It's Scholarship Application Time! Graduating high school seniors and college undergraduates who have been members of the SPJST for a year or more are invited to submit their requests for scholarship application forms for the 2005 academic year. Established in 1982, the SPJST Scholarship Program is funded by an allocation of the SPJST Supreme Lodge and through contributions by SPJST members. Accordingly, the more funds available, the more scholarships awarded. In 2004, the SPJST awarded a total of 67 scholarships for $67,500 through its scholarship program. To obtain an SPJST General Scholarship application and complete guidelines, please contact the SPJST Home Office at (800) 727-7578 or (254) 773-1575 and ask for the Scholarship Department.
Lodge 135, Ennis Member Charlie Jurcik Achieves Grand Age of 96 The SPJST congratulates Brother Charlie A. Jurcik, a member of Lodge 135, Ennis, who celebrated his 96th birthday on August 28, 2004. Brother Jurcik is now entitled to all SPJST member benefits with no further dues or assessments required. Born on August 28, 1908, Charlie was the son of Czech-born parents Alois and Anna Jurcik. who came to the United States in 1906. His brothers and sisters included Miro, Louis, Julius, Emil, Sadie, Blanche, Dagmar, Bertha, and Vlasta — all deceased. Siblings living are brother, Victor, and sisters, Annie, Libbie, and Vlasta. Brother Jurcik married Annastazie Ellevan in Waco, Texas, on November 3, 1931. She preceded him in death on October 30, 1986. Their children are Bernice Hamilton, Charles Jurcik, and Jeannette Zajic.
Charlie farmed in West, Texas and in Ennis, Texas. He also did carpentry work in Ennis. He was president of Ennis Sokol and was active in gymnastics for four years as director. He has been a member of Sokol for over 50 years and SPJST for over 50 years. Charlie remembers the difficult times during the Depression. He had to borrow $10 from the bank to live on for a month. Part of the $10 went to feed the farm mules, usually five dollars for groceries, and five dollars for hay. Charlie enjoyed building houses from the ground up and having them perfect. He was always proud of his carpentry. Charlie enjoys playing "42" dominoes. He used to play old Czech card games like Maria and Commando. He still plays "42" weekly. He has continued to live alone through the years doing his own house-cleaning and cooking. He has mowed his lawn until this year. Charlie resides in Ennis.
