odge 88, Houston member Joe Novak of Virginia Beach, Virginia, visited the SPJST Home Office in September. Readers may recall from a story that appeared in the April 20, 2005, Vestnik that Brother Joe has been fighting a battle to keep his home of 52 years.

Brother Novak fought many battles in his lifetime. He’s been in three wars—World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. But when Novak retired after 31 years as an Army mechanic, he figured he had fought in his last war. He planned to live out his retirement in his 70-year-old bungalow, located in the Old Beach section of Virginia Beach.

However, the Virginia Beach School Board laid out another battle plan for the longtime SPJST member. After years of debate, the convergence of three school issues came together to create the perfect storm of controversy—the decision to shut down Kemps Landing Magnet School for gifted children, combining it with Virginia Beach Middle School then building a

1,500-student, $54.6 million school, enveloping five houses and nine lots within the school’s new footprint.

Since that plan, residents of the affected neighborhoods voiced considerable opposition, and the school board explored other alternatives.

The 88-year-old Joe stated in the 2005 Vestnik article, “I’m pretty mad they can take my property. I have 14 more years to live until 100, and I want to live the rest of my life in my house.”

Recently, an excited Joe called in and said the battle is over. “They are not going to take my house, and they are not going to buy it.” He also wishes to express his appreciation to everyone who has kept him in his or her thoughts. “Thanks for the support,” he says.

It’s been a long road for Brother Joe. But, ultimately, his strong determination, great spirit, and upbeat attitude propelled him through this challenging situation.

SPJST records 3,090 applications written in Action ’06 campaign Through the end of September, the SPJST had received 3,090 applications for insurance certificates. The goal of the Action ’06 membership drive of 2,625 has been met; however, the campaign continues through December.

In conjunction with SPJST’s Action ’06 program, local lodges have been assigned application goals for the year.

The lodge goal has been based largely on past performance and perceived potential.

The last column, “Youth Club Application Count,” applies to those lodges with youth clubs and reflects applications written for members between the ages of 0 and 17 through June. “Youth Club” totals are applied toward the lodge’s total goal. The fourth column, “Lodge Incentive Count,” reflects the number of new certificates issued for the Lodge Recognition and Incentive Program.

District News Unapproved Minutes of the District Three Spring Meeting Lodge 154, Fort Worth April 24, 2006 Sister Mary Steinman, District Three President, called the meeting to order. Everyone was asked to stand for the posting of colors. Tommy Weeks led the Pledge of Allegiance, and Lakn Dieterich led SPJST Youth Motto.

Brother Jerry Milan, Lodge 154 President, welcomed everyone on behalf of the lodge. Sister Kay Weeks, District First Vice President, gave the response to the welcome.

Brother Brian Vanicek, Supreme Lodge President, gave the Action ’06 presentation. He extended greetings and thanks to everyone. SPJST has remained strong with 115 lodges located throughout Texas. We continue to keep strong family and cultural ties with our lodge support, community service, and charitable projects.

SPJST scholarships were awarded in the spring. The amount of money available for scholarships is based on

three sources: (1) money collected through the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive and memorials; (2) endowed scholarships; and (3) an annual allocation of the Supreme Lodge. In 2006, we awarded 55 $1,000 scholarships. The additional monies are funds that were awarded in the past and have gone unclaimed.

Some of these scholarships were awarded to our District Three youth members: Lodge 183 – Nick Culliton Lodge 6 – Christi Sparkman Lodge 25 – Rachel Hunter Lodge 6 – Brittany Angelo Lodge 66 – Douglas Galler Lodge 66 – Leanne Dujka Lodge 154 – Appa Hargiss Lodge 66 – Dustin Matula Lodge 66 – Jacoby Woods Lodge 25 – John McCallum Lodge 54 - Karen Debbendener Some of the lodges participating in the national Join Hands Day event are Ennis, Dallas, Arlington, and Cottonwood. Each received $100 from the SPJST Home Office.

announced that the SPJST Home Office in Temple will be expanding its building. This expansion will be detailed in the Vestnik. Brother Johnnie expressed sympathy to the family of Jeanie Mason of Lodge 154, and to the family of Justine Pokladnik of Lodge 84. Brother Johnnie Krizan introduced Phil McBee, District Three State Field Representative.

President Mary Steinman called the youth members to the front. Second Vice President Kay Lynn Kovar read the names of the departed members and their service. The youth presented a flower in memory of each member. Sister Bessie Petr thanked Sister Diana Engelke for coordinating the program.

The youth were dismissed to conduct the youth district meeting in another area.

Sister Pam Durham, District Three Treasurer, gave the treasurer’s report.

Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek presented a $3,500 check to District Three to conduct business in 2006.

President May Steinman called for reports for State Finance Committee – Michael Galler: no meeting; State By-Laws Committee – Al Kercho: no meeting until 2008; and district audit report – everything in good order.

Motion by Brother Gordon Hubenak was made to accept the reports.

Motion was seconded by Brother Jerry Milan. Motion passed.

The youth returned from their meeting. 2005-2006 District Three and State King Nick Culliton was introduced and lead the blessing for lunch.

Everyone was dismissed for lunch.

Following the lunch break, President Mary Steinman opened the meeting.

Brother Jerry Milan gave the report on the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum. He reported that they have hired a new administrator – Sandi Wicker. He said $2,000 was issued for the office flooring, cleaning the building, and fixing the new museum.

The brick sale still continues.

Brother John Engelke gave the report for the Education and Nature Center. He asked John Hoelscher to give a report on a camp on Granger Lake (36 miles east Temple). It is 131 acres; no charge – has utilities; long term lease-sub lease from Williamson County. Set up camp to better kid’s life.

Brother Johnnie Krizan, District Three Director, thanked everyone for their support to him because it is a pleasure for him to serve as the director of District Three.

Brother George Pauling gave the FAC and rest home report. The FAC is focused on teaching our groups the proper way to hold meetings. He announced the winners of the Adult Kraslice – Czech Egg Decorating Contest: First Place — Lynda Novak Second Place — JoAnn Mann Third Place — Diana Engelke The S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home is the best in the state. The assisted living increased from 24 to 28 people. In Needville, there’s trouble with the administrator, but it is getting under control.

President Mary Steinman announced that there were 112 in attendance. Collected were 484 canned goods, and Lodge 154 will donate those to the St. Thomas food pantry.

Sister Bessie Petr, District Three Youth Counselor, thanked the kitchen staff for the good meal. District Three Camp will be July 21 through 24 at Camp Val Verde, now named Camp Hope. We will be preparing our own food. LIT camp will be held June 2 through 4 at Bandera, Texas (training). Brother Brian Vanicek asked to meet with the new district officers immediately following the meeting.

There will be a washer contest after the meeting. The 50-50 raffle was $88, and door prizes were given out.

District Seven Family Fun Day/Membership Drive November 12 at Lodge 107, Floresville Lodge 107, Floresville will host the District Seven Family Fun Day/Membership Drive on Sunday, November 12, 2006, at SPJST Lodge 107, Floresville hall on County Road 1303. Registration for contests and door prizes begins at 9:45 a.m. followed by a brief business meeting at 10:30 a.m. Lodge 107 will provide complimentary refreshments for the brunch, and free soft drinks throughout the day. Each lodge is asked to bring its lodge banner for display.

Lo dge L e t t e rs Se c t ion Lodge 1 Fayetteville reports on activities SPJST Lodge 1, Fayetteville held its regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, October 9, 2006, at the SPJST hall with seven members and three guests present.

Vice President Rose Rohde called the meeting to order followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence for deceased members.

The roll call listed two officers absent. The minutes of the August 14, 2006 meeting were approved as read and the treasurer’s report was accepted as presented.

Correspondence received was a thank you note from Tara Michalec for the SPJST Scholarship and an invitation to the musical tribute Muziky, Muziky at the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center on Saturday, October 21.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Sharon Fritsch reported that students from Fayetteville ISD will have two circles of dancers performing Czech dances at Lickskillet.

Ms. Fritsch introduced esteemed guest, Chester Jenke, Sr., State Fraternal Activities Coordinator, and wife Colleen from SPJST Lodge 258, Seguin. Mr. Jenke stated that the SPJST Home Office had bought a block of tickets to the Muziky, Muziky program on Saturday, October 21 to be distributed to lodge officers, compliments of the Home Office. The 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive has started and is seeking donations.

More than 1,600 scholarships valued at more than $1 million have been presented to SPJST scholars since the scholarship program’s inception in 1982. Mr. Jenke also reminded members of the Deer Antler Contest which is held November 1 through January 31, 2007, which will again have two categories: free range deer

He also gave an update on the revitalization of the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum (LAM) building and stated it has received a $200,000 challenge grant provided that SPJST LAM is able to raise $400,000 before December 31. Members are asked to donate or pledge, and any amount is accepted.

FAC Sharon Fritsch reported that at this time last year there were 12 youth participating in Czech dancing for Lickskillet. She is happy to report that number has increased to 21 this year. She and Helen Mikus are working with the youth in teaching them to dance. Sharon also reported on activities which have been taking place at the SPJST hall including reunions, weddings, various parties, and the upcoming Lickskillet Barbecue Cook-Off. She is seeking members to volunteer in helping to

keep these facilities clean before and after these events. Last year, District One received the Silver Award, and we hope to get the Gold Award and will ask KJT and KJZT to participate in Join Hands Day. District One State Field Representative Bill Orsak expressed appreciation to Sales Agent Ronnie Pflughaupt in helping District One surpass $13 million dollars of insurance written, and he hopes to possibly reach the $14 to 15 million goal in sales.

Ronnie Pflughaupt read a list of new SPJST Lodge 1 members: Colton Dedear, Jeffery Allen James, John E. Stanley, Jr., Stacey Stanley, Diane Tinsley, Lawrence Thomas Treybig, Alexis Faith Wright, and Drew Austin Wright. Sharon Fritsch and Debbie Pflughaupt made motions to accept the new members.

Ronnie Pflughaupt reported on the activities of the youth club attending the Astros baseball game at Minute Maid Park in Houston; participating in 2006 Classic Kid Fish in Katy, Texas; joining hands with KJZT St. Anne’s Society No. 10 to participate in the national Join Hands Day celebration; and riding the Fayetteville Chamber of Commerce float at various parades in the area. They have taken on projects like cleaning the SPJST baseball field, the area around the SPJST hall, and areas around the city.

The budget was discussed as to the availability of funds to purchase heaters for the hall and kitchen area at an approximate cost of $3,000.

After discussion, a suggestion was

The community calendar was discussed as to when to schedule the SPJST Christmas party. The decision was made to schedule it for Sunday, December 3 at the SPJST hall with a meeting at 12 noon and lunch at 1 p.m. Postcards will be mailed to all members regarding the next meeting.

Lodge 5 Pilot Point-Tioga announces officers Our regular monthly meeting for Lodge 5, Pilot Point-Tioga was held Saturday, October 7, 2006, at the PointBank Community Center in Pilot Point, Texas.

The meeting was called to order

by President Brian Heitzman at 2:30 p.m. Secretary Dean Carender read the minutes from the last meeting, and they were approved as read.

Treasurer Virginia Pelzel gave the treasurer’s report, and it was approved as read.

Ms. Dean Carender, Secretary, will be checking with the Home Office about the 50-year pin awards and how this should be handled.

Since the death of our president, Bill Heitzman, Vice President Brian Heitzman moved up to fill this position, leaving the office of vice president vacant. As of today, Jack Carender made a motion to install Robert David as our vice president, seconded by Virginia Pelzel.

Lodge 6 Cottonwood reports on October meeting Hi! Our meeting was called to order on Sunday, October 1, 2006, at 4:30 p.m. by our president, Brother Milton Peterson. Youth Leader, Sister Peggy Dobecka, led all in the Pledge of Allegiance and recited the SPJST Motto. There was a moment of silence for all departed members.

Brother Milton called upon Sister Georgia Soukup, Flag Bearer/Guide for her report. She reported 25 members and two guests present.

Welcome to our guests, Patrick McGourick and Shanona Goodman.

Our secretary, Sister Barbara Jean Hykel, read the minutes from our last meeting. The minutes were approved as read with one minor correction.

Sister Barbara also had some correspondence. There was a thank you note from the family of Willie Helona, and a thank you note from the West Volunteer Fire Department SecretaryTreasurer David Maler for a donation.

Sister Barbara also had a thank you letter from the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum for our commemorative brick. There was a letter from Lodge 48, Beyersville regarding the domino tournament on October 21. Watch your Vestnik since I didn’t get all the updates.

Sister Barbara read a letter from Operation Uplink wanting more donations once again. We had elected to donate funds to them for phone cards for our soldiers in Iraq, which is a good cause. There was also a letter from SPJST Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek regarding Czech Heritage Month, which is October.

Sister Peggy Dobecka, Treasurer, gave her report, which was approved as given. As youth leader, she also reported taking cakes to the rest home on October 4. She mentioned honoring grandparents on September 10 and thanked them for all they do for the youth.

The youth are making “Fisher House” Christmas ornaments and also making Christmas ornaments for the contest at the District Three Fall Meeting at Lodge 92, Fort Worth on

Wednesday, October 18, 2006 October 22. October 28 is Make A Difference Day. Peggy asked the mother lodge if they wished to participate. It was mentioned and decided to help St. Martin’s Parish in Tours with the Boo Run on October 28 at Tours and give them our support.

Sister Peggy reported that October 20 will be a Halloween party at the hall, and the youth will do the food. Their next meeting will be at l:30 p.m. on November 5.

Jerelene Lenart, Sunshine Committee, for her report. She reported sending sympathy cards to Tye and Jake Williams, Georgia Skerik, Steve Kaska, Valerie Helona, and Edward Helona, upon the death of their loved one. Our condolences to all families.

Financial Secretary, Brother George Straten, was not present at our meeting, and there was no report.

It was voted on that our appreciation dinner will be on Sunday, November 12 with a noon meal at the hall. The Herbert Brem family will furnish our meal of ribeye steak, baked potatoes, and more. It was approved to have 10 games of bingo with nice prizes. This appreciation dinner is for everyone—and their families—who worked in any capacity for the lodge during the year 2006.

Those attending with October birthdays were Sister Mary Pavlas and Brother Terry Hykel. Door prizes were then drawn. Winners were Sisters Mary Pavlas and Irene Peterson and Brother Milton Peterson.

The minutes of the August meeting were read and approved. Treasurer Mrnustik gave the treasurer’s report.

There was no correspondence to share.

FAC Narro invited the adult members to attend the Grandparents’ Day celebration and awards banquet for the youth club on September 10. The meat will be provided, and the youth are asked to bring side dishes and desserts. She also reported on the District One Fall Fun Day. This will be held on September 24 at Lodge 9, Snook. We were reminded Czech Heritage Month is October.

October Meeting Lodge 17’s monthly meeting was called to order at 2 p.m. on October 1

by Vice President Hildebrand. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited. We did not have any resolutions.

President Gaas was the only officer absent.

The minutes from the September meeting were approved as read. It was also reported that we have two new members. A thank you note was read from the Kolache Festival for our donation.

The youth report was given by Youth Leader Skrabanek. She reported the success of the grandparent s’ appreciation banquet in conjunction with the youth awards/recognition.

More than 100 people were in attendance. The beseda dancers have received many invitations to perform during October. In recognition of Czech Heritage Month, the youth club will again bake cookies and deliver them to schools and other assigned locations during October.

VĚSTNÍK Star award we received for participation in Join Hands Day. She also gave information about the “42” tournament to be held at Lodge 48, Beyersville on October 21.

Old business—the Audit Committee reported all books were in good standing.

New business was our annual memorial service. This will be held on Sunday, December 3 at 5:30 p.m.

With a motion by Mrs. Skrabanek and a second by Mr. Hildebrand, the meeting was adjourned.

Lodge 48 Beyersville progressive “42” tournament this Saturday SPJST Lodge 48, Beyersville will host a progressive “42” tournament this Saturday, October 21, 2006. The registration fee is $10 and includes the noon meal, snacks, and prizes.

Registration begins at 8:15 a.m., and play begins at 9:15. Fifteen games will be played with a time limit of 20 minutes per game. The tournament should end around 4:30 p.m.

We especially invite SPJST members, but anyone is welcome. You do not need a partner as all players will draw numbers and be seated accordingly for the first round. The two winners will move to the next table and split up and play with the losers who remain at that table. There will be no head table, thus all winners will move. We will use the same rules that the SPJST uses.

VĚSTNÍK er. We have heard many great things about this year’s event. We know that this was due mostly to all the help that we continue to receive from our friends and neighbors. The ladies from bunco really pitched in. They helped in almost every capacity. We also want to remember the ladies from Thrall 4-H, Taylor Rodeo Association, and Cindy and Rita from the ’hood. I think they know that we are going to be so loud that night that since they can beat us (noise-wise), they might as well join us! Cindy always does such a great job with the desserts that we just couldn’t have all those great tasting after-dinner treats without her and all of you who baked and donated. Thank you all so very much.

Then there was Rita. Rita must have cloned herself because I could have sworn I saw her in about seven places at once.

Okay, guys, I have not forgotten you. Vanna should watch out because one day Jerry Turek might have her job. He does a great job of pulling those names out and displaying them (although the people who get their name drawn out may not agree). Of course, Mr. Bland thought Jerry did a great job. Then, there are Jerry’s little helpers, otherwise known as his kinfolk. These guys always pitch in and help with the big auction. They aren’t as easy on the eyes as the bunco ladies, but they have more muscle.

Mmmmm! Know what you get when you cross a bunco lady and an auctioneer?

A bunconeer (need not move to Florida to qualify).

Then, there are always all of the members and the youth club. With the exception of yours truly, everyone really pitched in and helped. Robert did a fantastic job of keeping everything running smoothly. He had a lot of great new incentives, and they really panned out. Johnny tended bar.

Instead of tips, though, he got a lot of phone numbers. Of course, they were all the same number (Juanette’s)!

We were very excited to announce that through the generosity of our neighbor (and member), Mr. Dvorak, we are going to purchase one acre of his land so that we can expand our parking lot. Thank you so very much for agreeing to do this.

My memory is so bad I cannot think of every single act that was performed but Juanette, the Schillers, Berans, Alice Wuensche, Bonnie Wolf, Bonnie and Robert, Howard and Mary, Doris, Vanecek family, Urbaneks, Finns, Sherry and Amy Wuensche—you guys all did a great job, and somebody owes you a foot massage—Robert.

Lodge 48 Beyersville members to staff Taylor Food Pantry If you have been looking for a great way to help out the Taylor community, then please help us help those in need. You can take canned food items to any church or drop them off with Shepherd’s Heart in Taylor. The youth will begin rotating with several other churches and civic groups in the Taylor community to provide coverage for the food pantry in Taylor. We will meet on Friday, November 3 to sack the groceries. Donna will call us to let us know the time. We will then meet on Saturday at 8:45 a.m. at Shepherd’s Heart to assist in handing out the food. If you would like to help, please call Donna right away and let her know. What a great way to help the kids provide a community service. We will be in a once-everythree-month rotation.

We would like to remind you about Ladies Bunco Night every second Tuesday of the month. This is held at the hall and starts at 6 p.m.

At the last meeting, Bobby gave us a quick review of the history of the land ownership that our facility sits on. I think that there was a great fight held here one night, too. The information was really interesting though to see how many people had owned the land and then sold it. One person sold it with a 10 percent interest attached in the early 1900s. Wow! That was pretty steep.

The youth will be participating the Taylor Parade of Lights on December 2. Please come out and support them— maybe walk beside them and sing carols. The youth club will be going bowling on November 4. So if

you want an opportunity to use the granny rails without having to admit that you need them, come out with the youth and show ’em how it’s done.

For all of you members who have been sitting at home this year instead of attending meetings, thinking – how can I get involved? Guess what?

Next month is the election of officers, and serving as an officer is a great way to get involved. Heck, you can even be the reporter and get all those free press passes to SPJST events.

(Of course, everybody gets in free!)

We will be enjoying some barbecue brisket and just ask that you bring a veggie and dessert. We are also giving door prizes. All of those names are placed in the December meeting’s door prizes for more chances at those door prizes.

We will decorate our hall for the Christmas season on November 26.

President Benner reported that the ambulance fund-raiser in September was a success. In a motion by Curtis Wolf, seconded by Rita Spinn, the membership voted to give the Holland EMS $4,700.

Five new members were accepted into the lodge in a motion by Doni Powell, seconded by Rita Spinn.

Chairman of the By-Law Committee Rita Spinn said officers will be elected at the November meeting, installed in December, and take office on January 1. Doni Powell moved to accept the by-laws, seconded by Risa Pajestka. Motion passed.

FAC Paula Weir reported the SPJST will hold a deer antler contest.

Scholarship applications are available. Also, there will be a Progressive “42” Domino Tournament at Lodge 48, Beyersville on October 21.

Coleman reported SPJST will again support Join Hands Day in 2007.

Also, October is Czech Heritage Month.

Brother Benner reported the $1,977.05 refund on insurance had been put into the account.

November will be election of officers.

Doni Powell reported 34 new members had been written up. We need 16 more to meet our quota.

Lodge 88, Houston collects items for soldiers Lodge 88, Houston is collecting $5 phone cards, small packages of snacks, and money to purchase items to donate to the Soldiers Assistance Program at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio. The soldiers are patients who have been wounded in Iraq or Afghanistan. Many have families staying in San Antonio. For those who are away from their family, the phone cards are truly appreciated.

Corpus Christi Circle of Women— Krouzek President Frances McDonald called the October 5, 2006, meeting of the Corpus Christi Circle of Women (Krouzek) to order at 11:05 a.m. We recited the Pledge of Allegiance and sang “My Country Tis of Thee”.

Guests were Charles Varro, Bud Duplessis, Peggy and Ed Jednota, and Duane McAllister.

Sunshine announcements—Lilly Hayek had eye problems and fell, hurting her arm. She is presently with her daughter, Wilma. Patsy Dziadek is back and doing fine after her emergency appendectomy. Midge Ryza is in Dallas with her daughter who has a new baby. Peggy Jednota has just become the newest member of our Circle.

Delores Pollock says our membership dues are payable today.

The monthly minutes from September were read and approved.

Treasurer Norma Baker reported the balance.

Jerry Elzner announced that October is Czech Heritage Month. He then introduced his guest, brother-inlaw Charles Varro from Cleveland, Ohio. He talked about the CCC,

Civilian Conservation Corp. He attended a convention of the CCC in Dallas. He said the CCC program lasted from April 1933 to June 1942.

A total number of men enrolled was 3,463,766 in camps in every state in the union, plus Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. He stated a person could eat three meals a day on $.33 per day during the CCC. He also spoke of his experiences and training he received in bookkeeping.

He handed out a fact sheet on the CCC. He served in Pennsylvania three years and three months as an accountant.

His talk was well received and some comments from members remembering the CCC era.

Everyone thanked Chuck for being with us.

Door prizes were awarded, and we enjoyed a meal prepared by Team No. 2.

The next meeting will be November 2 and hosted by Team No. 3.

The meeting adjourned with our motto, Me te se vzdycky radi – May we always love one another.

In Memoriam Resolution of Sympathy We, the members of the Resolution Committee of Lodge Hvezda Texasu, No. 47, Seaton, Texas, on behalf of our membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed brother, WALTER E. POMYKAL, age 81, of Temple who died Monday, September 18, 2006, in a Temple hospital.

Visitation was from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. September 19 at ScanioHarper Funeral Home in Temple.

Services were held at 2 p.m.

W e d n e s d a y , Walter Pomykal September 20 at Temple Brethren Church with Dr. Mark Labaj and Pastor Joe Emerson officiating.

Burial followed at Bellwood Memorial Park.

Walter Pomykal was born August 18, 1925, to Joe V. and Annie (Doskocil) Pomykal in Falls County.

He attended Thompson School until ninth grade. After leaving school, he farmed 160 acres near Temple, Texas, where he raised livestock and poultry and grew corn, oats, cane, and potatoes. He repaired his own farm equipment and did row binding and operated a power press pick-up baler.

He enlisted in the United States Army on January 12, 1945, and trained at Camp Hood where he received his certificate for rifleman.

He served overseas with the 32nd Infantry, 7th Division in Asiatic Pacific Theatre for 11 months. While in the service, he received the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, Army Occupation Ribbon-Japan, Overseas Service Bar and Victory Ribbon.

He was honorably discharged on June 23, 1946. He was proud to have served and showed his patriotism by flying the flag every day at his home.

In the summer of 1944, he met Ella Orsag at a Saturday night dance at Tom Sefcik Hall. When he returned from the service, he and Ella were married on November 4, 1947, at the home of Reverend F.J.

Kostohryz in Temple. They farmed in the Meeks community for seven years. In 1955, they moved to Temple, and in 1956, Walter started his career with Ralph Wilson Plastics. He worked “swing shift” for 25 years and seven years on strictly days. In 1988, he retired from Ralph Wilson Plastics with 32 years of service as a crew leader.

He was baptized on September 29, 1925, at Ocker Brethren Church by the Reverend Joseph Hegar and confirmed into Brethren faith by Reverend F.J. Kostohryz. He was an active member of Temple Brethren Church for more than 40 years. He served on the Board of Deacons for several years, where he held the position of financial secretary, and was a member of the Men’s Brotherhood.

Walter was a member of SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton where he received his 50-year pin. He and Ella received the Brother-Sister Award on December 10, 1995, and the Lifetime Achiever Award in 2004. He was always willing to help at lodge functions. He was a member of RVOS Lodge 1 and served as treasurer. He was also a 50-year member of Woodman of the World Lodge 16, Temple.

Walter always wanted to move back to the country. After retirement, he and Ella moved to Zabcikville in 1990 and lived there until 2003. He loved to garden and do yard work.

For about eight years, he would plow his garden spot with his 1951 Allis Chalmers tractor and plant cucumbers, beans, watermelons, cantaloupes, and tomatoes. He loved to grow cucumbers and supply Temple and East Bell County peoples’ “needs” for pickling.

He enjoyed barbecuing, making sunshine pickles, and spending time with the grandkids and family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Ella, of 58 years, on February 3, 2006.

He is survived by daughters, Joyce Skrabanek and husband James of Temple, Judy Pechal and husband Edwin of Seaton, Janelle Novosad and husband Rickie of Seaton; grandchildren, Gary Skrabanek and wife Windee of Temple, Erin Zipperlen of Bryan, E.J. Pechal of Temple, Shannon Pechal of Temple, Heath Novosad of Woodlands, and Heather Novosad of Houston; sisters, Lillian

Hoff and husband Marvin of Rosebud and Vallie Mae Hrachovy of Cameron; and several nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Pallbearers were his grandsons and Wyatt Zipperlen, Leonard Hoff, and Larry Hoff.

Memorials may be made to Temple Brethren Church General Fund.

Resolution Committee Dorothy Pechal Joyce Skrabanek LaVerne Vanicek —SPJST—

Expression of Sympathy On behalf of Lodge 54, West, the Resolution Committee wishes to express sincere sympathy to the family and friends of our departed member, MARY CECILE GREENE, age 68, who passed away early Sunday morning, October 1, 2006, in Waco.

A rosary was recited and mass of Christian burial was celebrated at 3 p.m. Wednesday, October 4 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church of the Assumption, with the Reverend Ed Karasek as celebrant assisted by the Reverend Mary Greene Ann Hitt. Burial followed at St. Mary’s Cemetery near West. The family received visitors from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, October 3 at Aderhold Funeral Home.

Mary was born on April 19, 1938, in West, the daughter of John and Leona (Polasek) Nemecek. She attended St. Mary’s School and graduated from West High School in 1956 and Sam Houston State University in 1959 with a Bachelor of Education degree.

On August 9, 1959, she was united in marriage to Jim Greene in West.

Mary taught at several schools in the area including Mountainview Elementary, Lacy-Lakeview Elementary, and Elm Mott. She also was manager and co-owner of Nemecek Bros. Meat Market for 12 years.

Mary had a love for animals and her livestock and competed in barrel racing for many years. She won the National State Finals in barrel racing in the 50 and over age division. At age 61, Mary also won the barrel racing competition at the World Paint Horse Show. She was a member of the West Longhorn Club, where she was one of the first Rodeo Sweethearts and served as rodeo secretary for many years; Texas Senior Rodeo Association, where she also served as secretary for many years; and Heart of Texas Fair and Rodeo Association, where she served as livestock secretary. Mary was also a member of Catholic Daughters of America Court No. 829 and a lifelong member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church of the Assumption. She was a member of SPJST Lodge 54, West for 42 years.

Survivors include her beloved husband of 47 years, Jim Greene of West; son Cliff Greene of Palestine; adopted son Emanuel Mitchell, Jr. of West; granddaughter Autumn of Idaho Falls, Idaho; uncle Raymond Nemecek of West; aunt Adele Nemecek of West; nephews Sean Greene of Rosenberg and Chantz Greene and wife Jodie of Rock Springs; sister-in-law Paulette Greene of Rosenberg; her horse, RB’s Dude; Boston Terrier Bulldog named Rocky; and several other cousins, relatives, and friends.

Active pallbearers were Paul Barton, Jim Fuller, Ricky Luke, Butch Wardlaw, John Embry, and Sam Crain. Honorary pallbearers were the Texas Senior (65-plus) Rodeo Group.

Memorials may be made to St. Mary’s Parish Center; First United Methodist Church of West; or the American Cancer Society.

Aderhold Funeral Home in West was in charge of arrangements.

Expression of Sympathy We, the members of the Resolution Committee of Lodge 92, Fort Worth, Texas, on behalf of our membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed brother, GEORGE W. RIPPIN, SR. George W. Rippin, Sr. passed away on Thursday, August 17, 2006. He was born on July 21, 1926, in Fort Worth, Texas. He served in the United States Army during World War II and the Korean War. He retired from Bell Helicopter.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Bob Rippin.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Elsie “Kitty” Rippin; daughters Deborah Marcum and Karen Ruiz and husband Rob; son George W. Rippin Jr.; grandson Matthew Marcum; sister, Edith Rozko; and brother Dick Rippin.

George was a valued member of our lodge and will be dearly missed.

Expression of Sympathy We, the members of the Resolution Committee of Lodge 92, Fort Worth, Texas, on behalf of our membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed brother, DANIEL HENRY ZUROVETZ. Daniel Henry Zurovetz, died Friday, September 29, 2006. The funeral took place on Monday, October 2 at 1 p.m. at Thompson’s Harveson and Cole Funeral Home. A rosary was recited on Sunday, October 1. Burial was in the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery.

Daniel was born on June 8, 1924, in Granger, Texas. He enlisted in the United States Army and served in the Pacific Theater during World War II. After the war, he moved to Fort Worth, and before retiring in l982, he spent 28 years with Station 21 of the Fort Worth Fire Department. He also served as the city photographer for the Fire Safety Program.

He was a member of St. Andrew Catholic Church for more than 50 years and was also a member of the

He was preceded in death by his parents, George Sr. and Louise Kubala Zurovetz; and brother George Zurovetz, Jr. Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Ann Zurovetz of Fort Worth; son Timothy Zurovetz of Fort Worth; granddaughter Britney Zurovetz of Fort Worth; brother August Zurovetz of El Paso; sisters Albina Naizer of Georgetown, Bernice McGrody of California, and Lorine Valenta of Temple; and nephews and nieces.

Expression of Sympathy We, the officers and membership of SPJST Lodge 1, Fayetteville, express our heartfelt sympathy to the family of LEE EDWARD BACA, age 79, of Fayetteville and formerly of Houston, who passed away Wednesday evening, September 20, 2006, at his home.

The funeral service was held Saturday, September 23 at St. John Catholic Church in Fayetteville with Reverend Jack Maddux officiating.

Interment followed in the Fayetteville Catholic Cemetery.

He was born April 13, 1927, in Fayetteville, the son of John and Marie (Zelesky) Baca. He served in the United States Army during World War II from 1945 until 1948 achieving the rank of sergeant. After serving his country, he returned to Fayetteville to work at the Chevrolet dealership in Fayetteville. He played drums with the John Baca Polka Band. He later moved to Houston where he worked as a salesman for Alamo Linen Service and retired in 1986 and moved back to Fayetteville.

He was a member of St. John Catholic Church; SPJST Lodge 1, Fayetteville; Sons of Hermann; and the Shelby American Legion Post.

Survivors include daughter Alicia Needham and husband Jim of Corpus Christi; son John Baca of Brenham; grandchildren, Clark James Needham and Lauren Marie Needham, both of College Station,

and Kenton Lee Needham of Corpus Christi; brother Clarence Baca and wife Lou of Houston; and sister Rose Marie Rohde and husband Jim of Fayetteville.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and son Lee Edward Baca, Jr. Memorials may be made to the Fayetteville Catholic Cemetery Fund; or Fayetteville Area Historical Museum.

Expression of Sympathy We the undersigned Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge 88, Houston, Texas and on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincere and heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed member, JOHN JAMES LACINA, age 86, who passed away on Sunday, August 6, 2006.

He was born in Schulenburg, Texas, on November 19, 1919. He was a World War II veteran and was a resident of Houston, Texas, since 1945. He was retired from Moncrief Lenora Manufacturing Company after 30 years.

He was a member of All Saints Catholic Church and a former member of St. Christopher’s Catholic Church and the Men’s Club of SPJST Lodge 88.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Ann of 58 years; parents Frank and Mary Lacina; sisters Annie Janecka and Hilda Wardeman; and brothers Raymond, George, Fritz, Robert, Bill, and Edwin Lacina.

He is survived by sister-in-law Wilbertha Lacina; niece Dianne Robinson; nephews Dennis and Glenn Lacina; nephew Jhonas Twardowsky and wife Janice; special niece and nephew, Rita and Paul Uschak; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Doyle will be remembered as a loving husband, proud father, grandfather, and great-grandfather to a family who will cherish many fond memories of time spent together.

Doyle served in the United States Navy during World War II in the Pacific. After service, he worked 19 years for Houston Lighting and Power Company until he and his wife, Vivian, went into the grocery business. He owned and operated Doyle’s Drive Inns for 31 years. He served as director of the Houston Retail Grocer’s Association and Texas Grocer’s Association for many years.

He was a member of Melrose Masonic Lodge 1294 and SPJST Lodge 88, Houston.

Doyle is preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his loving wife, Vivian; children, Diane Baker and husband Glen, Jed Clifton and wife Delys, and Larry Clifton; grandchildren, Danielle, Brittany, Justin, Katie, Larry, Kenny, Jonathan, Reece, Stacie, and Candice; and six greatgrandchildren.

Expression of Sympathy The officers and members of SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis, want to express our heartfelt sympathy to the family and friends of, ELIZABETH MOUCKA. Elizabeth Moucka, 85, died Wednesday, September 27, 2006, at the Medical City Hospital in Dallas.

She was born on December 30, 1920, in Ennis, the daughter of Louis J. and Clara Haskovec Kudrna. She was reared in Ennis and graduated from Ennis High School in 1937. On

February 17, 1942, she was married to Leslie Moucka.

After their marriage, they lived in Ennis. She was employed by Kucera Department Store for a time. She was then employed by American Carbon and Ennis Business Forms as an inventory clerk.

She was a member of St. John Catholic Church; SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis; Sokol; and WFLA. She is survived by daughter Elizabeth A. Krajca of Ennis; sister Dorothy M. Kudrna of Ennis; sisterin-law Dorothy J. Kudrna of Ennis; grandchildren, Lee Ann, Wesley J., and James A. Krajca; and numerous

nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by husband Leslie on December 7, 1979; and brother G. Louis Kudrna on November 8, 2005.

A memorial to the SPJST Scholarship Fund has been made in memory of Sister Elizabeth Moucka.

Youth Letters Section District Seven Family Fun Day coming soon The District Seven Family Fun Day will be held on November 12, 2006, at Lodge 107, Floresville. Each youth club is asked to donate a prize for the district youth club prize drawing.

Individual donations are also welcome. There will be a spare change collection benefiting the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum (LAM).

Come and enjoy a day of fun including bunco. Don’t forget to enter the Christmas ornament contest.

Lodge 30, Taiton Youth Club reports on October meeting The October 8, 2006, meeting of SPJST Lodge 30, Taiton Youth Club was called to order at 10 a.m. by President Jarrett Dluhos.

Jarrett led the Pledge of Allegiance.

The roll of officers and members was called by Secretary Danielle Zalman.

Jenna Mae Treumer and Jo Ann Hlavaty were introduced as guests at the meeting.

Secretary Danielle read the September meeting minutes. The minutes were approved as read.

Treasurer Kenna Bubela gave the treasurer’s report. The dues’ report was given.

Old business—members were reminded that the prize drawing tickets were due at the meeting. Members were also reminded that there are many contests that can be entered through Texas Fraternal Congress.

Call (800) 727-7578 The SPJST District Six Fall Meeting will be held on October 8 with Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje hosting the event. All the members who helped at the Taiton Fall Festival were thanked.

New business—members were told that if there was anything that they would like to see changed to please inform Youth Leader Lisa Bubela as the DYC meeting will be held on October 28. It was stated that Texas Fraternal Congress will be held on October 14 in San Antonio.

Kenna Bubela was the October birthday celebrant. Poems were read, and door prizes were exchanged.

Next Meeting—November 5 The next meeting with be held on November 5 at 9 a.m. at the Taiton Community Center. The craft will be a Thanksgiving centerpiece, and it will be donated to be a decoration at the El Campo Thanksgiving dinner at the Civic Center. The charity will be canned goods for a needy family for Thanksgiving.

Lodge 32, Victoria Youth Club sets October activities Dear Members, We will meet at Chuck E. Cheese on Thursday, October 19 from 4 to 8 p.m. The youth club will pay for all eligible youth. Youth will receive pizza and drinks and $7 worth of tokens. All parents and family members who eat that night will help our youth club because we will receive 10 percent of sales from those who are there for SPJST. For example, if someone orders $20 worth, the youth

club will receive 10 percent of that amount. We will also celebrate October birthdays. Please come on out to Chuck E. Cheese’s on Thursday, October 19 between 4 and 8 p.m. to support our youth club.

Lodge 88, Houston Youth Club Halloween party this Saturday Dear Members, Our annual Halloween party will be this Saturday, October 21 starting at 6:30 p.m. We will have a costume contest, games, food, door prizes, and lots of fun! We always have a great

time, and I like to meet new friends— young and old. Our party is open to everyone—not just children or members. You don’t have to wear a costume, but if you do, you can enter the costume contest. Please bring your friends with you, and maybe they will join SPJST, too.

Also, I encourage each of you to bring canned goods for the food bank so we can start collecting early. I hope to see you all there for a night of fun!

Lodge 202 Jourdanton youth enjoy Czech dinner Lodge 202, Jourdanton Youth Club met with the adult lodge on October 1, 2006, to celebrate Czech Heritage Month. The youth members enjoyed the Czech meal and desserts followed by a short meeting.

President CeCe Reyes called the meeting to order. Everyone was reminded to keep collecting old cell phones, canned tabs, and eyeglasses.

The club will be doing the shoe box Christmas project so members were asked to start saving shoe boxes. We voted to go to the Corn Maze for the club fall outing. Members began the book collection drive for the planned donation to the Atascosa County Head Start program for Make a Difference Day later in October.

Members were encouraged to enter the upcoming Atascosa County Fair and reminded to work on Christmas ornaments for the District Seven Fall Meeting to be hosted by Lodge 107, Floresville on November 12.

Houston County CHS sets October 28 reunion

Austin Czech Historical Society plans October 24 meeting

Once again, it’s October and time for the Fourth Annual Houston County Czech Heritage Reunion. The reunion is set for Saturday, October 28, 2006, beginning at 10 a.m. at the St. Francis of the Tejas Catholic Church Parish Center in Crockett, Texas.

This year’s reunion will be our best ever! Many of our members will celebrate the 100th year of their ancestor’s immigration from the CzechSlovak lands to America. All immigrant families will be acknowledged, many receiving certificates.

The Houston County Czech Heritage group will be awarded a special certificate from State Representative Chuck Hopson’s office. There is also proclamations from the Mayor of Crockett, and the Houston County Commissioner Court will adopt a proclamation declaring October as Czech Heritage Month in Houston County recognizing the Czechs contributions to our county’s, prosperity, heritage, and culture.

Bring a covered dish, old documents, photos, and keepsakes for all to see.
