The banquet began with introductions and welcomes by SPJST officials. Keynote speaker Clyde “The Cajun” Harris then addressed the crowd of approximately 350. Harris challenged the fraternalists to make a difference in 2006. “Maybe you didn’t finish as high as you hoped to in 2005,” he stated. “It’s a new year, and everyone is starting out equal . . . get in line this year, and you can be a winner at next year’s banquet.” He also encouraged the winners to take pride in their award trophies and plaques. “It’s always a great joy to tell people what the award is for . . . and that’s a great way to talk SPJST.” Following the keynote, Supreme Lodge Vice President Gene McBride presented a summary of SPJST’s success in 2005. He then introduced the 2006 SPJST membership campaign: Action ’06. Thirty-two individuals were recognized for the special honor of being nominated Fraternalists of the Year from their respective lodges. The SPJST
