Bowling for a Cause Fraternalism in Action Are you ready for some fraternal fun? Coming up this Saturday, February 19, two Texas fraternals will challenge each other in a bowling match to raise funds for a great cause. It will be the SPJST versus Sons of Hermann Challenge Match at Showplace Lanes in Austin, Texas. Hermann Sons members will bowl on even-numbered lanes, and SPJST members will bowl on odd-numbered lanes. Total pin fall will determine the winner. The entry fee is $10 and proceeds will benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Walk-in registration will be accepted from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. For more information, contact SPJST Fraternal Services Specialist Tammy Martinez at (800) 727-7578.

By-Law Referendum Convention delegates will be voting on a proposed change to Article 93 of the SPJST By-Laws. Delegates are encouraged to watch their mail because complete information and ballots are arriving. The referendum addresses increasing the maximum amount for a mortgage loan to $400,000 from $250,000. Please see the letter from Supreme Lodge Secretary-Treasurer Lanita Anglin on page 4 of last week’s Vestnik.

Make Plans to Join Hands All lodges and youth clubs are encouraged to participate in JOIN HANDS DAY. JOIN HANDS DAY 2005 is May 7, and the Pre-Event Form is now available on the web at http://www.joinhandsday.org/scripts/ projects_register_pre.cfm.

Once your project is registered, it soon will be posted on the JOIN HANDS DAY Web site. The earlier you register, the more time your project has to be seen by potential volunteers, noticed by the media and reviewed for preliminary judging for a

JOIN HANDS DAY Excellence Award. If you can’t participate on Saturday, May 7 for religious or other reasons, please try to do a project on May 8. Last year, there were 14 awards presented around the world with only one American honored.

Seaton Star Hall is located five miles east of Temple on Highway 53.

Registration begins at 8 a.m., and play begins at 9 a.m. The fee is $7 which includes snacks and lunch.

SPJST records 188 applications written through January in Challenge 2005 campaign Through the end of January, the SPJST received 188 applications for insurance and annuity certificates.

The goal of the Challenge 2005 membership drive is to write at least 2,640 applications.

In conjunction with SPJST’s Challenge 2005 program, local lodges have been assigned application quotas for the year. The lodge quota has been based largely on past performance and perceived potential.

The fourth column, “Youth Club Quota,” applies to those lodges with youth clubs and reflects applications written for members between the ages of 0 and 17. “Youth Club” totals are applied toward the lodge’s total quota. The sixth column, “Lodge Incentive Count,” reflects the number of new certificates issued for the Lodge Recognition and Incentive Program.

Lodge 29, Taylor hosts successful events Lodge 29, Taylor hosted the State Tarok Tournament on Saturday, February 5. There were 41 players for the event. We want to thank everyone who took the time to travel and visit our lodge.

There were several members of Lodge 29 who contributed to the breakfast and making lunch for the tournament players. They were Frankie and Mary Jane Pustejovsky,

Frances Tallas, Edmond and Loretta Tate, Bobby and Laverne Eulenfeld, John and Lillie Valis, Mark Basile, Lorraine Karkoska, Alice Schwenke, Dorothy Markert, Jesse and Linda Pospisil, and Tommie Schiller.

Thanks to all of you for making the tournament a success.

On Sunday, February 6, Lodge 29 held our annual Super Bowl Party.

Several televisions were set up around the hall for viewing the game.

A stew supper was served along with many other delicious food items.

Door prizes were given and the winners of our prize drawing were announced. We look forward to seeing everyone at next year’s Super Bowl Party!

Members stood for a moment of silent prayer for deceased members Robert Cummins and William Filer.

District Three officers were introduced. District Three Director Johnnie Krizan presented a plaque to the Gladys Yates family in tribute and honor to her life. The plaque honored the date that the Gladys Yates Scholarship was endowed. The family present were Gladys’ husband, James Yates; sons, Larry and Jamie Yates; mother Bonnie Pruitt; sisters Sue Pauling, Annie Sanders, and Christine Wigley; brothers Joe Pruitt, Robert Pruitt, Jim Pruitt, Richard Pruitt, and Jerry Pruitt; and some of their families. It was so good to see the Yates and Pruitt families once again.

Sister Dana read correspondence from Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek about the SPJST Awards Banquet. Current names of the lodge officers are needed. members. For the February 20 meeting, the committee will furnish lasagna, salad, garlic bread and desserts. Members do not have to bring any food.

FAC Mary Alice Langlotz thanked members for turning in the fraternal reports to her for last year. She thanked the youth for all the good work they do and the Sunshine committee for sending out cards for the ill and deceased. She reminded everyone about the upcoming tournaments—State Taroky Tournament is March 5 at Lodge 47, Seaton; State 42 Tournament is April 2 at Lodge 6, Cottonwood; the State Horseshoe Tournament is May 14 at Lodge 66, Waco in Elm Mott; and State Golf Tournament is August 13 at Mill Creek Golf Course. Sister Mary Alice will make a new lodge committee list and present it at the February 20 meeting.

Dorothy Veselka gave the Cheer and Condolence report. Get well cards were sent to Lena Kuehn who had eye surgery; to Fred Veselka who had hernia surgery; to Irene Mueller who has been ill and is awaiting knee surgery; to Debbie Galler; and Johnnie Gaidusek, Sr. We hope all are feeling better by now. Sympathy cards were sent to Irene Mueller on the death of her brother-in-law, Raymond Weinberger; to Otis and Emma Ceska on the death of his sister-in-law, Frances Ceska; to Grace Cummins on the death of her husband, Robert Cummins; to the Bill Nors family on the death of his brother, Henry Nors, and to the William Filer family.

There was no youth club report due to Youth Leader Debbie Galler and her group attending another function.

The Auditing Committee, LaNell Brem, Janie Dujka and Irene Mueller reported that all books were in excellent order.

Bookkeeper Diana Engelke gave the bookkeeping report.

Sister Darlene Engelke read names of candidates for membership. Jerry Kucera wrote up Richard Allen Chrisner, and Larry Matula wrote up Sara B. Flanagan. Both were accepted into Lodge 66.

Sister Darlene Engelke read resolutions of sympathy on William Filer and Robert Cummins. May they rest in peace.

Sue Pauling, sister of Gladys Yates, on behalf of the Yates and Pruitt families, thanked the Home Office representatives and Supreme Lodge members for the kind words for Gladys and all that the lodge has done.

There were no January birthday members present. Congratulations to Eugene and Dorothy Gerlich on their 52nd wedding anniversary.

The 50-50 winner was our guest Mary Karlik from Lodge 6. The adult door prize winner was Milan Dujka, III. Next Meeting—February 6 The next meeting will be held on February 20 for the Board of Directors and Entertainment Committee at 1:30 p.m., and the regular lodge meeting is at 2:30 p.m.

Lodge 89, Rosebud welcomes its newest member, Mason Baker, who was born November 23, 2004, to Danny and Monica Baker of Cameron. Grandparents include Joe and Patsy Baker of Burlington. Grandma Patsy is the Secretary/Treasurer/Youth Leader at Lodge 89. Mason was signed up for SPJST membership by his aunt and SPJST Sales Representative Tammy Martinez.

President Lonnie Lostak called the February meeting of Lodge 139, Danbury to order at 6 p.m. on February 2, 2005. The meeting was held at Fillips Cafe. Fourteen members were present.

A silent prayer was held in memory of Ora Faye Wilson. She will be greatly missed by all. Our condolence to the family.

The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved. The treasurer’s report was given and approved.

Correspondence was read and discussed.

Jalene Baldwin is now a new sales representative for writing insurance.

Fraternally Rita J. Vanek, FAC Lodge 177, Academy presented the Crawford High School Band with —SPJST— a $500 contribution for the band’s Presidential Inauguration trip to Washington, D.C. The lodge received a letter from the Crawford High School Band thanking them for the donation. In the letter, Drum Major Aleyna Blackketter states, “This will be a great educational experience for all of us. In addition to participating in the inauguration, a number of educational activities and experiences have been planned for us. The lodge voted to hold the meetings at 1:30 p.m., except for the meal/meetings in March, June, September, and December which will be at 1 p.m.

Youth Leader Brenda Gonzales announced the youth club has adopted a soldier serving in Iraq. Youth club members presented handmade valentines and boxes of candy to the adult members in appreciation for their continued support.

FAC Mary Ann Barta asked those bringing hats for the Easter Hat contest to bring them in a box or bag.

There will be adult and youth categories.

Mary Ann Barta, Domingo Gonzales, Jr., and Regina House were appointed to a scholarship committee to pursue guidelines for the possible issuance of lodge scholarships.

Celebrating a birthday is Sandy Vasquez. Belenda and Jeff Barta are celebrating their 21st anniversary.

In Memoriam Expression of Sympathy We, the members of the Resolution Committee of Lodge Hvezda Texasu, No. 47, Seaton, Texas, on behalf of our membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed lodge brother, DON BODENHEIMER. Services for Don Bodenheimer, 83, of Temple, were held on Friday, January 28, 2005, at 3 p.m., at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home in Temple with Reverend Roy Parker officiating. Burial was in Bellwood Memorial Park in Temple with military honors. Visitation was from 6 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, January 27, at the funeral home.

He died Tuesday, January 25 at his home.

Mr. Bodenheimer was born in Kernersville, North Carolina, to Franklin Lewis and Lula Mae Craven Bodenheimer. He was a barber for more than 50 years and owned Don’s of Temple.

He served in the U.S. Army in World War II. He married Lucy Helen Robbins on April 7, 1945, at the Seventh Street Methodist Church in Temple.

He was a member of Memorial Baptist Church, Duck’s Unlimited, and the Bass Club.

Survivors are his wife of Temple; son, Frank Bodenheimer of San Antonio; daughters, Judy Beller of Dallas and Linda Morgan of Temple; brothers, Verlin Bodenheimer, Jack Bodenheimer, and Wayne Bodenheimer, all of High Point, North Carolina, and Roger Bodenheimer of Tucker, Arkansas; sisters, Geraldine Lamb, Doris Loggins, and Faye Elfred, all of High Point, and Ruth Tesh of Charlotte, North Carolina; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

In Memory of Loraine Richter Loraine Elizabeth Richter, age 88, of Cyclone, died Saturday, January 29, 2005, in a Temple nursing center. Services were held at 10 a.m., on Monday, January 31 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Cyclone. Reverend Walter Matus officiated. Burial followed in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Cyclone.

Rosary was recited at 6 p.m. on Sunday, January 30 at CookGerngross-Green-Patterson Funeral Home in Rosebud.

Mrs. Richter was born on February 23, 1916, in Cyclone to Fritz and Emma Schneider. She married Wayman L. Richter on June 25, 1936. She was a homemaker and assisted her husband in farming. In later years, she worked at Al’s Bar-BQ in Temple and the Rosebud Hospital. She was a lifelong member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, St. Joseph’s Altar Society, SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone, the Seaton Seniors Citizen Group, and the Westphalia Seniors Citizens Group.

She was preceded in death by her husband; brothers, Leo Schneider and Edwin Schneider; and her parents.

Survivors include son, Wayman H. Richter of Temple; sister, Viola Doskocil of Cyclone; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to St.

She was born in Edge in Brazos County to Frank and Julie Sodek Matejka. She married Otis Edward Kovar in 1945. He preceded her in death on May 14, 1979.

She was a member of Ocker Brethren Church, Christian Sisters, the choir, SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton.

She also had been a member of Leedale Home Demonstration Club, Rogers PTA, 4-H leader, a Sunday School teacher. She worked for Temple Welding Supply, Neman Real Estate, and Temple Iron and metal.

Survivors are twin daughters, Annette West of McKinney and Jeanette Swahn of Mansfield; sister, Bernice Woodbury of Pasco, Washington; and three grandchildren.

Lodge 47, Seaton youth Crystal Morris soaring to new heights Dear SPJST Members, Congratulations to Lodge 47, Seaton member Crystal Morris. She was nominated to Who’s Who A m o n g American High S c h o o l Students.

Crystal has achieved a lot this year. She is active as a freshman at Academy High School and in the SPJST where her hard work and diligence is beginning to show. She now carries a grade average of 90 percent or better in all of her subjects. She also is active in sports, including volleyball, basketball, softball, and track, and plays trumpet in the AHS Band.

Crystal was a queen contestant at the District Two royalty competition.

She currently holds the office of treasurer in the Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Club.

Her claim to fame is that she is the granddaughter of the late Nick A.

and Dorothy Morris. Brother Nick was past Vestnik Editor and past Supreme Lodge President. She is also the granddaughter of Frank W. and the late Letha Faye Marek.

Her parents are Joe and Pam Morris. Joe was a past assistant youth leader, and Pam is currently assistant youth leader at Lodge 47 Seaton.

Her brother is Josef Morris, a sixth grader at Academy Middle School and a drummer in the band—just like his dad and his uncle, Michael Morris.

We are very proud of Crystal’s achievements as she is continuing to soar to new heights.

Madeline turned 6 on November 18, 2004 and is very excited about finally being able to participate as an active member in the youth club. Madeline is in kindergarten at Pullen Elementary in Rockwall, Texas and she enjoys soccer, gymnastics and dance.

Her parents are Steve and Marlene Clark; grandparents are Johnnie and Margaret Krajca of Ennis; and great-grandmother is Annie Martinek, all of Ennis.

Lodge 202 Jourdanton Youth Club honors adults Hello, SPJST members!

Lodge 202, Jourdanton held its meeting on February 6, 2005. The youth club members held an Appreciation Day. Every adult was given a homemade Valentine’s Day card and a box of chocolate. The youth club held this Appreciation Day to say thank you for all the support we have been given.

Youth club members voted on having a coin drive at our March meal meeting to raise money for the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive and to adopt a troop and two servicemen in Iraq. We will be writing letters and sending care items.

Lodge 79, Corpus Christi Youth Club recently met to plan upcoming activities.

Design a Kroj Vest Traditional folk costumes add a splash of color to cultural celebrations the world over. The Germans have their lederhosen. The Spanish have their charro suits and china poblana. And the Czechs have their kroj! This year’s SPJST district spring meeting art contests give our young members the opportunity to design their very own kroj vest!

Every village had its own kroj.

And, in case you’re wondering, that’s pronounced “kroy.” Not only did the kroj show what village you were from, it also showed if you were single or married. In general, if a woman was wearing some sort of headpiece (cap or scarf), she most likely was married; unmarried girls wore nothing or flowers in their hair.

Men also had several symbols for married status. The most notable was that of the long feathers bachelors wore in their hats.

They were clipped short when they were married. In other cases, the feathers represented their position or status in the village—or even the number of girlfriends they had! And, most certainly, the kroj also showed off the talents of whoever made the outfit.

Each varied in fabric, color, design, and overall form.

Both men’s and women’s kroj typically included a vest. The vests are often embellished with embroidery, beadwork, sequins, and/or lace. Your project will be to design a kroj vest. You may submit your design on the official entry form which will be available from lodge youth leaders, the Home Office, or at your spring district meeting. Vest designs will be judged at the spring district meeting. Age divisions will be as follows: Ages 6 to 8 Ages 9 to 11 Ages 12 to 14 Ages 15 to High School Senior

Awards First place winners in each age division at the district level will receive watercolor pencil sets.

First place winners at the state level will each receive their very own festive kroj vest created especially for the SPJST by Maggie Grmela of Maggie’s Fabric Patch in West, Texas.

Judging Designs will be judged on the design’s overall appearance, creativity, ability to be reproduced and historical accuracy.

One design in each age category will be selected at each district’s spring meeting and sent to the SPJST Home Office. A total of four designs—one in each age category— will come from each district.

Rules • Submit entry on an official entry form (available from SPJST youth leaders or the State Youth Director) or draw your vest on a sheet of 8 1/2-inch by 11-inch white paper.

• Use ink, magic markers, crayons, paints, pencils, and any other art supplies necessary to design your vest.

• The SPJST logo may be used in your design.

• All artwork and/or design must be the original work of the entrant.

How to Enter Contests will be held at each district’s spring meeting. Please check the Vestnik for your district’s meeting date, location, and contest registration time.

Výroční schůze České vzdělávací nadace státu Texasu se konala dne 22. ledna 2005 v Hlavní úřadovně Slovanské podporující jednoty státu Texasu po desáté hodině dopoledne za poměrně hojné účasti členstva naší nadace.

President Marvin Marek přivítal přítomné, poděkoval za pohostinství SPJST. President SPJST Brian Vaníček přivítal jménem jednoty členstvo a upozornil, že mnozí členové jednoty pracují i pro naši nadaci.

Složili jsme přísahu americké vlajce a byli jsme potěšeni zprávou, že jsme v posledním čtvrtletí neztratili ani jednoho člena.

Jedním z hostů byl Dr. James Scott a Elida Gomezová z Severotexaské university. Vzpomněl, že ještě před nedávnem nevěřil v rychlé ustanovení katedry české hudby a kultury a nyní již je polovina částky vyplacena a mohou začít s využitím poloviny stipendia. Upozornil, že Janáčkova opera Jenůfa byla největším úspěchem opery v Dallasu, Tx. Následující úředníci podali jednotlivé zprávy: tajemník Paul Hlavinka přečetl zápis a byl schválen s několika opravami. Pokladník nadace Anton Pustějovský podal zprávu o financích a byla přijata s uspokojením. Vděčny pokladník přijme jakoukoliv částku, vyplňte šeky a pošlete je na adresu: Anton Pustějovský, P. O. Box 744313, Dallas, Tx. 75374-4313. Nadace potřebuje několik desítek tisíc dolarů, aby ukončila sbírku na katedru české hudby a kultury. Ředitelka Diane Wilsonová podala zprávu volebního výboru. Vice president nadace Al Kercho poděkoval za spolupráci ředitelů a místopředseda Sboru ředitelů Woody Smith poděkoval za práci celého výboru a ostatních ředitelů při uspořádání oslavy 50. výročí založení nasí nadace.

Česky píšící dopisovatel Jan Vaculík doporučil získávání nových adres pro míst ní noviny. Je nutno požádat o email adresu novin a poslat ji našemu anglicky píšícímu dopisovateli Brianu Vaníčkovi a ten začne posílat pravidelně zprávy o naší práci. Naše nadace nemusí být nejlépe ukrytým tajemstvím v Texasu a v Americe.

Anglicky píšící dopisovatel Brian Vaníček poznamenal, že se snaží rozšířit počet adres novin i jedno tlivců. Doporučil mlavit osobně s lidmi, kteří se zajímají o naši činnost a jsou ochotni přispet financemi, prací či jinak.

Náš zástupce při Texaské universitě Roger Kolář podal zprávu o stavu katedry českého jazyka a kultury. Oznámil radostnou zprávu, že asi 220 studentů studuje různé předměty na katedře. Katedra byla přeorganisována a jmenuje se katedra slovanských a euroasijských studií a zahrnuje bývalé komunistické země v Evropě a Asii. Vedoucí katedry ustanovili nové středisko spolupráce v Praze pro celou Střední Evropu.

Důležitá byla zpráva Clintona Machanně, předsedy Sboru ředitelu.

Podal přehled práce nadace za rok 2004, který byl skutečně vyjímečný, protoze jsme oslavili 50. výročí zalození nadace.

Připomnel ustanovení institucí na Texaské universitě v Austinu, Tx. a stipendium na ang listice na Texaské A and M universite v College Station, Tx. Obě instituce poskytují výborné možnosti studia. Naše knihona se také díky práci ředitele Davida Chrousta zvětšuje a zlepšuje. Kosmas, akademický žurnál pro česko-slovenskou problematiku je vydáván na universitě.

Nyní připravujeme ustanovení katedry české hudby a kultury na Severotexaské universitě v Dentonu, Tx. Dobrosrdečný dárce se našel a pomohl nadaci podstatnou částkou a již v tomto roce se mohou využít úroky. Založili jsme nyní tři instituce, které potřebují naši pomoc, podporu a dohled, aby byly

16.unor 2005 využívány ku prospěchu našich krajanů ne jen v Texasu, ale po celé Americe a po celém světě.

President nadace Marvin Marek promluvil o událostech v minulém roce. Připomenul návštěvu taneční skupiny z Moravy, oslavu 50. výročí založení nadace, zvláště poděkoval Rayovi Snokhousovi za pomoc při vyjednávání se státními a diplomatickými službami. Zhodnotil činnost dosavadních institucí a vyslovil naději, že katedra české hudby a kultury bude ustanovena v tomto roce a studenti a další generace po nás mají možnost studovat češtinu, literaturu a kulturu, angličtinu a nylní i naši hudbu dlouho po našem odchodu na věčnost.

Pak následovaly příspěvky našich hostů. Lou Zaeski zdůraznil, že každá hudba je důležitá, včetně polky a valčíku, a v minulém roce zpívali poslancům a podarovali je koláčky.

Richard Pavlásek poděkoval Clintonovi Machannovi za knihu "Nebezpečné cesty". Dana Merklo vá oznámila, že má instruktážní film o chodských dudácích. Do Texasu má přijet komorní orchestr z Břeclavi na několik dnů. Slovanská jednota bude mít velkou oslavu v San Antoniu, Tx., naše krajanská veřej nost je pozvána.

Jindřiška Červenková předala nadaci tisíc dolarů na katedru české hudby a kultury. Vyslechli jsme přednášku a dechové sexteto za hrálo velmi zkušeně a melodicky několik známych skladeb. President nadace Marvin Marek jim poděkoval za pěknou hru a tím byla členská schůze nadace ukončena.

Schůze ředitelů měla jen hlavní body, protože úředníci přednesli zprávy na členské schůzi. Naše práce závisí na dobré vůli naší krajanské veřejnosti a jsme vděčni za pomoc při ustanovení katedry hudby a kultury, která bude ke propěchu nejenom krajanů v Texasu a Americe, ale i stipendistů z Moravy a k prohloubení hudebních znalostí po celém světě.

Oceníme každou podporu naší snahy a posílejte šeky navýše uvedenou adresu pokladníka.
