ongratulations to the SPJST sales force on a great job during the month of June. Agents wrote 400 applications and more than $15 million insurance in June. Sales for the first half of 2006 are 2,123 applications written and almost $91 million insurance written. That’s really great! The Action ’06 goal is 2,625 applications written, and when the goal is achieved, many exciting incentives will be available to lodges and youth clubs.

Supreme Lodge Vice President Gene McBride, who manages the Insurance Department, was beaming last week when the numbers were tallied. “I know I sound like a broken record, but I am so proud of these agents,” he said. “ They are a great team. Thank you. Thank you.

Thank you.”

Hats off to the agents in District Four. Overall, the district has written 699 applications and $31 million of insurance since January.

According to Insurance Department figures, District Four is posting the highest numbers ever in applications written, insurance written, and earned premium. The agents have

an inspired and motivated leader — State Field Representative Charles Lindley — and that certainly makes a big difference. I oftentimes congratulate Charles on District Four’s progress. With his positive and uplifting attitude, Charles is always quick to give the credit to his agents. Charles attributes his success to “the good Lord, good agents, a good boss, and a great company.”

Congrats again, SPJST Sales Agents, and thanks to the lodge and youth members all across the state who continue to recommend friends and family for membership in SPJST. We appreciate you, and you are contributing to SPJST’s success.

SPJST Home Office sets July 19 Groundbreaking Ceremony Dear Brothers and Sisters, You are cordially invited to attend the groundbreaking ceremony for the SPJST Home Office expansion project. The event will take place at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 19 at the building site located at 520 North Main Street in Temple, Texas. The groundbreaking will take place in conjunction with the regular quarterly meeting of the SPJST Supreme Lodge. For more than 35 years, the SPJST Home Office, located at 520 North Main Street in Temple, has provided the SPJST with a base of opera-

tions from which to serve its 116 lodges and more than 50,000 members throughout Texas. The 16,000 square-foot addition will offer expanded office space in addition to a state-of-the-art sales and fraternal training facility. Thank you for your kind support over these many years.

Lodge 202, Jourdanton Member Expresses Appreciation Dear SPJST Family, My name is Phillip Barta, and I have been an SPJST youth club member since I was 12 years old and your District Seven King for the past two years. I would like to say some very special thank yous to the SPJST Youth Program, and all the important people in it. I was one of the original members of the Lodge 202, Jourdanton Youth Club. In the past six years, I have truly realized how crucial the SPJST has been to helping me become as successful as I am today.

I would first like to extend a thank you to the person who got me involved in the SPJST—my grandmother, Mary Ann Barta. If it wasn’t for her, I would have never gotten involved in this wonderful organization that has helped me become who I am today.

SPJST records 2,123 applications written in Action ’06 campaign Through the end of June, the SPJST received 2,123 applications for insurance certificates. The goal of the Action ’06 membership drive is 2,625 applications written.

In conjunction with SPJST’s Action ’06 program, local lodges have been assigned application goals for the year.

The lodge goal has been based largely on past performance and perceived potential.

The last column, “Youth Club Application Count,” applies to those lodges with youth clubs and reflects applications written for members between the ages of 0 and 17. “Youth Club” totals are applied toward the lodge’s total goal. The fourth column, “Lodge Incentive Count,” reflects the number of new certificates issued for the Lodge Recognition and Incentive Program.

Our treasurer, Sister Peggy Dobecka, was not present, so there was no report.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator, Sister Barbara Hykel, gave a report of a note from the SPJST Home Office regarding the State Barbecue CookOff on July 14 and 15. It will be at Lodge 47, Seaton with 100 percent supporting the SPJST Scholarship Fund.

Brother George Straten, Financial Secretary/Hall Manager, was called upon for his report. He reported receiving no correspondence from the SPJST Home Office, so he had no new members to report at this time.

There were two transfers from Lodge 54, and we welcome Irene Srubar and Anna Srubar. Hall bookings for August were given with August 4 and 18 being socials. Also, I was not certain about the lodge meeting on our usual first Sunday, August 6, since there was the Peterson reunion at the hall on that day. It was voted to go ahead and have our meeting, but it will be at 4:30 p.m. on August 6.

Sunshine Committee, Jerelene Lenart, had no report. We are glad everyone is staying well these days. I just learned through another source

that Mary Pavlas fell and broke a bone in her shoulder and will be having surgery. Get well soon, Mary.

Our 109th annual picnic is coming up real fast, but we all seem to be ready to take on the task, and all committees are doing their assigned duties.

Come to Lodge 6, Cottonwood on Sunday, July 16 and enjoy our usual fried chicken and sausage meal with all the trimmings.

Then, stick around and enjoy bingo and other games, along with door prizes and auction items. Workers for the picnic are to work Friday night on the 14th at 6 p.m., Saturday, the 15th, at 8:30 a.m., and Sunday, the 16th, starting at 5 a.m.

Since Brother George Straten and Jerelene Lenart will be unable to cook the homemade bread and boiling the potatoes for Westfest this year, he was asking for volunteers. Al and Georgie Soukup agreed to handle the bread.

Westfest will be coming up in September, so there will be volunteers later on what needs to be done.

Perhaps, we will decide in the next trustees meeting on July 21 at 7:30 p.m.

Georgie Soukup and Irene Peterson, along with Al Soukup, presented a donation to Beverly Soukup Williams for the Multiple Sclerosis Society (known as MS). Chairman Evelyn Bezdek will be taking a donation check to the Family Abuse Center shortly. This should complete most of our contributions at this time.

Brother Robert Schiemenz spoke briefly regarding fraternalism and how folks should work together and get along with each other and be able to voice their opinions and be able to express a vote.

Brother Johnnie Krizan spoke briefly regarding the tremendous job that Lodge 6 did in hosting the District Three Youth Achievement Day. He thanked all workers and parents and especially the kids for the nice work

together. There were about 200 people in attendance with lots of good crafts and talents.

Those in attendance with July birthdays were Sisters Evelyn Bezdek and Evelyn Muehlstein, along with Brother Henry Blahuta. Happy birthday to you folks and to all with a birthday this month.

Door prizes were drawn with progressive door prize winners being Bryan L. Alexander and Catherine L. Janes, not present. There were three attendance door prize winners.

Trustees’ Meeting—July 21 There will be a trustees’ meeting on Friday, July 21 at 7:30 p.m. at Lodge 6, Cottonwood. This meeting needed to be called due to any changes that may take place regarding the upcoming Westfest.

Lodge 8, Weimar reports on meeting Lodge 8 members met Monday, June 26 at the Veteran’s Hall in Weimar. President Leo Jares called the meeting to order with everyone reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, led

by State FAC Chester Jenke. A moment of silence was observed for our deceased members. We then took time for a light supper and watermelon.

After everyone was refreshed, we continued our meeting. District Six State Field Representative Karen Kaspar, State FAC Chester Jenke, and Mrs. Jenke were our visitors. All of our Lodge 8 officers were present.

JoAnn Jares read the minutes of the last meeting, and they were approved after a correction was made. The treasurer gave her report, and it was accepted as read.

A letter from the SPJST LAM acknowledging our donation in memory of Evelyn Shumbera was read.

It was also reported that Leo and JoAnn Jares delivered the collection of eyeglasses to the SPJST Home Office on June 20. They will be donated to the Houston eyeglass recycling center.

Karen told us about the bowling tournament to be held August 26 at El Campo Bowling Center. This will take the place of the barbecue cookoff held in previous years. The District Six prize drawing for the annual fund-raiser will benefit the District Six Scholarship Fund. It will be held at our District Six Fall Meeting in October.

Chester Jenke spoke a few words about his new job. He has been traveling around the state visiting the SPJST lodges and meeting the members. We were happy to have him with us.

Lodge 80, Holland Beach Bingo Blast

SPJST Lodge 80, Holland hosted a beach bingo night on July 8, 2006.

Everyone had a great time, and the fun atmosphere was contagious!

Melvin and Carolyn Tobola celebrated their 47th wedding anniversary in June.

Lodge 15 Buckholts reports on July meeting While I am not the lodge reporter, I did attend the July meeting of Lodge 15, Buckholts and wanted to express how impressed I was at the loyalty and dedication of the members attending the meeting.

President Doug Williams asked me to lead the group in the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by a moment of silence for our three departed brothers.

Minutes of the last meeting were read by Secretary Dorothy Tomascik and approved as read. A report was given by Treasurer Virginia Williams and was also approved as read. Then, new business was transacted.

I recall back in the “olden days” when the meetings were held on a Sunday afternoon and were attended by so many men and women. In those days, the meetings were held in the Czech language. That was before the dome of the hall was enclosed, and there always seemed to be an echo present.

Now the meetings are held at 5 p.m. during the second Monday of each month. This is helpful to some of our members, especially Joe and Lilly Zajicek who now live in Temple.

Mr. Joe told me he is 98 years of age

The time enables them to return home before dark.

Mrs. Hilda Kuzel Burtis told me her chickens don’t know what daylight savings time is and if she isn’t there, the coyotes will eat them.

We all have heard of the lady who is campaigning for governor with the slogan of being “one tuff grandmother.” Evidently, she has not met Mrs. Burtis who is 90 years young, has chickens and cattle on her farm, and still drives the tractor. Now, if that isn’t a “tuff grandmother,” I don’t know what is.

Several years ago, I donated two orange traffic cones to the lodge.

They are always used at the annual BHS/Community Reunion. Now, the lodge had a need for two more so Virginia Williams asked me if I could buy two more cones. Of course, she didn’t specify if she wanted chocolate or vanilla, so I bought orange again.

The meetings are followed with refreshments that vary from month to month. Door prizes are also given. I especially like the original prizes such as the one I won—some beautiful red, ripe tomatoes from Frank and Dorothy Tomascik’s garden.

Lodge 40 El Campo reports on July meeting President Sheldon Holub called the meeting to order at 2 p.m. Thirtythree members and three guests were present. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited, and a moment of silence was observed for the deceased mem-

bers and ill in the community.

Roll call cited all officers present, except Jennifer Kunetka. All trustees were present.

Special guest was Daisy Mae, Sheldon Holub’s dog. Miss Daisy Mae performed for our lodge with instructions from her owner, Sheldon Holub. The members enjoyed the performance.

Secretary Debbie Sczech read the minutes from the June meeting, and they were approved as read.

Communications were read by Secretary Debbie Sczech. A letter from District Six Director Mike Ahlstrom states we will have a bowling tournament on August 26 at the El Campo Bowling Alley.

Registration forms are available.

Debbie made copies and handed them out after the meeting. Ardis Bacak read thank you notes from Leslie Thane, Lauren Wells, Crystal Bacak, Clint Bacak, and Chelsea Jackson. Sheldon reported on our lodge review of the brainstorm game that our lodge performed with Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek from the SPJST Home Office in Temple.

The treasurer’s report was prepared by Lorraine Kana.

FAC Dee Floyd thanked the workers. August will be a potluck meal.

Members are asked to bring a covered dish, and the lodge will provide the dessert.

The youth leader reported on District Six YAD in Hallettsville on Sunday, July 23. The youth club’s July meeting will be on Tuesday, the 11th at 6 p.m. The youth also have a pizza social scheduled.

Sales agents’ reports were given.

For the Bingo Committee, Sheldon reported that the hall will continue to have $100 games for the month of July due to the wonderful success in June. Also, the $650 jackpot will continue each Monday night.

Daisy Mae Visits Lodge 40 El Campo-Hillje Daisy Mae is a five-year-old half dachshund-half poodle. She performed tricks for Lodge 40 members after the meeting on Sunday, July 12.

One of her tricks included climbing a ladder to get a ball. Her owners are Karen and Sheldon Holub.

Quarterly reports are due July 25.

There will be no bingo on September 4 and December 25.

The snack bar report was presented by Josephine Bacak.

Sheldon Holub reported for Hall Rental Chairmen Tria Svatek. He announced the new hall rental fees.

Booked dates for 2006 are July 7, 8, 14, 15, 21, 22, 28, and 29; August 4, 5, 18, and 19; September 15 and 16; October 6 and 7. Booked dates for 2007 are March and June.

Mr. Daniel Linhart reported that he has heard good things about the cemetery upkeep in District Six. The mowing committee reported that the yard was mowed.

Debbie Sczech of the Advertisement Committee reported that she continues to put a bingo advertisement on the cable channel for the weekly bingo.

Lodge 84, Dallas Fellowship Day enjoyed by attendees We all enjoyed the monthly Fellowship Day on Tuesday, June 30, 2006.

Thanks to all who joined us for food, bingo, games, and socializing.

The food was delicious, and bingo and games were exciting. We were honored with some young children.

They joined in all the activities and played bingo and won several prizes.

Our fellowship day is for all ages— young and older members and guests.

We want to thank John Becan for calling bingo. He does a very good job. We also appreciate all the other help he provides.

Thanks to all the members and guests who came from around the Metroplex. Some came from Ennis, Arlington, Plano, Mesquite, etc. We know that it is a longer drive, and we enjoy your company.

We hope to see you each third Tuesday of the month. Our next event is scheduled for Tuesday, July 18 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Lodge 84, Dallas, located at 2625 Floyd Street, Dallas, Texas 75204.

Summer Sizzler #1 Summer sizzler number one is that the District Five Youth Achievement Day held at Lodge 88 on Sunday, July 9, 2006, had some of the hottest crafts displayed, and talent that was most entertaining. Congratulations to all of the talented young ladies and gentlemen who participated, which made not only your families proud, but also the SPJST! Special congratulations are conveyed again to the crowned District Five Queen and Duchess, Miss Jessica Piedra and Miss Zoe Saxton, respectfully. With too many names to acknowledge, the occasion was a very successful one. It was great to see Ms. Marie Stayton, past District Five Youth Counselor, present. She was supporting the youth, as always, in her positive way.

Summer Sizzler #2 Summer sizzler number two relates to the western dances being held here at the lodge, as dancers are kicking up the “dust” on the fourth Sunday of each month. Fellas, lasso your favorite ladies for a night out to hear the Country Knights on July 23 and The Winchester Band on August 27.

Summer Sizzler #3 Summer sizzler number three reminds all of you to come and support our polka and waltz dances, as well as the big band dances. The Red Ravens are playing on July 22, and Henry Tannenberger plays on August 5. The famous Billie Ledbetter Orchestra, big band, performs for your pleasure on August 20. Good health is wished to Mrs. Esther Heinsohn, Fraternal Activities Coordinator; Mr. J.R. Bruce, Trustee; Mr. Ed Jelinek, District Five State Field Representative; and Mr. Thomas Haney, all of whom have returned home after hospitalization.

Many fraternalists have been celebrating family reunions. I especially want to mention Mrs. Mary Roznovsky’s family. The Gorka 37th family reunion celebrated in June, as did my 52nd Filipp family reunion during the same month. The SPJST

has been built from great family heritages!

Ann Pustejovsky gave the bar/kitchen report. Kenneth Cepak will give the May and June treasurer’s report for the bingo, charity and 183 Club accounts at the July meeting.

Milka Bralic gave the FAC report.

She informed the membership about the upcoming Flag Day celebration on June 14.

Kay Gerlich Weeks gave the youth club report. The youth members recently participated in the National Join Hands Day on May 5; American Cancer Society Relay for Life on May 19 and 20; Leader-in-Training camp on June 2 through 4; and lockin/scrapbook workshop/youth meeting/officer installation on June 9 and 10. Upcoming activities are District Three YAD on June 25 at Lodge 6, Cottonwood; District Three Camp on July 21 through 24; and State YAD in Temple on August 5.

Under new business, Ann Pustejovsky reported that the ice machine had some maintenance done recently and is working well.

The members voted to donate to the American Cancer Society per member participating in the recent Relay for Life; to SPJST District Three Camp for food, drinks, and snacks; and to the Impact Basketball Club for Kyaris Johnson.

Ann Pustejovsky reported that she had sent out “welcome letters” to new lodge members inviting them to our various lodge activities. She stressed the importance of our members keeping up-to-date on SPJST news and activities by reading their Vestnik. If there are any members who are not receiving this informative SPJST publication, please let her know so she can ensure that every member of Lodge 183 is on the mailing list.

She reminded everyone about the Czech Heritage Day at the State Fair of Texas on Sunday, October 8 and our Lodge 183 Christmas party on Saturday, December 9. She also reported that checks have been mailed to those graduating members of our lodge.

The door prize was won by Cecil Phillips.

There will be no family social night in June. Our next lodge meeting will be on Monday, July 10 at 7 p.m.

Lodge 247, San Marcos Fourth of July Picnic Fun Lodge 247, San Marcos held its Fourth of July picnic on July 2, 2006.

Members gathered at Landa Park in New Braunfels, Texas, for lots of fun.

Everyone participated in a train ride around the park and fun at the water park. Thank you to President Art Lopez for the delicious hamburgers.

The youth who participated in the

District Seven Camp attended the picnic and shared their pictures and stories of the great time they had at camp.

The lodge members also enjoyed celebrating birthdays and getting to know new members. A total of 44 members attended the Fourth of July lodge meeting and picnic.

Youth Letters Section District Two YAD Sunday, July 23 Lodge 47, Seaton Dear Members, A warm welcome is extended to all District Two members, family and friends to our annual District Two Youth Achievement Day to be held on Sunday, July 23, 2006. Lodge 47, Seaton will host this year’s youth spectacular. A special welcome is extended to members of all other districts, Supreme Lodge Officers, and Directors.

District Two trip: Saturday, July 29 to Fiesta Texas Dear Members, This year, the annual District Two trip will be to Fiesta Texas on Saturday, July 29, 2006. This is open to all SPJST members and their guests.

At the present time, all attending will travel by their own vehicles and will meet at the front gate at 9:30 a.m. to get the pre-ordered tickets. Regular ticket price is $43.99. We are getting the group rate of $24.99 per ticket.

The ticket allows entry to all rides and the water park. Also, tickets are available for meals at a reduced price of $6.99 per meal per person. You may purchase the meal tickets, or you may purchase food on your own. The meal tickets will also need to be purchased in advance. No food or drinks are allowed inside the park. There is also a $10 parking fee. I have pre-purchased some admission and meal tickets.

The park is open from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. Please let your youth leader know if you are planning on attending this trip.

I have been asked by numerous parents about the rental of buses. I have checked with the bus lines, and we would be able to rent a bus leaving from Temple and stopping in Round Rock for a pick-up. Unfortunately, due to the extra expense of a new camp this year, the district will be unable to take care of the total bus charge. We are asking each SPJST member to pay $12 for the bus ride.

Non-members will be required to pay $20. This is less than one-half the total charge. The district will pick up the rest of the tab. This will only be possible if we can fill a 49- or 57-passenger bus. Please let me know as soon as possible if you are interested in riding the bus, so the bus can be reserved. Your interest may make the difference between getting a bus and not. With the price of gas, parking fees, and not having to drive home after a long day at the park, I feel this is very accommodating. Please call your youth leader or myself as soon as possible. The bus fare will need to be paid in advance with no refund. I must have all money turned in no later than YAD on July 23.

Please note: If we do hire the bus, it will not stay at the park during the day.

District Three Camp July 21 to 24 Camp Hope in McGregor Dear Campers and Chaperones, District Three will be ready for action in ’06 at Camp Hope, formerly Camp Val Verde, in McGregor, Texas.

This year’s camp theme is “Action ’06—Always on the Move with the SPJST Youth.”

Get Ready . . .

Get ready because “Camp Val Verde” was recently purchased by Gary Findley through his Findley Foundation. Last November, the Findley Group owner bought Camp Fire USA’s Camp Val Verde for $1 million through his foundation.

The opportunity, he said, was divinely inspired. Gary and wife Kim had always wanted to be in a ministry.

His property abuts to Camp Val Verde and approximately eight to 10 years ago, he said to his wife that if that property ever goes up for sale he would like to purchase. Gary claims that God opened a door and that’s what He wanted us to do—to open up the camp to the community. And has he done that!

After the purchase and giving the Camp Fire USA’s local Tejas Council a 100-year free lease on the place, he renamed the campground Camp Hope. The non-profit organization focuses on developing leadership skills in Waco-area youths. Since the sale, the Findley’s foundation has spent between $300,000 to $400,000 to improve the camp, building a new barn and covered arena for the Heart of Texas Therapeutic Riding Association. Findley said his plan for the camp ultimately is to serve as a place for community gatherings, marriage and pastor retreats, and business conferences. He also plans to add a chapel and conference center, although construction may need to wait on fund-raising.

Still, children will be the main focus on the camp, Findley said. With new baseball fields, sand volleyball, basketball courts, and an updated expanded ropes course. What more can be added for local youths? In the future, he plans maybe some type of petting zoo for the children who come out from hospital.

District Six YAD Sunday, July 23 in Hallettsville Dear Members of District Six, On Sunday, July 23, 2006, Lodge 4, Hallettsville will host the annual District Six Youth Achievement Day. It will be held at the American Legion Hall in Hallettsville with the program

starting at 1 p.m. The hall is located at 107 North Main Street off Highway 90.

Youth from Lodge 4, Hallettsville; Lodge 30, Taiton; Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje; Lodge 97, Placedo; Lodge 148, El Maton; and Lodge 240, Bay City will be competing for district titles which will take them to state competition in August.

Competition prizes and awards will be given out for youth achievement, point system, craft, talent, scrapbook, poster, and royalty competition.

The YAD program begins at 1 p.m., and I would like to invite each of the District Six members, members of all the districts, friends, and Supreme Lodge Officers and Directors to come join us for a great afternoon of entertainment. It is very important that we support the youth as they display their many various talents. Your presence on this day will continue the support needed by our youth — future leaders of our Society.

District Seven: youth in action at camp Fifty youth, 12 leaders-in-training, and 20 adults showed up for District Seven Camp June 29 through July 2.

Camp was held near Bandera at a Woodman of the World (WOW) camp. We enjoyed State Youth Director John Hoelscher teaching us new ways to say grace before meals.

Camp opened with a campfire and sing-along.

Each morning, we met at the flag pole to start the day with a flag ceremony. At camp, we shot rifles and learned to use bow and arrows on the shooting range. We played basketball, volleyball, ping pong, made crafts, and went swimming. Since it rained some almost every day, we learned new indoor games as well.

One of the highlights of camp was a tug-of-war tournament in a mud pit.

Our clothes will never be the same.

We also had other group activities like capture the flag.

The food was great, and many new friendships were made.

Lodge 6 Cottonwood Youth Club expresses thanks Dear Readers, On Sunday, June 25, 2006, District Three held its Youth Achievement Day at our hall, Lodge 6, Cottonwood. The youth displayed their talent, crafts, and royalty. The attendance was overwhelmingly good.

I want to thank our cooks for a very delicious meal.

The youth of Lodge 6 with their leader and her assistant did a good job getting everything set up. Also, they all stayed and did a good job of cleaning up. I also want to thank the parents who came out and helped.

Lodge 84, Dallas youth wins at YAD Dear Readers, I went to District Three Youth Achievement Day last month at Lodge 6, Cottonwood. I did well with my projects. Here are my results:

District One Camp July 20 to 23 Forest Glen Spring in Rosebud Dear Readers, District One Camp is here! I hope everyone is ready to have a great time at our new camp facility.

We will start camp with registration from 10 to 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 20. Camp will be dismissed at 10 a.m. on Sunday, July 23. Below are directions to the camp.

Directions to Forest Glen Spring District One Camp Site Travel to Highway 77 until you get to Rosebud. In Rosebud, take a right at the red blinking light onto Loop 265 (Main Street). Stay on Loop 265 for approximately 1 1/2 miles. Road will curve to the left, follow the road to FM 1048. Stay on FM 1048 for approximately 5 miles. Turn left on FM 2027. Stay on this road for about 3/10 of a mile. Turn right onto CR 333.

Follow CR 333. CR 333 forks into CR 331 (take left at fork). Stay on CR 331 and follow it to the entrance of Forest Glen Springs (approximately 2 1/2 miles of CR).

Go through the gate. Follow the road staying to the left until you get to the cabin area.

Just a reminder in case you did not get a list from your youth leaders.

Rejcek family The bi-annual Rejcek reunion will be Saturday, August 5, 2006, at St. Martin’s Hall in Tours, Texas. All descendants and friends of Raymund and Kristyna (Konecna) Rejcek are invited to attend and join in the fun.

A covered dish meal will be served at 5 p.m., and each family is requested to bring a generous meat entree, side dish, vegetable dish, or a salad and dessert. In Memoriam Expression of Sympathy

Resolution of Sympathy

We, the officers and membership of Lodge 202, Jourdanton express our heartfelt sympathy to the family of DORA RICKRIM QUILLIAN, age 83, who passed away Saturday, June 24, 2006.

A visitation was held Monday, June 26 at Hurley Funeral Home in Pleasanton from 2 to 8 p.m. Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 27 at Hurley Funeral Home.

Interment was in St. John Lutheran Cemetery in Jourdanton. Pallbearers were nephews Larry Kocurek, Harvey Koerner, Bill Rickrim, Allen Woelke, Vernon Woelke, and friend of the family, Peter Hons.

Dora was born west of Taylor on February 19, 1923. She grew up in Los Angeles, Texas, and in 1936, moved to Jourdanton. There, she worked in the Matocha’s Store. She later obtained her beautician’s license and worked at Wheeler’s Beauty Parlor in Pleasanton. Dora was a long-standing member of St. John Lutheran Church.

Dora is survived by husband, George Wesley Quillian of Pleasanton; daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Roger Herschap of Pleasanton; grandchildren, Jessica and Hayley Herschap of Pleasanton; stepdaughter, Bess Butler of Chicago; and sisters Ella Woelke of Jourdanton and Erna Kocurek of Coldspring.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Mathilda Rickrim; brothers, William and Alfred Rickrim; and sister, Leonie Rickrim.

Dora was a devoted lodge member of Lodge 202, Jourdanton and served many years as a lodge officer. She will be missed.

Funeral services for Faye Poboril, age 85, of Temple were held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 3, 2006, at Memorial Baptist Church with Reverend Roy Parker officiating.

Burial was in Hillcrest Cemetery.

Mrs. Poboril died Friday, June 30 at her residence.

Mrs. Poboril was born in Cedar Springs to Roderick Boyd and Ellen Warren Boyd. She graduated from Chilton High School and attended Mary Hardin-Baylor College. She married Joe Poboril October 12, 1940. She and her husband owned and operated Poboril Paint and Body Shop for many years. She was a member of Temple Towmans Association, Memorial Baptist Church, and SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton.

She was preceded in death by sons, Bobby Joe Poboril and Joe Boyd Poboril.

Survivors include daughter, Sonja Geisselbrecht of Houston; grandchildren Julie Geisselbrecht of Richmond and Brandon Geisselbrecht of Houston; greatgrandchildren Ashley, Keri, and Cody Cline; and her beloved dog, Lucy.

Visitation was from 3 to 5 p.m.

Lodge 20, Granger member seeks Frenstat Museum donations Below is a short explanation of the way I became involved with the museum in Frenstat pod Radhostem in the Czech Republic.

My grandmother, Frantiska Knezkova, came to Texas when she was 14 years old. She was the only one in her immediate family to come to America. She corresponded with her siblings, her cousins, and her mother until her mother died in 1939.

My mother, Frantiska’s daughter, saved some of the letters that Grandmother Frantiska had received from her family in Czechoslovakia.

After my mother died, my sister kept grandmother’s letters, and in 1999, she gave the letters to me. Through these letters, I was successful in locating my second cousin, Vlasta Knezkova Golasova, and her husband, Radomir Golas, who are living in Frenstat, Czech Republic.

In September, 2002, fourteen Czech businessmen came to Austin, Texas.

Several members of Travis/Williamson Counties Czech Heritage Society, including me, spent one day with them, showing them the State Capitol and the Bob Bullock Museum in Austin. Mayor Strnadel, from Trojanovice, who is a personal friend of Radomir and Vlasta Golas, and a member of this group, stayed overnight at our home. Jiri Unruh, the owner of the television station in Frenstat, was another one of the gentlemen that I met that weekend.

In May, 2003, my wife, Nancy, and I traveled to the Czech Republic and during that trip, we spent one week in Frenstat, meeting approximately 40

VĚSTNÍK Museum in Frenstat. Due to the fact that I was acquainted with these gentlemen, on the last night we were there, they asked me to do them a favor. They told me about the museum that they were planning and asked me to find a wagon for them, like the ones the early Czech settlers used when they arrived in Texas. They also asked me to help them obtain donations from fellow Czechs in Texas for the Frenstat Museum. The museum is dedicated to honoring the people who left Czechoslovakia and came to Texas, beginning in the 1850s. The museum is a National Museum and is the only one of its kind in the Czech Republic. I am honored that they have asked me to be a part of this endeavor. Fellow Czechs in Texas should also be proud of the fact that people of the Czech Republic wish to honor our ancestors in this way. The museum will officially open at a celebration in July, 2007. The museum is located across the street from the Town Hall and the Town Square in Frenstat.

You, too, can participate in this great endeavor. Look around your farm, storeroom, or attic to see if you have any old memorabilia that you would be willing to donate. We are looking for things like old one-row mule-drawn cultivators, old sulky plows, walk-behind plows, stary pluh, or anything that your grandparents used, such as an old cookstove or other furniture that was used at that time. Everyone who donates items to the museum will be acknowledged by having his or her name displayed on a plaque beside his contribution in the museum.

Czech footprints across the Texas bluebonnet fields The Czech Heritage Society of Texas (CHS) is hosting its summer state meeting and genealogy conference in Gonzales, Texas, on July 28 and 29, 2006. It will be held at the American Legion Hall (behind the Wal-Mart), off East Highway 90A. Admission is free and Saturday lunch is $7.

The conference will open on Friday, July 28 with registration and the opening ceremony from 4:30 to 5 p.m. Speakers for the evening from 5 to 7 p.m. are CHS Historian Robert Janak who will speak on “Researching Czech-Brethren Records” and Catholic Archivist Susan Eason from the Austin Diocese who will speak on “Researching Catholic Records.”

After the speakers, there will be an opportunity to visit the vendor booths and the CHS traveling library, which will have books available.

Representatives will be available to help with research until 8:30 p.m.

The day opens with registration from 8:30 to 9 a.m. on Saturday, July 29. Speakers for the morning are Lavaca County Historian Doug Kubicek on “Come and Take It: Battle of Gonzales and the Czech Connection;” Carroll Brincefield, History Professor at Blinn College, Schulenburg, on “A Cultural Look at Cemeteries as a Genealogical Source.”

Lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with opportunity to visit the vendor booths and do some personal research in the CHS traveling library.

The CHS will hold its summer state meeting from 1:15 to 2:30 p.m.

The afternoon speaker will be Leo Baca, Texas Czech Historian, on “What DNA Studies Tell Us about Our Czech Background.” After the last speaker, there will be time to do more research and visit the booths. As a special treat, a tour of the Gonzales Pioneer Village has been arranged from 4 to 5 p.m.
