Editor’s Note Happy Grandparents’ Day

his Sunday, September 10 is a very special day for many of our SPJST members. It’s National Grandparents’ Day. Several years ago when I was a youth leader, the youth club planned a ceremony to honor all grandparents in the community. I decided to research the history of National Grandparents Day so I contacted the founder, Marian McQuade. I had the wonderful pleasure of speaking to her.

She was so excited that we were recognizing and honoring grandparents. She asked me to encourage the young people to spend quality time with their grandparents. She also stated the importance of grandchildren writing down the life stories of their grandparents. Young people can learn a lot from grandparents — about history and about life. To all of our SPJST grandparents — this is your day. Enjoy it, and thanks for being a special part of our lives!

Work in Progress As we worked on much of this week’s Vestnik, Katherine, Lisa, and I in the Communications office were able to watch the entire progress of the Home Office expansion from our big office window.

It’s amazing the progress that was made in just a few days. On Sunday, there was a parking lot filled with lots of trees. By Tuesday, the area was filled with piles of dirt, downed trees, and unhappy birds and squirrels! On Thursday, it was a completely leveled area with plumbers moving in.

Although it’s a little rough right now, it will all be worth it in about a year when we have much needed space at the Home Office. Stay tuned. Pictures of the progress are coming soon.

Really Big News Congratulations, SPJST! 2006 is another successful year. The goal of this year’s membership campaign — Action ’06 — was officially achieved on August 23 when the 2,625 application was received for the year. Way to go, sales agents!

Thank you for your hard work. As of August 31, 2,746 apps have been written this year and about $110 million of insurance. The Insurance Department also reports that each district wrote at least $1 million of insurance in August. Achieving Action ’06 means that all of the incentives for lodges, youth clubs, and members will be presented at the SPJST Awards Banquet in February, 2007. More details of the big news in next week’s Vestnik.

We Remember Although five years have passed since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, the tragic events of that day remain fresh in the minds of most Americans. As we focus on rebuilding and recovering, we continue to grieve and remember. Those who lost their lives as well as those who lost friends and family are forever in our thoughts and prayers. Today, we remain committed to making the world a safer place, where terrorism and its tenets are not tolerated.

Progress has been made, but work remains to be done. We’re proud to be Americans, and we are forever grateful to the brave men and women of our Armed Forces, both past and present, who fight to protect our freedom and the American way of life. They are our heroes, and we salute their courage, patriotism and dedication. God bless our soldiers, and God bless America.

FROM THE SUPREME LODGE PRESIDENT

Supreme Lodge President responds to letter Dear Brothers and Sisters, I am writing to call your attention to a correspondence printed in the Wednesday, August 23, 2006, issue of the Vestnik. The letter was attributed to Hilda Kuzel Burtis of Lodge 15, Buckholts.

The opening section of the letter reflects Sister Burtis’ sentimental observations about living on the farm and changing times. Midway through the correspondence, Ms. Burtis addresses the Supreme Lodge and the SPJST’s current building project. As it reads, one could get the impression that the new addition to the SPJST Home Office will cost $10 million. In an article which appeared on the front page of the May 3, 2006, Vestnik, it was noted that with a bid of $2.2 million, Vanguard Contractors of Temple was selected as low bidder for the 16,000-square foot addition. Also important to note is that the purpose of the addition, as stated in the May 3 article, is to meet the member servicing needs of our growing fraternal

order. The building will include space for offices as well as an in-house training facility. The decision to build on to the existing SPJST Home Office was based on a nine-month process during which time several options — including the purchase of land and new construction — were considered.

The most practical and cost-effective solution was to simply stay put and add on to the building.

District Two Fall Meeting

Sunday, September 17, 2006 Lodge 29, Taylor Dear Members, Hula time is coming to Taylor, Texas, on Sunday, September 17.

This year’s District Two Fall Meeting and Fun Day will be hosted by Lodge 29, Taylor, and the meeting will have a Hawaiian theme.

Everyone who attends the meeting will receive a Hawaiian lei. Wear your grass skirts for the costume contest. Prizes will be awarded to those dressed in the best Hawaiian costumes.

Activities will include a Christmas ornament contest for youth and adults, country stores, a cake walk, and a silent auction.

We ask everyone to please bring two canned goods for the country stores and a cake for the cake walk. Everyone will receive 10 tickets for the games.

Lodge 29, Taylor will serve a delicious evening meal for only $2 at 5 p.m.

District Two Family Fun Day September 17 at Lodge 29, Taylor

Dear District Two Members, As I stated before, our District Two Fall Meeting will be Sunday, September 17 at Lodge 29, Taylor. Registration will be from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., and the meeting will start at 2 p.m.

This is our “fun” meeting, and we will have the spin wheels and cake walk.

We need items for both.

There will also be a cake walk for the children along with other fun things to do.

Our theme this year is going to be a good old “Hawaiian Luau.” Come dressed for the event because we will have a costume contest and who knows, you may win first place. Our other contest is the Christmas ornament, so work on these and bring them with you.

Parents, the children are having a Christmas ornament contest, also.

Please help them remember to bring their ornaments to the meeting.

DYC Patsy has planned a silent auction for the district youth club and would appreciate all items that you may like to donate. She will also need our help in bidding on these items, so let’s all do our part and raise the money for the youth.

Lodge 29, Taylor has promised us a great meal for all to enjoy. So come on—let’s all be in Taylor on September 17 and let’s have some fun.

Dear Members, New FAC Reporting Guidelines Offer Flexibility Lodge FACs take note: Three important fraternal activity recordkeeping changes were discussed and approved during the July Supreme Lodge meeting. I believe they will benefit all lodges working to achieve incentives in the Action ’06 Membership Drive.

The first change allows lodges to receive an “activity credit” for routinely holding monthly meetings.

Holding regular lodge meetings is an important first step in making a positive fraternal difference for your members and in the community.

The second change allows lodges to receive an “activity credit” for simply completing and returning to the Home Office all of their required reporting documents. This includes forms requested by the Office of the Secretary-Treasurer as well as the mid-year and year-end reports requested by the Office of the State FAC. The third change provides lodges with greater flexibility in meeting the incentive program activity requirements. Lodges will now be able to receive credit for hosting the same

Thanks for Supporting Our Talented Youth SPJST State Youth Achievement Day was held at the Mayborn Convention Center in Temple on Saturday, August 5. If you missed this event, you missed some wonderful youth projects and performances.

Congratulations to all the young people who participated in the many craft and talent categories. Also, congratulations and thanks to all the parents, youth counselors and the many volunteers who worked behind the scenes to make this event a big success.

Grandparents Day is September 10 September 10 is Sunday, Grandparents Day. This is a day to remember those who are special in our daily lives. Everyone is somebody’s grandchild and can be involved in the observance of this wonderful day of celebration.

Lodge 196, Houston-West hosts District Five Fall Meeting and Family Day September 16 District Five’s Fall Meeting and Family Day is Saturday, September 16, 2006. Lodge 196, Houston-West is the host for the day’s events.

Registration will begin at 10:30 a.m., and a brief meeting will start at 11 a.m. A social with refreshments and a meal will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The meal will be potluck with the district providing fried chicken, so break out your recipes for your favorite salad and/or vegetable to share.

For our dessert table, donations of cakes, pies, and other pastries will be welcomed.

After the meal, there will be activities that all can enjoy. The youth will have their Christmas ornament contest, and the adults will have the needlework, arts and crafts (handwork only), and a cake-baking contest. The cakes must include a copy of the recipe and be made from scratch. Registration for these items will start at 10:30 a.m. and end around 11 a.m. Judging will begin shortly after 11 a.m.

The District Five youth members will also have their annual District Challenge Day, and we look forward to cheering them on. The adults are welcome to join in on the games. There will be a tug of war, egg toss, watermelon seed spitting contest, and each lodge youth club will sponsor a booth

with activities like a fishing pond, face painting, and a lollipop tree.

To make the day successful, donations of items for door prizes, and pastries for auctioning will be greatly appreciated. Proceeds from the auction will go into the District Five Fund.

Door prizes will be drawn periodically during the day.

Come and enjoy the day, and the hospitality of Lodge 196, HoustonWest. The agenda will be provided in next week’s Vestnik.

We would like to see all the lodges in District Five represented at this fall meeting/family day.

Remember, your attendance and participation will count toward your lodge’s fraternal hours.

I also want to encourage all of our local lodges to keep their local and statewide elected officials in mind as they host local lodge and district events and celebrations in the coming weeks and months. As the old saying goes, “Seeing is believing.” And even if they don’t come, they know that they’ve been invited — and that’s important.

VĚSTNÍK Plan to Observe Czech Heritage Month in October October is “Czech Heritage Month.” Many of the lodges that I have attended the past month are planning to host a Czech covered dish meal at the October meeting in honor of Czech Heritage Month. This will be the perfect opportunity to show off your talents and prepare your favorite Czech dish.

Lots of good traditional — and modern — recipes can be found in the SPJST Cookbooks, Volumes One and Two. The cookbooks, which also make great Christmas gifts, are available from the SPJST Home Office at a cost of $11 each. That price includes postage and handling. Also, regarding Czech Heritage Month: Good times await those who travel to the State Fair of Texas in Dallas on Sunday, October 8. That’s Heritage Day and once again, SPJST lodges in the Dallas-Fort Worth area will be represented by their members at the celebration which takes place just inside the entrance to the fair park. The SPJST Home Office will also help out again with this year’s Heritage Day, and we invite you to come out for a good time.

To get you in the mood for Czech Heritage Month, be sure to stop by the Kolache Festival in Caldwell, Texas, on September 9. There will be numerous events taking place through the day. SPJST is a sponsor of the festival and will also sponsor the Kolache Eating Contest. Also, be sure to watch for and support lodges hosting Czech Heritage Day observances in your area!

100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive Starts October 1 Spread the word! October 1 starts the SPJST 100 Pennies Drive which will benefit the scholarship fund.

Through your generous donations, SPJST has been able to continue to provide scholarships to members who wish to further their education.

Donations of any amount will be accepted and added into the general scholarship fund that is maintained by the Home Office. No amount is too small or too large. The 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive runs through March 31.

There’s No Time Like Now for Brainstorming As we look forward to fall and cooler weather, this is an excellent time to take advantage of brainstorming sessions. On an annual basis, every lodge should take the time to brainstorm — to evaluate what it is doing and determine where it would like to go.

A number of lodges have already conducted brainstorming sessions which have been facilitated by Home Office personnel. Working together in a fun atmosphere, we work with the officers and lodge members to identify the positive as well as negative factors acting upon the lodge and then come up with as many ways as possible to build on the positives and eliminate the negatives. The whole process takes less than an hour!

SPJST Scholarship Applications— Call Today!

Graduating high school seniors and college undergraduates who have been SPJST members for one or more years are encouraged to apply for an SPJST Scholarship.

Established in 1982, the SPJST Scholarship Program is funded by an allocation of the SPJST Supreme Lodge and through community contributions by SPJST members. Accordingly, the more funds available, the more scholarships awarded. In 2006, the SPJST awarded a total of 64 scholarships for $64,500 through its scholarship program.

Lodge 28 Lodge 29, Taylor East Bernard meets sets barbecue September 10 cook-off Dear Members, On Sunday, the 10th of September, Lodge Karel Jonas will hold its monthly meeting at 1 p.m. in the East Bernard Branch Library, located at 746 Clubside Drive. There will be one item of importance on the agenda which may or may not be resolved immediately. Other items will be expedited as needed.

The fraternal hour buffet luncheon, at this writing, will have a standard fare.

On September 29 and 30, 2006, SPJST Lodge 29, Taylor will host its Sixth Annual Barbecue Cook-Off. The lodge hall is located at 5025 FM 619, two miles east of Taylor. Turn north off of Highway 79 onto FM 619, and we are about a mile up the road.

The hall is a large two-story building.

The entry fee for barbecue cookers is $80 which includes chicken, pork ribs, and brisket. There is a $10 entry fee for jackpot butter beans and a $10 entry fee for jackpot sausage. Cash

Lodge 1, Fayetteville Member Brandon Slovak Wins 2006 Classic Kid Fish

On July 29, 2006, Lodge 1, Fayetteville member Brandon Slovak, 9, won the 2006 Kid Fish Classic with his 21-inch catfish. Brandon was invited to participate in the 2006 Classic Kid Fish when he won his age division, ages seven to 11, with his 29-inch catfish at the local Kid Fish in Friendswood, Texas, in March, 2006. Over 300 kids ranging from ages three to 16 were invited from around Texas to participate in the 2006 Classic Kid Fish held in Katy, Texas.

Brandon won a $1,000 savings bond, and a $500 donation will be given to his elementary school, Hood Case, in Alvin, Texas. Brandon is the son of Steven and

Lodge 35, Elk honors 50-year members The meeting of Lodge 35, Elk was called to order by President Randy Pavelka on Sunday, August 13. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by the members. All officers were present.

Secretary Carla Pavelka read the meeting minutes from the July meeting. They were approved as read.

Treasurer Barbara Pavelka gave the treasurer’s report. There was too much money in the treasury. Freddie Kubitza made a motion to put $10,000 in savings. Janie Brewer seconded it.

We were so glad to see you all at the meeting. There were about 40 people present. We were glad to have Sweetie Fuller as a visitor. We haven’t seen her in a long time.

Come back again, Sweetie. Ella Mary Kimball was back again. She is feeling better. President Randy Pavelka and Vice President Freddie Kubitza honored Elizabeth Kubitza and Fred Kubitza with their 50-year pins. They were the only two present. The other pins will be sent to Linda Kroll, Sandra Box, Weldon Brokosky, and Johnny Holub. Sorry they could not be there. They sure missed a good dinner—fried chicken and barbecue was served.

Thanks to Carla Pavelka and Debra Kubitza who put it all together. Thank you, both. You did a good job.

Lodge 54, West to honor lifetime achievers The second quarterly meeting of Lodge 54, West was held on June 2, 2006. President Wilburn Willis called the meeting to order and welcomed everyone in attendance. He led us in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. We remained standing for a few moments in honor of all previously deceased members and for all of our military personnel who are fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Secretary Anne Emery held a roll call of officers and sales agents. All were in attendance. She read the minutes of the March meeting.

These were accepted as read. Two items of correspondence were read.

Financial Secretary Maxine Sefcik gave her report which was accepted as read. She reported that new juvenile applicants signed by Janice Kaluza are Derek Jackson, Marissa Jackson, Morgan Jackson, and Raiven Jackson. A juvenile applicant signed up by Wilburn Willis is Brittney Millsaps. We welcome these members and thank the sales agents for their work.

Karen Debbendener, daughter of Dennis and Deborah Debbendener, is attending Tarleton University and will graduate in December, 2007, with a business management degree.

She was an SPJST Scholarship recipient. Aaron Kolar, son of David and Rebecca Kolar, received several scholarships; namely, Westfest, West Athletic Booster Club, and MCC General. Randi Jo Vrba, daughter of Shirley Vrba and granddaughter of Ernest and Mona Zahirniak, received

the Hazel Montgomery Scholarship.

Leanna Ferrero, a student at West High School, won third place in the “Voice of Democracy” competition.

Leanna is the daughter of Larry and Suzanne Ferrero and the granddaughter of Richard and Annie Hlavenka.

Congratulations to all the above mentioned achievers. Our lodge extends best wishes in their future endeavors.

Lodge 81 Needville reports on August meeting The monthly meeting of Lodge 81, Needville was held on Sunday, August 20, 2006. At 12 noon, Special Funds Chairman Gilbert Walzel gave a prayer of thanks. We had a delicious meal of barbecue beef and sausage,

which was provided by Winnifred Susan. She bought the barbecue from the Needville Volunteer Fire Department annual fund-raiser.

Thanks, Winnie. We also had an assortment of side dishes and desserts provided by the lodge members.

Thanks goes to Darlene Blinka and her kitchen committee for getting everything set up for us. Also, thanks goes to everyone who brought the side dishes and desserts.

President Vincent Newman called the business meeting to order at 1 p.m.

Brother Newman led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. All officers answered the roll call.

On our sick list is Johnny Kujawa.

Treasurer Benita Walzel read her report, and it was approved as read.

Special Funds Chairman Gilbert Walzel read the schedule of events for the coming month. He then read his special funds reports, and they were also approved as read.

Under old business, it was decided that we will invite the Needville Little League Board members to our next social and meeting in September.

Jeanette Newman will send out invitations this week. Also, the new sign committee met before the meeting and stated that they’re waiting for another proposal.

Under new business, President Vincent Newman said that two new members needed to be voted in.

Unanimously voted in as new members were Jaime Lynn Mikulec and Marcus C. Mikulec. We look forward to meeting you soon.

Under other business, Bradley Stavinoha reminded us that Lauren Wright will come to the September meeting to tell us about her experiences as an exchange student in the Czech Republic. If you’d like to hear her speak, please come to the September meeting.

Lodge 84, Dallas hosts fellowship day Once again, the monthly Fellowship Day held on August 15, 2006, was a great success. We enjoyed the company of those who lived close by and those who traveled from afar.

We want to thank Adolph Provazek, Laddie Gajdica, and Norbert Blazek for bringing their accordions and entertaining all of us by playing some polkas and waltzes.

Everyone enjoyed the music. Please feel free to bring your instruments anytime. We love the entertainment!

And, this time some of the ladies even joined in by singing along.

A big thank you to Betty Olson for bringing her portable sewing machine and teaching sewing techniques. If anyone else has something to teach others, we would love for you to come and share your talents.

Lodge 88, Houston reports on August meeting As usual, our meeting began at 7:30 p.m. All officers were present.

The invocation was given by Brother Sydney Jurcak, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. Secretary Marceil Malak read the names of seven deceased members since the July meeting, and the membership stood in silent tribute to these members.

Minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. Sister Clara Broz gave the financial report for July, and President Bruce announced the report would be filed for audit.

A representative of Texas Home Health, Natalie Berzina, spoke briefly explaining the various services of the organization, such as skilled nursing, safety evaluation, therapy, non-medical services.

President Bruce reported on the success of the awards party and thanked all who helped prepare and those who served during the party.

FAC Esther Heinsohn reminded us of Czech Heritage Month in October, Grandparents Day on September 10, and that most districts will have fall meetings in September. The District Five Fall Meeting will be held at Lodge 196, Houston-West on September 16.

Youth Leader Barbara Gonzalez reiterated the various activities at youth camp in July. Must have been lost of fun! She announced that Lodge 88 had two first place winners, one second place winner, and four third place winners at State YAD. Congratulations, youth club members.

The youth will be sponsoring the Challenge Day event at the district meeting. Sister Gonzalez thanked Carol Stayton for continuing to bring the bread and hotdogs for the youths’ Thursday night kitchen sales.

Brother Johnny Broz, Sergeant-atArms, reported 75 persons in attendance and 11 door prizes available.

Entertainment Chairman Betty Theiss announced the names of upcoming bands for the next several weeks and encouraged better attendance.

Social Night Chairman Mildred Holeman happily announced that July was a good month for her committee.

A total of 217 were in attendance one week, a number higher than has been reported for quite some time. She thanked Fred Buri for agreeing to be a bingo caller. Regarding the need for funds for LAM, she reminded us of the $200,000 challenge from the foundation in Temple to provide matching funds.

Chairman of the Board John Broz reported on the awards party and expressed his disappointment that items voted on and planned by the Executive Committee were changed.

He reported on the next several western dances. Also, due to the fact that no rental has been secured for the last Saturday of September, the Telstars were hired for a dance.

Sister Lowrina Lindemann reporting for the Birthday Club and announced a fried chicken and covered dish luncheon for the next meeting.

Sister Sherry Miller, Chairman of the Audit Committee, reported that the lodge records for April, May, and June were audited and moved that they be accepted. The motion was seconded and approved.

Scholarship Committee Chairman Carol Havemann reported that the

VĚSTNÍK applications for scholarships are in the office ready for pickup by seniors. A portion of the application must be returned by December 31. She thanked Johnny Broz and his helpers for the donation of $121 received from the sale of aluminum cans. She then read a list of the donations received from various members in memory of Brother A.J. Stayton.

Sister Linda Wehring urged attendance at the Luau Party on August 20.

Dorothy Pflughaupt announced a workers party and asked for lists of workers from the various committees.

District Five Director Larry W. Pflughaupt reported that at the recent YAD some exceptionally creative ideas were presented, such as an onion pie entered in the baking contest. It won second place. He also told us of the Home Office building addition of 16,000 square feet and increasing the interest rate paid on SPJST annuities to 5 percent. Lodge 88 has 5,782 members and 6,691 certificates in force.

President Bruce announced that Brother Ed Jelinek was not in attendance due to having knee surgery. His recovery is progressing quite well.

The list of new members and transfers was read by Secretary Malak, and they were approved. Members reported on the sick list are Enos Wessels, Mary Roznovsky, Johnny Kosut, Ora Nell Hassebrock, Josephine Buri, and Margie Anders. Let’s keep these members in our prayers and perhaps a card or phone call to cheer them up.

Agnes Haney thanked all who called or sent cards to Tom during his recent illness.

Brother Johnny Broz made a motion to transfer $3,000 from the unused awards party funds (accumulated over a period of years) to the general fund. The motion was seconded and, after discussion, was approved.

President Bruce called for an Executive Committee Meeting on Monday, August 21 at 7 p.m. to disSister Linda cuss Czech Day. Wehring then announced that with the death of A.J. Stayton, a vacancy existed on the Remunerations Committee and nominated Sister Carol Stayton for the position. No other nominations were heard, and Sister Stayton was elected by acclamation.

Guide Josephine Pflughaupt reported 75 members and one guest in attendance. A list of birthdays and anniversaries was read and “Happy Birthday” was sung, followed by the drawing for the door prizes. As usual, social activities followed the meeting and were enjoyed by all.

Cole, 16, is the son of Eric and Cindy Cappel of Dallas and the grandson of Martha Mahdak Frnka.

Lodge 133 San Antonio makes a difference with donations Members of Lodge 133, San Antonio met on Sunday, August 20, 2006. It was nice to see so many of our friends at the meeting. Emil Matula reported that Bill Mares was in the TriSun Nursing home. If you wish to write him, his address is 8306 Wurzbach, Room 2, San Antonio, Texas 78229. Grace Rohan reported that Ofie Popp was in the Incarnate Word Assisted Living, not the nursing home. Viola Kurtz informed members that Victor Miculka was recuperating from the shingles. Vicki Popp reported that her mother, Evelyn Popp, was still in Eden Nursing Home, but she was doing better. Please keep all of our sick members in your thoughts and prayers.

President Popp read a letter from the SPJST Home Office thanking the members for the $100 donation to the SPJST Scholarship fund-raiser.

Vice President Reese congratulated Emil and Grace Rohan on their 65th wedding anniversary. A gift card was presented to them. She also reported that Tom and Willie Mae Cole were celebrating 42 years together.

Anxious to make a difference in the community, the members approved several donations. Emil Matula made a motion, seconded by Grace Rohan, to donate $100 to the Comanche Park Nutrition Center to help fund lunches for those who cannot afford them.

Louis Jasek made a motion, seconded

by Grace Rohan, to donate $100 to the Czech Heritage Society. Irene Jasek suggested that we also make a donation to Scoop, an organization that provides transportation to hospitals and doctors for the elderly. Evelyn Matula made a motion, seconded by Doris Moczygemba, to donate $100 to this cause.

Members celebrating August birthdays included Valerie Popp, Kelsey Reese, Emil Matula, III, George Valenta, Joseph Matula, and Margaret Schauffele.

New Members Members voted unanimously to accept as new members of Lodge 177, Academy, Noah Ryan Zajicek and Norma Lee Lowery. Welcome to our lodge! Please come visit us soon.

Kathy reported that our lodge is now at the bronze level, and we expect more new members in the near future. Yeah!

Old Business The Audit Committee (Louis Driska, chairperson, Bernice Hutka, and Shirley McCrea) reported that, with only two minor discrepancies, the books were great and that everyone had done an outstanding job.

Way to go!

New Business Sister Kathy announced that September 17 is the District Two Fall Meeting and Fun Day at Lodge 29, Taylor. Lots of fun activities are planned, including square dancing, horseshoe tournaments, and other games. There will be a short business meeting at 2 p.m. Dinner will be served about 6 p.m. and will cost only $2 a plate. What a deal!

FAC Report FAC Bill Hutka reported that the social at Yank Sing Chinese Buffet was a success and enjoyed by all who attended. He announced that October is Czech Heritage Month and that there will be a special time at the State Fair designated to celebrate this. Grandparents Day is the first Sunday after Labor Day. We have many Lodge 177 members who are grandparents and want to wish each one a Happy Grandparents Day. August is loaded with birthdays.

Louis Driska, Linda Johnson, Linda Wagner, Helen Bland, Shirley McCrea, and Joanne Hutka all have August birthdays. Happy birthday to each and every one of you.

Lodge 155, Austin welcomes new member Lodge 155, Austin welcomes new member, Christina Diane Williams. Christina is the daughter of Quinner and Janet Hejl Williams of Austin. She was born January 18, 2006, and weighed eight pounds, 12 ounces and was 20 inches long.

She is the granddaughter of John Bryce and LaVerne Hejl of Austin and Merle Williams of Austin and the late Quinner Williams. Her aunt is Diane Hejl.

Her family is very blessed to have this little girl in their lives.

Ennis Sewing Circle The Ennis Sewing Circle met on August 10, 2006, with 12 members present and two guests, Jerry Zmolek and Robert Cunningham.

President Sadie Kubin called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all.

Vlasta Laznovsky read the minutes, and Lil Kosarek gave the treasurer’s report. Both were approved as read.

Dorothy Prachyl read a thank you from Ella Mae Zmolek for her card and money gift she received. A thank you was received from Mildred Krajca for us remembering her and

VĚSTNÍK wishing her well. She hopes to see us soon.

Dorothy Prachyl announced our August birthday celebrants— Dorothy Kudrna, Frances Vinkler, and Anne Zvolanek for Eleanora Pelzel who became ill and had to go home. She’s all right now. Several have called to check on her.

Lil Kosarek thanked everyone for returning the little squares she handed out for everyone to sew. She was missing one set of squares. If someone has them and did not make our meeting, please try to bring them in September.

We were happy to see Betty Landsfeld. She talked about the beautiful big Liska-Tolston wedding she attended in Ennis. It really sounded like a big one.

Lil Kosarek brought her Sokol Slet Czech Republic pictures for everyone to look at. They had a wonderful time.

Thank you to Bessie Laznovsky and Dorothy Prachyl for donating tea cups. We truly have great sister members. They keep us stocked with all our needs.

Thank you to our quilters this month: Geraldine Zhanel, Bessie Laznovsky, Dorothy Prachyl, Eleanora Pelzel, and myself. We do need more quilters. Hopefully, it will be cooler in September and more quilters will come. We will be quilting for Eleanora Pelzel.

Dorothy Kudrna did not make our meeting, but did stop by with her daughter and granddaughter for a few minutes. She brought us a big, delicious, chocolate cake that was enjoyed by all.

It was good to see Ella Mae Zmolek who has been absent for several months. We are glad she’s doing all right.

I have talked with Elizabeth Machovsky. She’s feeling better, getting stronger, and hopes to join us soon. Take care, Elizabeth. We miss you. We miss all our members who haven’t felt well enough to attend.

Maybe when it gets cooler you will feel like attending our meetings.

We had a delicious lunch as always. Thank you to Sadie Kubin for getting the plates, silverware, tea, and food ready, and thank you to Sylvia, Vlasta, and Betty Landsfeld for cleaning up.

The door prize was brought by Eleanora Pelzel and won by Geraldine Zhanel. We had our little gift exchange — always fun.

Other News One of our guests, Robert Cunningham, husband to Esther Cunningham, celebrated his 75th birthday on Sunday, August 6. They had a house full of children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren— enjoyed by all. Esther and Robert attended a memorial service on August 8 for Esther’s cousin’s husband, Robert Wingate, who died in Lake Jackson, Texas. Esther will be having dental work done. No trip has been planned for now. Hope all goes well with your dental work.

My grandchildren, Calleigh and

Tanner, have started back to school.

So far, they are doing good. When I pick up Calleigh, she has been very excited, chattering all the way home.

They have to wear uniforms this year.

She doesn’t seem to mind. I must say, all the children coming out of the school really looked great.

Resolution of Sympathy

In Memoriam

We, the members of the Resoultion Committee of Lodge Hvezda Texasu No. 47, Seaton, Texas, on behalf of our membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed sister, IRMA HRUSKA KLINKOVSKY. A loving wife, mother, and grandma was called to her eternal home on August 17, 2006, after a long, hardfought illness.

She was born on January 22, 1928, in Red Ranger, Texas, to the late Steve and Marie Hruska.

Irma was employed in Temple, Texas, at King’s Daughters Irma Klinkovsky Hospital for 12 years and at SPJST Home Office for 30 years, where she retired. She loved working in the yard and in her flower garden. She loved her husband, her family, and the Lord.

Irma’s pride and joy were her two grandchildren, Frank, III and Kelli; she loved spending time with them and telling stories. All of her life she was a member and attended Seaton Brethren Church. She was also a lifetime member of SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton.

Irma Hruska and her beloved husband, Frank Klinkovsky, were married on June 24, 1951, at Seaton Brethren Church. She graduated from Rogers High School and attended the Hieronymus Business School.

Mr. Hanzlicek was born on November 15, 1931, in the Cottonwood community to John and Hattie (Neckar) Hanzlicek. He also lived in Penelope from 1947 until 1954, at which time he left home to serve his country in the Army. On July 13, 1953, he was united in marriage to Leona Sulak in Abbott. They had made their home in West for the past 50 years.

Mr. Hanzlicek retired from General Tire and Rubber Co. after 30 years. He then worked as West Rest Haven in the maintenance department for the past 19 years. He was an Army veteran, having served from 1954 until 1956 with a tour of duty in Munich, Germany. He was a member of St. Mary’s Church of the Assumption, VFW Post 4819, and SPJST Lodge 54, West.

George loved his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

He was never happier than when he had a house full of family unless it was when he was dancing to “The Mountain Valley Waltz” with his beloved Leona, his dance partner for 57 years. He also enjoyed watching his grandchildren participate in various sports, playing dominoes, and fishing in Penelope.

Mr. Hanzlicek was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Johnny, Herman, and Bennie Hanzlicek; and sister Mary Johnson.

Mr. Hanzlicek is survived by his loving wife, Leona; son, George J. “Boogie” Hanzlicek, Jr. and wife Carolyn of West; daughters, Debbie Debbendener and husband Dennis of West and Janice Glatter and husband Donnie of Comanche; brothers, Edwin Hanzlicek and wife Eula Mae, and Leo Hanzlicek, all of Penelope; sisters, Helen Cepak and husband Daniel of Bellmead, Estelle Marek of West and Hattie Kadlubar and husband Bernard of Lake Charles, Louisiana; brother-in-law Al Johnson of Fort Worth; grandchildren, Stephen Glatter and wife Shannon, Justin Glatter, Heath and Heather Hanzlicek, and Crystal, Karen and Jeff Debbendener; great-grandchildren, Tyler Glatter and Baylee Hooper; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Active pallbearers were his grandsons Stephen Glatter, Justin Glatter, Jeff Debbendener, and Heath Hanzlicek, and nephews Johnny Hanzlicek and Edwin Sulak.

Honorary pallbearers were the Board of Directors of West Rest Haven and all staff and residents and members

of VFW Post 4819.

Memorials may be made to St. Mary’s Parish Center. Kotch Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

FERTSCH of San Antonio, Texas, who died on Saturday, August 5, 2006, at the age of 89 years. He was born October 20, 1916, in Hallettsville to the late Emil and Ida Stratmann Fertsch.

Survivors include wife Gladys Schitzkus Fertsch; daughter Betty Gail Fertsch of Abilene; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild.

She was born on March 28, 1911, to John and Mary Bitala Kalcak. On June 3, 1929, she married Jim L. Kahanek. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America and Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Hallettsville.

Survivors include son Jesse Kahanek of Hallettsville; daughters, Doloris Leopold of Hallettsville and Marie Michalec of Houston; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband in February, 1956; parents; sons, Jimmie Kahanek and one at infancy; sisters, Annie Schneider, Agnes Matejek, and Mathilda Waligura; and half-brother Jim Bitala.

She was a member of the Women’s Group of the ELCA, Czech Heritage Society, SPJST, and Zion Lutheran Church of Sublime.

Rose Marie’s life was rich and full.

She loved nature, especially flowers and working in her yard. She liked to travel, shop, visit with her friends, and listen to a good polka. She enjoyed reading recipes and cooking for her loved ones, neighbors, and friends. But the greatest joy in her life was her granddaughters.

Rose is survived by son Robert D. Kloppenburg and wife Jackie of Spring; and grandchildren, Megan Culpepper and husband Jason of Cypress, Sara Klppenburg of Dallas, and Emily Kloppenburg of College Station.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Emil and Tracy Martisek Trlica.

Expression of Sympathy We, the officers and members of SPJST Lodge 15, Buckholts, express our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed member, SIDONIA SVOBODA. Services for Sidonia Svoboda, known by many as “Auntie Red,” age 90, of Buckholts were held at 3 p.m. on Thursday, August 10, 2006, at Marek-Burns-Laywell Funeral Home in Cameron with the Reverend John Kueker officiating. Burial was in the Corinth Cemetery.

She passed away Monday, August 7 in a Cameron nursing facility.

Mrs. Svoboda was born in Bryant Station to Frank and Louise (Jurca) Zajicek. She was a homemaker. She married Edward A. Svoboda.

Her husband preceded her in death.

She was a very active member of the SPJST Lodge 15, Buckholts. She served as financial secretary for more than 25 years.

Survivors are brothers, Rudolph Zajicek and Edwin Zajicek, both of Buckholts, Ben Zajicek of Cameron, Frank Zajicek of San Antonio, and Woodrow Zajicek of Lindale; and sisters, Leona Turner of Kerrville and Carol Jean Baggerly of Waxahachie.

Resolution of Sympathy We, the members of the Resolution Committee of Lodge Slavonic Linden No. 66, Waco, Texas, on behalf of our membership, wish to express our deepest and sincere sympathy to the family of our departed sister, DOROTHY MAE (MATUS) REJCEK, of Abbott, who died Saturday, July 29, 2006, at the age of 67.

Rosary and mass of Christian burial was celebrated Tuesday, August 1 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Abbott with Monsignors Henry Petter and Frank Miller, and Reverend Ed Karasek, as co-celebrants. Burial followed at Fatima Cemetery.

Sister Dorothy was born in West on September 26, 1938, to Otto Joe and Louise (Sykora) Matus. She

attended Mount Calm and LaVega Elementary Schools and graduated from Reicher Catholic High School in 1957. On April 19, 1958, she married Willie John Rejcek. He preceded her in death July, 2004. She worked as librarian for the Abbott Independent School for 15 years, was a rural route carrier for 18 years, worked for Sears, and was a candy striper for the old Providence Hospital. She was also a member of Catholic Daughters of America; KJZT Society No. 11, St. Ludmila; Immaculate Heart of Mary Church; and Altar Society. She was an SPJST member since August, 1955, and received her 50-year pin last year.

Sister Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband; parents; and sister Margie in 2004.

Survivors include sons, Larry of Houston and Laddy and wife Melody of Palmer; daughters, Deborah White and husband Bryan of Afton, Christine Hanaway and husband Robert of Abbott, and Dolores Rejcek of West; sisters, Mary Koenzig and husband Jerry of Killeen and Hattie Macha and husband Dennis of Burleson; grandchildren; and many godchildren, nieces, nephews, and friends.

Youth Letters Section State Youth Director: Christmas ornament contest time Dear Youth Leaders, This summer included a whirlwind of SPJST youth activities. I am happy to report that everything went smoothly. First, thank you to all of you who helped with our 2006 SPJST State Youth Achievement Day on August 5 at the Mayborn Convention Center here in Temple. You made it happen.

Also, thank you to all of you who helped with our summer camps this year. Camp may only be a couple of days out of the year, but for some of our young people, those days may be some of the most important and memorable days of their lives. Youth leaders, please know the positive impact that you make on the lives of your youth club members. Through your words and actions, you are touching lives and helping our young people make it through a very challenging time in life.

First Quarter Reports and Club Rosters Due September 15 Your quarterly reports and youth club rosters are due on September 15.

Your youth club receives $2 for each member who attends the monthly youth club meetings. It will be necessary for your youth club to post an average quarterly youth club attendance of at least five youth club members and turn in your youth club’s roster in order to continue receiving your quarterly funds.

Grandparents Day was the idea of Marian McQuade of Fayette County, West Virginia, who hoped that such an observance might persuade grandchildren to tap the wisdom and heritage of their grandparents. The first presidential proclamation was issued in 1978, with one issued each year since, designating the first Sunday after Labor Day as National Grandparents Day. This year, Grandparents Day is on Sunday, September 10.

VĚSTNÍK and Senate Resolution 1023 were passed designating the last full week in October as Czech Heritage Week in Texas. That declaration was expanded in 1999, when the 76th Legislature of Texas passed a resolution signed by Governor George W. Bush declaring that the month of October annually be observed as Czech Heritage Month in Texas to commemorate the contributions of Czech culture to the State.

Observe Make a Difference Day Saturday, October 28 Something else for your youth club to think about in September: Make A Difference Day in October.

Make a Difference Day is the most encompassing national day of helping others - a celebration of neighbors helping neighbors. Everyone can participate. Created by USA Weekend Magazine, Make A Difference Day is an annual event that takes place on the fourth Saturday of every October.

The next event is Saturday, October 28. And, the best thing is that anyone and everyone can participate. Young and old, individuals and groups can carry out a volunteer project that helps others. It might be a big project like collecting truckloads of clothing for the homeless, or as personal as spending an afternoon helping an elderly neighbor or relative. Texas Fraternal Congress Youth Contest The Texas Fraternal Congress Youth Section is sponsoring several contests this year for all youth who are members of a Texas fraternal organization. All youth are invited to write an essay on the topic: “Patriotism is . . . ” The photography contest theme is “Flags Across Texas.” The art contest theme is “Red, White and Blue.” All SPJST members, ages six to 18, are invited and encouraged to enter the contest. Complete contest guidelines have been mailed to lodge youth club leaders. I want to see our SPJST youth make a good showing when the Texas Fraternal Congress meets October 14 and 15 in Austin.

Youngsters who are interested in participating in the contest and who do not belong to a youth club are encouraged to contact the office of the State Youth Director for complete details.

SPJST Scholarships and Leadership Grants Encourage all high school seniors in your lodge to apply for the SPJST General Scholarship and SPJST

Leadership Grant. Active youth club members are strongly encouraged to apply for both scholarships. College undergraduates who have not received an SPJST Scholarship are also encouraged to apply.

Eyeglasses and Hearing Aid Donations Please keep those old eyeglasses and hearing aid donations coming in.

This is an ongoing collection effort that we have been doing for some time now. Thanks to your efforts, we have already helped many people through this program. The actual program is being run through the Houston Eyeglass Center and the University of Houston. The reconditioned eyeware is redistributed throughout the United States and the world and the repairable cell phones are given to various care shelters throughout the county. I am planning to visit the Center in the coming weeks and will provide you with an update on the good work it does.

Your Ideas on Improving Our Youth Program The District Youth Counselors will meet on Saturday, October 28 to discuss any improvements that might need to be made to our current youth program. If you have anything that you might like to be discussed, please contact your DYC so that they can bring your idea up at the meeting.

District Two youth: fun fall activities planned Dear Members, What a busy, busy summer. There is still a lot of fun and adventure planned in the next few months, and I hope all youth will be a part of it.

District Two Camp Camp was great. I must admit I was a little uptight with Forest Glen being a new camp for us. Having been to Val Verde since I was a child and continuing on for so many years, I was a little worried we would all get homesick for Camp Val Verde. Of course, my main concern was how our youth would like it. Well, prayers were answered. Everyone seemed to have a great time. When the campers were asked to write down which camp they liked better, it was straight up 50/50. We had a lot of new campers, so this was the first SPJST camping experience for them. Thanks so much to all of you who chaperoned. Camp would not be possible without you. I am meeting with the personnel of Camp Hope (formerly Camp Val Verde) next week to see what is in store for next year. My assistants and I are also in the process of checking out a new camp near Columbus. Due to my vacation schedule next year, I will be checking on the dates of Friday, July 6 through Monday, July 9, 2007. As soon as I have the definite dates, place, and time, I will let you know so everyone can make vacation plans. I am hoping with this much advance notice, everyone can make arrangements.

District Two YAD District YAD was also very successful. I was so excited to see so many youth participating! What talent of all sorts we have in District Two. Way to go!

Fiesta Texas Trip Fiesta Texas was a lot of fun. More than 100 youth and adults attended.

Many stated it was fun to go somewhere different this year, but all in all, Six Flags in Arlington was voted No. 1.

State YAD District Two was very successful at State YAD. Congratulations to all!

Beseda Dancers Our District Two Beseda Dancers are still fired up. What a great performance at District Two and State YADs! They have several more appearances to make—the Kolache Festival in Caldwell, The Park Fundraiser in Rogers, the 100th anniversary of the Seaton Brethren Church, and the District Two Fall Meeting.

We have also been asked to dance at the State Fair in Dallas. We met last week to form a new group. We are still in need of a boy and girl for the junior group. Of course, a girl can dance a boy’s part. Please encourage your youth to join us. I am in hopes we can also get more teens involved.

We have been having a great time.

for rules. There will also be a Christmas ornament contest for adults. Please encourage parents and other adults to participate. There will also be a costume contest. The theme this year is Hawaiian. Please dress appropriately and possibly win a prize. Registration is from 1 to 2 p.m.

Our District Two King Kyle Vanecek of Lodge 29, Taylor and Queen Amber Penn of Lodge 24, Cyclone will present their winning speeches.

Our beseda circles will also perform.

The youth will also sponsor a silent auction to help defray costs of our district lock-in the fall. Parents, please to bring an item of $10 or more value or ask around town for donations. In the past, several youth clubs have also donated an item. We will welcome that again. There will be a spinning wheel and cake walk for the adults.

We will have a fish pond and a youth walk which will be for the youth only.

We will purchase some fun prizes. I encourage all youth to participate in all aspects of this fun day.

Core Challenge—September 23 On Saturday, September 23, District Two will sponsor Core Challenge in Temple at Lion’s Park.

State Youth Director John brought a few of the challenges out to camp, and they were great. The kids loved it!

Registration is from 8 to 9 a.m., and activities begin at 9:30 a.m. There will be a $2 entry fee. The Core Challenge is open to the public. We welcome all youth members, friends, and anyone between the ages of five to high school senior. We will be putting out flyers in the smaller school districts around Temple. We do need a parent’s signature. If you have youth coming without a parent, please let me know, and I can email the form.

I am hoping we will have a very large turnout. I will need a lot of volunteers to help with the measuring and scoring. Any adult volunteers would be greatly appreciated. I ask that all workers arrive at 7:30 a.m. As in April, when it was originally scheduled, I will have my cell phone (254) 718-1606 in case of rain, since District Two activities always seem to bring rain. Let’s hope we get that rain soon and before September 23.

District Two beseda mom encourages participation Calling All District Two Youth Club Members: We are currently trying to add another circle (or circles) to our wonderful District Two Beseda Dance Group. I’m sure all of you remember our current junior and senior dance groups performing at District Two and State Youth Achievement Day. Weren’t they wonderful, and they looked great, too!

If you are interested or just have questions, please join us at our next rehearsals at Lodge 47, Seaton Star Hall on Tuesday, September 5 and Tuesday, September 19 at 5:45 p.m.

The Seaton Youth Club will be having its monthly meeting following the September 5 rehearsal at 7 p.m. So stay for the meeting and rack up those merit points!

We would love for you to come to the rehearsal to find out what the District Two Beseda Dance group is all about. Our kids will be performing at the Kolache Festival, the State Fair of Texas, the District Two Fall Meeting, and many other events.

This is a great opportunity for you to be involved in something fun and rewarding. We only have rehearsals twice a month, and we will only commit to performing if it agrees with everyone’s schedule. I promise — you are not too busy to come join this wonderful group! We will work around your schedule. We can even carpool, if necessary. We are just so proud of the kids we have now that we want everyone to have the opportunity to have as much fun. Don’t miss out because you think you are too busy. The district helps purchase the costumes, and we have fund-raisers to help raise money for traveling costs and other expenses so you are not out any money to have all this fun.

District Five youth encouraged to participate in fall meeting Dear Members, Don’t forget that our District Five Fall Meeting is coming up soon. It is Saturday, September 16 at Lodge 196, Houston-West in Cypress, Texas.

This is the meeting to which everyone brings a covered dish, and the district provides the meat.

We will have our annual challenge day as well, and Lodge 88, Houston will be hosting it since they won last year. Please tell your children to bring an extra set of clothes and towel since some activities may be messy.

We will have registration for the Christmas ornament contest from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. There will be no exceptions for late entries. The rules are located in the rule book.

Remember to remind your kids that they may not use any kits.

Lodge 88, Houston will have the fish pond booth that day, and Lodge 172, Pasadena will have the lollipop tree. Please think of a booth for your lodge to have so the kids will have a good time.

Dear Vestnik Readers, In July, we had our annual family fun day. There were a few members present who received their 50-year pins. They included Ms. Ella Orsak, Mr. Rayfield Slovacek, Mr. Oscar Slovacek, Ms. Mary Junek, and Ms. Mary Pemberton.

Our annual barbecue was well attended, and I had the opportunity to help in the serving line, alongside other youth club members, Jordan Hejl, John Wheeler, and Ms. Loree Lewis.

Lodge 25, Ennis youth club member wins trophy at State YAD Dear Vestnik Readers, What I remember at State YAD was that I got an oversized trophy in my junior group talent. The skit was “The Reason Why Our Kids are Ugly.” We got third place! I ate CiCi’s pizza. I painted a rock. I gave it pink hair, two antennae, and a little bitty green nose with googly eyes for the Special Category contest.

Grandma and I sat next to each other in the car on the trip. One of the best things that I enjoyed doing with Grandma was eating kolaches with her. I even ate all the jelly out of her kolache when she wasn’t looking! I love you, Grandma!

Lodge 9, Snook youth learn to make noodles Dear Vestnik Readers, This summer was one of the busiest times for youth club members. As a new school year begins, we start preparing for fall activities.

On September 9, 2006, youth club members will be participating at the annual Kolache Festival Bake Show.

To practice up, members spent the day baking kolaches for our annual country store which was held on Sunday, August 27. The youth club would like to thank Ms. Lydia Faust

and Ms. Orsak for their guidance, and a big thanks to everyone who helped to support our club by purchasing our items and raffle tickets. Our sale was a great success. Not only did we bake kolaches, we also for the first time made homemade noodles. This demo was led by Ms. Ann Schoeneman and Lydia Faust. I would like to thank each of these ladies for helping us and giving us a little history behind making the noodles.

Our next meeting is September 6 at 6:30 p.m. Hope to see everyone there.

Let’s get ready for school and talk about germs.

Some kids may think that germs are bugs or cooties or other gross stuff.

Actually, germs are tiny organisms, or living things, that can cause disease.

Germs are so small and sneaky that they creep into our bodies without being noticed. In fact, germs are so tiny that you need to use a microscope to see them. When they get in our bodies, we don’t know what hit us until we have symptoms that say we've been attacked!

What Types of Germs Are There?

Germs are found all over the world, in all kinds of places. There are four major types of germs: bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa. They can invade plants, animals, and people, and sometimes they make us sick.

Bacteria are tiny, one-cell creatures that get nutrients from their environments in order to live. In some cases that environment is a human body. Bacteria can reproduce outside of the body or within the body as they cause infections.

Some infections bacteria cause include sore throats (tonsillitis or strep throat), ear infections, cavities, and pneumonia.

How do doctors figure out what germs are doing? They take a closer look. By looking at samples of blood and other fluids under a microscope or sending these samples to a laboratory for more tests, doctors can tell which germs are living in your body and how they are making you sick.

How Can You Protect Yourself From Germs?

Most germs are spread through the air in sneezes, coughs, or even breaths.

Germs can also spread in sweat, saliva, and blood. Some pass from person to person by touching something that is contaminated, like shaking hands with someone who has a cold and then touching your own nose. So the best way to protect yourself from germs is to steer clear of the things that can spread them: Cover your nose and mouth when you sneeze and cover your mouth when you cough to keep from spreading germs.

Remember the two words germs fear — soap and water. Washing your hands well and often is the best way to beat these tiny warriors. Wash your hands every time you cough or sneeze, before you eat or prepare foods, after you use the bathroom, after you touch animals and pets, after you play outside, and after you visit a sick relative or friend.

Viruses need to be inside living cells to grow and reproduce. Most viruses can't survive very long if they're not inside a living thing like a plant, animal, or person. Whatever a virus lives in is called its host. When viruses get inside people's bodies, they can spread and make people sick. Viruses cause chickenpox, measles, flu, and many other diseases. Because some viruses can live for a while on something like a doorknob or countertop, be sure to wash your hands regularly!

Lodge 24, Cyclone Lodge 30, Taiton Youth Club meets youth: thanks for at State YAD a great State YAD Dear Readers, Our last Lodge 24, Cyclone Youth Club meeting was on August 5, 2006, at the Mayborn Center during a break at State YAD. At the meeting, we did our Grandparents Day craft and discussed upcoming events, such as the next youth meeting, which will be held September 10 at the KOA Pool near Belton.

Also, mark your calendar for District Two Fall Meeting September 17 and District Two Core Challenge at Lions Park September 23. October 1 Youth Meeting will be held at the Miller Springs Hiking Trail. Hope to see you at all these events!

Dear Věstník Readers, State YAD was held on August 5, 2006, at the Mayborn Convention Center in Temple, Texas. The day started with registration. After registration, we went to Special Category where we had to decorate a rock.

After Special Category was over, we took beseda pictures. All the beseda performers did an excellent job. The talent and royalty competitions were very good. I watched my sisters in the royalty competition, and I was so proud of them. The day concluded with the awards ceremony. I was so excited when our senior group talent won first place. I also got to meet Miss Texas 2006 and my SPJST friends from around the state.

Lodge 24, Cyclone youth enjoys Lodge 84, Dallas special category crowns new queen Dear Readers, August 6 was the SPJST State YAD in Temple. Congratulations to the youth who participated. The Special Category was really fun this year — there were a lot of creative rocks. There were hundreds of craft entries, along with talent competition, beseda dancers, and royalty contestants. Thanks to everyone who took part in this big day. I had fun, and I hope we can have another great YAD next summer!

Dear Readers, The 50th Anniversary Princess Ball for SPJST Lodge 84, Dallas was a huge success. It was held on Saturday, August 19, and my whole family went to help celebrate this special occasion.

Cayla Cloutman was crowned the new lodge queen for 2006 - 2007. I think she is a third generation queen.

Cayla’s grandmother Justine Yeager and Cayla’s mother Tara Andreason Cloutman were both queens in the lodge, I believe. There was a great turnout to enjoy the buffet dinner and fellowship plus the music of Czech and Then Some. I had so much fun dancing.

The monthly meeting of the youth

club was on Monday, August 21, and I’ll have more news to report on it later.

Lodge 84, Dallas youth attends Princess Ball with family Dear Readers, On Saturday, August 19, my family and I attended the 50th Anniversary of the Lodge 84, Dallas Princess Ball.

The celebration included a buffet supper and dancing to the music of Czech and Then Some. I had a lot of fun dancing the Cotton-Eyed Joe and doing a little two-stepping with my mother.

Cayla Cloutman was crowned our new queen for 2006 - 2007. She was very pretty in her dress and crown.

We have been friends a long time. I am glad that she is representing Lodge 84.

The youth club’s monthly meeting was held on Monday, August 21. I will let you know how it goes later.

Lodge 84, Dallas youth share something special Dear Readers, On Monday, August 21, Lodge 84, Dallas Youth Club members got together for their monthly meeting.

After the meeting was brought to order and the Pledge of Allegiance recited, we discussed old and new business. New business included Czechfest on September 17 and National Czech Heritage Day on October 8. More news on these two exciting events to come shortly.

The committees gave their reports.

Then, we all shared our “something special” item that we brought. I brought a commemorative coin I got at Texas Motor Speedway when I went to the races last spring.

After the meeting was adjourned, we made a Grandparents Day craft and ate snacks.

Dear Readers, The Sunday, August 20, 2006, meeting of SPJST Lodge 154, Fort Worth Youth Club was called to order at 5 p.m. by Emily Humphreys.

Sophie Milan led the Pledge of Allegiance and the SPJST Youth Club Motto. Members remained standing for a moment of silent prayer.

The register was read. Present were 14 members, five guests, and 16 adults. Guests were Connor Mason, Lindsey McCavley, Kendal Dunlap, and Reid Jones.

The minutes were read and approved.

Fund-raising activities include planning a dance at the lodge and selling nachos at the Halloween party.

This month’s social was a swimming party at Talia Milan’s house on August 20 at 3 p.m.

The craft for the month was making cards for Anna Johnson of Lodge 154, Jerry Zabojnik (get well), and Nurse Christy from camp.

Our youth leader, Sheri Humphreys, reported that we will have a membership drive at the September meeting. We will invite Miss Bessie to the meeting.

Youth members enjoyed having chips and sodas for refreshments.

Refreshments were served by Lesli Milan.

After the meeting, we swam.

Members with birthdays are Dylan, Appa, and guest Connor Mason.

The next youth club meeting is September 17 at 4 p.m. at Emily Humphrey’s house for a pizza social and scavenger hunt.

Dear Readers, Youth members of our lodge traveled to Temple to attend State YAD. We all participated in the Special Category competition, which involved being creative with a rock, pipe cleaners, paint, glue, and our imagination. We got to look at the final results of all the participants, and there were some really neat ideas.

We watched the talent competitions and the royalty competition. We enjoyed the video on camp and looked for ourselves in all the pictures.

Our next meeting will be August 27, and it will be an adult and youth group meeting.

Lodge 185 New Braunfels Youth Club creates crafts Dear Members, On August 27, 2006, we had our youth and adult meetings for Lodge 185, New Braunfels We met at the Senior Citizen Center in New Braunfels. We started to make plans for the September and October meetings. We may go roller skating as a group outing.

We made God’s eyes for an art project. We had a lot of fun even though we had trouble getting our God’s eyes started.

Lodge 185 New Braunfels youth participates at State YAD Dear Members, August was a pretty exciting month for me. I participated at State YAD. I did a dance and entered Special Category project. The project for Special Category was to deco-

Lodge 202 Jourdanton youth parade through Pleasanton The Lodge 202, Jourdanton Youth Club rode on the SPJST Float in the Cowboy Homecoming Parade in Pleasanton, Texas, on August 19. The youth members gathered around District Seven Duke Devan Vasquez and Duchess Liliana Wiederhold, both of Lodge 202. The float won the First Place Out-of-Town Commercial plaque. A special thanks to Vestnik Editor Melanie Zavodny and David Nauert for bringing the float.

The youth gathered at the Barta’s house after the parade for the club meeting and lunch. After the meeting was brought to order and the Pledge of Allegiance recited, District Seven YAD participants were recognized.

The club also recognized State YAD participants and asked each state winner to report his/her category and award.

Each member was asked to think about possible fund-raising events to generate cash for future outings.

Members were reminded to keep collecting eyeglasses, canned drink tabs, cell phones, and box tops.

A committee was formed to identify possible projects for the Make a Difference Day. The club voted to have a fall outing instead of a Halloween party, and a committee was formed to generate ideas.

Members wanted to do the shoe box Christmas gift project for needy children again this year, and the youth leaders agreed to check into this project.

The club members wanted to thank the Poteet ISD for donating the use of their facilities to host District Seven YAD. The members voted to send a thank you and purchase a book to be donated to the school library.

Next Meeting—September 17 The next meeting will be at the Jourdanton Community Center with the adult lodge on September 17. In honor of Czech heritage, the youth club will join the adult lodge for a Czech meal on October 1.

CEFT projednala několik oganisačních bodů Jan Vaculik

Pravidelná čtvrtletní schůze České vzdělavatelské nadace (CEFT) se konala v College Station, Tx. v Kuldusově budově v areálu Texaské A and M university za velmi pěkného a příjemného počasí.

Předseda Sboru ředitelů Clinton Machann přívítal přítomné ředitele a požádal je o přímluvné modlitby za rodinu Rogera Koláře. Nekolik ředitelů nebylo přítomno. Složili jsme přísahu vlajce a republice, kterou představuje.

Zprávu z minulé schůze přečetl James Sassín, který zapisoval průběh schůze za nepřítomného tajemníka Paula Havlinku. Bylo nutno rozřešit důležitý organisační bod pro práci nadace. Může se stát, že někdo chce poslat podstatný příspěvek přímo universitěna založenou katedru české hudby a kultury a podle naší smlouvy s UNT, universita by měla tuto částku použít k rozšíření základu. Přítomní ředitelé nadace, kteří slouží v civilním povolání jako advokáti anebo starají se o veřejné fondy a bankovní účty lidí a organisací, se pak pokusili vysvětlit případné následky, kdy naše nadace vyplatí celou částku pro založení katedry české hudby a kultury na Severotexaské universitě v Dentonou, Tx. Nadace i nadále přijme velké, větší a jiné částky a uloží je k základu stipendia and 400 tisíc dolarů Menší částky mohou být použity pro současnou činnost.

Předseda Clinton Machann podal zprávu o své účasti na světovém kongresu Společnosti věd a umění, který se konal v létě roku 2006 v Českých Budějovicích a ve svém příspěvku

zdůraznil, žé někdy potřebujeme podrobnou výměnu informací mezi universitami a obyčejnými lidmi, aby jedni viděli výsledky své práce přinášet užitek v životech druhých.

Náš tajemník Paul Hlavinka byl také účastníkem kongresu a oznámil, že Clinton Machann byl odměněn společností za vynikající práci v Texasu a na časopisu Kosmas. Kongress byl vcelku úspěšnou akcí. Příští světový kongres se bude konat na Moravské universitě ve Pennsylvanii.

Zbytek peněz pro stipendia pro moravské studenty na Texaské A and M v College Station, Tx. bude použito na podporu a pohodlí Strnadelovy skupiny, která projede Texasem v říjnu roku 2006.

Ředitel Jim Bezděk přednesl návrh plaket, budou rozděleny na diamantovou, zlatou, stříbrnou, bronsovou, pak je kruh cti a příznivci. Universita provede konečné uspořádání jmen na plaketě a vše to, co je potřebné.

Lori Navarová přednesla návrhy na podobu razítka a pečeti naší nadace. Po delší debatě Lori připraví opravenou podobu do příští schůze v říjnu 2006.

Příští schůze nadace se má konat 28. října 2006 v residenci naší ředitelky Clarice Mařík-Snokhousové v deset hodin a 30 minut dopoledne.

Radhost ensemble to perform in Houston On the afternoon of Saturday, September 23, the Harris County

VĚSTNÍK Chapter of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas will host a performance by an ensemble of folk dancers, singers, and musicians from the Czech Republic. There are 24 Czechs in the traveling group. The

event will be held at the Sokol Hall, located at 1314 West Patton Street in Houston.

The audience will be welcomed at 2 p.m., and the performance will begin at 2:30 p.m. and will last

approximately one hour.

Goodwill donations toward travel expenses of the group will be welcomed but are not required. After the performance, the Heritage Society will have a soup tasting event which

Texas Queen Wins Miss Czech-Slovak USA Crown

On August 6, 2006, Sarah Middlebrook of West, Texas, was crowned the 2006 Miss CzechSlovak USA Queen at the 45th Annual Czech Festival Days in Wilber, Nebraska. The Miss Czech-Slovak Queen USA Pageant is a non-profit ethnic pageant founded 20 years ago by John and Lois Fiala of Lincoln, Nebraska, and Doris Ourecky of Wilber, Nebraska. The pageant continues to grow because of the continuing pride, culture and heritage tradition of Czechs, Moravians, Silesians, and Slovaks in the United States. President Ronald Reagan proclaimed Wilber, Nebraska the “Czech Capital of Nebraska” in a Joint Resolution and Proclamation of the Senate and House of Representatives on July 10, 1987, in honor of the large percentage of Czechs that originally came to the United States and settled in Nebraska.

The 2006 pageant hosted 13 contestants from Nebraska, Ohio, Oklahoma, Wisconsin, Missouri, Florida, Iowa, Texas, Kansas, Minnesota, Colorado, South Dakota, and Illinois.

Queen contestants qualify for the USA pageant by first qualifying on the local then the state level.

All contestants must compete in the following categories: personal interview with the judges, on-stage introduction and question session, kroj (Czech costume) modeling, and talent competitions. The Pageant Committee Chairman is MaryElizabeth Lackey of St. Louis, Missouri, and committee members include Doris Ourecky, Sharon Kastanek, Brenda Cerveny, Judy Florian, B.J. Fictum, and Sharon Brozovsky, all of Wilber, Nebraska.

The pageant began on Friday, August 4 as the State Queens arrived at the Historic Wilber Hotel, established in 1895. The Queens enjoyed the Children’s Parade and visited the Wilber Festival sites. On Saturday, the Queens met their Little Czech Sisters who are appointed by the Pageant Committee from Wilber and the surrounding communities. The Queens then participated in personal interviews with the judges. After a brief photo session, the contestants were introduced to the crowd at the downtown bandstand. The Queens were treated to a dignitary luncheon and reception before the parades on both days of the festival. Saturday evening ended with the onstage introduction and the kroj modeling competition. The 2005 Miss Czech-Slovak USA Queen, Anna Grignon of Florida, served as the narrator for the kroj descriptions. Sunday morning, the Queens were treated to a breakfast and Mass at the St. Wencelaus Catholic Church. After church, the Queens visited the residents of the Wilber Care Center. Sunday evening, the pageant concluded with the talent competition and the crowning of the 2006-2007 Miss Czech-Slovak USA Queen. Master of ceremonies for the evening was

The newly crowned Miss Czech-Slovak USA Queen, Sarah Middlebrook of Texas, received many wonderful prizes which include a trip to the Czech Republic, $1,500 cash scholarship, trophy, Bohemian crystal, flowers, $250 cash award, a jeweled crown, and two traveling Fiala Crowns.

First runner-up, Caitlin Smith of Illinois received a $1,000 savings bond, trophy, Bohemian crystal, and flowers.

Second runner-up, Taylor Pflughoeft, received a $500 savings bond, trophy, Bohemian crystal, and flowers.

Sarah Middlebrook also received a one of a kind crystal Empire Building from Prague for winning the Oratory Award and a $500 savings bond for winning the authentic kroj modeling competition. Sarah wore an antique, authentic kroj, on loan to her from the collection of Henrietta Cervenka of West, Texas. Other award winners include Caitlin Smith, talent award; Krista Johanek of Wisconsin, talent award runner-up; Jada Jedlicka of Oklahoma, Miss Congeniality and Americanized Kroj; Ashley Slama of South Dakota, Spirit of the CzechSlovak Heritage Award; and Susanne Bures of Ohio, Sokol award. Sarah’s Little Czech Sister, Sheyenne Kiesel, was named the 2006-2007 Princess.

Judges for the pageant were Elaine Benda of Oklahoma, John Stekly of Platte, South Dakota, and Jaroslav Kurfurst, Deputy Chief of Mission,

Czech Republic Consulate, Washington, D.C. The auditors were Shirley Pecka and Linda Morrissey of Wilber, Nebraska.

Many people traveled from Texas to Nebraska to the queen pageant. They include Sarah’s parents, Ed and Sharon Middlebrook, Lindsay Hill, Texas Pageant Director Kathy Podsednik and husband Larry, Maggie and Ernest Grmela, and Jana Vaculik, all of West; Czech Heritage Society of Texas President Jean Blaha Davis and husband Raymond of Dime Box; McLennan-Hill Czech Heritage Society President Albin Petter and wife Joyce of Waco; Joe and Alice Janecka of Burleson; and Zora Pergl of “The Dumpling Newsletter” from Florida.

Sarah Middlebrook is 18 years old and is currently attending Hill College, where she is starting a dance team this fall. Sarah was crowned the McLennan-Hill Czech-Slovak Queen in January and won the Texas title in April in Hallettsville, Texas. The Czech Heritage Society of Texas sponsors the Miss Texas Czech-Slovak Pageant, which is now in its fourth year. Prior to the Texas pageant being established, T e x a s Queens were sponsored independently to the National Pageant.

Since being crowned in J a n u a r y, Sarah has traveled over 3,300 Miss Czech-Slovak USA miles pro- Sarah Middlebrook with Little moting the Czech Sister Sheyenne Kiesel Czech heritage and cultural awareness at festivals, parades, Czech Heritage Society of Texas Chapter meetings, Czech Youth Day in La Grange, and Chamber of Commerce events in West and Waco.

On May 9, the Texas House of Representatives honored Sarah with House Resolution 505 for her work representing the Czech community in Texas. Sarah is the daughter of Ed and Sharon Middlebrook and granddaughter of Joe and Peggy Hill and the late Bobby and Barbara (Skopik) Middlebrook, all of West. As the USA Czech Queen, Sarah will be traveling to the Czech Republic next summer. She hopes to visit the Czech Embassy in Washington, D.C. and several other states to and judge state Queen pageants.

RadhostWallachian ensemble to perform at State Capitol A talented ensemble of 12 dancers and five musicians will perform at the State of Texas Capitol Rotunda in Austin, Texas, on October 3, 2006, at 12 noon and at the SPJST Lodge 18, Elgin hall at 6:30 p.m. the same day.

The popular group from the Moravian town of Roznov pod Radhostem, Czech Republic, frequently performs on their stage at the Open Air Museum. Dressed in authentic Wallachian kroje, this group is sure to be a crowd pleaser.

The group was founded in 1948 and has participated in international festivals in many countries.

Kolache Bake Show celebrates prized Czech pastry The 22nd annual Kolache Festival and Bake Show will be held on September 9, 2006. The Kolache Bake Show began in 1984, from an idea of the Burleson County Extension Education Association Clubs (known then as the Extension Homemakers) and Texas Cooperative Extension of Burleson County, for promoting the county’s Czech heritage and culture and the ethnic pastry.

VĚSTNÍK The State of Texas Kolache Bake Show has grown into a statewide contest with five divisions that draw contestants from all over the state of Texas. In 2005, there were approximately 250 entries overall. Prizes include ribbons, trophies, and cash awards.

Each division has 11 classes of kolache based on the filling used. The top kolache in each of the 11 classes is awarded a rosette. Grand and reserve champion winners are chosen from the rosette winners for each division.

All grand and reserve champion winners are given a trophy and cash prize.

Also, the grand and reserve champion winners are invited to judge the next year’s entries.

The Kolache Bake Show relies on the support, donations, and hard work of the Burleson County Extension Education Association (E.E.A.) Council and clubs in Snook, Tunis, Lyons, and Caldwell.

Medical terms: helpful to genealogists While reading old diaries, letters, pension records, or death records, genealogists often come upon medical terms which are uncommon today. Early families suffered from Barber’s Itch and Brown Tail Rash.

They experienced Milk Leg, King’s Evil, and Painter’s Colic.

A definition of these ailments may give the family historian a glance into the trials suffered by the family. The genealogists may discover a pattern to a disease afflicting generations.

The following list of early medical terms may assist the genealogist.

On September 11, 2001, a series of terrorist attacks on our nation killed thousands of innocent men, women, and children in a matter of hours.

Five years later, the aftermath of this tragedy remains fresh in the hearts and minds of Americans.

We continue to remember and mourn the victims.
