Editor’s Note Take time to think about them

o many of our troops continue to fight for the freedom that we enjoy everyday here in America. One of my friends just returned to Iraq after a couple weeks at home. It was great to see him and hear about his experience. We complain about the 100-degree weather in Texas - even in shorts, but our troops are in 120-degree weather in full uniform with heavy equipment. There are so many things that we take for granted - like remembering our troops and everything they are going through.

Please think about them and pray for their safety.

Thanks to Margaret Haisler of Lodge 186, Caldwell for sharing an email she received: Their alarm goes off, they hit the snooze and sleep for another 10 minutes.

He stays up for days on end.

They take a warm shower to help them wake up.

He goes days or weeks without running water.

They complain of a “headache,” and call in sick.

He gets shot at as others are hit, and keeps moving forward.

They put on their anti war/don’t support the troops shirt, and go meet up with their friends.

He still fights for their right to wear that shirt.

They make sure their cell phone is in their pocket.

He clutches the cross hanging on his chain next to his dog tags.

They talk trash about their buddies” that aren’t with them.

He knows he may not see some of his buddies again.

They walk down the beach, staring at all the pretty girls.

He walks the streets, searching for insurgents and terrorists.

They complain about how hot it is.

He wears his heavy gear, not daring to take off his helmet to wipe his brow.

They go out to lunch, and complain because the restaurant got their order wrong.

He doesn’t get to eat today.

A maid makes their bed and washes their clothes.

He wears the same things for weeks, but makes sure his weapons are clean.

They’re angry because their class ran five minutes over.

He’s told he will be held over an extra two months.

They call their girlfriend and set a date for tonight.

He waits for the mail to see if there is a letter from home.

They hug and kiss their girlfriend, like they do everyday.

He holds his letter close and smells his love’s perfume.

They roll their eyes as a baby cries.

He gets a letter with pictures of his new child, and wonders if they’ll ever meet.

They criticize their government, and say that war never solves anything.

He sees the innocent tortured and killed by their own people and remembers why he is fighting.

They hear the jokes about the war, and make fun of men like him.

He hears the gunfire, bombs and screams of the wounded.

They are asked to go to the store by their parents. They don’t.

He does exactly what he is told.

They stay at home and watch TV. He takes whatever time he is given to call, write home, sleep, and eat.

They crawl into their soft bed, with down pillows, and get comfortable.

He crawls under a tank for shade and a five-minute nap, only to be woken by gunfire.

They sit there and judge him, saying the world is probably a worse place because of men like him.

If only there were more men like him!

As the summer winds down and my time with the SPJST Youth Club comes to an end, I would like to take a moment to reflect on those experiences that have helped shape me into the person that I am today and how this organization has played a vital role in preparing me for the future.

There are many people who have endlessly supported me through all my involvements within the SPJST, and I would like to thank them for all that they have done. I have been a lifelong SPJST member and active in the youth club for six years with experiences and memories that I will remember forever.

My family has always been a large part of my participation in the SPJST youth club and I have several of those individuals to thank. To start off, I want to thank my grandparents, Dorothy and Eugene Gerlich from Lodge 66, Waco, their parents and grandparents for my Czech ancestry.

Most importantly, I would like to thank my mother, Donna Gerlich Culliton. She is the one who got me involved with SPJST and who supported me through everything. My mother was a very active member in District Three’s Lodge 66 Youth Club and was the very first SPJST State Duchess in 1963. She passed away almost three years ago and, although she is no longer with us, her love and spirit still live on within me and countless others. I know that she is proud of all that I do as she is smiling down from Heaven. My aunt, Kay Gerlich Weeks, has also been a great supporter of everything going on with my family as well as SPJST. She has also been my youth leader the past four years at Lodge 183, Arlington.

Kay has been the motivating force behind almost everything I have done in the youth club, from attending camps and events to preparing for YAD and all of my royalty competitions. I would like to thank my dad, my sisters Natalie and Kimberly, and the Weeks family, Kay, Tom, and my triplet cousins, Katie, Gena, and Tommy for driving me to many of the royalty events this past year and making my youth club experience always more fun and enjoyable.

When I first joined the youth club, we lived in Arlington and would drive south to Waco once a month or more for the meetings and socials. I would like to thank Debbie and the whole Galler family for helping me to realize the purpose of the SPJST and giving me a jump start in all of the SPJST

SPJST Reflections

By 2005-2006 SPJST State King Nicholas Ryan Culliton youth activities.

Ann Pustejovsky, the president of our mother Lodge 183, Arlington and Assistant Youth Leader Debra Daniel have been consistent supporters of our youth club ever since it was organized back in 2002. They have participated in many of the activities and shown pride and gratitude in all of the youth club’s accomplishments. I thank Ann and Debra for all of their hard work and support throughout the years.

I have made many great friendships that are sure to last in the SPJST at the lodges I have attended, Lodge 66, Waco and Lodge 183, Arlington, and also the many people I h a v e become close with in District Three and throughout the state of Texas.

I thank all of you who have made my involvement in the SPJST truly worthwhile.

I would like to thank District Three for allowing me to represent it as King the past two years; it has really been a pleasure.

Much of my appreciation and respect goes out to District Three Youth Counselor Bessie Petr and Assistants Lynda Novak and Diana Engelke, who have lovingly supported me in all my royalty endeavors and have always extended a helping hand no matter what was needed.

The counselors and all of the coordinators at the district and LIT camps deserve much respect for spending their own time going to training meetings and spending long weekends at the camps. I appreciate all of those individuals that have made my camping experiences some of my best SPJST memories.

Just last year, I was given the opportunity to represent the state as 2005-2006 SPJST State King, and the

fun I had at all of the events and parades as well as the many things I learned about my Czech culture during this past year have meant more to me than the title itself. It was a great honor being able to represent this organization through all of the parades and events I attended, including Westfest, the Kolache Festival, the SPJST Home Office Open House, Temple Christmas Parade, the Texas Fraternal Congress, the National Polka Festival in Ennis, and the Belton Fourth of July Parade. It has been a privilege to represent the SPJST as a l e a d e r through these many events, and I express my thanks to anyone and everyone who has played a role in getting me into these parades and appearances and allowing me to take pride in my accomplishment as State King.

Thanks to past Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar and current Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek for their endless support of the youth program. John Hoelscher, our State Youth Director, has done an outstanding job filling the shoes of our previous State Youth Director Melanie Zavodny. It has been great getting to know John through all of the royalty events as he would always be ready for us before and after each parade with the air conditioning in the van cranked up and some ice cold water. His humor always made it even more enjoyable to be around John, and I wish him the best of luck in the future with the SPJST youth clubs.

I want to especially thank Melanie and David for always being there with the awesome red and black Corvettes for us to ride in the various parades.

I would like to thank my duke, Chris Johnson of Lodge 66, Waco, who was always there with me at all of the royalty appearances with a smile on his face. He didn’t mind at all filling in as my duke after district this year when my other duke Tyler Rutt had to withdraw, and I was pleased that he took the offer.

Spending time with Chris was always a great time, and I also thank his mother Brandy and Grandma Dana for getting him to all of the events.

Others who have made the royalty events most enjoyable were SPJST State Queen Rachel Hunter and her Duchess Amanda Jurik. It has been great getting to know them better this year in our role as State Royalty.

Although our college rivalries will be intact when A&M beats Tech this year, the friendship Rachel and I share will last a lifetime. I truly wish Rachel the best of success in her upcoming years at Texas Tech and hope that she may achieve all of her goals and enjoy life to its fullest. I have come to know that Rachel is as beautiful a person on the inside as she is outside. I also want to thank the entire Hunter family for their kindness and friendship over this past year. I appreciate how welcoming they have always been and the respect they all had for me.

As we all know, college can cause a great deal of financial troubles, so I would like to thank the SPJST Scholarship Committee very much for providing me with both the State Royalty and Leadership Grants.

These gracious offers will prove to be very beneficial in the coming weeks as I begin my college education at Texas A&M. I will be moving down to College Station in just a few weeks to begin my college life. I will be majoring in Biomedical Science, and I plan to pursue a doctorate degree in Veterinary Medicine by applying for the vet school at A&M in another four years. Thank you, SPJST, for your help in a promising future.

In closing, all I can say is thank you from the bottom of my heart. SPJST has always been and will always be a part of my life. I only hope that I can make the SPJST as proud of me as I am to be a part of such a wonderful organization. And, if you ever need a good veterinarian in a few years, just look me up!

Lodge Letters Section District Two Fall Meeting September 17 in Taylor Hey, all you District Two members, it is getting to be that time of year again for our fall meeting.

September 17 is the date, and Lodge 29, Taylor is the place. Remember, this is our fun meeting.

There will be spin wheels, cake walk, and lots of other fun things to do.

The District Two officers have not touched base with Taylor yet, but I know they will have a real good meal for us all to enjoy.

Lodge 6 Cottonwood preps for Westfest Hi! Our meeting was called to order on Sunday, August 6, 2006, at 4:30 p.m. by President Brother Milton Peterson. Miss Courtney Halbert led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance, reciting the SPJST Motto afterwards.

There was a moment of silence for all departed members. Sister Georgie Soukup gave a count of 21 members present at this meeting.

Secretary Sister Barbara Jean Hykel was called upon for the reading of the minutes from our last meeting.

They were approved as read. Sister Barbara had a few pieces of correspondence. She read a letter from Brandt Roessler asking us to consider sponsoring him for a trip to the Young Leaders Conference in Washington, D.C., to represent Texas. No action was taken.

Sister Barbara also had a letter from the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center regarding some upcoming events scheduled in La Grange and other places in Texas.

There were thank you notes received for our lodge for donations. They were from Hill County Rural EMS, Operation Uplift regarding the phone cards to our troops, and from TCHCC in La Grange, Texas.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Sister Barbara Hykel gave a report by thanking everyone who helped out in various places at our annual picnic last month. She also mentioned that State Youth Achievement Day was in Temple on Saturday, August 5.

Sister Barbara mentioned that Grandparents Day is September 10 and that Czech Heritage Month is October. She also reminded everyone that Heritage Day at the State Fair in Dallas is October 8 at the African American Museum.

Our treasurer, Sister Peggy Dobecka, was unable to attend this meeting, but she sent her report.

Sister Barbara Hykel gave the treasurer’s report, and it was approved as given.

Brother George Straten, Financial Secretary and Hall Manager, was called upon for his report. He reported two new adults in June and one adult and two juvenile members in July. Sorry, but I failed to get the sales agents for these new members. There were transfers from Lodge 66, Waco — David and Vickey Bartosh and their two sons, John and Michael, from Abbott, Texas. All new members were welcomed into our lodge, and our sales agents were thanked.

Brother George mentioned that our next meeting will be Sunday, September 10 at 2 p.m. As it is Grandparents Day, the youth will furnish our meal. It will be a noon meal before our meeting. Our socials will be on September 1 and 15. The social on September 1 will be a workday for

Westfest, which is September 2 and 3.

Potato peeling will begin at 4 p.m. on September 1 at the hall. Milton Peterson and his boys will be cooking potatoes on Saturday and Sunday for Westfest.

Brother Johnnie Krizan gave our picnic report. He also mentioned that the boats at Westfest will now be $4.

Lodge 29, Taylor welcomes new member Lodge 29, Taylor members Adam and Monica Mehevec along with big brother Dylan proudly announce the birth of Luke Garrett Mehevec, born June 28, 2006.

Luke weighed seven pounds, 15 ounces. His proud grandparents are Anne Mehevec and the late Jerry Mehevec and Albin and Elaine Machu, all of Taylor. Luke became a member of Lodge 29 thanks to his grandpa and Lodge 29 Sales Agent Albin Machu.

VĚSTNÍK Sandwiches will be $3 or $3.50 with kraut. It was reported that Al Soukup attended the Westfest Food Booth Manager’s meeting and reported that the booth will be moved to the grounds on August 26 at 7 a.m.

Our Sunshine Committee Chairman, Sister Jerelene Lenart, was absent from our meeting, but she had nothing to report.

Brother Johnnie Krizan brought up the barbecue cook-off in Meridian that is held each year on the last weekend in August. The lodge voted to sponsor Herbert Brem and Dale

Sembera representing SPJST. Brother Johnnie Krizan, District Three Director, congratulated the Lodge 6 youth on participating at State Youth Achievement Day in Temple. He mentioned Courtney Halbert, Lakn Dieterich, Whitney Dobecka, Traci Dobecka, Julie Tucker, Anna Dulock, Andrew Dulock, and Amelia Peterson.

Brother Johnnie also mentioned that District Three captured the State King and Queen titles, and he congratulated them.

Also, congratulations to Whitney Dobecka on winning the

District Three Merit Point Grant.

In attendance with an August birthday was Kim Seith. Happy birthday to Kim and to all with a birthday this month. Drawings were then held, and the door prize winners were Lydia Dobecka, Georgie Soukup, and Irene Peterson. Congratulations! Lodge 1, Fayetteville Travels to Houston Astros Game Submitted by Sharon Fritsch, FAC On Sunday, July 30, 2006, Lodge 9, Snook and Lodge, 51 Ellinger joined Lodge 1, Fayetteville on a bus trip to Minute Maid Park to watch the Houston Astros and the Rocket - Roger Clemens - battle the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Fifty members of all ages enjoyed

the day trip even though the Astros came up short in the end. The members also had an opportunity to run the bases after the conclusion of the game.

Refreshments and door prizes were plentiful on the bus trip along with movies, great conversations, and fellowship.

This was the second annual Astros trip sponsored by Lodge 1. As tradition continues, a trip will be scheduled again next summer to support the Astros. Any lodges interested in joining this activity, please do not hesitate to contact Lodge 1.

It was especially nice to join lodges

and get to know other SPJST members in the state. It was enjoyable to visit the newly-found friends made at District One Youth Camp. Getting other lodges involved with your lodge activities is an important way to meet new people, share ideas, learn new things, and just unite as SPJST members.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by the members present, and a moment of silence was observed for the sick and departed members. We also offered a special prayer for the recovery of Joyce Kahanek. She served as assistant youth leader for many years.

Secretary Wanda Dorotik called the roll of officers and members. She then read the minutes from the June meeting, and they were approved as read. Treasurer Lisa Bubela then gave the treasurer’s report.

Karen Kaspar, District Six State Field Representative, discussed briefly the status for our lodge incentives.

Youth Leader Lisa Bubela gave a brief report. She told everyone that the youth were working really hard to get ready for District Six YAD. She handed out information on the District Six tour for the youth program and discussed the plans for the day. The tour was scheduled for Saturday, July 29 in Corpus Christi.

She also informed the members that the youth would be traveling to Temple on Saturday, August 5 for State YAD. Under old business, we discussed the upcoming District Six Bowling Tournament. The tournament will be held on Saturday, August 26 at the El Campo Bowling Center. The tournament will be open to all teams of four

who would like to join. Registration is $100 per team. There will be both youth and adult divisions. For information contact Mike Ahlstrom (361) 578-3279 or Karen Kaspar (979) 332-1616.

Tickets will be sold for a drawing to be held on October 8 at the District Six Fall Meeting in El Campo-Hillje.

The motion was seconded and passed. Yvonne then said that she would contact a representative to accept the donation.

The adult meeting was adjourned at 6:50 p.m., and the youth club meeting then followed. After the meetings, we enjoyed a hot dog supper and swimming at the home of Greg and Lisa Bubela.

Lodge 47, Seaton plans September 9 fund-raiser Dear Brothers and Sisters, The regular monthly meeting of Lodge 47, Seaton was held on Sunday, August 6, 2006, at Star Hall at 2 p.m. with the opening by President Edwin Pechal. The flags were brought in by Jerry Pechal and Kyle Hoelscher, and they led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

We remained standing in respect to the memories of Annie Sophie Mikeska and Wanona Sula who both died lately and Joe Fojtasek who also passed away. May these dear departed rest in eternal peace. We express our deepest sympathy to their surviving families in their losses.

There will be a meeting on September 5 at 7 p.m. to set up for the fund-raiser. Tables and chairs are to be moved, and final plans for the event will be completed.

There was a question of the purchase of a copy machine with money that Star Hall has for the use of the members, especially chairpersons.

So there will be pricing and studying to see which is the best and to keep the price right.

The youth club met in the youth room. They had 22 members present, two visitors, and one new member,

Colton Regan. They will welcome any new members. Do you know that the beseda group meets at Star Hall on Thursday to practice the Czech beseda? There is a fund-raiser to furnish the costumes for the children to wear. You would be proud to have your children to be a part of this dance group.

Lodge 80, Holland to discuss rules and regulations changes Lodge 80, Holland will hold the final discussion on proposed rules and regulations changes at the September 2 general meeting.

Following meetings of the Rules and Regulations Committee and the Board of Directors, proposed changes were presented to members at the regular July and August meetings. Changes include the creation of a Scholarship Committee and the deletion of the description of a hall manager.

Questions may be referred to Rita Spinn, Chairperson of the Rules and Regulations Committee. All proposed changes will be voted on at the October 7 meeting.

Lodge 80, Holland reports on August meeting SPJST Lodge 80, Holland President Coleman Benner opened the monthly meeting at 4 p.m. on August 5, 2006. The membership stood for the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence for our departed members. Directors absent were Linda Hill, Ann Latham, Ronnie Horak, and Gracie Schlickeisen.

Paula Weir read the minutes of the July meeting. They were approved as read.

Treasurer Jewel Wolf gave the financial report, and it was accepted as read.

Two new members were voted in by the membership.

Rita Spinn stated the by-laws should be finalized by September and

voted on in October. She reviewed the new lease agreement that will be in line with our new insurance policy.

A motion made by Doni Powell and seconded by Vicki Slye to accept the lease agreement was passed by the membership.

Lodge 80 is having a bake sale today to raise money for scholarships.

Paula Weir asked if Lodge 80 would sponsor a pee-wee football team. Vicki Slye stated they had been advised at an insurance seminar that sponsors of a team could be held liable if one of the players was injured. Rita Spinn suggested Lodge 80 contact SPJST Legal Advisor Drew Popelka. Doni Powell moved, seconded by Rita Spinn, to donate $100 to the pee-wee team.

The hall has been spoken for July 21, 2007, for a wedding.

The ambulance fund-raiser will be September 24.

Frank Pajestka, Jr. asked for Jim and Suzy Wiest and Risa and Victoria Pajestka to be excused from the lodge meeting due to their commitment to State YAD in Temple. The motion

Lodge 230, Midland Back-t0-School Swim Party Saturday, July 29, 2006 • Midland, Texas On July 29, a total of 67 members and guests came and enjoyed our back-to-school swimming party in Midland, Texas.

The weather was hot and muggy— a perfect day to cool off in the pool.

Kids and adults alike had fun horsing around in the pool. Some brought

their own toys, and some just wanted to soak in the cool water.

Special guests were the women and children of the shelter Safe Place, and not a moment went by without any of them saying thank you for including them in our party.

Lodge 172 Pasadena plans flea market President Robert Mayfield called the July 23, 2006, meeting to order at 2 p.m. with the Pledge of Allegiance, a short prayer, and a moment of silence for the departed. Grace was said, and we adjourned for lunch.

During lunch, we had a police officer, Bobby Keen, of Pasadena give a presentation. He talked about identity theft and how easy it is for people to get access to your bank account, credit, or debit card. If you are mailing out a bill with either a check or your card number, be sure to take it to a post office or a UPS drop box.

The meeting reconvened at 3 p.m.

Our dances aren’t doing as well as they should, and I imagine that it’s the same elsewhere.

We have been asked about renting our lodge hall to a church group on a weekly basis (one evening each week). We hope this works out. We sure can use the geedus.

The members also decided to have a fund-raiser activity. We will have another flea market sale later on this year. So if some of you have any items for such a sale, please bring them to the lodge to be stored in the youth room.

Next Meeting—August 27 Our next executive board meeting clean-up workday is August 7, and the regular meeting is on August 27.

Please come to help out—if only for a short while. We do have some dedicated workers in our lodge. If not for them, we would be in dire straits.

She informed the membership about the upcoming Statewide Barbecue Cook-Off on July 14 and 15. Financial Secretary Angeline Stiborek reported that we had 19 new members and four terminations in May and 23 new members and five terminations in June.

Kay Gerlich Weeks gave the youth report. The youth members recently participated in the District Three YAD on June 25 at Lodge 6, Cottonwood. Our lodge was wellrepresented with six first place winners, six second place winners, two third place winners, and 32 honorable mention winners. Special congratulations go to queen contestant Chelsea Reed and her duchess Katelyn Daniel for being the runnersup in the royalty competition.

Upcoming activities include District Three Camp on July 21 to 24 and State YAD in Temple on August 5.

Have fun at district camp and good luck at State YAD. Under new business, Ann Pustejovsky reported that she will be getting a post office box for our mail delivery since some of our mail seems to be disappearing from the

regular box.

Under old business, Kenneth Cepak reported that he would be checking on the inspection for the fire extinguishers.

The members voted to donate to the Big Brothers and Big Sisters Program; and to the youth club so they could rent a 15-passenger van filled with gas to go to camp.

Ann Pustejovsky reported that she had sent out welcome letters to new lodge members inviting them to our various lodge activities. She stressed the importance of our members keeping up-to-date on SPJST news and activities by reading their Vestnik. If there are any members who are not receiving this informative SPJST publication, please let her know so she can ensure that every member of Lodge 183 is on the Vestnik mailing list.

She reminded everyone about Heritage Day at the State Fair of Texas on Sunday, October 8 and our lodge Christmas party on Saturday, December 9. A nice thank you note was read from DYC Bessie Petr for our donation to District Three Camp.

Door prize was won by Kay Gerlich Weeks.

There will be no Family Social Night in July.

Our next lodge meeting will be on Monday, August 14 at 7 p.m. Our Member Appreciation Dinner is scheduled for Friday, August 25 at the hall. Ann will check on having Buck ’n Loons cater the meal.

Lodge 200 Bruceville-Eddy welcomes visitors The August, 2006, meeting of Lodge 200, Bruceville-Eddy was held on the 2nd. We were very happy to welcome three visitors — District Two Director Bobby Wuensche and wife, Ruth Ann, and State FAC Chester Jenke. We always look forward to visits from Director Wuensche and Ruth Ann, and we were pleased to have State FAC Jenke visit us for the first time.

The meeting was called to order by President Alan Trigg with the Pledge of Allegiance and usual formalities.

Secretary-Treasurer Nancy Devinney read the minutes of our last meeting, followed by her treasurer’s report.

Both were approved as presented.

Vice President/FAC Dan Ferguson gave a detailed report on upcoming activities, and he asked those present for a list of fraternal acts and hours devoted to fraternal activities.

State FAC Jenke made a very informative presentation and encouraged the lodge members to support the youth in light of upcoming youth events. He informed us of changes in requirements for lodges in achieving their quotas and emphasized the need to also reach our quota of fraternal activities early on instead of waiting till the year’s end.

Director Wuensche presented topics of information and spoke of the need for more sales agents in our

lodge and in the district. He encouraged us to seek out additional sales agents. Ruth Ann Wuensche, who serves as District Two Treasurer, invited all to the District Two Fun Day at SPJST Lodge 29, Taylor. The fun day will begin at 2 p.m. on September 17 and includes a meal at a cost of only $2 since it is paid for in part by the district treasury.

Dallas Circle of Czech Women — Krouzek Ceskych Zen President Bertha called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited, and we remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of one of our members, Bertha Malik, and for Mary Martinek, sister of Bessie Tydlaska.

Bertha welcomed 17 members; one guest, Cheri Petr, daughter of Wanda Petr; and four men guests, Henry, John, Julius, and Bob. Bertha says it was good to see everyone. She and Joyce just got back from the Czech Republic, and they had a good time. She stated it also was good to be home.

Secretary Carole Faraizl read the minutes of the June meeting, and they were approved as read.

Treasurer Deanna Houpy gave everyone a copy of the treasury report. She read the report, and it was accepted as read. Henry Cechan, John Becan, and Julius Podhrasky audited the books, and they reported the books passed the audit.

Membership Chairman Lovene Locklear is no longer in Dallas. She said she left the membership books at Helen Oates’ house. Bertha says we need to replace Lovene. Carole Faraizl agreed to be the membership chairman.

Sunshine Committee Chairman Joyce Moore sent sympathy cards to the family of Bertha Malik and to Bessie Tydlaska on the loss of her sister, Mary Martinek. Thinking of you

cards were signed by the members for Helen Oates and Vlasta Jurcik.

Correspondence Committee Chairman Evelyn Trojacek asked if anyone knows how to contact the family of Bertha Malik to find out to whom they would like our donation in memory of Bertha to be sent to.

Joyce Moore said she sent the sympathy card to Bertha’s address. Carole suggested she could send the donation to the family of Bertha Malik in care of the funeral home, and they would forward it to the loved ones.

Evelyn read a thank you from the Czech Education Endowment Committee for the donation to the Czech Music and Culture Department of North Texas University. They also sent a CD of Czech music. Esther will put it and the letter in our trophy case showing that we support the Czech music and culture of North Texas University.

Bessie Tydlaska was absent, and Joyce Moore read the birthdays for August. Wanda Petr was ‘queen for the day’ and got to wear the crown.

“Happy Birthday” was sung to Wanda and the birthday celebrants.

News of Members Evelyn Trojacek said she talked to Vicki and Jerry Kohn, and they are doing all right. Libbie Elsik is home now and doing fine. Gilbert Kalich is home after his surgery and is also recovering.

Evelyn Cechan talked to Helen Oates, and Helen said it was too hot for her to get out. Helen is looking forward to the cooler weather so she can come to the meetings. Helen said to tell everyone hello, and she hopes to see us soon. Bessie Petr said she talked to Anna Bradberry. Anna cannot get out in the hot sun. She hopes it will be cooler by the next meeting and hopes to see us then.

Old Business We need to go over the by-laws and see if we need to change any. A bylaws committee was appointed. The committee includes Joyce Moore, Evelyn Cechan, Evelyn Trojacek, and Esther Cunningham. We will meet at Sokol and go over the by-laws one afternoon. Bertha says if you know of any changes to the by-laws, to let the committee know.

Bertha said we need a parliamentarian, and Deanna Houpy agreed to be the parliamentarian.

Announcements The Texas Culture Society meeting is August 28 at 7:30 p.m. at Sokol.

The Culture Society asked Bessie Petr

if she would like to sell kolaches at the Heritage Day at the State Fair.

Bessie said she will think about it.

The Culture Society said it would not sell kolaches at the fair. It will only sell bottled water and cold drinks.

Heritage Day at the State Fair of Texas is October 8 at the African American Museum.

No dates have been set for Sister City of Brno and Texas Culture Partnership meetings.

Dallas Fellowship Day at SPJST Lodge 84 is Tuesday, August 15 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. for food, bingo, and games. Come and bring your friends.

A motion was made that we adjourn, and we adjourned with our quotation “Mejte se vzdycky radi — Always love one another.” The do vyhry gifts were drawn and handed out.

Esther had a jar of Hershey’s Kisses, and everyone guessed the amount in the jar. Deanna Houpy won the jar.

Esther said for the September meeting, it will be a covered dish luncheon. Bring your quilt for show and tell.

Hostesses for August were Joyce Ehrenberger and Joyce Moore.

Hostesses for September are Jeraldine Becan and Laurie Houpy.

Esther said the blessing, and we enjoyed a delicious covered dish luncheon.

Our program was to hear about the trip to the Czech Republic. Bertha said that Libbie Vrla had a good writeup of the trip to Czech Republic.

She, Bob, and Diane really enjoyed visiting her relatives and Miroslav Chadl and family. She said the Slet was really spectacular. She said everything went off like clockwork.

Joyce and Joe Ehrenberger participated in the Slet in Prague, Czech Republic. Joyce and Bertha both said they visited the Moravsky Karst (Carlsbad cavern of Moravia) because it was cool. They said the buses were air-conditioned, but that is all. They do not have air conditioners in the homes or business. It was not too hot there, but when they got home Bertha got email from one of her family, and they said it was 100 degrees. Joyce and Joe stayed for another week, and Joyce went to the archives for some work on ancestors of Joe’s family.

Our next meeting is September 7.

Don’t forget your quilt and that it is a covered dish luncheon. We hope to see you then.

Expression of Sympathy

On behalf of SPJST Lodge 30, Taiton officers and members, the Resolution Committee would like to extend our sincere condolences to the family of our departed lodge member, JOYCE LILLIAN KAHANEK, who at the age of 69, passed away on Wednesday, July 26, 2006, in a Houston hospital.

She was born on November 16, 1936, to August and Mollie Sablatura Livanec in El Campo, Texas.

She was a member of the Joyce Kahanek C a t h o l i c Daughters of America; President of St. John’s Altar Society; Taiton Community Center; SPJST Lodge 30, Taiton; KJZT; VFW Ladies Auxiliary; and American Legion Auxiliary. She was a cook for the El Campo Rotary Club for many years. She was the organizational force in the kitchen for many weddings. She also sold tickets at events taking place at the Taiton Community Center.

While her children were growing up, she played a large role in the SPJST youth club. She spent many years as the assistant youth leader.

She motivated the youth members to be their best by doing their best. She led by example. She never asked the youth for more than she was willing to give to them.

She is survived by daughter Karen Kahanek and fiancee Ed Zapalac of El Campo; sons, Glenn Kahanek of Rosenberg and Clarence Kahanek and wife Pam of Spring; grandchildren, Cody Kahanek and Meagan Kahanek of El Campo, and Casey Kahanek of Spring; brother Jerome Livanec of Florida; and sister, Evelyn Jurasek of Blessing.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Alvin Kahanek; and brothers, C.J., Victor, and Robert Livanec.

A parish wake service was held on Friday, July 28 at 7 p.m. at St. John’s Catholic Church in New Taiton. The services were officiated by Deacon Edward Wendel. The rosary was led by the Catholic Daughters of

America. A KJZT and Altar Society rosary was held on Saturday, July 29 at St. John’s Catholic Church at 9:30 a.m. with funeral services following.

The Reverend Joe Vrana officiated with the assistance of Deacon Edward Wendel. Burial was at St. John’s Cemetery of Taiton, Texas.

Bobby Jones of The Bobby Jones Czech Band played Joyce’s favorite song, “Red Wine Polka,” for her at the graveside services.

Pallbearers were Eugene Krpec, Kenny Mrnustik, Cody Kahanek, Casey Kahanek, Gene Berry, III, and Tony Wied. Honorary pallbearers were Meagan Kahanek and Charles Livanec.

May she rest in peace.

Resolution of Sympathy We, the members of the Resolution Committee of Lodge Hvezda Texasu, No. 47, Seaton, Texas, on behalf of our membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed sister, ANNIE SOPHIE MIKESKA. Services for Annie Sophie Mikeska, 93, of Temple were held at 10 a.m. Friday, August 4, 2006, at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home with Reverend Joe Emerson officiating.

Burial was in Seaton Cemetery.

Visitation was held from 6 to 8 p.m.

Thursday, August 3 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Mikeska died Tuesday, August 1 in a local nursing home.

Annie was born in Thorndale to Joseph Schneider and Marie Zambach Schneider. She lived in the Seaton and Temple areas most of her life.

She attended school at Stringtown Elementary. She married Edwin Mikeska, and they operated Mikeska Grocery and Market in Seaton. She then managed the Charcoal and the Chuck Wagon Drive-Ins. She was a member of Seaton Brethren Church and SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton. She was an avid reader and gardener and enjoyed ceramics and embroidery.

She was preceded in death by her husband Edwin Mikeska in 1981;

granddaughter Suzanne Dunning in 2000; and grandson Jeff Wayne Miller in 2002.

Survivors include sons, Leroy Mikeska and wife Joan of Temple and Don Mikeska and wife Monica of Zabcikville; daughter Sharon Fletcher and husband Dick of Temple; grandchildren, Kindra Koslovsky and husband David of Round Rock, Michelle Mikeska and son Kaden of Zabcikville, and Jeff Mikeska of Austin; great-grandchildren, Logan and Alexus Dunning; sisters Martha Dubcak of Bartlett and Doris Zabcik of Temple; and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Keith Andel, Ken Andel, David Koslovsky, Doug Jacobs, Billy Smetanka, and Anthony Dunning.

Expression of Sympathy We, the officers and membership of SPJST Lodge 1, Fayetteville express our heartfelt sympathy to the family of LEO JOHN PETERS, 85, of Rabb’s Prairie, who passed away July 23, 2006, at St. Mark’s Medical Center in La Grange.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 26 at 2 p.m. at Heights Funeral Home Chapel in Houston with burial in the Woodlawn Garden of Memories in Houston.

He was born March 8, 1921, in Rutersville, the son of John Herman and Cecilia Adalia (Brunner) Peters.

He married Eleanor Irene Doege on August 10, 1964, in Houston. He was a retired machinist at the Port of Houston. He was a member of the Church of Christ; SPJST Lodge 1, Fayetteville; American Legion Post 101 in La Grange; and VFW Post 9183. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II as a Staff Sergeant.

Survivors include daughter Brandy Norsworth and husband Nathan of La Grange; daughter-inlaw Donna Peters of Needville; granddaughter Chelsea Peters of Needville; step-grandson Ronnie Heitman and wife Paula of Sealy; and

She had worked in the meat department at Young’s Food Market in El Campo for many years until its closing. After her retirement, she enjoyed baking and ironing for others.

She was a member of St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church; Catholic Daughters of America Court No. 1374; KJZT; and SPJST Lodge 30, Taiton.

A parish wake service with the rosary was led by the Catholic Daughters at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 30 at Triska Funeral Home. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, May 31 at 11 a.m. at St. Philip Catholic Church with the Reverend Gary Janak officiating. Interment followed at the Holy Cross Memorial Park Cemetery.

Expression of Sympathy On behalf of SPJST Lodge 30, Taiton Officers and Members, the Resolution Committee would like to extend our sincere condolences to the family of our departed lodge member, FRANCES ELIZABETH VESELKA, who at the age of 74, passed away on Sunday, May 21, 2006.

She was born on August 6, 1931, in Wharton County to Adolph and Annie Bayer Veselka.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

A rosary was recited at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 25 at St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church in El Campo. Funeral services followed at 11 a.m. Officiating was Father Gary Janak. Burial was at Holy Cross Memorial Park.

Pallbearers were Floyd Fisher, Justin Ustynik, T.J. Drapela, Steven Voldan, Billy Nitsche, Kenneth Kainer, and Alvin Nitsche. Honorary pallbearers were Terry Veselka, Steven Veselka, and Alton Veselka.

Lodge 6 Cottonwood teen wins district merit grant Dear Readers, The youth club members and parents went to Sea World in San Antonio. We spent two nights. It was very enjoyable, and we want to thank our youth leader and her assistant for a wonderful time.

Lodge 17 New Tabor Youth Club reports on August meeting On August 4, 2006, Lodge 17, New Tabor held an informal meeting for the month of August. The meeting started at 7 p.m. Holly Narro prepared a dinner of spaghetti, salad, and garlic bread that we enjoyed while holding the meeting.

This month’s charity was to bring stuffed animals for the Ronald McDonald House.

Our youth leader Susan Skrabanek reported on YAD and Grandparents Day in September. There were a ton of door prizes, provided by Kolby Kahlden.

Junior and senior group talents practiced their skits for State YAD, along with the beseda dancers.

Last Saturday, August 5, we went to State YAD. I did not have any entries, but I got to have fun in the group talent. I was happy, yet amazed to see Raychel Clark win State Queen because it was only her first time. When I am 15 years old, I will run for king. Lodge 30, Taiton Youth Club plans grandparents’ social The August 6, 2006, meeting of SPJST Lodge 30, Taiton Youth Club was called to order at 4 p.m. by President Jarrett Dluhos.

Kenna Bubela led the Pledge of Allegiance. Roll call of officers and members was by Secretary Danielle Zalman. Robin Tolson was introduced as a guest at the meeting.

Under old business, Ryan Drapela gave a report on District Six and State Youth Achievement Days. The members were reminded of the District Six Bowling Tournament date of August 26. Discussion was held on paying the member’s entry fee for the bowling tournament. A motion was made

by Dylan Treumer to have the youth club pay the entry fees for which members who want to participate in the tournament. Ryan Drapela seconded the motion.

Under new business, it was reported that at our September 10 meeting, we will have a Grandparents Day social. Members were reminded to invite their grandparents. Members were also reminded that we will be cleaning the hall after the social.

Youth Leader Lisa Bubela congratulated all on their accomplishments at State YAD this past weekend.

A motion was made by Kenna Bubela to have the youth club increase the members’ donation to $25 for the Glen Flora Volunteer Fire Department. The motion was seconded by Dylan Treumer.

The August birthday celebrants are Ryan Drapela and Danielle Zalman.

Poems were read, and door prizes were exchanged.

Next Meeting—September 10 The next meeting will be held on September 10 at Taiton Community Center. The craft will be to make a Grandparents Day card. The charity will be a Grandparents Day gift.

Dear Vestnik Readers, Lodge 30, Taiton Youth Club enjoyed a Sunday afternoon of fun and swimming at our youth leader’s house.

We had our July meeting on July 16, 2006, at 7 p.m.

Gerard Marcaurele led the Pledge of Allegiance, and Dylan Treumer led the prayer. Everyone spoke of their favorite thing about camp this summer. Most everyone liked swimming the most.

Mrs. Bubela gave everyone information on District Six YAD on July 23 in Hallettsville. She told us to be there at 10 a.m. to register. She also handed out information on the District Six Educational Tour to be held July 29 in Corpus Christi. We are to meet at the Lexington Museum at 10 a.m.

Everyone brought a donation for the DAV van from our youth lodge.

It was voted on and passed. Mrs. Marcaurele will contact a representative to accept the donation.

We practiced our group talent for YAD and then enjoyed a hot dog supper and swimming in the pool at Mrs. Bubela’s house.

Our next meeting will be on August 6 at the Taiton Community Center at 3 p.m. for adults and 4 p.m.

Lodge 1, Fayetteville Youth Club Receives $2,000 from Fayetteville Bank for Ball Field Restoration The July meeting of the SPJST Lodge 1, Fayetteville Youth Club was held at the SPJST ball field. Jene Menn, president of the Fayetteville Bank, was present to donate $2,000 to the Lodge 1 Youth Club to help restore the ball field. When restored, the ball field will be useful to our school and community.

We discussed District One YAD in Caldwell. We had four people attend They were and enter projects.

Brandon Lovell, Jerry Stanley, Brittany Tompson, and Bowyn Bauer.

Bowyn is the first one in Lodge 1 to ever enter the individual talent contest. We received money and points for attending YAD. Once again,

everyone is encouraged to take part in next year’s YAD. It’s a learning experience.

Camp was discussed. We are leaving the SPJST hall at 6:30 a.m. Be there or be square! We have 21 youth attending. Among them are three leaders-in-training. Three adult chaperones are also attending.

Cookies and Brownies The meeting ended. We played ball on the ball field, ate cookies and brownies, and drank cold drinks.

Lodge 84, Dallas youth enjoys spaghetti dinner Dear Readers, On Wednesday, August 2, 2006, the youth of Lodge 84, Dallas held their annual spaghetti dinner, bingo, and bake sale event. It was a lot of fun. I ate so much spaghetti I thought I would pop! I also had a lot of fun playing bingo. Ryan Edwards was the bingo caller, and he was very entertaining. There was never a dull moment as long as he was on the stage and holding the microphone.

I sat with Jason Sims, who picked a big box of Mike-n-Ikes as a prize.

He shared them with me, which I thought was very nice. My mom bingo’d three times. She picked the school supplies as prizes. I wonder why!

Anyway, it was a very enjoyable evening, and I am glad we were able to attend.

Lodge 84, Dallas Youth Club meets August 21 Dear Readers, On Wednesday, August 2, 2006, the youth of Lodge 84, Dallas held their annual spaghetti dinner, bingo, and bake sale fund-raiser.

I came to the lodge after my preseason football scrimmage. Luckily, my mom and sister had bought my dad and me plates because I was really hungry after snapping all those footballs. They were trying me out at center, which is different from my usual offensive guard position.

Anyway, the food was delicious, especially the brownie dessert.

I played bingo, but did not win anything. I was two numbers away from winning a prize in black-out though! It was an enjoyable night, and I hope everyone who attended had a great time.

Christina Kirby and Jimmy will be going to State YAD with their Sonny and Cher duet. Who knew my brother would make such a cute girl?

Lodge 186 Caldwell youth plan hamburger lunch this Sunday We had our meeting on August 6, 2006, at the SPJST Hall in Caldwell.

We discussed and decided to have a Grandparents Day appreciation dinner on Sunday, September 10. Thus, we will have our regular meeting in September on the same day at 2:30 p.m., due to it being Labor Day weekend on the first weekend, and some

will be out of town.

We are also having a hamburger fund-raiser on Sunday, August 20. It is to be a drive-through at SPJST Lodge 186 Hall from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Tickets are $6 and can be purchased from any youth club member. Lunch will be a boxed lunch consisting of a hamburger, drink, and a bag of chips.

Lodge 84, Dallas Youth Club Activities Dear Readers, The Lodge 84, Dallas Youth Club had its annual spaghetti dinner fundraiser on August 2. Lots of people attended, and all had fun. The spaghetti was yummy, and my grandma bought me some apricot kolaches from the bake sale. They

are my favorite.

After dinner, we played bingo.

There were tables of prizes, so many people got to win. Our youth club president, Ryan Edwards, was the bingo caller. He did a great job.

Czech language classes to be offered in Dallas A beginner’s Czech language class will be offered in Dallas starting on Monday, September 11, 2006. These classes will be held each Monday night for 12 weeks ending on November 27. The class will be from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Czech Club, located at 4930 Military Parkway in Dallas, Texas.

This is a very concentrated course that will cover pronunciation, grammar, reading, and vocabulary. It will also include presentations on Czech history and culture.

Although designed for beginners, advanced Czech language students will enjoy a good review. Each student will receive printed handouts along with a progressive CD-ROM containing the class presentations for additional home study. Best of all, you grade your own work!

The class is free, and you are under no obligation to join or belong to any organization. All you need bring is a pencil and a desire to learn a little Czech. August 30—“Kolya” On the last Wednesday of three consecutive months, Czech films will be shown at the library. This first film of the series, on August 30, is titled “Kolya” (Kolya is the name of a little Russian boy who is one of the main characters in the film). The plot of the film involves a bachelor Czech musician who suddenly finds that he is the adoptive father of the young fiveyear-old boy. The boy speaks no Czech, and the musician speaks almost no Russian. The story takes place during the hectic days just preceding the Velvet Revolution.

Typically Czech, the film is both funny and poignant.

Austin Czech Historical Association meets August 22 The Austin Czech Historical Association’s monthly potluck meeting is Tuesday, August 22 at 7 p.m. at the Gethsemane Lutheran Church, located at 200 West Anderson Lane in Austin, Texas. The mission of the association is to preserve Czech culture.

Howard Wilson will present information on the Lifetime Learning program at Concordia College where various inexpensive classes are available for senior citizens.

Updates to History Museum Grant now available The Texas Historical Commission (THC) announces a complete web update concerning the history museum grant program. The program is designed to offer grant funds to small history museums for preservation and conservation projects. Some of the projects that are approved for assistance include obtaining archival storage units, the implementation of collections management software, and the acquisition of specialized conservation equipment. The grants cover up to 50 percent of a project’s total cost with a maximum grant amount of $1,000. Museums must provide the remaining 50 percent of the cost in matching funds or a combination of cash and in-kind services.

The grant funds are payable upon completion of a project as a reimbursement for expenses incurred. To ensure the proper allocation of funds, a completion report and proof of purchase is required as documentation.

The new guidelines will be posted in advance of the mid-October deadline for grant funds offered to small history museums. CHS hosts summer meeting and genealogy seminar The Czech Heritage Society of Texas (CHS) Summer State Meeting and Genealogy Seminar was held at the American Legion Hall in Gonzales, Texas, on Friday and Saturday, July 28 and 29, 2006.

Opening ceremonies was at 5 p.m.

The group was greeted by State President Jean Blaha Davis, County Judge David Bird, and Bob Burchard.

The first speaker of the evening was CHS Historian Robert Janak who spoke on researching Czech-Brethren records. He went over what records were available and the types of information that could be obtained from them. He also pointed out interesting statistics obtained from those records.

VĚSTNÍK The second speaker for the evening was Susan Eason, archivist for the Catholic Archives in Austin. She gave an overview of what records were available to research from the Catholic churches, what information could be obtained from those records as well as the times the archives were open.

The Gonzales CHS Chapter provided a light meal of sandwiches, chips, and iced tea. Your sweet tooth was satisfied with a kolac or slice of apple pie. The rest of the evening was spent visiting with old friends and new plus research time with the CHS traveling library.

Saturday morning registration opened at 8:30 a.m. with time to visit the exhibit booths and traveling library before the opening session at 9 a.m. Exhibitors at this meeting were the Old Homestead Publishing Company and SPJST. Chapter exhibits were from the Gonzales Chapter, Fort Bend Chapter (book sales), and McLennan-Hill Chapter.

A special exhibit, brought by Angelina Kretzschmar of Bexar County, was a hand-drawn family chart of the Arnost Bergman family done by Albert Blaha.

American National Anthem, and the Czech National Anthem. County Judge David Bird welcomed everyone and gave a history of Gonzales and the town’s place in Texas history. The audience then participated in singing “Texas, Our Texas.” Attorney Bob Bruchard and Lois Williams then enacted a dialogue between the “Widow McCoy” and another Gonzales settler that gave an overview of the life and times of early Texas.

President Jean Davis acknowledged the following guests in the audience, John Zavadil “Mr. John” Polka DJ on KCTI 1450 in Gonzales and his wife, and 2006 essay winner, Christine Gentry. Janis Hrncir was acknowledged for putting the conference together.

The first speaker of the day was Doug Kubicek, Lavaca County Historian, who spoke on the Battle of Gonzales, history of the “Come and Take It” cannon, and the Czech connection. Czechs have been influencing Texas and U.S. history from the early 1700s by way of the Jesuits who were trained in Prague. Military history also owes a debt of thanks to a Czech for military mobilization. Mr. Kubicek showed several other influences of the Czechs on our history.

The next speaker was Carroll Brincefield, history professor at Blinn College, who spoke on “A Cultural Look at Cemeteries as a Genealogical Source.” She gave all an insight into how to read a cemetery, how to look for the cultural influence, the affluence of the society, the art work inherent in the memorials, and the information obtainable from the stones, the cemeteries themselves, and the people visiting there. She laid out what a basic kit should contain for doing your cemetery search, and she provided handouts on how to properly clean headstones and do gravestone rubbings.

The meeting broke for lunch at noon. The meal consisted of roast pork, German potatoes, green beans, and iced tea. Kolaches and pie were available for dessert.

VĚSTNÍK Gonzales Chapter, and a separate set of door prizes provided by the SPJST, were given out before the start of the CHS summer state meeting at 1:15 p.m. The State meeting was presided over by Jean Blaha Davis. Visitors acknowledged were Leigh Ann Darilek of Gonzales, a frequent writer for the Cesky Hlas and a young lady from the Czech Republic who was visiting with the Laddie Zezula family. Various committee and officer reports were given and the upcoming Radhost group schedule was discussed, as was the joint agreement with Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center to raise money for a library, archives and museum to be built at La Grange. An announcement of other activities coming up was given, and the meeting was then adjourned.

The final speaker of the day was Leo Baca, founding member of CHS, whose main interest now is the application of genetics to traditional genealogical research. He spoke on “What DNA Studies Tell Us about Our Czech Background.” He gave an overview of what DNA tests show, the different groupings and sub groupings and how some people are having good luck in finding family members through DNA.
