Let’s Join Hands on May 6!

t’s a day of doing something good. It’s a day of celebrating fraternalism. It’s Join Hands Day, and it’s coming up on Saturday, May 6!

Congratulations and thanks to the lodges and youth clubs around the state who have committed to a project. SPJST will make an impact on May 6 in many communities across Texas.

As of printing, 15 lodges and youth clubs have informed the Home Office of their Join Hands Day plans and are receiving $100 grants from SPJST to assist them with these projects. If your lodge or youth club is planning a Join Hands Day project, please contact the Home Office for details on how you can still receive your $100 grant for the project.

Join Hands Day is the only national day of service that specifically helps develop relationships between generations as they do good works in local communities. Youths and adults work together, on an equal basis, as they plan, organize and implement the day’s activities. The day is sponsored

by America’s fraternal benefit societies, in conjunction with the Points of Light Foundation and Volunteer Center National Network.

Participants learn firsthand how Join Hands Day: • creates wonderful connections between generations.

• provides opportunities to improve neighborhoods and facilities.

• raises the visibility and image of their organizations.

• energizes fraternal chapters, clubs, civic organizations and church ministries.

• exhibits the caring aspects of participating groups.

• introduces them to new friends.

Some of the projects that SPJST lodges and youth clubs are sponsoring are:

Lodge 1, Fayetteville Rebuilding baseball field, including dirt work, painting and clean-up.

Lodge 13, Dime Box An all-out effort to refurbish the lodge hall which doubles as the community center; includes carpentry and clean-up.

Lodge 17, New Tabor Clean-up of the 100-year-old New Tabor Cemetery in preparation for the annual memorial service to be held on site.

Lodge 141, Sealy Lodge members of all ages will work to clean up and replant the flower beds at the Gordon Memorial Library. The project will include replacing landscape timbers.

Lodge 24, Cyclone Clean-up of the old pioneer cemetery, including the planting of trees and placing of flowers at all grave sites.

Lodge 48, Beyersville Lodge adult and youth members will combine their efforts with the members of the St. Paul Lutheran Church and conduct a food drive.

Lodge 87, Temple Lodge adult and youth members will be joining with the adult and youth members of the First Christian Church in Temple to clean up the property and repair the home of a deserving elderly woman.

Lodge 246, Morgan’s Point Adult and youth members will pressure wash the Belton Senior Activity Center building and driveway, paint the building’s wood trim, doors and benches, replace curb stops and shampoo the carpet.

And, that’s just in Districts One and Two! Stay tuned next week for more exciting projects!

Lion’s Park in Temple, Texas off Midway Drive and Hickory Road Core Challenge • $2 Entry Fee*

*All entry fees benefit District Two Youth Fund.

Core Challenge presents seven individual events that test both strength and agility.

HERCULES CHALLENGE: The participant moves five heavy objects 30 feet. This is a timed event.

LOG THROW: The participant throws a log for distance.

BENT ARM SOLDIER HANG: The participant hangs from a bar with his/her arms bent as long as possible.

SLED PULL: The participant will be put in a harness and will pull a weighted sled 100 feet. This is a timed event.

AGILITY COURSE: The participant will run around, through, and over objects as fast as he/she can.

SPRINT RACE: The participant will sprint in 100-yard dash.

FOOTBALL THROW: The participant will throw for distance and accuracy.

Boy and Girl Division Age Groups 5-8 Division • 9-11 Division • 12-14 Division 15 to High School Senior Division First, second, and third place medals will be awarded in each age group.

District Three Spring Meeting this Sunday at Lodge 154, Fort Worth Dear Members and Friends, Please join us for the District Three Spring Meeting this Sunday, April 23, 2006. Hosting the meeting will be Lodge 154, Fort Worth.

The day will include a business meeting, lunch, contests, fun, and fellowship. Contests will include adult horseshoe pitching and Czech Egg Decorating Contest Kraslice; and for the youth, washer throwing as well as Czech Egg Decorating Contest Kraslice.

Registration for the meeting and adult/youth contests will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. The business meeting begins at 11 a.m.

The meeting will adjourn for

lunch at approximately 12 noon.

Lunch will include seasoned chicken breasts, parsley potatoes, corn, green beans, bread, coffee, tea, and dessert.

The cost for adults and children is $6 per plate. However, for a donation of five non-expired canned goods per member, the meal is free.

The meeting will reconvene at approximately 1 p.m.

Immediately following the business meeting, the contests and fun begin!

The meeting will be held at the Communications Workers of America Local 6200 Building, located at 3424 Barnett Road in Wichita Falls. Registration will be from 10:30 a.m. to 12 noon.

Through the end of March, the SPJST received 1,062 applications for insurance certificates. The goal of the Action ’06 membership drive is 2,625 applications written.

In conjunction with SPJST’s Action ’06 program, local lodges have been assigned application goals for the year.

The lodge goal has been based largely on past performance and perceived potential.

SPJST Scholarship Fund

SPJST’s 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive for 2005-2006 began on October 1, 2005. There have been many donations made to this year’s drive. Donations to date are $8,945.

SPJST Memorial donations to date are $4,390. Thank you for your generous donations to the SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive. Because of your generosity, many young SPJST members will be able to attend or continue with college.

This concludes the 2005-2006 SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Any donations received Drive. between now and October will be added to the new drive that starts October 1, 2006. Once again, thank you for all your many donations.

Guidelines for Giving 1. Donations made by lodges out of lodge funds will be listed as a lodge donation.

2. Collected donations from a lodge meeting will be listed individually by member’s last name in alphabetical order. Individuals submitting a donation will also be listed by member’s last name alphabetically.

3. Gifts of $50 or more will be printed in bold.

4. Families or groups, which desire names, listed under a particular last name or group name should indicate this on the donation form or letter, otherwise, the names will be listed as individual donations by last name in alphabetical order.

5. 100 pennies donations made as a memorial will be listed under memorial donations in a separate listing.

6. Please print donor’s name(s) clearly.

Lodge 6 Cottonwood, Inc. reports on annual meeting Hi! President Brother Johnnie Krizan, called the meeting to order on Sunday, April 2, 2006, at 3:30 p.m.

Brother Johnnie thanked the West Boy Scouts for displaying the American flags today along the front of our lodge.

Vice President Brother Robert Dobecka was unable to attend today.

Secretary Sister Barbara Hykel read the minutes from the last meeting, which were approved as read. There was no correspondence.

Treasurer Brother George Straten gave his report, which was approved as given. The Audit Committee reported books all good and in order.

The budget from the charitable contribution committee was allocated as recommended in the amount of $1,100 for 2006.

It was then time for election of officers. Brother Jerry Kucera was nice enough to take over. All officers were elected by acclamation, with the exception of Treasurer Brother

George Straten.

Brother George Straten is now retiring from that position, so the lodge is in need of a treasurer and hall manager. A nominating committee of Raymond Marek, Milton Peterson, and Al Soukup were appointed to have the authority to appoint an interim treasurer and hall manager until their next meeting.

Lodge 6 Cottonwood reports on April meeting Hi! Brother Milton Peterson, President, called our meeting to order on Sunday, April 2 at 2 p.m. Thanks to Anna Dulock for leading all in the Pledge of Allegiance and to Christi Sparkman for reciting the SPJST Motto.

There was a moment of silence for all departed members. Sister Georgie Soukup, Flag Bearer/Guide, gave her report of 52 members and one guest present. She also reported eight

Brother Milton called upon Sister Barbara Jean Hykel, Secretary, for the reading of the minutes from our last meeting. The minutes were approved as read with one minor correction.

SPJST Insurance Department Honors District Two Sales Agents with Banquet

Congratulations to District Two Sales Agents, pictured above, for achieving their insurance goals in 2005.

The agents were honored with a banquet at Ratibor Country Grill in Ratibor, Texas, on Monday, April 10.

Hosting the banquet were District Two State Field Representative Zachary Kramer, seated, far left; Supreme Lodge Vice President Gene McBride, standing, far left; and District Two Director Bobby Wuensche standing, far right.

There was some correspondence of a thank you note from the family of Alvin Pavlas. There was a very nice letter from Tom Pearson, Executive Director of ARC of McLennan County, regarding the donations given from our lodge.

Our treasurer, Sister Peggy Dobecka, gave her report, which was approved as given. Sister Peggy, as Youth Leader, also gave the youth report. She reported cakes were taken to the rest home on March 1 and again on April 5. The youth have been working on their Easter crafts to be delivered to the rest home on April 9.

Sister Peggy also mentioned that Join Hands Day was May 6. The youth and mother lodge will work together.

The Easter egg hunt was after this meeting, which all the children enjoyed. They also gave a nice Easter program. The youth thanks all who donated or purchased tickets for their door prize drawings. There were lots of nice prizes won.

Brother George Straten, Financial Secretary and Hall Manager, gave his report. He had nothing to report from the Home Office, but there was one transfer from Lodge 54. Socials for May will be May 5 and 19. There will

be a trustee’s meeting at the hall on May 19. Those of you with raffle prizes, please let Al Soukup or Milton Peterson know by this time. Our next lodge meeting will be on Sunday, May 7.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator, Sister Barbara Hykel, mentioned that the upcoming horseshoe tournament will be in Waco on May 20. Watch your Vestnik for details. She also mentioned that Milton Peterson and Al Soukup attended the State 42 Domino Tournament at Lodge 48, Beyersville, coming in at fourth place.

The Sunshine Committee, Sister Jerelene Lenart, had nothing to report at this time.

Sister Stella Perez, Contributions Committee Member, is mailing a check to the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum (LAM) and also a check to the Leroy Volunteer Fire Department.

the Lifetime Achiever Award at the District Three Meeting at Lodge 154, Fort Worth on April 23. The recipients of this award will be Raymond Marek, Mary Marek, Mary Pavlas, Irene Schiemenz, and Bobby Hykel.

Congratulations to these folks! The award will be presented to the recipient at our lodge if that person cannot attend the District Three meeting.

Brother Milton Peterson brought up our upcoming picnic in July, making sure all committees were ready.

The committees remained the same with one exception. Brother Aubrey Uptmor will be joining Ernest Bezdek and Milton Peterson in obtaining auction items.

Sister Peggy Dobecka, Youth Leader, read a letter from Lakn Dieterich asking for a donation from the mother lodge to help sponsor her in the USA Spirit Cheer Team in Germany. The lodge voted to give her $100 and wish her the best of luck.

Birthdays for April in attendance were Brother George Straten and Sisters Jerelene Lenart and Irene Peterson. Keith Hykel also has a birthday in April, but he was not present. We all wish each of these folks a happy birthday and to all with a birthday this month.

Door prizes were then drawn with the $5 door prize winner being Henry Blahuta. Congratulations! Progressive door prize winners were Bryan L. Alexander and John F. Malina (both not present).

Lodge 17 New Tabor plans Join Hands Day project The Lodge 17, New Tabor meeting was called to order by President Randy Gaas at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 2, 2006. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all. Vice President Hildebrand asked all members attending to sign in.

The resolution for Cecil Harlien was given by Susan Skrabanek.

Secretary Ben Trcalek read the minutes for our last meeting. Minutes were approved as read.

Correspondence was a receipt of the 2006 beer license for the hall.

Holly Narro reported upcoming events such as the State Horseshoe Tournament and Join Hands Day cemetery clean-up. Our Join Hands Day project is in conjunction with the New Tabor Cemetery Association and the CSA Lodge 277. This is an open invitation. Anyone interested is asked to be at the cemetery at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 6. Many hands make light work.

Susan Skrabanek gave the youth club report on the youth’s summer activities (i.e. YAD forms, rule books, and the charity event).

Susan Skrabanek also gave a report on the hall account.

Old business focused on confirming plans for the upcoming 50-year pin celebration. The celebration will be at 2 p.m. on May 7 with a cake and punch reception. We will be recognizing 18 individuals.

Lodge 18, Elgin members win contests President Ray opened the meeting of Lodge 18, Elgin with the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silent prayer for all SPJST members. Roll call had all officers present. Dotia read the minutes.

They were approved as read.

Theresa gave the treasurer’s report. Joyce gave the youth report.

Lodge 18 had two winners in the tee-shirt contest: Ages 6 to 8—T. J. Anderson and Ages 9 to 11— Mikhaila Nelson. Great job! We are proud of you. The youth participated in the Easter Egg Decorating Contest - Kraslice at the District Two Spring Meeting. Charlie Anderson won first place. Great job, and thanks to all the youth who decorated eggs, and that goes for the adults, also. Several brought decorated eggs to the district meeting. The youth are selling candles to help raise money. They will have an Easter egg hunt on Saturday, April 15 at 10 a.m.

Aleen gave her report. She stressed the importance to participate in Join Hands Day. We should make plans now to do something with the

youth. Remember, the Vestnik has all important dates listed. Theresa gave the ticket report for Gladys. We missed you, Gladys. We hope to see you next month.

Irene gave the rental report. Our next rentals are April 1 and April 22.

Lodge 79 Corpus Christi welcomes new member Lodge 79, Corpus Christi welcomes its newest member, Meredith Marie Majek. She is the daughter of Ronnie and Pamela Majek and the granddaughter of Mrs. Frank (Margaret) Majek. Meredith’s father and grandmother are also members of Lodge 79. Meredith’s late grandfather, Frank Majek, was with the famous Majek’s Orchestra.

Roll call cited all officers present.

Trustees were all present, except Allen Bacak.

Special Presentation Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek presented Edmund Kana with the Lifetime Achiever Award.

Also, he provided information about the Texas state reports from the SPJST Home Office in Temple. Mr. Vanicek presented our lodge with the facts and figures report.

The special guest speaker was Kathy Rivas of Community Home Health with the El Campo Memorial Hospital. She provided information and answered questions pertaining to home health issues.

Secretary Debbie Sczech read the minutes from the March 12 meeting.

Ben Svoboda made the motion to accept the minutes as read, seconded

by J.C. Kocurek. Motion passed.

Communications were read by Secretary Debbie Sczech. Received were a thank you letter for the library donation; acknowledgements of memorial scholarship donations for Antonio Paul and Carol Koenig; an

Ardis Bacak reported that the District Six Spring Meeting on March 26 was very rewarding. Our lodge will accept the invitation to host the District Six Fall Meeting on October 8.

The treasurer’s report was prepared by Lorraine Kana.

FAC Dee Floyd thanked everyone for bringing desserts. May will be a potluck meal. Members are asked to bring a covered dish. Desserts will be furnished by the lodge.

The audit committee had no report.

The youth leader reported that the children decorated and handed out Easter eggs to the members.

Congratulations to Craig Cerny and Ashley Sczech for placing first with their decorated Easter eggs at the district meeting.

Sales agents’ reports were given.

The nominating committee had no report.

Bingo Committee Betty Sander reported that the jackpot went out this past Monday night. Sheldon reported that the quarterly report taxes are due.

There is no bingo on the following dates: May 29; July 3; September 4; and December 25.

Snack bar had no report.

Hall Rental Chairman Tria Svatek had no new activity to report.

Bookings are May 5 and 6; May 13 Wharton County Junior College voting; May 19 and 20; May 26 and 27; June - booked for the month; July 28 and 29; August 4 and 5; and August 18 and 19.

District Six Cemetery Chairman Vlasta Bartos had no report.

Mowing committee stated that the yard was mowed.

The scholarship committee reported that they received 15 applications for scholarships. The committee will finalize applications today.

Trustees J.C. Kocurek reported that Carmen and J.C. Kocurek did make repairs in the front lobby. They also installed the fan in the kitchen.

They also did outside chores/repairs that were needed.

New members/annuities or additional add-on to certificates include: Jose Enriquez, Sr., Karolyne Brown, Chris and Linda Garcia, Amy Castillo, and Weston Brown. A motion was made by Edmund Kana and seconded by Dee Floyd to accept these new members. The motion carried.

Lodge 47, Seaton reports on April meeting Dear Brothers and Sisters, The regular meeting of Lodge 47, Seaton was held on April 2, 2006, at 2 p.m. with President Edwin Pechal opening the meeting. Flag Bearers Jerry Pechal and Josef Morris brought in the flags and led the assembled in the Pledge of Allegiance. We remained standing to honor the memories of deceased members: Billy Joe Billeck, Sr., Ruby L. Bolton, and Joe Jim Kohut who had all passed away this past week. May they all rest in eternal peace, and sincerest sympathies are being expressed to the surviving families.

A special visitor graced our meeting — Supreme Lodge President Brother Brian Vanicek.

Those mentioned on the sick list were Brother Louis Kohutek and George Pavelka. There may be others that we were not aware of but get well wishes to all concerned.

Officers’ Reports The president thanked the helpers who set up tables and chairs for the Trans-Texas Corridor meeting held recently. Three candidates for Texas Governor were present.

The vice president stated a work day is set for Saturday, May 13.

FAC Amanda Greger reported about the Bloomin’ Temple Festival.

Treasurer David Coufal reported on the excellent month of receipts for March.

Then, Patsy Koslovsky and David Pechal gave the kitchen and bar sales.

We then presented 50-year pins to those present: Evelyn Wells, Nelda Marek, Judy Pechal, Patsy Koslovsky, Becky Sutter, and Frank Klinkovsky (accepting the pin for his son, Frank Klinkovsky, Jr.). Brother Vanicek told of the things and events that happened in 1956, and he also had each say a few words to the

crowd. He also commented how well we conduct our meetings and that he needs to come video it sometimes to show some others how it should be done. Thanks, Brother Vanicek, and please come again soon.

A beautiful cake was made for the honorees which was cut for the lunch that followed.

Those celebrating birthdays in April were Helen Wiley and Ruth Kohutek.

Willie and Adeline Kohutek will celebrate their 61 wedding anniversary on April 19.

Congratulations!

Ruth Hanusch stated that the “42” tournament had 30 teams playing, and all four games played at Beyersville on Saturday.

Door prizes that Brother Vanicek brought from the Home Office were won by Dan Wiley, Edwin Marek, Nelda Marek, and Paul Sutter. Bar drink winners were James Skrabanek, Monroe Lucko, and Becky Sutter.

We enjoyed some pork chops and other good food for the lunch and the cake and some pies. Delicious!

The youth presented the flag and led the Pledge of Allegiance and club motto.

Secretary Dana McAdams read the minutes of the February 19 meeting, and they were approved as read.

Sister Dana McAdams read correspondence from Supreme Lodge Secretary-Treasurer Lanita Anglin concerning the 990 and 990T IRA forms.

Sister Darlene Engelke read the minutes of that meeting. The board has changed its meeting to 2 p.m.

Sister Janie Dujka gave the Entertainment Committee report.

FAC Sister Mary Alice Langlotz read a letter for March from State FAC Michael Morris listing upcoming tournaments and events. Sister Mary Alice thanked the Entertainment Committee for the wonderful lunch they prepared for the State Straight Domino Tournament. She also reminded members of Join Hands Day on May 6. The State Horseshoe Tournament will be held at the Jimmy Bryant Complex on May 20.

Sister Dorothy Veselka gave the Cheer and Condolence report. She sent a sympathy card to Janey Fall on the death of her husband, John Fall.

Get well cards were sent to Alton Hanus and Margaret Narovec. Sister Dorothy also congratulated Jodie and Dana McAdams on their 25th wedding anniversary on March 2.

On April 15, the youth will be attending the SPJST Easter Eggstravaganza in Temple. The youth will decorate eggs for the Easter Egg Decorating Contest Kraslice. The youth will go bowling on March 25 at 2 p.m. at Westview Bowling Lanes. At the April 30 meeting, the youth will have an Easter egg hunt at the lodge. The youth discussed the May meeting, and it will be changed to a later date.

Many thanks to the youth for the cute green mugs they presented to the members for St. Patrick’s Day. Sister Debbie Galler asked for a donation to be made to the Susan B. Komen - Race for the Cure which will be held on April 8 at Heritage Square.

Lodge 66 received a plaque for winning the Platinum Award.

President John Engelke reminded members of the deadline for the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive.

Lodge 66 has made a very generous donation to the fund and to the Gladys Yates Endowment Fund.

Sister Diana Engelke gave the bookkeeping report.

New Business Under new business, Daniel Roznovsky announced information about the Gold Award that our lodge received at the recent SPJST Awards Banquet in Killeen. We will be submitting an application for a quote on liability insurance for lodges through SPJST. President Ann Pustejovsky is currently taking bids for hall cleaning.

A decision will be made at a later date after further discussions are held.

Also under new business, Kenneth Cepak reported that since there are no deals to be had in the energy business at this time, we would not be making any changes to our energy provider.

There was some discussion about the status of the machines during bingo.

The door prize was won by Jerry Mikus, Sr. Family social night will be held on Friday, March 31. Daniel Roznovsky will be providing fried fish and members are asked to bring side dishes and/or desserts.

Our next lodge meeting will be on Monday, April 10 at 7 p.m.

Lodge 230 Midland: proud sponsor of troop celebration SPJST Lodge 230, Midland is a proud sponsor of Operation Support Our Troops, to be held Friday, April 21, 2006, from 6 to 10 p.m. at Ector County Coliseum in Odessa, Texas.

Operation Support Our Troops is held in memory of George H. O’Brien, Jr., Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient.

The event, sponsored by Soldiers of Today and Yesterday, features Grammy Award winners and country and western singers Marty Stuart and Darryl Worley. Daryl Worley is famous for his hit “Have You Forgotten” dedicated to the United

We, the members of the Resolution Committee of Hvezda Texasu No. 47 Seaton, Texas, on behalf of our membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed lodge brother, JOE JIM KOHUT. Services for Joe Jim Kohut, 81, of Temple were at 2 p.m., Monday, April 3, 2006, at Seaton Brethren Church with the Reverend Al Newby and the Reverend Joe Emerson officiating.

Burial was in Seaton Cemetery.

Mr. Kohut died Friday, March 31 in a Temple hospital.

He was born in Cyclone to Joe F. Kohut and Frances Chudej Kohut.

He attended rural schools in east Bell County. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He worked as a nurse’s assistant at the Olin E. Teague Veterans’ Center in Temple.

He was a member of Seaton Brethren Church, treasurer in the Seaton Men’s Brotherhood, and as director and vice president of the Seaton Cemetery Association. He was a member of SPJST Lodge 47, W.O.W Lodge 0016, American Legion Post No. 133 in Temple and F.L.I.C. of

Expression of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge 17, Novy Tabor, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our deepest sympathies to the family of our departed lodge brother, CECIL M. HARLIEN, age 76, who passed away on Thursday, March 2, 2006, at his residence in Caldwell, Texas.

Brother Harlien was born April 18, 1929, in Evant, Texas, to Rufus Walter and Minnie May (Raye) Harlien. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Caldwell.

Cecil accepted Jesus at the age of 13 and was baptized in Popolote Creek near Skidmore, Texas. He moved to Caldwell from Crosby, Texas, in 1970. On February 8, 1975, he was married to Viola Davis. Mr. Harlien was retired from the oil industry and was a rancher. He was a lifetime and very active member of the Burleson County Go Texan Association, the Burleson County Fair Association, a past master and member of the Warren Masonic Lodge 56 of Caldwell, the York Rite, Scottish Rite, and a member of the Shrine. He was a member of SPJST Lodge 17, New Tabor. He loved and enjoyed people and working with horses.

Survivors include his wife, Viola Harlien of Caldwell; sons and daughters-in-laws, Mel and Phyllis Harlien of Grandbury and Dane and Debbie Harlien of Crosby; and daughter and son-in-law, Rhonda and Jim Prokupek of Crosby; stepson and daughter-in-law, Murphy and Bonnie Davis of Wichita Falls; stepdaughter ans son-in-law, Pat and Tommy Novosad, and stepdaughter-in-law Jan Davis, all of Caldwell; 15 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers; four sisters; and stepson, Jim Ed Davis.

Funeral services for Brother Harlien were held on Saturday,

March 4 at Strickland Funeral Home with the Reverend Steven Johnson officiating.

Burial was in the Masonic Cemetery in Caldwell.

Serving as pallbearers were J.W. Sebesta, Bubba Mantey, Brent Harlien, Truett and Trey Novosad, Heath and Michael Harlien, Brad, Colby, Murphy, and Shawn Davis, Scott Graham, and Steve Green.

Honorary pallbearers were members of the J.D. Watson Sunday School Class of the First Baptist Church in Caldwell.

In Memory of Johnny L. Adamek Johnny L. Adamek, 74, a loving husband, father, grandfather, greatgrandfather and friend, went to be with our Lord in heaven, on Friday, January 13, 2005, in Arlington.

Funeral services were at BeanMassey-Burge Johnny Adamek with the burial held at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery.

Johnny was born in Taylor on May 15, 1931, to John and Adela Adamek.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Johnny was married to the love of his life for 52 years, and together they raised four children and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Johnny was a retiree from Bell Helicopter, a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus, and an active member of SPJST Lodge 183.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy; daughter, JoAnn Garner and husband, Rob; son, Johnny; daughter, Renee Perkins and husband, Duke; son, Randy Adamek; seven grandchildren; one great-

grandchild; one brother; and two sisters.

In Memory of Johnny Zalobny Funeral services for Johnny William “Zeke” Zalobny, 63, of the Deanville community, were held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, November 15, 2005, at Strickland Funeral Home Chapel in Caldwell with Reverend Henry Beseda officiating Burial followed in the San Antonio Prairie Cemetery. Visitation began at 2 p.m. on Monday, November 14 at the funeral home.

Mr. Zalobny died Saturday, November 12 in St. Joseph Regional Health Center in Bryan.

He was born October 15, 1942, in Chriesman, the son of William Edward and Mary Rose (Repa) Zalobny. He was a lifelong resident of Burleson County and was selfemployed.

He was a member of the Sons of Hermann Lodge 801 in Deanville and SPJST Lodge 186, Caldwell.

He enjoyed country music and riding around in his truck. He was wellknown for the barbecue he made.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Mary Frances Smotek.

Survivors include his life companion, Lillian Faust; brother and sisterin-law, Rudolph W. and Rosalie Zalobny of Deanville; three nephews; and three nieces.

Pallbearers who served were Rodney Zalobny, Bernard Ofczarzak, Charles Barak, Michael Albright, Earl Robinson, and George Jancik.

Honorary pallbearers were Jack Churchill, Lancier Brinkman, Richard Zgabay, Don Dunn, Buster Brinkman, Larry Charanza, Gary and Raymond Zboril, John Hare, Clint Luksa, and Devin Ryan.

Expression of Sympathy On behalf of our SPJST Lodge 169, Brenham, we would like to express our sympathy to the family of our Sister, SOPHIE BARBARA ZIENTEK, age 80, who died on March 10, 2006, at Trinity Care Center. She was born on April 11, 1925, in Brenham, Texas, to John and Frances Bilski Zientek. She was baptized on April Sophie Zientek 12 by Monsignor C h a r l e s Wisnerowski at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Her sponsors were Joseph Bilski and Pelagia Merski. Her first communion was on October 25, 1935. She was confirmed May 2, 1936, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

Ms. Zientek attended St. Mary’s Catholic School.

Ms. Zientek is preceded in death by her parents; and sister and brotherin-law, Mary and Stanley Januszewski.

She is survived by brothers Stanley Zientek of Whitney, Alois and wife Regina Zientek of Brenham, Julian and wife Delia of Swanee, Oklahoma, Monsignor Benedict Zientek of Brenham, Monsignor Boleslaus Zientek of Houston; numerous nieces, nephews, greatnieces, and great-nephews.

Rosary was held Sunday evening, March 12 at Brenham Memorial Chapel at 7 p.m. Funeral mass was Monday morning, March 13 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

Monsignors Benedict Zientek, Boleslaus, Harry Mazurkiewicz and Benedict Mazurkiewicz served as celebrants. Burial was at Calvary Catholic Cemetery beside her loved ones.

Pallbearers were Patrick Zientek, David Majewski, Paul Bilski, Mark Januszewski, Otto Bilski, and Pat Majewski.

Memorials may be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church; Hospice Brazos Valley; or charity of choice.

Dear SPJST Readers, I went to the Lodge 25, Ennis April youth meeting today. We had an Easter egg hunt. I won some prizes. Hooray! I even brought my baby sister, Misty. She won a prize for having the least amount of eggs.

I want to tell Margaret that I had a great time—the best time ever. I loved everything! The Easter eggs are beautiful then there comes the rain then some puddles. It’s a beautiful day. Thank you for having this meeting today.

Lodge 40 El Campo-Hillje Youth Club reports on April meeting Our meeting was called to order at 1:15 p.m. by President Ashley Sczech. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Nicole Laitkep. Present were six members, two adults, and one guest. Our guest was Edgar Enriquez.

Our youth leader reported that at the District Six Spring Meeting, we did a great job on our raffle tickets sales. There were two youth that participated in the egg decorating contest that was held. Craig Cerny and Ashley Sczech both received first place honors in their respective age divisions. The youth leader congratulated them on their great work.

We also received information on the Flag Day Essay Contest that we can participate in, and we received our new 2006-07 Youth Club Handbook.

The meeting was adjourned at 1:45 p.m.

After the meeting, we stuffed Easter eggs and decorated them. The eggs were handed out to everyone who attended the adult lodge meeting.

Lodge 97, Placedo announces Join Hands Day project Lodge 97, Placedo and Lodge 97, Placedo Youth Club will meet Saturday, May 6, 2006, at 9 a.m. (tentatively) at 610 Avenue D in Victoria (off Lone Tree Road by the Community Center).

Lodge 183 Arlington Youth Club reports on March meeting Dear Vestnik Readers, The March 31, 2006, meeting of SPJST Lodge 183, Arlington Youth Club was called to order at 7:25 p.m.

by President Hunter Wilson.

Rachel Reed led the Pledge of Allegiance and the SPJST Youth Club Motto. Members remained standing for a moment of silent prayer.

The register was read. Present were 12 members, two visitors, and two adults. We introduced our new member, Cassidy Higgins.

Rachel Reed gave the treasurer’s report. This month’s fundraising plan continues to be cashing in aluminum cans. The youth club will also continue collecting aluminum can pull tabs for the Ronald McDonald House in Fort Worth. We will once again plan to take a tour of the facility and have a meeting in one of the conference rooms.

Our youth leader, Kay Weeks, thanked everyone who participated in our Spring Break trip to Temple for the tour of the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum. She reported that the youth club donated to the SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive in the name of each of the youth club members. A special birthday gift presentation was made to Lodge 183 President Ann Pustejovsky.

The youth members enjoyed having a fish dinner served by our lodge.

Lodge 185 New Braunfels youth enjoys ice skating Dear Members, Our Lodge 185, New Braunfels Youth Club went ice skating in March. We went to the Northwoods ice skating rink in San Antonio. The Rampage Hockey Team practices at the same place. Ice skating was lots of fun. My favorite thing was watching the Zamboni clean the ice. The part I liked the least was falling on the cold ice—brrrrr!

Lodge 202 Jourdanton Youth Club enters parade Dear SPJST Members, On April 8, 2006, the Lodge 202, Jourdanton Youth Club participated in the Strawberry Festival Parade in Poteet.

After the parade, we had our meeting and social at Pizza Inn. We talked about camp, LIT camp, YAD, youth club officer elections, tee-shirt orders, and Flag Day contest, and we worked on point sheets and Vestnik projects. Our guest speaker was Belenda Barta, Assistant DYC. I had fun at the parade and eating pizza.

New members were Bryce Huddleston and Kayln Burchett.

Killeen Special Events Center.

On April 2, we had more than 20 members of Lodge 246’s youth club along with members of the adult lodge join together and participate in the “Don’t Mess with Texas Trash-Off.” We collected more than 16 bags of trash during our Adopt-A-Highway pick up.

Join Hands Day Project Our next meeting will be at the Belton Senior Activity Center in Belton for our Join Hands Day project. This will be from 8 a.m to 4 p.m.

Along with our project, we will have lunch with the members of the Senior Center. Hope to see everyone there!

Lodge 246 Morgan’s Point Youth Club expresses thanks Dear Readers, I would like to say thank you to all the youth members of Lodge 246, Morgan’s Point. During the past two months, we have been extremely busy.

During the month of March, we had our Adopt-a-Highway safety meeting; handed out trophies won by our members during the SPJST Awards Banquet; had a barbecue fund-raiser, hosted by Backyard Barbeque in Morgan’s Point; and sponsored a fund-raiser in the Texas Corvette and Chevy Show at the

Lodge 107, Floresville welcomes Ryan Douglas Henke, age five, to the youth club. He is the son of Douglas Henke and Natalie Henke. Ryan’s little sister, Brooke, is also a member of SPJST. Ryan attends Floresville Early Childhood Campus.

He also attends Hill Country Karate and is a green belt. Ryan hopes to become a member of Team Extreme when he gets older.

Ryan likes chicken nuggets, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and pizza, and his favorite television shows are Mythbusters, SpongeBob Squarepants, and American Chopper. His hobbies are fishing, hunting, singing, helping others, swimming, and doing things with his family. He also likes John Deere.

The most useful term is dobrý den.

Its common usage is relatively new, but it has almost replaced dobré odpoledne meaning good afternoon and has been making inroads in replacing even dobré ráno or dobré jitro. Dobrý den has replaced also quite a few overly polite greetings such as poklona, má úcta, rukulíbám, etc.

Nazdar was made popular by the Sokols, and in this country, it was regarded as a special Sokol greeting.

This is no longer so. Nazdar is very common, and no longer connected with Sokol use exclusively.

When you meet someone who is older or whom you do not know closely, then the greeting of dobrý den would come to your lips, while a close friend or contemporary you would greet with nazdar. From the point of an English-speaking person, the usage of nazdar is peculiar in the sense that it could and actually is commonly used, not only when meeting a person like the American “hello”, but also in parting, instead of na shledanou or sbohem.

What is Sokol?

By SPJST LAM Administrator Sandi Wicker American Sokol is a multifaceted organization guiding its members throughout life, from early youth through maturity, to physical and moral health, good citizenship and responsible patriotism, combined with continuous selfimprovement. This goal is pursued through general physical fitness activities, gymnastics and sports, as well as varied cultural and social activities.

Sokol is Czech for “falcon.”

Sokol is English for a great group of people bonded by a common ethnicity, heritage or interest. Sokol has been in the United States since 1865 and has spread from coast to coast and from the northern border to the southern.

Founded in 1862 in the Czech lands which later became Czechoslovakia (now Czech Republic and Slovak Republic), the

Sokol organization continues today in the United States as a vital, thriving entity. Based on founder Dr. Miroslav Tyrs’ credo of “A Sound Mind in a Sound Body,” the member units of the American Sokol offer physical training in gymnastics and other athletics, as well as providing cultural awareness and family oriented activities. Sokol’s first unit in America was started in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1865.

If you are looking for a safe place for children to learn personal discipline, physical fitness and gymnastic skills, song and dance, Sokol is ready and waiting for them. Sokol units offer gym classes and social activities for teenagers, too! Still feeling competitive in your 20s, 40s, or 60s? Sokol has a place for you, too! On that same day, we will also sponsor “Czech Out Your Heritage” Through Art. This art show for youth, ages five to 18, will be displayed in the Fair Pavilion from noon to 4 p.m.
