Editor’s Note

Patience and heart SPJST greetings! I have two shout outs this week. The first goes to all of the members who served as camp chaperones at our seven SPJST camps around the state this summer. In compiling the video of SPJST’s summer youth activities, it looks like our young people—and the adult volunteers—had a great time. Being a camp chaperone is not always an easy task. It requires a lot of patience and a lot of heart.

Thanks to all chaperones for dedicating a portion of your summer to assist the SPJST. We appreciate you.

Another shout out goes to our SPJST Sales Representatives. The numbers are in, and through July, sales representatives have written 1,811 applications. Being a sales rep is not always an easy task either. It, too, requires a lot of patience and a lot of heart. 1,811 applications since January—that’s almost an average of nine per day. And, we need 689 to achieve this year’s goal of 2,500.

That means the Home Office needs to receive an average of at least five apps per day through the end of the year. I know our outstanding team of sales representatives will exceed that. And, we can all help them out by giving them names of prospective members. Make a list of two or three people that you think might be interested in joining SPJST and give it to your sales representative. They will appreciate it. Thanks, sales reps, and keep up the great work!

SPJST records 1,811 applications written through July in Challenge 2005 campaign Through the end of July, the SPJST received 1,811 applications for insurance and annuity certificates. The goal of the Challenge 2005 membership drive is to write at least 2,500 applications.

In conjunction with SPJST’s Challenge 2005 program, local lodges have been assigned application quotas for the year. The lodge quota has been based largely on past performance and perceived potential.

The fourth column, “Youth Club Quota,” applies to those lodges with youth clubs and reflects applications written for members between the ages of 0 and 17. “Youth Club” totals are applied toward the lodge’s total quota.

The sixth column, “Lodge Incentive Count,” reflects the number of new certificates issued for the Lodge Recognition and Incentive Program.

State FAC invites everyone to SPJST Heritage Gala and Celebrity-Am Golf Scramble this weekend Greetings, fraternalists! I want to send out many thanks to all of you who continue to fulfill your lodge’s fraternal obligations. Lodges who are fraternally active are strong, growing, vibrant, and visible in their respective communities. Becoming and remaining fraternally active is very important and is a benefit to many. Your lodge, your members, your community, and the Society all benefit from your fraternalism. Dinners, parties, fund raisers, membership rallies, food and clothing drives, donations – these are all activities that help to bring notoriety, visibility, and awareness to your lodge.

Performing fraternal activities also help you to fulfill many of the 15 fraternal incentive categories, as defined by the SPJST’s Fraternal Incentive Program. At year’s end, the activities you performed are coupled with your certificate sales to determine the amount of money that each lodge is awarded, as defined by program guidelines. We rely heavily on our lodges to reach their fraternal goals so that the SPJST, as an organization, will remain tax-exempt. I encourage you to do your part so that the SPJST will enjoy another 108 years of prosperity!

SPJST Heritage Gala and Celebrity-Am Golf Scramble It’s almost time for the SPJST Heritage Celebrity-Am Golf Scramble. The date is Saturday, August 13, 2005. It will be held at Mill Creek Golf Club in Salado, Texas. The tournament will be a fourperson scramble (teams can be mixed – men and women) and many of the foursomes will have the chance to play with a celebrity! Children under the age of 16 are also encouraged to participate in a drive, pitch, and putt contest in the morning. We will have two age divisions for boys and girls: Division I (ages 6 to 10) and Division II (ages 11 to 15).

We are pleased to announce that Dallas Cowboys Great and Three Time Pro-Bowler Billy Joe Dupree is going to participate in our tournament!

He is also encouraging many of his friends to come and join us that day.

Miss Texas 2005 Morgan Matlock will be attending the Heritage Gala. Also joining us will be Tom Barfield, Butch Henry, and Lark Smith – all radio personalities from KRZI 1660 ESPN Radio out of Waco, Brian Collins (entertainer), Bubba Cox (entertainer and owner of the Cotton Club in Granger), and Johnny Lyon. A variety of musicians, active and retired athletes, and other celebrities are expect-

ed to attend.

Another exciting addition to this year’s tournament happens on the Friday night before the tournament, August 12. We will host the SPJST Heritage Gala at SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton Star Hall (Hvezda Texasu).

Registered golfers will be admitted free of charge. We are inviting the public to join us at this party for a $7 admission. Golfers are encouraged to bring spouses, family, and friends to take part in the fun. Children under the age of 13, who are accompanied by parents, will be admitted free. We will have a silent auction, golfing games and contests, and some great dance music provided by Johnny Lyon and The Country Nu-Notes. The kitchen and bar will be open to provide you with food and refreshments. Advance tickets are now available by contacting us at the Home Office.

As in the past, all proceeds raised by our tournament will benefit two charity organizations – the SPJST LAM (Library, Archives, and Museum), and the SPJST ENC (Education and Nature Center). A very special “thank you” goes out to both the LAM and ENC Boards of Directors for covering the cost of our radio advertisement! By the way, when you’re in the area, tune in to 1660 AM, and 99.9 FM (Waco 100) to hear our spots!

We are still soliciting sponsors to underwrite our related expenses. If you, or anyone you know, are interested in sponsoring any part of the SPJST Heritage Gala and Celebrity-Am Golf Scramble, please contact us at the Home Office. Lodges and businesses are strongly encouraged to be sponsors of, or to donate a silent auction item to, this important fund raising event. This is a great opportunity for local lodges to make their support for these two groups into a visible and public statement, as well as get some great advertisement and exposure. All celebrity pairings will be determined by SPJST. All players will receive a goodie bag filled with some neat items. Registration deadline is Friday, August 5.

A contribution was made to Arlene Koehn, a lodge member who is a cancer patient.

Lodge 4, Hallettsville Family Day this Sunday Dear Lodge 4 Members, SPJST Lodge 4, Hallettsville will hold its Annual Family Day on Sunday, August 14, 2005, at the American Legion Hall, beginning at 11 a.m. We will have a social hour, games, and a catered meal which will be served at noon. Barbecue pork and sausage with all the trimmings is on the menu. Desserts brought by members will be enjoyed with the meal.

We will have speakers from the SPJST Supreme Lodge and from District Six who will update us on events of the SPJST. Fifty-year members will be honored. Door prizes will be awarded by the lodge. Bingo and entertainment by our youth will provide us with a very pleasant afternoon.

Lodge 5 Pilot Point-Tioga members plan October picnic President Bill Heitzman called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. on July 11, 2005, at L.E. and Joella David’s gameroom in Pilot Point, Texas.

A discussion was held about the membership picnic to be held on a Sunday afternoon in October. L.E. David stated that he would call Tom Gracy about a price on catering the picnic and serving catfish.

A motion to adjourn the meeting at 8:15 p.m. was made by Alois Pelzel and seconded by L.E. David.

Lodge 8, Weimar meets August 22 The monthly meeting of Lodge 8, Weimar held on Monday, July 25, 2005, was called to order by the president at 7:45 p.m. with our meal preceding at 7 p.m. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Donna Coleman. All of our officers were present.

State FAC Michael Morris was our special visitor. He presented a program answering questions from members about the fraternal categories for our incentives. District Six Director Mike Ahlstrom and wife, Kathy, were also present. Brother Ahlstrom brought information on the interest rates and gave us a good report on SPJST. We always enjoy having Mike and Kathy visit us at our meetings.

District Six State Field Representative Karen Kaspar also joined us and made an interesting report on District Six. She reported that District Six had already met its quota for the year. She also reminded us of the District Six Barbecue Cook-Off in September. The prize drawing books were distributed to members present.

Greg Slaton was a guest who came with his grandparents, Melvin and Carolyn Tobola. Birthday wishes were extended to Christine Eschenburg, Carolyn Tobola, and Henrietta Veselka. Leo and JoAnn Jares celebrated their 46th wedding anniversary in July.

There being no other pressing business to conduct, we adjourned until the next meeting on August 22 at 7 p.m.

Decisions, decisions, decisions!

What shall we fill our plates with? It all looked so delicious. How could we resist taking a bit of each item?

After the meal, President Wilde called the meeting to order, and one of the first orders of business was to

read what the message in our fortune cookie said. Some of them were really good!

It was decided that we would start a collection of pictures of past Flag Hall gatherings and of the buildings that preceded our present building.

Brian Vanicek informed members that the SPJST Home Office will sponsor a golf tournament on Saturday, August 13 at Mill Creek Golf Club in Salado, Texas.

Members of Lodge 24 decided to sponsor a hole with a $100 donation.

All proceeds from this event will go to the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum (LAM) and SPJST Education and Nature Center (ENC).

So all you golfers, start practicing your putting and get your registration in to State FAC Michael Morris.

Birthdays for the month were Johnny Chervenka, Dustin Andel, Rachael Andel, Keith Andel, and Barbara Macek. Dustin, Rachael, Keith, and Barbara were honored with a special dessert provided by Dynasty Restaurant, and they all got their pictures taken while wearing a Chinese hat. What a wonderful way to celebrate a birthday.

There were no anniversaries this month. Clara Coufal was mentioned as being on the sick list.

Thank you to everyone who came out and made this such a wonderful evening of fun.

Lodge 74, Lovelady invites members to August 10 specialcalled meeting Dear Lodge Members, Please know that there will be a special-called meeting of SPJST Lodge 74, Lovelady on Wednesday, August 10 at 7 p.m. at the lodge hall. The lodge hall is located eight miles south of the Crockett Loop 304 intersection, just off Highway 19. The lodge hall is on the left. Lodge 51, Ellinger reports on annual dinner SPJST Lodge 51, Ellinger held its annual brisket and sausage dinner on Sunday, July 17, 2005, at the Ellinger Community Center at 12:30 p.m.

Refreshments were served at 12 noon. Many members and their families came out to enjoy the event.

Supreme Lodge Chairman and District One Director Donnie Victorick and wife, Janice, of Snook, District One Field Representative Bill Orsak, and Fasta Kaiser, sales representative from Columbus, were present.

Donnie Victorick asked the blessing before the meal was served.

After the meal, Calvin Hlinsky conducted a short meeting. A moment of silence was held for those deceased since our last dinner—Nola Marusik and Otylie Becka—and for those serving in the armed forces.

Mr. Victorick spoke about the youth club and different opportunities available for the youth. He also spoke about annuities and insurance.

He noted that SPJST is one of the fastest growing fraternal organizations. Bill Orsak commended the lodge for its continued success. He also noted Fasta Kaiser, Ronnie Pflughaupt, and Edna Berkfeld are available to assist members with insurance.

Elizabeth Drabek was presented a 50-year pin.

A prize drawing was held with the following winners: cooler - Larry Marusik; fan - Mary Ann Untermeyer; $50 gift certificate to Keyser Meat Market - Bernice Divin; play items - Chelsea Urban; and lawn chair - Cory Marusik.

A silent auction was held and door prizes were also presented.

Lodge 183, Arlington welcomes one of its newest members, Pate Steelman. Pate is the son of Tillman “Jeff” and Rhonda Steelman of Frisco and the grandson of Rudolph and Janie Rejcek of Mansfield.

Pate enjoys hunting, fishing, and being outdoors. Pate attends Legacy Christian Academy in Frisco. Pate is also a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. His SPJST sales representative is his mother, Rhonda Steelman.

Lodge 88, Houston reports on member activities A recent Bobby Jones dance at Lodge 88 was the setting for John Macholsky’s 80th birthday party!

John and wife, Loreen, have been avid supporters of the lodge’s dances for many, many years. Their immediate family members joined in on the celebration as well as 32 or so SPJST members. We’re always glad to have members who bring back their families to participate at functions together.

District Five held its Youth Achievement Day on June 26, hosted

by Lodge 196, Houston-West and District Five Youth Counselor Barbara Linney-Gonzales and District Five Assistant Youth Counselor Robert Castillo.

According to Sister Gonzales, the lodge was decorated beautifully, and the enthusiastic youth were prepared to display their arts, crafts, handiwork, talent, and royalty speeches in order to vie for a berth to compete in the State YAD in August. District Five Director Larry W. Pflughaupt oversaw the tabulation, and even though this is a vital committee, he regrets not being able to witness what was taking place on stage. Special guests on hand that day were SPJST Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek, accompanied by his lovely mother, Willie Mae Vanicek. Also, on hand was District Five’s new State Field Representative, Ed Jelinek.

Brother Ed is extremely vivacious and knowledgeable when it comes to fraternal organizations, and he shared that he is looking forward to working with all of the sales reps in his area.

He was glad to see the parents, grandparents, friends, and family who came out to support these youth on their day as they will ultimately become the future of SPJST. Personal Note I had the privilege of taking a trip to Floresville, Texas (30 miles south of San Antonio) a month or so ago, and was the house guest of long-time

Wednesday, August 10, 2005 SPJST friends, Maxine and Billy Pavliska. As many of you may recall, Maxine was District Seven Youth Counselor for over 40 years. I became acquainted with this awesome family through SPJST activities, and Maxine was one of my mentors when I attended my first LIT retreat at Val Verde in the early 1970s. Their daughter, Joan Siebert, is a former Miss SPJST and graduate of the University of Texas as is their son, John. The eldest son, Bill, is a highly-ranked firefighter in San Antonio. All three children and their families live in close proximity to their mom and dad. Also, Bill and Maxine are members of the Red and Whites and can been seen still attending their functions at Martinez Hall and elsewhere. They relay messages to me via Ruth and Bob Martinek who are very active at Lodge 88.

(Had it not been for SPJST, I would not have been blessed with these friends!)

Our lodge president, Pat Bruce and husband, J.R., recently returned from an Alaskan cruise! They both have stories, and were not disappointed in the least. The photos I’ve seen are breathtaking, and we are glad they made it safely back from a much-deserved break.

Lodge 88 committee members and new members, who joined in 2004, enjoyed the Awards Party on Sunday, July 31. Although the air conditioning was not working properly in the ballroom, the potluck lunch went well in the dining area. And, with all ceiling fans on, cards being tossed, chips being bet and beer flowing, no one really seemed to notice. Casino parties always seem to be a big hit these days. The prizes were of fine quality and made approximately 50 winners go home happy!

Crippled Creek provided great dance music for this dance. Scholarships were presented to Jonah Juarez and Micah Flowers. Jonah is the grandson of Frank and Dolores Juarez, and Micah is the granddaughter of Lonnie and Mary Flowers.

Ennis Sewing Circle The Ennis Sewing Circle met on July 4, 2005, for a fun day. There were 23 members and three guests — Darlene Pelzel, Jerry Zmolek, and Robert Cunningham.

President Sadie Kubin called the meeting to order, and the Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all. A moment of silence was held for Evelyn Slovak, sister to Dorothy Kudrna and cousin to several members; and for Ann Mullins who was a past member before moving to Alabama. She was aunt to Sadie Kubin.

Vlasta Laznovsky read the minutes, and Lil Kosarek gave the treasurer’s report. Both were approved as read.

Dorothy Prachyl read a thank you card from the family of Evelyn Slovak for all our thoughts, prayers, and cards. Dorothy read a thank you card from Elizabeth Machovsky for her card and money gift she received while in the hospital. She has been very ill, but is home now doing much better. We want to thank Elizabeth for the nice donation she has made to

If you remember, Evelyn Slovak was supposed to bring the door prize in June. She had it all ready to bring when she so suddenly passed away.

Her sister, Dorothy Kudrna, announced that she will bring it in August.

Sunshine Person Eleanor Pelzel announced our July birthday celebrants—Rose Mynarcik and Adelle Cikanek. A card was signed for Adelle to be mailed and “Happy Birthday” was sung to Rose. Marie Vrla brought a big pretty birthday cake for Rose which we all enjoyed.

Sadie Kubin announced she received a call from Libbie Wisniewski stating she was unable to come and that she would not be able to come in the future unless someone could pick her up. I bet she gets several calls next month. I talked to Libbie this morning, and she said her knees hurt her most of the time. She talked about her little gray kitten and how scared she was during the storm.

It is so nice she has something to keep her company.

It was discussed who will oversee Libbie’s kitchen chairmanship duties.

Marie Vrla and Rose Mynarcik volunteered. Thank you both.

Thank you to Pat Fowler for her donation to the Circle for the quilt that was quilted for her in June.

Vlasta Laznovsky welcomed two of our members Marie Vrla and Dorothy Prachyl, back from their trip to the Czech Republic. I will tell about the trip later in this article.

Eleanora Pelzel introduced her sister-in-law Darlene Pelzel, who was visiting from Indiana. She was a lovely person to talk with. We were happy to have her. Darlene’s husband and Eleanora’s husband are brothers. Eleanora said they are so much alike, and they enjoyed having

Pat Fowler announced we will quilt our Christmas quilt in August.

So quilters, please come. We need you.

Dorothy Prachyl read the Laughing Matters articles received from Liddie Pavelka. They were very funny as always. Thank you, Liddie, for remembering us. We miss you again. I understand that you are still having tests. We hope all turns out okay.

Sidney Bridewell is visiting her daughter in Wisconsin and having a great time, I am sure.

After the meeting, we had our elephant sale. It was such fun. We had so many items, we should have had it downtown.

I bought so many things—some I did not need, but they are neat. The Circle did well, but we did have some items that did not sell.

After the sale, we ate lunch— sandwiches, chips, watermelon, cantaloupe, and strawberries. As I promised to tell you, Dorothy Prachyl brought meat, bread, and the trimmings; Sadie brought chips; and Lil brought cantaloupe and strawberries; Vlasta brought watermelon. The Circle reimbursed everyone for the above except Marie as that was her gift to Rose. It was enjoyed by all.

Bessie Laznovsky promised to bring pictures of her daughter’s wedding that she attended in July. It sounded really pretty, and she was happy about it.

Congratulations to Ella Mae and Jerry Zmolek on their 50th wedding anniversary. It was celebrated June 19 at the KJT Hall in Ennis. It was hosted by their daughter and son-inlaw, Diane and Mark Rodgers. Ella Mae said everything was so beautiful and nice. The food was catered by Eddie Dean from Dallas, President Bush’s favorite caterer. The music was provided by Jimmy Zabojnik’s band, Harvesters. Ella Mae said everyone seemed to have had such a wonderful time. She will treasure the memories always.

Now for our show and tell. We had so many wonderful items and stories. I hope that I can tell it all correctly. It was really, really good. I wish everyone could have been there.

Rose Mynarcik was first. She brought and talked about Jerry Koubek’s sculpture of a model that he sculptured when taking sculpturing classes back in 1936 and a painting by Alfons Mucha, the famous Czech artist and painter from the Czech Republic. Jerry had given the sculpture to Joe Vrana, and I think the picture to Rose Mynarcik. They both have donated them to the Sokol

Museum. Now, they can be enjoyed by everyone—very nice.

Rose Bednar brought an item, and I think they called it some kind of comb that people used to pull cotton for quilts so that the cotton would be smooth. It was really unusual!

Sadie Kubin showed a little heart made out of cards that you could hang.

It was made by Mary Kopecek. She had made all the members one way back then. Sadie still has hers. What a nice remembrance. Also, she has a birthday card written in Czech from Mrs. Sramek; an ice cream dish that you used to get in oatmeal—I remember those days—and a beautiful handmade quilt top that she called tumbling blocks.

Eleanora Pelzel showed the pretty tee-shirt quilt she made for her grandson’s graduation. It was really neat.

Frances Vinkler showed several pieces of crochet items made by her mother. They were all different shapes and sizes—just beautiful.

Then she had an album full of pictures of all the quilts she has made.

Libbie Vrla counted them, and Frances has quilted 46 quilts. That is

really something. They were all very pretty.

Geraldine Zhanel showed a crochet purse which was made by her sister-in-law, Mary Zhanel when she first married into the Zhanel family.

It is over 50 years old and Geraldine remembers always carrying it to church every Sunday.

Dorothy Prachyl showed a little gold evening purse from the 1920s that belonged to her mother, Clara Vavra. It is one of her greatest treasures.

Esther Cunningham brought two little interesting frames. One showing a leaf and seed from a tree in the Czech Republic. The other was a piece of handmade lace. Both were very unique and unusual.

Martha Ritchey showed a silk table cloth her son brought back from India and a sandalwood wall hanging hook. Sandalwood trees are very special in India. If anyone has a sandalwood tree in his yard and it dies, the Indian government sends that person to prison. I am glad that I do not live there.

Vlasta Laznovsky had several great items and stories to go along

with them. First, she showed her mother’s sugar bowl that was a wedding gift, and two clear vases with grapes that were painted from the inside. Those were the original vases. When foiling became popular, her niece, Linda, foiled and painted them. They were very different.

Vlasta also had her grandmother’s Czech cookbook. She remembers her grandmother making caramel pie from scratch. The recipe was written in Czech on the inside cover of the cookbook. How neat she has her grandmother’s handwriting. She has since had it translated to English.

Vlasta also told a story about her mother telling the children they were having oloup si je—potatoes for dinner. All the kids wanted to know was what kind of potatoes. She told them they had to wait till dinner to find out.

When dinnertime came, she put a bowl of cooked, unpeeled potatoes on the table and said oloup se je in Czech which means peel your own potatoes. What a cute story. Vlasta really told it well.

Sylvia Laznovsky brought a photo album of her 2004 trip to the Czech Republic. The pictures were beauti-

ful. She also has three pocket watches that belonged to her father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. She only brought one to show. She also brought her Laznovsky grandparents’ wedding bands which had their names and marriage inside the rings.

They were married in 1904 in what is now Czech Republic. What a nice keepsake.

Libbie Vrla brought a beautiful, rare-cut crystal and pewter stein that she received from Jerry Koubek. At one time, the stein belonged to a Catholic priest. On his retirement, he gave it to his loyal housekeeper, who was Jerry’s cousin’s wife’s aunt. The aunt in turn gave it to his cousin’s wife. She in turn gave it to Jerry when he visited his native country in 1967. In 1994, Jerry in turn gave it to Libbie for her to treasure as they all had done in the past.

We experienced the ropes course, horseback riding, swimming, hiking, archery, canoeing, karaoke, and, of course, the shaving creme fight!

Dear Věstník Readers, When I went to District Two YAD at Lodge 29, Taylor, I had lots of fun.

When I first arrived, I went and registered my projects. Then, my mom gave me and my brothers some money to go play games. I played pool with my little brother, J.B. After that, we ate lunch at the lodge. My brothers and I ate grilled cheese sandwiches as my mom and sister had hamburgers. Then, we went back and played games while my mom was upstairs watching royalty and talent competitions. Later, they let us go look at the crafts. After that, they gave us our money for our merit points and announced the winning places.

Dear Věstník Readers, I went to camp on July 14, 2005.

When I got there, and it began to rain, I thought, oh, great. Then, when it rained the next day, I thought this was going to be the worst year ever. But it turned out to be a good time. I guess Patsy knew that there wasn’t one bad year at camp, and that she wasn’t about to let there be one!

I want to say thanks to Patsy and everybody else who helped make this year at camp a great one — even if it did rain.

My favorite part about camp was everything, except the rain. If I had to choose only one fun thing, it would have to be the challenge course. It really was a challenge to get up there and do it, since I am a little afraid of heights. But I had friends and family helping and encouraging me.

Lodge 183, Arlington Youth Club reports on July meeting Dear Vestnik Readers, The July 29, 2005, meeting of SPJST Lodge 183, Arlington Youth Club was called to order at 7:37 p.m.

by President Hunter Wilson.

Hunter Pustejovsky led the Pledge of Allegiance and the SPJST Youth Club Motto. Members remained standing for a moment of silent prayer.

The register was read by Secretary Colton Daniel. Present were 11 members, three visitors, and five adults. Visitors were Devon House, Ryan Brown, and Amanda Moody.

Youth Leader Kay Weeks gave the treasurer’s report. This month’s fund raising plan continues to be cashing in aluminum cans. The youth club will also continue collecting aluminum can pull tabs for the Ronald McDonald House in Fort Worth. We will once again plan to take a tour of the facility and have a meeting in one of their conference rooms. Other upcoming events are volunteering at Mission Arlington and our annual lock-in in the fall.

Our youth leader, Kay Weeks, reminded everyone about State YAD and collecting cans. All youth members are asked to collect their cans from home and bring them to the next meeting.

We talked about our participation in the Arlington Fourth of July Parade and about camp. We had fun looking at some of the pictures that were taken at camp. We wrote our camp comments to be included in the scrapbook.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:52 p.m. After the meeting, we worked on our Vestnik projects, collected cans from the hall and played games.

In Memoriam Expression of Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje, and on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincere and heartfelt sympathy to the family of our departed lodge brother, ALVIN E. BARTOS, age 72 of El Campo. He died Monday, July 11, 2005.

He was born June 17, 1933, in El Campo to Emanuel J. and Evalie Marie Wilbeck Bartos. Mr. Bartos was a retired farmer and a member of St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church. He was a U.S. Army Veteran serving during the Korean conflict. He was a member of American Legion Post 251, the KJT, SPJST Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje, and Catholic Life.

Survivors include his wife, Anita “Anna” Kocurek Bartos of El Campo; daughter, Martha Lynn Bartos of El Campo; son, Patrick Bartos of El Campo; and sisters, Rosemarie Bartos of El Campo and Evelyn Foytik of El Campo.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Veronica Uptagrafft; and brother, Bennie Bartos.

Visitation was Wednesday, July 13 at 11 a.m. A parish rosary followed the visitation at 7 p.m. at Triska Funeral Home. Funeral services were held Thursday, July 14 at St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church with the Reverend Gary Janak officiating.

Burial followed at Holy Cross Memorial Park with Military Honors under the auspices of American Legion Post 251.

Pallbearers were Joe Kocurek, Thomas Zdansky, Eric Schoenfield, Harold Schuetze, Raymond Palt, and David Uptagrafft.

Honorary pallbearers were Anton Zdansky, Gary Schoenfield, Harold “Buck” Kight and Dalton Ustynik.

Memorials can be made to St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church.

Resolution of Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje, and on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincere and heartfelt sympathy to the family of our departed lodge brother, ALBERT WUTHRICH, who died Sunday, July 17, 2005. He was 84.

He was bom to Fred Wuthrich and Martha Schoeneberg on November 24, 1920, in the family home in Crescent community. Mr. Wuthrich graduated from Crescent High School in 1939. While a student at Crescent, he began his work in agriculture during the 1936 session and until his graduation, held various offices in the Crescent FFA organization. His completion of six years of farm projects and his studies of vocational agriculture earned him the National American Farmer Degree, making him the first young man in Wharton County to receive this degree. The degree was conferred “in absentia” due to his service in the Air Corps.

He was a lifelong member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Wharton during which time he served as Elder and trustee. In recent years, he had been confined to his hospital bed at home.

S/Sgt. Albert F. Wuthrich served his country during World War II in the 916th Air Engineer Squadron from 1942 until 1945. He served in campaigns in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, and Central Europe. His citations include four overseas service bars, EAME Campaign Medal with four Bronze Stars, Distinguished Unit Badge HQ 455th, one service stripe, and the Good Conduct Medal.

El Campo Independent School District awarded Albert Wuthrich with an Honorary Board Member certificate in appreciation of his service of 20 years as school board member of the Crescent and El Campo schools. Mr. Wuthrich also received an award of recognition for exceptional ability in the field of farming and devoted community service by the Wharton Chamber of Commerce in 1964. He was a member of Wharton County Farm Bureau and served as president for many years.

Survivors include his wife, Ann Wuthrich of 59 years; daughters,

Nancy Denton of Galveston and Jane Smith and son-in-law, Thomas E. Smith of Crescent; grandchildren, Dr. Darrell G. Smith and wife, Sioux of Holland, Texas, Jenna Christen Smith and Kendra Joy Smith, both of Bryan-College Station, S/Sgt. Joseph D. Denton of Georgia, Airman Micah S. Denton of Kentucky, Ensign Anna Elizabeth Denton of California, and Laura Jane Denton of Galveston; brother, Harold E. Wuthrich and wife, Mary of Palacios; sisters-inlaw, Helen Wuthrich of Wharton, Geraldine Wuthrich of Pierce, and Lee Wuthrich and husband, Arnold A. Wuthrich of Henrietta; and many nieces and nephews.

Mr. Wuthrich was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Norbert A. Wuthrich and Edward E. Wuthrich; and grandson, Nathan Frederick Denton.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 19 at 2 p.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Wharton with Pastor Barry Sharp officiating.

Burial followed in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.

Pallbearers were Dr. Darrell Smith, Keith Kresta, Barry Wuthrich, Dennis Wuthrich, Kenneth Wuthrich, Glenn Wuthrich, Robert Wuthrich, and David Wuthrich.

Honorary pallbearers were Arnold A. Wuthrich, Tommy E. Smith, Delvin Wuthrich, Vernon Ullmann, Robert Baker, Harold W. Wuthrich, Bill Hubenak, Mark Wuthrich, and Bill Younger.

In lieu of usual remembrances, the family requests memorials to St. John’s Lutheran Church, 614 Pecan Street, Wharton, Texas 77488; or Hospice Support Care, 1102 N. Mechanic Street, Suite B, El Campo, Texas 77437.

Funeral services were under the direction of the Wharton Funeral Home in Wharton.

Bishop for Czech Catholic immigrants in USA to speak at Westfest polka mass Bishop Peter Esterka, Californiabased bishop for Czech Catholics who have immigrated to the United States will conduct a Polka Mass at 10:15 a.m. on Sunday, September 4 during the 30th Annual Westfest Festival. The mass in the Westfest Cultural Amphitheater will be open to all visitors.

Bishop Esterka was born in 1935 in the Southern Moravia region of Czechoslovakia. He remembers spending the closing days of World War II in a bomb shelter with his parents and younger sister as the front lines between German and Soviet troops were formed a few miles from his home.

A student at the Jesuit high school in Brno in 1948 when the Communists took over the government and outlawed the public practice of religion, he developed conflicts between him and the communist teachers who were assigned to educate area young people in party values. At one point, he was chastised during an interrogation before the secret police.

Free Admission to Tournament Players Non-Tournament Players Admission: $7 Children under 13 free with parent able for him, so in June, with two other young men friends, he cut through the barbed wire and crossed the heavily guarded border into Austria. His escape story has been published under the title, “Never Say Comrade.”

Following several months in an Austria refugee camp, he made his way to Rome, living at the Pontifical College Nepomucenum while studying philosophy and theology at the university.

He was ordained March 9, 1963, in the Basilica at St. John Lateran, and spent his first mission as assistant pastor of a parish in San Antonio. He returned to Rome and earned his doctorate in theology. For 30 years, he was a professor at the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul, Minnesota.

He began his work among Czech Catholic immigrants in 1978. In 1986, he was named Vicar of a min-

istry with Czech Catholics in the United States and Canada. In 1994, that jurisdiction was extended to include Australia and Western Europe. He was elevated to Bishop for Czech Catholics living outside to Czech Republic in 1999. From Orange County, California, he continues this ministry.

Westfest was founded in 1976 as a means for the West community, just north of Waco on Interstate 35, to raise funds for a variety of projects, including operational monies for youth programs, senior citizen activities, a community center, library, and other civic and cultural programs.

The Labor Day Weekend event is a family oriented fun-time that features ethnic foods and entertainment reflecting the West community’s Czech heritage.
