The year 2005 is just around the corner, and what an exciting year it will be for the Vestnik! January 5, 2005, will be the first Vestnik issue in color! The delegates at the June Convention approved for the Vestnik to be published weekly in color. This is very exciting. The black and white print is fine, but can you imagine how awesome our paper's going to look in color? I know this will be a wonderful change that I am really looking forward to. Wow—I can't wait!

Creativity Works My husband David and I attended the Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Club September meeting and swimming social recently. The youth members had a youth club meeting; they swam; they ate; and they visited. It was great.

Youth Leader Heidi Bartek has about 40 active youth members in the youth club. It looked like they all attended— plus, they brought several friends (potential youth club members!).

Heidi is always capturing the kids' imaginations—and that's exactly what it takes to have a successful youth club. At this September meeting/social, the youth club officers conducted the meeting from the pool side while the youth stayed cool in the water. Believe it or not, the youth members participated in the meeting—from the swimming pool. My compliments to Heidi for keeping it creative!

Scholarship Time Graduating high school seniors and college undergraduates who have been members of the SPJST for a year or more are invited to submit their requests for scholarship application forms for the 2005 academic year.

Established in 1982, the SPJST Scholarship Program is funded by an allocation of the SPJST Supreme Lodge and through contributions by SPJST members. Accordingly, the more funds available, the more scholarships awarded. In 2004, the SPJST awarded a total of 67 scholarships for $67,500 through its scholarship program. Lodges, districts encouraged to post important 2005 dates on SPJST calendar The Vestnik office is looking for your lodge's and your district's important dates for the 2005 SPJST calendar. There's no cost, and this can be a great reminder for lodge members.

What qualifies as an "important date?" Think in terms of your big annual events such as picnics, member appreciation dinners, and heritage day observances. On the district level, think in terms of district meetings and districtwide activities.

Please get together with your I( )(ig members at your next lodge 1 iiectilig and determine which dates you want to include on next year's SPJST calendar. SPJST records 2,848 applications written through August in Join Hands 2004 program Through the end of August, the SPJST had received 2,848 applications for insurance and annuity certificates. The membership application goal of 2,345 in the Join Hands 2004 membership drive was reached in July. However, the membership campaign continues through the end of the year.

In conjunction with SPJST's Join Hands 2004 program, local lodges have been assigned application quotas for the year. The lodge quota has been based

largely on past performance and perceived potential.

The fourth column, "Youth Club Quota." applies to those lodges with youth clubs and reflects applications written for members between the ages of 0 and 17.

"Youth Club" totals are applied toward the lodge's total quota. The sixth column, "Lodge Incentive Count," reflects the number of new certificates issued for the Lodge Recognition and Incentive Program.

Ornament Contest Guidelines We will also have adult and youth Christmas Ornament Contests. The guidelines are: 1. Each member may enter only one ornament.

2. Must be present at District meeting to win.

3. Ornament must be member's own creation. All ornaments must be homemade. No store bought finished ornaments or pre-assembled kits.

Dress like pirates!

I don't know if all of you know, but our children had to dress as pirates during camp. Anyway, we would like to have our adults come to this fun meeting also dressed as pirates. Now, I know that we have some very talented people in our SPJST. and you can surely come up with some sort of pirate costume. We will be giving a trophy to the one who can come as the best dressed pirate.

Dear Members, Make plans to attend the SPJST District Two Fall Meeting on Sunday, September 19, 2004, at Lodge 18 in Elgin. Registration begins at 1 p.m. plus contest registration. The meeting will be called to order by District President Kathy Fritz with the Pledge of Allegiance at 2 p.m. This will be a fun meeting dressing like pirates. Use your imagination and dress up in your favorite costume as a pirate. We will have a lot of fun things to do for all our members—new and old. Our district has more members attending the dis' trict meetings than any other.

Christmas Ornament Contest Also, don't forget to make those Christmas ornaments. As I have said before, this does include the men! So put your thinking cap on and make us an ornament. You already know the rules.

24, Cyclone welcomes Miss Texas, Vrazels to Czech Heritage Day Lodge

Come one, come all to the Sixth Annual Czech Heritage Day celebration at Flag Hall on Saturday, October 2, 2004, hosted by SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone. Flag Hall is located 12 miles east of Temple, past Zabcikville. The annual celebration is a spirited tribute to Czech heritage and culture in Texas. Establishing a sense of community was very in-iporto early Czechs in Texas. It's that way and it's the whole idea of

Czech Heritage Day—bringing people together.

Doors open at 5 p.m. for the event and food and kolaches will be available. Admission is $5 per person. Please note that there will not be a Czech polka mass this year. Special guest of honor and performer at this year's celebration will be Miss Texas Jamie Story of Arlington, Texas.

Jamie will be vying for the title of Miss America on September 18 in Atlantic City, New Jersey. As Miss Texas, she will travel to every area of the state this year and make more than 400 appearances. Jamie is an accomplished pianist and will be performing for your listening enjoyment at 6:30 p.m.

By popular demand, Vrazels Polka Band is back again this year and will be performing from 7 to 11 p.m. The band served as grand marshalls of this year's Westfest parade and have been recognized on numerous occasions for their musical talents. In 2001, band members Alfred and Anton Vrazel were presented with the World of Music Hall of Fame Award in Las Vegas, Nevada. The presentation coincided with the Grand Polka Festival where they also performed.

Lodge 29, Taylor hosts fourth annual barbecue cook-off September 24, 25 Lodge 29, Taylor will host the Fourth Annual Barbecue Cook-off on Friday and Saturday, September 24 and 25, 2004. The event I is CTBA sanctioned.

There will be $2,500 guaranteed prize money—first through tenth places, and trophies/plaques will be awarded for first through tenth places as well In addition, unique trophies will be given for master cook; reserve master cook; reserve second master cook; and best rig. The entry fee is $80 for three meat categories. You do not need a partner as all players will draw numbers and be seated accordingly for the first round. The two winners will move to the next table and split up and play with the non-winners who remain at that table.

There will be no head table, thus all winners will move. We will use the same rules that the SPJST uses.

The tournament should end around 4:30 p.m.

Lodge 63 Sweet Home plans September 19 meeting/social Lodge 63, Sweet Home will hold its meeting and social on September 19, 2004, at the Green Dickson Park in Shiner beginning at 12 noon.

Happy hour will be followed by a meal of hamburgers/hot dogs with trimmings. Everything will be furnished by the lodge including ice cream for dessert. A birthday cake, baked by Lolly Mican, will be won by someone with a birthday in July, August, or September.

A short business meeting will be conducted after lunch. Committees will make their reports and any business brought by the members will be discussed. Door prizes will be given.

Youth Fishing Tournament

We will also have a youth fishing tournament for children age 12 and under. This will be open to members and non-members so bring the grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Prizes will be awarded for the largest fish and most fish caught. There is also a playground for the kids nearby so there will be plenty for the youth to do.

Come out to Green Dickson Park (Zabransky's garage in Sweet Home if it rains) on September 19 and enjoy the picnic. See you there.

About the SPJST Youth Program On an annual basis, SPJST Youth Clubs sponsor a wide range of social activities, community service projects, and charity projects. The SPJST youth club is about having fun, but it's also about contributing to the welfare of the people of Texas.

Thc SPJST Youth Program has three parts: educational, patriotic, and social. The educational part of the SPJST Youth Program is an ongoing part of local youth club activities. State and local progr,uni address a range of areas, including human relations, nature, parliamentary procedure, juvenile decency, arts and crafts, the fine arts, music, dramatics, and Czech ethnic tradition.

Youth club members range from ages six to high school senior.

The patriotic program consists of ceremonial rituals and an annual essay contest. The objective is to teach the operation of a free democratic society and majority rule.

The social program includes socials, dances, picnics, pageants, hayride, and

family group activities geared to foster family unity. In addition, the SPJST makes summer camping trips available to its active youth members. Each of the seven SPJST districts across the state has its own camp throughout Texas. Some districts have combined camp sessions.

Once again, please make plans to come to the September 19 meeting for complete information on the SPJST Youth Club and learn how you can get involved!

The gift booth usually has some home canned goodies, jelly, plants, crafts, and many other nice items.

President Glen Pruski called the meeting to order. Youth member Taylor Korus led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Minutes of the June and July meetings were read and approved.

Correspondence was a letter from the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum (LAM) treasurer thanking us for all donations and the purchase of the sink.

A motion was made by Diane Korus that we participate in the Peanut Festival and have a booth. This was seconded by Oscar Korus. We will advertise for pre-sale orders two weeks before the Peanut Festival.

Financial Secretary Liz Bielefeld's report stated that there were three new members and seven cancellations for July.

A new annuity will be coming out -S -rNe ,--year-InnuitT L with-a minimum of $5,000. There is a fiveneeds to meet its quota.

Treasurer reports for June, July, and August were read and approved.

Youth Leader Wendy Pruski reported that eight youth and two adults were at the August meeting. Tayler Korus was to represent District Seven in the Pleasanton Cowboy Homecoming Parade on August 21.

At camp, 59 youth and 21 adults attended this year. We had 37 new campers and staff initiated. State Youth Achievement Day was on August 7 in Temple.

Under the Fraternal Activities Coordinator's (FAC) report, the following date was announced—the SPJST Golf Tournament will be October 9. The Gladys Yates Memorial Fund now has over $3,000.

They need to have over $10,000 before scholarships can be awarded.

Hall Manager Bertrand reported that the bees are being sprayed and there are two rentals for August.

There was no LAM report or old business.

Under new business, a motion was made by Wendy Pruski to purchase a

three-gallon water cooler for the meetings. This was seconded by Kevin Bayer, and the motion carried.

The Fall District Seven Meeting will be on November 21. A motion was made by Polly Bayer to hold our regular monthly meeting on November 14. This was seconded by Wendy Pruski, and the motion carried.

Peanut Festival Chairs Roxy Bertrand and Wendy Pruski will have plans to discuss for the Peanut Festival at the September meeting.

Tayler Korus asked if the lodge would like to support her as a duchess in the San Antonio Lutheran Coronation by purchasing an ad in their program. Motion was made by Bob Bayer to purchase an ad, seconded by Liz Bielefeld. The motion carried.

The September meeting will be on September 12 at 3 p.m. The youth will meet at 2 p.m.

The meeting adjourned at 8:15 p.m.

Our August 21 dance was a large success, despite the fact we had no hosts. Glenn Lenderman and friends Mike Shockley, Joel Arriola, and of course, our own George Scogin and Crickett Page provided us with great dance music and fun.

Thanks to all of you who have donated to our lawn maintenance fund.

The young man we have hired is doing a wonderful job and saves us all from having to get out in the heat and take care of the lawn.

n Memoriam Expression of Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge 88, Houston, Texas, and on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincere and heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed member, JOYCE HANSON BAETHE, loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, who passed away, Friday, July 9, 2004, at the age of 74. She was a member of SPJST Lodge 88, Houston for over 50 years, and the Sons of Herman Edelweiss Lodge 4 for over 30 years.

Joyce is survived by her husband of 53 years, JD Baethe; son, Jay Scott Baethe and wife, Beth; daughter, Judy Baethe Schuhmann and husband, Glenn; grandchildren, Melissa Ann Baethe, and JD Schuhmann; greatgrandson, Jack Randall Chiles; lodge sisters and brothers; and friends and neighbors of many years.

The family received friends from 5 to 8 p.m. on Monday, July 12 at Waltrip Funeral Home. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, July 13 also at the funeral home.

Interment followed at Brookside Cemetery at Lander Road.

Resolution Committee Mary Roznovsky Gladys Havemann Estelle Hillman —SPJST-

In Memory of Frank Hornik Mr. Frank Hornik, age 88, died Sunday, September 5, 2004, at the Charlton Methodist Hospital in Dallas.

He was born September 20, 1915, in Ennis, the son of Joseph and Annie Cech Hornik. He was reared in the Garrett and Boyce communities where he attended school. After finishing school, he farmed and ranched. In 1941, he entered the U.S. Army as an MP. He served in the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign earning three bronze stars, a Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one bronze star, and the Good Conduct Medal. He was discharged in 1945 and moved to Bryan, Texas where he was employed by International Furniture Co. for 10 years. He returned to Ennis and worked as a painter and carpenter, retiring in 1985.

He was a member of St. John Catholic Church, SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis, and a life member of the VFW Post 7106.

He is survived by brother, Joe Hornik of Ennis; nephews, David Hornik, George Hornik, and Richard Hornik, all of Ennis and Robert Hornik of Blooming Grove; and niece, Rosemary Cameron of Ennis.

Rosary was recited at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, September 7, in the Keever Chapel. Mass of the Christian burial was celebrated at 10 a.m., Wednesday, September 8, in St. John Catholic Church. Interment was in St. Joseph's Cemetery under the direction of J.E. Keever Mortuary.

MARESH, who passed away Sunday, August 1, 2004, at the home of her daughter. She was 93.

Visitation was held from 6 to 8 p.m. on on Tuesday, August 3, at Strickland Funeral Home in Caldwell. A Rosary was recited at 7 p.m., Tuesday, August 3, at the funeral home by Deacon Glen Wearden.

Funeral services were at 2 p.m.

Wednesday, August 4, at Strickland Funeral Home in Caldwell. The Reverend Dimitrij Colankin officiated.

Burial was in the New Tabor Cemetery.

She was born in the Old Dime Box community and lived in Caldwell most of her life. She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe W. Maresh.

Survivors include daughters and sons in-law, Gladys Penicka of Bryan, Rosie Lee and Arthur Kluge of Caldwell, and Mary Ann and Tony Morille of Houston; son and daughter in-law, Joe Willie and Linda Maresh of Caldwell; 16 grandchildren, 22 greatgrandchildren; great-great-grandchild; and numerous other relatives.

May our departed sister rest in peace.

Reunions Kulhanek family The 32nd Antonin and Celestine Kulhanek family reunion will be held at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Frelsburg, Texas on Sunday, September 26. The second Repa Reunion of the family and descendants of Jan and Anna (Kurecka) Repa will be held on Saturday, October 9, at the Fellowship Building of the Wall Brethren Church in Wall Texas.

The reunion is scheduled from 10 a.m to 4 p.m.

What is TFC? The TFC Youth Section is made up leaders representing the various fraternal organizations in Texas. Each year, they sponsor these contests in conjunction with their annual meeting and as a way to showcase our talented youth club members. That's where you come in!

Dear Members, The District Two Fall Meeting will be held in Elgin on Sunday, September 19. Registration is from 1 to 2 p.m.

Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Club held its September meeting in the swimming pool at Summit Recreation Center in Temple.

Lodge 25, Ennis Youth Club honors grandparents Dear Readers, The theme for our September meeting and social was "Grandparents" in honor of Grandparent's Day. Special guest speaker Annie Martinek (who is 97) taught us some Czech words: rodice, matka, otec, sestra, bratre, babicka, dedecek. Do you know what those words mean? She told us how she only knew Czech language until she was six years old, and then she learned how to speak English in primary school.

After our Czech lesson, we played a game called the "Grandparent Shuffle." We had two teams. We dressed in a gray wig, a cap, glasses, housecoat and popuchas (another Czech word). We carried a cane racing

to the "pharmacy" to get our medicine.

(Don't worry it wasn't real medicine. It was only candy that we had to count 10 out of a bowl and put it in a cup.)

Then, we raced back and sat on a whoopie cushion before it was the next person's turn. It was a lot of fun.

We won first place in senior group talent "Suds in the Bucket," and we got a big trophy. I helped my dad build the frame of the white pickup truck that I drove onstage. It was fun!

A Visit to the Praha Cemetery

by Tayler Susan • Lodge 48, Beyersville If you walk through the old cemeteries of Praha, Moravia, Shulenburg, Hallettsville and Fredricksburg, you will find that each grave has its own personality.

Praha is little more than a wide spot in the road. There are lots of live oak trees along the small, barely a two lane road. A church that has been well taken care of dominates the landscape, even though it is small by today's standards. Some of the cemeteries seem extremely large for the small communities they were in. Gray granite stones towered over dark wrought iron crosses and grinding gravel under foot seemed grim. Some markers had metal boxes with glass fronts.

They are very impressive. Some of the wreath boxes were damaged.

Collectors had broken open the boxes and taken the whole wreath.

Some markers are small with a reclined lamb or a small kneeling angel on them. These were the graves of infants and children all placed together in a row. There were so many markers for children who died about the same time.

How grim that must have been for many families and the whole community. All those children became ill and died about the same time.

An influenza swept through the community in early 1900s taking many with it. There was lots of color from the blue-bonnets, old

roses, blue purple flags, and clumps of asparagus fern which were all in bloom.

The plants and flowers softened the harshness and brought life to this place of the dead. You might find American-made sedans in the Parking lot. You might see ladies tending the graves, because of the weeds growing around the graves.

You may learn that this cemetery is laid out very much like many of the cemeteries established by the Czechs or Germans. there an article in which it was stated that about all that remains of the Texas Czech culture is the cemeteries in empty rural communities which once flourished. I know that is not true. There are still many who know tales of our ancestors. We must return to the small towns of our past, tend the graves, and learn the traditions and stories before the last generation of lore keepers die.

I have got to tell you about my Grandma and Grandpa Laitkep. I am so lucky to have such wonderful grandparents. They mean the world to me.

My grandma showed me how to make homemade bread, cookies, cakes, gingerbread, and now, I want to learn how to make homemade noodles.

Also, grandma is showing me how to milk a cow. My grandma milks a cow, and the cow's name is Ruth. She is a small cow. Her breed is Dexter from Germany. My grandma lets me help her in her big garden. Sometimes, I make a mess. When I help grandma make bread, grandma tells me I have more flour on me than in the bread, but

I am learning, and it is so much fun.

Grandpa is teaching me to play an accordion—I know a little bit.

Grandpa taught himself when he was eight years old. I want to do the same.

I also sing Czech and English with my grandpa's band. Grandma taught me the Czech song, and I always sing it.

The patriotic program consists of ceremonial rituals and an annual essay contest. The objective is to teach the operation of a free democratic society and majority rule. The social program includes socials, dances, picnics, pageants, hayride, and family group activities geared to foster family unity. In addition, the SPJST makes summer camping trips available to its active youth members. Each of the seven SPJST districts across the state has its own camp throughout Texas. Some districts have combined camp sessions.

Lodge 107 Floresville Youth Club reports on August meeting Dear Members, We held our monthly meeting on August 8, 2004, at 6:50 p.m. President Lian Pruski called the meeting to order. Tayler Korus led Pledge of Allegiance and the motto.

The roll was called with eight members and two adults present.

The minutes of the July 6, 2004, meeting were read and approved.

There was no correspondence.

The treasurer's report was read and approved.

Under old business, camp and State YAD were discussed. Each one present told what they liked about camp.

Each one present also told what they did at State YAD. Under new business, the Floresville Peanut Festival will be on October 9 (the second weekend). On the first weekend, we will make and pack brittle. On the second weekend, we will sell brittle. The District Seven Fall Meeting will be in Floresville on November 21. Everyone was told to have their ornaments ready.

Our next meeting will be on September 12, 2004, at 2 p.m.

This year, the Texas Fraternal Congress Youth Section is sponsoring an Art Contest.

All youth ages 6 to 18 who are members of a Texas Fraternal.

Theme "Red, White and Blue" Awards $50.00 prize Runner-Up Prizes—First, second, and third place prizes will be awarded in the following age groups: Ages 6 to 8, Ages 9 to 11, Ages 12 to 14, and Ages 15 to 18.

Participation Awards—All participants will receive a participation certificate.

All artwork will be displayed at the Texas Fraternal Congress on October 16 at the Bahia Mar Resort and Conference Center in South Padre Island, Texas.

Judging Artwork will be judged by a panel of art specialists. Judging is based on the artwork's creativity design, neatness, and appearance.

The Rules Artwork should reflect a "Red, White and Blue" theme. A drawing or painting on paper, canvas or poster board that is no larger than a standard sheet of paper (8 1/2 inches by 11 inches). A freehand design; no tracing allowed. No rulers or stencil letters are allowed. Include the following information on the back of the artwork participant's name, address, phone number, e-mail address, and society's name, number and city/town.

Essay Contest What is it?

The Texas Fraternal Congress (TFC) Youth Section is sponsoring a Patriotic Essay Contest to promote patriotism and creative literacy.

Who can enter?

All youth ages 6 to 18 who are members of a Texas Fraternal Benefit Society.

Topic – "Patriotism is .

Awards $50.00 prize and winning essay read at the Texas Fraternal Congress on October 16 in South Padre Island, Texas Runner-Up Prizes—First, second, and third place prizes will be awarded in the following age groups: Ages 6 to 8, Ages 9 to 11, Ages 12 to 14, and Ages 15 to 18.

Participation Awards—All participants will receive a participation certificate.

Judging Essays will be judged by a panel of writing specialists. Judging is based on the essay's creativity, grammar, and neatness.

The Victor Peter Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a graduating high school senior to help further his or her education. As part of their application, students will write a 300-word essay about a prominent personality in Czech or Texas-Czech history. In addition, a high school transcript, two letters of recommendation, 200-word autobiography, a 100-word statement explaining what he or she plans to study in college or at the university, list of 10 ways in which he or she has had contact with Czech culture, and a cover sheet including the student's name, address, phone number, and high school's name, address, and phone number. Students do not have to be associated with the Czech Heritage Society or be of Czech origin to apply.

Speakers from a number of libraries will bring presentations on material that their individual library hold; and in particular, the resources to help with Czech genealogy.

Libraries and their representatives will include Nan Ross from the Carnegie Center in Bryan, Von Maszewski from the George Memorial Library in Richmond/Rosenberg, Barbara Hawkins Franz from Montgomery County Library in Conroe, Brenda Fissler from Friench Simpson Memorial Library in Hallettsville, and Will Howard from the Houston Public Library "Texas Room".

Bringing two special presentations, "Researching in Gulf Coast Libraries" and "Researching Manuscripts, Archives, and Special Collections", will be Lynna Kay Shuffield.

An LDS presentation by Tom Hrncirik will focus on specifics dealing with Czech genealogy.

Dr. Pansky holds Agricultural Engineering and Animal Science Degrees from Southern Bohemia University in Ceske Budejovice, Czech Republic, and has lived in the United States for more than 10 years. He received his Masters Degree and Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from Mississippi State University.

Valley Czech Organizations Sponsor Czech Language Course

The Brazos Valley Czech Heritage Society (BVCHS) together with the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas (CEFT) are pleased to sponsor 15 weeks of Czech Language Classes, which began Tuesday evening, September 7, 2004. These classes will concentrate on conversational Czech for both beginners and more advanced Czech speakers, and will be open to anyone who is interested.

This 15-week course will consist of 15 weekly one and one-half (1 1/2) hour class sessions meeting every Tuesday evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m., with a one-half (1/2) hour personalized advanced help session from 6:00 to 6:30 p.m., and a one-half (1/2) hour personalized beginners help session from 6:30 to 7 p.m, for a total of two and one-half (2 1/2) hours of Czech language instruction every Tuesday evening from 6 to 8:30 p.m. These 15 weekly classes started on Tuesday evening, September 7, and will end on Tuesday evening, December 14. Late registration will be accepted through Tuesday evening, September 21.

These Classes will be held in the Saint Joseph's Parish Activity Center, located, 700 East 26th Street, Bryan, Texas.

Tuition is $35 per person for the entire 15-week course. Instructional materials will be provided and no textbook is required. Ample parking is available, and parking is free.
