“Getting Acquainted” with Lodge 191, Lufkin
N
ovember 11 marks Veterans Day, a holiday that honors those who have died or fought in all American wars. November 11 is the anniversary of the end of World War I, which ended in 1918 with the Treaty of Versailles — signed on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month between the Allies and Germany. President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the first holiday observance — called Armistice Day — in 1919. It has been observed since then, though the date has changed a few times and the legal name of the holiday became Veterans Day in 1954.
On Saturday, October 22, 2005, Lodge 191, Lufkin invited the public to a “let’s get acquainted dance.” The lodge was decorated with a Halloween theme, and it looked great. A prize was awarded to Troy Cook, a visitor, as the best-dressed spook. Glenn Lenderman and Friends provided the music.
During music breaks, the lodge cloggers delighted the audience with lively dance routines. Two junior cloggers, Lauren Ford and Ashton Allen, performed to the delight of the audience, who gave them a standing ovation. A pair of professional dancers from Tyler, Texas, exhibited a western West Coast swing dance.
Bobbi Friday, a lodge member who teaches our country and western dance lessons, taught a line dance which filled the floor with dancers. Then, it was topped off with the Chicken Dance. A total of 42 non-members attended the dance. SPJST Sales Agents John Anderson and Ken Carter explained the different types of available insurance coverage and annuities. They also handed out literature on our programs. The dance was a success and five appointments were made for immediate followup by the sales agents. —SPJST—
