Editor’s Note

Celebrate the Youth of SPJST It’s the weekend that SPJST’s young people have been looking forward to all year. They’ve worked hard preparing all of the details for the big day. The SPJST State Youth Achievement Day is this Saturday, August 6 at the Frank W. Mayborn Convention Center in Temple. What an awesome day it will be! The youth of SPJST are absolutely incredible. They will entertain you. They will amaze you. They will inspire you. I have seen many of the talents and crafts that will be competing at this Saturday’s event. Wow! Totally awesome. You will be impressed. The SPJST youth and the program have a very special place in my heart. I spent 13 years in the program as a youth club member; three years as a youth leader; and six years as State Youth Director. State YAD is a very special day—to the youth, to the parents, to the youth leaders, and to the District Youth Counselors. It’s the day that the entire SPJST focuses on a very precious resource—our young people. I remember competing in my first State YAD as an anxious and nervous six-year-old with a handicraft—a gold-painted, macaroni-decorated, half-gallon cardboard milk carton that was a small plant holder. Although my entry did not place, I was so proud to receive a participation ribbon and be a part of the day. I remember, years later, winning a trophy at State YAD—what a special moment that was. And, the 39th SPJST State King and the 42nd SPJST State Queen will be crowned on Saturday. The lives of one of the young men and young women pictured on pages 12 and 13 will forever be changed when they are crowned king and queen. All of the past State Kings and State

Queens are listed on pages 10 and 11. I was curious which districts past kings and queens have represented: • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

16 kings from District Three 13 queens from District Three 11 kings from District Two 8 queens from District Six 6 queens from District Two 5 queens from District One 5 queens from District Five 3 kings from District One 3 kings from District Five 3 kings from District Seven 3 queens from District Seven 2 kings from District Six 2 queens from District Four 1 king from District Four

The lodge with the most state kings is Lodge 84, Dallas with six, followed by Lodge 47, Seaton with three. The lodges with the most state queens are Lodge 30, Taiton and Lodge 84, Dallas with six each, followed by Lodge 13, Dime Box; Lodge 20, Granger; Lodge 88, Houston; and Lodge 117, Robstown with three each. To all of the youth participating in this year’s State YAD—congratulations. We are proud of you. Best wishes in your competition, and I can’t wait to see you all. No Vestnik on August 24 Each year, the Vestnik publishes 50 issues. One of the weeks that we will not publish a Vestnik will be August 24. Please make plans now. Get your lodge and youth letters, advertisements, important dates, etc., in by Wednesday, August 10 for the Wednesday, August 17 Vestnik. Anything received after August 10 will be published in the August 31 Vestnik. Thank you for your attention. —SPJST—

Collecting Shoes at State YAD Here’s an easy way to make a great difference in a child’s life and commemorate the memory of a lost soldier. Thanks to District Five Youth Counselor Barbara Linney-Gonzales for sharing the following information. Before Gayle McDermott’s son Wesley was killed in Iraq, he talked about the Iraqi children often and how they touched his heart. But the one thing that bothered him most was the children had to use newspapers for shoes. Wesley’s birthday will be August 16, and in his memory,

collected shoes will be shipped to his unit for the children in Iraq. Everyone is encouraged to donate new or slightly used children’s shoes to the Iraqi children. All sizes—boys and girls—will be appreciated. The shoes will be shipped to Iraq by Jarvis International, a Houston company. Barbara will collect the shoes at State YAD on August 6 at the Mayborn Center in Temple. She and other District Five members will take them back to Houston. —SPJST—

Lodge 79 Corpus Christi reports on July meeting One of the biggest meetings in the years of Lodge 79, Corpus Christi was held July 17, 2005. A total of 115 members and guests came to the meeting and to help celebrate the 80th birthday of longtime Lodge 79 members—the Elzner twins, Agnes (Elzner) Burge and Jerry Elzner. We were happy to have District Seven Director Bob Bayer and District Seven Youth Counselor Wendy Pruski and Polly Bayer come and celebrate with us. Brother Bob and Sister Wendy brought a check to our Youth Leader Frances Klanika. It is a check for starting a youth club. Sister Frances is trying so hard to make the youth club grow. We voted to donate our monthly donation to TCHCC and voted to give a donation to a small village near Plzen, Czech Republic, that has put up a large stature of General Patton. This village is as far as U.S. troops were allowed to advance in Czechoslovakia. The two Jerrys met with the lady mayor and told her we would help her raise funds. Three other individuals also donated to the fund. The statue stands in front of an elementary school that will be renamed General Patton Elementary in September, 2005. Also, Sokol Corpus Christi will be celebrating its 75th birthday with a big dinner. Many of our members are also Sokol members. So put the 20th of August on your calendar. We will be having a catered dinner, but we need RSVPs, okay? Invite your family and friends, but let either of the Jerrys know how many are coming. More info will be forthcoming. After many door prizes were given out, we enjoyed a great meal of baked District Seven Director Bob Bayer and District Seven Youth Counselor Wendy Pruski, left, present Lodge 79, Corpus Christi Youth Leader Frances Klanika with a check for the remainder of the new youth club start-up funds. The check was presented during the July lodge meeting.

chicken and sausage and all the trimmings along with kolaches, buchta, and cake. Near the end of the meal, President Jerry talked about the trip to the Czech Republic and finding his roots. Birthday Jerry talked about receiving the prestigious Gratias Agit award from the Czech government. The meeting of awardees from around the world was very interesting. Included in the group was Tomas Bata of Bata shoe fame. His father started in Zlin, but they escaped to Canada when the Nazis came. He has 58,000 employees in 68 countries. We stayed in a 15th century castle that has been converted into a four-star hotel about 20 miles from Prague. After all were through eating, we were entertained by Crazy Paul, a magician/comedian. He did a great job. One of our youth clubbers, Brock Sijansky, had Crazy Paul teach him a few tricks so at our August meeting, Brock will entertain us. A great . . . I repeat great . . . big thank you to all who helped—decorators, bakers, servers, bar help, kitchen help, and janitors. I did not name anyone because I’d hate to leave anyone off the list. Once again, thanks to all for your gifts, prayers, cards, and for coming to help us celebrate. Fraternally, Jerry Elzner, FAC —SPJST—

Lodge 79, Corpus Christi members travel to the Czech Republic On June 23, 2005, our own Jerry L. Elzner was awarded the 2005 Jan Masaryk Gratias Agit award from the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic. The award is received by only 14 individuals and three Czech organizations from the entire world. These awardees promote Czech culture, ideals, music, and heritage. It started last November when the Czech Embassy in the U.S. contacted Jerry asking if he would consider the nomination for the Gratias Agit Award. The award is named for Jan Masaryk, a former foreign minister, the son of T.G. Masaryk, first president of Czechoslovakia. “It was quite an honor just to be nominated and thought that was as far as it would go” Jerry said. “After all, the applicants are chosen from all over the world!” In May, Jerry was notified that he was to be a recipient. He said he was overwhelmed with disbelief all day long. What an honor! The Czech

Government paid his airfare and lodging. He and a guest were to be housed in the Stirin Castle, a 15th century fortress renovated into a beautiful four-star hotel about 15 miles from Prague. Collecting Shoes at State YAD Here’s an easy way to make a great difference in a child’s life and commemorate the memory of a lost soldier. Thanks to District Five Youth Counselor Barbara LinneyGonzales for sharing the following information. Before Gayle McDermott’s son Wesley was killed in Iraq, he talked about the Iraqi children often and how they touched his heart. But the one thing that bothered him most was the children had to use newspapers for shoes. Wesley’s birthday will be August 16, and in his memory, col-

lected shoes will be shipped to his unit for the children in Iraq. —SPJST—

Be Safe When It Comes to Firearms Keeping our children safe from gun violence is the top priority for all Americans. Recent school shootings and ongoing street violence prove that we cannot always protect them from gun violence in the community and at school. However, we can take steps to make sure they are safe from gun-related incidents. Owning a gun is a right — but not for everyone. Certain categories of people are not allowed to buy or own a gun. This includes people under a certain age. The laws on gun ownership are governed by State and Federal law and they vary widely. While Americans have the right to own guns, they have the responsibility to store those guns safely and out of children's reach. Approximately 35 to 40 percent of households own at least one gun; 74 percent own two or more. It has been estimated that 30 percent of all handguns are stored unlocked and loaded in the owner’s home or vehicle, and more than half of all guns are stored unlocked. That’s when things can get dangerous. More often than not, a young person handles a gun out of curiosity -- and then it accidentally goes off. It is crucial that children know what to do if they find a gun: • • • •

What do you do if you and your friends find a gun? What if you are by yourself? If you find a gun, do not touch it. Notify an adult, who can confiscate the firearm and then turn it over to the police. Getting an adult may be as simple as calling out to a passerby, it may mean using a cell phone to call the police, or it may mean staying with the gun while a friend goes to get help. If you are alone, you may have to leave the gun where it is and go get help yourself. If there are younger children in the area, you should tell them that you have an emergency and send them to get an adult while you stay with the gun. What if you see someone showing off a gun to their friends, or if you see the gun in somebody's locker or in somebody’s backpack? It is illegal for any student to bring a gun to school, and it puts you and everybody else needlessly in danger, regardless of whether the student intends to use the gun or not. Loaded guns can and do accidentally discharge. The risk is much greater when the gun is jostling around in a backpack, where the safety can easily be dislodged and the trigger pulled by items being yanked in and out of the bag all day long. The rule to follow here is easy: Tell a trusted adult! There is no exception to this rule. Sources: kidshealth.org; adcouncil.com; agsfoundation.com This SPJST Cross Training project is not intended as a complete course in gun safety and is not a substitute for formal, qualified instruction in the handling, use, or storage of firearms. The guidelines herein should be considered options to minimize the chance of an accident occurring in the home or school.

Stop. Don’t touch. Get away. Tell a trusted adult right away.

Fill in the Blank

Gun owners can help prevent tragic injuries and deaths by safely storing the gun in a secure place and locking the weapon itself.

Fill in the blank in each question to make the answer true. 1.

The laws on gun ownership are governed by _________________________ and _________________________ law and they vary greatly.

Be Prepared As you read through these scenarios, think about what you would do in each of the situations. It may seem silly, but mentally preparing yourself ahead of time is the best way to make sure you don’t make a foolish decision under pressure.

2. Approximately _______ to _______ percent of households own at least one gun. 3. It has been estimated that _______ percent of all handguns are stored unlocked and loaded in the owner’s home or vehicle. 4. If you should find a gun follow these four steps: 1. Stop. 2. Don’t touch. 3. Get Image: Science Education Research Page (SERP)

Rangers field. This was such an honor. I played the position of pitcher. I also played this summer for the Ennis Little League. I played the positions of pitcher and shortstop. We won City Championship! I also won the All Star title. This week, we played in the district games. We did pretty well, but we lost last night. That was okay because now I get to go to District Three Camp this weekend. I also won the District Eight Freshman All Tournament Player last night, which was only handed out to 12 players in the whole district! I was so honored. Besides baseball, I worked a lot on my projects for YAD this summer. I won first place for a knife rack that I made out of wood so I will be going to state.

Rovněž Lori Najvarová nabídla naší nadaci spolupráci a ráda by natočila film o naší nadaci a pomohla s propagací naší nadace ve světě. —SPJST—

By Hana Konecna

Dear Vestnik Readers, My name is Hana Konecna. I was born in the Czech Republic, Czechoslovakia then, in 1976. My parents are teachers (my mother still teaches the Czech language and history), which might be the reason I have been brought up to cherish my country’s traditions. By the way, I am a teacher myself now. Moreover, our family got my ancestral home when I was born, and since then, they did not modernize a thing there. Therefore, I had the opportunity to lead two lives: in the “cottage” with wooden floors and white beam ceilings, a tiled stove so hot and calming, flowers everywhere, dried arranged between window frames in winter time; and my “town”—cultural life in Olomouc, a nice place in the center of Moravia. What a balance! I am an adult, unfortunately, today and guess what – I and my husband settled right in the village, to be exact, “next door,” where my ancestral home still stands. I simply could not feel happier anywhere in

the world. I have been to many European countries, in America also, but nothing can be done with my strong emotional bond. Which leads my recollections back to Texas, where we met so many Czech heritage-enthusiastic people. It is extraordinary how mightily the ethnic influence is still evident in Texas these days. And, the reason I write this letter? I would like to encourage anybody interested in the Czech Republic, the country in the heart of Europe—its’ life and traditions—to write his or her inquiry to my email address and then read the response in the Vestnik. I look forward to hearing from you soon! My two email addresses are: hkonecna@atlas.cz hkonecna2492@students.mclennan.edu Next time, I would like to report on an event held from July 4 to 6 this year in Roznov pod Radhostem (Wallachian area) open-air folk museum. —SPJST—
