SPJST proudly salutes “Old Glory” By Gina M. Pasfield Temple Daily Telegram No amount of heat could scorch the patriotic impression left on people at SPJST’s annual observance of Flag Day on Tuesday, June 14. About 50 people gathered outside of the SPJST Home Office on Main Street in Temple to pay tribute to our flag, our country and our troops. “I look forward to this every year,” Temple Mayor Bill Jones, III said at the ceremony. “We don’t take enough time to honor our country, and this is a great way to do that.” Chief Sam Hill of the U.S. Navy Sam Antonio Recruiting District did the honor of raising the flag at 9 a.m., after which everyone recited the Pledge of Allegiance, led by Temple Chamber of Commerce President Ken Higdon. Extraco Senior Vice President Sam Farrow sang

the National Anthem. Jones presented the Flag Day Proclamation, where he spoke to the crowd about the history of the flag and proclaimed June 14 as Flag Day in Temple. “Happy Flag Day everyone—Long may it wave,” his speech concluded. Justice Bob Pemberton of the Third Court of Appeals of Texas delivered the day’s message, where he reminisced about attending these ceremonies as a child with his father. Justice Pemberton commended the SPJST for always remembering Flag Day and the soldiers currently fighting, somet i m e s paying with thier lives, for Shannon Godwin freedom overseas. Rogers Middle School sixthgrader Shannon Godwin, 10, recited her winning SPJST Flag Day essay that highlighted patriotism and September 11. Shannon’s mother, Debbie Godwin, said her daughter enjoys writing poetry and doing a journal. “She just sat down and started writing,” Mrs. Godwin said. “She’s a very talented writer.” Sitting up on stage with the day’s speakers was the

Stanley Broz family. A memorial tribute was paid to SPJST District Four Director Broz, who died on April 28. Patriotic songs were sung at the end of the ceremony and those gathered in the sun around the SPJST building were invited inside for refreshments and relief from the heat.
