Fraternalism and Lodges in Action

he Lodge 47, Seaton annual picnic was Sunday, June 4. This year’s event featured a tractor pull on both Saturday and Sunday. My husband David and I really enjoyed watching this and seeing all of the different tractors. And, it was really interesting seeing some of the big trucks pull the sled, too. The tractor pull was something new at the picnic — and it was quite an attraction.

Congratulations to Lodge 47 on a successful picnic.

Something else new at this year’s picnic was youth beseda dancers. District Two youth have been working hard the past few months forming and practicing three beseda circles. The teen circle came out and danced for the first time at the Lodge 47 picnic.

The teens looked like they’d been dancing a long time. I was really impressed by their smiles and fun spirit.

This Saturday, June 24, the beseda dancers will be raising funds for costumes and travel expenses at the Belton Wal-Mart. If you are in the area, please stop by and support the youth.

Lodge 87’s Fantastic Thanks to Lodge 87, Temple for inviting David and me to the lodge’s appreciation dinner on June 13. We enjoyed visiting with all of the good members at Lodge 87. It was a fantastic event — and a great attendance — with standing room only!

A Great Five Months Congratulations to SPJST sales agents across the state for their success during the first five months of 2006. Here are the facts:

Year-to-Date Applications Written 2005 - 1,277 2006 - 1,723 (almost 35 percent increase) Year-to-Date Insurance Written 2005 - $51,238,465 2006 - $75,492,350 (more than 47 percent increase) Year-to-Date Earned Premium 2005 - $342,555 2006 - $413,318 (almost 21 percent increase) And, four districts — Districts One, Four, Six, and Seven have already achieved their insurance written goals for the year. District Three is only about $1 million away from achieving its goal — which will be the first time in several years.

Congrats, Sales Agents, on a job well done during the first five months. Keep up the great work.

District YAD first Youth The year’s Achievement Day was held in District Four on June 11. Twelve youth participated in arts, crafts, and individual talent contests.

Many blue ribbons were awarded to excited youth from Lodges 215, South Plains and 229, Abilene.

The day’s master of ceremonies was 2002-2003 State King Jake Holland of Lodge 25, Ennis. A senior at Texas Tech in Lubbock, Jake is president of his college fraternity and a student senator. It’s always a pleasure to visit with him.

In Next Week’s Vestnik The SPJST Flag Day Ceremony was another big event. It was a grand way to honor and salute “Old Glory.” Watch for many photos and a summary in next week’s Vestnik.

Through the end of May, the SPJST received 1,723 applications for insurance certificates. The goal of the Action ’06 membership drive is 2,625 applications written.

In conjunction with SPJST’s Action ’06 program, local lodges have been assigned application goals for the year.

Lodge Letters Section Lodge 1 Fayetteville bus trip payment due July 1 SPJST Lodge 1, Fayetteville’s chartered bus trip to the Houston Astros versus Arizona Diamondbacks baseball game is Sunday, July 30, 2006, at Minute Maid Park in Houston.

The cost is $35 for each admission and bus ride. The bus will depart at 10 a.m. from the SPJST Hall in Fayetteville and return at approximately 6 p.m.

Lodge 8, Weimar reports on May meeting Greetings from Lodge 8. We met Monday, May 22, 2006, at the Veterans Hall in Weimar. President Leo Jares called the meeting to order. All officers were present. District Six Director Mike Ahlstrom and his wife, Kathy, were our special guests. We always enjoy having them come visit with us.

Everyone recited the Pledge of Allegiance led by Melvin Tobola. A moment of silence was also observed remembering our deceased members.

Our hot dog supper was then served. Christi Kocian provided the weiners and chili. Carolyn brought the buns. Other condiments were brought by Erline, Henrietta, JoAnn, Rosie, and Donna.

Following our meal, we reconvened, and the minutes and the treasurer’s report were read. All reports were approved.

We held our annual memorial service at this meeting. Evelyn Shumbera, who passed away in April, was remembered along with all our brave veterans. We also approved sending a memorial gift to the SPJST Library,

Christi Sparkman Receives SPJST Scholarship

Lodge 6, Cottonwood President Milton Peterson presents Christi Elaine Sparkman with an SPJST Scholarship in the amount of $1,000.

The scholarship was presented at her May 26 graduation ceremony.

Christi was an active Lodge 6 Youth Club member.

BLAKE DAVIS HURTIK Blake is a member of Lodge 180, Burleson and a graduate of North Richland Hills High School. He is the son of Steve and Dalee Hurtik and the grandson of Estelle Hurtik and the late Joe Hurtik and Artie and the late Davis Doyle Drurg.

Blake plans to enroll at the University of Texas where he will study journalism.

Archives and Museum in memory of Mrs. Shumbera.

The prize for the District Six prize drawing was discussed. The president was advised to check on items and report back at the next meeting.

All those who had used eyeglasses brought them in for this meeting.

Approximately 48 pairs have been collected.

Director Ahlstrom presented a report on statewide and district projects.

We will serve watermelon at our next meeting along with our usual light refreshments.

After adjournment, we played a few games of Poker-Keeno. Annie Polnick had the highest score and won a piggy bank.

Lodge 9, Snook reports on June meeting Donnie Hejl called the meeting to order. Some of the youth club members led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Ann Schoeneman read the minutes of the May meeting, and they stood approved as read. David Kovar gave the hall manager’s report. Donnie Hejl gave the treasurer’s report. Bill Orsak gave his report. We accepted three new members.

We made final plans for the Family Fun Day on Sunday, July 2.

Marie Shelfer gave the youth club report. There were 45 youth club members present and one guest. They had a water booth at Snookfest and will help with the selling of the tickets for the games. Four of our youth attended LIT training in Bandera.

Lodge 9, Snook plans July 2 family day SPJST Lodge 9, Snook is hosting its Ninth Annual Family Fun Day at the Snook SPJST Hall on Sunday, July 2, 2006. We will serve barbecue prepared by Rick Vajdak for $7 per plate. Tickets will be available in advance from Lodge 9 officers and Snook Youth Club members. Tickets will also be available at the door. The meal will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. We will have dine-in or to-go plates. There will also be a silent auction. Come out to visit and join in the fun and fellowship.

Lodge 40 El Campo reports on June meeting President Sheldon Holub called the meeting to order at 11:30 a.m. on June 12, 2006. Fifty-six members and one guest were present. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited. A moment of silence was observed for the deceased members and ill in the community.

Roll call cited all officers present, except Ardis Bacak who was out due to an illness. All trustees were present.

Special speaker was Joe Tom Davis.

Secretary Debbie Sczech read the minutes from the May, 2006, meeting. The minutes were approved as read.

Communications were read by Secretary Debbie Sczech. Thank you notes from Chelsea Hubenak and Blake George were received.

Memorial scholarship donations on Charlie Thurmond and Eugene Holub were acknowledged.

The treasurer’s report was prepared by Lorraine Kana.

FAC Dee Floyd thanked the workers.

The Audit Committee had no report.

The youth leader reported that the youth made Father’s Day cards. The youth also donated an item for a prize drawing today.

The sales agents’ reports were given.

The Nominating Committee had no report.

The Bingo Committee reported that June is anniversary month. We will have $100 bingos for the month of June and $650 jackpot. Workers thanked the members for Bingo Night Out. There will be no bingo on the following dates: July 3; September 4; and December 25.

Snack Bar — Josephine Bacak gave her report.

Hall Rental Chairman Tria Svatek and Sheldon Holub decided to charge $100 a day for any additional days rented prior to the rental contract date. Bookings are: June is booked for the month; July 7-8, 14-15, 21-22, 28-29; August 4-5, 18-19; September 15-16; and October 6-7. For 2007, booked dates are March and June.

District Six Cemetery Chairman Vlasta Bartos had no report.

The Mowing Committee reported that the yard was mowed.

ored Karel Matejka.

The Advertisement Committee reported that Debbie Sczech continues to put bingo advertisements on the cable channel for weekly bingo.

The Scholarship, By-Law, Audit and Entertainment Committees had no reports.

Trustee J.C. Kocurek reported that he and Carmen cut down and cleaned up tree debris after some wind damage at the hall.

Members/annuities or additional add-ons to certificates were Irene Sedlock, Brenda George, Cecil Sanchez, Brenda Thompson, Patrick Cerny, and MaKayla Graham.

Edmund Kana made motion to accept these members. It was seconded by Dee Floyd.

Lodge 200 Bruceville-Eddy presents scholarships Lodge 200, Bruceville-Eddy met on Wednesday, June 7, 2006. President Allen Trigg presided and opened the meeting with the usual formalities including the Pledge of Allegiance.

Nancy Deviney presented the minutes and the treasurer’s report. Both were accepted unanimously.

Vice President Dan Ferguson discussed upcoming activities and updated his fraternal report of activities by lodge members.

Usual business matters were discussed and handled. New members accepted were Skylar Lynna Williams-Lars and James Walter Rumfield.

The two winners of Lodge 200’s $1,000 scholarships were to be contacted for photos for the Vestnik. The winners are Holly Ferguson and Rebecca Yakesch.

Raymond and Pearl Zievert celebrate 50 years of marriage The Yoakum Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Yoakum was the setting for the gathering of close family and friends, honoring Raymond and Pearl Zievert on their 50th wedding anniversary, Saturday, April 22, 2006, from 2 to 4 p.m.

Raymond had been a resident at the center since June, 2005, so the celebration was held in the dining room. There were yellow and white balloons and greenery with yellow-rose runners along the main table.

A smaller table held pictures of the Zievert family, along with givea-way keepsakes of scrolls with gold rings and ribbon and mini bags containing heart candy. There was much picture taking and visiting with loved ones.

Two special guests were present—Pearl’s mother, Katherine Sembera, age 93, and Pearl’s only living uncle, Paul Tenberg, Jr., age 91. They are both residing in the Shiner Nursing and Rehab Center.

Three of Pearl’s wedding attendants were present—her sisters, Lillie Krebs, who was a junior bridesmaid; Joyce Jackson, who was the flower girl; and Stephany Pavloke, Raymond’s sister of

Pearl and Raymond Zievert Houston, who was Pearl’s maid of honor.

There were sandwiches and finger foods of all types. The anniversary cake, a red velvet sheet cake, was decorated with white icing with gold edging, roses and lettering. It was topped with a ball of white lace which held a white heart.

In the center of the heart was a gold “50”, and the words, “Happy 50th Anniversary, Raymond and Pearl, We Made It, 1956-2006”.

White doves and gold rings were also added.

Mr. Jeffery Burton, administrator of the Yoakum Nursing and Rehab Center, gave a beautiful blessing before the meal and wished the Zieverts many more years.

Raymond E. Zievert and the former Pearl K. Sembera were united in marriage on Saturday, April 21, 1956, at St. Theresia’s Catholic Church in Houston. They are the parents of one son, Raymond, Jr. After living in Houston for 23 years, the Zieverts built their new home in the Nickel Community near Moulton. The house was built on the exact spot where the Old Nickel School once stood, just inside the Gonzales County line, near the Old Rock Store. March, 2006, marked 27 years that they lived in this location.

Raymond and Pearl are members of SPJST Lodge 142, Houston.

Everyone had a very nice time visiting, and the Zieverts received many beautiful and memorable gifts. Raymond and Pearl especially want to thank everyone for coming out to help make their day a special gift, and a memory that will always be remembered.

The youth club will host the District Seven YAD on Sunday, July 9 at Poteet High School. For the concession stand, members should bring individually packaged sandwiches, chips, cookies, or sodas. Workers are also needed.

FAC Mary Ann Barta announced the “Stuff the Bus” project is scheduled for Saturday, July 15 at the Poteet Super S. Each member is asked to bring one school supply. Workers should call FAC Mary Ann Barta.

Celebrating birthdays in June are Evan Barta, Vanessa Gonzales, Stephen Mazur, Angel Valdez, and Raven Vasquez. Anniversary celebrants are Regina and James House (19 years), Mary Ann and Evan Barta (51 years), Melba and Gus Novosad (54 years).

Lodge 204 Stephenville picnic this Saturday This Saturday, June 24 is the Lodge 204, Stephenville picnic in Stephenville Park beginning at 2 p.m.

We hope all of you members and friends will join us and have a nice day in the park.

It’s always nice to see members and friends getting together and having a good time. Let’s hope that some rain will come to our area before then as grass is beginning to die around here, and the area lakes and ponds are drying up.

Lori Elzner named teacher of the year Lodge 79, Corpus Christi FAC Jerry Elzner proudly announces that his daughter-in-law, Lori Elzner, was named Alamo Elementary School Teacher of the Year.

Lori is a BOI-born and raised on Galveston Island. She received her Bachelor’s degree from Texas A&M University-College Station, Texas in Philosophy and Spanish.

After spending a year studying abroad in Puebla, Mexico, at Universidad de Las Americas, Lori received her teaching certification and a Master’s degree in Multicultural Studies in Education from UHCL. She has taught in GISD for 16 years at Alamo and Burnet Elementary in pre-kindergarten through third grade serving as bilingual and grade level team leader, member of the Campus Improvement Council, and various other committees.

Teaching gives Lori a great deal of satisfaction, but no greater satisfaction than being with her family—husband, Tim, and two sons, Dominic and Noah.

By David Knape Lodge 187, Round Rock It is Sunday, and I am keeping momma company at the nursing home. It is around 11:30 in the morning, and we are seated at the dinner table. They have not brought dinner yet. I look around the room. The crowd is light this morning. For whatever reason, a lot of the folks are not here. Not every table is taken.

Some are even entirely empty. It is a slow Sunday here at the home.

A few of the regulars are present.

The ones I always see. Margery is

here. She eats alone now. Just last month, her husband passed away.

Until that time, the two always ate together. She would help him eat first as he could not eat that well by himself. Now he is gone, and she seems misplaced somehow. Like

My Resume Submitted by Jerry Elzner Lodge 79, Corpus Christi My first job was working in an orange juice factory, but I got canned, couldn’t concentrate.

Then I worked in the woods as a lumberjack, but I just couldn’t hack it, so they gave me the ax.

After that, I tried to be a tailor, but I just wasn’t suited for it mainly because it was a so-so job.

Next, I tried to be a chef—I figured it would add a little spice to my life, but I just didn’t have the thyme.

I attempted to be a deli worker, but any way I sliced it, I couldn’t cut the mustard.

My best job was being a musician, but eventually I found I wasn’t noteworthy.

I studied a longtime to become a doctor, but I didn’t have any patience.

Next, was a job in a shoe factory.

I tried, but I just didn’t fit in.

I became a professional fisherman, but discovered that I couldn’t live on my net income.

I managed to get a good job working for a pool maintenance company, but the work was just too draining.

So then I got a job in a workout center, but they said I wasn’t fit for the job.

After many years of trying to find steady work, I finally got a job as a historian until I realized there was no future for it.

My last job was working at Starbucks, but I had to quit because it was always the same old grind.

So I retired, and I found I am perfect for the job.

The invitations are to the first meeting we held on Sunday, September 16, 1956, where we voted to start the Teen Club, and another invitation a week later to the Sunday, September 23, 1956, subsequent actual first meeting of the Teen Club held after we had asked permission to start the club on this same day at the regular adult lodge meeting.

James Janousek, the “founder,” plans to attend the festivities that includes a buffet and dance by the Czech and Then Some, so come and see if you recognize him after 50 years. He got the idea to start the Teen Club after he submitted an essay to the Vestnik and decided it sounded too good just to be left on paper, so he put his essay into action!

half of her is gone. There is a sadness to it.

Over in the back are Susan and Gwen. They always sit together, and always at the same table. It is the last table before you go out of the room.

I guess they like that niche. They always sit there. They are two that are still fairly active. They help out some with the others. These two are always together. Where there is one, there is the other.

Mrs. Yarrow is here today. She usually sits with momma. But this morning she is sitting alone. I say hello, and she smiles. This is about the only response you get. She does not say much. In fact, she seldom speaks. To get a smile from her is a victory.

Pete Gomez is over at a middle table, toward the back. He is wheelchair bound but still fairly young. He is always happy though, it seems to me. He never argues or complains.

Even now he is smiling, although they are late with the food. He has accepted his life as it is, without regret. I wave at him and he waves back, glad for the recognition.

Mac is here. Another regular. He usually sits toward the front since he has to be fed. He is a big man, so big he cannot fit in a regular wheelchair.

He has a custom chair made from PCV pipe. He gets strapped into it and then wheeled into the room. He looks like a football player. He always wears a beard and just looks large and impressive. “Big Mac” I call him.

Momma is sitting quietly at her table, waiting for her food. She is slunk down in her wheelchair as usual. I always tease her that she is going to slide out of it one day. She always responds “That’s the way I like it,” letting me know that I am still her little boy. There is a new lady sitting at her table this morning.

She is watching me as I talk to momma. When our eyes meet, she says, “Are you her son?” I say, “Yes” and introduce myself. I ask her for her name and she responds softly, “Ellen Griggs.”

Momma looks at me and says, “What did she say? She speaks so low, I cannot hear her.” She forgets that she is the same way. Her voice is just a whisper. You have to really bend your ear sometimes to hear what momma is saying.

Mrs. Griggs keeps watching intently and looking like she wants to talk. I sense that she needs to tell me something. I oblige her by asking her questions, slowly drawing her out. I am surprised at her recall. She looks so fragile a lady. Her body is bent in the chair. She seems to be very alert however, and starts to talk. Her story begins: She is from around Austin.

“Twenty miles outside of Austin to be exact,” she tells me. She says she ran a bakery there. I ask her what items she baked and she rattles off: “Bread, cakes, doughnuts, pies, you name it.”

“How about kolaches?” I ask. “Oh yes, I made them, too.” I hurriedly repeat this for momma. The fact that we now have two “kolache-makers” at the same table is impressive.

Momma is glad to hear this. Say the word “kolaches,” and there is instant recognition. The foundation of everything in the past. A link with the old times and the old ways.

I ask Mrs. Griggs if she ever lived on a farm. “Oh yes,” she says quickly. “We farmed all our lives. I know about farming. We had cows and chickens and sheep, you name it.

There was never a dull moment.”

This is good to hear, also. Another connection with momma. I relay this to her, and she chuckles. She cannot hear Mrs. Griggs so I have to repeat everything to her. I bend down to her

ear and I talk loud and slow so that she understands. Mrs. Griggs continues to talk. She is lonesome I think and glad to have someone to talk to.

Most of these people are like that.

They just want someone to talk to.

Or . . . to be talked to. Not forgotten.

She has five children, she relates.

Two of whom have already passed away. She is now 86 years old and crippled and bent. She shows me her hands. They are gnarled and bony and twisted. Her right hand is almost frozen. Three fingers on that hand do not work. They are locked in place, rigid and unwavering. She tries to pry them apart, but they will not move. This is the result of a stroke, she tells me. I ask her if she is lefthanded. She smiles when I ask her that. “Yes, I am. Thank goodness, otherwise I would be in a fix.” Her hands tell her story. They have scratched and clawed to seek out an existence. Toiling hard to make a life.

She tells me of her family then.

There were seven sisters and only two boys. Only three are left now.

Two sisters and her. She is the youngest of the three. I ask her if she has family in town. “Yes, my daughter lives here. She is a nurse and takes good care of me. Right now she and her husband are in Lake Tahoe. I used to live with her, but when I fell they decided to put me in a nursing home,” she says. She is so cheerful, I think, despite her problems. The attitude of the old, at least the happy ones, is cheerfulness. The acceptance of life and what it brings you. Adjusting to the circumstances.

Making the most of it, as they say.

This is their secret.

I asked her if she quilts, and she replies “Oh my, yes, I always quilted.

And embroidered,” she adds proudly.

Momma’s ears perk up when she hears this. It has almost become a lost art and a lost word, “Embroidery.” No one does it anymore. I can remember though when the grandparents had doilies on all the furniture. “I used to embroider, too,” says momma, “and quilt.”

These two ladies have much in common, I think. This was the way it was

Lodge 239, Hondo welcomes new member Sechelle Lynn Deleon. Sechelle is nine years old and is the daughter of Michelle Botello and Charles Maxie.

Sechelle’s hobbies include baseball, swimming, basketball, eating, math, and science, and she enjoys watching wrestling. Her favorite female wrestlers are Trish and Ashley. Sechelle attends Woolls School where she is a fourth grader. She is a member of St. John’s Bible School, and she loves to draw. She also enjoys spending time with her parents, grandma Botello, and her cousins.

His hobbies include baseball (Julio has played for seven years), basketball, swimming, and skateboarding. His favorite wrestler is John Cena.

Julio attends Woolls School and is in the fifth grade. He is an altar boy for St. John’s Catholic Church.

back then. Hard and tedious work, but pride in the craft and the outcome. Making things that lasted.

Never wasting a moment or a thing.

Being resourceful. Using what you had. Just like these two are now.

Like intricate doilies, fine and delicate and lasting in their ways. Set out for all to admire.

Finally the meal is served.

Everyone has been waiting. Mrs. Griggs especially seems hungry and wanting to eat. She may have missed breakfast, I think. She says that sometimes they forget about her in her room.

Today, it is Mexican food for lunch. Rice and beans and carne asada with a salad on the side. “What is it?” Mrs. Griggs asks. I tell her it is carne asada, and she frowns ever so slightly. “I don’t think I like that,” she says, but she digs into it anyway.

I watch her as she eats. Seeing if she can eat, with those crippled hands.

Surprisingly, she can and does. She has to really work at it, but she can.

She leans forward in her chair to get close to the plate and then somehow moves her fork slowly toward the food. Slowly, but surely, she manages to get something on her fork and

then slowly and carefully she raises it to her lips. Her hands shake the whole time. Some of the food falls off. She is left with only a morsel.

This is painstaking to watch. She does not flinch however. She follows her process and slowly gets her meal.

Bit by bit, bite by bite. She perseveres.

Momma feeds herself. Luckily, she does not have to do this tedious process. She eats slowly, but deliberately. Once in a while, a crumb will fall in her lap. She always stops and retrieves it. It may take several tries, but she is meticulous in getting each crumb. How she sees them I do not know, but she finds every one. Just like at home, she had a spotless house. No speck or spot went unnoticed. Everything dusted and pol-

ished. Cleanliness was next to Godliness.

Finally, the ladies finish up their food. Dessert is a cobbler. It is thick and gooey and hard to cut—hard to get on the fork. I help them cut it up and place some on their spoons for them so they won’t have to deal with it. They are both grateful. “She forgot to give me coffee,” says Mrs. Griggs as she notices her cup is empty. I tell her I will get her some.

She says she loves her coffee. Just like momma, only she drinks it black.

Their generation was raised on coffee. They must never have had mother’s milk. Coffee was what they were raised on. Night and day. They drink it still. Brown nectar, how it nourishes them. Like mental medicine, it soothes their minds.

Now, we come to the end of the meal. All is done and complete. The dishes are empty across the table.

The glasses and cups used up.

Splotches and stains tell their story on the tablecloth. Pots and pans bang in the kitchen. The help is getting ready to clean up.

Mrs. Griggs turns to me and thanks me for everything. A perfect example of her generation, she is polite and courteous. “Very nice meeting you,” she says, “and thank you for helping me. I hope I can see you again.” I tell her that she can eat with momma at supper. They have much in common. “Farming, and quilting and baking and family!”

And best of all . . . kolaches!”

Such is her life now, Mrs. Griggs.

It was my pleasure meeting her. She has had a long and wonderful life.

Just like momma’s. Filled with fun and action. Fast-moving days of work and accomplishment. Always going. Non-stop. Raising kids and making a home, out of little or nothing. Scrapping and scraping by.

Now the two of them will rest. To take a nap and dream long dreams.

Of distant days and memories.

Now they have the time.

Sometime in the Night

my cozy bed with just a touch upon my head and nestles there as I repose

VĚSTNÍK to make a vision as I close my eyes in slumber and random thought it is the comfort that I sought and so it settles soft yet deep it overcomes me

in my sleep and truth becomes the dream in all which is the dream?

I can’t recall.

To me it seems too much the same in this immortal magic game.

The mind fires up and starts to feel as if in a theater and the reel has started and begun to play the movie of my life today and things fly in and out at will

VĚSTNÍK they make no sense they won’t be still the mind races, rewind, play as if reliving some distant day.

Actors appear from long ago some are friends some not so and places that I once had been come into play and thrive again and all the while there is a scheme the film goes on within the dream.

Images cavort and visions play around my mind in some odd way Who are these ghosts?

What do they want?

Why do they stray from normal haunts and flicker in this film of night What comes of them?

What is their plight?

Where is their home?

Why do they dare Revive in me Why do they care?

I toss and turn I can’t keep still I cannot ban them from my will they know no bounds they come and go they play upon my psyche and soul I sense them faring far from home forgotten memories from long lost poems like black and whites of some sad tale come back to life to no avail.

They leap and spring they fly and flit recalling some old yellowed script and then as sudden as a light they disappear into the night and the wind taps on the window pane and startles me from sleeps disdain Where am I? Who, where and why?

In Memoriam

In Memory of Karel Matejka, Sr.

“Freedom - guard it with your life, America,” often warned well-known Texas Gulf Coast fraternalist and SPJST Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje member Karel Matejka, Sr. of El Campo, Texas, who died Friday, June 2, 2006, on his 83rd birthday.

Karel was Karel Matejka, Sr. only 16 years old when the Vimperk, Sumava, Czechoslovakian Freedom Fighter was imprisoned by the Nazis following Germany’s occupation of the Sudentenland at the beginning of World War II. He spent almost eight years of his youth as a forced laborer in Hitler’s infamous concentration camps.

He was freed in 1946 by General George S. Patton’s United States Army and returned to his Czechoslovakian homeland where he opened a bakery and grocery store.

Karel became outspokenly critical of Post War Russian-imposed Communism that was being forced on the freedom-loving Czechs.

Czechoslovakia’s pre-World War II democratic government had been patterned after the United States of America.

After learning in 1948 that his business was to be nationalized by the Communists and the impending threat of imprisonment again “as an enemy of the State,” Karel and his wife, Gizela, escaped overnight to western Germany.

Bishop John L. Morkovsky learned of their plight as displaced European refugees and arranged for the Matejkas to come to Houston in 1950 under the National Catholic Refugees Program.

Karel and his wife were warmly welcomed into the greater Houston American-Czech community including the old SPJST Lodge 88, Houston on Studewood Drive. He was active in the Houston Sokol movement and other benevolent Slavic organizations such as Western Fraternal Life.

The gifted singer and musician had a vast repertoire of authentic Czech folk songs. The accomplished accordionist and drummer also loved

to polka dance. He formed a Houston band which played at many special celebrations including a downtown El Campo street dance and “All Nations Festival” in 1962 when the city became “Capital of Texas for 24 hours” as designated by “Governor-for-a-Day” Culp Krueger, President Pro Tempore of the Texas Senate at that time and owner of KULP Radio and the El Campo Leader-News-Svoboda.

A member of the SPJST Lodge 88 Choral Group and Drama Club, he was cast in major roles of many Czech language divadlos —theatrical presentations including operettas such as Kmoch’s “Muziky, Muziky” and other entertaining Czechoslovakian dramas and comedies staged at Lodge 88 and in other Texas communities.

Karel was honored in 1999 as one of the founders of the Saints Cyril and Methodius Slavic Heritage Festival, which is one of Houston’s oldest ethnic festivals.

He often expressed his worry that many Americans are apathetic about the precious liberty he and his wife finally enjoyed in Texas.

“We must pay attention or one day, we may lose our freedom here,” cautioned Karel on July 4, 2003, when he single-handedly staged an Independence Day event in El Campo after learning no local public observance was scheduled.

One of his happiest days was on November 12, 1958, when he became a naturalized United States citizen. His Czech citizenship had been revoked by the Communists, but President Vaclav Havel re-instated it in 2000 so Karel held dual citizenship during his final years.

Graveside services for Karel were held on Wednesday, June 7 at Rosewood Memorial Park in Humble, Texas, where his wife, Gizela, was interred in 1993.

He is survived by a son, Karel, Jr. of Huntsville, Texas, and daughters, Barbara Goodwin of Spring, Texas, Dana Phillips of Santa Fe, Texas, and Julia Murphrey who recently moved to Praha, Czech Republic, where she is a language professor and teacher of English.

Expression of Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of Karel Havlicek No. 4, Hallettsville, Texas, on behalf of our entire membership wish to express our sincerest and deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge sister, ARLENE JANE (ZAK) KOEHN, of Weimar, Texas, who passed away on Sunday, May 14, 2006, at the age of 44 years after a 17-month battle with cancer.

She was born on September 7, 1961, in Hallettsville, Texas, to Johnnie and Helen (Galetka) Zak. She enjoyed her childhood growing up in the country and was schooled in Hallettsville ISD. In high school, she played the trumpet, was on the FFA debate team, and excelled in academics. She attended college in Victoria then moved back to Hallettsville to begin working. Later, she worked in Schulenburg, first at the bowling alley then at Baumparten-Matula Hardware Store where she was a much-requested master at mixing paint.

On October 28, 1995, she married Alan Koehn. They enjoyed 10 wonderful years together. She was a member of the Weimar United Church of Christ where she served on the Church Council and worked as Christian Education Chair, overseeing Sunday school, vacation Bible school, and many other youth activities. She also was a member of SPJST Lodge 4, Hallettsville and the Swiss Alp Dance Club.

Arlene is survived by her husband Alan; father and mother, Johnnie and Helen Zak; sister Kathy Smolik and husband Melvin of Hallettsville; sister Jean Wick and husband Edward of Weimar; brother John Zak and wife Ani of Hallettsville; father-in-law Lester Koehn of Weimar; sisters-inlaw Molly Koehn of Austin and Jane Armontrout of Weimar; and brotherin-law Dale Koehn and wife Cindy of Weimar.

Services were held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 16 at the Weimar United Church of Christ with Reverend Dr. Jerry L. Carpenter officiating. Interment, under the direction of Hubbard Funeral Home in Weimar, followed in the New Bielau Cemetery.

May our sister rest in eternal peace.

In memory of Ella Macek Services for Ella Olga Macek, 92, of Rosenberg, who resided at the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 2 in Needville, Texas, were at 11 a.m.

Thursday, June 1, 2006, in the chapel of DavisGreenlawn Funeral Home in Ella Macek Rosenberg, Texas.

Burial followed at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Rosenberg, Texas, with the Reverend Henry Beseda and the Reverend Larry Butcher officiating the services.

Visitation was from 6 to 8 p.m.

Wednesday, May 31 in the stateroom of Davis-Greenlawn Funeral Home in Rosenberg, Texas.

Mrs. Macek died May 28 in the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home in Needville, Texas. She was born in Temple, Texas, on May 7, 1914, to Frank Edward Hejl, Sr. and Emilie (Lesikar) Hejl.

She grew up and attended school and church at Seaton, and graduated from Temple High School. She went to nurse’s training at Memorial Hospital in Houston, Texas, in 1935.

She had desired to be a nurse but was not able to because her hands were sensitive to water. She also attended Draughton’s Business College in Dallas, Texas in 1937.

Ella married Charles Wesley Macek June 24, 1940, in Caldwell, Texas. After making their home in Rosenberg, Fort Hood, and Granger, where they owned a grocery store, they then returned to Rosenberg. She was an excellent cook and homemaker. She worked at the Fort Bend County Library and enjoyed driving the Bookmobile. Her love for reading was very obvious to all.

She was a member of the Rosenberg Brethren Church and was very active with the Christian Sisters organization and served as a board member numerous times and served God in many capacities.

Ella was a former member of SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton Star Hall and received her 50-year pin in 1986.

She was a life member of Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 429 in Rosenberg.

Ella loved reading, fishing, hunting, cooking, canning, entertaining, gardening, and tending flowers and plants. She had a great love of nature,

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Charles (Charlie) Wesley Macek, in 1986; her parents; three brothers; three sisters; numerous brothers and sisters-in-law; two nephews; one great-nephew; and one great-niece.

Ella is survived by sisters, Della Mares of Temple, Texas, and Dorothy Hogan of Nolanville, Texas; niece, Trudy Wood and husband, Don, of Matagorda, Texas; great-nephew,

Duncan Wood of Rosenberg, Texas; along with numerous other loving nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Pallbearers were Robert “Bobby” Hejl, Alvin Hejl, Hank Mares, Danny Mares, Edward Mares, and Leroy Parthum.

Honorary pallbearers are Jerry Mikulas, Jr., Don Wood, Duncan Wood, Glenn Odstrcil, Melton Carver, Rob Hamm, Virgil Macek, Johnny Marek, John Shenkir, Dr. Jack Wilkerson, Jerry Terrill, Ottomer

Schimek, Darden McGlothlin, Chris Corbin, Alan Farrar, and Frank Bryant.

We are selling World’s Finest Chocolate bars for $1 per bar. The chocolate is fabulous. Just ask Nick Sires. He purchased two boxes and passed them out to the children. Then, during the silent auction, he purchased another box for an additional $100.

On Saturday, June 24, we will be selling items in front of the Belton Wal-Mart. We will be selling baked goods and sausage wraps from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. SPJST’s live mascot, Orel the Eagle, will make a public appearance from 11 a.m. to 12 noon, and the teen beseda group will per-

form at 1 p.m. Any donations for the bake sale will be greatly appreciated.

District Two swim party this Saturday in Temple Dear Members, The summer seems to be flying past us. Hope to see you all at our next District Two activity on Saturday, June 24 from 6 to 9 p.m.

We will be swimming at the Summit Pool in Temple. Bring your friends and join us for a fun-filled evening of swimming. Drinks and paper goods will be provided by the district. We ask everyone to provide a snack. All camp chaperones are required to attend a camp training at 6:30 p.m. in the conference room. This meeting is a state requirement for all chaperones. I am still in need of two male chaperones. Let me know as soon as

District Two Camp is less than one month away. By now, all camp forms should have been turned in to me. If not, call me today. I am so excited about camp this year. We have a new camp, some new activities, and new faces. I hope you are all excited to join us. Camp begins on Sunday, July 9 at 2 p.m. and ends on Wednesday, July 12 at 6 p.m. Please notice the times! They are different from previous years. Please keep in touch with the Vestnik to know what to bring and what not to bring.

What a great group of LITs we will have at our camp this year. Each one had an excellent training last weekend at Camp Hammond near Bandera. The camp grounds were beautiful. John, our SYD, had an excellent program for all the LITs. Teamwork was definitely the highlight of the weekend with the chal-

lenge course, the survival challenge, and the group skits. District Five Youth Clean Beaches Saturday, April 29, 2006 • Surfside and Matagorda Beaches Dear Members, District Five youth and adult members cleaned up Surfside and Matagorda Beaches on Saturday, April 29 for the annual beach clean up. Even though it started out as a very gloomy day, we all had a lot of fun. We found all kinds of stuff on the beach including plastic bottles, oil cans, bricks from houses, rope off of boats, paper and plastic cups, chip bags, and five-gallon buckets.

After we cleaned up, they served us hot dogs, chips, soda, and brownies. The brownies were the best!

There is supposed to be another clean-up in the fall, so I can’t wait to get back to the beach.

District Seven Camp June 29 to July 2 WOW Camp Dear District Seven Campers, District Seven Camp will be held at WOW Camp in Bandera, Texas, from Thursday, June 29 to Sunday, July 2, 2006. Camp will begin at 6 p.m. on Thursday and conclude around 11 a.m. on Sunday.

Below is a list of items that each camper needs to bring to camp:

• Clothes for three days of camping (proper attire required.)

• Sleepwear • Swimsuit • Personal items • Toothbrush/toothpaste • Brush or comb • Soap/shampoo • Deodorant • Sunscreen • Bug repellent • Bath towel • Wash cloth • Beach towel • Floaties (for those who need them) • Tennis shoes (flip flops may be worn in the cabin but not to walk around outside) • Comfortable shoes to wear to the pool that have closed toes. Water shoes would be best.

• Pair of old tennis shoes and old clothes that may not come clean.

(They will get wet and dirty.)

• Flashlight • Sheets for twin bed • Light blanket or sleeping bag • Pillow • Any medicine that you may need (Must be checked in with the nurse

Lodge 1 Fayetteville youth: things to do this summer

Wow! School is finally out.

But what to do? Don’t worry. I’ll guide you through a summer you and your friends won’t forget.

Turn it into a summer fun games day! When you have the game day, you can prepare some yummy snacks. Make it a fun party!

Smoothies - blend in a blender ice, six tablespoons of vanilla yogurt, three bananas, and five strawberries. Serves about four people.

For cute decoration, cut up a lemon (or as many as it takes) and push it on the side of the cup. Buy some little umbrellas at Wal-Mart and poke one into the lemon slice that is on the cup.

For a Good Fruity Snack An ocean scene—my own idea . . . that I know of—first get a platter or serving tray. You don’t want it to be too big unless you have a lot of fruit. First, place blueberries all over the tray. They represent water. Then get a few bananas and

place them on the tray whole. The curved parts should be facing up.

These will represent boats. Next, get as many strawberries as you want. (Depends on the size of the tray.) Cut the leaves off. From the top where you cut the leaves off, slice downward. For eyes, you can get Florida’s Natural Fruit Nuggets. They are delish! Poke them in the strawberry at the fat side with tooth picks. You can use all different sorts of fruit for fish or seaweed.

You can use mandarin oranges, kiwis, slices of water melon, and cantaloupe. Have fun and let your creativity flow!

Lodge 1 Fayetteville Youth Club busy with activities SPJST Lodge 1, Fayetteville Youth Club has been busy! In April, we had our Second Annual Appreciation Day. We played volleyball, card games, and dominoes. We also had guessing games, door prizes, a silent auction, and horseshoes for the adults. We had a meal of barbecue, side dishes, and tons of desserts!

On Join Hands Day, we planned to work on the SPJST ballfield (which is

on the grounds of the recently restored SPJST hall). It rained, so instead of working on the ballfield, we uncrated new chairs and tables and set them up.

At noon, barbecue sandwiches were served.

Our May meeting was held at the SPJST ballfield. We elected officers.

Lodge 4, Hallettsville Welcomes New Youth Club Member

MORGAN SCOTT Lodge 4, Hallettsville welcomes Morgan Traci Scott, age five, to the youth club. She is the daughter of Phelan and Robin Scott and the granddaughter of Diane Hadley, all of Hallettsville.

Morgan is in kindergarten at Hallettsville Elementary School.

She attended her first SPJST meeting on June 11, 2006.

Lodge 6 Cottonwood Youth Club meets June 24 Dear Readers, We held our meeting on Sunday, June 11. It was discussed to meet at the lodge at 6 p.m. on Saturday, June 24 to decorate and set up for District Three YAD. The youth club will go to Sea World on July 28 and 29. Our next meeting will be July 14 to get ready for the annual picnic.

I want to thank our youth leader for the graduation meal at the West Station Steak House.

Lodge 25, Ennis youth receives medals Dear Vestnik Readers, I rode in the National Polka Festival Parade on the SPJST Float. I rode in the front of the float.

We went to Margaret’s house for the June youth club meeting.

Margaret gave us a ride on the golf cart. I saw some lovely birds in their nest at her house. They were so cute.

They were chirping a lot.

Two weekends ago, I got two medals—one medal for dancing for the past three years and the other medal was for gymnastics (Sokol Slet). I got eighth place in my age group. This was my first Sokol Slet.

Momma and Daddy got chiggers there, but Misty and I did not. I am glad that I didn’t get them. Momma sure is scratching a lot!

Under old business, everyone was thanked who helped with the AdoptA-Highway project. Also, YAD cards are due at this meeting. District Six Camp is June 22 to 24 at Camp Lone Star in La Grange. The campers are to meet in Taiton at 3 p.m. for departure.

Under new business, it was reported that the Statewide Barbecue CookOff is going to be held on July 14 and 15. District Six will be having a bowling tournament on August 26 at the El Campo Bowling Center in El Campo, Texas, from 12 noon to 5 p.m.

The District Six Fall Meeting will be held in Hillje on October 8 with the El Campo/Hillje lodge hosting.

Poems were read, and door prizes were exchanged.

Lodge 9, Snook Youth Member Receives Stock Show Honors Congratulations to Lodge 9, Snook Youth Club member Josef Orsak. Josef placed third at the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo on February 16 and 17 with his Yorkshire pig.

At the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo on March 16 and 17, Josef received another third place award with a Yorkshire pig.

Josef is an eighth grader in Snook ISD. He is 12 years old and the son of Bill and Sheila Orsak.

Lodge 84, Dallas youth ready for YAD Dear Readers, The Lodge 84, Dallas Youth Club will hold its monthly meeting on Monday, June 19 at 6:30 p.m. I hope you have plans to attend.

Lodge 88, Houston Youth Club elects officers

Sunday, June 4 was the date for the Lodge 88 Homecoming Dinner/Dance. The youth club was involved in selling that famous, delicious, homemade ice cream. The cool treat was a hit, as always.

On Saturday, June 10, our youth club met for a social at Incredible Pizza, located in north Houston.

Thanks to Lodge 88 Youth Leader Mrs. Linney-Gonzales and Mrs. Wockenfuss. We had a great time eating and playing all those challenging games.

On Sunday, May 21, 2006, the members of Lodge 88, Houston Youth Club met to discuss the various upcoming events for the summer.

So mark your calendars for Sunday, July 9 for YAD. This year, Lodge 88 will be the host. I hope to see all those bright faces of the members

Lodge 183 Arlington Youth Club reports on June meeting Dear Vestnik Readers, The June 10, 2006, meeting of SPJST Lodge 183, Arlington Youth Club was called to order at 12:45 a.m. by President Katie Weeks.

Matt Moody led the Pledge of Allegiance and the SPJST Youth Club Motto. Members remained standing for a moment of silent prayer.

The register was read. Present were 13 members, three guests, and three adults. We introduced our guests and prospective new members, Amanda, Matt, and Amy Moody.

Katelyn Daniel gave the treasurer’s report. This month’s fund-raising plan continues to be cashing in aluminum cans. The youth club will also continue collecting aluminum can pull tabs for the Ronald McDonald House in Fort Worth. We will once again plan to take a tour of the facility and have a meeting in one of its conference rooms.

Our youth leader, Kay Weeks, thanked everyone for coming to participate in our lock-in and scrapbook workshop. We had a great turn-out and got a lot done on the scrapbook.

She distributed the new 2006-2007 youth club handbooks to everyone.

Some of our youth members attended the National Polka Festival Parade in Ennis where State Queen Rachel Hunter and State King Nick Culliton, along with State Duchess Amanda Jurik and State Duke Chris Johnson, made an official SPJST appearance.

Accent (stress) and Intonation

In this lesson, we will discuss some rules and guides to speaking correct Czech, and using stress and intonation.

1. In Czech, the accent is invariably on the first syllable: PRÁ-ce, SKÁkat, ŠKO-la.

2. In the case of three or more syllables, there is a secondary accent on the third syllable: PRÁ-co-VÁ-ti, VZDĚ-la-VÁ-ti, zA-palo-VÁ-ti.

3. One syllable prepositions form one single unit with the word following, and are always accented: Do Prahy (doprahy), po válce (poválce).

4. If the preposition consists of only one consonant — v, z, s, k, —it must be joined in a single sound with the word following k vám kvám — not ke vám: V Novém Yorku (not ve Novém Yorku).

5. Before other groups of consonants these prepositions are said in full and accented: VE středu, KE mně, SE mnou, ZE školy.

6. Prepositions are pronounced in full if the word following begins with the same sound: VE Vídni, KE kostelu, SE sestrou, ZE země. The reason for this is because double consonants are pronounced as single consonants in Czech: (Anna, cenný).

A double vv or double kk are no pronounceable. However, in a word like nejjemnější, the two j’s are separated because nej is a superlative prefix.

a short vowel following it, and we must not yield to the temptation to stress long vowels outside the first syllable. The length or shortness of a vowel has no bearing on the stress.

8. Stress is not as strongly marked in Czech as in English, German, or Russian. The intonation (melody of the speech—its “musicalness”), that is, the rise and fall in the pitch of the voice, is not made up from as many tunes and patterns as in the above three languages. The voice does not rise to as high a pitch, nor does it fall low as readily as in the above languages. In these respects, the Czech language, may be said to be rather “flat” and monotone in character.

9. The outstanding feature of Czech speech is the contrast between long and short vowels, alternating in succession, giving it rather staccato character.

10. Finally, this rule should probably be observed: if you’re not sure which syllable is to be accented, don’t accent any; this will be better than stressing the wrong one. Don’t worry too much about stresses and intonation at this point, but make it a part of each lesson as we move along. * * *
