Golf Success I attended the Third Annual SPJST State Golf Tournament on Saturday, October 9 at Salmon's Park Golf Course in Temple. It was probably one of the most perfect fall golfing daysexcept for the wind! The sun was shining, and the leaves were falling. The only thing that I can think of missing at the golf tournament was Gladys.

Gladys Yates, our late State Fraternal Activities Coordinator, started the SPJST State Golf Tournament in 2002.

She was always so excited about the golf tournament and she saw such great possibilities with it. I truly miss Gladys. She was-and will always be-an inspiration to me.

Simply Classic!

David and I totally enjoyed attending the car show at the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 1 in Taylor on October 10.

Activities Director Ima Jean Weise and her assistant, Brittany Dornhoefer, coordinated the show for the residents. The Austin Area Car Club brought 14 classic cars to the rest home for residents to admire and even ride in.

China Painting-Great Therapy On October 5, I attended the specialcalled meeting for Lodge 157, Lubbock and Lodge 233, Lubbock. It was a very good meeting with a lot of ideas exchanged. The next meeting is tentatively set for Tuesday, November 16 in Lubbock. There is the possibility of merging the two lodges which will be discussed in more detail at the next meeting.

One of the original charter members of Lodge 157, Lubbock attended the meeting, and I had the opportunity to visit with her. Angeline Cuba Shockley says she has been an SPJST member since about 1936 or 1937, and she said that it's been about 30 years since she attended an SPJST meeting. I was so glad to meet her. Ms. Shockley has been teaching china painting for 30 years. I did not know much about china painting until that Lubbock meeting. It's a very detailed type of painting on vases, mugs, trays, bowls, etc. And, you can't just use any type of paint. It takes a very special paint that you apply very lightly. "A little paint goes a long way," Ms. Shockley said. "One vile may last three to five years." I learned from her that you use mineral oil to wet your brush instead of water when painting.

I very much enjoyed my visit with all of the people at the Lubbock meeting, and I especially learned a lot from Ms. Shockley. Her spirit is amazing. She

now entitled to all SPJST member benefits with no further dues or assessments required.

Leona was born on October 11, 1908, in Houston, Texas to Leonard Schmand of Persia and Sophie Heid Schmand of Germany.

On April 8, 1929, she married George Chromcak in Weimar.

The couple has a daughter and son inlaw, Doylene Drozd and husband, Harvey; grandsons and their wives, Calvin and Sheila I' !-L14 Drozd, and Dwayne and Marilyn Drozd; and great-grandchildren, Brittany, Braden, Shannon, and Shane Drozd. Deceased are great-grandsons Ryan Drozd on November 25, 2001, and Shawn on March 5, 2002.

Leona's husband, Leonard, passed away on September 14, 1955. Her half-sister, Norma, died in 1960.

Leona and Leonard were farmers.

After Leonard's death, Leona worked at Gindler's Department Store in Hallettsville.

Leona enjoyed cooking, dancing, going to the coast, visiting with family and friends, and volunteering. She also traveled to Oakland, California to visit her mother.

Because of her passion for baseball,

and for hitting the ball, kids called Leona, Babe Ruth.

In the old days, Leona enjoyed playing the organ at house dances, riding the train, getting an ice cream for a nickle, playing with her doll furniture her father made for her and walking to school with her best friend. In the past, Leona always had a big garden and raised chickens and turkeys. During her school years, Leona was very active in baseball and playing the piano and organ.

Leona's special accomplishments include receiving a plaque for 25 years of service at Gindler's Department Store, working as a volunteer at L.A.M.B. in Hallettsville, babysitting for teachers' children in Moravia; graduating from Schulenburg school with an excellence award for penmanship; and being well-known for her delicious cakes.

Leona enjoys reading and completing puzzle books. She is a member of the Moravia Home Extension Club and the Moravia Farm Bureau. Leona still cooks dinner every Sunday for her family. She loves to go—just ask her and she's gone. And she loves a good joke.

Leona has lived a pretty healthy life.

She has been in the hospital only four times in her life. Leona had a slight heart attack in November 2002 and cracked a bone in her knee in August 2003. She now walks with a cane.

SPJST records 3,224 applications written through September in Join Hands 2004 program Through the end of September, the SPJST received 3,224 applications for insurance and annuity certificates. The membership application goal of 2,345 in the Join Hands 2004 membership drive was reached in July. However, the membership campaign continues through the end of the year.

In conjunction with SPJST's Join Hands 2004 program, local lodges have been assigned application quotas for the year. The lodge quota has been based

largely on past performance and perceived potential.

The fourth column, "Youth Club Quota," applies to those lodges with youth clubs and reflects applications written for members between the ages of 0 and 17.

"Youth Club" totals are applied toward the lodge's total quota. The sixth column, "Lodge Incentive Count," reflects the number of new certificates issued for the Lodge Recognition and Incentive Program.

SPJST thanks State Golf Tournament sponsors, participants Dear Members, The Third Annual SPJST State Golf Tournament was held Saturday, October 9 at Sammon's Park Golf Course in Temple.

Twenty-one golfers participated in the tournament, and 17 youth entered the youth golf contests.

The weather was beautiful for the day's events. Overall, the tournament was a success.

Three Fall Meeting Membership Drive, and Fun Day District

Around the St . to District Three Fall Meeting, membership drive, fun day at Lodge 92 Fort Worth October 24 As District Three President, I want to invite all members to the District Three Fall Meeting. Lodge 92 in Fort Worth has been busy planning this day.

Included in this meeting and Fun Day, we will have our second membership drive for 2004. Please bring as many friends, family members, neighbors or anyone else that you may think to become a SPJST member.

Lodge 92 has informed the district officers that the profits from this year's fun day will be donated to the Gladys Yates Scholarship Fund. So please plan to stay and join in the fun. Lodge 92 would appreciate any cakes that you might be able to donate to be used for the cake walk.

Six Fall Meeting October 24 at Hungerford Hall District

Dear Readers, This is just a reminder of our District Six Fall Meeting which will be

held at Hungerford Hall on October 24, 2004 hosted by Lodge 28, East Bernard and Lodge 151, Wharton.

A delicious noon meal is planned and each lodge is asked to send 10 cents a member to our district treasurer Tony Kelner at 911 Ave. K, Rosenberg, Texas 77471. You are asked to bring a door prize and two desserts. We will again have a wheel of fortune, and each member is asked to bring two useable items.

Once again, we will have contests for our adults—men included. There will be the following contests— Christmas ornament, needlework, candy, and weather permitting, horseshoes. Needlework: the item must be made by hand; can be embroidered, crocheted, knitted, needlepoint, and latch hook; stitches must be visible on both sides; no kits. Ornaments: must be your own homemade creation; overall size is six inches excluding the hanger; no kits; no food can be used.

Candy: 12 pieces must be displayed on a white styrofoam plate in a Ziploctype bag; no mixes or kits; must be made from scratch with the recipe included; no refrigerated items; candy cannot include flour; dipped fruit, pretzels and such are not considered candy; candy may be auctioned following judging. Contest registration begins at 10 a.m. with judging at 11 a.m.

Saturday, September 25, 2004 • Abilene, Texas More than 30 people participated in the District Four Fun Day. Everyone enjoyed fine food and games.

The youth entered in the Christmas Ornament Contest, played water balloon toss, and enjoyed an over-sized air

castle. Lodge 229, Abilene hosted the successful event. This was thefirst time for Abilene to host the districtwide meeting. Adults enjoyed bingo as well as the baking contest.

Lodge 4 Hallettsville reports on Family Day

A Christmas Ornament Contest was held for the youth club members attending the meeting. Participants are pictured at left.

Lodge 4, Hallettsville held its annual Family Day on Sunday, August 29, 2004, at the Legion Hall beginning with a social hour at 11 a.m. Greeters were Margaret and Albert Smotek.

A delicious catered noon meal of barbecue pork, sausage, with the trimmings was served along with a variety of desserts brought by the members.

A short meeting followed with President Joe Siptak presiding.

Special guests recognized were Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek, his wife, Joan, and their children, Stephanie and Sam; Supreme Lodge Secretary-Treasurer Lanita Anglin and husband, Charles; District Six Director Mike Ahlstrom and wife, Kathy; District Six State Field Representative Karen Kaspar; and 2004 State King Joshua Siptak and State Duke Mark Siptak.

Fifty-year membership pins were presented to Alvin Linhart, Matilda Linhart, Alton Michalcik, Erwin

Michalcik, Alton J. Sevcik, and Anita Hagens for her deceased husband, Wilbur Hagens. Each also received a corsage or boutonniere. Unable to attend were Patric C. Deatherage, Anton A. Janak, Shirley L. Kauffmann, Charlene Leopold, Joe R. Quitta, Victor C. Vasek, Daniel W. Vornsand, and Ivey M. Woytek.

Youth club member Holly Scott was recognized for having her Christmas card design chosen as one of the 2004 SPJST Christmas Cards.

State YAD winners in craft and talent were Sarah Siptak — first in Talent and third in Constructed Items; Jonathan Vahalik — first in Pictorial Arts and second in Foods; Ronald Sustaita — first in Constructed Items; Elizabeth Vahalik — third in Sewing; and Joshua Siptak -- first in Handicraft and second in Constructed Items. State King Joshua Siptak gave his speech, and Sarah Siptak performed her first place talent dance.

Youth club prize drawing winners were Margie Gallia, Stephanie Vanicek, Karen Kaspar, Charles Anglin, Mike Ahlstrom, Ida Neubauer, Viola Holly, Marilyn Sevcik, Gaye Ann Galetka, Laurie Leer, and Alene Steffek.

Vice President/FAC Annie Vahalik announced the door prize winners— Elizabeth Vahalik, Lanita Anglin, Estelle Barta, Kelsey Leer, Jonathan Vahalik, Marissa Sustaita, Hilmer Galetka, Wanda Orsak, Vivian Chudej, Margaret Smotek, Nolan Orsak, Wylie Jansky, Lillie Balusek, Agnes Warncke, Wilma Wagner, Marvin Fojt, Evelyn Sklar, Mark Siptak, Tony Matula, Ashton Martignoni, Johnnie Zak, Evelyn Holy, and Emma Jansky.

Lodge 6 Cottonwood reports on recent activities Hi! Brother Johnnie Krizan, President, called our meeting to order on Sunday, October 3, at 4:30 p.m. We all said the Pledge of Allegiance with Brother Johnnie reciting the SPJST Motto. We had a moment of silence for our departed member, Brother Steve Neckar.

Wednesday, October 20, 2004— TNIK/11 Georgie Soukup, gave a report of 19 members present at our meeting. All officers were present with the exception of Sister Peggy Dobecka, Treasurer and Youth Leader.

Brother Johnnie called upon Sister Barbara Jean Hykel, Secretary, for the reading of the minutes from our last meeting, which were approved as read.

There was correspondence of thank you notes from Herbert and Edith Brem family and the family of Felix Mynar.

There was also correspondence regarding an invitation from the Czech Foundation of Texas in Austin.

Sister Lydia Dobecka gave the treasurer's report, and it was approved as read. She went on to also give the youth report. She is assistant youth leader. Cakes will be taken to the rest home on Wednesday, October 6. Sister Lydia also reported that the youth would have a Halloween party on Friday, October 15. The youth will furnish the food and invited the adults to join in their party. She also mentioned that the District Three Fall Meeting would be at Lodge 92, Fort Worth, on October 24, at which time Christmas ornaments would be judged. It was reported that their next meeting would be on November 7.

Brother George Straten, Financial Secretary and Hall Manager, gave his report of socials on November 5 and 19, with our meeting to be held on November 7, at 2 p.m. Brother George reported no correspondence received from the SPJST Home Office, so he had no report on new members.

Brother Johnnie called upon Sister Barbara Jean Hykel, Fraternal Activities Coordinator, for her report.

She reported that October was Czech Heritage Month. She also mentioned that scholarship applications need to be completed as soon as possible. They have to be in the SPJST Home Office

by February 1.

Having had eye surgery on just one eye at this time, it is hard to read and write, so hopefully, I am doing okay with this report. I may have missed some items, because I could not read my own writing after jotting them down. Surgery on my other eye will be Wednesday, October 13. Hopefully, I will be able to "see straight" again.

Sister Jerelene Lenart, Sunshine Committee, was called upon for her report. She reported sending get well cards to Brothers Jerry Kucera and John Muehlstein. We wish you both a speedy recovery. She also reported sending a sympathy card to Mary Neckar, upon the death of her husband, Steve. Our condolences to Mary Neckar and all of her family.

Brother Johnnie called upon Brother Milton Peterson, Board of Trustee's Chairman, for a report. Brother Milton reported nothing new to report. He called a meeting for Friday, October 15, at 7:30 p.m. He mentioned that the appreciation party plans would be finalized that evening on whether to have a catered meal at the hall with afternoon fun and games and snacks, or go out to a restaurant for a meal only.

Brother Johnnie Krizan mentioned that our fellow lodge in Elk was having a meal on October 17, for those who may want to join them. He also mentioned the District Three Fall Meeting at Lodge 92, Fort Worth and encouraged everyone to attend.

birthday were Brother Donald Cernosek and Sister Mary Pavlas. A happy birthday to you two and to all with a birthday this month.

Congratulations to Brother Ernest and Sister Evelyn Bezdek on their 55th wedding anniversary on October 18.

May they both enjoy many more years together.

The $5 door prize was won by Sister Mary Pavlas. Progressive door prizes were drawn—Ben Mynar of Abbott and Brook Craig, both not present at this meeting.

Next Meeting—November 7 With no further business to discuss, Brother Ray Perez, First Vice President, adjourned our meeting until Sunday, November 7, at 2 p.m. The meal will be another potluck meal and will also be a "noon meal", so each member is asked to bring a covered dish and come to eat at lunch time before our meeting. This meeting will also be our annual meeting to elect lodge officers for the coming year-2005. See you there!

24, Cyclone presents Columbus Day meeting report Lodge

Lodge 24, Cyclone met on Columbus Day at the lodge home, Flag Hall.

President Daniel Wilde called the meeting to order at 7:15 p.m. We recited the Pledge of Allegiance and held a silent prayer for the sick and deceased.

Margaret Mikeska read the minutes from the last meeting. Barbara Macek gave the finance report. Vice President/FAC Keith Andel reminded us that October was the start of the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive. Also, Christmas cards can be ordered until October 11, the day of our meeting. A Progressive 42 party will be in Beyersville on October 16. October 23 is Make a Difference Day. Wilbert Mikeska gave the bar report.

Youth Leader Joan Vanicek had the last youth club meeting in the hall in conjunction with our Czech Heritage Day. They also sold kolaches and cookbooks. They did well. Some of the youth won trophies at the state golf tournament. The Six Flags trip is on October 16. The next youth meeting will be on November 6 at the lock-in at Seaton Star Hall.

The lodge voted to send our annual donation to the scholarship fund in memory of our deceased members from the past 12 months.

Also, the use of the pits is to be donated to the Rogers Fire Department for its fund raiser. Repairs to the front flower bed have been made by Daniel Wilde, Robert Macek, and Wilbert Mikeska. The little bridge in front of the entrance is coming soon.

We voted to have the Czech Heritage Day on the first weekend of October, 2005, and will try to have a polka mass along with a silent auction.

Also, we want to ask the Fourth Degree of the Knights of Columbus to be there.

12/VESTNIK—Wednesday, October 20, 2004 The election of officers will be next month. By-law committee members appointed by the president are Bobby Hoelscher and Joan Vanicek; and appointed by the vice president is Theresa Andel.

Theresa made the most delicious chicken salad sandwiches for our meal before the meeting. She also made some tuna salad and other dishes. We are indebted to her for such good food and the time it took to make it.

The Halloween dance is October 30.

Doors open at 7 p.m. and the dance begins at 8:30 p.m. Cash prizes given (big).

Lodge 24, Cyclone celebrates Czech Heritage Friends and family gathered at Lodge 24, Cyclone on Saturday, October 2, 2004, to celebrate Czech Heritage Day. Doors opened at 5 p.m. with a delicious hamburger meal, cooked over live mesquite coals.

Guest appearance was by Miss Texas Jamie Story. Backed up by the Vrazels' Polka Band, Jamie performed a medley of Hank Williams' songs.

She also played a beautiful rendition of the "Beer Barrel Polka" as well as a classical piece.

In addition to being a wonderful pianist, Jamie was also an excellent dancer. She danced all night with gen-

tlemen of all ages—young and old— and even took the young children for a twirl around the floor a few times. She posed for many pictures and signed autographs for lodge members and guests. Best of all, she said she enjoyed the kolaches!

Evening dancing music was provided by the Vrazels' Polka Band. With encouraging applause from the audience, the band was persuaded to do some extra songs to end the evening with a lively sing-along.

Lodge Karel Jona§ No. 28, East Bernard meets this Sunday Dear Members, A reminder that the District Six Fall Meeting on the 24th of October will serve in lieu of Lodge Karel Jonas' regular monthly meeting which would have been held on the second Sunday of October.

The regular monthly meeting for November is scheduled for the second Sunday, the 14th. Election of officers for 2005 will be held. There will be more on the meeting later.

Ninth Annual Heritage Day at the State Fair of Texas Sunday, October 3, 2004 • Dallas, Texas Sunday, October 3, 2004, marked the occasion of the Ninth Annual Heritage Festival at the State Fair of Texas. The event, which was hosted

by Texas Cultural Partnership with the

assistance of the American Czech Culture Society, honors Texas' diverse ethnic and cultural traditions. Groups representing at least 10 nationalities performed at the daylong event.

Lodge 40 El Campo-Hillje October meeting minutes President Ardis Bacak called the meeting to order 2 p.m. with 35 members and one guest present. Nicole Laitkep led the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence for the deceased members and the sick in the community.

Roll call sited that all officers and trustees present.

Correspondence was then read.

Secretary Sheldon Holub read the minutes of the September 12, 2 meeting. A motion made by Tria Svatek to accept the minutes was seconded by J.C. Kocurek. Motion passed.

The treasurer's report was given by Lorraine Kana. The roof has been paid off.

FAC Dee Floyd thanked the kitchen workers.

The youth club leader's report was given by Jennifer Kunetka, and the bingo committee report was given by Sheldon Holub.

The snack bar report was given by Chairman Josephine Bacak and Hall Rental Chairmen Tria Svatek reports October rentals on the 16th and 30th.

Also rentals on November 6, December 4, and 11.

Mowing Committee report was given by J.C. Kocurek.

Resolution Committee report was given by Charlie Sanders. A death notice sent in for Christine Kulchak.

President Frank Pajestka, Jr. called to order the meeting of SPJST Lodge 80, Holland, at 4 p.m. on October 2, 2004. The membership stood for the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence for departed members. Vice President G.L. Brisbin and Youth Leader Gracie Schlickeisen were absent.

Secretary Linda Hill read the minutes from the September meeting.

They were approved as read.

Treasurer Glen Latham gave the financial report.

FAC Melissa Vrabe I reported Christmas cards could be ordered.

Engraved bricks were also available at $50 a brick. October is Czech Heritage Month. Also, the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive starts October 1.

Estelle Coker gave a brief report on the District Two Fall Meeting held in Elgin at Lodge 18 on September 19 and that she and her husband, J.D. "Pete" Coker, attended.

Frankie reported the ambulance fund benefit held September 26 was a success. A check was given to Fire Chief Coleman Benner in the amount of $5,500. In addition, SPJST Lodge 177, Academy gave $2,200.

Donations to the quilt drawing netted $409.

At the November 6 Super Bingo, the American Cancer Relay for Life team will have a bake sale. Any donation will be appreciated.

Good Deed by Lodge 73, Seymour

Lodge 73, Seymour recently purchased gravestones for two graves at the SPJST Cemetery in Seymour that did not have permanent markers. The graves mark the resting places of Joseph Brumek and Ludvig Kolacek.

Informing Visitors Members of Lodge 204, Stephenville sponsored a booth at the Cranfills Gap September Fest. They sold cookbooks, handed out pens, and promoted SPJST. Members are working to spread the SPJST word and searching for new members to grow the lodge. year. In a motion by Fred Busby and seconded by Coleman Benner, the membership agreed to let the Wolf family buy what is necessary to add to the current decorations.

The Holland Area Chamber of Commerce will meet Monday night, October 4, with Frank Pajestka, Jr. and Curtis Wolf to possibly plan for a Chamber banquet in February, 2005, catered and served by Lodge 80. This was approved by the membership in a motion by Curtis Wolf and seconded

by Coleman Benner.

A scholarship will be given in memory of Wayne Goodnight who passed away September 30.

Frankie noted that in the four years of the Holland Youth Boosters fund raiser that no one from Lodge 80 had ever won a prize. This year, a six-piece set of luggage was won by J.D. "Pete" and Estelle Coker.

The November meeting will be held at 3:30 p.m. and the board of directors at 3 p.m. in a motion by Ann Latham, seconded by Calvin Eckermann. This will allow extra time for election of officers.

Those having birthdays in October are Joe Sumbera, Coleman Benner, and Kenny Weir.

Door prizes were won by Calvin Eckermann, Frank Pajestka, Sr., Risa Pajestka, Ann Weir, and Curtis Wolf.

Ann Weir gave three Heart Walks tee-shirts. They were won by Glen Latham, John Jackson, and Estelle Coker.

Lodge 88, Houston to award scholarships Lodge 88, Houston will be awarding scholarships for the 2004 - 2005 school year. Application forms can be picked up at the lodge office at 1435 Beall Street in Houston, between the

hours of 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.

Applications must be postmarked by December 31, 2004. Applications postmarked after December 31, 2004 will not be considered.

To qualify, 1) students must be an active member of Lodge 88 for at least two years; 2) students must be paying local lodge dues; 3) applicants must be in their senior year in high school and have definite plans to enter college in the fall of 2005.

Lodge 139 Danbury holds successful membership dinner Lodge 139 of Danbury held its October meeting on Wednesday, October 6, 2004, at the home of Lorenda and David Baldwin.

The meeting was called to order by President Lonnie Lostak who also led the Pledge of Allegiance. There were 20 members present.

It was reported that 120 members and guests attended the picnic on Sunday October 3, 2004. The barbecue meal was catered by E.J.'s Restaurant.

Shirley Filipp has been on the sick list, and Ora Fay Wilson is still on the sick list.

Jerry Stefka who was on the sick list was back at the meeting. Let's keep our sick members and friends in our thoughts and prayers.

After the business meeting, everyone enjoyed dinner and visiting.

We would like to see more members at the November meeting.

The meeting was called to order at 2 p.m. President Robert Mayfield read the Pledge of Allegiance and had a moment of silence for deceased members. The meeting adjourned for lunch and reconvened at 2:40 p.m.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. Treasurer Tucker reported that August was a good month and reported for Entertainment Chair Mary Byers. All officers and trustees were present except Second Vice President Julius V. Zella and Entertainment Chair Mary Byers. For the executive board meeting, the second vice president was on a trip to New Jersey and Pennsylvania for the reunion of an old World War II outfit.

President Mayfield read letters from Pasadena Chamber of Commerce and Czech Education Foundation asking for participation. A letter was read also from Lynn Johnsen about District Five top producers from Lodge 172—Joe

Olivo, Lillia Mae Peter, and Vicki Dressler.

Lillia Mae gave a good report on District Five Fall Meeting at Lodge 196.

The next youth meeting will be October 16 at 11 a.m.

Vicki reported on get well cards sent to Henrietta Krenek, Rose Rogers, and Bill Denton. President Mayfield also reminded everyone about help will hall upkeep, cleaning, and maintenance.

Dorothy Adamek gave the sunshine report. Cards were sent to Jerry Kucera who had back surgery and to the Kenneth Stafford family who suffered the loss of a family member, Shelby Stafford.

Minutes were read by Secretary Daniel Roznovsky who along with his wife, Mary Ann, were back from vacation. Mary Ann must have seen "Elvis" on their trip through the rough roads in the mountains because she was "All Shook Up"!

All business reports were given by Johnny Adamek (Bar and Kitchen) and Robert Sill (Treasurer).

Angeline Stiborek reported no new members in September, and Ms. Milka Bralic gave the FAC report.

Donations Approved SPJST Lodge 183 voted and approved donations of $500 to Team Texas Express; $500 to the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange, and $100 to Arlington High School Girls Basketball for a half-page ad in their programs. SPJST also voted to donate matching funds up to $1,000 to Ms. Darlene Hollingsworth for the "Light the Night" walk for leukemia and blood cancer.

Ms. Kay Weeks gave the youth club report and said that the youth club will be having a lock-in at our lodge on November 6 if the lodge is available, and they will have 11 members do the Susan G. Komen Walk for breast cancer.

Family Night—October 29 October 29 will be our family night with Ms. Ella Mikeska bringing the chicken. Members are urged to attend and bring a covered dish.

We salute one of our members, Bryan Cepak, who recently made solo glider flights from Midlothian to New Braunfels and a triangular non-stop glider flight from Midlothian to Stephenville to Hubbard and back to Midlothian.

The Czechs of Texas Excerpted from the Texas Almanac 2000-2001

Reprinted with permission from www.angelfire.comitx5ftexasczech In December 1849, Reverend Josef Arnost Bergmann left his Czech homeland to minister to German Protestants in Texas. Pastor Bergmann and his family arrived in Galveston in 1850 and made their way to Cat Spring.

There in Austin County he led the Easter service for the congregation that hired him, and he soon wrote a letter praising Texas to the folks back at home.

That letter, published in the Morayske Noviny (The Moravian News), suggested opportunity to the families struggling on the overcrowded farmland of Central Europe. Also, it offered hope to merchants and craftsmen left frustrated after the failure of the 1848 social uprisings on the European continent. Among the reforms that had been sought in the Austrian Empire was more autonomy for ethnic groups such as the Czechs.

Bergmann's letter was the catalyst of opportunity that has earned him the designation of "father" of the Czech immigration to Texas.

In late August 1851, 16 families from northeastern Bohemia left Hamburg, Germany, to begin an arduous 17-week journey to the Texas Coast. Those first Czech immigrants arrived in early 1852 and were followed in 1853 and 1854 by other Czech families. The immigrants continued to make Cat Spring their dispersal point before moving out to New Ulm and Nelsonville in Austin County and neighboring Fayette County.

Although Protestants initiated the emigration to Texas, the majority of Czech immigrants—estimates range from 70 to 90 percent—were Catholic.

Many of these families settled around Fayetteville, often referred to as the "cradle of Czech immigration" in Texas.

The first Catholic Church to serve Czechs was built in 1855 just south of Fayetteville at Ross Prairie. The log chapel was replaced by a frame building in 1859, and in 1861 the church was moved closer to Ellinger (Live Oak Hill).

By 1856, there were Czechs in Dubina, Bluff (later renamed Hostyn), and Mulberry (now known as Praha, which is the Czech name for Prague).

Because Fayetteville, Cat Spring, and Ross Prairie had previously existed as German centers, various sources refer to Dubina or Hostyn as the first Czech settlement in Texas. The settlers in both places came over on the same ship. Catholic Czech Texans today honor St. Mary's Church of the Assumption (1865) in Praha as their "mother parish."

The first Czech Protestant service was held in 1855 near the present location of the Fayetteville Brethren Church. The Protestants were followers of a 15th-century reformist Bohemian priest, Jan Hus, and were known as Hussites in Europe, or the Brethren, as they called themselves.

These Czech Protestants eventually

established in Texas a denomination called the Unity of the Brethren. The first Brethren congregation was formed in 1864 in Vesely. The town, on the Austin and Washington county line, is known today as Wesley, and has an 1866 church that contains interior paintwork added by Pastor Bohuslav Lacjak in 1890.

Similar paintwork, in a more elaborate style, was used in Catholic churches in the vicinity of Schulenburg. The churches, today called the "Painted Churches of Texas," have become a popular tourist pilgrimage.

By the Civil War, there were about 700 Czechs in Texas, many with Unionist and abolitionist sentiments.

However, some fought in the Confederate army, while others tried to remain neutral.

A second wave of Czech immigration in the 1870s and 1880s followed the war. These Czech settlers established themselves on the Coastal Prairie and the Blackland Prairie from Ellis County near Dallas in the north to Victoria County in the south. A third wave after 1900 moved eastward to Brazoria and Fort Bend counties near Houston.

Although there are Czechs throughout Texas and isolated Czech communities in South and West Texas today, the concentration of Czech settlements in a cluster of 15 counties gives a high profile to the culture and its traditions.

Recent census figures show other ancestry groups have larger numbers.

However, as a rule, they moved directly into urban areas and quickly assimilated into the city life while Czechs maintain these identifiable places or cultural majority.

In the 1990 census, Texans who listed some Czech ancestry numbered 282,562. Other sources, including a statewide group called the Texans of Czech Ancestry, say the numbers are closer to one million.

However, the impact on Texas culture is difficult to convey through numbers. Not until 1920, after the formation of Czechoslovakia, did the U.S. census or immigration services use a "Czech" determination. Often, "Austrian" might be listed on U.S. documents. One clue to the impact of Czechs on Texas might be seen in the census' 1920 figures for "Country of Birth of Foreign-Born Population."

The three largest groups in Texas were: from Mexico, 69.2 percent; from Germany, 8.6 percent; from Czechoslovakia, 3.6 percent. Or in another tabulation, Czech "foreign white stock" (defined as those who spoke Czech at home) in 1940 was 62,680.

The two provinces of the Czech Republic are Bohemia, centered by the city of Prague, and Moravia, which lies to the east. The majority of Czech immigrants to Texas are Moravian, and the dialects spoken in Texas vary slightly from the Bohemian dialects spoken by most Czech-Americans.

Often 19th-century American accounts confuse the issue by calling certain Czech towns in Texas "Bohemian" when in fact the people were Moravian.

That the Czech language is still spoken in Texas is possibly a reaction to the prohibition by Austrian authorities on using the language. Early on, the new Czech-Texans established schools and newspapers to teach and maintain their language. Czech was being taught in the classroom of Cat Spring in 1855. The state's largest public college, the University of Texas at Austin, teaches Czech in the modern languages department.

Today, radio broadcasts in Czech can be heard in Central Texas. Also heard is music that distinguishes the culture.

The polkas and waltzes, and the musical instruments used, such as the accordion, so impacted the culture of Texas that the sounds crossed over into the Mexican culture, becoming part of the norteno sound and blending into conjunto bands. It is a legacy that reaches into Tejano music today. These Spanish terms refer to music with elements of this style.

Numerous well-known Czech bands still play the dance halls and church bazaars throughout the State, and Ennis, one of the northernmost Czech towns, plays host to the National Polka Festival each May. It is said that "wherever you have two Czechs you'll find three clubs."

Thus, local lingo in Czech towns is a

kind of "alphabet soup" of these groups. There will probably be a SPJST hall, a lodge known by the Czech initials for Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas. It is a non-denominational fraternal group formed in 1897, initially to provide life insurance.

The KJT and KJZT are two other statewide organizations. The KJT, formed in 1888, stands for Katolika Jednota Texaska, a Catholic men's group. The KJZT for woman was formed in 1897, and the group today is known as the Catholic Family Fraternal of Texas—KJZT. Another organization, the Sokol, is dedicated to the physical, mental, moral, and cultural advancement of members through the use of gymnasiums. The idea began in Prague in 1862 and the first such group in Texas was formed in Ennis in 1909. Others soon followed in Rowena, Guy, Crosby, and Shiner and many other Czech communities. They survive in metropolitan areas and the north central town of West, as well as in Ennis.

The food of the Czechs is literally the dessert of this ethnic group's story.

Kolaches, a pastry with a filling, most often of fruit, is well-known, and likely to be offered at any suburban doughnut shop in modern Texas. But, if absolute authenticity is required, the many Czech festivals and church bazaars throughout the state offer samplings.

Brother Goodnight was born in Holland to Owen Letcher Goodnight and Mary Lillian Duck Goodnight. He was a nursing home administrator. He served in the U.S. Army in Korea, and was a Methodist.

Mrs. Holub was born March 22, 1911, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

She married Julius Holub on March 29, 1932, in Bomarton, Texas. He preceded her in death in October, 1987, after 55 years of marriage. She resided in Baylor County, Texas and Seymour, Texas most of her life, living on their farm southwest of Seymour for 40 years then moving to their home in 1967.

She was a homemaker, member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Sacred Heart Altar Society, SPJST Lodge 73, Seymour, and various other organizations in the Seymour community.

She is survived by sister in-law, Bonette Kovar of Seymour, Texas; numerous nieces, nephews, and close friends.

She is also preceded in death by her father, Frank R. Kovar; her mother, Teresie E. "Gres" Kovar; sisters, Teresa Maral- Angeline Psencik, twin

sister, Claudia Holub, and Pauline Holub; and brothers, Albin Kovar, Raymond Kovar, and Frank Kovar.

Mr. Haisler was born October 29, 1911, in Caldwell, Texas. He married Mary Marek on January 9, 1935, in Seymour, Texas, and together they celebrated 56 years of marriage.

She preceded him in death in

August 1991. He was also preceded in death by a son, Jerry in 1977.

He farmed all of his life, and enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping.

He belonged to the SPJST from which he received a Lifetime Achiever award. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church.

Olga was born July 22, 1920, in East Bernard. Her hobbies included cooking, baking, crocheting, gardening, and golfing. While living in Houston, she worked at Palais Royal Department Store. After her husband retired, they moved to Kenney, and she worked at Brookshire Brothers in Brenham as manager of the bakery.

She is preceded in death by husband, V.B. (Andy) Anderson; parents, Tom and Marie Novosad; sisters, Stazie Hon and Helen Zezula; brothers, George, Charlie and Clem Novosad.

She is survived by son, Don Anderson and wife, Debbie of Kenney; daughter, Jackie Brown and husband, Wayne of Provo, Utah; sister, Lillie Hanna of Taylor; brother, Gus Novosad and wife, Melba of Jourdanton; sister in-law, Frances Novosad; eight grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; six great-great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation was held Monday, October 4, from 2 to 8 p.m., at the Hurley Funeral Home in Pleasanton. Services were Tuesday, October 5, at 2 p.m., at the Hurley Funeral Home with interment following at the Jourdanton City Cemetery in Jourdanton.

Lodge 6 Cottonwood youth glad for guardian angels Dear Wstnik Readers, Wow! We have had a bad month.

First, my mom totaled her car on a Sunday. Two days later, I totaled mine.

Thanks to our guardian angels, none of us were hurt very badly.

I have been very busy with school and cheerleading. We have our first cheer competition on October 24. I will have to miss the district meeting. This will be the first one I have missed in a long time. Happy Halloween!

6 Cottonwood youth member performs at State Fair Lodge

Dear Readers, We started the month out by having our youth club meeting at the Wild West Steakhouse in West on Sunday, October 3, 2004. I had to eat fast because I had to go to Dallas to the State Fair to perform gymnastics.

We took cakes to the nursing home, and we are still making our Christmas crafts on social nights. We will be having a costume party for Halloween.

The October 6, 2004, meeting of the SPJST Lodge 9, Snook Youth Club was called to order at 6:30 p.m. by CJ Wheeler. The Pledge of Allegiance and the youth club motto were led by Landon Eldridge, Morgan Sebesta, and Carlee See. There were 45 members present, and 15 adults, and one visitor, Josh Twaddle.

Bradley gave the treasurer's report, and Nathan Sebesta read the secretary's report and club correspondence.

Old business mentioned was the MDA Telethon outing, Grandparent's Day Program and practice, Kolache Festival, Burleson County Parade, Make A Difference Day project, St. Jude Donation, and Operation Christmas Child Project.

Under new business, we discussed details for District One Fall Fun Day and ornament contest, Make A Difference Day project, beseda circle, and MSC Opas Jr. outing.

Lodge 9, Snook Youth Club plans Make A Difference project Dear Readers, Our Lodge 9, Snook Youth Club met on October 6, 2004. We had 45 members present.

At the meeting, we discussed our Make A Difference Day project. For the Make A Difference project, our club selected park and trail improvements at Birch Creek Park at Lake Somerville.

There will be a meal served afterwards for those who participate. We are also collecting toys for M.A.S.H. for the annual Toy Drive in December. Our club also discussed going to MSC Opas Jr. Production of Tom Sawyer on November 21. Details and arrangement will be made at the next meeting.

Happy birthday to youth dub members who have birthdays in the month of October and especially to my morn (Ms. Marie) and Ms. Sharon.

SPJST Youth Clubs' 2004 First Quarterly Report

Lodge 24, Cyclone Youth Club participates in Czech Heritage Day Dear Wstnik Readers, Our October meeting was held with Czech Heritage Day at Flag Hall on October 2. Our reporter transferred to another lodge, so the youth club elected me to be reporter again. We are doing a food drive for charity. Bring your food items to the November meeting!

After the meeting, we played pingpang, nerf hoops, and helped the adults with the Czech Day. Miss Texas Jamie Story came and visited our youth club meeting, and she is very nice. She gave us signed photographs, performed songs on the piano, and danced with everyone at the dance!

We sold kolaches and SPJST cookbooks all evening.

Our adult lodge is having a Halloween Dance on October 30 and you can come dressed in your Halloween costume!

Our next meeting is November 6, before the District Two Lock-In. Look for your reminder letter in the mail soon!

Our meeting was called to order at 1:15 p.m. by our President Ashley Sczech. Cory Cerny led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Present were three members and two adults.

Our youth leader reminded us that the Christmas Ornament Contest will be held at the District Six Fall Meeting in Hungerford on October 24. We were also asked to bring canned goods to the November meeting and any member of the adult lodge was asked to bring them as well to be donated to the food basket. The meeting was adjourned at 1:55 p.m.

After the meeting, we enjoyed making Halloween crafts.

The next meeting will be in Hillje on November 14, at 1:15 p.m.

TCHCC hosts musical tribute October 29, 30 There are just under 1,000,000 Texans of Czech ancestry in our Grand State of Texas and the Czech language is the third most spoken, behind English and Spanish.

Since then, October 28 is celebrated in the same manner as the United States' Fourth of July. In 1999, the Texas legislature proclaimed October "Czech Heritage Month" and has continued to do so each year. Even though the Czechs and Slovaks dissolved their 74-year-old union on January 1, 1993, making them separate Republics, they celebrate Independence Day together.

This year, the Bexar County Chapter of the Czech Heritage Society will hold its annual celebration on Sunday, October 31 from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at the Knights of Columbus Hall, located at 5721 Rigsby in San Antonio, Texas (0.6 miles outside 410).

Visit www.czechs.org for more information. A Czech meal will be served from 11 to 3 p.m. The cost of the meal is $6 for adults and $3 for under 10 years of age. Drinks, homemade chicken noodle soup, Czech kolac and a variety of delicious pastries will be on sale throughout the day.

He is a talented young man who has appeared at numerous heritage, social, and community events throughout Texas, and will perform from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m.

CHS offers scholarship The Czech Heritage Society of Texas is accepting applications for the Victor Peter Memorial Scholarship.

The five hundred dollar ($500) stipend was established in memory of the late Victor Alfons Peter, who died in 1996.

Peter was a retired businessman and a trustee of the Czech Heritage society.

Following the Velvet Revolution in Czechoslovakia in 1989, he was instrumental in re-establishing relationships between the Czechs of Texas and the Old Country.

The Victor Peter Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a grad-

uating high school senior to help further his or her education. As part of their application students will write a 300-word essay about a prominent personality in Czech or Texas-Czech history. In addition, a high school transcript, two letters of recommendation, 200-word autobiography, a 100 word statement explaining what he or she plans to study in college or at the university, list of 10 ways in which he or she has had contact with Czech culture, and a cover sheet including the students name, address, phone number, and high school's name, address and phone number. Students do not have to be associated with the Czech Heritage Society, or be of Czech origin to apply.
