SPJST records 499 applications written through February in Challenge 2005 campaign Through the end of February, the SPJST received 499 applications for insurance and annuity certificates. The goal of the Challenge 2005 membership drive is to write at least 2,640 applications.

In conjunction with SPJST’s Challenge 2005 program, local lodges have been assigned application quotas for the year. The lodge quota has been based largely on past performance and perceived potential.

The fourth column, “Youth Club Quota,” applies to those lodges with youth clubs and reflects applications written for members between the ages of 0 and 17. “Youth Club” totals are applied toward the lodge’s total quota.

The sixth column, “Lodge Incentive Count,” reflects the number of new certificates issued for the Lodge Recognition and Incentive Program.

Lodge Officers, Leaders encouraged to attend Fraternal Flight School The sale of life insurance and annuities represents a very important part of the SPJST. Obviously—it’s the basis for membership and an important source of funding for our fraternal activities. However, by and of itself, it does not represent the only benefit to which the member is entitled. Membership in the SPJST can also be an invitation and an opportunity for each of us to lead, to encourage, to console and to inspire our fellow man.

Our lodges provide us with a natural structure and resources from which adults as well as youth members can reach out to each other and to their communities.

Where will your lodge be three years from now? That’s a good question—and it will be an even better one three years from now because then you will be living the answer.

Whether or not you like the answer doesn’t have to be a guessing game or left to chance. Your lodge’s future will be what you make it. To help you in this journey, lodge officers are invited to participate in one of the seven fraternal workshops that will be held throughout the state later this spring. The workshops are called “Fraternal Flight Schools” as a tie-in with our 2005 SPJST theme “Soaring to New Heights.”

Successful lodge meetings require a certain amount of structure.

Knowing what will be happening in the meeting creates a sense of comfort. A format that is the same for every meeting enables the group to efficiently take care of regular business, leaving the majority of the time to work on important agenda items.

Fraternal Flight School will address the fundamentals of holding effective lodge meetings and building a successful lodge program.

Fraternal Flight School will be divided into three parts. Part One of the workshop will cover meeting structure with an emphasis on parliamentary procedure. Part Two will suggest procedures for establishing and implementing long-term goals

District Four Spring Meeting Sunday, April 24, 2005 The Center for Housing and Community Development in Tahoka Dear District Four Members, SPJST Lodge 215, South Plains would like to invite all District Four members to the district spring meeting. It will be held on Sunday, April 24, 2005, at The Center for Housing and Community Development.

The Center is located at the corner of South Third and Avenue K in Tahoka.

Registration will begin at 10:30 a.m.

District Three Fall Meeting and Membership Drive Lodge 92, Fort Worth • October 24, 2004 Sister Mary Steinman, District President, called the meeting to order at 11:02 a.m. Everyone was asked to stand for the Posting of Colors. The Pledge of Allegiance and Youth Pledge were led by Gena Weeks.

A youth program was then held.

Sister Bessie Petr announced the District King Nick Culliton of Lodge 183, Arlington and Queen Leslie Sims of Lodge 84, Dallas. The youth gave treat bags to all the adult members while dressed in their Halloween costumes. All youth members that were dressed in costume received a cash prize.

Brother Gordon Hubenak, Lodge 92 President, welcomed everyone on behalf of the lodge. Sister Kay Weeks, District First Vice President, gave response to the welcome.

Sister Mary Steinman asked all adults that were in costumes to stand in front of the podium. There was Sister Kay Weeks of Lodge 183.

There were no judges appointed since there was only one person to participate.

The youth were dismissed to conduct the youth district meeting in another area.

Sister Mary Steinman asked for the reading of the minutes. A motion was made by Sister Patricia Sill of Lodge 183 to accept the minutes as published in the Vestnik. Motion was seconded by Brother Albert Kubala of Lodge 92, Fort Worth. The motion passed.

District Treasurer, Sister Martha Durham, gave the treasurer’s report.

Sister Mary Steinman introduced Supreme Lodge President Brother Brian Vanicek to the membership and

asked him for a report from the Home Office. He reported that everything is doing well in Home Office. There was an appointment of a new State Fraternal Activities Coordinator.

Brother Michael Morris will be taking on this position. A new State Youth Director was appointed.

Trissa Clement will be filling this position.

He is hoping to promote a bigger involvement in the next State Fair of Texas held in Dallas. The SPJST will be taking part in the Texas Folklife Festival to be held on June 12. He asked that all youth clubs work for a larger goal. He announced that Lodge 6 received first place on their scrapbook at the Texas Fraternal Congress.

Sister Mary Steinman thanked Brother Vanicek for his report.

Sister Mary Steinman turned the podium over to District Three Director Johnnie Krizan for his report.

Brother Krizan stated that he was recovering and doing well. He thanked everyone for the cards and everything. He told everyone to be open to new ideas for growth and new clubs. There is a new quota system being worked on to measure your lodge’s growth. He mentioned that there were still some lodges that needed to send in a copy of their 990 forms. The SPJST Home Office continues to make loans. The Vestnik will be printed in color with a new printer—Temple Daily Telegram.

Everyone should remember the college scholarships. He indicated that the closing date for new policies this year would be December 30, 2004.

He thanked everyone for letting him represent District Three. Brother Krizan returned the podium back to

Sister Steinman asked for Committee reports: Insurance by Sister Martha Durham and Brother Jerry Kucera— They reminded all lodges to encourage their sales representatives to continue selling policies. Also, they asked members to make sure to turn in all cards for potential members.

Finance by Brother Michael Galler—The committee has not met since the convention.

By-Laws by Brother Al Kercho— No report at this time.

S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home by Brother George Pauling—The Rest Homes requested funds from the delegates at the convention. They did receive $5,000 for each home and one 16-passenger vehicle of the two needed. He thanked the delegates that supported and addressed the other delegates on this request. Taylor home is in good shape with 90 percent occupancy.

Needville’s administrator resigned.

The person taking his place lasted one month and then quit. The new person seemed to be more qualified. The assisted living is doing great. It already has 19 residents out of the 24 spaces available. Everyone must see this facility.

FAC by Brother George Pauling— Everything has been covered. Brother Krizan gave exact cash to Gladys Yates Fund. Election of Fratenalist of the Year should be held at your next lodge meeting.

Sister Mary Steinman went over future meeting and YAD dates: The Spring Meeting 2005 will be held at Lodge 6, Cottonwood on April 24, 2005.

District YAD 2005 will be held at Lodge 84, Dallas on June 26, 2005.

Fall Meeting 2005 will be held on October 25, 2005. No lodge has indicated that they will host.

Spring Meeting 2006 will be held at Lodge 154, Fort Worth on April 23, 2006.

District YAD 2006 will be held at Lodge 6, Cottonwood on June 25, 2006.

First Vice President, Sister Kay Weeks reported that there were 92

members in attendance.

Sister Martha Durham of Lodge 92 announced that any proceeds from today’s Fun Day will be donated to the Gladys Yates Scholarship Fund.

Sister Durham suggested that the District donate $1,000 to the Gladys Yates Scholarship Fund. A motion was made by Brother Jerry Milan of Lodge 154 to make a donation of $1,000 to the fund. Motion was second by Brother George Pauling of Lodge 66. Motion passed. Sister Durham then reminded people to purchase prize drawing tickets that were being sold. Drawing will be held after lunch.

Sister Mary Steinman introduced the judges for the youth ornament contest. They are Sisters Patricia Sill of Lodge 183, Milka Bralic of Lodge 183, and Helen Kubala of Lodge 92.

Sister Steinman then introduced the District Three Royalty—King Nick Culliton, Duke Tommy Weeks, Queen Leslie Sims, and Duchess Elizabeth Cowan. Sister Steinman asked Leslie Sims to say the prayer for the lunch meal. The meeting was dismissed for lunch.

The meeting resumed at 1:30 p.m.

As little as one dollar can make a big difference.

Old Business There was no old business to discuss.

Publication by Sister Bessie Petr— The Committee met with Vestnik Editor Melanie Zavodny to discuss the Vestnik. They will meet again on January 8, 2005.

Youth Report by Sister Bessie Petr—The youth of the district will be going to Six Flags on December 4, 2004. All youth leaders have been asked to go back to their lodges and work on activities and dates to be discussed at the spring meeting. Sister Mary Steinman asked if there were any questions. There were no questions. Sister Rosie Steinman thanked Sister Petr for what all she does.

ENC by Brother John Engelke— He thanked everyone for their support. He has been working on getting different things for the youth at the summer camps. He has contacted the Waco Zoo about coming out to the District Three camp.

LAM by Brother Jerry Milan— They are hiring a person to help with the remodeling of the building for the Museum, Library and Archives.

Lodge 9, Snook sets July 3 Family Fun Day The March 2, 2005, meeting of Lodge 9, Snook was called to order

by President Donnie Hejl.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led

by Hayden and Hannah Kovar and C.J., John and Kim Wheeler.

The minutes were approved as read. David Kovar gave the hall manager’s report. A new member was accepted, and a termination was accepted. Donnie Victorick gave the treasurer’s report.

Marie Shelfer gave the youth leader’s report. There were 35 youth club members present and 17 adults.

On April 17, the youth club will go to the nursing home in Caldwell and play bingo with the residents. Next month’s service project is to bring your soda tabs to the meeting for Ronald McDonald’s House.

John Hoelscher visited the youth club meeting and the adult meeting.

The ice cream sundaes were a big hit.

Everyone enjoy meeting him and are looking forward to another successful year. Way to go, John. He gave highlights of the state youth program.

The lodge voted to send $50 to the SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive.

Johnnie I. Krajca named Ennis Polka Festival Grand Marshall Dear Readers, I am proud to announce that Johnnie I. Krajca, who is a member of our Lodge 25, Ennis adult lodge, has been named the Grand Marshall of the 39th A n n u a l N a t i o n a l Johnnie I. Krajca Polka Festival in Ennis.

Mr. Krajca has been hosting the “Sunday Morning Polka Show” at KBEC radio for almost 41 years.

The Festival is held on Memorial Day weekend.

Lodge 25, Ennis to recognize members SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis had its regular monthly meeting on March 10, 2005. The meeting was preceded

by Mildred Dolezal’s homemade stew dinner with all the fixins— everything from your choice of plain or jalapeno corn bread and fresh fruit to German chocolate cake. As always, everything—especially the stew—was delicious. Thank you, Mildred.

President Eugene Dolezal opened the meeting at 7:30 p.m. Sergeant-atArms/Flag Bearer Johnnie Krajca led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. There was a moment of silence for any deceased members. On the sick list were Annie Martinek, John Gallagher, and Scooter Holland. By the time this is published, we are hoping that everyone is back to good health.

William C. Tesmer of Lodge 29, Taylor Achieves Grand Age of 96

The

SPJST congratulates Brother William C. Tesmer, a member of Lodge 29, Taylor, who celebrated his 96th birthday on March 10, 2005. Brother Tesmer is now entitled to all SPJST member benefits with no further dues or assessments required.

William C. Tesmer’s full name, as it appears on his birth certificate, is Carl Alexander Wilhelm Tesmer.

“Most people knew me as Willie during the years I lived in the Taylor, Texas, area.

Friends and acquaintances in Austin know me as Carl,” Brother Tesmer says.

William was born on March 10, 1909, in Sagerton, Texas, in Haskell County to Fritz Tesmer and Emma Teichelman Tesmer. William married Edith Ethel Templeton Tesmer.

The couple has two sons—William Tesmer and his spouse, Barbara, who live in Corsicana, Texas; and Ray and Fowler, Kay Lynn Kovar, Johnnie I. Krajca, Margaret Krajca, and Betty Macalik.

We also nominated 22 Everyday Heroes. They will receive their pins at a special presentation at a later date. SPJST is a fraternal lodge and quite frankly, I consider every member an Everyday Hero. Thank each and every member for all that you do.

William farmed in the Taylor area for 33 years of his adult life. After he discontinued farming, William worked for the State of Texas in Austin for 13 and one-half years.

Both of William’s parents immigrated to the United States from Germany in the late 1800s.

William had six sisters and one brother, all deceased.

Some memories of William’s life activities include farming with a single row planter and cultivator pulled by mules, raising cotton, corn, and maize crops, raising animals for use by the family, helping his neighbors with their heavy workloads, hunting doves, quail, and deer, and fishing with a cane pole.

William resides in Austin his wife.

Tammy Whatley gave the treasurer’s report. Vice President Donna Pasemann talked about several activities including the State 42 Domino Tournament on April 2 in Cottonwood; the District Two Spring Meeting on March 20 in Seaton; and volunteers are needed for Project Val Verde from May 31 to June 2. Donna also suggested we donate money to the Relay for Life cancer walk to be held in Taylor on April 15. Frances Tallas made a motion to donate $25, and Jesse Pospisil seconded the motion. The motion passed.

Hall Painting and Repair Work Jesse Pospisil gave the Property Committee report. He discussed the painting and repair work that has been done inside the hall, upstairs and downstairs, and on the outside of the building. About 90 percent of the work has been completed. We had extra painting done inside the build-

ing that was not included in the original bid. A variety of other items needing attention at the hall were discussed.

Fried Fish Lunch—May 1 Jesse discussed whether we should serve fried chicken or fish for our annual May Fest lunch on May 1, 2005. After a vote, it was decided to serve fried fish for the lunch from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. We are also checking to see if our Wednesday night band will be able to play during the afternoon after the fried fish lunch. We will have more discussion on this event at next month’s meeting.

Three new lodge members were announced.

They are Franklin Schlesinger, Brandon Safarik, and Eva Lyn Langley. Edmond Tate made a motion that they be accepted, and Jesse Pospisil seconded the motion. The motion passed.

Frances Tallas, Frankie Pustejovsky, and Kristen Rieger celebrate birthdays in March.

Mary Jane Pustejovsky donated door prizes. Mark Basil volunteered to donate the door prizes next month.

Lodge 47, Seaton to honor longtime members April 3 Dear Brothers and Sisters, The March 6, 2005, meeting of Lodge 47, Seaton was presided over

Those on the sick list were Sister Vlasta Divis and Georgia Sodek.

Officers’ Reports Calvin thanked all members who worked in the month of February and thanked Woodrow Marek for help at a special event and thanks to those who worked at the Straight Domino Tournament this past Saturday.

Dolores Skrabanek spoke on the SPJST Awards Banquet, held in Killeen. We will again have the goal of 50 new members in 2005 and 20 youth members.

The work days at Camp Val Verde are set for May 31, June 1 and 2 until finished. So if you can volunteer your help with painting, etc., it will be appreciated.

Sister Gladys Marek, Treasurer, gave her monthly report as did the chairpersons.

A special thanks was extended to Rosemary Chudej for all the time she served as bar chairperson. Thanks, Rosemary!

The audit of all books will be April 8 so if you have books to be audited, please be there at 7 p.m.

The picnic is right around the corner. All of the chairpersons will be chosen, and they will be calling on you for help or best yet, why not volunteer?

Youth Leader Heidi Bartek gave her report of 13 youth, one visitor, Colton Regan, and one new member, Justin Kraatz, who also helped to carry out the Texas flag. She also invited everyone to the following Easter egg hunts—at the District Two Spring Meeting on March 20; the SPJST-sponsored Easter Eggstravaganza on March 26; and the local lodge hunt following the April 3 meeting which also will honor the 50-, 75-, and age 96-year members.

We will have a covered dish meal after the meeting and Easter egg hunt.

The meeting of SPJST Lodge 66, Waco was called to order by President John Engelke on February 20, 2005, at 2:30 p.m., at Linden Hall in Elm Mott with all officers present with the exception of Youth Leader Debbie Galler. There were 19 members present at today’s meeting.

Members stood for a moment of silent prayer for deceased member Loyce Corsbie and former lodge member, Linda Jean Steinhauser.

Secretary Dana McAdams read the minutes of the January 16 meeting, and they were approved as read.

Sister Dana also read correspondence from President of the Supreme Lodge Brian Vanicek concerning property taxes and on the Awards Banquet concerning mileage.

Chairman of the Board George Pauling had Secretary of the Board Darlene Engelke read the minutes of

the board meeting on this date.

Janie Dujka gave the Entertainment Committee report.

Today, the meal will consist of lasagna, garlic bread, salad, and desserts. For the March 20 meeting, the committee will furnish the food consisting of sloppy joes, chips, pickles, and dessert. Members do not have to bring any food.

FAC Mary Alice Langlotz reported that she received her monthly letter from State FAC Michael Morris.

On March 5, Lodge 47, Seaton will sponsor the State Straight Domino Tournament; on April 2, the State 42 Tournament will be hosted by Lodge 6, Cottonwood; and the State Horseshoe Tournament will be held on May 14 at Jimmy Bryant Horseshoe Complex in Waco.

Dorothy Veselka gave the Cheer and Condolence report.

Get well cards were sent to Mary Alice Langlotz who had eye surgery, and a sympathy card was sent to Mr. and Mrs. Joe Provazek on the death of his brother-in-law, Harold Buffington.

Due to the absence of Youth Leader Debbie Galler, President of the Youth Club Douglas Galler gave the report. There were three youth and one adult present at the youth meeting. The youth will distribute valentine gifts to the members today.

The youth will celebrate Easter at the March 20 meeting. The youth will attend the Easter Eggstravaganza in Temple on March 26. For the District Three Spring Meeting, the youth will enter a Design a Kroj Vest Contest.

There were no February birthday celebrants present today.

The 50-50 winner was George Pauling, and he donated his winnings to the Libbie Parma Trust Fund.

Lodge 81, Needville plans April 15 membership rally SPJST Lodge 81, Needville will host a membership rally on Friday, April 15 with a dinner and theatre show, and you’re invited! About “Driving Miss Daisy” Winner of the 1988 Pulitzer Prize, Uhry’s play is an affecting study of the unlikely relationship between an aging, crotchety, white, southern Jewish lady and a proud, soft-spoken, black man. In the Deep South in 1948, just prior to the Civil Rights Movement, Daisy Werthan’s “driving privileges” have been revoked by her protective son after yet another accident. He has hired Hoke Coleburn, a black man, to drive his mother.

Daisy regards Hoke with disdain, and he is not impressed with her patronizing tone and latent prejudice. In a series of revealing scenes spanning 25 years, the two, despite their mutual differences, grow ever closer to and more dependent on each other.

Buried in this poignant and often humorous script is the stark truth about stereotypes and ignorance.

Namely that familiarity, friendship and love can overcome boundaries drawn by religion or race if a person is willing to let them.

Lodge 87, Temple wins gold award at banquet The meeting of Lodge 87, Temple was called to order by President Dan Kacir. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited and a moment of silence was observed for departed members.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. There was no treasurer’s report due to the absence of the treasurer.

Bertha Capps gave her report on the SPJST Awards Banquet, held at the Killeen Civic and Conference Center, and presented a plaque to the lodge for winning the gold award.

Diane Troy gave her report on the activities of the district.

Trish gave her report on the youth club and stated that they will be receiving four new members soon.

Lodge 79 member competes in contest Anna Michelle Burke entered the Czech Heritage Society of Texas Miss Texas Czech-Slovak Pageant, held in Victoria on March 19, 2005. The contest winner represents Texas in Wilber, Nebraska, and competes for the Miss USA Czech-Slovak crown.

Anna is a freshman at Texas A&M, Corpus Christi. Anna’s kroj is from Strani, Umerske Hradiste, Czech Republic.

Lodge 88, Houston to host Czech SpringFest The Tenth Annual Czech SpringFest, sponsored by the Czech Heritage Society of Texas—Harris County Chapter, is Sunday, April 10, 2005, at SPJST Lodge 88, Houston, located at 1435 Beall Street at 15th Street in the Heights. Admission is $5 for adults with children ages 10 and under admitted free.

The SpringFest will benefit the CHS Library.

A traditional Czech Sunday dinner will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for $7 for adults and $5 for children ages 10 and under. Sauerkraut and sausage will be served after 2 p.m.

Other activities will include the Houston International Dancers; Czech cultural booths; ceramic artist Ludmila Vaskova of the Czech Republic exhibiting her art; the Country Store with kolaches, pastries, canned goods, handicrafts, and more; a genealogy room; silent auction with more than 100 items; and games for the young guests.

Lodge 92 Fort Worth sets spring events The monthly meeting of Lodge 92 was held on Sunday, March 13, 2005.

A moment of silence was observed in memory of Martha Durham, our Lodge 92 Vice President who recently passed away. Our thoughts and prayers remain with the Durham family in their time of sorrow.

The 2005 By-Law Committee— Chairman Joe Kozel, Kenneth Krivanek, and Ed Scaff—handed out the recommendations for amending our Local Lodge By-Laws to comply with those of the Supreme Lodge that were passed at the state convention which was held in June, 2004. The members present at this month’s meeting viewed the proposed changes, and those members who are present at next month’s meeting, on April 10, will vote on these changes.

I would like to recognize Hall Managers Joyce and Frank Tesar who have been managing the hall for 25 years on March 12, 2005. They have received many compliments over the

Joyce has always done her best to keep the hall decorated, and she continues to do specialty decorations for such events as Czech Heritage Day, and the Christmas season. For many years now, Joyce and Frank have done a wonderful job.

Congratulations on 25 years of service.

Two Great Bands Hall Manager Joyce Tesar reminded the members of the special bands that will be playing at the hall this month and next. First, Don Peachey from Burnett, Wisconsin, will be here on Sunday, March 20 from 2 to 6 p.m. Next, Barefoot Becky and the Ivanhoe Dutchmen from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, will play for our listening and dancing pleasure on April 17, also from 2 to 6 p.m. Admission for both of these dances will be $8 for adults and $4 for teens.

Joyce also told the members of plans to move our polka, waltz/variety dances from the third Sunday of each month to the fourth Sunday of each month, beginning in May. Dance time would remain as is, from 2 to 6 p.m.

Czech Dinner and Dance—May 22 Be sure and mark your calendars for our Third Annual Czech Dinner and Dance, which will take place on Sunday May 22, 2005. In addition to the traditional Czech dinner of roast pork, dumplings and sauerkraut, sausage and the trimmings, Czech and Then Some from Ennis will be providing some great music for your toe-tappin’, listening and dancing pleasure. Ticket prices are $15 in advance, which includes dinner and dance. The price will be $16 at the door. I’ll have more information on this in future articles.

Today was a beautiful, but breezy day for the youth of our lodge to have their Easter egg hunt. There were nine youth in attendance, and all had a great time. In addition, the adults had a good time with their “beverage” hunt. I will have more on this later this month.

Lodge 79, Corpus Christi member accepted for leadership forum Brianna Elzner, a student in the Athena Program at Baker Middle School, was recently accepted for the People to People World Leadership Forum.

Brianna was nominated and accepted for the honor based on scholastic merit, civic involvement and leadership potential.

She will join a select group of students in Washington, D.C., from March 14 to 20 to earn high school credit while studying leadership and exploring some of the United States’ most prominent monuments and institutions.

Brianna is a member of Lodge 79, Corpus Christi and is the daughter of Leonard and Susan Elzner.

Chris and Veronica Vojacek gave us a very good and informative report about the SPJST Awards Banquet held February 26 in Killeen, and they brought us a nice plaque.

Dallas Circle of Czech Women (Krouzek Ceskych Zen) President Bertha called the meeting to order. Esther Cunningham led us in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, and we remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of Flossie Tesar, mother of Joyce Moore.

Bertha welcomed 19 members and three men guests. It was good to see Liddie Pavelka has recovered from her fall.

Lodge 202 Jourdanton welcomes new member Lodge 202, Jourdanton welcomes its newest member, Emily Paige Pendergrass. Emily is two and one-half months old and is the daughter of Adam and Shara Pendergrass. Emily loves her bottle and she loves to be in bed with her mommy and daddy. Emily has two sets of grandparents, two sets of great-grandparents, and a great-great-grandmother.

Bertha says we need hostesses, and she handed around a paper for people to sign up to be hostesses.

Treasurer Rosie Julius was absent because she had an appointment with an eye doctor. Bertha handed out a copy of the treasury report and, with a correction, it was accepted as read.

Secretary Carole Faraizl read the minutes of the February meeting, and with a correction, they were accepted as read.

Carole read a letter to the Krouzek saying she was resigning as Membership Chairwoman as she has too many jobs to do for the Krouzek.

She is secretary, photographer, and secretary of the 70th Anniversary celebration.

Bertha said she accepted her resignation, and we appreciated the job she has done. Bertha asked for volunteers for the Membership Chairwoman position, and Lavine Lockleer volunteered to take the job.

Bessie Tydlaska brought a sympathy card for Joyce Moore for the members to sign. Bessie sent birthday cards to the March celebrants.

“Happy Birthday” was sung to all the celebrants.

Announcements Dallas Culture Society was not held on February 28. The next meeting will be March 7, 2005 at SPJST Lodge 84. It is an appreciation dinner catered by Bessie Petr. It is for all of the workers who helped at the Heritage Day at the State Fair. Social hour is at 7:30 p.m., and dinner will be served at 8 p.m.

Dallas Brno Sister City meeting will be March 10 at Sokol at 7 p.m.

Old Business A report of the 70th Anniversary celebration was given. We are working on the invitations and who to send them to. The program book will have a picture of the charter members and our recent picture of the 65th anniversary.

Our program is being worked on.

We will have an accordion player, Jim Bezbek, to play before our program.

The Dallas Czech Orchestra will play from 3 to 5 p.m.

Bertha handed out a paper of who will help on decorations, help Bessie Petr with the food, set up and clean up, and bringing pastry, cookies or small desserts that are finger foods Our program for March was Easter.

In Memoriam In Memory of Frances Kubala Funeral services for Frances Wasicek Kubala, 88, of Bellaire were held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, March 8, 2005, at the Davis-Greenlawn Funeral Chapel, Rosenberg.

Interment followed at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Rosenberg. The Reverend Charles Teykl officiated the services.

The family welcomed friends at the visitation from 5 to 9 p.m.

Monday, March 7, at the DavisGreenlawn Funeral Chapel, Rosenberg.

Frances was born March 9, 1916, in Wallis to Joe and Frances Wasicek and passed away on March 6.

She is survived by her loving husband of 69 years, Jerry L. Kubala; daughter, Jere Nell Claghorn and husband, James; grandchildren, Lisa McClintock, Kelly Claghorn, and Christopher Claghorn and wife, Holly; great-grandchildren, Emily, Katie, and Cullen Claghorn; sister, Louise Faltisek; numerous nieces and nephews; as well as many friends.

Preceding her in death were parents; brothers, Charles, William, Richard and John; and sisters, Mary Kopecky and Bessie Holub.

Frances loved the outdoors, and with their many friends, she and Jerry spent happy hours hunting, fishing, gardening, and dancing.

They belonged to several national vehicle clubs where they enjoyed fellowship, dominoes, and group dinners. They enjoyed traveling several times to the Oregon coast, cruising to Alaska, the Caribbean, and on the Mississippi River with Jim and Jere.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Rosenberg.

Frances will be greatly missed by all those who loved her.

Pallbearers were nephews, Jimmy Faltisek, John Faltisek, E.J. Faltisek, L.D. Wasicek, Robert Holub,

eggs for each of the tables. We had a table of Easter baskets, Easter bunnies and some eggs that Esther hand-carried from the Czech Republic. And, candy Easter eggs, too!

Resolution Committee, Winnifred Susan Willie Mae Kuykendall —SPJST—

Resolution of Sympathy We, the members. of the Resolution Committee of Lodge Slavonic Linden No. 66, Waco, Texas, on behalf of our membership, wish to express our deepest and sincerest sympathy to the family of our departed sister, LOYCE CORSBIE formerly of Waco, who died Friday, February 18, 2005, at the age of 85.

Services were held on Tuesday, February 22 at 1 p.m., at First Presbyterian Church. Burial took place at Oakwood Cemetery in Waco.

Sister Loyce was born January 17, 1920, in Alabama. She graduated from the University of Alabama with a business degree. She worked at the Veterans Hospital in its Human Resources Department. She will be remembered for her joy for life, giving of herself, strength of character, and good humor.

Sister Corsbie was preceded in death by her husband and local attorney, William Lance Corsbie.

Survivors include sons, Bill Corsbie of Austin and James Corsbie of Waco, and grandsons, Chris Corsbie of Austin and Ben Corsbie of Oakland, California.

May our departed sister rest in peace.

News of Members Bertha Malik thanked the Krouzek for the plaque we gave her for being Membership Chairwoman for many years. She said she found a special place to put it. She will always cherish it.

We are sorry to hear that Anne Oates, daughter of Helen Oates, is in

VĚSTNÍK the hospital. We hope they find a cure for her soon. Our thoughts and prayers are with Helen and family.

Youth Letters Section Lodge 1 Fayetteville Youth Club elects officers Dear Readers, Lodge 1, Fayetteville Youth Club had a fun-filled meeting on February 14, 2005. The meeting was held at the Fayetteville Community Center.

President John Cufr opened our meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance. After we opened the meeting, we gave our reports and elected new officers. They are President John Cufr; Vice President Brandon Lovell; Secretary Sarah Peeler; Treasurer/Reporter Bowyn Bauer; Parliamentarian Reese Weishuhn; and Activity Directors Kirby Cufr and Brandon Canik.

Lodge 9, Snook youth shares life’s observations Dear Vestnik Readers, Here are some of “Life’s Observations” that I thought you might enjoy . . .

• Every teenager should get a high school education even if they already know everything.

• I read recipes the same way I read science fiction. I get to the end and think, “Well, that’s not going to happen.”

• Health nuts are going to feel stupid someday, lying in hospitals dying of nothing.

• Have you noticed since everyone has a camcorder these days, no one talks about seeing UFOs like they use to.

• Why does a slight tax increase cost you $200 and a substantial tax cut save you 30 cents?

• There is a theory which states that if ever anybody discovers exactly what the universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened.

• How is it one careless match can start a forest fire, but it takes a whole box to start a campfire?

Macey Foster Lodge 17, New Tabor Youth Club welcomes new member, Macey Foster, age nine.

Macey is the daughter of Lisa and Danny Foster. She is a fourth grader at Caldwell Intermediate.

Her hobbies include softball, volleyball, and roping. She has one brother, Wyett.

• Doctors can be frustrating. You wait a month and a half for an appointment, an hour and a half in the outer office, another 30 minutes in the exam room and he says, “I wish you’d come to me sooner.”

Lodge 9, Snook Youth Club reports on March meeting Dear Vestnik Readers, The March 2, 2005, meeting of the Lodge 9, Snook Youth Club was called to order at 6:45 p.m. by CJ Wheeler. The Pledge of Allegiance and the Youth Club Motto were lead

by Landon Eldridge and Carlee See. There were 35 members present and 17 adults.

The treasurer’s report was given

by Bradley Shelfer. The secretary’s report was given by Nathan Sebesta.

There was no correspondence read.

Under old business, we discussed the beseda dancers, Adopt A County Road, and Relay for Life.

Under new business, we discussed costumes for beseda dancers and bingo at the nursing home in April and going to Pizza Hut afterwards.

SYD John Hoelscher provided ice cream and door prizes at our meeting.

Charity projects for the month of March were to bring recycled phone books and books for half-pint library.

Door prizes, crafts, games and jokes committee for the month of March were Kim Gaas, Shelby Hiatt, Rebekah Irick, and Josh Twaddle.

We made bluejay spirit ribbons.

Members with birthdays for the month of March include Ms. Ann and Kim Gaas, both on March 26.

The Lord’s Prayer was said in unison, and the meeting was adjourned at 7:25 p.m.

The next meeting is April 6 at 6:30 p.m. at the SPJST Hall.

Lodge 30, Taiton youth reports on district meeting I attended the District Six Spring Meeting in Moulton on Sunday, March 6. I had fun, and my brothers, Ryan and Steven, Jarret and I, learned a new game, Speed Stacks, that our new State Youth Director, Mr. John Hoelscher, taught us. It was a fun game of timed hand/eye coordination, and we taught it to the other youth members. The game helped keep us entertained during the business meeting. The weather was terrible, and we all had to stay inside.

The meal was really good. Our Lodge 30 had a lot of our youth members present and most participated in the Kroj Vest Design Contest.

Our club did very well. I can’t remember everyone who placed, but I received a first place with mine! I think Jarret got third, Steven got third, Ryan got second, Dillon got second, Donovan got first, and one of

the Fucik girls placed, too.

Our lodge did a spring plant drawing, and it was a success. It was an interesting day.

My First Deer Hunt

By Bowyn Bauer Lodge 1, Fayetteville After driving for what seemed like forever, we arrived late in the night at the deer camp in Mason.

Early the next morning, I was awakened by Teta telling me to get all bundled up—because it was January, and it was very cold . . . brrrr—to go on my first deer hunt.

Sitting in the stand with my uncle, we saw quite a lot of deer. A large doe appeared. I was very nervous and on the verge of crying at the thought of killing such a beautiful animal. My uncle told me that she did not have fawns so I pulled the trigger on my single shot 223, and she was down.

We waited in the deer stand

awhile, my heart was racing. We walked over to the doe, and tears filled my eyes. I had to think of dry sausage, slim jims, and all the good things that come from deer meat.

We took the doe back to the camp. She weighed 102 pounds.

Later, I found out that I split the heart in half. I had been watching the hunting channel on television and learned where to aim.

That afternoon, I hunted again and yep, I did it—another doe. It weighed 100 pounds. I hit the heart again. What an experience! It is one I will always remember. I cannot wait till next year—I get to shoot a spike!

CEFT Residency in Czech Music and Culture at UNT to honor Kostohryzs Born in 1898 in New Tabor, Texas, the Reverend Frank J. Kostohryz faithfully served the Unity of the Brethren Church in Texas until his death in 1971. Through the years, his ministry—mostly in the Czech language—touched almost every congregation in the Unity. Among these were congregations in West, Sealy, Seaton, Ennis, Holland, Smithville, Fayetteville, Vsetin, Temple, Ocker, Crockett, Snook, Caldwell, Dime Box, Dallas, Industry, Wesley, Nelsonville, New Tabor, Placedo and Anton. Reverend Kostohryz’s marriage to Hermina Hurta of Shiner, Texas, in 1924 had a profound effect—not only on his personal life—but his ministry as well.

She not only became his faithful wife and companion for life, but she also became essential as his chauffeur, organist and religious instructor in most of the congregations where he ministered.

In memory of his late father and mother, Dr. Frances Kostohryz recently donated more than $200,000 to help fund the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas (CEFT) Residency in Czech Music and Culture at the University of North Texas in Denton. The announcement was made at the recent CEFT Annual Meeting held at the SPJST Home Office in Temple. CEFT Legal Advisor Sidney Kacir worked extensively with Dr. Kostohryz in securing the gift for the residency which will promote Czech music and culture in the State of Texas through the exchange of Czech artists and educators, the staging of festivals and colloquia of Czech music, as well as conducting outreach throughout Texas, particularly in the Texas Czech population centers.

generations of Texans of Czech descent,” says CEFT President Marvin Marek. “Frank Kostohryz’s generous gift will help to keep that memory alive through the endowment which will be named in honor of his parents.” Dr. Kostohryz’s gift brings the total endowment fund to approximately $325,000. It will be considered fully funded when the amount reaches $400,000.

Founded in 1954 to support the teaching of the Czech language and culture at the high school and college levels, CEFT observed its 50th anniversary in 2004. Throughout the history of CEFT, many SPJST members have played key roles in the organization and in promoting its mission. The CEFT had a tradition of supporting education through scholarships until 1986. Thereafter, it has confined its fund raising efforts to the endowment of permanent study programs at Texas universities —something its founders had always envisioned. In 1991, the CEFT helped establish an endowed chair at the University of Texas, named the Texas Chair in Czech Studies. In 1999, the CEFT established the CEFT/William J. Hlavinka Czech Fellowship at Texas A&M University.

In recognition of its success in establishing the two educational programs at major universities in the US and in promoting Czech culture abroad, the CEFT received the prestigious Jan Masaryk Gratias Agit Award from the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2000. CEFT Chairman Clinton Machann attended the awards ceremony in Prague, where, on behalf of the CEFT, he accepted the award.

Czech Easter (Velikonoce) From www.myczechrepublic.com In the years before 1989 when Czechoslovakia became a free country again, the meaning of Easter (Velikonoce — from Veliké noci or Great Nights) was limited to the welcoming of spring. The religious connotations of Easter were suppressed under the communist regime.

Nowadays, people are again aware of the religious origin of Easter, but Easter has not become a serious religious holiday.

Easter in the Czech Republic is a fun time. Many traditions are still observed and practiced, especially in villages, and different regions may have their own traditions and customs.

Many symbols of Easter are related to the spring and beginning of new life. In the Czech Republic, Easter symbols include: Eggs and kraslice The hand-painted or decorated egg (kraslice) is the most recognizable symbol of Czech Easter. Easter eggs are decorated by girls to be given to boys on Easter Monday. There are many techniques to decorate Easter eggs and they usually require a certain level of skill. Different materials can be used, such as bee’s wax, straw (hay), watercolors, onion peels, and picture stickers. There are no limitations in creating pretty, colorful eggs.

A nationwide Easter egg contest is held in many Czech cities around Easter time.

Baby animals— lamb, bunny rabbit, chicken One Easter tradition is to bake a lamb, but in the Czech Republic real lamb is usually replaced by one made from gingerbread.

Pussywillow and pomlázka Young, live pussywillow twigs are thought to bring health and youth to anyone who is whipped with them. A pomlázka (from pomladit or “make younger”)—a braided whip made from pussywillow twigs—has therefore been used for centuries by boys who go caroling on Easter Monday and symbolically whip girls on the legs. Boys used to make their own pomlázky in the past (the more twigs, the more difficult it was to braid one), but this tradition and skill is long gone and pomlázky can be bought in stores and on the streets. Some men don’t even bother and use a single twig or even a wooden spoon!

Dousing Dousing a girl with water has a similar symbolic meaning as the pomlázka.

The color red Red and other bright colors symbolize health, joy, happiness and new life that comes with the spring.

The Days Before Easter Sunday Children finish school on Ugly Wednesday (Škaredá středa), which is a good idea because they need to spend some serious time on making Easter what it should be. In the evening of Green Thursday (Zelení čtvrtek), every boy in the village equips himself with a wooden rattle (řehtačka), which is specially made for the purpose, the boys form a group and walk through the village, rattling their rattles vigorously so the noise can be heard from afar. The meaning of the rattling is to chase away Judas. The same procedure repeats on Good Friday (Velkí pátek) and one more time on White Saturday (Bílá sobota) when the boys don’t only walk through the village but stop at every house in the morning and

rattle until they’re given money which they then split between themselves.

Easter Sunday Easter Sunday (Neděle velikonoční) is a day of preparations for Easter Monday.

Girls paint, color, and decorate eggs, if they haven’t done so before, and boys prepare their pomlázky!

Easter Monday Easter Monday (Pondělí velikonoční) is a day off, the day of the pomlázka. The origin of the pomlázka tradition (pomlázka meaning both the whip and the tradition itself) dates back to pagan times. Its original purpose and symbolic meaning is to chase away illness and bad spirits and bring health and youth for the rest of the year to everyone who is whipped with the young pussywillow twigs. In the past, pomlázka was not only used by boys to whip girls, but also by the farmer’s wife to whip the livestock, as well as everyone in the household, including men and children. Boys would whip girls lightly on the legs and possibly douse them with water, which had a similar symbolic meaning. An Easter carol, usually asking for an egg or two,

would be recited by the boy while whipping. The girl would then reward the boy with a painted egg or candy and tie a ribbon around his pomlázka.

As the boys progressed through the village, their bags filled up with eggs and their pomlázky were adorned with more and more colorful ribbons.

This tradition is still largely upheld, especially in villages and small towns, although it may have lost its symbolism and romance and is now performed mainly for fun. Some boys and men seem to have forgotten that the whipping is supposed to be only symbolic and girls don’t always like that. The reward has also changed—money and shots of plum brandy are often given instead of or in addition to painted eggs and candy. So by early afternoon, groups of happy men can be seen staggering along the road . . . All that aside, Easter still remains one of the most joyful and fun holidays on the Czech calendar.
