

We got first place for the best float in the parade.

We had fun on the float. I liked the polar bear and penguins. Those were funny. That was my first time on the float. Now, I know what it’s like to be on the float.

Lodge 246 Morgan’s Point Youth Club expresses thanks Dear Members, I would like to personally thank all the members of SPJST for their great support during the past 12 months.

Lodge 246, Morgan’s Point Youth Club did an excellent job in 2006. We finished off the year participating in

the Lack’s “Trim-a-Tree” event.

More than 400 non-perishable items were donated for this great cause.

Lodge 246 Youth Club won second place, and the items were donated to a local food bank.

Lodge 185, New Braunfels Youth Member Trey Stolte Achieves Cross Country Goal Trey Stolte of Lodge 185, New Braunfels has been running cross country at Geronimo Navarro High School since his freshman year.

He has placed individually and as a team member in District 29A the past four years; he placed fourth in district in 2003 which qualified him to participate in the regional meet. His team placed second in district in 2004, and it also participated in the regional meet. In 2005, his team placed first in district and sixth in the regional meet with his individual placing of 25th.

In 2006, Trey achieved his personal goal of going to the state meet his senior year. He placed seventh in district individually, and his team placed first for the second year in a row. He then placed 21st individually in the regional meet, and his team placed third. The top three teams and top 10 runners from each region are the final participants in the state meet. He culminated his high school cross country career at state by placing

45th individually, and his team placed sixth.

Trey has been accepted to Texas Tech University for the fall semester 2007 and plans to major in Finance and Real Estate.

Congratulations to Trey, and best wishes in his future!

Taylor Czech Chorus Performs for Rockdale Group

The Taylor Czech Chorus entertained more than 300 Rockdale Alcoa Retirees at the Rockdale Knights of Columbus hall for their Christmas

Slovak Texas.

The purpose of the queen is to encourage youth involvement and represent the Czech Heritage Society of Texas at various events within the state or as directed, and at the National Miss Czech-Slovak USA Pageant in August held in Wilber, Nebraska.

This year’s Miss Czech-Slovak Texas will be selected at the spring state meeting of the Czech Heritage Society in Caldwell, Texas, on Saturday, April 21, 2007. The deadline for Chapter queens to enter the state competition is March 15, 2007.

Chapter deadlines will be earlier.

The contestants must be between 16 and 26 years of age prior to September 1, 2007. She must be attending high school, junior college, technical school, college, university, or be a high school graduate. She must be a citizen of the United States.

Czech Heritage Society offers scholarship The Czech Heritage Society of Texas is accepting applications for the Victor Peter Memorial Scholarship.

The $500 stipend was established in memory of the late Victor Alfons Peter, who died in 1996. Peter was a retired businessman and a trustee of the Czech Heritage Society.

Following the Velvet Revolution in Czechoslovakia in 1989, he was instrumental in reestablishing relationships between the Czechs of Texas and the Old Country.

The Victor Peter Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a graduating high school senior to help further his or her education. As part of their application, students will write a 300-word essay about a prominent personality in Czech or Texas-Czech history. In addition, a high school
