I received this touching story from Lodge 1, Fayetteville FAC Sharon Fritsche. I hope you enjoy it as I did.

It can change your thinking: Two men, both seriously ill, occupied the same hospital room. One man was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour each afternoon to help drain the fluid from his lungs. His bed was next to the room’s only window. The other man had to spend all his time flat on his back. The men talked for hours on end. They spoke of their wives and families, their homes, their jobs, their involvement in the military service, and where they had been on vacation.

Every afternoon when the man in the bed by the window could sit up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the things he could see outside the window.

The man in the other bed began to live for those one hour periods where his world would be broadened and enlivened by all the activity and color of the world outside.

The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake. Ducks and swans played on the water while children sailed their model boats. Young lovers walked arm in arm amidst flowers of every color, and a fine view of the city skyline could be seen in the distance.

As the man by the window described all this in exquisite detail, the man on the other side of the room would close his eyes and imagine the picturesque scene.

One warm afternoon, the man by the window described a parade passing by. Although the other man could-

n’t hear the band, he could see it. In his mind’s eye as the gentleman by the window portrayed it with descriptive words.

Days and weeks passed.

One morning, the day nurse arrived to bring water for their baths only to find the lifeless body of the man by the window who had died peacefully in his sleep. She was saddened and called the hospital attendants to take the body away.

As soon as it seemed appropriate, the other man asked if he could be moved next to the window. The nurse was happy to make the switch, and after making sure he was comfortable, she left him alone.

Slowly, painfully, he propped himself up on one elbow to take his first look at the real world outside.

He strained to slowly turn to look out the window beside the bed. It faced a blank wall. The man asked the nurse what could have compelled his deceased roommate to describe such wonderful things outside this window.

The nurse responded that the man was blind and could not even see the wall. She said, “Perhaps he just wanted to encourage you.”

Logo Golf Ball Collector Sixty-two year SPJST member Joe Zvolanek stopped by the Home Office recently. I had a nice visit with him.

He brought by the photo that appears on page 20 of his dad in a horse and buggy in 1914. He also showed me a picture of a $3.5 million “skycar” prototype that is offered in this year’s Neiman Marcus Christmas book.

Technology sure has come a long way!

SPJST records 2,519 applications written through September in Challenge 2005 campaign Through the end of September, the SPJST received 2,519 applications for insurance and annuity certificates. The goal of the Challenge 2005 membership drive is to write at least 2,500 applications.

In conjunction with SPJST’s Challenge 2005 program, local lodges have been assigned application quotas for the year. The lodge quota has been based largely on past performance and

perceived potential.

The fourth column, “Youth Club Quota,” applies to those lodges with youth clubs and reflects applications written for members between the ages of 0 and 17. “Youth Club” totals are applied toward the lodge’s total quota.

The sixth column, “Lodge Incentive Count,” reflects the number of new certificates issued for the Lodge Recognition and Incentive Program.

District Two plans October 22 Six Flags trip The District Two Six Flags Over Texas trip will be Saturday, October 22, 2005.

The trip is open to all SPJST members. Guests are welcome upon availability on the bus. Deadline for reserved seats is October 15. Tickets are $20 per person (paid in advance).

Buses will leave the SPJST Home Office in Temple, 520 North Main, at 7 a.m. We will leave Six Flags at 10:15 p.m. and return at approximately 1 a.m. Contact District Two Youth Counselor Patsy Koslovsky at (254) 985-2396.

District Three President invites members to fall meeting

I want to invite all members of District Three to the Fall Meeting that will be hosted by Lodge 183, Arlington, Texas. The lodge members are busy planning a fun day for us all. I want to thank Lodge 183 for taking on this challenge. They will appreciate any donated baked good to be used for the cake spin. Adults, be sure to get your costume out and wear it at the meeting for the adult costume contest.

I would like to bring to the attention of the people attending the Fall Meeting that the Officers of District Three have increased the number of cans to bring for the free meal. We are now asking for five canned goods to be donated to a local food bank by the hosting lodge.

District Four Fall Fun Day October 29 at Lodge 49, Rowena Dear Lodge Brothers and Sisters, Lodge 49, Rowena will host the District Four Fall Fun Day on Saturday, October 29, 2005.

Registration will begin at 10:30 a.m. Lunch will be served at 12:30 p.m. We will have different contests for the young and old. Prizes will be given in each category. Lodge 18, Elgin plans November, December activities President Mike opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silent prayer for all SPJST members. Shirlene read the minutes. Glenward read the treasurer’s report. Gladys gave the ticket report, and Irene gave the house report. Charles gave the bar report and the trustees report.

Christmas Dance—December 11 Artie wanted to know about the Christmas dance and New Year’s Eve. We will decorate the hall for Christmas on December 6. We will have a Christmas dance December 11, and we will serve refreshments again this year. Everyone really enjoyed the Christmas dance last year. Garage Sale—November 5 The lodge approved the garage sale. It will be November 5 and 6, if need be. Teresa and Joyce will be in charge.

We were saddened to hear that another of our loyal supporters Willie Zamorsky passed away. Evelyn sent a sympathy card to the Zamorsky family.

We had several guests from the SPJST Home Office. We sang “Happy Birthday” to State FAC Michael Morris. Michael talked to us about the importance of working together and supporting the youth.

We might work with the youth for Join Hands Day or in October during Czech Heritage Month or any project to interact with the youth.

Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek, State Youth Director John Hoelscher, District Two Youth Counselor Patsy Koslovsky, and District Two Director Bobby Wuensche were at our meeting.

With the resignation of our local youth leader Staci, a new officer was elected. Sheryl Arrisola will finish the year as youth leader. Thank you, Staci, for all you did for our youth.

We sang, “Happy Birthday” to Evelyn. Happy anniversary was sung for Walter and Laverne, Donnie and Diane, and Arthur and Marie.

May you all have many more happy years.

The youth club entertained us with a song they learned at camp. Great job! We really did enjoy it. The

youth club is having a food drive.

Lodge 29, Taylor cook-off set for October 28-29 The SPJST Lodge 29, Taylor Fifth Annual Barbecue Cook-Off (C.T.B.A. Sanctioned) will be Friday and Saturday, October 28 and 29, 2005, at the Lodge 29 hall, located at 5025 FM 619 in Taylor, Texas.

For barbecue cookers, the entry fee is $80 and that includes chicken, pork ribs, and brisket. There is a $10 fee for jackpot butter beans and a $10 fee for jackpot sausage.

Trophies will be awarded for first through 10th places in all categories (chicken, pork ribs, brisket, jackpot butter beans, and jackpot sausage).

Unique trophies will be awarded for first, second, and third Master Cook and “Best Rig.” Cash prizes will also be awarded for first through 10th places in all categories. Plus, there will be guaranteed $2,500 in prize money!

Graduating high school seniors and college undergraduates who have been SPJST members for one or more years are encouraged to apply for an SPJST Scholarship.

Established in 1982, the SPJST Scholarship Program is funded by an allocation of the SPJST Supreme Lodge and through community contributions by SPJST members. Accordingly, the more funds available, the more scholarships awarded. In 2005, the SPJST awarded a total of 45 scholarships for $45,500 through its scholarship program.

Ready for some turkey and dressing and ham with all the trimmings and some good domino playing?

SPJST Lodge 48, Beyersville will host a progressive “42” tournament on Saturday, October 29, 2005.

Registration fee is $10 and includes the noon meal, snacks, and prizes.

Registration begins at 8:15 a.m., and we plan to begin playing at 9:15 a.m.

Fifteen games will be played with a time limit of 20 minutes per game.

The tournament should end around 4:30 p.m.

We especially invite SPJST members, but anyone is welcome. You do not need a partner as all players will draw numbers and be seated accordingly for the first round. The two winners will move to the next table and split up and play with the losers who remain at that table. There will be no head table, thus all winners will move. We will use the same rules that the SPJST uses.

District Six Recognizes Sales Representative James Bacak An oral tribute was given for the late Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje Sales Representative James Bacak at a District Six continuing education class on August 24 in Taiton.

Brother Bacak passed away on Thursday, August 18, 2005.

A plaque expressing this tribute in writ- James Bacak ing was presented to his wife, Ardis, and their son and daughter-inlaw, Brad and Crystal. Bacak’s SPJST membership dates back to May 22, 1940. He became a sales representative with SPJST on August 8, 1975, which marks 30 years of

dedicated service. He presently has 285 active policies recorded. He was a million dollar producer for five years, including 1998, 2000, 2002, and 2004. He was top producer for District Six in 2000 and 2002 and top producer for the state of Texas in 2002. He was named FIC of the Year in 2002 and also received the quality service award in 2004.

He was named Fraternalist of the Year for lodge activities for Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje.

“James was a hard worker, always had his clients and members best interest as his priority,” said Karen Kaspar, District Six State Field Representative. “His dedication, work ethics and love for the SPJST membership and organization was evident through his daily efforts.”

Riding the SPJST Float through the Calhoun County Fair Parade in Port Lavaca are members of Lodge 41, Port Lavaca. The float received the first place award.

Driving the float through the parade is Supreme Lodge Vice President Gene McBride. His passenger is District Six Director Michael Ahlstrom.

SPJST hospitality. Our SPJST Sales Representatives will be available to assist them with questions and applications.

Each person attending should plan to bring five canned goods which entitles them to a wonderful, homecooked meal of ham, sausage, potatoes, corn, green beans, bread, dessert, and a drink. (Please no expired canned goods, please.) All collected canned goods will be delivered and donated to Mission Arlington. Lunch will be served for $6 per plate in lieu of the canned goods donation. In addition, any and every one is welcome to bring a baked good for the cake spin and/or a donation for the bingo prizes.

District Six Sales Representatives Earn Quality Service Awards Five SPJST Sales Agents from District Six were among the nine in the state’s seven districts to earn quality service awards recently from the National Association of Fraternal Insurance Counsellors (NAFIC).

Certificates were presented at the quarterly continuing education class held by District Six State Field Representative Karen Kaspar Wednesday, August 24, 2005, at the Taiton Community Center in Taiton.

Supreme Lodge Vice President Gene McBride, FICF, and District Six Director Mike Ahlstrom were on hand to present the certificates on behalf of the NAFIC. Recipients were Ray Pilgrim and Glenn Kaminsky, FIC, both of Lodge 28, East Bernard; Karen

Kaspar, FIC, of Lodge 30, Taiton; the late James Bacak, FIC, of Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje. Accepting Bacak’s award was his wife, Ardis Bacak. His son, Brad, was also in attendance for the presentation.

The quality service award recognizes FICs who have a 90 percent persistency covering issued life insurance production of $1 million or more on at least 25 lives during the year 2004. The FIC must have been with his or her fraternal society at least two years.

In addition to these awards, Kaspar also received the Bronze Award. This award requires various earned first-year commissions on a minimum of 25 lives.

The lodge will furnish hot dogs, desserts, decorations, and prizes.

Admission to the party is one canned food item or school supplies for the hurricane evacuees. Costumes are required for everyone. Bring a friend to join the fun! A membership drive is planned.

FAC Mary Ann Barta reported several members met with the county judge who signed the proclamation proclaiming October as Czech Heritage Month. Members were reminded to keep track of their frater-

nal acts and hours. The “Stuff the Bus” campaign aided 361 children with school supplies.

The lodge gained seven new members in August and September.

Cell Phones for Soldiers Collection Drive Cell Phones For Soldiers announces that SPJST Lodge 246, Morgan’s Point member Bob Hagen has joined the program as an official cell phone collection point of contact. Cell phones may be dropped off at 1613 Ridgeway in Temple, Texas, any time during the day. Cell phones may also be brought to the SPJST Home Office in Temple.

Cell Phones For Soldiers is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that was started by two Massachusetts teenagers to help buy calling cards to send to our soldiers serving in the Middle East. Started in April, 2004, Cell Phones For Soldiers has raised more than $250,000 and has sent more than 9,000 prepaid calling cards to our troops.

The program will accept any make or model cell phone. Please drop off the cell phones, batteries, chargers, accessories, Blackberry PDAs, and pagers. The cell phones are recycled for cash to purchase more calling cards.

Houston County Czech Heritage Once again it is time for the Third Annual Houston County Czech Heritage Reunion at St. Francis of the Tejas Catholic Parrish Center, located at 409 North Fourth Street in Crockett, Texas, on Saturday, October 29, 2005, beginning at 10 a.m.

In Memory of Bob Miracle

Services for Joe R. “Bob” Miracle, 60, of Eddy were at 2 p.m. Thursday, October 13, 2005, at First Baptist Church of Eddy with the Reverend D.F. Barrett officiating.

Burial was in Eddy Cemetery.

Mr. Miracle Bob Miracle died Monday, October 10.

He was born in Temple to Cecil and Josephine (Watson) Miracle. He was reared in Eddy and graduated from Bruceville-Eddy High School.

He attended Blinn Junior College, Temple College, and Baylor University. He married Elizabeth Jane Crawshaw in Waco on February 9, 1974. He worked as a salesman for Burrus-Matthews in Dallas. He operated Miracle Food Store in Eddy for 19 years and Miracle Minimax in Moody for three years prior to his retirement in 1996. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Eddy and the Elk Lodge in Temple. He served as president of SPJST Lodge 200, Bruceville-Eddy and RVOS Lodge 200. He was a member of the Bruceville-Eddy Fire Department, where he held several offices, including chief. He was president of the Central Texas Barbecue Association.

Survivors are his wife, Jane of Eddy; son, Jeff Odle of Eddy; daughter, Tammy Yakesch of Eddy; sister, Nancy Deviney of Eddy; and four grandchildren.

Visitation was held Wednesday, October 12 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Cole Funeral Home in McGregor.

He was born November 5, 1957, in El Campo to Victor Ray and Elizabeth “Betty” Staha Hubenak.

Mr. Hubenak was a meat cutter for HEB and a Catholic.

Survivors include his wife, Lalani Lowrey Hubenak of El Campo; daughter, Casie Aguilar of El Campo; sons, Coleman Mann of Corpus Christi and Jeremy Mann of Wharton; sister, Barbara Paukner of Angleton; and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation began on Thursday, September 29 at 4 p.m. at Triska Funeral Home. The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home. A rosary was held Friday, September 30 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Philip Catholic Church.

The funeral service was at 11 a.m. with the Reverend Robert Guerra officiating. Interment followed at Holy Cross Memorial Park under the direction of Triska Funeral Home.

She was the daughter of Carl Wolbrueck, Sr. and Ida Kohler Wolbrueck and the granddaughter of August and Federika Wolbrueck, who settled near the Mozo community, west of Granger in the late 1800s.

On October 12, 1936, Edna married Albert James Strmiska of Granger. At the time of his death in 1999, Albert and Edna had been married for 62 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband; daughter, Rosalie Lefner; parents; and brothers, Arnold, Alvin, and Carl Wolbrueck, Jr. Mrs. Strmiska is survived by daughter, Alice Tschoerner and sonin-law Joe of Schwertner; daughter, Betty Inman and son-in-law Bobby of Taylor; and son-in-law, Edmond Lefner, also of Taylor; grandchildren, Harold Marek of Bartlett, Clayton Lefner of Cedar Park, Angela Inman of Austin, David Marek of Bartlett, Michael Lefner of Flower Mound, Kenneth Marek of Lorena, and Stephen Lefner of Taylor; great-

grandchildren, Jessica and James Lefner of Cedar Park, Michael Bayer, and Keaton Marek of Lorena, Claire and Brycen Lefner of Flower Mound, Amber Elliott of Bartlett; and great-great-grandson, Alex Avier.

Edna was a housewife and often worked with Albert on the farm. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Taylor, Catholic Daughters of the Americas, SPJST Lodge 29, Taylor; and a volunteer at St. Vincent de Paul in Taylor.

May our departed sister rest in eternal peace.

Expression of Sympathy We, the members of the Resolution Committee of Lodge Hvezda Texasu, No. 47, Seaton, Texas, on behalf of our membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed lodge sister, ANGELINE C. KELAREK. Services for Angeline C. Kelarek, age 95, of Temple were held at 2 p.m., Monday, October 3, 2005, at Seaton Brethren Church with the Reverend Joe Emerson officiating.

Burial was in the Seaton Cemetery.

She died Friday, September 30 in a Temple Nursing Home.

Mrs. Kelarek was born in East Bernard to Frank and Jannie Parenica Andel. She married John Kelarek on October 19, 1927. She was a homemaker and helped with her husband’s farm. She was a member of Seaton Brethren Church and SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton.

Her husband preceded her in death on June 22, 1990.

Survivors are sons, Edward Kelarek of Hilltop Lakes, Wilbert Gene Kelarek of Houston, Edmond Kelarek of Temple, and Johnny Kelarek of Burlington; sister, Bertha Lathrop of Cleveland; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Visitation was from 4 to 6 p.m.

Sunday, October 2 at Sheffield Funeral Home in Temple.

We discussed the latest two events – the Manor Lions Club Parade and the District Two Fall Meeting. The parade was on September 17, and five members had fun riding the float and throwing out candy in Downtown Manor.

On September 18 was the District Two Fall Meeting in Taylor. Five youth attended and participated in the Christmas Ornament Contest. Charlie and EJ Anderson placed first in their age groups. TJ Anderson entered the costume contest and was dressed as a farmer. Two youth worked a country store booth and also cleaned up afterward. The youth club also donated an item to the silent auction.

Six Flags Trip and Lock-In Upcoming events are the District Two Six Flags trip on October 22. We will meet in Temple at 7 a.m.

November 12 is the District Two Lock-In also in Temple from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. More information will be available next month. I hope to see everyone there!

Canned Food Drive We’ll host a canned food drive from October through December. We will hand out and post flyers and also have a box for donations. We ask that anyone who visits the hall give a few cans. In December, all cans will be collected and given to the Elgin Food Pantry.

Make A Difference Day October 22 is also Make A Difference Day. We’ve set aside October 15 and 29 to help an elderly woman of our community, Mrs. Nygard, in the upkeep of her yard.

Others were also mentioned and will be a part of our Make A Difference Day. We will also contribute to the Hurricane Katrina and Rita victims in some way.

Holiday Plans On Halloween, the youth club will have a booth in the trick-or-treat trail through Veterans Memorial Park. We have also discussed having a hamburger fund raiser around Halloween time, and we will cook the burgers in the hall’s kitchen.

Christmas is fast upon us! Every year, we visit Golden Years Nursing Home at Valentine’s and Christmas time and give residents crafts. We talked about some ideas and will make a final decision in October and begin “creating” in November. We’ve requested to use the SPJST Home Office Float for December 3, if it is available, for the Elgin Fireman’s Light-Up Parade. The parade is in

VĚSTNÍK Downtown Elgin at dusk. If the float is already being used, we will decorate our own. All members, youth and adults, are welcome to ride and sing carols.

At Christmas, many churches fill shoeboxes with goodies for little kids and soldiers overseas. We want to help by wrapping shoeboxes and filling them with toiletry items, school supplies, toys, and related materials.

They will also receive a personal letter from the member who fills that particular box.

Committees We have set up two committees.

Charlie Anderson and Ashley Guerrero will head the telephone committee and are responsible for reminders of upcoming events.

Brandon Bowen was voted chairman of the sunshine committee. A landscape committee is desperately needed to upkeep the flower beds around the hall! These were created by the youth two years ago in memory of Youth Leader Ruby Bowen, who served with the SPJST for 20 years.

Other committees will be voted on at the next meeting.

little brother tried to hit someone, but he didn’t. At the end of the parade, when we got back to the car, my dad bought a marshmallow gun and shot me with it.

After that, we went to my dad’s company picnic. My brother and I played pool and football. Then, he went and got a soda. I asked how he got the soda. He showed me. Then, I asked how much it cost. He said it was free. So I drank free sodas all day. Then, my dad won $50 in a drawing.

At our SPJST Lodge 18, Elgin meeting, our new leader is Sheryl Arrisola. I was late for the meeting because I had a football game, but they voted and said I would be counted present.

Dear Věstník Readers, On September 17, 2005, we had a parade in Manor. We got in my aunt’s Ford Explorer. We had a lot of candy, and we threw it to people. My

Lodge 1, Fayetteville Youth Club Busy with School and Community Activities SPJST Lodge 1, Fayetteville Youth Club has been busy. Along with our regular meetings, we have been selling drinks and snacks at the Fayetteville Junior High volleyball games. We also help cheer on our members who play.

We decided that we would work hard so we can go on more fun and educational trips.

As everyone knows Hurricane Rita and Katrina were bad times, so SPJST members thought they would help out. Some of our members on September 24 went to a local gas station (Fayetteville Store) and handed out free SPJST

bottled water to the long lines at the gas pumps, some people had been on the road for 24 hours. We received many thanks yous.

We also cheered and welcomed the HOPE Bike Ride for Cancer to Fayetteville at the school. SPJST Lodge 1 Youth Club members are busy bees!

Her family includes Billy and Sandra Slovak and little sister Hanna. Hayley enjoys playing with her best friend, stuffed blue bunny, Barbies, riding her fourwheeler and bicycle, coloring, drawing, and singing and dancing to her own songs. Hayley is a kindergartner at Early ChildrenHood Center.

She attends St. John Church.

History of the Czech National Anthem “Kde Domov Muj” The national anthem of the Czech Republic is “Kde Domov Muj” (“Where is My Home”), a stirring song whose lyrics suggest a deep love and yearning for one’s own native land. It was composed in 1834 by Frantisek Skroup for a play about a village fiddler written

by Josef Tyl and entitled “Fidovacka.”

Frantisek Stroup, Czech composer and author of the first Czech opera, was born the son of a country teacher and musician. He was one of the main Czech Revivalist composers.

Imagine, if you will, a quiet Prague street in the first half of the 19th Century. A man is furiously composing, writing a tune on music sheets. The writing is messy and the sheets show signs of energetic crossing-out of notes and lyrics.

The title of the tune is simply “Song Number 19.”

Now imagine, some weeks later, the song is first sung in a Prague theater. The theater falls into a dead silence, everyone holding their breath. At the end of the song, the silence continues to be suddenly broken by the eruption of what seems to be an endless show of joy and excitement.

This is the magical power of this

song, a magic that best conveys the soul of the Czech people. The song remained popular with the Czech people throughout the remainder of the 19th Century and into the 20th Century. The Czechs took it with them as they spread to the new work. With the establishment of the Czechoslovak Republic in l919, it was the clear choice to be the anthem for this new nation.

Texas Polka Music Museum requests band information The Texas Polka Music Museum needs your help. Yes, we always need financial help, but we are starting a project of collecting information about Texas Polka Bands. This information will be part of the historic portion of the Texas Polka Music Museum.

We need the name of the band, members’ names and instrument they played, the area the band was/is from, primary time frame they played, if no longer playing, and information about any recordings they made. We will catalogue this information so that one can see who played with what bands.

It will be evident that many musicians played with several different bands.

Similar information is needed on Texas polka DJ’s radio stations or stations where aired, call letters, time period on the air, (not time of day, but years on the station). This information can be provided to Texas Polka

Jerry’s First Visit to Czechoslovakia

It’s Lodge 79, Corpus Christi member Jerry Elzner on his first visit to Czechoslovakia in 1947.

Jerry was 21 years old and he had four uncles and an aunt living in the country. The photo was taken in Strani, County of UH. Hradiste.

“My family dressed me in a kroj, and the little village had a parade for me,” Jerry says.

A Creed for Texas Czechs I believe in the future of the Texas Czechs, with faith born not of words, but of deeds—achievements won by present and past generations of Texas Czechs, in the promise of better days through better ways.

Even as the better things we enjoy now have come to us from the struggles of former years.

I believe that to carry on the traditions, language, and stories of our culture is pleasant as well as challenging, for I know the joys and have faced the barriers and resistance and still hold an inborn fondness for our ethnic identity which, even in hours of discouragement, I cannot deny.

BCCHS Czech celebration October 23 Join Burleson County Czech Heritage Society on October 23, 2005, for a genuine Czech meal (soup, sausage, roast, and all the trimmings) and genuine Czech music, featuring the Jodie Mikula Orchestra.

The event will be held at the Burleson County Fair Association Expo Center in Caldwell. The meal will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Austin CHA sets culture celebration The Austin Czech Historical Association’s 11th Annual Celebration of Czech Culture is Saturday, November 5, 2005, at 6 p.m., at the Westwood Country Club, located at 3808 West 35th Street in Austin, Texas. The evening will feature dinner, entertainment, and dancing.

Entertainment will include The Happy Czech Singers; accordion music by Chris Rybak; and music by the Kovanda Czech Band of Houston.

There will also be a silent auction.

A buffet dinner, which includes dinner, dessert table, tea, and coffee, will be served. Dancing will follow.

In 1999, the Texas legislature proclaimed October “Czech Heritage Month” and has continued to do so each year This year, the Bexar County Chapter of the Czech Heritage Society will hold a Czech Heritage Festival on Sunday, October 30 from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at the Knights of Columbus Hall, located at 5721 Rigsby in San Antonio, Texas (0.6 mile outside Loop 410). A Czech meal consisting of sauerkraut, potatoes, pickles, etc. will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The cost of the meal is $6 for adults and $3 for children under 10 years of age. Drinks,
