Before 1918, the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month held no historical significance. But since that year, November 11 has marked the anniversary of the armistice signing that ended World War I. The day originally was called Armistice Day and made a legal American holiday in 1938, honoring veterans of World War I. But, after World War II, there was a new crop of war veterans with little or no association to World War I. And since armistice means "truce," the significance of the name changed. Starting in 1954, November 11 became a day honoring veterans of all wars, known as Veterans Day in the US, and as

Remembrance Day in Canada. Many wonder why Veterans Day occurs on its actual day, while American holidays like Memorial Day, Columbus Day and Washington's Birthday are observed on Mondays. Those holidays occur on Mondays for people to enjoy community activities and promote travel. For a short time, some states did celebrate Veterans Day on a Monday near the 11th. District Four State Field Representative and Lodge 49, Rowena member William J. (Billy) Rollwitz enlisted in the U.S. Army on December 1, 1958. He took his basic training at Fort Carson, Colorado. He was then sent to Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland. From there, he went to Oklahoma and was stationed at Fort Sill. He served in the reserves with the 980th Engineering Battalion in San Angelo. In 1961, he was recalled into active duty and served at Gray Air Force at Killeen, Texas, and Fort Carson, Colorado, and was discharged at Fort Hood, Texas, in 1962 with the rank of Sergeant E-5. He is now an active member of Pat William Post 8 American Legion in Ballinger and has served as Post Commander for eight years, NW Zone Commander in the 21st District for four years, and served two years as Finance Officer for the 21st District of the American Legion.
